DELRAY BEACH, FL:  Boca Stage’s first production in their new home at the Delray Beach Playhouse will be Frederick Knott’s classic thriller, Wait Until Dark.  The production will run in the Playhouse’s Cabaret Theatre from October 27th through November 5th.

“Boca Stage has held off for years on producing a version of Frederick Knott’s Wait Until Dark because we felt his original script, with its roots in the drug-infested New York City of the 1960s and its myriad dated elements would no longer resonate with modern audiences,” says Keith Garrsson, Boca Stage’s Founder, Executive Producer, and the production’s Director.

“However, in 2013, playwright and author Jeffrey Hatcher (Tuesdays with Morrie), updated the 1964 script by resetting the show in 1944, just at the end of World War II while keeping its New York City locale,” he continues. “This newly updated script is now tighter, faster, and no longer dated.”

The plot:  In 1944 Greenwich Village, Susan Hendrix, a blind yet capable woman, is imperiled by a trio of men in her own apartment. As the climax builds, Susan discovers that her blindness just might be the key to her escape, but she and her tormentors must wait until dark to play out this classic thriller’s chilling conclusion.

“The MacGuffin in this play is the cache of diamonds that has been, through some very strange circumstances placed somewhere in Susan’s Greenwich Village basement apartment and the quest of some very bad guys to retrieve it,” Garsson explains. “Blood will be spilled, people will die…  Wait Until Dark represents our first time (stab?!) at a pure thriller, a cat-and-mouse chase complete with double-crosses, triple-crosses, and some very challenging staging.

“Fortunately,” Garsson says, “A top-notch cast and crew will make this endeavor a great ride through a theater classic.”

Garsson has cast Rachel Whittington as Susan, Shane Tanner as Roat, Rio Chavarro as Mike, Troy Stanley as Carlino, Michael Coppola as Sam, and Ellie Rose as Gloria.

The Stage Manager for Wait Until Dark is James Danford. Cindi Blank Taylor is the show’s Scenic Designer, and Andre Lancaster will create the Sound and Light Design, and serve as the show’s Technical Director. Backstage Managers are Anne Solomons and Eric Fields.

Tickets for Wait Until Dark range in price from $39 to $69 and are available online at delraybeachplayhouse.com or by calling 561-272-1281. Performances are on Friday and Saturday at 2 pm and 8 pm, and on Sunday at 2 pm. There will also be a performance on Thursday, October 26th at 8 pm. All performances will take place at the Delray Beach Playhouse, 950 NW 9th Street, Delray Beach (33444)

“…original and remarkably good theatre—quiet in style but tingling with excitement underneath.” —NY Times.

October 22, 2015

MARGATE, FL: Frederick Knott’s Dial M for Murder is a psychological thriller – a character driven, carefully plotted, ‘cat-and mouse’ piece of theatre that is as contemporary now as it was when it first premiered on BBC television in 1952. Stage Door Theatre’s production of Dial M for Murder will open on October 30th, and run through December 6th.

Best known as a classic Alfred Hitchcock film, this ‘noir’ thriller was performed in London’s West End and on Broadway several years before Hitchcock adapted it for the screen.   The play centers around former tennis star Tony Wendice and his scheme to have his wealthy wife murdered, after learning she has designated him her heir. Although Wendice’s plans are evident almost from the outset, Knott’s clever plotting and characterizations will keep audiences on the edge of their seats throughout the play.

Dial M for Murder is being directed by Arthur Whitelaw, who, along with the rest of the cast is impressed by the quality of Knott’s script. “It’s so well written,” he says. “Our audiences are in for a treat.”

“I think Dial M For Murder, as a play, is so beautifully crafted,” says actor Jason Plourde, who has been cast as Tony Wendice in the production. “As a classically trained singer with an operatic background, I’m accustomed to the use of melody and lyricism as tools to impart the drama of a show. I think the text in this play is very lyrical and almost musical in its cadence. The use of language is so lush that it’s an absolute delight to say these words. And also, it’s just always so much fun to play the villain, especially when it is in the guise of someone as cool and confident as Tony.”

Larry Bramble agrees: “What a gift to be cast as Inspector Hubbard in this theatre classic,” he says. “The script is so well written and with this talented cast, the experience will be one to remember. It’s a real page-turner, as they would say if it were a book.”

Other cast members include Gladys Ramirez as Margot Wendice, Sean Dorazio as Lesgate, Roy Lynam as Max Halliday, and Jose-Luiz Lopez as Thompson.

Dial M for Murder will run from October 30 – December 6 at The Stage Door Theatre. The theatre is located at 8036 Sample Road, Margate, 33065.

Tickets for Dial M for Murder are $38 – $42; $16 student tickets are also available. Tickets may be purchased at the Broward Stage Door Theatre box office at 954-344-7765 or on line at www.stagedoortheatre.com. Group and Subscriber Discounts are available for all Stage Door productions

Curtain Call Playhouse, South Florida’s most active touring company, will present Dial M for Murder at various venues throughout the region through May and June.

Now in their 18th year, Curtain Call Playhouse’ unique touring situation has allowed them to reach a much wider and more diverse audience than a traditional ‘one space’ theatrical company. They currently partner with the City of Boca Raton, Pompano Beach, Miramar, Sunrise, and The Township Center for the Performing Arts in Coconut Creek.

Best known as a classic Alfred Hitchcock film, Frederick Knott’s psychological thriller, Dial M for Murder premiered on BBC television in 1952, and was performed in London’s West End and on Broadway several years before Hitchcock adapted it for the screen.   The play centers around former tennis star Tony Wendice and his scheme to have his wealthy wife murdered now that she has designated him her heir. Although Wendice’s plans are evident almost from the outset, Knott’s clever plotting and characterizations will keep audiences on the edge of their seats throughout the play.

Charlie Redler - Director

“I am so pleased to be directing this outstanding timeless thriller,” says director Charlie Redler. “It’s a story with twists, turns, and surprises. There is a love affair, bribery, and back stabbing…This play and its conclusion will not be new to many in the audience, especially Hitchcock lovers, but working with these excellent actors to create a fresh new look at peeling away the layers of this thriller is an exciting and interesting challenge.

The cast of Dial M for Murder consists of Bill Battaglia as Tony Wendice, Kris Coffelt as Margot Wendice, Peter Hawkins as Inspector Hubbard, John Hernandez as Captain Lesgate, and Anton Simon as Max Halliday.

Dial M for Murder will run at various venues throughout South Florida from May 8th through June 27th. Ticket prices and performance times vary at each venue. See below for details.
