BOCA RATON & DELRAY BEACH, FL: YILoveJewish.org will present readings of award-winning playwright Debbie Slevin’s critically acclaimed play Gate B23: Carry-On Baggage. The readings will take place at Sol Theatre in Boca Raton on January 24th at 7:30 pm and at Movies of Delray on January 25th at 1 pm.

This ‘dramedy’, directed by Avi Hoffman, is a witty and compelling exploration of human connection amid uproarious chaos. It follows a diverse cast of travelers, each wrestling with personal challenges, as they are stranded at Gate B23 at Palm Beach International Airport whilst enduring an increasingly prolonged flight delay.  The play promises to deliver a unique theatrical experience that blends humor, tension, and profound human insights.

The reading of Gate B23: Carry-On Baggage will feature some of South Florida’s most prominent actors, including Barbara Bradshaw, Brandon Campbell, Abbie Fricke, Sara Grant, Barbara Sloan, Seth Trucks, and Dave Corey who will take on the role of the progressively disturbed Gate Attendant.

Debbie Slevin, an award-winning essayist and author is a writer, producer/director, and teacher. She conceived and co-produced The Apron Strings Project in Riverhead, NY, produced and directed The Last Five Years at Guild Hall in East Hampton, and the first NYC revival of Songs for a New World. Her play Gate B23: Carry-On Baggage was a best-selling selection of NYC International Fringe Festival and Manhattan Repertory Theater’s Winterfest. Now a well-read blogger for Huffpo50, Debbie’s writing has also appeared in Essence Magazine, Woman’s World, and Reform Judaism. She was also a staff writer for the Jewish Standard.

Tickets are available at both venues the day of the performance on a first come/first served basis.  Tickets are free, but donations, accepted at the door of each venue, are suggested.

PLANTATION, FL/DELRAY BEACH, FL:   Dancing on Glass, award-winning playwright Gary Morgenstein’s ‘ripped from the headlines’ play that confronts antisemitism and political bullying at a private school in Brooklyn, will be given two staged readings on January 14th, 2026.  The first, at 1 pm will take place at the Soref Jewish Community Center in Plantation, and the second at 7 pm that same evening will be held at the Dr. André Fladell Civic Center in Delray Beach.

A Jewish teacher is fired by his progressive Jewish Board for not being “balanced enough” to continue teaching his course in Israeli/Palestinian issues. He decides to fight back. The play deals with contemporary classroom issues such as educational bias and bullying – issues which are being faced across our country and around the world today.  Although the play’s themes are dark, Morgenstein’s play is laced with humor and light self-reflection.

“In these unsettling times, theater should light a path through the terror, through faith in ourselves and each other, aided by the timeliness and approved treatment of laughter,” Morgenstein said recently.

A talk-back/question and answer session with the playwright will follow each performance.

Gary Morgenstein’s plays, including Dancing on Glass, have been performed throughout the United States. Other works include A Black and White Cookie, Walking Charlie, and A Tomato Can’t Grow in the Bronx. His latest work is The Silence of Our Friends. Author of seven novels, including his critically acclaimed dystopian trilogy (“1984 Meets Shoeless Joe”) “A Mound Over Hell” begins in 2098 after America and the West have lost World War Three to the Islamic Empire, as well as his Dark Trilogy series.

The production will be directed by Peter J. Loewy, the founder and Producing Artistic Director of The Forum Theatre Company in New Jersey.  Loewy has directed and/or produced over 100 plays, has worked extensively on Broadway, across the US, and in London.  Casting has begun, and the cast will be announced soon.

The reading is being produced by The Art of Humanity whose mission is to combat antisemitism, Holocaust denial, and bigotry through the arts and education.   For more information visit https://www.theartofhumanity.org.

DELRAY BEACH, FL: Boca Stage’s final production of the 2024/2025 season will be Dry Powder, a high finance comedy-drama by Sarah Burgess.  The production will run from April 25th through May 4th at the Delray Beach Playhouse.

Dry Powder is principally concerned with the world of private equity, and a firm’s founding partners as they compete to confront the fallout from a public relations crisis: The same week his private equity firm forced massive layoffs at a national grocery chain, Rick Hannel threw himself an extravagant engagement party, setting off a publicity nightmare. Fortunately, Seth, one of Rick’s partners, has a dream of a deal to invest in an American-made luggage company for a song that will rescue his boss from the PR disaster. But Jenny, Rick’s other partner, has an entirely different plan: to maximize returns, no matter the consequences.

Playwright Burgess was drawn to the play’s topic after working as a tutor for students preparing to take graduate school admissions tests, many of whom worked at investment firms like Goldman Sachs. “I was fascinated by the culture of the place,” she said in an interview with The Washington Post, explaining that the juxtaposition of moral responsibility with bankers’ complex, abstract business transactions seemed fertile ground for a satirical production.

“I am delighted to be directing Sarah Burgess’s clever, smart, witty play examining the intersection of modern finance and politics,” says the production’s director Genie Croft. “The script has biting insights into what truly constitutes the background of private equity. Dry Powder can refer to not only funds that are expendable, but people too. All four of the characters portrayed by this very talented cast, are tripped up by flaws they are unaware of and are unwilling to change, so as successful profiteers they very well know, it’s not about right and wrong or even business ventures – it’s all about the satisfaction – and the real price – of getting the deal done.”

Croft’s cast includes Autumn Kioti Horne as Jenny, Wayne LeGette as Rick, Michael Scott Ross as Seth, and Christopher Dreeson as Jeff.

The Stage Manager Dry Powder is Joseph Zettelmaier.  The production’s Technical Director is Christian Taylor, Set Design is by Claudia Smith, Lighting Design is by Stevie Bleich, Sound Design is by David Hart, and Costume Design is by Timothy Charles Bowman.

DELRAY BEACH, FL: Boca Stage’s third production of the 2024/2025 season will be Living on Love, the delightful comedic romp adapted from the Garson Kanin play Peccadillo by award-winning playwright Joe DiPietro.  The production will run from January 17th through January 26th at the Delray Beach Playhouse.
In this insane comedy set in New York City in 1957, the entertainment business is skewered and satirized with two characters, “Raquel”, the leading opera diva of the day and “Vito”, her husband, the equally short-tempered, egomaniacal Italian maestro. These two, through their petty jealousies, comically manipulate each other’s feelings as they square off to write their individual memoirs with the help of some befuddled ghostwriters, all the while exhausting their household staff.

“We picked this play to keep the season diverse with an all-out comedy” says Living on Love’s director Keith Garsson. “We have a terrific cast, well suited to their roles: Mallory Newbrough – well known for her dynamic musical performances – will make her Boca Stage debut as the Diva.  She is equally matched by Boca Stage regular Wayne LeGette as her short-fused Maestro husband.  Delray Beach Playhouse regular Jim Tyminski and Boca Stage regular Amber Lynn Benson play the put upon ghostwriters continually exhausted by the bickering couple’s endless shenanigans.  And we welcome Jack Stein and Matt Schenck as the loyal yet continually put-upon house staff – always one step ahead of their employers.

“You never know what’s going to come out of this crazy couple’s mouths,” Garsson continues. “Upon first reading I could not believe the sheer savage glee this couple took in teasing and taunting each other. The play is a complete takedown of New York’s privileged class.”

The Stage Manager for Living on Love is Joseph Long.  The production’s Technical Director is Christian Taylor, Set Design is by Claudia Smith, Lighting Design is by Stevie Bleich, Sound Design is by David Hart, Costume Design is by Timothy Charles Bowman, and wigs are by Jim Buff.

Tickets for Living on Love are on sale now. Theyrange in price from $59 to $69 and are available online at delraybeachplayhouse.com or by calling 561-272-1281. DELRAY BEACH, FL: Boca Stage’s second production of the 2024-2025 season will be The Last Night of Ballyhoo by Pulitzer Prize/Tony Award/and Academy Award-winning playwright Alfred Uhry. The production will run from October 24th to November 3rd in the Cabaret Theatre at the Delray Beach Playhouse.

“The Last Night of Ballyhoo is the second of playwright Alfred Uhry’s ‘Atlanta Trilogy’ which, although it follows Driving Miss Daisy, takes place twenty-five years earlier as World War II is just on the horizon and Gone with the Wind is about to become a movie sensation,” the production’s director Keith Garsson explains.  (The third work in the trilogy, the musical Parade, recently enjoyed a successful revival on Broadway).

“In both Daisy and Ballyhoo, Uhry gives us characters who share a common experience of alienation yet cannot communicate with each other”, Garsson continues.

“Ballyhoo, told on a larger canvas, flips the traditional story of the assimilation of twentieth-century American Jews on its head,” he says. “Instead of the humorous Neil Simon tales of woe, neuroses and insecurities in New York City, Ballyhoo tells a much darker story with more serious themes of identity.

“The German-Jews of this story settled in Atlanta and became successful business folks. Yet, unlike their New York counterparts who continued to embrace their religion, the protagonists of Ballyhoo slowly shed their own backgrounds as they longed for acceptance in the upper crust of Southern society. Although the play may be seen as a search for identity, it is also by turns humorous, touching, and fascinating.

“We’ve all been outsiders at some point in our lives and Ballyhoo masterfully balances the sometimes-painful journey of a family that is forced to finally decide who they want to be.”

Director Garsson’s talented cast includes Hannah Hayley as Lala, Liz DeBeer as Reba, Betty Ann Hunt Strain as Boo, Shane Tanner as Adolph, Alex Bakalarz as Joe, Rachel Whittington as Sunny, and Christian Cooper as Peachy.

The Stage Manager for The Last Night of Ballyhoo is Joseph Long.  The production’s Technical Director is Christian Taylor, Set Design is by Claudia Smith, Lighting Design is by Stevie Bleich, Sound Design is by David Hart, Costume Design is by Timothy Charles Bowman, and Jeff Davis will take care of Set Construction.

DELRAY BEACH, FL: Now in its fifth year of producing one-act plays by local playwrights, the Delray Beach Playhouse’s Festival of New Plays 2024 will be held on October 19th and 20th. Ten one-act plays by local playwrights, helmed by local directors, and read by local actors will showcase the diverse and talented South Florida theatrical community.  The event will take place at the Delray Beach Playhouse.

Festival Director and Co-Founder Marianne Regan continues to build on the Project’s success and offers new and exciting changes for Festival 2024.  “We have three new directors this year,” Regan reveals, “as well as several new playwrights. And some of our returning playwrights have accumulated their own following.”

This year’s Festival playwrights include Jeff Perlman, Jim Bisco, Laura Ratto, Judy Marilyn Goldstein, Sam Leven, Todd Caster, Ambar Colon, Allison Fradkin, Kathryn Ryan and Katherine H. Vellis.

“I truly had no idea that South Florida was so chock-full of incredible talent both on and off the stage,” Regan continues. “Our playwrights are amazing, our actors are extraordinary, and our audience members continue to support us, year-after-year.

“And as we did last year with a ‘sneak peek’ of our stand-alone show, Tell Me A Story, this Festival will also feature two new performers and their personal-story monologues,” Regan says.  “So many people have a story to tell, and this is one way for us to give them that space to tell it.”

Tell Me A Story will launch its own performance day on Thursday, January 29, 2025, as part of the Playhouse lunch-box matinee series, and will feature 6 artists performing personal monologues.

Dan Bellante – art historian and Festival Co-Founder – believes all the exciting changes at the Playhouse are ushering in a new era of artistic accomplishment. Now in its 77th year of continuous operation, the Playhouse continues to expand on its beyond-compare production values and is attracting a new audience of season subscribers who will sustain and ensure the theatre’s future.

David Tressler is the artist winner who designed the feature poster for Festival 2024. A native South Floridian, David was inspired to begin his artistic journey by his daughter, who loves to color. After some time, and many, many pages of coloring, he thought to himself, “this looks pretty good.” David’s infectious enthusiasm exemplifies the Festival’s creative spirit: “opportunities are endless, you just have to walk into them.”

As the Festival has done in the past, five new plays will be presented on Saturday, October 19th, and five different new plays will be presented on Sunday, October 20th.  Both performances begin at 2 pm. Tickets for each day are $20. In true Festival fashion, a “Festival Pass” which includes both days is available for $30.  Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased online (click HERE) or by phone at 561-272-1281.

The ten selected plays are:

Daddy Speaks by Sam Leven
Donald Alden For Hire by Jim Bisco
Ghost and Ghosted by Kathryn Ryan
Heard Mentality by Allison Fradkin
Infomercial by Judy Marilyn Goldstein
Pandora 2.0 by Katherine H. Vellis
The Café on Main by Jeff Perlman
The Family Tree by Laura Ratto
Tale of the Tiger’s Ring by Todd Caster
Wilted Amaryllis by Ambar Colon

All performances will take place at the Delray Beach Playhouse – 950 NW 9th Street, in Delray Beach (33444). For more information, please contact delraybeachplayhouse@gmail.com or Carol Kassie at carol@carolkassie.com.

DELRAY BEACH, FL:  Boca Stage’s first production of the 2024-2025 season will be playwright Kim Powers’ Sidekicked, an illuminating study of one of television’s – and America’s – iconic characters. The production will run from September 19 – 29 in the Cabaret Theatre at the Delray Beach Playhouse.

It’s the last night on set filming I Love Lucy and America’s favorite housecoat-wearing sidekick, Ethel Mertz, played by Vivian Vance, has a lot to get off her chest.

“I am delighted we are opening our season with a play about this award-winning American television and theatre actress and singer,” says the production’s director Genie Croft.  Vivian Vance was often referred to as TV ‘s most beloved “second banana” and America’s favorite neighbor Ethel Mertz, sidekick to Lucille Ball, on the enormously popular TV show I Love Lucy. Though the role brought Vance fame it took quite a personal toll.

“In this fascinating and in-depth character play, we meet an exciting and vibrant woman who did not at all resemble the frumpy Ethel she made famous.  Long before her television career, Vance was well known as a comedic actress, show girl, and singer who worked with major stars like Ethel Merman, Jimmy Durante and Bob Hope.” Croft explains. “Vivian was plagued by terrible bouts of depression and insecurities and worries about the loss of her own identity. She once said, “When I die, there will be people who send Ethel Mertz flowers.” She was deeply afraid of losing her mind and was one of the first celebrities to speak openly about mental illness.

“I am so pleased that Irene Adjan will be creating this iconic character,” Croft continues. “Irene has the profound ability to bring to life the many facets of Vivian Vance, and to create the behind- the-scenes stories of the show and its dynamics, feuds, and friendships.”

“Ethel Mertz is a character so many people grew up knowing and loving,” Adjan says, “However, very few people can tell you anything about the wonderful actress who played her – Vivian Vance.  I’ve been surprised at how many people – upon my sharing that I’d be doing this play -couldn’t even recall her real name, which is one of the things that plagued Vivian her entire career post I Love Lucy.  Vivian was an astounding comedian, a really complicated person, and seeing this play will be a great opportunity for people to learn and be surprised by how much they don’t know about someone they feel they know so well!”

Tickets for Sidekicked are on sale now. They range in price from $59 to $69 and are available online at delraybeachplayhouse.com or by calling 561-272-1281. DELRAY BEACH, FL:  Boca Stage has announced their production schedule for 2024-2025. The award-winning company will revert back to a four-show season, producing a diverse selection of plays ranging from topical and edgy to timeless classics and full out farce.

The 2024-2025 productions are Sidekicked by Kim Powers, The Last Night of Ballyhoo by Alfred Uhry, Living on Love by Joe DiPietro, and Dry Powder by Sarah Burgess. (Show descriptions/details below).  Boca Stage Founder and Executive Director Keith Garsson will share directing duties with his longtime theatrical collaborator Genie Croft.

“We are so pleased to have been invited back to the Delray Beach Playhouse after our first successful season here,” Garsson says.  “Our transition was seamless thanks to the royal treatment we received from the entire Playhouse team.

“This will be our first season planned completely in conjunction with the Playhouse’ schedule,” he continues. We’re back to four shows, and we’ve chosen a great mix of drama, dramedies, and pure comedy.  Two of our four shows are South Florida premieres, and one is a fan favorite.

“Our new space in the Cabaret Theater at the Playhouse has proven to be very popular with our audiences.  As an added bonus, our subscribers no longer need worry about being ‘transferred’ or face any other seating issues as they will now be booked directly into seats of their own choosing,” he says.

Subscriptions to the Boca Stage 2024-2025 season will be on sale beginning April 15. The individual ticket sales date is still to be announced.

The Delray Beach Playhouse is located at 950 NW 9th Street, in Delray Beach, 33444. (561-272-1281).  For more information about the Playhouse, visit delraybeachplayhouse.com.

DELRAY BEACH, FL:  Boca Stage’s first production in their new home at the Delray Beach Playhouse will be Frederick Knott’s classic thriller, Wait Until Dark.  The production will run in the Playhouse’s Cabaret Theatre from October 27th through November 5th.

“Boca Stage has held off for years on producing a version of Frederick Knott’s Wait Until Dark because we felt his original script, with its roots in the drug-infested New York City of the 1960s and its myriad dated elements would no longer resonate with modern audiences,” says Keith Garrsson, Boca Stage’s Founder, Executive Producer, and the production’s Director.

“However, in 2013, playwright and author Jeffrey Hatcher (Tuesdays with Morrie), updated the 1964 script by resetting the show in 1944, just at the end of World War II while keeping its New York City locale,” he continues. “This newly updated script is now tighter, faster, and no longer dated.”

The plot:  In 1944 Greenwich Village, Susan Hendrix, a blind yet capable woman, is imperiled by a trio of men in her own apartment. As the climax builds, Susan discovers that her blindness just might be the key to her escape, but she and her tormentors must wait until dark to play out this classic thriller’s chilling conclusion.

“The MacGuffin in this play is the cache of diamonds that has been, through some very strange circumstances placed somewhere in Susan’s Greenwich Village basement apartment and the quest of some very bad guys to retrieve it,” Garsson explains. “Blood will be spilled, people will die…  Wait Until Dark represents our first time (stab?!) at a pure thriller, a cat-and-mouse chase complete with double-crosses, triple-crosses, and some very challenging staging.

“Fortunately,” Garsson says, “A top-notch cast and crew will make this endeavor a great ride through a theater classic.”

Garsson has cast Rachel Whittington as Susan, Shane Tanner as Roat, Rio Chavarro as Mike, Troy Stanley as Carlino, Michael Coppola as Sam, and Ellie Rose as Gloria.

The Stage Manager for Wait Until Dark is James Danford. Cindi Blank Taylor is the show’s Scenic Designer, and Andre Lancaster will create the Sound and Light Design, and serve as the show’s Technical Director. Backstage Managers are Anne Solomons and Eric Fields.

Tickets for Wait Until Dark range in price from $39 to $69 and are available online at delraybeachplayhouse.com or by calling 561-272-1281. Performances are on Friday and Saturday at 2 pm and 8 pm, and on Sunday at 2 pm. There will also be a performance on Thursday, October 26th at 8 pm. DELRAY BEACH, FL:  Boca Stage is on the move.  The award-winning theatre company will take up residence at the Delray Beach Playhouse in October.  The well-respected company has expanded its subscriber base and attendance rate over the past few seasons to the point where there was a definite need for more seats; the move will double the audience capacity from 70 to over 140.  The company will perform in the black box/cabaret hall of the Playhouse.

Boca Stage is known for its mounting of a wide variety of works – from topical, timely, and edgy to classics and comedy.  Their programming is geared towards theatregoers of all ages and stages, and their recent productions have garnered excellent reviews along with full houses.

“We are very grateful to Kevin Barrett and the staff at Delray Beach Playhouse for this opportunity to co-produce our works in a bigger venue,” says Boca Stage Artistic Director and founder Keith Garsson. “We are anxious to provide additional quality productions to add to this historical venue which has served the larger community for over half a century.”

Boca Stage’s 2023 season will consist of three very different pieces:  an updated version of the classic suspense thriller Wait Until Dark; Boeing Boeing, a delightful 1960s comedy about airlines and timetables; and America’s Sexiest Couple, a comedy featuring two of South Florida’s finest actors.  (See below for more information about each play.)

Tickets for all three productions will be on sale soon.

The Delray Beach Playhouse, which first opened its doors in 1947, has become a beloved fixture in the South Florida theatrical community, and boasts a large, strong, and supportive membership composed of both year-round and seasonal patrons.   The addition of Boca Stage as a resident theatre company will offer their own subscriber and audience base, as well as that of the Playhouse, an even wider variety of theatrical options to choose from.
