July 18, 2023

WEST PALM BEACH, FL:  MNM Theatre Company will present Five Guys Named Moe,playwright Clarke Peters exciting, exhilarating, and exuberantly loving tribute to Jazz legend Louis Jordan and his music from September 8th through September 24th in the Rinker Playhouse at the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts.

The September 8th opening date will also mark the official launch of MNM’s updated website and the introduction of the company’s brand-new logo.

Five Guys Named Moe is based on a 1943 musical short of the same name by Louis Jordan himself.  It had its UK debut in 1990 at Theatre Royal Stratford East, running for over four years in the West End, and then premiering on Broadway in 1992, where it was nominated for two Tony Awards.  It was revived in 2010 at the Edinburgh Festival, starring the show’s playwright Clarke Peters and returned later in 2010 to the theatre in which it originally premiered. The musical won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Entertainment.

Nomax has run out of money and his girlfriend has left him.  He needs comfort, support, and advice.  Emerging from his 1930s-style radio are Five Guys Named Moe:  Big Moe, Four-Eyed Moe, Eat Moe, No Moe, and Little Moe, who harmonize, croon, wail, tap, and joke… and provide Nomax with just what he needs, all in the form of Louis Jordan’s hit songs and music.

The show’s director, Jacquez Linder-Long is a former Moe himself.  “I’m very excited to be presenting this show from the ‘other side of the table’ this time around,” he says.   “It means a lot to me because Louis Jordan and the Tymphany 5’s hits are what my grandmother Merdis Moore and I had echoing through my home as a child. It is a big part of where my style and love for storytelling comes from.”

Linder-Long is a Dreyfoos School of the Arts graduate, and a former student of MNM Theatre Company’s Producing Artistic Director and CEO Marcie Gorman, so being able to direct the show for MNM is particularly significant. “To me MNM means “chance””, he says.  “I came to Marcie Gorman and her company with my vision and from day one we have been working to make that vision into reality – to present to audiences a show of African American Legacy and culture through timeless music, song, and dance.”

Linder-Long, who will not only direct, but will also choreograph the show, has cast James White III as No Max, Don Seward as No Moe, Doriyan Caty as Eat Moe, T.J. Pursley as Little Moe, Michael Wallace as Four-Eyed Moe, and Leo Jasper Davis as Big Moe. Desir Dumerjuste is the show’s swing.

Five Guys Named Moe’s Musical Director Bobby Peaco has assembled a top-notch band for the production, including Palm Beach Post columnist Frank Cerabino (saxophone), Julie Jacobs (drums), and Rupert Ziawinski (bass).

Jazz Madison will serve as Five Guys’ Assistant Director, and Annaya Osborne is the Assistant Choreographer.  Harold Petion is the Production Stage Manager, and Belicia Linder-Long will create the costumes for the production. Lighting Design is by Karalyn Fitzgerald, Sound Design is by Justin Thompson, and the show’s Set Designer is Jordon Armstrong.

As a bandleader in the 1940’s Louis Jordan pioneered a wildly popular blend of jazz and blues. The swinging shuffle rhythms played by singer/saxophonist Jordan and his Tympany Five became known as “jump blues” or “jumpin’ jive,” and served as a forerunner of rhythm and blues and rock ‘n’ roll. At the height of his career he scored 18 number-one hit records – four of his songs are in the Grammy Hall of Fame which honors recordings of lasting qualitative or historical significance. Jordan performed songs that appealed to millions of Black and White listeners. Able to “straddle the fence” between these two audiences, Jordan emerged as one of the first successful crossover artists of American popular music.

Clarke Peters (Playwright) is an actor, singer and writer. He earned a Tony Award nomination for Best Book of a Musical for Five Guys Named Moe. As an actor, he has appeared on Broadway in The Iceman Cometh (Theatre World Award) and as Billy Flynn in the revival of Chicago. Clarke’s London credits include Guys and Dolls, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, The Passion and Dispatches at the Royal National Theatre. His West End credits include Blues in the Night, Porgy and Bess, The Witches of Eastwick, and Chicago. In regional theater he has appeared in Driving Miss Daisy, The Wiz, Bubbling Brown Sugar, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Carmen Jones and The Amen Corner. Clarke is familiar to television viewers for his roles on The Wire, Treme and The Divide. His film credits include Mona Lisa, Notting Hill, Marley & Me, Endgame, John Wick, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri, Harriet, and Da 5 Bloods. As a director, his credits include Blues for Mr. Charlie, Fascinating Aida, King and Martin Luther.

Five Guys Named Moe will run from September 8 – 24 in the Rinker Playhouse at the Kravis Center for the Performing arts in West Palm Beach.

Tickets for Five Guys Named Moe range in price from $45 to $55 and are on sale now at www.kravis.org.  Group rates are also available.

DELRAY BEACH, FL:  Boca Stage is on the move.  The award-winning theatre company will take up residence at the Delray Beach Playhouse in October.  The well-respected company has expanded its subscriber base and attendance rate over the past few seasons to the point where there was a definite need for more seats; the move will double the audience capacity from 70 to over 140.  The company will perform in the black box/cabaret hall of the Playhouse.

Boca Stage is known for its mounting of a wide variety of works – from topical, timely, and edgy to classics and comedy.  Their programming is geared towards theatregoers of all ages and stages, and their recent productions have garnered excellent reviews along with full houses.

“We are very grateful to Kevin Barrett and the staff at Delray Beach Playhouse for this opportunity to co-produce our works in a bigger venue,” says Boca Stage Artistic Director and founder Keith Garsson. “We are anxious to provide additional quality productions to add to this historical venue which has served the larger community for over half a century.”

Boca Stage’s 2023 season will consist of three very different pieces:  an updated version of the classic suspense thriller Wait Until Dark; Boeing Boeing, a delightful 1960s comedy about airlines and timetables; and America’s Sexiest Couple, a comedy featuring two of South Florida’s finest actors.  (See below for more information about each play.)

Tickets for all three productions will be on sale soon.

The Delray Beach Playhouse, which first opened its doors in 1947, has become a beloved fixture in the South Florida theatrical community, and boasts a large, strong, and supportive membership composed of both year-round and seasonal patrons.   The addition of Boca Stage as a resident theatre company will offer their own subscriber and audience base, as well as that of the Playhouse, an even wider variety of theatrical options to choose from.

For more information about Boca Stage, the Delray Beach Playhouse, and Keith Garsson, please contact Carol Kassie at carol@carolkassie.com / 561-445-9244.

The Delray Beach Playhouse is located at 950 NW 9th Street, in Delray Beach, 33444. (561-272-1281).

Classes will take place at Sol Theatre in Boca Raton from July 24th through August 4th.  The program is spearheaded by Shakespeare Troupe founder Peter Galman.

Professional actors will conduct master classes, teaching the principles of vocal projection, diction, text analysis, verse management, character portrayal, and self-staging techniques. The workshops – open to a maximum of 20 students – will culminate with a staged reading of scenes from Shakespeare showcasing the trainees’ development as classical actors, and will be open to the public. Each student will take away a classic monologue to use in auditions.

Fellow Shakespeare Troupe teaching artists, who specialize in voice, movement, and music will join Galman in conducting the 5-hour sessions.

Peter Galman

“More workshops and classes are in the works for actors of all ages,” Galman says.  “And we are pleased to announce they will take place in our new home, Boca Raton’s Sol Theatre.”

Tuition for the 10-day Shakespeare Lives! workshop is $250.  Students will be accepted through audition or a self-tape submission.

For more information please contact Shakespeare Troupe of South Florida at 754-228-7228 / anon@shakestroupe.org or visit the company’s website at https://www.shakestroupe.org.
Sol Theater is located at 3333 North Federal Highway, in Boca Raton (33431).

Shakespeare Lives! is sponsored by the Cultural Council of Palm Beach County.

Shakespeare Troupe of South Florida’s mission is to build engagement and appreciation of the text of William Shakespeare through immersive and educational theatrical experiences.
Founded by Peter Galman in 2016 to commemorate the Bard’s 400th birthday, the Troupe has participated in numerous events, including the weeklong intensive World of Shakespeare Program in March 2017 at the Cushman School in Miami. In 2018-2019 the Troupe toured dozens of schools, venues, and cultural centers, reaching 10,000 audience members, many of whom were new to the works of William Shakespeare.

Peter Galman was born in Chicago, trained under a scholarship at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, and completed graduate studies under legendary teacher Stella Adler. After beginning his professional career with Joseph Papp’s New York Shakespeare Festival, he appeared regularly as the troubled Tom Hughes on the daytime serial “As the World Turns” for five years while moonlighting on Broadway and off-Broadway in New York. After a hiatus from his art to raise a family on Long Island, he returned to his passion and joined the ensemble of the Actors Shakespeare Company of Jersey City, New Jersey, where he played many roles, including Prospero, Claudius, Lear, Bottom, and Shylock. It was there he developed his exploration of First Folio text and gained teaching and artist experience in the ASC school programs. His earliest Shakespeare roles were in the early summer seasons of the Colorado Shakespeare Festival, where he developed vocal projection skills and rapier and dagger stage fighting techniques.

The Playhouse, which first opened its doors in 1947, has become a beloved fixture in South Florida theatrical community, and boasts large, strong, and supportive membership composed of year-round and seasonal patrons, an excellent roster of local talent both backstage and front of house, and an enthusiastic and committed team of volunteers.

This year’s Mainstage Play Series will begin with She Loves Me, the award-winning musical by Jerry Brock and Sheldon Harnick (Fiddler on the Roof). The Playhouse’ next production Grumpy Old Men, the successful musical adaptation of the 1993 hit film of the same name, will be followed by Stephen Sondheim’s Merrily We Roll Along. The Lost Virginity Tour will round out what promises to be an extremely enjoyable season.

After his successful run at the Playhouse with his award-winning show Wiesenthal last season, playwright/actor/director Tom Dugan will perform in the regional premiere of his play, Tevye in New York.

The Best of Broadway Cabaret Series, which will replace the Musical Memories Concert Series, will be headlined by internationally known Broadway, television, and film star Tovah Feldshuh in her newest show Aging is Optional.  Other concerts in the Broadway series include Ann Talman: Elizabeth Taylor and the Shadow of her Smile, From Broadway With Love (From Funny Girl & 42nd Street to Miss Saigon & Phantom of the Opera), It’s De-Lovely: Jeff Harner Sings Cole Porter, and Something Wonderful: Laura Yanez Sings Rogers & Hammerstein.

The PinkSlip Duo returns to the Playhouse with new concerts for the Feelin’ Groovy Series:  A Time for Peace:  The Life and Song of Pete Seeger, Imagine:  The Life and Song of John Lennon, and 60s Pop Chart Hits You Didn’t Know Came From Canada.

By Tom Dugan

Based on the beloved characters of Sholem Aleichem and from Tom Dugan, the writer and star of Wiesenthal, comes the World Premiere of his newest play Tevye in New York! Ever wonder what happened to Tevye, wife Golde and his daughters after the curtain came down in Fiddler on the Roof? Tevye in New York! finally answers those decades-old questions. Follow Tevye as he fights for his piece of the American dream in 1914—from his journey with his daughters across the Atlantic Ocean, through Ellis Island, past “the big green lady,” and into the crowded streets of Manhattan’s Lower East Side.  Tevye In New York! is a magical tale filled with laughter, heartbreak, and joy, as Tevye tries to balance tradition with what it means to be an American Jew.

Grumpy Old Men
Book by Dan Remmes
Music by Neil Berg
Lyrics by Nick Meglin

Grumpy Old Men is the story of two aging men, Max and John, neighbors who have been feuding for most of their lives. Invigorated by their shared affection for their new neighbor across the street, the beautiful, eccentric, and charming Ariel, they face-off as romantic rivals until their hilarious shenanigans finally bring about a resolution to their long-standing differences. Based on the 1993 film, which starred Jack Lemmon, Walter Matthau, and Ann-Margret, this stage adaptation captures the lovably crotchety characters through twinkling humor, great songs, and the affectionate depiction of a small town that feels like home to everyone.

March 22 – April 7, 2024

BOCA RATON, FL:  Off-Glades Theater Company, a brand-new theatre company based in Boca Raton, Florida, will present 13 The Musical at Olympic Heights High School June 23rd and 24th only.

Founded by teacher/author/Broadway actor Jodie Langel, who serves as the company’s Executive Director, Off-Glades Theater Company was launched in 2022 to promote and produce musical theatre in South Florida for the cultural development of young people in the performing arts.

Jodie Langel

“What is striking about 13 is that it conveys emotions and insecurities that not only teenagers relate to – but that everyone does,” Langel says.  “At its core, it’s a show about the raw vulnerability that comes with being true to yourself – something that resonates with people of all ages.”

Evan Goldman has it all: He’s popular, has the “perfect” family and lives in the world’s greatest city – New York. But when his parents divorce, he’s forced to move with his Mom…to Indiana. Uprooted from his old life, he must maneuver his way through the minefield of high school to become part of the ‘in’ crowd.

Featuring a rock score by celebrated composer Jason Robert Brown (Parade, The Last Five Years, Songs for a New World), 13 will be performed by an astonishing cast of young local talent. 13 The Musical is a grown-up story about dealing with change and learning that becoming who you want to be starts with discovering who you are.

Langel’s talented cast includes Kane Quiles as Evan, Leah Steiner as Patrice, Sebastian Baroulette as Brett, Victoria Johnson as Lucy, Jonathan Jacknow as Archie, Eddie Albeio as Malcolm, Anthony Cirisano as Eddie, Aliyah Harrow as Kendra, Sofia Gianetti as Molly, Tommy Cook as Richie, Miranda Ferreira as Charlotte, Mia Spector as Cassie, and Mateo Lepore as Simon.  Also in the cast are Gabriella Roache, Mina Howard, Kylie Staub, Emma Nevico, Ella Valente, and Alisa Voloshina.

Michael Ursua is the production’s Musical Director; the Assistant Director is Nicole Roach, and Brittany Blouin will serve as the production’s Stage Manager.

May 2, 2023:

BOCA RATON:    Mel Brooks’ musical comedy The Producers won a record-setting 12 Tonys in 2001, including Best Musical – the most in the awards’ history.  It also set the standard for outrageous, in-your-face, politically incorrect humor. Entr’Acte Theatrix will present what Variety’s Charles Isherwood called “a rip-roaring, gut-busting, rib-tickling, knee-slapping, aisle-rolling … good time” musical at the Willow Theatre at Sugar Sand Park. The show will open on May 19th and run through June 4th.

The plot is simple: Failed producer Max Bialystock and his reluctant accountant, Leo Bloom, cook up a scheme to convince a group of elderly women to invest two million dollars in a horrendously offensive Third Reich-themed musical, which they know will be a sure-fire flop. This, they conclude, will leave them with the money, which they plan to use to retire to Rio.  But against all odds the show is a hit, and Bialystock and Bloom have to deal with their success.

“During these difficult times when once again we are seeing the rise of antisemitism, we debated very carefully about doing this show,” Entr’Acte Theatrix Executive Producer Vicki Halmos explains.  “But in the end we decided that as Mel Brooks – who himself was a constant recipient of prejudice during his time in the US army – so rightly said, “More than anything the Holocaust by the Nazis is probably the great outrage of the 20th century. There is nothing to compare with it. And … so what can I do about it? If I get on the soapbox and wax eloquently, it’ll be blown away in the wind, but if I do “Springtime for Hitler” it’ll never be forgotten. I think you can bring down totalitarian governments faster by using ridicule than you can with invective.”

“We at Entr’Acte hope that by taking this absurd and politically incorrect look at a horrendous time in history (not to mention the way Brooks lampoons the ‘art of the deal’ in the business of theatre) we can entertain and educate at the same time,” Halmos says.

Entr’Acte Theatrix will donate a portion of their ticket sales to the Holocaust Museum in Miami.

The Producers Director Jamie Mattocks has cast Carlo-Rufino Sabusap as Max Bialystock, Chris Embroz as Leo Bloom, Zoe Darragh Garnett as Ulla Inga Hansen Bensen, Greg Halmos as Franz Liebkind, Jonathan Costanzo as Roger Debris, and Michael ‘Mercury’ Moser as Garmen Ghia.  Other cast members include Nik Rosa, Nicolas Aquino, David McKibben, Matthew Schenk, Charles Ponthokkan, Chris Calhoun, Norita Bandel, Heidi Salonia, Martyna Reczka, Roxanne Lamendola Grant, JB Peters, and Elizabeth Robinson.

Along with her directing duties, Jamie Mattocks will serve as The Producers’ Choreographer.  Roger Blankenship is the show’s Musical Director. Nicole Stav-Roach is Assistant Director, and Brittany Blouin will serve as the Production Stage Manager.

The Producers will run from May 19th – June 4th at the Willow Theatre at Sugar Sand Park. The theatre is located at 300 S. Military Trail in Boca Raton (33486).
