“… a little gem that has a pretty satisfying mystery at its center…you get to absorb Lanford Wilson’s terrific dialogue, and appreciate how and when he reveals precisely what we need to know in the natural flow of the narrative.” – MichiganLive

March 26, 2015

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL: Landford Wilson’s Redwood Curtain is a thought-provoking exploration of memories – of families, of secrets, and of war – set in the towering redwood forests of Northern California. The play stunned 1992 Broadway audiences with its unique spin on a Vietnam veteran and the mysterious young Asian woman who tracks him down.

Primal Forces Productions will present this powerful commentary on the effects of war and remembrance from April 17th through May 3rd at Andrews Living Arts in Fort Lauderdale. And in keeping with the play’s theme, a percentage of the production’s revenue will be donated to Broward County’s VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) Post 8195.

“With Redwood Curtain Primal Forces concludes its three-play series on the effects of the counterculture on today’s generation,” says producer Keith Garsson. “The play was written by Pulitzer Prize-winner Lanford Wilson, who was an early force in the off-Broadway theatre of the 1960s and 70s. This being the last of our trilogy, we are finishing on a lighter and more hopeful tone than was presented in both The Anarchist and Sunset Baby.

“Wilson’s characters are usually lost or forgotten Americans, left high and dry by events beyond their control,” Garsson continues, “However his characters eschew preaching and sermonizing and have accepted their fate – presented as headstrong forces within the ensuing drama. Redwood Curtain  adds a new touch: the character of Geri, a young woman who endures a lonely and mysterious journey into the Redwood Forest to seek answers to her own past, but learns some shattering truths along the way.”

“Redwood Curtain was Wilson’s last show produced for Broadway, however, as in our prior productions we felt the intimacy of the drama would be enhanced by the up-close-and-personal setting of Andrews Living Arts,” Garsson explains. “And we’re fortunate to have a South Florida legend, set designer Tim Bennett, who has recreated one of the most beautiful areas of the country on stage.”

The production will star Ethan Henry, Laura Turnbull, and newcomer Amarie Lee.
Redwood---trioHenry who received rave reviews in Primal Forces’ recent production of Sunset Baby, is fascinated by his character, and the play: “This is one of the most challenging plays I’ve ever read,” he says. “My character, Lyman Fellers, has chosen to seclude himself in the woods, and he wants to be left alone; but he’s forced to look inside himself when he’s confronted by someone else.”

The Florida Veterans of Foreign Wars has a rich tradition of serving veterans, military families and their local communities. Twenty-three members of Post 8195, under the guidance of Post Commander Bobby White, recently collaborated on a book titled Post 8195: Black Soldiers Tell Their Vietnam Stories. The entire proceeds from the play’s opening night performance and reception as well as a percentage of the funds generated by all Redwood Curtain ticket sales will be donated to Post 8195; the book will be available for sale at Andrews Living Arts during the run of the play.

Tickets for Redwood Curtain are $25 ($12.50 for veterans) and can be purchased on line at www.primalforcesproductions.com, or by phone at 866-811-4111. Andrews Living Arts Studio is located at 23 NW Fifth Street in Fort Lauderdale.

Post 8195: Black Soldiers Tell Their Vietnam Stories, by Bobby White
VFW Post 8195 in West Park, Florida, through the Stone of Hope Program, organized services and programs to help Vietnam and other military veterans and their families who had special needs. “The Vietnam War was physically, spiritually and emotionally exhausting for us,” says Post Commander Bobby White. In this unique collection, he has brought together the words of 23 veterans who witnessed the war’s cruelty and brutality. Through their testimonies, White reminds us that the war’s impact has been long-lasting, with both negative and positive results. Readers will be riveted by their narratives of racism, hostile battlefields, ambush zones, fire fights, land mines, flashbacks, search-and-destroy missions, military police operations, working with K-9s, and finally addressing and putting the PTSD issues at ease.
Available at Amazon.com.

Critical Praise for Redwood Curtain:

“Redwood Curtain” is … a state-of-the-nation piece for the early 1990’s. Its disturbing subject is the self-destructive American habit of practicing amnesia about all its past nightmares, not just those of Vietnam. Standing in rootless contrast to the trees around them, the people in this play, and by implication their country, cannot find their way out of the woods until they figure out how they got stranded there in the first place.” – NY Times

“Redwood Curtain is equal parts fairy tale, mystery and comedy. Wilson skillfully blends fantastic, magical, suspenseful, and human elements to produce an intimate human drama.” – Variety

“A journey into the American psyche . . . The gritty and/or down home realism of Wilson’s best plays has been combined with magical qualities that make the work a kind of folk/fairy mystery tale.” – Seattle Times

MARGATE, FL: Jon Peterson will return to the Stage Door Theatre on March 20th in George M. Cohan Tonight! an entertaining and energetic one-man musical based on the life and career of one of America’s most beloved song and dance men. Jon Peterson as George M. Cohan

Peterson, who has been called ‘a song-and-dance man with a flair’, has received consistently rave reviews everywhere he has performed the show. He expertly and captivatingly channels the passionate, charismatic, and incredibly talented Cohan in 95 fast-moving minutes. Peterson, a native of the UK, has had an extensive career in dance, and in musical comedy. He has performed in numerous productions, including Cats, 42nd Street, A Chorus Line, The Sound of Music, Dames at Sea, and Sophisticated Ladies. Peterson last appeared at the Stage Door Theatre in Song Man Dance Man.

George M. Cohan Tonight! was conceived and directed by Chip Deffaa, and earned Jon Peterson a Drama Desk nomination, and Deffaa an IRNE Award (Independent Reviewers of New England). Deffaa has created six different musicals about George M. Cohan, for variously sized casts and audiences.

The Addams Family – A New Musical Comedy
April 16 – May 3

They’re creepy… and they’re kooky…and they’re back!
Charles Addams’ weird and wonderful family comes to life in this
award-winning musical comedy.

THEATRE FOR THE ENTIRE FAMILY!

March 12, 2015

BOCA RATON, FL: Evening Star Productions’ audiences are in for a fiendishly delightful treat beginning April 16th when Boca Raton’s Sol Theatre will host Charles Addams’ wonderfully bizarre cast of characters known as The Addams Family. The award-winning musical – the show’s South Florida professional premiere – will run through May 3rd.

Charles Addams’ ghoulishly clever and devilishly satirical Addams Family cartoons first began appearing in the New Yorker magazine in 1938, and his characters captured the hearts and the humor of the American public almost immediately. A close knit, loving family, with a few odd quirks – and a definite affinity for the bizarre and macabre – the Addams Family has appeared in a number of film and television adaptations since their debut, however The Addams Family – A New Musical Comedy is based on Addams’ cartoons, rather than any of the characters as they were portrayed in film or on television.

Evening Star’s Artistic Director Rosalie Grant explains the reason she chose The Addams Family – A New Musical Comedy as the young company’s third outing of the season:

Rosalie Grant

Rosalie Grant

“Designing Sol Theatre’s seasons is always a challenge,” she says. “We need to include straight plays for young children and adults; musicals for children, teens and adults to perform in and audiences to enjoy; commedia one acts to tickle the funny bone; and edgy plays to create a little emotional havoc.  Our 2014 season was particularly important to me since it’s Evening Star’s sophomore outing.  I wanted to choose a musical that hasn’t been done by a professional theatre in South Florida, yet would provide us the opportunity to satisfy Evening Star’s mission statement at the same time as giving local performers and audiences something new.  There were a handful of musicals that fit this bill, but I kept coming back to The Addams Family – A New Musical Comedy.  It is being performed all over the country in high schools, and I can see how it is every high school director’s perfect choice for their drama programs … the music is difficult, the characters are iconic, the costuming, make up, set just so much fun!  But why not let adults have a little fun with it?!  And,” she continues, “Judging by how our Addams Family rehearsals are going with the amazing cast we have put together I made the right choice!”

Samantha Streich, who will play Morticia Addams agrees:
“I think the audience will really connect with this show,” she says.  “It’s nostalgic, because these people and their charmingly morbid family are so familiar for so many, but that’s not to say that there won’t be some surprises.  It pays homage to them in a really unique and fun way.”

George Macia is looking forward to his turn as Gomez Addams:
“He’s a very passionate and romantic character who surrounds himself with things that resemble death and darkness,” he explains. “Yet, he is very much in love with life, living, and loving. He is very educated, charismatic, witty, and elegant in his own very unorthodox way. As an actor this is a very exciting role to play”, he continues, “Because it covers lots of ground. It’s got humor, a bit of drama and great language fusion in its musical score and script.”

Evening Star’s other Addams Family members include Gisbert Heuer as Uncle Fester, Nicole Minardi as Grandma, Nicole Kinzel as Wednesday Addams, Tony Smyth as Pugsley Addams, Christopher Lam as Lurch, Murphy Hayes as Mal Beineke, Ember Everett as Alice Beineke, and Christopher Mitchell as Lucas Beineke. Lito Becerra, Robyn Eli Brenner, Steven Michael Kennedy, Brooke Hall, Sofia Manolesco, and Denise Michelle have also been cast.

Evening Star Productions’ The Addams Family – A New Musical Comedy will preview on April 16, and run from  from April 17 – May 3 at Sol Theatre in Boca Raton. Tickets are $25 or $10 for students. Group rates are also available. Tickets are on sale now, and can be purchased at the Sol Theatre box office at 561-447-8829 or on line at www.eveningstarproductions.org. “Gomez and Pugsley are enthusiastic. Morticia is even in disposition, muted, witty, sometimes deadly. Grandma Frump is foolishly good-natured. Wednesday is her mother’s daughter. A closely knit family, the real head being Morticia—although each of the others is a definite character—except for Grandma, who is easily led. Many of the troubles they have as a family are due to Grandma’s fumbling, weak character. The house is a wreck, of course, but this is a house-proud family just the same and every trap door is in good repair. Money is no problem…”   Charles Addams

The Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning musical that transformed the definition of modern musical theatre and changed Broadway forever!

 March 11, 2015:

BOCA RATON, FL: Slow Burn Theatre Company’s spring production is a perfect example of their continuing commitment to present ‘high quality, daring, contemporary and intelligent works of musical theatre’. Jonathan Larson’s Rent meets those qualifications on every level. The ground-breaking musical – the regional professional premiere – will run at the West Boca Performing Arts Theatre at West Boca High School from April 9th through April 26th.

Based on Puccini’s La Bohème, Rent first ran Off-Broadway, and transferred to Broadway’s Nederlander Theatre in April 1996. It won numerous Tony (including Best Musical), and Drama Desk Awards, as well as the 1996 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The play is set in a low rent loft apartment in New York’s East Village, and depicts “young … artists struggling to celebrate life in the shadow of drugs, poverty and AIDS,” Jonathan Wiederhorn wrote in Rolling Stone. Larson’s score blends pop, dance, dance, salsa, rhythm and blues, gospel, and rock music, while his characters update those of Puccini: Rodolfo, the lovelorn poet, is resurrected in punk-rocker Roger; Marcello the painter becomes Mark the videographer; Mimi trades tuberculosis for HIV. “In both productions,” Wiederhorn noted, “the main characters are threatened with eviction and burn their written work to stay warm.” Larson, however, leavens the lost dreams and lives with his show’s “emphasis on love, friendship, and survival.” Sadly, Jonathan Larson did not live to see his work’s success; he died the morning of Rent’s first preview Off-Broadway performance.

Rent has become an iconic piece of theatre since its 1996 debut – devotees of the play call themselves ‘Rentheads’, and boast of seeing the show multiple times. Director Patrick Fitzwater is aware of the phenomenon and promises although Slow Burn’s Rent will definitely be a contemporary version, it will equally please the plays most zealous fans.

“We’re so excited to breathe fresh new life into this classic musical of love, friendship and community; it’s the kind of show Slow Burn Theatre is in existence to produce”, says Patrick Fitzwater, Slow Burn’s Artistic Director. “I look forward to re-examining this piece with fresh eyes and ears and to present Rent to a new generation, as well as remind the ‘Renthead Generation’ why they fell in love with this show, and help them discover something new.”

The cast of Slow Burn Theatre’s Rent includes: Bruno Faria (Roger Davis), Mike Westrich (AEA) (Mark Cohen), Darrick Penny (Tom Collins), Rayner Garranchan (Benny), Christina Alexander (Joanne Jefferson), Bruno Vida (Angel), Abby Perkins (Mimi), Amy Miller Brennan (AEA) (Maureen) and an ensemble featuring: Erin Pittleman, Kayla Fast, Elisa Dannielle, Alexander Zenoz, Bradley Mack, Michael Friedman and Ross Parris.

The production will be directed and choreographed by Carbonell Award Winning Director Patrick Fitzwater (next to normal). Musical Direction is by Caryl Fantel, costumes by Rick Peña, scenic design by Sean McClelland , lighting design by Lance Blank, and sound design by Danny Butler.

Slow Burn Theatre Company is an award winning locally based professional theatre group providing South Florida’s diverse population with opportunities to experience high quality, daring, contemporary and intelligent works of musical theatre. Shows are selected that educate and provoke thought as well as entertain.

Rent will run for 12 performances – from April 9th through April 26th – at the West Boca Performing Arts Theater on the campus of West Boca Raton High School on Glades Road in Boca Raton. Performances are Thursdays, Fridays & Saturdays at 8pm, and Sundays at 2pm. Tickets can be purchased at slowburntheatre.org ,or by calling 866-811-4111.

DELRAY BEACH, FL: The Delray Beach Chorale’s spring concert, titled Festive Americana, will celebrate some of America’s greatest composers. Now in its 33rd season, under the direction of new Artistic Director Dr. Patricia P. Fleitas, the 65-voice chorale will perform at the Duncan Theatre in Lake Worth on Friday, March 20th at 7:30 pm and at the First Presbyterian Church in Delray Beach on Saturday, March 28th at 3:00 pm.

FLEITASColor1-200x300

Dr. Patricia Fleitas

Dr. Fleitas comes to the Chorale with more than twenty years of experience as the Director of Choral and Vocal Studies at Florida Atlantic University and years of serving as guest conductor of numerous musical organizations, including the Palm Beach Symphony. She is recognized for her excellence in teaching, performance and leadership and is a sought after choral judge and clinician.

“Our Spring 2015 concerts present an array of choral music by some of the great masters who define American music,” says Fleitas. “The diversity of styles will engage patrons in the kind of aesthetic exchange that only vocal music can offer.  From Howard Hanson’s setting of Walt Whitman’s poems, “Song of Democracy,” Aaron Copland’s “Old American Songs,” and other settings of great American poetry, to selections from Bernstein’s Candide, Gershwin and Porter songs, and patriotic arrangements, our Americana theme presents a program for all.”
2013-Delray-Chorale-23“This program is quite unique and exciting for us,” says long time Chorale member and board member Barry Ogrin. “It features the best of Americana, from Broadway show tunes from the great composers Leonard Bernstein and Cole Porter to a wonderful medley of Aaron Copland favorites.  It is guaranteed to entertain and make you just feel good about all that is great in this country.”

The Delray Beach Chorale’s mission is to promote and encourage the art of singing and to share the experience of great music with the community. Although their initial focus was on the classics of great choral literature, both traditional and contemporary, over the past several years they have broadened their musical scope.

The Chorale also operates a Music Academy Program, the only one of its kind in South Florida.  The young professional musicians selected as Artists-in-Residence perform as soloists with the chorale, act as section leaders, and provide instruction to a select group of talented high school singers who also sing with the chorale. These young performers will be showcased in the spring performances.

Tickets for the Delray Beach Chorale’s Spring Concert are $25 in advance and $30 the day of the concert.  $5 student tickets (under 25, with ID) are also available. Tickets can be purchased on-line at http://delraybeachchorale.org/ or by phone at 1-800-984-7282.

February 20, 2015
FORT LAUDERDALE, FL: Artists and Patrons of the Arts in Fort Lauderdale and throughout South Florida have a good reason to be excited. This March a new performing arts space will open its doors in the South Andrews corridor of downtown Fort Lauderdale. The venue, The Vanguard, is located at 1501 S. Andrews Avenue in what was formerly a church when the building was first erected in 1939.

Special opening night festivities will take place on March 13th, starting at 7pm, with complimentary ‘Southern fixins’ provided by Tap 42 and other local sponsors, including Croissan’Time, Wine Watch, and Starbucks Coffee. Sculptor Glen Mayo will be displaying a piece entitled “Windows” in the lobby of The Vanguard for the month of March.

The creative team behind The Vanguard has given the space a remodel – with the emphasis on “mod” – because the building’s décor has a definite mid-century flair. The intimate, black box space boasts beautiful, original Dade County pine ceilings that reach 30 feet high. The venue will seat 100 people.

Dubbed a ‘sanctuary for the arts’ – a nod to the building’s history and an indicator of the venue’s mission, The Vanguard will be a creative refuge for artists and arts lovers. Founding Executive Director, Nicole Stodard hopes the unique setting will be a fresh beacon of hope for the arts, particularly theatre, in Broward County:

“For too long Broward has been viewed as the inferior county in between two artistically richer counties, Miami Dade and Palm Beach,” she explains. “I am passionate about helping to change that perception. There is great work being done in our county, and The Vanguard will strive to draw attention to this work by providing it a home.”

The Vanguard will function as a venue as well as a producing entity in its own right. In addition to Vanguard productions, programming will include work by its resident theatre company, Thinking Cap Theatre, along with work by other local and distant theatre practitioners; dance events; film screenings; stand up comedy; art installations; and live music. For more information about The Vanguard, visit www.vanguardarts.org.

Nicole Headshot

Nicole Stodard

The Vanguard has chosen Always Patsy Cline as their inaugural production at The Vanguard. Stodard says the choice was an easy one:

“I grew up listening to my mother and older sister singing Patsy Cline’s songs and came to love her music myself,” she says. “The Vanguard has an air of nostalgia to its atmosphere, so a work that tapped into that nostalgic spirit seemed like a great way to open the venue, not to mention the fact that Cline was a strong woman and a talented artist, and I’m always happy to put talented actresses on stage to tell the stories of other women, real and fictional.”

Ann Marie Olson & Sally Bondi

Ann Marie Olson & Sally Bondi

Always…Patsy Cline is a tribute to the legendary country singer who died tragically at age 30 in a plane crash in 1963. The play is based on a true story about Cline’s friendship with a fan from Houston named Louise Seger, who befriended the star in a Texas honky-tonk in l961, and continued a correspondence with Cline until her death.  The Vanguard’s production will star Ann Marie Olson as Cline, and Sally Bondi as Seger. Stodard will direct the production, and Andy Gilbert will provide musical direction.

Always…Patsy Cline will run from March 13th through March 29th at The Vanguard.  Tickets are $35, and are on sale now. Tickets can be purchased on line at www.vanguardarts.org or by phone at 813-220-1546. Performances are on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 8 pm, and on Sundays at 5 pm. There is an 8 pm performance on Wednesday, March 25. The Vanguard is located at 1501 S. Andrews Avenue in Ft. Lauderdale (33316).

“A touching, life-affirming, deeply emotional drama with a
generous dose of humor.”

BOCA RATON, FL: The Boca Raton Theatre Guild’s production of Tuesdays with Morrie will preview on February 27th, open Saturday night February 28th, and run through March 15th at the Willow Theatre in Boca Raton’s Sugar Sand Park.

Tuesdays with Morrie is columnist Mitch Albom’s moving, inspirational, and often humorous chronicle of the conversations he had with his former professor and mentor Morrie Schwartz. Albom was a successful sports columnist for The Detroit Free Press; after catching Morrie on Nightline, Albom called him and the result was a series of fourteen Tuesdays during which he learned there is more to life than reporting on Wimbledon tournaments and following the tabloids. Throughout their conversations Schwartz, plagued with health complications, never lost his zest for teaching, learning, love, and above all, life.

Albom’s book spent 205 weeks on the New York Times Best Seller list, sold over 14 million copies, has been translated into 41 languages, and became an Emmy-award winning television movie starring Jack Lemon and Hank Azaria. In 2001 Albom collaborated with playwright Jeffrey Hatcher to adapt his work for a very successful Off Broadway production.

“I’m delighted to have to opportunity to direct this piece…” says director Genie Croft. “…To track the evolution of Mitch and Morrie’s relationship as they spend time together and rekindle a bond that turns into one final class – lessons in how to live. Their conversations explore acceptance, communication, love, openness, values, and lasting happiness. Throughout the play, as they continue to meet each Tuesday, Mitch’s character evolves as Morrie’s stories inspire him. Their conversations are supplemented with lectures and life experiences, and interspersed with flashbacks and allusions to contemporary events.”

“I had the pleasure of doing Tuesdays With Morrie five years ago at the Gulfshore Playhouse in Naples,” says actor Wayne LeGette, who is playing Mitch in the BRTG production. “I found Morrie’s compassion and courage to be almost saintly. It’s a story about an incredibly wise man that causes both Mitch and the audience to realize that there is no hurdle insurmountable if you approach it with kindness and always keep looking forward. One day, I can’t wait to play Morrie.”

Howard Elfman, who plays Morrie Schwartz is equally enthusiastic. “When I read Tuesdays with Morrie I knew right then I had to do it,” he says.

Tickets for Tuesdays with Morrie are on sale now and can be purchased by calling 561-347-3948. Performances are on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 8 pm, and Saturday and Sunday at 2 pm. The Willow Theatre is located at 300 S. Military Trail, Boca Raton, 33486 (in the heart of Sugar Sand Park, just south of Palmetto Park Road).

“…Waiting for Waiting for Godot is a perfectly executed trip into
metatheatrical purgatory…” TimeOut New York

February 5, 2015
FT. LAUDERDALE, FL: What better way to inaugurate a brand new theatrical space than with a play that masterfully and humorously takes on a theatrical classic. Thinking Cap Theatre moves into the Vanguard on February 19th with Dave Hanson’s critically acclaimed Waiting for Waiting for Godot. The production will run through March 1st.

Hanson’s comedy about two understudies who are waiting to ‘go on’ in a production of Samuel Beckett’s classic Waiting for Godot – itself a play about two men who wait for a man they’ve never met, who never arrives – is not in any way an adaptation or interpretation of Beckett’s work, but rather a brand new play that examines theatre, acting, and art in a unique, clever, and extremely funny way.

A winner of the Overall Excellence Award for Overall Play at the 2013 New York Fringe Festival, Waiting for Waiting for Godot was described as ‘gleefully absurd’ by TimeOut New York, ‘delectable’ by the New York Times, and ‘damn near perfect’ by Theatre is Easy.

Nicole Stodard

Thinking Cap Theatre’s artistic director Nicole Stodard is directing the production:
“It’s not all that often that you read a script and laugh out loud,” she says “But that was the case with Waiting for Waiting for Godot.  Combine that with its smart, reverential winking at Beckett, one of the greatest experimental authors of all time, and of course the added irony of how long TCT has been ‘waiting’ to go on at The Vanguard, and I knew that the play would be a fun way to kick off TCT’s 5th season.”

The production will star Scott Douglas Wilson, Mark Duncan, and Christina Groom.

Thinking Cap Theatre’s new home, The Vanguard is an intimate, versatile, 99-seat black box performance space located in the heart of downtown Fort Lauderdale.  Formerly a church when first erected in 1939, the freshly remodeled venue will be a modern sanctuary for the arts. Founding Executive Director, Nicole Stodard, and her creative team have given the space a mid-century flair with a mod color palette, Sputnik chandeliers and pop art reminiscent of Warhol adorning the lobby lounge.  However, they have preserved the original 30-feet Dade County pine ceiling in the central room that is now the performance area. The Vanguard will serve as the permanent residence for Thinking Cap Theatre, and as a creative hub to showcase a range of artistic offerings, including the work of other local and visiting theatre companies, stand-up comedy, dance, film screenings, art installations, and live music. The venue’s soft opening will take place the weekend of February 20th; its grand opening will follow in the spring upon completion of the building’s facade by Glavovic Studios, the firm that designed the Young at Art Museum. vanguardarts.org
