Powerful Memories… Powerful Theatre…

The Interview

 “We awakened a lot of memories,” the interviewer tells her subject.
“They were never asleep,” the survivor replies.

The Interview, The Women’s Theatre Project’s second production in their new venue, The Willow Theatre in Sugar Sand Park, will open on January 4th, 2013 and run through January 20th.  The Interview will be The Women’s Theatre Project’s 30th production since they were founded in 2002.

Faye Sholiton’s deeply moving memory play about the legacy of human suffering, courage and humanity, mothers and daughters, and forgiving and being forgiven, The Interview is at once a powerful documentation of a horrific historical event and one artist’s deeply felt response to it. Written with clarity and feeling, it resonates on all levels.

“It is so meaningful to bring this fine piece of theatre to life,” says the Women’s Theatre Project’s Artistic Director and the play’s director, Genie Croft.  “We are all born into some story that affects our emotional, social and spiritual growth,” she continues.  “The Interview explores the case of children of Holocaust survivors – and that can be an enormous legacy, a stifled mystery, or a complex gift and burden.  It’s exciting to focus on the characters’ evolution as they reveal their intense feelings, traumas, and even dark humor, in terms of individual perception, and communication.”

 Harriet Oser will play Bracha Weissman, who has transformed herself into an emotional recluse – her identity defined by the loss of her family in the Nazi death camps she miraculously survived.  Performing The Interview, particularly for the children of Holocaust survivors and sharing their memories was an unforgettable experience for Oser, who is looking forward to revisiting the character, whom she played in The Women’s Theatre Project’s 2009 production of the play.

 

 Patti Gardner will once again take on the role of Ann Meshenberg, who arrives one day to record Bracha’s testimony for a video archive.  Ann, the daughter of Holocaust survivors, has her own agenda: the need to ask a stranger what she could not ask her parents.

Irene Adjan will play Bracha’s daughter Rifka, and Christopher Mitchell will take on the role of videographer Chris MacDonald.

Playwright Faye Sholiton has developed her work in the Cleveland Play House Playwrights’ Unit since 1996 and in Dobama Theatre’s Playwrights’ Gym since 2009. Her full-length works have been read or produced in more than three dozen venues worldwide and have won more than 20 national honors. She is a four-time winner of Individual Excellence Awards from the Ohio Arts Council. Prior to writing plays, she was an award-winning journalist for local, regional and national publications. A teacher of playwriting workshops, most recently she was the Cleveland Play House Artist-in-Residence at Hathaway Brown School in Shaker Heights. She has also taught scene writing to passengers cruising the South Pacific. Professional affiliations include the Dramatists Guild, which she serves as Regional Representative for Ohio; the Association for Jewish Theatre; and the International Centre for Women Playwrights. She is founder of Interplay Jewish Theatre, a company that produces staged readings of Jewish themed works.

The Interview will run from January 4th through January 20th, 2013, with performances on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 8 pm, and on Saturdays and Sundays at 2 p.m.

Emmy Award-winning composer and concert pianist Jace Vek has built a critically acclaimed career combining different styles and genres to create music that ventures far beyond the traditional, yet consistently pleases the ear and the soul.  On January 5th at the Crest Theatre at the Delray Beach Center for the Arts in Old School Square, Vek will continue to stretch the boundaries of his art in a concert he has dubbed The New Standard.

The show, which Vek describes as “instrumental art” will feature a roster of outstanding musicians, all with uniquely different styles of musicianship working together to give birth to Vek’s newest cutting edge creations.

“The music is heavy on melody, and strong in rhythm,” Vek explains.  “It ranges from sublime, dreamy interludes to explosive feats of technical virtuosity. It sounds like a film soundtrack on steroids. It’s a sum of the inspirations from many musical styles including, Electronica, Classical, New Age, Jazz, Film music, Hard Rock, Symphonic, Opera, and Hip hop.”

The New Standard will also showcase the formidable talents of cellist Jonah Kim, electric guitarist Jimi Cokinos, flugelhorn/trumpeter Jeff Oster, bassist Chris Eversoul, and percussionist Drew Tucker.  Soprano Jenene Caramiello and dancer Anita Havel will also perform.

Winner of 2 Emmy awards, with five album releases, Jace Vek’s music is played on hundreds of radio stations world-wide and is featured on XM satellite radio. He is a composer of new music, has worked with with Grammy award winning artists, and specializes in symphonic-electronic fusion. As a virtuoso pianist, Jace Vek has played for US presidents, and performed in many exclusive venues.

Heralded by the New York Times as the next Yo-Yo Ma, 22 year old cellist Jonah Kim has become a star in the world of classical music. He has worked with numerous superstars, including Sting, Andrea Bocelli, Vic Damone, Kenny Rogers, and the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Jonah is a graduate of the Julliard and Curtis schools of music. He is Associate Principal Cellist at the San Francisco Ballet Orchestra, where he is also the orchestra’s youngest member.

With a career in the music business that has taken him to over 50 countries, electric guitarist Jimi Cokinos brings a world of sound and experience to his music. He has had an extensive career in production and has worked closely with Janet Jackson. Destiny’s Child, Fuel, Creed, James Taylor, and other world famous acts.


Jeff Oster’s (flugelhorn, trumpet) most recent album releases, produced by Grammy award winning producer Will Ackerman, have earned him 2 album of the year awards, and international radio airplay, and rave reviews from critics from all over the world.

Over the past 12 months Chris Eversoul (bass guitar) has appeared with the following groups: Apocalyptica, L.A. Guns, Cinderella, and Stryper.  Chris has also worked with Joan Jett, Lita Ford, Dale Stevens, and Patrick Johanson.

Founder of the Tucker Music Academy, which teaches hundreds of students, percussionist Drew Tucker is a leader in community outreach, and a captain of music education.

“What’s as much fun as Christmas?” asks Parade Productions’ director Kim St. Leon. “Directing David Sedaris’ wickedly funny script, The Santaland Diaries, with Michael McKeever!”

The Santaland Diaries will open Parade Productions’ second season on December 13th, and run through December 23rd at the Studio Theatre at Mizner Park in Boca Raton.

The Santaland Diarieshilariouslyrelates David Sedaris’ experiences when he reluctantly worked as an elf in Macy’s Christmastime Santaland display, and offers an uproarious behind-the-scenes look at how department stores manufacture Christmas spirit.

“The play is witty and smart and tells truths about our heart and our callousness, all the while making us laugh,” St. Leon says. “It truly is a celebration of the human spirit covered in holiday commercialism. And Michael McKeever is a dream to direct.”

Parade Productions’ debut season was an unqualified success. Their production of Donald Margulies’ Brooklyn Boy sold out all twelve performances, and a subsequent reading of Stuart Meltzer’s play, Better Than Damn Good, also did very well.

Candace Caplin, the driving force behind Parade Productions, and the company’s executive director, explains:  “The audience loved Michael Mc Keever in Better Than Damn Good – so we decided to bring him back!  It was a great night – there’s nothing like a group of people coming together and laughing.  We’re excited about SantaLand; you take David Sedaris, and mix in Michael Mc Keever, and you end up with something special.  It should be a lot of fun.”

McKeever is pleased to have the opportunity to revisit Sedaris’ (s)elf. “There’s a reason this play is one of the most produced every year,” he says.  “It’s not only full of sardonic wit and humor, but incredibly insightful as well.”

The versatile McKeever, who recently won a Carbonell Award for Best New Work for his play, Stuff, explores every aspect of the human condition in his work, which incorporates a wide variety of styles and subject matter.  He has been honored with an NEA Residency Grant (New Theatre, Miami) and has been a 3-time finalist for Humana Fest’s nationally renowned Heideman Award. He is the proud recipient of three Carbonell Awards; four Curtain Up Awards; and two Florida Individual Artist Fellowships. Six of his plays have been produced at City Theatre’s prestigious Summer Shorts Festival in Miami. He has been a finalist several times at both the Key West Theatre Festival and the Sarasota Festival of New Plays. He is also an award-winning actor and designer. He resides in South Florida and is a member of the Dramatists Guild and Actors’ Equity.

Humorist, comedian, author, and radio contributor David Sedaris has been described as ‘the rock star of writers’.  He first gained public attention when National Public Radio broadcast his essay ‘Santaland Diaries’ in 1992.  Much of Sedaris’ humor is autobiographical and self-deprecating, and often concerns his family life, his middle-class upbringing, his Greek heritage, unusual jobs, education, drug use, obsessive behaviors, and his life in general. Sedaris has been compared to James Thurber, Dorothy Parker, Spalding Gray, Mark Twain, and Nathanial West and was hailed by the New Yorker as one of the funniest writers in America.  His books and essays have sold well over seven million copies.

Who said crime doesn’t pay!?

The Women’s Theatre Project will present Barbara Pease Weber’s contemporary comedy, Delval Divas, at the Willow Theatre in Sugar Sand Park from November 2nd through November 18th.  This will be the theatre company’s first production in their new venue.

Sally Bondi, Lisa Braun, Lela Elam, Jacqueline Laggy, Jessica K. Peterson, and Karen Stephens star in the timely comedy about six capable and intelligent women who just happen to be in prison and find themselves facing a series of challenges – including changes in lifestyle, corruption, and murder.

“I began to write Delval Divas in 2000 and, thinking back, it’s almost like I had a crystal ball into the future,” says playwright Barbara Pease Weber. “Since I was, at the time, an actor in my 40s, I decided that I wanted to try to write a comedy involving strong, educated and bright middle aged women.  I considered an office setting then decided it would be boring.  Thought about a gym setting.  Nah, boring!  Then I asked myself, where would a group of well educated, successful and intelligent women find themselves together?  A-ha!  In the slammer for their various and sundry corporate misdeeds.  Hence, Delval Divas was born in my head.”

Weber’s timing couldn’t have been better: “Little did I know at the time I began to write my story that the Enron and Martha Stewart scandals were about to explode,” she says,  “And that later in the decade, scandals involving Bernie Madoff, Country Wide Financial, Fannie Mae and Wall Street in general would keep Delval Divas a timely piece.”

Director Genie Croft is in charge of the Divas:  “Rehearsing Delval Divas is a creative and imaginative journey as we delve through the process of unraveling the upheavals these characters are trying to manipulate to their personal advantage,” she explains. “Working through the fabric of this clever script has been very rewarding. I’m delighted with the nuanced development of these Divas by my very talented cast. So far I have not had to sentence anyone to solitary confinement!”

Delval Divas will run from November 2nd through November 18th, with performances on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 8 pm, and on Saturdays and Sundays at 2 p.m.

to create a unique theatrical experience

Miami, Florida October 5, 2012:
Professor Edward Rozinsky and pantomime artist Nina Hlava will present the world premier of their unique creative collaboration The pleasure is… all Mime October 11th through 14th at the Colony Theatre in Miami Beach.

A pantomime in two acts, The pleasure is… all Mime is a clever send-up of pop culture expressed in a series of plays, vignettes, and sketches.  Topics as familiar, yet diverse as pop stardom, public education, reality television, loneliness, drug use, are united in the art ‘silent action’.  Graphic animation, music, dance, acrobatics, puppetry, and juggling are also incorporated into Hlava’s two-hour performance.

A graduate of the prestigious Leningrad Institute of Theatre, Music and Cinematography, stage director, dramatist, educator, actor and mime artist Edward Rozinsky has been performing professionally since the age of 12.   Rozinsky’s extensive research in the area of Stage Movement and Mime resulted in a series of articles, a book, “The Silent Art” published in Leningrad, USSR, and a recently published textbook “Essential Stage Movement.” He has produced a video instruction program in stage movement that is offered via the Internet as a full 30 lesson course for actors (www.stagemovement.com).  His new textbook, “Essential Stage Fencing” is about to be published.  A resident of South Florida since 1983, Mr. Rozinsky was a Founder and Artistic Director of the Chamber Theatre, a professional theatre for children in Coral Gables.  He has also taught at the University of Miami, FIU, and Barry University, and is currently teaching at The New World School of the Arts in Miami.  Several of Professor Rozinsky’s former students now perform as clowns in Cirque du Soleil, and his apprentice Slava Polunin is a star of the  internationally acclaimed “Slava’s SnowShow.”

Nina Hlava is equally versed in pantomime, comedy theater, clowning, vaudeville, grotesque and tap dance. She holds a Ph.D. in non-verbal theater from the Academy of Performing Arts (HAMU) in Prague, Czech Republic. Nina has been a member of the “Bühne Heidenreichstein” theater group (Austria) since she was five years old. She studied under the National Theater Association in Austria, as well as at the Scuola Teatro Dimitri (Switzerland), and Atellier de Belleville (France). Ms. Hlava’s goal is to keep pantomime and physical comedy alive and to pass on the art of solo performance in the traditions of her teachers: clown and mime professor Boris Hybner; mime Martin Sochor; mime Ivan Bacciocchi; clown Stevo Capko; tap dancer Petr Zamostny; tap and jazz dancer Katherine Kramer; and, most recently, stage movement professor, mime and director Edward Rozinsky.  For more information about Nina Hlava, please visit http://www.linkedin.com/pub/nina-hlava/1b/440/12.

Halloween is just around the corner, and who better to celebrate with than the denizens of Dr. Frank N. Furter’s home-sweet-castle in Richard O’Brien’s beloved cult classic, The Rocky Horror Show.   And Entr’Acte Theatrix is inviting audiences to come do the Time Warp again… when they present ‘Rocky’ at the Crest Theatre at the Delray Center for the Arts at Old School Square from October 25th through November 4th.

The Rocky Horror Show is an outrageous assemblage of the most stereotypical science fiction movies, Marvel comics, Frankie Avalon/Annette Funicello outings and rock ‘n’ roll of every vintage. The play (upon which the classic film The Rocky Horror Picture Show is based) has grown from an experimental production originally produced in a small London theatre in June 1973, to a cult phenomenon with fans world-wide.

Rocky is also the quintessential audience participation show, and Entr’Acte will have what have come to be known as  ‘survival kits’ available for purchase for those who want them.

Rocky ‘virgins’ and Rocky veterans alike will delight in Entr’Acte’s production, which features a talented young cast led by well known South Florida director Kevin Black, who is thrilled to be involved with the show: “As a teenager, I was completely obsessed with Rocky Horror,” he says. “And I’m so excited to finally get the chance to direct the stage version with this amazing cast. We’ve decided to put a fresh new twist on this cult classic, propelling this outrageous and campy piece into the next millennium.”

Among the cast are:

Ross Parris (Dr. Frank N. Furter) was most recently seen as James in Entr’Acte’s 2012 summer production of Jesus Christ Superstar.  His previous theater credits include Oklahoma!, Guys and Dolls, and Annie at the Lakeworth Playhouse, and The Pajama Game with the Island Players in Palm Beach.

Elaine Flores (Janet) is a recent graduate in Musical Theater from the New World School of the Arts in Miami, and a Miami native. She has played Wendla in Spring Awakening (The Colony Theatre), Janet in the Drowsy Chaperone (Louise O. Gerrits Theatre), and Marcy Park in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (New World School of the Arts Studio Theatre). Elaine has also studied at the American Theatre Wing in NYC and appeared in the Major Motion Picture Rock of Ages.
Juan Gonzalez Machain (Brad) studied Vocal Performance and Musical Theatre at the University of Miami and was most recently seen as Peter in Entr’acte’s summer production of Jesus Christ Superstar. Other credits include Jesus in Entr’acte’s Godspell , Matt in The Fantasticks (The Lyric Theatre) Kenny in Edith Can Shoot Things and Hit Them (New Theatre in Miami) and Van in Dog Sees God (University of Miami). Juan has also toured Latin America for six months with the Argentinean Educational Theater Company ARTSPOT.
Entr’acte Theatrix, is a not-for-profit, semi-professional, showcase company for young actors, providing performance opportunities for emerging theatre artists.  An off-shoot of the Palm Beach Principal Players, a twelve-year-old acting company for theater students of high school and college age, Entr’acte, as the name suggests, is the “next step,” from classroom to career, and provides the young actor his or her first professional, all-important, resume-building credit.

Who ever said that crime doesn’t pay!?

The Women’s Theatre Project will present Barbara Pease Weber’s contemporary comedy Delval Divas at the Willow Theatre in Sugar Sand Park from November 2nd through November 18th.  This will be the theatre company’s first production in their new venue.

“I’m delighted to open our season in our new home with this comedy exploring the devious techniques all the characters employ to manipulate their lives behind bars, as major upheavals threaten to turn them into “real criminals,” says the play’s director and The Women’s Theatre Project’s artistic director, Genie Croft.

“Delval Divas invites us into the posh and extravagant world of a tightly knit group of fortunate felons,” Croft explains. “This is an extremely funny peek into a prison comedy where four very clever con artists (all white collar female prisoners – doctor, technology wizard, lawyer, Wall Street stockbroker) have used their various talents and skills to turn their prison into a luxurious resort hotel.”

Six of South Florida’s most talented and popular actresses will inhabit the cellblock at the Delaware Valley Federal Correctional Facility:  Sally Bondi, Lisa Braun, Jacqueline Laggy, Jessica K. Peterson, and Karen Stephens have been cast as the ‘pink collar’ criminals and Lela Elam will play their ‘own’ special guard, Lucille.

“Though I’m “not guilty”, if I have to spend time, there’s no other place I’d rather be then with my fellow Delval Divas at The Women’s Theatre Project!” Says Sally Bondi, who will play ‘Rosemary Adams, Esq’ (convicted lawyer and skimmer of reallocated mortgage funds).  “First production in the new space – first time in the big house – coincidence? I think not!!!”

Lisa Braun, who will portray ‘Sharon Watson’ (arrested and charged with killing her first husband’s third wife) agrees.  “I’m honored to be in my first show with TWTP (in a NON-musical, another first!), and I’m inspired by all the talented Divas who are providing such amazing tutelage in the art of incarceration on stage.”

Delval Divas will run from November 2nd through November 18th, with performances on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 8 pm, and on Saturdays and Sundays at 2 p.m.

The Willow Theatre at Sugar Sand Park is located at 300 South Military Trail in Boca Raton, just south of Palmetto Park Road. The Boca Raton Branch of The National League of American Pen Women (NLAPW) has a busy season ahead.  The League’s Membership Tea will take place on Thursday, October 18th at the TeaLicious Tea Room in Delray Beach; The Student League Membership Committee will host a Discussion Group on Saturday, November 10th at the Glades Road Branch of the Palm Beach County Public Library; and on Saturday, February 2nd, 2013, the League will host an Art, Book, and Music Fair at the South Civic Center on Jog Road in Delray Beach.

The National League of American Pen Women was founded in 1897 by Washington D.C./Boston journalist Marian Longfellow O’Donoghue.  She invited fellow journalists Margaret Sullivan Burke and Anna Sanborn Hamilton to join her in establishing a “progressive press union” for the female writers of Washington.  Those three women, often referred to as ‘The Dauntless Three’, eventually brought together seventeen women: writers, novelists, newspaper women, a teacher, a poet and an artist. They hoped that these “active pen women” would find in the group, “mutual aid, advice, and future development” for each other and their careers (a quote from the League Minutes of 26 June 1897).  Professional credentials were required for membership and the group determined that Pen Women should always be paid for their work. Artists and composers were welcomed by their literary sisters, and by September of 1898, the League boasted over fifty members “from Maine to Texas, from New York to California.” Current honorary members include Jan McArt, Hillary Rodham Clinton, Julie Harris, and Edna Hibel.

The 37 year old Boca Raton Branch (www.bocapenwomen.org) of the League is largest in Florida, and one of the largest in the nation.

Membership Tea:  Anyone is welcome to attend the League’s annual membership tea, to be held at the TeaLicous Tea Room in Delray Beach on October 18th.  Memberships (as a professional or as a patron) will be available at the event, as well as information about the League, its members, its projects, its upcoming meetings, and its history.

Student League Membership Committee: The Boca Raton Branch of the NLAPW, in conjunction with the League’s national organization, has launched a Student League membership level as a way to open the organization to qualified young women.  The objective is to recruit college women in letters, art, composition, and music (and high school women taking courses in the arts on a college campus) to the organization, in order to offer them mentorship and support in their chosen fields.  The discussion group, which will meet on Saturday, November 10th at the Glades Road Branch of the Palm Beach Public Library, is open to the public.

Art/Book/Music Fair : On Saturday, February 2, 2013 from 11:00am to 4:00pm the National League of American Pen Women will host an Art/Book/Music Fair, showcasing the work of their members, as well as other local artists and creatives.   There will be 40 vendors, with original books, paintings, photography, crafts, CD’s, etc.  This event will be held at the South Civic Center on Jog Road, and will be open to the public.  Admission to the Fair is $2; students with ID will be admitted free of charge.

Jazz artist Paulette Dozier has two major events on her calendar for September:  She will open the Miami Beach Stage Door Theatre’s 2012-2013 season with an encore performance of Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill, and she will celebrate the release her third CD, In Walked You, with a concert at Arts Garage in Delray Beach.

Dozier’s performance as Billie Holiday in playwright Lanie Robertson’s portrait of the legendary jazz singer just four months before her death earned glowing reviews and played to sold out houses at the Boca Raton Theatre Guild in April, and more recently at the Broward Stage Door Theatre in Coral Springs.   The production will run for four performances only – September 21st -23rd at the Byron Carlyle Theatre in Miami.  Now in its second year, the Miami Beach Stage Door is the resident theatre company at the historic Byron Carlyle Theatre.

In Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill the iconic jazz singer reflects upon her life, loves, tragedies, and triumphs in a powerful monologue interspersed with music from her timeless songbook.

Arts Garage in Delray Beach has quickly become one of South Florida’s top spots for jazz – and as such is the perfect venue to host an introductory concert celebrating the South Florida release of Paulette Dozier’s newest project – her third CD, In Walked You.   As in her previous albums, In Walked You highlights a number of unforgettable compositions from the jazz canon, and features an original composition – the title track Dozier penned with longtime collaborator Mike Levine.
