MARGATE, FL: 1962 at the world famous Apollo Theatre in New York City. It’s a time in American musical history when a new sound is percolating. The Dreamettes, a trio of aspiring R & B singers, arrive late for a talent contest they hope will launch their musical career. Dreamgirls, the award-winning Broadway hit (6 Tony Awards, 5 Drama Desk Awards, 2 Grammy Awards), opening at Broward Stage Door Theatre on November 3rd, is the story of these three women – on stage and off.

“Even though Dreamgirls opened in 1981, and takes place in the 60’s and 70’s, the show’s message is just as relevant today,” he explains. “And we are really striving to relate this story to today’s challenges: the struggle for minorities; the drive to be famous; the cost of success and what that can do to an individual – and to their family.
“We have an amazing cast of 18,” Black continues. “Sarah Gracel is playing the lead role of Effie. Elijah Word is James ‘Thunder’ Early, and Don Seward will play Curtis Taylor, Jr.”
Also cast are Charisse Shields, Sheena O. Murray, Cherise James, Andre Russell, James White, Joshua Conner, Sandi Stock, Natalie McPherson, Patrick Kolta, Richard Forbes, Alexander Domingue, Jabriel Shelton, Brettnie Black, Stephon Duncan, and Daryl Patrice.

Stage Door Theatre presents Kevin Black’s Swing! Swing! Swing! June 16 – July 30
“It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that swing!” Duke Ellington
“From the opening drum riffs, rippling bass and piano fanfare, you are put on notice: This show is going to … blow out the roof.” Bill Hirschman – FloridaTheaterOnStage.com
June 1, 2017
MARGATE, FL: Last fall Stage Door Theatre’s Theatre 2 jumped and jived with Kevin Black’s exuberant production of Swing! Swing! Swing! The Carbonell Recommended musical revue was so popular with Stage Door audiences, that the theatre’s Executive Producer Dee Wilson-Bunn decided it would be the perfect vehicle to ‘jazz up’ Stage Door’s 2017 summer season. Swing! Swing! Swing! will open once again on June 16th in the ever-popular venue’s Theatre 2, and run through July 30th.
Kevin Black
“Swing music has its roots in Jazz, beginning in New Orleans and Kansas City then eventually moving its way across the nation.” Black explained last October. “Once it reached New York City, the phenomenon quickly became the pop music of its day. Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller took the jazz infused sounds of George Gershwin and Louis Armstrong and invented a genre that featured a strong drum and bass line, creating that unmistakable rhythm that lead to the high energy dance styles of the jitterbug and the jive.
“Swing! Swing! Swing! pays tribute to these Jazz and Swing classics, told through various thematic groupings of songs and artists,” he continued. “That Big Band sound, normally created by a 20 plus piece swing band, will be reimagined by utilizing live piano, bass and drums, while incorporating the cast as the brass section through rhythmic vocals and harmonized scatting. The show is set in an Art Deco style club, masterfully envisioned by Michael McClain. We are certain the more senior patrons of Stage Door will thoroughly enjoy reliving these timeless classics. Our hope is to bring this magnificent musical style to a new generation of audiences.”
Just a few of the classic pieces that will be revisited include ‘Tuxedo Junction’,’In the Mood’, ‘Stardust’, ‘Stormy Weather’, ‘I Got Rhythm’, and of course ‘It Don’t Mean a Thing.’

Stage Door Theatre
presents EVITA March 18 – April 24
“Don’t Cry For Me Argentina The Truth Is I Never Left You” -Eva Perón – Evita
March 8, 2016
MARGATE, FL: Stage Door Theatre’s production of the multi-award winning Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice musical Evita will open on March 18th and run through April 24th.
Based on the life of Argentine political leader Eva Perón, who became the spiritual leader of the nation, Evita traces this charismatic woman’s rise from obscurity to fame and fortune as one of the most influential political leaders in the country’s history.
The idea for the show began as a result of a visit to Argentina by lyricist Tim Rice, and a subsequent reunion and collaboration with composer Andrew Lloyd Webber – their first since the release of their double album Jesus Christ Superstar in 1970. Like Superstar, Evita began as a rock opera concept album. And like its predecessor, the album produced a smash it single, ‘Don’t Cry for Me, Argentina’, which, much to Rice’s delight would have people “walking into the theatre whistling the tune,” when the album went on to become a full length production – first in London’s West End, where it won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Musical, and then on Broadway, where it became the first British musical to win the Tony Award for Best Musical.
Michael Leeds
Evita will be directed by Michael Leeds. Kevin Black will choreograph the production, and Caryl Fantel is the show’s Musical Director.
“Since the first production in 1978, Evita has had over a thousand productions all over the world,” says Leeds. “Kevin and I were attracted to this story of a woman who journeys from being an illegitimate, poverty-stricken child in the pampas of Argentina to become the most powerful woman in the world. This musical is all about passion. It fuels every scene and every relationship. We watch the cat and mouse foreplay between Evita and Juan Perón, their rise to power and their manipulation of an adoring public, all seen through the cynical eyes of an impassioned Che Guevara.
Kevin Black
“Because the tango is such an integral element to that world, Kevin and I have set theentire show in a tango bar,” Leeds explains. “Kevin hired an extraordinary couple who specializes in the tango and they lead us through the story in dance just as Che does through song. It’s a potent combination.
“We needed a really talented cast of singers to do justice to Andrew Lloyd Weber’s music, he continues. “We were lucky to find our fourteen-member ensemble from South Florida’s talented pool of singer/dancers. We found our Evita (Jenna Pastuszek) in New York, our Che (Trevor Whitaker) in Great Britain, and our Perón is the talented Rick Hvizdak who we just worked with in Promises, Promises. It’s an exciting production to create and I’m sure it will be just as exciting to watch!”
Caryl Fantel
Caryl Fantel, the shows musical director is equally enthusiastic. “What an epic piece of theatre!” she says. “I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to be part of Stage Door’s production of Evita. This musical tells the powerful story of Eva Perón almost entirely through music that is alternately sweeping and raw, and filled with emotion. Devotees of composer Andrew Lloyd Webber may catch hints of the master’s other works, including Jesus Christ Superstar and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat in this music. For our production, we have assembled an impressive group of actor/singer/dancers who share this true-life tale of ambition and political seduction that is timeless and certainly relevant today.”
Evita will run from March 18 – April 24 at The Broward Stage Door Theatre in Coral Springs. The theatre is located at 8036 Sample Road, in Margate.
Tickets for Evita are $38 – $42; $16 student tickets are also available. Tickets may be purchased at the Broward Stage Door Theatre box office at 954-344-7765 or on line at www.stagedoortheatre.com.

Kevin Black Productions
presents Ballroom: South Beach Style January 9-11
Straight from the streets of Miami comes the hottest party in town!
December, 23, 2014: BOCA RATON, FL: The Willow Theatre in Sugar Sand Park will resonate with the sounds of music in January. No… not ‘those’ sounds of music, but sounds unique to South Florida… fast paced, exciting, and exotic.
Renowned producer/director/choreographer Kevin Black’s Ballroom: South Beach Style will run at the Willow for four performances only, from January 9th through January 11th. Stylish and sexy, full of the Miami beat and heat, the show features intricate ballroom dancing, along with Salsa, Merengue, Rhumba, Mambo, and Jive, all accompanied by carefully selected popular music appropriate to each style and era.
Beginning 1940s, the heyday of South Beach night life when stars like Frank, Dean, and Sammy graced the stages of large showrooms at The Fontainebleau Hotel and other popular tourist attractions, Ballroom: South Beach Style progresses chronologically, featuring music by Elvis Presley, The Beatles, KC and The Sunshine Band, Madonna, Phil Collins, Gloria Estefan, and Santana. Evoking the sounds of Miami Vice, Whitney Houston (who filmed The Bodyguard at The Fountainebleau), Celia Cruz, Gloria Estefan, Ricky Martin, into the 90s when Latin music crossed over to the pop chart, led by The Miami Sound Machine – the entire production is rooted in South Beach and Miami.
Singers Mimi J. and Shelley Keelor, and dancers Rome Saladino and Marina Putane, along with Teddy Talbot, Luke Stockton, Kelly Pryor, Jenny Hegarty, Andreas Lutzner, and Craig Strang are slated to participate in the production.
Ballroom: South Beach Style has toured and thrilled audiences throughout the United States for the past three years. These four performances are the show’s first at the Willow – invited there because of its well known artistry and popularity.
“Audiences love this show,” says producer/choreographer Black. “With the continued popularity of Dancing with the Stars and So You Think You Can Dance, more and more people are aware of how difficult, yet how very entertaining this kind of production is. Our cast is immensely talented, the music is amazing, and our costumes are gorgeous,” he continues. “We’ve had nothing but the most positive feedback and reviews since we began.” Kevin Black is the owner and artistic director of Kevin Black Productions. His expertise, experience, and creativity in directing and choreography, as well as in set, costume, and lighting design have built him a solid reputation as one of the top ‘go-to guys’ in South Florida. Kevin’s most recent work includes 8 Track, I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change, and Rags at The Plaza Theatre in Manalapan. He directed and choreographed Spamalot, Tommy, and The Rocky Horror Show for Entr’Acte Theatrix performing at The Crest Theatre in Delray Beach. Kevin has also produced South Florida tours of La Cage Aux Folles, The Jazz Singer, Smokey Joe’s Café, Funny Girl, Victor/Victoria, Cabaret, and Dreamgirls. And his recent creations for Stage Door Theatre, On the Radio, starring Ballroom’s Mimi J. and What’s New Pussycat? The Soundtrack of an Era, were extremely successful and well reviewed. Kevin’s work can currently be seen at the Villa de Palmar Resorts in Cabo, Mexico; Kevin is also the Artistic Director for CAST (Career in the Arts, School of Talent) located in Cooper City, Florida.
Mimi J. was born and raised in Miami. She is a professional singer currently performing in the South Florida tri-county area, and has been the recipient of numerous awards in vocal performance. She received her degrees in Musical Theater from the University of Central Florida Conservatory Theater in Orlando, where she attended on the Walt Disney Scholarship. Some of her regional theatre and Broadway National and International Tour credits include Ain’t Misbehavin’, Smokey Joe’s Café, Fame, Nunsense, and Rent. Mimi was the first woman of color to play Teen Angel in the classic 70’s hit, Grease during the show’s Pan-Asian tour. She recently starred in On the Radio at the Broward Stage Door Theatre.
Rome Saladino has performed with a number of prestigious companies including the Sacramento Ballet, Icelandic Ballet and American Ballet Theatre. He has worked with Mikhail Baryshnikov, Fernando Bujones, Jürgen Schneider, Alonzo King, Jon Engstrom, Ann Reinking, and Sonja Haney (Bob Fosse’s Assistant).
Marina Putane trained as a rhythmic gymnast; she was a member of the Latvian National Team, which competed in many cities all over the former USSR. Her dancing career began as a show ballet dancer with Latvian magician, Palchevsky, at the National Latvian Opera House. The Boca Raton Theatre Guild
presents Everyday Rapture The Broadway and Off-Broadway hit comes to Boca Raton!
“It easily qualifies as one of the year’s most extravagantly
entertaining new musicals…” Ben Brantley ~ The New York Times
October, 2014 – Boca Raton, FL: The Boca Raton Theatre Guild was looking for something unique as a follow-up to the company’s recent successful productions of Pippin and Chicago: “Something modern – with music that would appeal to all generations,” says producer Keith Garsson. “And when Everyday Rapture opened on Broadway in 2010 to outstanding reviews and sold-out performances it just stuck in my mind. It’s funny, timely and unlike anything you’ve seen before.” Everyday Rapture will have its South Florida premiere when it previews at the Willow Theatre in Sugar Sand Park on November 7th and opens the following night. It will run through November 23rd.
The show, which has been called a ‘stage memoir disguised as fiction’, tells the story of a young woman’s psycho-spiritual-sexual journey down the rocky path that separates her mostly Mennonite past from her mostly Manhattan future – from the cornfields of Kansas to the clover fields of New York (with a disturbing detour through YouTube!). Everyday Rapture entwines spirituality and show biz. It follows a young woman as she grows from a Mennonite to a Manhattanite, with many psychological and spiritual challenges on the way. Gay men, Judy Garland and two preachers named Fred all form major parts of the tapestry woven into the play. Everyday Rapture features songs by numerous singers and songwriters including Johnny Mercer, David Byrne, George Harrison, Roberta Flack, Judy Garland, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, and even Mr. Rogers.
“I’m delighted to be directing the Southeast premiere of this unique musical story,” says Genie Croft. “The lead character is an outsider from Topeka – raised as a Mennonite – who follows her dreams to New York, and creates a career as a Broadway actress. The emotional, humorous, and spiritual arc of the musical is an exciting contrast of two journeys of discovery that cleverly show how divided personalities can lead to some of the most fascinating people out there.”
Musical director Caryl Fantel, who has credits from Off-Broadway to regional theatres and concert halls throughout South Florida and around the United States is equally enthusiastic about the production:
“I’m excited to work on it because there’s truly something for everyone, running the gamut of musical styles from standards to musical theatre, funk, and rock. We have a top-notch ensemble of vocalists and a rocking band in place,” she continues, “And I can’t wait to share this unique and entertaining piece of theatre.”
Says lead actress Jodie Langel: “The heart of this show lies in the story of this incredible girl, her desire to be spiritually and morally correct – while dreaming of Broadway, and to do what she loves most – be center stage singing her heart out.”
Joining Langel on the Willow stage will be Ann Marie Olson, Leah Sessa, and Ben Solmor (who is also serving as the show’s choreographer.)
Tickets for Everyday Rapture are on sale now and can be purchased by calling 561-347-3948. Performances are on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 8 pm, and Saturday and Sunday at 2 pm. Tickets are on sale now, and may be purchased at the Willow Theatre Box Office at 561-347-3948. The Willow Theatre is located at 300 S.
