LAUDERHILL, FL:    Mel Brooks’ musical comedy The Producers won a record-setting 12 Tonys in 2001, including Best Musical – the most in the awards’ history.  It also set the standard for outrageous, in-your-face, politically incorrect humor. Stage Door Theatre will present what Variety’s Charles Isherwood called ‘a rip-roaring, gut-busting, rib-tickling, knee-slapping, aisle-rolling … good time’ musical at the Lauderhill Performing Arts Center (LPAC). The show will open on January 18th and run through February 10th.

The plot is simple: Failed producer Max Bialystock and his reluctant accountant, Leo Bloom, cook up a plot to convince a group of elderly women to invest two million dollars in a horrendously offensive Third Reich-themed musical, which they know will be a sure-fire flop. This, they conclude, will leave them with the money, which they plan to use to retire to Rio.  But against all odds show is a hit, and Bialystock and Bloom have to deal with their success.

“The Producers takes an absurd and politically incorrect look at a horrible time in history. It also takes a hysterical look at the “art of the deal” in theatre itself,” the show’s director, Clayton Phillips says.  “These days I feel we just have to laugh, or we just might go crazy.  The Producers will make you laugh, for sure.  Laugh at the absurdities of life.” 

“This is a bucket list role for me,” says South Florida’s Ken Clement, who will play Max Bialystock in the production. “When Clayton offered me the role, I didn’t hesitate for even one moment… I said ‘yes’ without a second thought!”

Phillips has also cast T.J. Lamando as Leo Bloom, Melissa Jones as Ulla, Larry Buzzeo as Roger de Bris, and Frank Vomero as Garmen Ghia. Other cast members include Michael Biggs, Allison Blanchard, Marty Craft, Versee Damien, Alexandra Nicole Garcia, Luis Gomez, Stephen Hohendorf, Caiti Marlow, Christopher Morucci, Cat Pagano, Vincent Pelligrino, Jacob Rice, Sarah Ros, Laura Titus, Dyllan Vallier, Alexandra Van Hasselt, and Shanna Woods.

David Nagy will serve as the production’s Musical Director and Danny Durr is The Producers’ Choreographer. Scenic Design is by Randall Parsons, Lighting Design is by Guy Haubrich, and Costume Design is by Lenora Nikitin.  The production’s Stage Manager is Nancy Clay.

The Producers will run from January 18 – February 10 at the Lauderhill Performing Arts Center (LPAC). The theatre is located at 3800 NW 11th Place, Lauderhill (33311), in the Central Broward Regional Park on the North East corner of Sunrise Boulevard and 441 (State Road 7).

Playwright Ken Ludwig’s madcap comedy Moon Over Buffalo will open on August 30th and run through October 6th at the The Broward Stage Door Theatre in Coral Springs.

Ken Ludwig is an internationally-acclaimed playwright whose work has been performed in at least 30 countries in over 20 languages. He has had 6 shows produced on Broadway and 6 in London’s West End. He has won two Laurence Olivier Awards, three Tony Award ken_ludwig_photo_2010nominations, two Helen Hayes Awards, the Edgar Award, the SETC Distinguished Career Award, and the Edwin Forrest Award for Services to the Theatre. His plays have been commissioned by the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Bristol Old Vic. His best known plays and musicals include Lend Me A Tenor, Crazy For You, Moon Over Buffalo, Leading Ladies, Twentieth Century, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, The Game’s Afoot, The Fox on the Fairway, Midsummer/Jersey, The Three Musketeers, Treasure Island and The Beaux’ Stratagem. The Schwartz family is on its last legs. Their father is dead and their Catskills home is going up for sale. Norma Schwartz’ husband hasn’t spoken to her since she turned their 15 year old son in for smoking pot; it doesn’t seem like brother Herb’s wife will ever present him with an heir; middle sibling Simon has one foot on the moon; and youngest brother Gene arrives at the family compound with an unexpected guest. What unfolds is the funny, surprising, and ultimately moving story of a family at a key moment in their history.

Parade Productions will present Deborah Zoe Laufer’s The Last Schwartz from January 31st through February 23rd at the Mizner Park Cultural Arts Center’s Studio Theatre.  The play received unanimously glowing reviews when it debuted at Florida Stage in 2002.

Director Kim St. Leon was immediately drawn to the piece. “We see a family’s history and future collide on one fateful weekend,” she says. “While we need to understand where we come from, we can’t let it hinder where we’re going.  In The Last Schwartz some hold on to the past too tightly while others let go of it too freely. The machinations of families have always fascinated me and The Last Schwartz does that with laughter, charm, and poignancy.”

Ken Clement and Betsy Graver have already committed to the project, and casting for the rest of the roles is underway.

“I’m very excited that we’re doing The Last Schwartz,” says Parade Productions Executive Producer Candace Caplin. “It’s one of my all-time favorite plays.  It has everything; it’s funny, it’s touching, it’s full of surprises; its characters are people we all know and deal with. It’s been top of my list for years.”

Playwright Deborah Zoe Laufer is a recipient of the Helen Merrill Playwriting Award and a Lilly Award. She is a graduate of The Juilliard School and a two-time recipient of the LeCompte du Nouy grant from The Lincoln Center Foundation. Her plays have been developed at Florida Stage, The Eugene O’Neill Playwrights Conference, Williamstown Theatre Festival, The Ojai Playwrights Conference, The Missoula Colony, The Cherry Lane Alternative, The Dramatists Guild Fellowship Program, New Georges, The Lark Play Development Center, and Geva Theatre Center. She has received a National New Play Network rolling premiere and commission.  She is a member of the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop as a lyricist and librettist.

Parade Productions is a not-for profit theatre company whose mission is “To produce high quality theatre experiences that entertain, enlighten, inform, uplift, and inspire audiences, sending them home with new thoughts, insights, questions, and ideas.”

The Last Schwartz will have one preview performance on January 30th, 2014.  It will open on January 31st, and will run through February 23rd, with performances Thursday through Saturday evenings at 7:30 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays at 3 p.m. Ticket prices are $35 ($30 for groups of 20 or more).

Add sex and sparkle to a combustible mixture of murder, greed, corruption, and betrayal, blend with music and lyrics by the incomparable John Kander and Fred Ebb, stir in the unmistakable look of Bob Fosse’s choreography, combine with an incredibly talented cast of actors – and the result is the Boca Raton Theatre Guild’s upcoming production of Chicago.

Chicago will open on March 1st and run through March 17th at the Willow Theatre in Sugar Sand Park in Boca Raton.

In Chicago, John Kander, Fred Ebb, and Bob Fosse created a work that flawlessly evokes its vaudeville setting.  Flamboyant flappers, crooked lawyers, and merry murderesses are all part of a sparkling script and a classic score that includes “All That Jazz,” “Cell Block Tango” and “Razzle Dazzle.”

BRTG producer/director Keith Garsson has assembled a stellar cast to bring some of Broadway’s most beloved and well known characters to life: Avi Hoffman (Billy Flynn), Patti Gardner (Roxie Hart), Krisha Marcano (Velma Kelly), Sally Bondi (Matron Mama Morton), Ken Clement (Amos Hart), and Matthew Korinko (The Announcer) are all on board and looking forward to playing in this classic tale of “…violence, envy, exploitation, adultery and treachery—all those things we hold near and dear to our hearts!”

Hap Erstein (Palm Beach Post/PalmBeachArtsPaper.com) listed the Boca Raton Theatre Guild’s recent production of A.R. Gurney’s Sylvia as one of his 2012 ‘10 Favorites of the Year’, and Chicago promises to continue to enhance the Guild’s reputation as one of South Florida’s up and coming professional theatre companies.

“This company – and this production – is going to feature the best of the best,” Garsson says.  “Just getting the cast together has been a dream, and working with them is proving to be all I could have hoped for… and more.”

Garsson’s Velma Kelly, Krisha Marcano, originated the role of ‘Squeak’ in the Broadway production of The Color Purple.  Marcano’s impressive background includes stints with the Martha Graham Dance Company and the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, and roles in Fosse, Disney’s Aida, Sweet Charity, Smokey Joe’s Cafe, and the film Preacher’s Kid.  She holds a BFA from SUNY Purchase and is the co-chair of the business group at Career Transitions for Dancers and the founder of KM Studios.

Avi Hoffman’s recent performances in LUV at the Plaza Theatre, and Parade Productions’ Brooklyn Boy earned him critical praise, and his turn as Wilbur Turnblad in Actor’s Playhouse’ 2012 production of Hairspray earned him a Carbonell Award. Hoffman is also known for his award winning one man shows Too Jewish? and Too Jewish, Too! (Performer of the Year ’95 – NY Press Magazine; L.A. OVATION award – Best Actor In a Musical 2001; NY Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle award nominations). On television he portrays lawyer Sid Raskin in the Starz TV series MAGIC CITY.  Avi’s newest show Still Jewish After All These Years will run from May 10th – 19th at the Boca Raton Theatre Guild.

Patti Gardner says she “is thrilled, honored and terrified to be performing the role of Roxie Hart in Chicago”. Known as one of South Florida’s busiest actresses, Patti just reprised her role in The Interview for The Women’s Theatre Project and was recently seen in LUV at the Plaza Theatre in Manalapan. She is a Carbonell Award-winner for her performance in Lips Together, Teeth Apart at Palm Beach Dramaworks, and has performed as the “Soap Star” in Menopause the Musical nationally for ten years.

Top Talent!

Carbonell Award-winning actor Avi Hoffman will star as Billy Flynn in the Boca Raton Theatre Guild’s upcoming production of Chicago. The classic Kander and Ebb musical will run from March 1st through March 17th at the Willow Theatre in Sugar Sand Park.  Sally Bondi will play Matron Ma Morton, and Ken Clement has been cast as Amos Hart. Auditions for other roles in the production will be held on Monday, September 10th, from 5 pm – 9 pm at the Willow Theatre.

Chicago will be directed by Keith Garson, and choreographed by Ron Hutchins. Eric Alsford will serve as the show’s musical director.

Populated with flamboyant flappers, crooked lawyers, and merry murderesses, Chicago is a musical tale of “murder, greed, corruption, violence, exploitation, adultery, and treachery – all those things we hold near and dear to our hearts.”  With a sparkling script and a classic score that includes “All That Jazz,” “Cell Block Tango” and “Razzle Dazzle”, Chicago has everything that makes musical theatre great.

Avi Hoffman took home a 2011 Carbonell Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Musical for his portrayal of Wilbur Turnblad in the Actors Playhouse production of Hairspray. Other recent roles include novelist Eric Weiss in Parade Productions’ production of Donald Margulies’ Brooklyn Boy at the Studio Theatre in Boca Raton; the lead role in Tracy Lett’s Superior Donuts at Gablestage (Broadway World Award for Best Featured Actor, and Carbonell award nomination for Best Actor in a Play); and Kolenkhov in the Florida Rep production of You Can’t Take it With You.  He is well known for his award winning one man shows Too Jewish? and Too Jewish, Too! (Performer of the Year ’95 – NY Press Magazine; L.A. OVATION award – Best Actor In a Musical 2001; NY Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle award nominations).  On television, Hoffman portrays lawyer Sid Raskin in Starz TV series Magic City, and was featured as ‘Teddy Wayne’ in the NBC series Law and Order. He also starred in the motion picture The Imported Bridegroom and was seen in the PBS documentary They Came For Good: A History of the Jews in the U.S.

The Boca Raton Theatre Guild is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to producing professional productions and advancing the art of theatre in the South Florida community.

All performances will take place in the Willow Theatre in Sugar Sand Park.  The theatre is located at 300 South Military Trail in Boca Raton, just south of Palmetto Park Road.  Tickets for Chicago are $35, and will be available at the Willow Theatre Box office: 561-347-3948 in the fall.
