Baby Boom Baby
to the
Palm Beaches Theatre
April 28 – May 15

March 24, 2016:

MANALAPAN, FL:  Comedy Central/National Lampoon star Tommy Koenig’s Baby Boom Baby has been called wildly entertaining, touching, and very, very funny!  It has also been called well-written, high energy and invigorating.  Koenig will bring his one man “‘musicomedy’- a flashback through our times and the music that defined them” to the Palm Beaches theatre from April 28th through May 15th.

Baby Boom Baby is Koenig’s story, told from his distinctly Baby Boomer perspective. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1953, the year Rock and Roll was born.  Raised in Rockaway Beach, the son of a musician who played with Glenn Miller during WW2, Koenig was greatly influenced by chance meetings with John F. Kennedy and later George Carlin, and mostly by what the Beatles brought – the influence of music on Boomers’ culture and personal choices.  In Baby Boom Baby Koenig recounts the years he struggled to keep up with the changing times, just missing Woodstock by a few miles; the rites of passage of College, Travel, Sex and Drugs; and the ever changing cultural and political landscape that music unleashed as it morphed from Disco to Punk to MTV to Rap and beyond.

During the show Koenig channels dozens of well-known – and original – characters in a one man tour de force spanning 7 decades. With original songs and parodies of everyone from The Beatles to Lady Gaga, and from Doo Wop to Hip Hop, Koenig’s impressions include Elton John, Billy Joel, Blondie, Prince, Tina Turner, Bruce Springsteen, The Bee Gees, the Eagles, among others.

DSC_0043“Baby Boom Baby is the culmination and combination of my work in theatre, stand-up comedy, music and art,” Koenig explains. “I get to do it all in this one show. Most of my career I have done all these things separately. I have been an actor since I graduated college ( SUNY Buffalo); a stand-up comedian since the early wave of comedy clubs that spread across the country; a sketch player as well as writer with National Lampoon (If We’re Late Start Without Us  on tour and Class of ’86 Off Broadway and filmed for Showtime); a musical parodist who opened for headliners such as Bonnie Raitt and Joan Jett; co-writer with musicians like Bernie Worrell of The Talking Heads and P Funk; and an artist with many commissions and sales of my ‘Paintings in 3D’ series. In Baby Boom Baby I get to bring all this into play.

Koenig’s first one-man show, The Living Experiment, began in 1987 and ran through 1992 with extended runs in New York and Los Angeles: “It was the first time I had done a show alone but with an ensemble of characters, some of which still appear in Baby Boom Baby – I’ve learned that some routines take years to be perfected and evolved,” he explains. “As George Carlin said “After 35 years of doing this I’m finally starting to figure some of this shit out”.

“It was when I was invited to be an Artist in Residence at The Santa Barbara Theatre in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico in 2009 that the idea for the show really began. For years I’d wanted to do a show called Baby Boom Baby, telling my personal story and the story of my generation through the rock and roll music that influenced Boomers just like me.
BBBTK“I realized although the nostalgia machine was finally getting to our generation with shows like Beatlemania and Beautiful, there wasn’t a show that told the whole story of what it was like to be a Baby Boomer growing up through the decades. I felt that the musical impressions and characters would be entertaining – but what surprises me most is how my story is resonating with the audiences and how they’re really embracing it and the message in it – a return to Peace, Love and Understanding – which is also very rare these days. And there’s nothing better than having a fellow graying Boomer rush back down the aisle and exclaim “That was ME!!” Seeing that audiences of every age who attend the show are ‘getting it’ is a revelation and inspires me to keep doing this show.”

Tommy Koenig has appeared in movies (Mel Brooks’ Dracula: Dead and Loving It, Mel Brooks’ Robin Hood: Men in Tights) and on television (Boston Legal, Miami Vice, Not Necessarily the News); he was featured on NBC’s Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert where he appeared with David Bowie and Rick James. Around the country in various arenas he opened for artists as varied as Warren Zevon, Alvin Lee, Bonnie Raitt, Dave Mason, Los Lobos, and Joan Jett.   Koenig teaches Stand Up Comedy at the Comics Studio in New York.  One of his students, Brad Zimmerman, has just completed a sold out run at the Palm Beaches Theatre in My Son the Waiter:  A Jewish Tragedy.

Baby Boom Baby will run from April 28th through May 15th at the Palm Beaches Theatre in Manalapan (formerly Florida Stage/Plaza Theatre).  Tickets are on sale now, and are available on line at palmbeachestheatre.org  or by phone at 855-728-8497.  Tickets for Baby Boom Baby are $40. February 11, 2016
MARGATE, FL:  What’s New Pussycat? The Soundtrack of an Era the popular Michael Leeds/Kevin Black musical compendium of the music of the 1960s will return to Stage Door Theatre beginning February 19th, and run through March 27th.

“We’ve had so many requests to bring back the show, not only from people who didn’t get to see it, but from those who want to see it again!” Michael Leeds explains.  “For this go round we’ve hired six very talented actor/singer/dancers from New York.  Actually, the three guys were in the show we just did, Pompadour, and we were so impressed, we asked them to stick around!  Kevin and I are having a great time re-visiting the 60s and hearing these new voices sing those incredible songs. How can you get tired of songs like “Yesterday”, “Dancing in the Street”, and of course, “What’s New, Pussycat!””

The idea for What’s New Pussycat? The Soundtrack of an Era was born when Stage Door Theatre’s artistic director Derelle Bunn mentioned to Leeds and Black that she had an open time slot for a show in the summer of 2014, and asked them if they’d be interested in ‘doing something’. They jumped at the chance. “Kevin and I had wanted to work together for a while, and this was a terrific opportunity,” Leeds said.  “And then, of course, the question became – what should we do?!”

What’s New Pussycat? The Soundtrack of an Era, the result of their collaboration opened at Stage Door Theatre in August of 2014 and was an immediate hit with audiences and critics alike.

“What’s New, Pussycat? was originally going to be a revue of just Burt Bacharach songs,” Leeds explained at the time.  “But as Kevin and I started listening to Bacharach’s music, we kept being distracted by other great songs of the same era.  So we decided to expand the show to include The Mamas & The Papas, Simon & Garfunkel, Petula Clark, Dusty Springfield, Etta James, Ray Charles, The Righteous Brothers, The Fifth Dimension and all those Motown greats like The Four Tops, The Temptations, The Supremes, The Ronettes, as well as incredible composers and writers like Henry Mancini, Michel LeGrand and of course, Burt Bacharach!

“Creating the piece took careful deliberation, Leeds continued: “From past experience, both Kevin and I learned that though there are no “rules” to creating a musical revue, there are some guidelines.  First, of course, is what songs are the most popular; the songs the audience is coming to hear.”   (See below for a complete list of songs)

Leeds and Black will revisit their roles as the show’s director and choreographer, and Carbonell Award-winner Eric Alsford will once again serve as What’s New Pussycat’s musical director/arranger.

The What’s New Pussycat?  The Soundtrack of an Era’s cast consists of Jessica Bennett, Brandon Godfrey, Preston Grover, Caitlie Moss, Dana Reminsky, and Jay Wilkinson.

Actor/Comedian Brad Zimmerman’s hilarious and inspiring story
about the grit and passion required to ‘make it’ as an artist and the sweet rewards that come from never giving up on your dream.

January 12, 2016

MANALAPAN, FL:  Brad Zimmerman’s My Son the Waiter:  A Jewish Tragedy is the story of one man’s struggle to fulfill his dream and ‘make it’ as a comedic actor in New York.  One part standup, one part theatrical, and all parts uproarious My Son the Waiter:  A Jewish Tragedy will open at Manalapan’s Palm Beaches Theatre on February 4th, and run through March 27th.

Brad Zimmerman

Brad Zimmerman has paid his dues.  He spent 29 years “temporarily” waiting tables in
New York, all the while chasing a career in acting and comedy.  He tells of his pursuit, along with stories about his childhood, family, and misbegotten love life with warmth, wit, self deprecating humor, and wicked charm, and combines his years of training as an actor with his innate comedic talent.

And of course Zimmerman also examines the trials and tribulations of waiting on tables – particularly for someone not exactly invested in that career, and with little tolerance for persnickety diners:

“I don’t want 60 questions, get to the point!” he said he would tell restaurant patrons when he sat down for a recent interview for The New York Times. He joked that if diners prefaced their orders by saying they were in a hurry he would say “So go!” He says he did enjoy some of the bantering he did with diners, and often tried out material on them, however there were also ‘the bossy customers who would snap their fingers to get his attention… and the health-food obsessives who elaborately customized their orders and button-holed him over ingredients.’  As he says in My Son the Waiter: A Jewish Tragedy, he was convinced his epitaph would read “I’ll be right with you.”

His perseverance and hard work eventually did pay off, and Zimmerman went on to act – he had a small part in “The Sopranos” playing Johnny Sack’s lawyer – and become the opening act for a number of well-known entertainers, including George Carlin, Brad Garrett, Dennis Miller, Julio Iglesias, and Joan Rivers who said “I’ve had three great opening acts in my lifetime:  Billy Crystal, Garry Shandling, and Brad Zimmerman.”

Brad Zimmerman

Zimmerman worked on the script for My Son the Waiter:  A Jewish Tragedy for 9 years and performed it in small venues all over the country, including a stint at Stage Door Theatre in Margate, where it came to the attention of producers Dana Matthow and Philip Roy (Respect: A Musical Journey of Women, Old Jews Telling Jokes, My Mother’s Italian, My Father’s Jewish & I’m in Therapy). Since then My Son the Waiter:  A Jewish Tragedy spent 2 years at Off-Broadway’s Stage 72 at the Triad Theatre in New York, and has toured the USA from coast to coast.

My Son the Waiter: A Jewish Tragedy will run from February 4th through March 27th at the Palm Beaches Theatre in Manalapan (formerly Florida Stage/Plaza Theatre).  Tickets are on sale now, and are available on line at MySonTheWaiter.com or by phone at 844-448-7469.  For group rates (12 +) call 888-264-1788.  Tickets for My Son the Waiter: A Jewish Tragedy range from $40 – $65.
