BOCA RATON, FL: Brad Zimmerman’s newest show, My Son the Waiter: A Jewish Tragedy & Still Not Famous will make its South Florida debut March 22^nd and 23^rd at the Boca Black Box Center for the Arts.

Zimmerman’s hilarious and poignant story is still universal in its message: If you embark upon the journey to follow your dream, and demonstrate the grit and passion required to ‘make it’ as an artist, the rewards that come from never giving up are very much worth the ‘blood, sweat, and tears’.

“I have been working on this show for about 6 years,” Zimmerman explains. “It is not a hybrid as the first piece was – which means half standup/half theatre. This is more of a play. As the first one does, it chronicles my journey – starting when I was very young – and takes the audience right up to the present. But it is done in more of a play format. There is lots of humor but also poignancy.

“The reason I started to work on this is that even while performing the first show it gave me a creative outlet – and without that, I wouldn’t have known what to do with myself,” he continues. “In this second piece I don’t glaze over things…I dive into them more deeply than in the first piece, which I think makes for a more universal and relatable performance. And even if the audience is familiar with my story in general, they will find this play to be nothing like the first one. Of course,” he concludes, “There are stories about my childhood and my education and my introduction to theatre and comedy and my social life …and naturally… my mother!”

Brad Zimmerman moved to New York and ‘temporarily’ worked as a waiter for 29 years while pursuing his career as an actor. Eventually he got a role on the Sopranos and work as a comedian, opening for Joan Rivers for eight years, as well as for Brad Garrett, and George Carlin. His first show, My Son the Waiter: A Jewish Tragedy has played throughout the United States for over ten years.

AVENTURA, FL: Brad Zimmerman will bring his hit New York Comedy back to South Florida this season in his highly praised autobiographical comedy, My Son the Waiter: A Jewish Tragedy. Zimmerman’s hilarious and poignant story is universal in its message: The journey to follow one’s dream… and the parents who SUFFER through it! The show will run from December 19^th through January 12^th in the Alan and Diane Lieberman Theater at the Michael-Ann Russell JCC in Aventura.

“My Son the Waiter: A Jewish Tragedy is now in its sixth year of a national tour,” Zimmerman says. “We’ve been all over the country – in cities such as New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago, LA, Minneapolis, and Toronto. It doesn’t matter where the show plays – audiences all seem to find my story authentic and real… and funny! There is new material and old material and the positive audience response allows and enables me to keep it as fresh as the day I wrote it.

“So many fan letters and marriage proposals over the years,” he continues with a grin. “It’s amazing that I’m still very much single. But my mom in Boca is as proud as she could be of me and the show, and of course every time I visit, I get another 15 minutes of material!

Zimmerman’s mother has finally adapted to her ‘actor-waiter’ son’s career choice and financial situation: “If all goes well, I think Brad is going to buy a bookcase,” she boasts to her friends.

Brad Zimmerman has paid his dues. He spent 29 years “temporarily” waiting tables in New York, all the while chasing a career in acting and comedy. In My Son the Waiter: A Jewish Tragedy, he delves into the trials and tribulations of waiting on tables – particularly for someone not exactly invested in that career, and with little tolerance for persnickety diners. And he tells stories about his pursuit of his passion, along with tales about his childhood, his family, and his misbegotten love life with warmth, wit, self-deprecating humor, and wicked charm, combining his years of training as an actor with his innate comedic talent.

Zimmerman’s perseverance and hard work eventually did pay off, and he went on to act – he had a small part in “The Sopranos” playing Johnny Sack’s lawyer – and to become the opening act for a number of well-known entertainers, including George Carlin, Brad Garrett, Dennis Miller, Julio Iglesias, and Joan Rivers who said “I’ve had three great opening acts in my lifetime: Billy Crystal, Garry Shandling, and Brad Zimmerman.”

My Son the Waiter: A Jewish Tragedy is the story of Zimmerman’s struggle to fulfill his dream and ‘make it’ as a comedic actor in New York. One-part standup, one-part theatrical, and all parts uproarious My Son the Waiter: A Jewish Tragedy has garnered rave reviews wherever it has played, including sold out runs Off Broadway in New York, Philadelphia, Boston, Atlanta, Toronto, San Diego, Thousand Oaks, CA, Huntington Beach, CA., Palm Beach, FL., the Northshore PAC in Skokie, Illinois, The Gordon Center For Performing Arts in Maryland, the George Street Playhouse in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and dozens of other cities throughout the USA.

Brad Zimmerman has paid his dues. He spent 29 years “temporarily” waiting tables in New York, all the while chasing a career in acting and comedy. “I don’t want 60 questions, get to the point!” he said he would tell restaurant patrons when he sat down for a recent interview for The New York Times. He joked that if diners prefaced their orders by saying they were in a hurry he would say “So go!” He says he did enjoy some of the bantering he did with diners, and often tried out material on them, however there were also ‘the bossy customers who would snap their fingers to get his attention… and the health-food obsessives who elaborately customized their orders and button-holed him over ingredients.’ As he says in My Son the Waiter: A Jewish Tragedy, he was convinced his epitaph would read “I’ll be right with you.”

His perseverance and hard work eventually did pay off, and Zimmerman went on to act – he had a small part in “The Sopranos” playing Johnny Sack’s lawyer – and to become the opening act for a number of well-known entertainers, including George Carlin, Brad Garrett, Dennis Miller, Julio Iglesias, and Joan Rivers who said “I’ve had three great opening acts in my lifetime: Billy Crystal, Garry Shandling, and Brad Zimmerman.”

Zimmerman worked on the script for My Son the Waiter: A Jewish Tragedy for 9 years and performed it in small venues all over the country, including a stint at Florida’s Stage Door Theatre, where it came to the attention of producers Dana Matthow and Philip Roy (Respect: A Musical Journey of Women, Old Jews Telling Jokes, My Mother’s Italian, My Father’s Jewish & I’m in Therapy). Old Jews Telling Jokes showcases five actors in a comedy that pays tribute to and reinvents classic jokes of the past and present. It celebrates the rich tradition of Jewish humor “and all the rabbis, complaining wives, fed-up husbands, patience-challenged physicians, gossiping ladies and competitive men” populating it. The humor can be suggestive (sometimes even raunchy) as the ‘Old Jews’ make fun of themselves as well as followers of every other religion.

BOCA RATON, FL: Brad Zimmerman will return to South Florida this season in his highly praised autobiographical comedy, My Son the Waiter: A Jewish Tragedy. The show will run from December 15^th through January 29^th at the Mizner Park Cultural Arts Center in Boca Raton.

Every mother dreams her children will grow up to be happy, healthy, and successful. Every Jewish mother secretly – and often not so secretly – adds specifics to her wish: A doctor, a lawyer, a dentist, or these days, a Silicon Valley tycoon would make her very happy. Brad Zimmerman’s mother has finally adapted to her ‘actor-waiter’ son’s career choice and financial situation: “If all goes well, I think Brad is going to buy a bookcase,” she boasts to her friends.
Brad Zimmerman has paid his dues. He spent 29 years “temporarily” waiting tables in New York, all the while chasing a career in acting and comedy. He tells of his pursuit, along with stories about his childhood, family, and misbegotten love life with warmth, wit, self-deprecating humor, and wicked charm, and combines his years of training as an actor with his innate comedic talent.

And of course Zimmerman also examines the trials and tribulations of waiting on tables – particularly for someone not exactly invested in that career, and with little tolerance for persnickety diners:

Zimmerman worked on the script for My Son the Waiter: A Jewish Tragedy for 9 years and performed it in small venues all over the country, including a stint at Stage Door Theatre in Margate, where it came to the attention of producers Dana Matthow and Philip Roy (Respect: A Musical Journey of Women, Old Jews Telling Jokes, My Mother’s Italian, My Father’s Jewish & I’m in Therapy). Since then My Son the Waiter: A Jewish Tragedy spent 2 years at Off-Broadway’s Stage 72 at the Triad Theatre in New York, and has toured the USA from coast to coast, including a very successful run at The Palm Beaches Theatre in Manalapan last season.

Invasion of Privacy is based on the lawsuit brought against Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings (The Yearling) by her neighbor, Zelma Cason. Cason contended that Rawlings’ description of ‘her’ character in Rawlings’ book Cross Creek made her out to be a ‘hussy’ and sued the author for invasion of privacy (the courts of the time found libel to be too ambiguous). It was a cause of action that had never been argued in a Florida court. “That was a time when a woman lawyer was a novelty in the South, and man’s moonshine was nobody’s business, and an invasion-of-privacy lawsuit was something of a brand-new issue, which eventually became a popular reason for going to court.” Jack Lyons, Theatre & Film

In Waiting for Godot, two wandering tramps, Vladimir and Estragon, wait by a lonely tree, to meet up with Mr. Godot, an enigmatic figure in a world where time, place and memory are blurred and meaning is where you find it. She meets TV producer-director Vito Pignoli when she (unsuccessfully) auditions for one of his commercials. Vito is charmed by Theda’s offbeat take on life. After the audition they share a cab, and Vito, the nice guy that he is, helps Theda carry her Christmas packages to her door. She invite’s Vito in, hoping he will read her latest ‘masterpiece’ and help connect her to a producer. Vito happily accepts the invitation, but he has other things on his mind. What happens there, on that fateful snowy Christmas Eve in Theda’s East Village apartment is the basis of this laugh-out-loud madcap comedy.

The name Pocahontas, belonging to the daughter of the powerful Algonquin Chief Powhatan, means “She-Who-Likes-To-Be-Mischievous.” It’s a fitting name, because the princess enjoys playing tricks and games, especially with Wolf, Raven and Squirrel… her playmates in the forest. She also makes friends with the English settlers in the struggling community of Jamestown. They have no food, and sickness has almost wiped them out. Pocahontas would like to help them, but Thundercloud, the medicine man, forbids it. When Captain John Smith, the leader of Jamestown, comes to the Indian village, he is condemned to death. They’ve never met Sarah’s boyfriend, Chris Kringle, who doesn’t exactly fit that description, so to make them happy she invents Dr. David Steinberg – the man of their dreams. MANALAPAN, FL: Brad Zimmerman’s My Son the Waiter: A Jewish Tragedy is the story of one man’s struggle to fulfill his dream and ‘make it’ as a comedic actor in New York. One part standup, one part theatrical, and all parts uproarious My Son the Waiter: A Jewish Tragedy will open at Manalapan’s Palm Beaches Theatre on February 4^th, and run through March 27^th.

Brad Zimmerman has paid his dues. He spent 29 years “temporarily” waiting tables in
New York, all the while chasing a career in acting and comedy. He tells of his pursuit, along with stories about his childhood, family, and misbegotten love life with warmth, wit, self deprecating humor, and wicked charm, and combines his years of training as an actor with his innate comedic talent.

His perseverance and hard work eventually did pay off, and Zimmerman went on to act – he had a small part in “The Sopranos” playing Johnny Sack’s lawyer – and become the opening act for a number of well-known entertainers, including George Carlin, Brad Garrett, Dennis Miller, Julio Iglesias, and Joan Rivers who said “I’ve had three great opening acts in my lifetime: Billy Crystal, Garry Shandling, and Brad Zimmerman.”
