BOCA RATON, FL: A deviously delicious Broadway horror comedy rock sci-fi musical, Little Shop of Horrors has devoured the hearts of theatre-goers for over 30 years. Sol Children Theatre will present this beloved cult classic, created by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken (Disney’s The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin), from October 4^th through October 20^th at Sol Theatre in Boca Raton. The production will feature a roster of talented young actors and Sol Troupe members.

Meek floral assistant Seymour Krelborn stumbles across a new breed of plant he names “Audrey II” – after his coworker crush. This R&B-singing carnivore promises unending fame and fortune to the down and out Krelborn as long as he keeps feeding it…blood. Over time, though, Seymour discovers Audrey II’s out of this world origins and intent towards global domination!

BOCA RATON, FL: If you’re looking for magical, imaginative, family-friendly theatre this summer, look no farther than Boca Raton! Sol Children Theatre will present Peter and the Starcatcher and Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical in repertory style from July 12^th through August 4^th. Both productions will star the talented young actors who are participating in the company’s Summer Repertory Theatre program.

“It started out as an exciting notion, doing Summer Repertory, and then it developed into feasible programming,” Sol Producer Sara Elizabeth Grant explains. “Two shows sharing a black box theatre isn’t easy, but it certainly presents an incredible opportunity for theatre magic to take place. And what better shows than to choose ones that revolve around magic! We’re so fortunate to have the directing and production team that we have on board, not to mention our exceptional two casts of young theatre artists. Watching these shows evolve is truly magical.”

The Tony Award-winning Peter and the Starcatcher upends the century-old story of how a miserable orphan comes to be The Boy Who Would Not Grow Up (a.k.a. Peter Pan). From marauding pirates and jungle tyrants to unwilling comrades and unlikely heroes, Peter and the Starcatcher playfully explores the depths of greed and despair, and the bonds of duty, friendship, and love.

Starcatcher’s cast includes Andrew Salmore, Austin Stein, Ava Cavasos, Calvin Zanetti, Hartlynn Ackerman, Kayla Asuoty, Megan Mascaro, Samantha Mascaro, and Tyler Wartmann. The production will be directed by Seth Trucks.

“I am beyond thrilled to be returning to Sol Children as a director for the third time,” Trucks says. “Given that we are presenting Peter and the Starcatcher I am especially excited to be working with such a talented and experienced cast of young actors. The open-ended nature of the stage directions in this play have allowed us to use their considerable imaginations to build the images and stage magic. The result is an original and authentic version of this beautiful play.”

Inspired by the genius of Roald Dahl, the multiple award-winning Matilda the Musical is a captivating masterpiece from the Royal Shakespeare Company that revels in the anarchy of childhood, the power of imagination, and the inspiring story of a girl who dreams of a better life.

BOCA RATON, FL: Sol Children Theatre will present The 25^th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee at Sol Theatre in Boca Raton from October 19^th through November 4^th.

Nominated for six Tony Awards, and winning 2, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee features an eclectic group of sixth graders who arrive at a fictional spelling bee set in the geographically ambiguous Putnam Valley Middle School to vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter – one speller leaves! At least the losers get a juice box!

The 25^th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee will be directed by Ryan McAtee. McAtee is a Seattle based director, choreographer, actor and solo performance artist. He is also Theatre/Movement Educator and teaches youths spanning pre-K to 12^th Grade:

“The 25^th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is one heck of a musical comedy, and truly one of my favorite shows” McAtee says. “This story revolves around a handful of 10-to-14-year-olds as they traverse the societal and familial pressures of what it means to be a competitive speller. While originally the roles are played by adults, implementing a cast of teens and preteens illuminates an honest and motivated outlook to the quirks and realities of these characters. Given this fresh perspective, I am beyond fortunate to be working with this cast: to present a story full of loveable and relatable humans with a passion for words and language. Even in a setting as organized as a Spelling Bee, we discover that life really can be P-A-N-D-E-M-O-N-I-U-M.”

BOCA RATON, FL: Charles Schulz’s beloved comic strip will come to life in Boca Raton when Sol Children Theatre presents You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown. The musical, which recently celebrated its 50^th anniversary, will run from August 3 – 19 at Sol Theatre in Boca Raton.

The whole gang will be there: bossy Lucy, hopelessly in love with piano prodigy Schroeder; perfectionist Sally, harassing blanket-toting Linus; Snoopy, in (or on) his doghouse, and of course ‘Blockhead’ himself, Charlie Brown. Brief vignettes span the months from Valentine’s Day to Beethoven Day, from wild optimism to utter despair. But through it all, the sweet, joyful innocence of the Peanuts gang stays true.

Courtney Poston will direct the production: “It is a pleasure to have the opportunity to direct You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown, and to help keep Peanuts alive for this younger generation,” she says. “I grew up on the comics and TV show, as did my parents (and grandparents), and this musical has a special place in my heart as I played “Sally” in a production in Boca years ago. The musical is written to be performed by adults, but I think it is even more charming to have children portray these iconic characters. They deliver the lines with such honesty, and don’t even have to think about “the funny”, it just comes out naturally.

“Charlie Brown and the gang deal with such relatable topics to young people (and adults, for that matter) such as: fitting in, bullying, struggling in school, breaking bad habits, valuing your friends, etc.” she continues. “In our table read, we discussed some of these situations, and to quote the kids: “Sometimes people are hard on you, sometimes you’re hard on yourself, but it’s important to find happiness in the little things and to remember your friends and family love you.”

Poston’s young cast consists of Ava Callahan as Charlie Brown (Boca Raton Community Middle School), Nisa Guvenilir as Lucy (Omni Middle School), Piper Fine as Snoopy (Citrus Cove Elementary School), Tillie Pepos-Lebrun as Schroeder (Pine Crest School), Maureen Tracy as Linus (Somerset Academy), and Eden Wexler as Sally (Del Prado Elementary School).

Sara Elizabeth Grant who is acting as both the show’s producer and choreographer has seen the show’s young cast come together and form a special bond: “An overall theme throughout You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown is that though times may be difficult, at least you’re surrounded by those who have your back,” she says. “This is a remarkably fitting production for our cast, where on the first day of rehearsal not a one of them knew each other and were so nervous, to now where they have built a sweet energetic family unit both on and off stage. It’s encouraging to watch this young group of actors tackling such difficult material with ease and confidence. They have truly embraced what it is to be the “Peanuts” and are bringing this musical to life.”

BOCA RATON, FL: If theatre audiences are looking for travel and adventure this holiday season, they need venture no farther than to Sol Theatre in Boca Raton, where Sol Children Theatre will present a brand new musical adaptation of Jules Verne’s classic tale, Around the World in 80 Days. From London to Bombay and Yokohama to San Francisco; through typhoons, out-of- control trains, and into the deepest reaches of the imagination, this family friendly adventure will delight audiences of all ages. The production will run from December 8^th through December 23^rd in the popular ‘black box’ theatre.

Phileas Fogg has bet he can race around the world – from London and back to London – in a mere 80 days, but the pressure’s on and time is running out. At his side, a band of quirky adventurers. At their heels, a relentless Scotland Yard detective. At stake, surviving utterly fantastic adventures across India, China, Japan and America – beating the clock – and winning the bet.

The production will be directed by Rosalie Grant, Sol’s dynamic founder and artistic director:

“When I discovered this version of Around the World in 80 Days I instantly knew two things: Sol had to stage it, and I had to direct it!” says Grant. “I’ve always loved the story, and this version is wonderfully funny, and the music is very catchy! It is a perfect family theatre show with enough laughs for adults as well. I am having the time of my life directing an amazing cast of young actors in addition to adults who are my colleagues and friends.”

Around the World in 80 Days’ combination of adult and child actors include Murphy Hayes as Phileas Fogg, Christian Matthiesen (L’Ambiance – Virtual School) as Passepartout, Faith Alfieri (Spanish River Christian School) as Inspector Fix, and Renèe Elizabeth Turner as Aouda.

Renèe Elizabeth Turner agrees: “I am beyond honored to be a part of this exciting production inspired by the beloved Jules Verne novel,” she enthuses. “This is a show about adventure, self-discovery, and having faith in what you can achieve even when the odds are against you. The role of Princess Aouda is one that continually proves to be far more than a traditional female romantic lead. She is a woman who is loyal, caring, well educated, and strong; even while living in a culture where the traditions of human sacrifice and arranged marriages are the social norm. Thus, these unfortunate circumstances force her into the confines of never knowing what it truly means to freely fall in love. It is an absolute joy to present the musical version of this timeless classic with this incredible cast.”

Avi Hoffman’s Too Jewish? premiered Off-Broadway at New York’s Houseman Theatre in 1994 and has been presented thousands of times all over the world, as well as on the national PBS network. Old Jews Telling Jokes showcases five actors in a comedy that pays tribute to and reinvents classic jokes of the past and present. It celebrates the rich tradition of Jewish humor “and all the rabbis, complaining wives, fed-up husbands, patience-challenged physicians, gossiping ladies and competitive men” populating it. The humor can be suggestive (sometimes even raunchy) as the ‘Old Jews’ make fun of themselves as well as followers of every other religion.

In this futuristic capitalist dystopia, an outbreak of disease killed millions and resulted in heavily regulated human interaction (and intimacy). Anjali has a government-issued job as the madam to a sex robot. The Rocky Horror Show is an outrageous assemblage of – and humorous tribute to – the most stereotypical science fiction and horror movies, Marvel comics, Frankie Avalon/Annette Funicello outings and rock ‘n’ roll of every vintage. The play (upon which the classic film The Rocky Horror Picture Show is based) has grown from an experimental production originally produced in a small London theatre in June 1973, to a cult phenomenon with fans world-wide. BOCA RATON, FL: Sol Theatre will play host to The Mad Hatter, The Queen of Hearts, Tweedledum, Tweedledee, and of course The White Rabbit, when Sol Children Theatre presents Seth Trucks’ adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s magical classic, Alice in Wonderland. The production will open on August 10^th, and run through August 20^th at the popular Boca Raton venue. Alice and her friends will then move to the Delray Beach Children’s Garden for three special sunset performances on August 24^th, 25^th, and 26^th.

“This is an original adaptation written specifically for Sol Theatre the actors involved in the production,” explains the show’s director, Seth Trucks. “Our co-director, Savannah Rootes, is a recent graduate of Sol Children’s Troupe and she has returned to pass on her knowledge and passion to our newer members.

“We have enough enthusiasm to power Boca for a year!” Trucks continues. “Our production will balance a faithful approach to Carroll’s language, with a ton of new twists and takes on Wonderland and its strange inhabitants.”

Alice in Wonderland – originally titled Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland – was first published in 1865 and immediately became a publishing sensation, beloved by children and adults alike. The book has never been out of print, and has been translated into close to 180 languages. In Trucks’ adaptation, Alice finds a glove belonging to a White Rabbit, and wanting to return it, she follows him down a rabbit hole, into a fantastical Wonderland, where the Queen of Hearts rules over a peculiar assortment of creatures, and Alice’s adventures become ‘curiouser and curiouser’.

Alice in Wonderland’s Alice will be played by three actors: Eden Wexler, Mandy Feuerman and Zoe Alarcon; Noah Fineman has been cast as The White Rabbit, Ava Cavasos as The Mad Hatter, and Brooke Hall as The Queen of Hearts. Other cast members include Jamie Feuerman, Zoe Wexler, Addison Wexler, Zoe Alarcon, Sami Mascaro, Kimberly Wilkinson, Faith Alfieri, Isabella Welch, Natalie Macadar, Emma and Kylie Lawrence, Alan and Amalia Hasselman, Violet Zeiders, Olivia Shiver, Celia Roberts, and Rylee Siegel.

Seth Trucks studied experimental theatre at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, and classical theatre at the British American Drama Academy and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. In New York, Seth performed with Fractured Atlas, Synaesthetic Theatre, and worked as a freelance fight choreographer. He also spent five years as a writer/performer with the New York based comedy troupe, The Six Characters. In Florida, Seth has performed with the Palm Beach Shakespeare Festival, Outré Theatre Company and Entr’Acte Theatrix. He recently received glowing reviews in Evening Star Productions’ Waiting for Godot, and is currently starring in Outré Theatre Company’s 1984.

BOCA RATON, FL: Although Evening Star Productions and Sol Children Theatre are not yet through their fourth and fifteenth seasons, both companies – under the direction of founder and Artistic Director Rosalie Grant – are deep into preparation for next year’s productions.

Evening Star Productions 2017-2018 season will begin with David Mamet’s Oleanna (September 21 – October 8, 2017), continue with Shakespeare’s Macbeth (October 26 – 28), and conclude with Peter Gordon’s Secondary Cause of Death (April 20 – May 6, 2018).

Sol Children Theatre will present Around the World in 80 Days (a musical, adapted from the Jules Verne classic by Chris Blackwood, with music by Piers Chater Robinson) (December 8 – 23, 2017), Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella (March 1 – 18, 2018), and a musical version of Roald Dahl’s James and the Giant Peach (August 24 – September 2, 2018).

Sol Theatre’s final production of the 2016-2017 season, Alice in Wonderland, adapted and directed by Seth Trucks, will run from August 10 through August 20.

“Sol Theatre’s 2017-2018 Season needs to be a big party!” Rosalie Grant explains. “All season long we’ll be celebrating Sol Children Theatre turning sweet sixteen! With the exception of Rodger’s & Hammerstein’s Cinderella, which will feature all children and teen actors, we will be casting the Sol Children shows age appropriately, giving local actors more chances to get on stage, and our patrons the chance to enjoy professional actors in great children’s musicals!

Evening Star Productions’ recent production of Samuel Beckett’s existential masterpiece Waiting for Godot garnered rave reviews from critics and audiences alike, along with the honor of a Carbonell recommendation, and the young company’s 2017-18 season will once again offer audiences an eclectic – and exciting – menu to choose from. “Following the extraordinary success of Godot we’re pleased to kick off Evening Star’s fourth season with the still-relevant Oleanna, by David Mamet, followed by Peter Gordon’s Secondary Cause of Death,” Grant reveals. “Secondary Cause of Death is the sequel to Murdered to Death – which proved to be wildly popular when we produced it in April 2016. And we’re delighted to announce that Seth Trucks will be back as the inept Inspector Pratt, and Murphy Hayes will return as Colonel Craddock.

“We will be announcing additions to the Evening Star season through our newest endeavor, Sol After Dark, which will kick off in October with a one-act adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth,” Grant continues. “This lineup of productions will feature an all-inclusive evening in one ticket price: a “bite” of theatre, refreshments and talk backs after the shows which will include Shakespeare, absurdism, science fiction etc… something a little off the beaten theatre path for those hungry for a different bite of theatre. All of us at Sol are very excited for 2017 – 18.”

BOCA RATON, FL: The beloved tale of the penny-pinching miser, Ebenezer Scrooge, and the awakening of his long-forgotten festive spirit is a seasonal tradition for many. Sol Children Theatre will revisit Charles Dickens’ ghostly tale of the Past, Present, and Future when they present Brian Way’s faithful adaptation of Dickens’ timeless classic. The production will run from December 2^nd through December 18^th at Sol Theatre in Boca Raton.

First published on December 19^th, 1843, Dickens’ novella immediately met with critical and popular acclaim, and has never been out of print. A Christmas Carol illustrates the author’s concerns about time, family, and society’s ills; however Dickens also used his own humiliating childhood experiences, along with his sympathy for the poor, and various fairy tales and seasonal stories to enhance his tale.

Charles Dickens’ The Christmas Carol will be directed by Christopher Mitchell, and will feature a cast composed of adults and children.

“With it paying homage to both a cherished story and treasured holiday, I’m thrilled to be directing this production,” Mitchell says. “It’s eerie spooky undertones and touching story line have been great fun to play with. Everyone loves a good ghost story and a great Christmas story. And with this play, you get both!”

Director Mitchell’s adult cast includes Jim Gibbons as Ebenezer Scrooge; Murphy Hayes as Jacob Marley and Joe; Robert Fabano as Bob Cratchit. Other adult cast members include Sara Grant, Barry Katz, Fern Katz, Constance Moreau, Jenna Wyatt, Jeremy Wershoven, Amy Coker, John Maher, Neil Evangelista, Shafer Ross, and Melanie Leivers. Younger cast members include Eden Wexler as Tiny Tim, as well as Faith Alfieri, and Sabrina Lipp.

Boca Raton’s Sol Children Theatre is a not-for-profit theatre organization founded by veteran director and actor Rosalie Grant fifteen years ago. The company’s mission is to provide children with a safe, secure, and highly professional theatre experience. Those children in then in turn provide quality theatre experiences for audiences. In this production of Charles Dickens’ The Christmas Carol, Sol students will have the opportunity to work with adult professional actors as well as with their contemporaries.

Brian Way (1923 – 2006), a British teacher, director, and writer, is often credited with originating educational theater for children. He and Margaret Faulkes, in founding the Theatre Center in London, introduced the concept of informal theatrical performances in school, and the expansion of arts education. In his lifetime he wrote over 50 plays, including Pinocchio, The Mirrorman, and Sleeping Beauty, as well as the renowned text Audience Participation.

While our mission remains the same – to produce high quality theater for all ages – we are broadening the genre of our productions. We will still have wonderful children’s productions – performed by children. But in addition, we’ll have more adult comedies, dramas, and musicals, all to be performed in an intimate black box setting. I’m really looking forward to sharing this new and exciting journey with our audiences.”

It Had To Be You is an absurd, fast-paced comedy about Theda Blau, a zany, eccentric, ex-Hollywood B movie actress and ‘wannabe’ playwright seeking love and/or a writing partner in New York City. She meets TV producer-director Vito Pignoli when she (unsuccessfully) auditions for one of his commercials. Vito is charmed by Theda’s offbeat take on life. After the audition they share a cab, and Vito, the nice guy that he is, helps Theda carry her Christmas packages to her door. She invite’s Vito in, hoping he will read her latest ‘masterpiece’ and help connect her to a producer. Vito happily accepts the invitation, but he has other things on his mind. What happens there, on that fateful snowy Christmas Eve in Theda’s East Village apartment is the basis of this laugh-out-loud madcap comedy.

Ninety-one-year-old political activist Vera Joseph’s solitary existence is entirely shaken when her grandson, Leo, appears at the door in the middle of the night. Hi-ya-ya-hi-ya. Listen to the tom-tom drums and the message spoken by the “Wordspinner” that opens and closes this charming adventure suitable for all age groups. The name Pocahontas, belonging to the daughter of the powerful Algonquin Chief Powhatan, means “She-Who-Likes-To-Be-Mischievous.” It’s a fitting name, because the princess enjoys playing tricks and games, especially with Wolf, Raven and Squirrel… her playmates in the forest. She also makes friends with the English settlers in the struggling community of Jamestown. They have no food, and sickness has almost wiped them out. Pocahontas would like to help them, but Thundercloud, the medicine man, forbids it. When Captain John Smith, the leader of Jamestown, comes to the Indian village, he is condemned to death. In a thrilling scene, Princess Pocahontas saves his life and finds a way for the Indians and the settlers to live in harmony and friendship. This colorful play features a wonderful cast of characters: Little Running Rabbit, Brave Eagle, Aunt Morning Star, Forest Spirits, Mother Earth and the people of Jamestown. Filled with Native American lore and true to the original legend, it’s an entertaining and fascinating page from our country’s history that glows with excitement and warmth.
