BOCA RATON, FL:  MNM Theatre Company will present The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee at The Willow Theatre December 2 – 18.  This will be the award-winning company’s first production at the popular Boca Raton venue.

Nominated for six Tony Awards, and winning 2, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee features an eclectic group of sixth graders (played by adult actors in uproariously comical caricatures), who arrive at a fictional spelling bee set in the geographically ambiguous Putnam Valley Middle School to vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime; the Bee is run by three equally quirky grown-ups. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter – one speller leaves! At least the losers get a juice box!

Marcie Gorman

“We are so pleased to be making our Willow Theatre debut with ‘Spelling Bee’”, says Marcie Gorman, MNM’s CEO and Producing Artistic Director. “This show is fun, funny, and heartwarming all at once.  It’s a bit ‘raunchy’, that’s true – so it’s not for very young audiences – but we think it will appeal to theatre patrons of just about any age.  And there’s even some audience participation – it’s very possible someone will be invited onstage and asked to spell ‘syzygy*’!”

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee will be directed by Johnathan Van Dyke, who will also do the show’s musical staging: “I am so excited about digging into this gem of a show,” he says. “The content is so strong and a rare gift for actors to sink their teeth into such fulfilling material.  The humor, music, and poignancy are all so relevant to the human condition I think audiences are in for a wonderful time at the theatre.”

Spelling Bee’s cast consists of Jen Chia as Marcy Park, Mikayla Cohen as Olive Ostrovsky, Jinon Deeb as Rona Lisa Perretti, Michael Harper as Chip Tolentino, Michael Materdomini as William Barfee, Geoffrey Mergele as Leaf Coneybear, Leah Sessa as Logainne Schwartzandgrubenniere, Troy J. Stanley as Vice Principal Douglas Panch, and James White lll as Mitch Mahoney.

As in the past, the production will be accompanied by a live band led by Musical Director Eric Alsford, with Rick Kissinger on woodwinds, Tim Kutcha on drums, Eden Marte on synthesizer, and Madalina Marcovel on cello.

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee’s Production Stage Manager is Francesca Barioli. The show’s Assistant Stage Manager is Anna Schulman, Production Manager/Set Design is Jordon Armstrong, Technical Director is Johnbarry Green, who will share Sound Design duties with Jordon Armstrong.  Penny Williams is Costume Design, and Abby Rasmussen is Props.

BOCA RATON, FL:  Sol Children Theatre will present The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee at Sol Theatre in Boca Raton from October 19th through November 4th.

Nominated for six Tony Awards, and winning 2, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee features an eclectic group of sixth graders who arrive at a fictional spelling bee set in the geographically ambiguous Putnam Valley Middle School to vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime.

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee will be directed by Ryan McAtee.  McAtee is a Seattle based director, choreographer, actor and solo performance artist.  He is also Theatre/Movement Educator and teaches youths spanning pre-K to 12th Grade:

Ryan McAtee

“The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is one heck of a musical comedy, and truly one of my favorite shows” McAtee says. “This story revolves around a handful of 10-to-14-year-olds as they traverse the societal and familial pressures of what it means to be a competitive speller. While originally the roles are played by adults, implementing a cast of teens and preteens illuminates an honest and motivated outlook to the quirks and realities of these characters. Given this fresh perspective, I am beyond fortunate to be working with this cast: to present a story full of loveable and relatable humans with a passion for words and language. Even in a setting as organized as a Spelling Bee, we discover that life really can be P-A-N-D-E-M-O-N-I-U-M.”

Spelling Bee’s young cast consists of Mia Salerno as William Barfee, Kylie Lawrence as Olive Ostrovsky, Angeline Zylstra as Leaf Coneybear, Abigail Medvecky as Judy Blanch, Brayden Wartmann as Chip Tolentino, Kimmy Wilkinson as Marcy Park, Sofia Jorgensen as Logan Schwartzandgrubenierre, Celia Roberts as Rona Lisa Peretti, Melissa Garcon as Douglas Panch, Nisa Guvenilir as Mitch Mahoney, Tinsley Louv as Leaf’s Mom and Carl, and Maureen Tracy as Jesus and Leaf’s Sister.

Ryan McAtee will also serve as the production’s Musical Director, and Sara Elizabeth Grant is the show’s Assistant Director and Stage Manager.  Scenic Art is by Kate McVay, Set Construction and Lighting Design is by Ardean Landhuis, and Costume Design is by Briana Earhart.  Natalie Macadar is the Assistant Stage Manager.

Tickets for The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee are on sale now and can be purchased on line at www.solchildren.org, or by phone at 561-447-8829. Tickets are $20 and $15 for Juniors (11 and under).

That lovable family of creepy kooks is alive and well and living in their super-spooky mansion in Central Park. The Addams family, led by the elegantly gaunt and seemingly undead Morticia and her ever-devoted husband Gomez, is in turmoil. Their daughter Wednesday, now 18, finds herself falling in love—a sensation that is unsettling for both her and her family of endearing misfits. When the teen invites her new boyfriend, Lucas Beineke, over with his “normal” family to get better acquainted with the Addams household, comic chaos (including everything from mixed-up potions to a scorching tango) ensues.

Old Jews Telling Jokes showcases five actors in a comedy that pays tribute to and reinvents classic jokes of the past and present.   It celebrates the rich tradition of Jewish humor “and all the rabbis, complaining wives, fed-up husbands, patience-challenged physicians, gossiping ladies and competitive men” populating it. The humor can be suggestive (sometimes even raunchy) as the ‘Old Jews’ make fun of themselves as well as followers of every other religion.

night of theatre.”

May 30, 2017

PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL:  Entr’Acte Theatrix will present The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee at the PGA Arts Center in Palm Beach Gardens from June 22 – July 2.

“We are happy to be aligning ourselves with the PGA Arts Center, and veteran producers Dana Matthow and Philip Roy, helping to grow their new venue and their audience base to become a popular destination for theatre in mid and north Palm Beach County,” says Entr’Acte Theatrix founder and Executive Producer Vicki Halmos. “Entr’Acte has an excellent reputation as a launching pad for emerging talent in the County; several of our alumni are Carbonell Award-winners, and a number of others have gone on to receive their Equity cards, and to work on and off Broadway and in national touring companies. With Spelling Bee Entr’Acte will bring a more traditional theatrical choice to the Center’s audiences – it’s a ‘tongue in cheek’ parody – and a rollicking, funny, and heart-warming musical that will appeal to theatre patrons of all ages and stages; it will put adults in touch with their inner child, and will bring back memories of their own youth.   And the audience participation aspect of the show will add another layer of enjoyment for our audiences – who knows – they might be asked to come on stage and spell s-y-z-y-g-y.*”

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee will be directed by Entr’Acte alumnus Carlo-Rufino Sabusap.  Sabusap has been with the company for10 years, and recently directed their production of Peter and the Star Catcher.

“The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is one of my all-time favorite shows,” Sabusap says. “It’s got a small cast, but a big heart, and tells so much about the experience of growing up, and the different types of relationships kids have with their parents.  Our production will hold on to the classic moments and themes of the show, while introducing some new things here and there that I haven’t seen in other productions.  Our amazing cast is sure to deliver a fun, hilarious, but touching experience for our audiences.”

Spelling Bee’s cast consists of Robyn Eli Brenner as William Barfee, Mary Grace Tesoriero as Olive Ostrovsky, Greg Halmos as Leaf Coneybear, Rosseroni Parris as Chip Tolentino, Rachel Ihasz as Marcy Park, Amanda Ruggiero as Logan Schwartzandgrubenierre, Lissen Ellington as Rona Lisa Peretti, David W. Lamphier as Douglas Panch, James White III as Mitch Mahoney, Megan Cires as Olive’s Mom and Others, and Patrick Kolta as Carl-Dad and Others. The production’s Musical Director is Anneliesa Tretheway, and the show’s Stage Manager is Sean Smyth.

It Had To Be You is an absurd, fast-paced comedy about Theda Blau, a zany,  eccentric, ex-Hollywood B movie actress and ‘wannabe’ playwright seeking love and/or a writing partner in New York City.  She meets TV producer-director Vito Pignoli when she (unsuccessfully) auditions for one of his commercials.  Vito is charmed by Theda’s offbeat take on life.  After the audition they share a cab, and Vito, the nice guy that he is, helps Theda carry her Christmas packages to her door.  She invite’s Vito in, hoping he will read her latest ‘masterpiece’ and help connect her to a producer.  Vito happily accepts the invitation, but he has other things on his mind.  What happens there, on that fateful snowy Christmas Eve in Theda’s East Village apartment is the basis of this laugh-out-loud madcap comedy.

How on earth can three men do the impossible:  act through William Shakespeare’s entire canon – 37 plays – in 97 minutes?  By summarizing the canon through football plays, rap songs, and outrageously condensed comedy, mash-up titles (like Four Weddings and a Transvestite) of course!  The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) hilariously summarizes all of Shakespeare’s plays using reenactments and audience participation.  It is famous for holding the (self-proclaimed) record for the shortest production of Hamlet at 43 seconds.  An extremely popular play that ran in London for nine years and has enjoyed countless productions in various languages throughout the world, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) entertains and teaches audiences facts about Shakespeare while ensuring them a rollicking good time.

Ninety-one-year-old political activist Vera Joseph’s solitary existence is entirely shaken when her grandson, Leo, appears at the door in the middle of the night.  Leo is fresh from a cross-country bike ride, and assures Vera that he won’t stay long.  Leo, however, is in crisis, confused by an on-again, off-again romance, furious with his mother’s incessant meddling, and grieving deeply for his best friend and biking partner, Micah, who is recently deceased. While Leo seeks solace in his grandmother, Vera finds companionship in another person since the loss of her husband, Joe.  A finalist for the 2013 Pulitzer Prize in Drama, Amy Herzog’s 4000 Miles is a compassionate, intimate, and frequently funny play that examines the love of family we can choose, the family we can’t, and the healing power of trust.

An eclectic group of six-graders arrives at The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, each eager to win for very different reasons. Sweet and shy Olive brings only her best friend (the dictionary) with her to the bee; Bold and hyper-allergic speller William Barfee uses his “magic foot” to propel him to greatness; former champion Chip is struggling with his burgeoning puberty; easily distracted Leaf is unconvinced that he’s smart enough to be a challenger; overachiever Marcy is disappointed by her consistent success; and politically aware Logainne Schwartzandgrubenierre only wants to impress her gay dads. In hilarious, touching, and catchy songs, each speller reveals his/her hopes, struggles, and passions as they make their way through the competition. With an engaging, tuneful score by William Finn and a sweet, funny book by Rachel Sheinkin, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee causes audiences to fall in love, both with the show itself and its “perspicacious,” “jocular,” and “effervescent” spellers.

Hi-ya-ya-hi-ya. Listen to the tom-tom drums and the message spoken by the “Wordspinner” that opens and closes this charming adventure suitable for all age groups. The name Pocahontas, belonging to the daughter of the powerful Algonquin Chief Powhatan, means “She-Who-Likes-To-Be-Mischievous.” It’s a fitting name, because the princess enjoys playing tricks and games, especially with Wolf, Raven and Squirrel… her playmates in the forest. She also makes friends with the English settlers in the struggling community of Jamestown. They have no food, and sickness has almost wiped them out. Pocahontas would like to help them, but Thundercloud, the medicine man, forbids it. When Captain John Smith, the leader of Jamestown, comes to the Indian village, he is condemned to death. In a thrilling scene, Princess Pocahontas saves his life and finds a way for the Indians and the settlers to live in harmony and friendship. This colorful play features a wonderful cast of characters: Little Running Rabbit, Brave Eagle, Aunt Morning Star, Forest Spirits, Mother Earth and the people of Jamestown. Filled with Native American lore and true to the original legend, it’s an entertaining and fascinating page from our country’s history that glows with excitement and warmth.
