BOCA RATON, FL: Philip Roger Roy and Playhouse Productions, Inc. will present the Off-Broadway hit, Old Jews Telling Jokes at the Mizner Park Cultural Arts Center beginning January 9, 2019. The show will run through February 10.

When Eric Spiegelman and his partner Tim Williams asked film and television producer Sam Hoffman if he had any ideas for an internet website, he pitched the concept of Old Jews Telling Jokes. Millions of views, shares, and guffaws later, Hoffman – in collaboration with Peter Gethers and Daniel Okrent, brought his Old Jews to New York for an extremely successful run at the Westside Theatre.

Old Jews Telling Jokes, which has been called a “pickle-barrel full of giggles”, showcases five actors in a revue-type production that pays tribute to and reinvents classic jokes of the past and present. It celebrates the rich tradition of Jewish humor “and all the rabbis, complaining wives, fed-up husbands, patience-challenged physicians, gossiping ladies and competitive men” populating it. The humor can be suggestive (sometimes even bawdy – the show has been suggested as being appropriate for audiences age 21 and up!) as the ‘Old Jews’ make fun of themselves as well as followers of every other religion. “Think Catskills comedy – with jokes, songs, stories, skits, and routines,” says Old Jews producer Philip Roger Roy. “The humor is reminiscent of the great Jewish comedians from Buddy Hackett and Alan King to Tom Lehrer and more. This show makes it obvious that Jewish humor is Universal – it’s American humor!”

“I attribute [Old Jews Telling Jokes’] success to a number of factors,” Sam Hoffman has said. “It’s funny. We launched …in [2009] the year when the recession was nearly at its worst and I think people really liked having something fun to download…. it celebrates older people with no irony, and I think that’s a fairly unusual commodity in popular entertainment.”

Jeremy Quinn will direct the production, which will feature Robyn Eli Brenner, Emily Freeman, Janna Morrison, David Samuel, Michael H. Small. Freeman and Small both recently received rave reviews when they were featured in Stage Door Theatre’s production of Nice Work if You Can Get It.

Small, who will be reprising the role he played four years ago in the show’s regional premiere, is looking forward to the production: “I relish the opportunity to play this material in South Florida again,” Small says, “It’s a wonderful show for the area – the humor is timeless and South Florida audiences love to laugh. There are a lot of funny people down here. I got lost in Boca on Tuesday and couldn’t find my way back to the highway. I saw a man walking on the sidewalk, so I pulled over and put down my window. I hollered, ‘how do you get to 95?’ He looked at me and said, ‘Don’t eat meat!’”

“Old Jews Telling Jokes is one of the funniest scripts I’ve read in a very long time…simply because of the number of laughs – one right after another,” the show’s director Jeremy Quinn says. “When I first read it, I found myself laughing out loud…loudly. I’m sure they heard me in Cleveland. You certainly don’t have to be Jewish to appreciate and relate to the humor or the funny stories; but the style of the writing absolutely lends itself to the Catskills comedy shows of yesteryear. And with the addition of projections and musical numbers, this show is NOT just “stand-up”. It’s also quite touching from time to time – a perfect balance.

“I’m quite fortunate to be working with a cast who inherently gets the timing and delivery necessary for this script,” he continues. “That is a HUGE advantage and not something easily taught. Two out of five actors have done the show before, so we’re blessed to have their performance experience alongside us during the rehearsal process.

“Throughout my 38-year career in theatre (as both an actor and director), the one thing that is consistently the most rewarding, is the sound of laughter when a joke is perfectly delivered and lands with open arms around the entire audience. For me,” Quinn says, “applause is secondary to the sound of even one person laughing…it’s the gauge of a job well done. But put 200 or more people laughing together, experiencing the same relatable, LIVE experience for 90 minutes; and it’s an unforgettable symphony of pleasure for everyone involved. Who could ask for anything more? Ok, yes…maybe whirled peas.”

Old Jews Telling Jokes will open on January 9, 2019 at The Mizner Park Cultural Arts Center in Boca Raton. The theatre is located at 201 Plaza Real (2^nd Floor), in Boca Raton (33432)

PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL: The PGA Arts Center will present I Will Survive: Soundtracks of the 70’s beginning October 18th. The production will run through November 19^th at the increasingly popular Palm Beach Gardens venue.

When award-winning vocalist Mimi J. sought to develop a show about the women of soul who influenced her, she immediately turned to her good friend, Carbonell Award-nominated director/choreographer Kevin Black. They tossed around a number of ideas, but they kept coming back to the music of the 70s – music they both love. Together they came up with the concept, a title, and the song choices for what was then called On the Radio: Sounds of the 70s. The show opened at Stage Door Theatre in Margate in June 2014 to rave reviews.

What had evolved was an evening of unforgettable songs from an unforgettable decade of music produced by an array of artists from ABBA to Carly Simon, to Gladys Knight, John Lennon, and ZZ Top. Now called I Will Survive – The Soundtracks of the 70s, the show is a rousing trip down memory lane – back to the time of bell bottoms, mood rings, smiley faces, and memorable music. Among the songs that will be featured in the show are “Close to You”, “Car Wash”, “Dancing Queen”, “Let it Be”, “Nobody Does It Better”, “Proud Mary”, “Midnight Train to Georgia”, “Hopelessly Devoted”, and “I Will Survive”.

“The challenge,” Black says, “was to try to figure out how to keep it interesting. Because we didn’t want audiences to think the show is going to be two hours of Disco. It’s definitely not!”

“Kevin and I go to the theatre together a lot,” Mimi explains. “And I’ve never seen anything like what we did with this show – we’re really excited about it.

Along with the name change, the show itself has been tweaked and updated:

“We also felt there was a need to get another experience out there… to diversify the community,” Mimi continues. “This show introduces diversity and ethnicity. We’re using local talent, and creating a different look and vibe on the stage for our community. Audiences are going to feel that Soul Train vibe when they’re sitting in their seats… if they can stay in their seats! Most of our audiences end up dancing!”

Two talented dancers will join Mimi on stage.

Mimi J. was born and raised in Miami. She is a professional singer currently performing in the South Florida tri-county area, and has been the recipient of numerous awards in vocal performance. She received her degrees in Musical Theater from the University of Central Florida Conservatory Theater in Orlando, where she attended on the Walt Disney Scholarship. Mimi has been a member of the gospel recording group, Revelation S.E.E.D. founded and led by Margaret Reynolds of KC and the Sunshine Band, and has sung background for a number of award-winning artists including Gloria Estefan, Bobby McFerrin, Betty Wright, Ralph Tresvant and Johnny Gill of the R&B group New Edition, and Quan Howell of the gospel group Sounds of Blackness. Some of her regional theatre and Broadway National and International Tour credits include Ain’t Misbehavin’, Smokey Joe’s Café, Fame, Nunsense, and Rent. Mimi was the first woman of color to play Teen Angel in the classic 70’s hit, Grease during the show’s Pan-Asian tour.

The PGA Arts Center was a welcome addition to the South Florida theatrical scene when it opened in January 2017 with a production of WaistWatchers The Musical! Subsequent productions included Brad Zimmerman’s My Son the Waiter – A Jewish Tragedy, Tommy Koenig’s Baby Boomer Baby, Funny Old Broads, and The Kosher Cheer Leader.

The theatre’s 2017-2018 season promises to be filled with music and laughter: Following I Will Survive, Alan Jacobson’s Irving Berlin Salutes America will open on November 30^th and run through December 24^th. Avi Hoffman will bring his popular show Avi Hoffman’s Too Jewish? to the theatre beginning December 27^th, and two special New Year’s Eve Champagne Celebration performances starring Avery Sommers, Melissa Jacobson, and John Lariviere are planned for December 31^st– one at 7 pm and one at 9:30 pm. Other upcoming productions include Old Jews Telling Jokes (January 17 – March 4), Cooking with the Calamari Sisters (January 25 – March 18), and Raunchy Little Musical – Belle Barth is Back (March 2018).

I Will Survive will run from October 18 to November 19 at The PGA Arts Center in Palm Beach Gardens. The theatre is located at 4076 PGA Boulevard in Palm Beach Gardens (33410).

Old Jews Telling Jokes showcases five actors in a comedy that pays tribute to and reinvents classic jokes of the past and present. It celebrates the rich tradition of Jewish humor “and all the rabbis, complaining wives, fed-up husbands, patience-challenged physicians, gossiping ladies and competitive men” populating it. The Rocky Horror Show is an outrageous assemblage of – and humorous tribute to – the most stereotypical science fiction and horror movies, Marvel comics, Frankie Avalon/Annette Funicello outings and rock ‘n’ roll of every vintage. When Eric Spiegelman and his partner Tim Williams asked film and television producer Sam Hoffman if he had any ideas for an internet website, he pitched the concept of Old Jews Telling Jokes. Millions of views, shares, and guffaws later, Hoffman – in collaboration with Peter Gethers and Daniel Okrent, brought his Old Jews to Off-Broadway for an extremely successful run at the Westside Theatre.

Mazel Musicals, Inc. award winning producer Lawrence Toppall in association with Derrell Bunn and the Broward Stage Door Theatre will launch the Florida tour of Old Jews Telling Jokes at the Broward Stage Door Theater beginning Saturday, November 1^st.

The show, which has been called a “pickle-barrel full of giggles”, showcases five actors in a revue-type production that pays tribute to and reinvents classic jokes of the past and present. It celebrates the rich tradition of Jewish humor “and all the rabbis, complaining wives, fed-up husbands, patience-challenged physicians, gossiping ladies and competitive men” populating it. The humor can be suggestive (sometimes even raunchy) as the ‘Old Jews’ make fun of themselves as well as followers of every other religion.

“I attribute [Old Jews Telling Jokes’] success to a number of factors,” says Hoffman. “It’s funny. We launched …in [2009] the year when the recession was nearly at its worst and I think people really liked having something fun to download…. it celebrates older people with no irony, and I think that’s a fairly unusual commodity in popular entertainment.”

Toppall and Bunn have chosen Peter J. Loewy to direct the production, which will feature Ashley Brooks, Gail Byer, Adam Chisnall, Ben Prayz, and Michael Small.

Loewy is no stranger to the South Florida Theatre scene, having directed several Broward Stage Door Theatre productions including his own musical The Kid from Brooklyn. “The material, the premise, the humor, and this cast are a terrific combination,” he says. “This show is going to appeal to every audience, I guarantee it. Age, ethnicity, attitude – none of it matters – because laughter transcends it all.”

Old Jews Telling Jokes will open on November 1, 2014 at The Broward Stage Door Theatre in Coral Springs. The theatre is located at 8036 Sample Road, in Coral Springs.

Pigs Do Fly Productions will hold two readings of humorous short plays at Coral Gables’ Books & Books on January 25th and February 1st.

The award-winning company commissioned top South Florida playwrights Michael McKeever and Michael Leeds to write for them, and their plays are among those scheduled to be read.

And several months ago Pigs Do Fly Productions also put out a call to playwrights from across the United States for submissions of 10-minute contemporary comedies written to highlight “vibrant, healthy people over 50 who are doing interesting things with their lives”. Over 300 plays were submitted and a committee of 6 took on the task of reading and rating each one. The plays that will be read were rated the highest of the lot, and audiences will be asked for their input and their opinions at the end of each reading. The top five selections, along with the plays by McKeever and Leeds will form Pigs Do Fly’s next production, scheduled to take place in May at Andrews Living Arts.

Five Guys Named Moe (December 10 to January 18, 2015, Theatre 2) is a musical with a book by Clarke Peters and lyrics and music by Louis Jordan. Nomax, whose girlfriend has left him and who is without money, finds Big Moe, Four-Eyed Moe, Eat Moe, No Moe, and Little Moe emerging from his 1930s-style radio to comfort him. They sing the hit songs of songwriter and saxophonist Jordan, whose new slant on jazz paved the way for rock and roll in the 1950s. Five Guys Named Moe is ‘an exhilarating, all-embracing theatrical experience, complete with some uproarious audience participation that’ll have spectators leaping out of their seats to join the celebration!’

I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change (February 6 to March 7, 2015, Theatre 2) In this clever two act musical, songwriters Joe DiPietro (book and lyrics) and Jimmy Roberts (music) offer a series of vignettes connected by the central theme of love and relationships. The play’s tagline is “Everything you have ever secretly thought about dating, romance, marriage, lovers, husbands, wives, and in-laws, but were afraid to admit.” I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change is the second longest running off-Broadway musical in history.

John Peterson will return to the Stage Door Theatre in George M. Cohen Tonight! (March 20 to April 26, 2015, Theatre 2) an upbeat one-man play about the beloved song and dance man George M. Cohan – capturing in 95 fast-moving minutes the essence of the man, his music, and the fabulous era of show business he came up in. A dazzling showcase for a song-and-dance man with flair. Peterson, who has received rave reviews everywhere he has performed this show, channels a swift, colorful portrayal of this most fiercely American musical figure. Peterson, played the Emcee in a recent Broadway revival of Cabaret, starred in Stage Door’s production of Song Man Dance Man two years ago.

Bell, Book, and Candle (May 15 to June 21, 2015, Theatre 2) In this fun and sexy romantic comedy, we meet Gillian Holroyd, a beautiful and lively free spirit – who also happens to be a witch. Frustrated by a lack of romance in her life and smitten by her handsome neighbor, she “helps things along” by casting a spell. But will she give into the one thing that will take away her magical powers forever? One of John van Druten’s greatest comedy successes, Bell, Book, and Candle has been called “…completely enchanting—a wonderfully suave and impish fantasy.” (New York Times).

Only it’s not one thin mattress we’re talking about here, it’s thirteen mattresses, four feather comforters, and eight queen-size pillows! And not only that, but Jasmine wears ear muffs, a night mask, and is very, very tired! Does Jasmine pass the extremely unfair princess test? A comic jester, a rather confused king and a pompous announcer add to the merriment.

Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack (and his beanstalk), and the Witch—meet and interact in this whimsical original story. The musical centers on a baker and his wife who wish to have a child; Cinderella, who wishes to attend the king’s festival; and Jack, who wishes his cow would give milk.

The story itself deals with John Jasper, a Jekyll-and-Hyde choirmaster who is quite madly in love with his music student, the fair Miss Rosa Bud. Now, Miss Bud is, in turn, engaged to Jasper’s nephew, young Edwin Drood. Our title character disappears mysteriously one stormy Christmas Eve – but has Edwin Drood been murdered? And if so, then whodunnit?

A Florida premiere is the centerpiece of a well rounded theatrical season at the popular Coral Springs Theatre

The Broward Stage Door Theatre has announced its line-up of productions for 2014-2015. For its 21^st season the company, headed by Derelle Bunn and Dave Torres has planned an exciting mix of comedies, musicals, and straight plays that will appeal to their broad base of theatre patrons.

Stage Door’s season begins in August with Leonard Gershe’s award-winning play Butterflies are Free (August 1^st – September 14^th, Theatre 1). The play’s plot revolves around a Manhattan blind man whose controlling mother disapproves of his relationship with a free-spirited hippie. The title was inspired by a passage in Charles Dickens’ Bleak House: “I only ask to be free. The butterflies are free. Mankind will surely not deny to Harold Skimpole what it concedes to the butterflies.”

The Last Romance (October 10^th – November 23^rd, Theatre 2) by New Jersey born and raised Joe DiPietro, is set in Hoboken, New Jersey. The play is a warm, tender, and very funny tale of late love between two senior citizens. “The play adroitly explores relationships between men and women in their golden years, as well as how the invisible ties of family often tie our hearts harder and faster than any love affair. A tale that mixes heartbreak with its humor and opera with the laughter…” (Naples News) DiPietro is also the author of I Love You You’re Perfect Now Change, Memphis (2010 Tony-award winner for Best Musical), All Shook Up, The Toxic Avenger and Over the River and Through the Woods, which will run this April 4^th through May 11^th as part of Stage Door’s current season.

Securing the rights to of Old Jews Telling Jokes was a real coup for Stage Door. “We are delighted to get the Florida Premiere of Old Jews Telling Jokes,” says Bunn. “It played in New York and Chicago and sold out for long runs.” Old Jews Telling Jokes is scheduled to open November 1^st, and run through January 4^th (Theatre 1), “But we wouldn’t be surprised if audiences demand it stays longer!” says Bunn. Initially a popular website, this revue has been described as “a pickle-barrelful of giggles.” It celebrates the rich tradition of Jewish humor “and all the rabbis, complaining wives, fed-up husbands, patience-challenged physicians, gossiping ladies and competitive men” populating it.
