LAUDERHILL, FL:  The Lauderhill Performing Arts Center (LPAC) has partnered with Prather Productions to produce an exciting new musical theatre series, Broadway in Broward, at the state-of-the art venue beginning in November 2019. Four productions are planned for the 2019-2020 season:  West Side Story, Once, Kinky Boots, and Beauty and the Beast.

Prather Productions includes Broadway Palm in Fort Myers, Florida (now in its 26th season), and Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre in Lancaster, Pennsylvania (now in its 31st season), along with Prather Touring and Apex Touring.

“I have been producing theatre year-round in Florida for over 26 years and am most notably known for Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre on the west coast in Fort Myers,” Will Prather, Prather Productions owner and Executive Producer said recently. “While I have also produced national and international tours, it has been a goal of mine to have a consistent presence on the east coast of Florida. The opportunity to partner with LPAC couldn’t have come at a better time, and all of us at Prather Productions are extremely excited to bring together our creative team and the incredible local talent that the east coast of Florida has to offer.”

LPAC General Manager Amanda Segur agrees: “I am thrilled to be a part of the team working to bring Broadway musicals back to the LPAC stage,” she says. “Working with Prather Productions is going to be an exciting, creative, artistic adventure, and the City of Lauderhill is extremely pleased to have forged this new relationship.  We are all looking forward to our very first Broadway in Broward show series, which will be full of magical music, delightful dance and amazing acting, starring award winning performers from South Florida, New York and across the nation!”

The Lauderhill Performing Arts Center has hosted numerous theatrical events and productions since it opened its doors in January 2016 and has grown its audiences to include theatre patrons from not only Broward County, but Miami/Dade and Palm Beach counties as well.

West Side Story will run from November 14th– December 1st; Once from December 5th – 22nd; Kinky Boots from January 23rd – February 9th; and Beauty and the Beast from February 20th – March 8th.

August 7, 2018:

LAUDERHILL, FL:  Stage Door Theatre’s first production at Lauderhill Performing Arts Center (LPAC), their brand new, state-of-the-art home, will be the multiple Tony Award-winning La Cage Aux Folles.   The production will open on August 31st and run through September 23rd.   (The theatre will celebrate the move to their new home at a Gala Party on September 1st – details to be announced.)

After twenty years of un-wedded bliss, Georges and Albin, two men partnered for better-or-worse experience a bit of both when Georges’ son (fathered during a one-night fling) announces his impending marriage to the daughter of a bigoted, right-wing politician.  Further complicating the situation is the ‘family business’: Albin and Georges run a drag nightclub in St. Tropez, where Albin is the ‘star’ performer, ZaZa.

The musical, based on the French play by Jean Poiret, was adapted for the stage by Broadway royalty – Harvey Fierstein wrote the book, and Jerry Herman provided the music and lyrics.  The original production received nine Tony nominations, and won six, including Best Musical, Best Score, and Best Book.  It is the first musical to win the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical twice.

Carbonell nominee (as both actor and director) Bruce Linser will direct the production: “I see this show as somewhat of a period piece,” Linser explains. “It is set in the 70s, a time when gay people and drag queens were still fighting to come out of the shadows. This story of a young straight man forcing his parents to change themselves and their lives so drastically – or these two gay men being willing to suffer that humiliation so willingly – would seem ridiculous or even downright hateful today. Not that gay people aren’t still marginalized. With lawsuits around gay wedding cakes and “religious freedom” laws, there is definitely a culture of fear and hatred for the LGBT community, and there are looming signs of it being allowed to grow under the current administration in Washington DC. So in a way this production of this show at this time is a bit of a warning. “Those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it”, as they say. We need to remember where we’ve been, so we can prevent ourselves from going there again in the future. And that’s for all of us – gay and straight alike. What we need right now is empathy and understanding for each other, and what better way to explore that than through the joy and thoughtfulness that is musical theatre?

“To that end, we are following much more of the style of the most recent revival of the show,” he continues.  “Harvey Fierstein, who wrote the book to La Cage, has said that the original production, while glamorous and beautiful, wasn’t really “right” for the world of the play. It was glitzed and glittered up for Broadway, in large part to make it palatable and acceptable for the Broadway audience at the time. And it worked – it’s a beloved, Tony-winning show, gay relationships now enjoy widespread support and acceptance, and drag queens have their own TV shows! Which is why we can now take that shiny veneer off of the show, at least a little bit, so we can explore more of the darker truth that the original movie and show were revealing. Don’t get me wrong – there will still be gorgeous costumes and fabulous dance numbers. It’s a musical, after all! But we’re also looking for the heart and soul underneath all of that … the fear and love that drives these people to be who they are and do what they do. The humanity of these characters and their relationships. That, to me, makes for interesting, powerful, and entertaining theatre.”

Linser has assembled a top-notch cast to populate the Riviera town of St. Tropez:  Larry Buzzeo will play Albin/ZaZa, and Jamie Parnell will play Georges.  2017 Carbonell Award-winner Elijah Word will play Jacob, and Connor Delves will play Jean-Michel.  Dalia Aleman and James Skiba, who recently starred in Stage Door’s production of Victor/Victoria will also be featured. Other cast members include 2017 Carbonell nominee Kat Gold, Alexandra Van Hasselt, JR Coley, Rebeca Diaz, Sean Davis, Nicole Kinzel, Kevin Lozano, Courtney Poston, Dyllan Vallier, Stephen Hohendorf, Korey Harlow, Jonathan Eisele, Johanna Moise, and Cat Pagano.

Paul Reekie will serve as the production’s Musical Director; Choreography is by Danny Durr, and the show’s Assistant Choreographer is Jenny Hegarty.  Scenic Design is by Michael McLain; Lighting Design is by Ardean Landhuis; Sound Design is by King Raymonvil; and Costumes are by Jerry Sturdevant.  The production’s Stage Manager is Nancy Clay.

La Cage Aux Folles will run from August 31 to September 24 at Stage Door Theatre’s new location, the Lauderhill Performing Arts Center (LPAC). The theatre is located at 3800 NW 11th Place, Lauderhill (33311), in the Central Broward Regional Park on the North East corner of Sunrise Boulevard and 441 (State Road 7).

Tickets for La Cage Aux Folles (and for all Stage Door productions) will remain at $48. (LPAC will charge $5 service fee per ticket, however if a package of four Stage Door shows is purchased the service fees will be waived.) Group rates are available, as are student prices (with valid ID). MARGATE, FL:  Stage Door Theatre is on the move! The award-winning theatre company has been awarded an exclusive contract to mount their productions at the Lauderhill Performing Arts Center beginning in September 2018.

“This is such a great opportunity for us!” Stage Door’s Executive Producer Derelle (Dee) Bunn enthuses.  “It’s the perfect 25th Anniversary gift!  LPAC is a brand new modern and up-to-date facility – it has everything we need and more.  Its main auditorium can be adjusted to become a more intimate space, or accommodate over 1100 patrons.  It has state of the art lighting and sound equipment, great dressing room space, and a lovely Green Room – things we’ve been missing for years!”

The timing is perfect for the well-regarded theatre company; their audience is growing, and their productions are becoming more elaborate. In fact, Bunn says, they’ve simply outgrown the building they have occupied for the past 25 years which is in great need of repairs.

“The timing for this opportunity couldn’t be better,” she explains. “Being at the Lauderhill Performing Arts Center will give us so much space to grow…  And we’ll even have outside signage!

“We’re going to finish our season at our current venue,” Bunn continues.  “Patrons can purchase their tickets through our box office or online – for this season’s productions at Stage Door in Margate or for next season’s shows at LPAC. We’re doing everything we can to make the transition as easy as possible for our patrons.  We’ve started telling our audiences about our move and their response has been absolutely 100% favorable.”

Stage Door Theatre will bring a solid background of award-winning theatrical productions and a roster of over 30,000 patrons to LPAC when they arrive in September.  The company was recently honored with three Carbonell Award nominations:  For Sarah Gracel as Best Actress in a Musical and Elijah Word for Best Supporting Actor in a Musical – both for Dreamgirls.  And Kat Gold scored a nomination as Best Supporting Actress in a Musical for the company’s production of Nine.

Bunn, along with Stage Door’s Associate Producer Kevin Black are looking forward to continuing to build upon the company’s already solid reputation, as well as grow their audience in the new venue.  “This move is a total win/win for everyone involved,” Black says.

Lauderhill Commissioner M. Margaret Bates is also excited about LPAC’s new residents. “We welcome Broward Stage Door Theatre Company and all of their patrons to our newly opened Lauderhill Performing Arts Center,” she says. “We look forward to their upcoming season of fantastic Broadway shows – we know they’ll love their new home!”

The Lauderhill Performing Arts Center’s mission is to provide diverse, quality arts programming to the City of Lauderhill and its neighboring communities.  The facility opened in January 2016 and is a LEED Silver Performing Arts Structure. (LEED certification provides independent verification of a building or neighborhood’s green features).

Stage Door Theatre is located at 8036 West Sample Road in Margate (33065).  Flashdance – The Musical is currently playing in the venue’s Theatre 1; Kevin Black’s Imagine – A Beatles Celebration will open in Theatre 2 on February 2nd.   For more information about Stage Door Theatre contact visit www.stagedoorfl.org or contact Derelle Bunn Executive Producer/Artistic Director, at DerelleBunn@yahoo.com / 954-344-7765 or Carol Kassie (carol@carolkassie.com / 561-445-9244).

The Lauderhill Performing Arts Center is located in the Central Broward Regional Park on the Northeast corner of Sunrise Boulevard and State Road 7.  For more information about LPAC visit http://lpacfl.com.

2015 Summer Theatre Fest Logo
MIAMI, FL:  The Theatre League’s Summer Theatre Fest has become an integral part of South Florida’s cultural landscape, and this year, South Florida audiences will once again have the opportunity to see theatre for free, check out new plays in development by South Florida playwrights, and tell the world what the arts – and theatre – mean to them.  The success of last summer’s Come Under Our Umbrella program and play reading series indicated to the League that theatre patrons are ready and willing to try new theatrical experiences, and even cross county lines to do it.

The theme governing this year’s Summer Theatre Fest activities is Step Onto Our Stage.  A unique ‘step and repeat’ has been created especially for the program, featuring theatrical curtains in front of a wall imprinted with the League’s logo.  Patrons will be invited to Step Onto Our Stage to be photographed or videoed ‘on stage’ as they are interviewed about their theatrical experiences, and the significance of the arts in their lives.  The step and repeat, which made its ‘debut’ at the South Florida Theatre League sponsored Carbonell Awards ‘after party’, will travel to participating theatres throughout the summer.

Summer Theatre Fest:  Each Monday from June 1 to August 31, a South Florida Theatre League member theatre will host a reading of a new play by a local playwright. Playwrights range from established local favorites, including Carbonell Award-winners and nominees, to emerging talents, with plays vastly ranging in subject matter and style. For more details, including a synopsis of each reading, please visit www.southfloridatheatre.com.

Free Night of Theater is an audience development program that has proved to be immensely popular since the League first introduced it in 2008. Free Night offers patrons an excellent opportunity to visit a venue they’ve never been to before, or sample a type of theatre they might not otherwise ever consider. Developed by the Theatre Communications Group (the national organization for American Theatre) about a decade ago to increase audiences, subsequent studies found that approximately 42% of patrons who attend a Free Night of Theatre return to that theatre and purchase tickets.  So far, participating theatres include Actors’ Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre, Palm Beach Dramaworks, and Evening Star Productions, however several more theatres are expected to participate.

Patrons can sign up for tickets at summerfestfreenight.southfloridatheatre.com starting on June 10 for performances during the month of July. The window to enter the lottery will close on June 24, and patrons will find out if they have won tickets on June 29.

The South Florida Theatre League is “an alliance of theatrical organizations and professionals dedicated to nurturing, promoting, and advocating for the growth and prestige of the South Florida theatre industry”.  To date, the League is the umbrella organization for close to 80 theatres between Key West and Jupiter.

When Eric Spiegelman and his partner Tim Williams asked film and television producer Sam Hoffman if he had any ideas for an internet website, he pitched the concept of Old Jews Telling Jokes. Millions of views, shares, and guffaws later, Hoffman – in collaboration with Peter Gethers and Daniel Okrent, brought his Old Jews to Off-Broadway for an extremely successful run at the Westside Theatre.

Mazel Musicals, Inc. award winning producer Lawrence Toppall in association with Derrell Bunn and the Broward Stage Door Theatre will launch the Florida tour of Old Jews Telling Jokes at the Broward Stage Door Theater beginning Saturday, November 1st.

The show, which has been called a “pickle-barrel full of giggles”, showcases five actors in a revue-type production that pays tribute to and reinvents classic jokes of the past and present. It celebrates the rich tradition of Jewish humor “and all the rabbis, complaining wives, fed-up husbands, patience-challenged physicians, gossiping ladies and competitive men” populating it. The humor can be suggestive (sometimes even raunchy) as the ‘Old Jews’ make fun of themselves as well as followers of every other religion.

“I attribute [Old Jews Telling Jokes’] success to a number of factors,” says Hoffman. “It’s funny. We launched …in [2009] the year when the recession was nearly at its worst and I think people really liked having something fun to download…. it celebrates older people with no irony, and I think that’s a fairly unusual commodity in popular entertainment.”

Toppall and Bunn have chosen Peter J. Loewy to direct the production, which will feature Ashley Brooks, Gail Byer, Adam Chisnall, Ben Prayz, and Michael Small.

Loewy is no stranger to the South Florida Theatre scene, having directed several Broward Stage Door Theatre productions including his own musical The Kid from Brooklyn. “The material, the premise, the humor, and this cast are a terrific combination,” he says. “This show is going to appeal to every audience, I guarantee it. Age, ethnicity, attitude – none of it matters – because laughter transcends it all.”

Old Jews Telling Jokes will open on November 1, 2014 at The Broward Stage Door Theatre in Coral Springs. The theatre is located at 8036 Sample Road, in Coral Springs.

Tickets for Old Jews Telling Jokes are $44. Tickets may be purchased at the Broward Stage Door Theatre box office at 954-344-7765 or on line at http://www.stagedoorfl.org.

A Florida premiere is the centerpiece of a well rounded theatrical season at the popular Coral Springs Theatre

 openingpage-2-1

Coral Springs, FL, February 18th, 2014:

The Broward Stage Door Theatre has announced its line-up of productions for 2014-2015.  For its 21st season the company, headed by Derelle Bunn and Dave Torres has planned an exciting mix of comedies, musicals, and straight plays that will appeal to their broad base of theatre patrons.

Stage Door’s season begins in August with Leonard Gershe’s award-winningButterflies-are-Free ck play Butterflies are Free (August 1st – September 14th, Theatre 1). The play’s plot revolves around a Manhattan blind man whose controlling mother disapproves of his relationship with a free-spirited hippie. The title was inspired by a passage in Charles Dickens’ Bleak House: “I only ask to be free. The butterflies are free. Mankind will surely not deny to Harold Skimpole what it concedes to the butterflies.”

The Last Romance (October 10th – November 23rd, Theatre 2) by New Last Romance 1Jersey born and raised Joe DiPietro, is set in Hoboken, New Jersey.  The play is a warm, tender, and very funny tale of late love between two senior citizens. “The play adroitly explores relationships between men and women in their golden years, as well as how the invisible ties of family often tie our hearts harder and faster than any love affair. A tale that mixes heartbreak with its humor and opera with the laughter…” (Naples News) DiPietro is also the author of I Love You You’re Perfect Now Change, Memphis (2010 Tony-award winner for Best Musical), All Shook Up, The Toxic Avenger and Over the River and Through the Woods, which will run this April 4th through May 11th as  part of Stage Door’s current season.

Five Guys Named Moe (December 10 to January 18, 2015, Theatre 2) is aMoe logo 1 musical with a book by Clarke Peters and lyrics and music by Louis Jordan. Nomax, whose girlfriend has left him and who is without money, finds Big Moe, Four-Eyed Moe, Eat Moe, No Moe, and Little Moe emerging from his 1930s-style radio to comfort him. They sing the hit songs of songwriter and saxophonist Jordan, whose new slant on jazz paved the way for rock and roll in the 1950s. Five Guys Named Moe is ‘an exhilarating, all-embracing theatrical experience, complete with some uproarious audience participation that’ll have spectators leaping out of their seats to join the celebration!’

Securing the rights to of Old Jews Telling Jokes was a real coup for StageOJTJ - Logo Door.  “We are delighted to get the Florida Premiere of Old Jews Telling Jokes,” says Bunn.  “It played in New York and Chicago and sold out for long runs.”  Old Jews Telling Jokes is scheduled to open November 1st, and run through January 4th (Theatre 1), “But we wouldn’t be surprised if audiences demand it stays longer!” says Bunn. Initially a popular website, this revue has been described as “a pickle-barrelful of giggles.” It celebrates the rich tradition of Jewish humor “and all the rabbis, complaining wives, fed-up husbands, patience-challenged physicians, gossiping ladies and competitive men” populating it.

I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change (February 6 to March 7, 2015, ILYYPNC08-weblogoTheatre 2) In this clever two act musical, songwriters Joe DiPietro (book and lyrics) and Jimmy Roberts (music) offer a series of vignettes connected by the central theme of love and relationships. The play’s tagline is “Everything you have ever secretly thought about dating, romance, marriage, lovers, husbands, wives, and in-laws, but were afraid to admit.” I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change is the second longest running off-Broadway musical in history.

John Peterson will return to the Stage Door Theatre in George M. Cohen playbill_2269_23137839 copyTonight! (March 20 to April 26, 2015, Theatre 2) an upbeat one-man play about the beloved song and dance man George M. Cohan – capturing in 95 fast-moving minutes the essence of the man, his music, and the fabulous era of show business he came up in.  A dazzling showcase for a song-and-dance man with flair. Peterson, who has received rave reviews everywhere he has performed this show, channels a swift, colorful portrayal of this most fiercely American musical figure.  Peterson, played the Emcee in a recent Broadway revival of Cabaret, starred in Stage Door’s production of Song Man Dance Man two years ago.

Bell, Book, and Candle (May 15 to June 21, 2015, Theatre 2) In this fun bbc-logo4and sexy romantic comedy, we meet Gillian Holroyd, a beautiful and lively free spirit – who also happens to be a witch. Frustrated by a lack of romance in her life and smitten by her handsome neighbor, she “helps things along” by casting a spell. But will she give into the one thing that will take away her magical powers forever? One of John van Druten’s greatest comedy successes, Bell, Book, and Candle has been called “…completely enchanting—a wonderfully suave and impish fantasy.” (New York Times).
