Steve Solomon will bring his new hit show, Cannoli, Latkes & Guilt…The Therapy Continues… to The Delray Beach Center for the Arts’ Crest Theatre on January 3^rd and 4^th, 2015, and to the Lyric Theatre in Stuart on January 6^th, 2015. Cannoli… is a perfect showcase for Solomon’s impressive comedic talent, his inimitable story-telling ability, and his funny and clever facility with words, accents, and sounds. The show is full of new stories – those familiar with Solomon’s earlier productions know his family consistently provides him with a goldmine of humor and humorous situations – as well as a compilation of some of the best of his earlier work. His previous shows include My Mother’s Italian, My Father’s Jewish & I’m in Therapy, My Mother’s Italian, My Father’s Jewish & I’m STILL in Therapy, and Steve’s Holiday Show (and his personal favorite) My Mother’s Italian, My Father’s Jewish …. & I’m Home For the Holidays.

Steve Solomon’s humor is universal, and universally loved. Enhanced by his talent for impersonation and his mastery of different dialects – he does approximately 20 different characters and voices in his shows – his stories about his mixed heritage Italian/Jewish family resonate with everyone, no matter what their ethnicity, and have delighted and entertained audiences for over 4000 performances.

And as Solomon will tell you himself – he’s politically incorrect:
“Of course I am! My entire family is politically incorrect; and that’s what helps make the shows so funny. The very fact that we can go out to the theatre and spend an evening laughing at ourselves—and the antics of others – without fear of repercussion helps make this the great country it is!”

He will also tell you his shows are full of stereotypes:
“Yep,” he says, in answer to his ‘politically correct’ critics “That was my life; stereotypical Italian and Jewish aunts who spent the entire day in house dresses stirring sauces and soup. Maybe they were stereotypes, but they were – they are – my family, and I’m only describing what I know… and love!

“In fact,” he continues, “Not once, in the 12 years my plays have been touring, have I ever received a complaint from a patron about how offended they were – indeed it’s usually the opposite. I get dozens of e-mails and letters thanking me for the show and saying, ‘….that was my uncle….’ Or, ‘you nailed my Mom….’” Or “…I think we grew up in the same house…”

Steve Solomon epitomizes the word ‘multifaceted’. He is an accomplished pianist, composer, and lyricist; a member of MENSA, a painter and cartoonist (all his show logos are his own creations); a teacher – he has two Master’s degrees and an SDA and ABD degree in education and taught physics in Long Island, New York (where he eventually became Assistant to the Superintendent of Schools); and according to his wife he can fix anything except, according to Solomon, the way certain seniors drive in South Florida!

Pigs Do Fly Productions will hold two readings of humorous short plays at Coral Gables’ Books & Books on January 25th and February 1st.

The award-winning company commissioned top South Florida playwrights Michael McKeever and Michael Leeds to write for them, and their plays are among those scheduled to be read.

And several months ago Pigs Do Fly Productions also put out a call to playwrights from across the United States for submissions of 10-minute contemporary comedies written to highlight “vibrant, healthy people over 50 who are doing interesting things with their lives”. Over 300 plays were submitted and a committee of 6 took on the task of reading and rating each one. The plays that will be read were rated the highest of the lot, and audiences will be asked for their input and their opinions at the end of each reading. The top five selections, along with the plays by McKeever and Leeds will form Pigs Do Fly’s next production, scheduled to take place in May at Andrews Living Arts.

I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change (February 6 to March 7, 2015, Theatre 2) In this clever two act musical, songwriters Joe DiPietro (book and lyrics) and Jimmy Roberts (music) offer a series of vignettes connected by the central theme of love and relationships. The play’s tagline is “Everything you have ever secretly thought about dating, romance, marriage, lovers, husbands, wives, and in-laws, but were afraid to admit.” I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change is the second longest running off-Broadway musical in history.

John Peterson will return to the Stage Door Theatre in George M. Cohen Tonight! (March 20 to April 26, 2015, Theatre 2) an upbeat one-man play about the beloved song and dance man George M. Cohan – capturing in 95 fast-moving minutes the essence of the man, his music, and the fabulous era of show business he came up in. A dazzling showcase for a song-and-dance man with flair. Peterson, who has received rave reviews everywhere he has performed this show, channels a swift, colorful portrayal of this most fiercely American musical figure. Peterson, played the Emcee in a recent Broadway revival of Cabaret, starred in Stage Door’s production of Song Man Dance Man two years ago.

Bell, Book, and Candle (May 15 to June 21, 2015, Theatre 2) In this fun and sexy romantic comedy, we meet Gillian Holroyd, a beautiful and lively free spirit – who also happens to be a witch. Frustrated by a lack of romance in her life and smitten by her handsome neighbor, she “helps things along” by casting a spell. The overbearing Queen has already determined whom her precious sonny boy, Prince Handsome, will marry. So when a muddy and very dirty Princess Jasmine catches the Prince’s eye unexpectedly, the Queen insists she pass the “pea under the mattress” test to prove she really is a princess. Only it’s not one thin mattress we’re talking about here, it’s thirteen mattresses, four feather comforters, and eight queen-size pillows! And not only that, but Jasmine wears ear muffs, a night mask, and is very, very tired! Does Jasmine pass the extremely unfair princess test? A comic jester, a rather confused king and a pompous announcer add to the merriment.

The Mystery of Edwin Drood

Steve Solomon has a busy South Florida winter ahead. He will perform his Stand Up comedy at the Lyric Theatre in Stuart, on December 3^rd; a prequel to his wildly successful My Mother’s Italian, My Father’s Jewish, & I’m in Therapy aptly and appropriately called My Mother’s Italian, My Father’s Jewish & I’m STILL in Therapy…the Chaos Continues… will play from December 18^th through December 22^nd at the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts – returning there by popular demand after last year’s sold out run; and his new show, Cannoli, Latkes & Guilt! The Therapy Continues… will open at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts and run from February 5^th through February 16^th.

Solomon’s humor is universal, and universally loved. Enhanced by his talent for impersonation and his mastery of different dialects – he does approximately 20 different characters and voices in his shows – his stories about his mixed heritage Italian/Jewish family resonate with everyone, no matter what their ethnicity, and have had audiences in stitches for over 3200 performances. In fact his recent performances of Still in Therapy broke all box office and attendance records in the 28 year history of the Bristol Riverside Theatre in Philadelphia.

And as Solomon will tell you himself – he’s politically incorrect:
“Of course I am! My entire family is politically incorrect; and that’s what helps make the shows so funny. The very fact that we can go out to the theatre a spend an evening laughing at ourselves—and the antics of others – without fear of pending imprisonment helps make this the great country it is – or used to be before the hordes of the politically correct police came banging on our doors.”

He will also tell you his shows are full of stereotypes:
“Yep,” he says, in answer to his ‘politically correct’ critics “That was my life; stereotypical Italian and Jewish aunts who spent the entire day in house dresses stirring sauces and soup. Since I’m describing my family as they were, why should anyone be offended by the stereotypes I portray when the people who ARE the stereotypes don’t get offended?

“In fact,” he continues, “Not once, in the 11 years my plays have been touring, have I ever received a complaint from a patron about how offended they were – indeed it’s usually the opposite. I get dozens of e-mails and letters thanking me for the show and saying, ‘….that was my uncle….’ Or, ‘you nailed my Mom….’” “…I think we grew up in the same house…”

Steve Solomon epitomizes the phrase ‘multi-faceted’. He is an accomplished pianist, composer, and lyricist; a member of MENSA, a painter and cartoonist (all his show logos are his own creations); a teacher – he has two Master’s degrees and an SDA and ABD degree in education and taught physics in Long Island, New York (where he eventually became Assistant to the Superintendent of Schools); and according to his wife he can fix anything except, according to Solomon, the way certain seniors drive in South Florida!

Solomon, who lives in Boynton Beach, is extremely happy to be performing again in his own ‘stomping grounds’: “Why do I come back to the Kravis Center or the Lyric or Coral Springs? The people! South Florida has some of the most sophisticated and delicious audiences in the country—they love to laugh and I love to perform for them. It’s that simple!”

South Florida theatre is thriving. At last count, the Theatre League of South Florida reported a membership of 58 theatres, with several new production companies waiting in the wings to join.

The 2013-2014 South Florida theatre season promises to be more exciting than ever. Theatre companies have chosen a wide variety of plays – traditional and non – to populate their many stages, and audiences will have the opportunity to sample everything from Broadway classics and award-winning dramas to rock operas, madcap comedies, and children’s theatre.

Although many are familiar with the larger venues in the area – The Broward Center for the Performing Arts, The Kravis Center for the Performing Arts, and Miami’s Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, there are a number of excellent smaller, interesting, and reasonably priced local theatres definitely worth visiting.

Boca Raton hosts several well respected theatre companies. The award-winning Women’s Theatre Project and the Boca Raton Theatre Guild both operate out of the Willow Theatre at Sugar Sand Park. This state of the art theatre seats 155 patrons. There is ample parking available, and the surrounding park is a delightful setting for a pre-theatre picnic. This year, the two companies have joined forces to offer patrons the opportunity to purchase subscriptions to their productions. For a total of $99, patrons can attend four plays – two musicals produced by the Boca Raton Theatre Guild, and two plays presented by the Women’s Theatre Project.

The Boca Raton Theatre Guild will also team with Peter J. Loewy this season, and together they will co-produce Respect: A Musical Journey of Women at the Mizner Park Cultural Arts Center. Respect originated in South Florida, and Loewy was not only its first director, but one of the prime developers of the ever-popular show.

Parade Productions is one of Boca Raton’s newer companies. Their mission, “to produce high quality theatre experiences that entertain, enlighten inform, uplift and inspire”, is reflected in their choice of plays. This season’s production, The Last Schwartz has been praised as being ‘rollicking, sad, shocking, goofy, and thoughtful…’ Their home, at the Mizner Park Cultural Arts Center’s Studio Theatre, is easily accessible, and free, metered, or valet parking is available.

Sol Children Theatre offers theatre for the entire family. Now entering their 11^th year, this company of young performers, under the direction and guidance of Rosalie Grant, produces a number of quality productions each year. Located on Federal Highway just south of Spanish River Boulevard, Sol is a small black box theatre. It seats 77, including child sized front row seating for their younger audiences. This year they are debuting a new production company, Evening Star Productions, which will focus on plays for more for mature audiences, and feature adult, professional actors, as well as young people working towards a career in theatre.

For those who would venture north to Delray Beach, Entr’Acte Theatrix will follow up this past summer’s highly successful production of Monty Python’s Spamalot with The Who’s Tommy at the Delray Beach Center for the Arts at Old School Square.

Steve Solomon will bring his comedic recollections back to the The Lyric Theatre, The Kravis Center for the Performing Arts, and the Coral Springs Center for the Arts …And the Broward Stage Door Theatre in Coral Springs has a dozen productions planned between September 2013 and July 2014.

Below is a list, in chronological opening night order, of just some of the theatres, theatre companies, plays (and one musical group), that will be on stage this season, along with brief descriptions of each production. Brooklyn born, Boynton Beach resident Steve Solomon will perform in his three time award winning comedy MY MOTHER’S ITALIAN, MY FATHER’S JEWISH & I’M IN THERAPY! at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts for a limited 2-week engagement, March 14^th through March 25^th.

Solomon is very excited about coming back in Florida after hundreds of performances around the United States in 2011. As he puts it, “There’s nothing like a South Florida crowd…. After the show, you ask the audience how they’re doing and they all tell you!”

MY MOTHER’S ITALIAN, MY FATHER’S JEWISH & I’M IN THERAPY! will reach another production milestone in 2012—Two Thousand performances spanning dozens of states, Canada, South Africa and (in October) Australia.

Solomon has added a lot of new material to spice up the Coral Springs production, and is looking forward to appearing in his own play in his home state: “Sure I’m delighted with how my other actors play the part around the country,” Solomon says. “But South Florida is MY home, and these are MY friends and neighbors. This way if I don’t please them, they can knock on my door and complain personally.”

Described as “One part lasagna, one part kreplach, and two parts Prozac,” you don’t have to be Jewish or Italian to love this show. All you need is to know what it feels like to leave a family dinner with heartburn and a headache.
