BOCA RATON, FL: When Judy Garland stepped out onto the stage at Carnegie Hall on April 23, 1961, the raucous standing ovation that greeted her was just the start of what has been called “the greatest night in showbusiness history.”  Award-winning actress/singer Jody Briskey will channel Garland and recreate that night’s iconic performance in Garland in Word and Song at the Willow Theatre in Sugar Sand Park.  The production, produced by Black Box Booking (The Jazz Singer, Danny Kaye & Sylvia), will run from January 26th through February 11th.

Judy Garland was a mega-star before the term was coined.  She made her first film appearance at age 7, and during her career earned three Oscar nominations, the first for what is listed by the American Film Institute as the 6th best film of all time – The Wizard of Oz.   Over the years she progressed from movies to Vaudeville and concert appearances, but her difficulties with drug and alcohol abuse seriously impacted on her health and her career.  However, in 1960–61, after a long recovery, she toured Europe and North America with a program labeled ‘Just Judy’, and the Carnegie Hall performance was the culmination of what had turned out to be a highly successful comeback.  The recording of that concert was a huge success.  It spent 73 weeks on the Billboards charts, including 13 weeks as number one.  It also received four Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year in 1962. (Garland was the first woman to receive that award.)

Actress Jody Briskey has portrayed Judy Garland before, most notably in History Theatre’s world premiere of Beyond the Rainbow, a role she reprised at Florida Stage, and for which she received a 2006 Carbonell nomination, and at the Theatre at Arts Garage.

Garland in Word and Song is a show that Briskey found evolved naturally over the years: “Judy has been a passion of mine since I was a little girl, although I may not have known it at the time,” she explains. “I knew there was something about her, especially when she sang, that latched on to my soul.  As I developed my own passion for singing, I always made sure I sang something of Judy’s.  She had a way of singing a standard song you may have heard a dozen times by other performers but by the time she enveloped it with her heart it became uniquely hers.  It’s this heart that I feel as I bring her songs to my audiences. Over the years I’ve been given more opportunities to embrace Judy’s music and it has led to this show of songs and stories.”

Musical Direction and Accompaniment for Garland in Word and Song is by four-time Carbonell Award-winner David Nagy.  The production’s Set Design is by B.I.G. Creative Services;  Sound Design is by Andres Allessandro Beuses Casasanta, and Lighting Design is by Nicole Stav and Laura Fulton.  Costumes are by Rich Hamson and Christine Frank, and Wig Design is by Robert Dunn.

Old Jews Telling Jokes showcases five actors in a comedy that pays tribute to and reinvents classic jokes of the past and present.   It celebrates the rich tradition of Jewish humor “and all the rabbis, complaining wives, fed-up husbands, patience-challenged physicians, gossiping ladies and competitive men” populating it. In this futuristic capitalist dystopia, an outbreak of disease killed millions and resulted in heavily regulated human interaction (and intimacy). The Rocky Horror Show is an outrageous assemblage of – and humorous tribute to – the most stereotypical science fiction and horror movies, Marvel comics, Frankie Avalon/Annette Funicello outings and rock ‘n’ roll of every vintage. BOCA RATON, FL:  Broward Stage Door Theatre in association with Kevin Black Productions will bring Black’s hit show, Vegas:  A Night on the Strip to Boca Raton’s Willow Theatre in Sugar Sand Park for a limited run from February 3rd to February 12th.   The production, which premiered at Stage Door on December 9th,  played to packed houses through its run , and was so well received by audiences and critics alike that when The Willow expressed interest in the production, Black and Stage Door Executive Producer felt the show deserved to be extended, and Palm Beach County audiences given the chance to see what Broward County theatre patrons had been enjoying during the show’s sold out run.

From Soul to Swing, Kevin Black’s recent productions – created exclusively for Stage Door Theatre – have had audiences on their feet and dancing.  The Soul of Motor City, his tribute to the music of Motown, which was extended several times over this past summer, and Swing! Swing! Swing! his lovingly assembled compendium of Jazz and Swing classics were both recommended for Carbonell nominations.

Vegas: A Night on the Strip dives into the rich history that made the city of Las Vegas a hot destination for entertainers from around the world.  Featuring music from some of Vegas’ most memorable icons – from the Rat Pack and Elvis to the modern-day Cirque-type spectacles; from showgirls to headliners; from high-rollers to high-flying acrobatics…  “with maybe a Vegas wedding thrown in!” Black said recently.

“When most people think of Vegas, they immediately remember the likes of Frank, Sammy, and Dean…The Rat Pack,” Black continued.  “However, Vegas: A Night on the Strip is so much more. I decided to tell the history of ‘The Entertainment Capitol of The World’, through the construction and implosion of those iconic hotels on The Strip, and the entertainment that graced their stages. Our six vocalists pay tribute to this great city with nods to numerous Vegas icons – not only the Rat Pack, but legends like Celine Dion, Elton John, Tom Jones and Wayne Newton, and the lavish cirque -style shows that dominate The Strip today.

“The creative “workshop” process is my favorite,” Black explained when asked about the evolution of the production. “Arranging new ways to present some old classics and seldom heard gems is so satisfying. Our Musical Director/Arranger Ben Bagby is a master at this and you’ll see his work shine more than ever in this show.”

Five of the of the six original Stage Door vocalists will make the transfer to the Willow – they are: Daniel Bourgoin, Arlene Coutee, Chantal Deshaies, Gabrielle Graham, and Brad Rakushin.  Joshua Graham, who wowed audiences in Black’s recent hit show The Soul of Motor City, will replace Jar’Davion Brown, who had a prior commitment. Black has also added variety comedic host Nikki Adams to the mix.  Specialty artists Cherrise Pawlak and Derick Pierson, and 12 year old vocal sensation Emily Taylor Kaufman round out the cast of 10.

Vegas: A Night on the Strip will run from February 3 to 12 at The Willow Theatre in Sugar Sand Park. The theatre is located at 300 South Military Trail in Boca Raton (33486).

BOCA RATON, FL: From December 4th through December 13th, 2015 audiences at the Willow Theatre in Boca Raton’s Sugar Sand Park will be invited to spend an evening of music and nostalgia as The 4 Guyz harmonize, reminisce, and ‘drift back to The Good ‘Ole Dayz of drive-ins, sock hops, greasers and hot rods’ in 4 Ever ‘50s.

belairA treat for history buffs and music lovers alike, the show asks how many of the jingles of that special era rattled off during the evening will audiences remember and sing along to? Can they name all the top television shows from the 1950’s and early 1960’s? And of course, can they sing along to such timeless classics as “Teenager in Love,” “Blue Moon,” “At the Hop,” “Why Do Fools Fall in Love?” and many, many more.

Debuting over 10 years ago and running continuously throughout the Midwest, 4 Ever ‘50s, featuring The 4 Guyz has consistently sold out wherever and whenever it has played. The group’s mixture of nostalgia, fun, and audience participation resonates with theatre and music patrons of all ages.

When the group’s founder, actor and musician James A. Skiba relocated to South Florida, “I missed performing the show immensely,” he explains. “And I truly believe we can capture the same magic here that we have done elsewhere.”

The other members of the group feel the same way: “As soon as I told them I’d be producing 4 Ever ‘50s down here, two of our original ‘Guyz’, J.W. Anderson and Stephen Uselman arranged to take time off work and are coming to South Florida from the Midwest to help teach the show to our local cast, and to participate in several of the performances themselves,” Skiba says.

“There’s an abundance of amazing talent down here,” he continues. “And we think we found the perfect mix of charm, warmth, comedy, and beautiful voices that blend together on the four part harmonies throughout the show.”

The new Guyz are Shane Cooney, Larry Buzzeo, Cameron Jordan, and Steven Michael Kennedy as a swing.”

BOCA RATON, FL: Kevin Black’s Cirquesco has been described as captivating, stunning, exotic, intense, amazing, and just plain fun.   Cirquesco is a unique combination of song, dance, acrobatics, and humor, and a perfect example of what the multi-talented and extremely creative producer/director/choreographer brings to the South Florida Theatre scene. The production will run for three performances only – February 20th, 21st, and 22nd, at the Willow Theatre in Boca Raton’s Sugar Sand Park.

“Cirquesco explores our most treasured emotion… love,” says Black, “…through the journey of our Lead Player, a somewhat lost soul searching for meaning in this Mad, Mad World.”  Contemporary choreography, an electrifying score, and elaborate and beautiful costuming – all created, arranged, and assembled by Black – combine to make Circquesco a “feast for the eyes, the ears, and the soul.”

Kasey J. HughesSinger/dancer Kasey J. Hughes will also be featured. Hughes has an extensive background nationally as well as internationally. He has regularly been a featured performer in the Radio City Christmas Spectacular, as well as at the Moulin Rouge in Paris, and various Disney productions in Orlando and Tokyo.

Kevin Black is the owner and artistic director of Kevin Black Productions. His expertise, experience, and creativity in directing and choreography, as well as in set, costume, and lighting design have built him a solid reputation as one of the top ‘go-to guys’ in South Florida. Kevin’s most recent work includes 8 Track, I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change, and Rags at The Plaza Theatre in Manalapan. He directed and choreographed Spamalot, Tommy, and The Rocky Horror Show for Entr’Acte Theatrix performing at The Crest Theatre in Delray Beach.  Kevin has also produced South Florida tours of La Cage Aux Folles, The Jazz Singer, Smokey Joe’s Café, Funny Girl, Victor/Victoria, Cabaret and Dreamgirls. And his recent creations for Stage Door Theatre, On the Radio, starring Ballroom’s Mimi J. and What’s New Pussycat? The Soundtrack of an Era, were extremely successful and well reviewed. Kevin’s work can currently be seen at the Villa de Palmar Resorts in Cabo, Mexico; Kevin is also the Artistic Director for CAST (Career in the Arts, School of Talent) located in Cooper City, Florida.

Mimi J. was born and raised in Miami. She is a professional singer currently performing in the South Florida tri-county area, and has been the recipient of numerous awards in vocal performance. She received her degrees in Musical Theater from the University of Central Florida Conservatory Theater in Orlando, where she attended on the Walt Disney Scholarship. Mimi has been a member of the gospel recording group, Revelation S.E.E.D. founded and led by Margaret Reynolds of KC and the Sunshine Band, and has sung background for a number of award-winning artists including Gloria Estefan, Bobby McFerrin, Betty Wright, Ralph Tresvant and Johnny Gill of the R&B group New Edition, and Quan Howell of the gospel group Sounds of Blackness. Some of her regional theatre and Broadway National and International Tour credits include Ain’t Misbehavin’, Smokey Joe’s Café, Fame, Nunsense, and Rent. Mimi was the first woman of color to play Teen Angel in the classic 70’s hit, Grease during the show’s Pan-Asian tour. She recently starred in On the Radio at the Broward Stage Door Theatre, and was a featured performer in Kevin Black’s recent production of Ballroom South Beach Style at the Willow Theatre.

Cirquesco will run for three performances only at the Willow Theatre in Sugar Sand Park from February 20 – 22, 2015. The Boca Raton Theatre Guild was looking for something unique as a follow-up to the company’s recent successful productions of Pippin and Chicago: “Something modern – with music that would appeal to all generations,” says producer Keith Garsson. “And when Everyday Rapture opened on Broadway in 2010 to outstanding reviews and sold-out performances it just stuck in my mind. It’s funny, timely and unlike anything you’ve seen before.” Everyday Rapture will have its South Florida premiere when it previews at the Willow Theatre in Sugar Sand Park on November 7th and opens the following night. It will run through November 23rd.

The show, which has been called a ‘stage memoir disguised as fiction’, tells the story of a young woman’s psycho-spiritual-sexual journey down the rocky path that separates her mostly Mennonite past from her mostly Manhattan future – from the cornfields of Kansas to the clover fields of New York (with a disturbing detour through YouTube!). Everyday Rapture entwines spirituality and show biz.  It follows a young woman as she grows from a Mennonite to a Manhattanite, with many psychological and spiritual challenges on the way.  Gay men, Judy Garland and two preachers named Fred all form major parts of the tapestry woven into the play. Everyday Rapture features songs by numerous singers and songwriters including Johnny Mercer, David Byrne, George Harrison, Roberta Flack, Judy Garland, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, and even Mr. Rogers.

Musical director Caryl Fantel, who has credits from Off-Broadway to regional Caryl Fantel Color Head Shot 2014 Print Versiontheatres and concert halls throughout South Florida and around the United States is equally enthusiastic about the production:
“I’m excited to work on it because there’s truly something for everyone, running the gamut of musical styles from standards to musical theatre, funk, and rock. Joining Langel on the Willow stage will be Ann Marie Olson, Leah Sessa, and Ben Solmor (who is also serving as the show’s choreographer.)

The Women’s Theatre Project will present Red Hot Patriot: The Kick-Ass Wit of Molly Ivins February 28th through March 16th, 2014 at the Willow Theatre in Sugar Sand Park.  It will be the first time the play has been produced in South Florida.

Barbara Bradshaw - cAward-winning actress Barbara Bradshaw will star as the unsinkable, unstoppable Molly Ivins. The ‘dyed-in-the-wool liberal from deep in the heart of Texas’, famously brassy newspaper columnist and best-selling author was a crusading journalist who broke gender barriers with her sharp-tongued wit, humor, and political savvy to establish herself as one of the nation’s most influential political columnists.

Written by twin sisters Margaret and Allison Engel, the play is a true tribute to Ivins’ keen intelligence, sense of humor, and love of irony. The script also delves into Ivins’ life to reveal what drove her from a comfortable upper-class upbringing and education to the good-ole-boy, hard-drinking world of journalism and political warfare.  Red Hot Patriot seamlessly weaves personal anecdotes with a sharp and clever look at one of our favorite national pastimes – politics.

“I love the fact that the Dallas Times Herald let Ivins write what she pleased,” says director Genie Croft, “They even endorsed that policy on billboards that read: ‘Molly Ivins, Can’t Say That, Can She?’ The Engels’ script captures the jokes about provoking politicians, and her reminiscences of personal heartbreak inform and offer insight into who she was.”

Barbara Bradshaw is thrilled and excited to take on Ivins’ persona.  The winner of four Carbonell Awards, the Los Angeles Drama-logue Award for Best Actress, The Silver Palm Award, The Seaside Music Theatre award, several New Times: Best Actress awards, says:    “I shall struggle mightily with this amazing challenge to bring this woman to life…her wit, her wisdom, and her passion.  The prospect is daunting but Molly never shied from a challenge and neither shall I…. to quote another… ‘damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!’” When asked for a favorite Ivins quote, Bradshaw responded with this one:   “So keep fightin’ for freedom and justice, beloveds, but don’t you forget to have fun doin’ it. Lord, let your laughter ring forth. Be outrageous, ridicule the fraidy-cats, rejoice in all the oddities that freedom can produce.”

Red Hot Patriot: The Wit and Wisdom of Molly Ivins will run from February 28th through March 16th, with performances on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 8 pm, and on Saturdays and Sundays at 2 p.m.  There will be a special matinee performance on Friday, March 14th.
