Waiting for Godot

“Waiting for Godot is all feeling. Perhaps that is why it is puzzling and convincing at the same time. Theatregoers can rail at it, but they cannot ignore it.”
~ Brooks Atkinson, NY Times

“…a witty and poetic conundrum” ~ Philip Hope-Wallace, The Guardian

March 28, 2017

BOCA RATON, FL:  Evening Star Productions will present Samuel Beckett’s existential masterpiece, Waiting for Godot, at Sol Theatre in Boca Raton, from April 21 – May 7, 2017. (There will be a preview performance on April 20.)

On a barren stretch of road, near a single nondescript tree, two vagabond men wait for someone or something named Godot.  Their hope seems to be that the mysterious Godot will change their lives for the better.  Two strangers arrive, one man at the end of another’s rope. A boy also appears and disappears.

The simplicity of the play’s description belies its depth and complexity. Critics, scholars, and audiences have read numerous interpretations into Beckett’s work – philosophical, religious, political, and social references have been cited and discussed since the play’s world premiere in Paris in 1953 – it was Beckett’s first professionally produced play – and its North American premiere at Florida’s Coconut Grove Playhouse in 1956.  In a poll conducted by the British Royal National Theatre in 1990, Waiting for Godot was voted the ‘most significant English language play of the 20th century.’

Evening Star Productions’ Artistic Director Rosalie Grant will direct the production, with Sara Grant as assistant director, Waiting for Godot will feature Lito Beccera as Vladimir, Seth Trucks as Estragon, Skye Whitcomb as Pozzo, Christopher Mitchell as Lucky, and Carsten Kjaerulff as a boy.

Scenic Art for Waiting for Godot is by Kate McVay, Lighting Design, Set Design and Construction is by Ardean Landhuis, Costume Design is by Briana Earhart and MJ Baum, and Sound Design is by Christian Cooper.

“There are so many reasons I chose Samuel Beckett’s masterpiece Waiting for Godot for Evening Star’s fourth season … and why I chose to direct it,” she explains.  “The primary reason is that Beckett’s genius lay in creating a work that still speaks to audiences, particularly in troubled times.  Waiting for Godot seems to have a unique resonance during times of social and political crisis. As a modernist existential meditation it can at first appear bleak: “They give birth astride of a grave,” Pozzo says. “The light gleams an instant, then it’s night once more.”  It is funny yet poetic, and reveals humanity’s talents for stoicism, companionship, and keeping going.  There is no drama more stripped down and essential than Godot, whose mysteries Beckett refused to elucidate beyond “the laughter and the tears”.  I love the notion that after our Godot closes in another hundred years Vladimir and Estragon will still be on a stage somewhere – still waiting for Godot.”

“Since first discovering Waiting for Godot as a high school sophomore, I’ve been fascinated by the simple and profound message behind both what is said and what is left unsaid in this unsettling and timely work,” says Skye Whitcomb.  “Its examination of the human experience, and its fierce critique of the mental and spiritual chains which bind us, make this work one that needs to be seen and read by anyone wishing to step beyond the banal and mundane.”

Waiting for Godot will run from April 21 – May 7 at Sol Theatre in Boca Raton. (There will be a preview performance on April 20 at 8 pm.) Tickets are $30 and $20 for students and seniors. Group rates are also available. Tickets are on sale now, and can be purchased  by calling 561-447-8829 or on line at www.eveningstarproductions.org.

(Preview Performance – January 12)

December 21, 2016

BOCA RATON, FL:  Evening Star Productions will present the South Florida premiere of Brad Alexander and Adam Mathias’ award-winning contemporary musical, See Rock City and Other Destinations, at Sol Theatre in Boca Raton, from January 13 – 29, 2017. (There will be a preview performance on January 12 at 8 pm.)

With a book full of humor and humanity, and a score that incorporates pop, rock, folk and more, each of the musical’s loosely linked stories builds on the last to create a vivid travelogue of Americans learning to overcome their fears and expectations in order to connect:

A wanderer believes his destiny is written on rooftops along the North Carolina Interstate; a young man yearns to connect with intelligent life in Roswell, New Mexico; a woman at the Alamo steps out of the shadow of her grandparents’ idealized romance to take a chance on love; three estranged sisters cruise to Glacier Bay to scatter their father’s ashes; two high school boys face unexpected fears in the Coney Island Spook House; and a terrified bride-to-be ponders taking the leap… over Niagara Falls.

See Rock City & Other Destinations won the 2011 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Book of a Musical and was nominated for Outstanding Lyrics, Outstanding Music, Outstanding Direction, Outstanding Lighting, and Outstanding Musical. The musical also received the 2007 Jerry Bock Award and the 2008 Richard Rodgers Award for Excellence in Musical Theatre Writing.

Rosalie GrantEvening Star’s Artistic Director Rosalie Grant chose Geoffrey Short to direct the production: “While designing Evening Star’s 4th season I felt it was important to bring a variety of creativity to the table,” she explains. “I’d had several discussions with Geoffrey Short over the past year, and having witnessed his work as actor and director, I felt he would be a perfect fit to direct for Evening Star.  Geoffrey knew instantly he wanted to bring See Rock City to Sol Theatre and Evening Star … it felt like a perfect fit of cast size, instrumentation and story for Sol’s intimate setting.  And from what I’m hearing from the cast as they navigate these early rehearsals it truly is a perfect fit!”

geoff-short-headshot-3“I was immediately charmed by See Rock City and Other Destinations when I first saw it performed at Baldwin Wallace University in my hometown of Cleveland, Ohio in 2010,” says director Short .  “It’s an award-winning show about journeys and destinations. Highways and pilgrimages. The heart and spirit of the show is that it’s an intimate musical driven by the theme of travelling to tell stories that speak to anyone who has loved, lost or searched for more meaning in their lives. Its themes are truly universal.  It’s funny and touching with an incredible contemporary score that I’m so excited to share in its South Florida regional premiere at Evening Star Productions. I’m sure audiences will be as charmed with See Rock City and this incredible cast of storytellers as I have been.”

See Rock City and Other Destinations will feature Yasmin Adli, Chris Alvarez, Chris D’Angelo, Robert Fritz, Jeanine Gangloff, Murphy Hayes, and Mariah Jimenez.

Anthony Campisi will serve as the production’s Musical Director; Scenic Art is by Katie McVay, Lighting Design is by Geoffrey Short, who co-designed the set with Ardean Landhuis.

See Rock City and Other Destinations will run from January 13 – 29 at Sol Theatre in Boca Raton. (There will be a preview performance on January 12 at 8 pm.) Tickets are $30 and $15 for students and seniors. Group rates are also available. Tickets are on sale now, and can be purchased  by calling 561-447-8829 or on line at www.eveningstarproductions.org.

Perfect entertainment for the entire family…

November 10, 2016:

BOCA RATON, FL: The beloved tale of the penny-pinching miser, Ebenezer Scrooge, and the awakening of his long-forgotten festive spirit is a seasonal tradition for many. Sol Children Theatre will revisit Charles Dickens’ ghostly tale of the Past, Present, and Future when they present Brian Way’s faithful adaptation of Dickens’ timeless classic. The production will run from December 2nd through December 18th at Sol Theatre in Boca Raton.

First published on December 19th, 1843, Dickens’ novella immediately met with critical and popular acclaim, and has never been out of print. A Christmas Carol illustrates the author’s concerns about time, family, and society’s ills; however Dickens also used his own humiliating childhood experiences, along with his sympathy for the poor, and various fairy tales and seasonal stories to enhance his tale.

chris mitchellCharles Dickens’ The Christmas Carol will be directed by Christopher Mitchell, and will feature a cast composed of adults and children.

“With it paying homage to both a cherished story and treasured holiday, I’m thrilled to be directing this production,” Mitchell says.  “It’s eerie spooky undertones and touching story line have been great fun to play with. Everyone loves a good ghost story and a great Christmas story. And with this play, you get both!”

Director Mitchell’s adult cast includes Jim Gibbons as Ebenezer Scrooge;  Murphy Hayes as Jacob Marley and Joe;  Robert Fabano as Bob Cratchit. Other adult cast members include Sara Grant, Barry Katz, Fern Katz, Constance Moreau, Jenna Wyatt, Jeremy Wershoven, Amy Coker, John Maher, Neil Evangelista, Shafer Ross, and Melanie Leivers. Younger cast members include Eden Wexler as Tiny Tim, as well as Faith Alfieri, and Sabrina Lipp.

Boca Raton’s Sol Children Theatre is a not-for-profit theatre organization founded by veteran director and actor Rosalie Grant fifteen years ago.  The company’s mission is to provide children with a safe, secure, and highly professional theatre experience.  Those children in then in turn provide quality theatre experiences for audiences.  In this production of Charles Dickens’ The Christmas Carol, Sol students will have the opportunity to work with adult professional actors as well as with their contemporaries.

brian-francis-wayBrian Way
(1923 – 2006), a British teacher, director, and writer, is often credited with originating educational theater for children. He and Margaret Faulkes, in founding the Theatre Center in London, introduced the concept of informal theatrical performances in school, and the expansion of arts education. In his lifetime he wrote over 50 plays, including Pinocchio, The Mirrorman, and Sleeping Beauty, as well as the renowned text Audience Participation.

“Who knew that a musical about the life of the inventor of the printing press
could have so many laughs?”
 Jason Zinoman NY Times

August 23, 2016

BOCA RATON, FLORIDA:  Evening Star Productions will leap even farther back into history,  jumping from William Shakespeare (their recent production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream played to appreciative audiences for three weeks in August) to Johannes Gutenberg when they produce Anthony King and Scott Brown’s Gutenberg!  The Musical! which will open on September 15th, and run through October 2nd at Boca Raton’s Sol Theatre.

This uproarious spoof tells the story of two passionate musical theatre writers – desperate and bravely untalented – who perform a backer’s audition for their new musical about the inventor of the printing press. With an unending supply of enthusiasm, the two authors sing all the songs and play all the parts in their crass historical epic.

Gutenberg! The Musical! opened at the Actor’s Playhouse in January 2007; it was nominated for the 2007 Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Musical and the 2007 Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding New Off-Broadway Musical, and its authors were nominated for the 2007 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Book of a Musical.

BenSandomir headshot

Ben Sandomir

Gutenberg’s director, Ben Sandomir, explains the play this way: “Bud and Doug are putting on a backer’s audition for their new musical about the inventor of the printing press, Johannes Gutenberg. Since research materials on Johannes are “scant” they fill in the blanks with “historical fiction”.

“Bud and Doug are played by two local South Florida actors, Robyn Eli Brenner and Alex Weiss,” he continues.   “They also play all 18 characters in the musical, a mighty but fitting task for a play about two artists shooting for the stars. As the director, I’ve spent the last few months trying to figure out how Bud and Doug can transport the audience to the word of their magnum opus on a shoestring budget inside a small black box theatre. I think our audiences will laugh and be entertained and fall in love with these hopeless optimists, as I have.”

Robyn Eli Brenner“As an actor you always want the opportunity to do something like Gutenberg – a two-man, full length musical.” Robyn Eli Brenner says. “And I’m extremely proud and honored to be doing such a funny piece of theatre – one that audiences probably wouldn’t get to see if it weren’t for this production.”

ALEX

Alex Weiss

Alex Weiss, who plays Doug, agrees: “I’m so excited to be working with this extremely talented cast and crew on Gutenberg! The Musical!” he says. “With Ben’s direction and unique perspective, I really think we will be bringing something to South Florida that’s never been done before. Plus, I get to play a variety of different characters including a woman named after a font. It’s the little things!”

Weiss has also offered a thought from the enthusiastic perspective of his character, Doug Simon:   “I can’t wait to bring our musical to the people! Bud and I have always wanted to be on Broadway and I truly feel like this is the first and only step that we will need to get there.”

Gutenberg! The Musical! will run from September 15 – October 2 at Sol Theatre in Boca Raton. Tickets are $25 and $10 for students. Group rates are also available. Tickets are on sale now, and can be purchased  by calling 561-447-8829 or on line at www.eveningstarproductions.org.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream

Two companies combine to create the
Shakespeare Initiative
in a commitment to breathe new life into the greatest plays ever written.

July 7, 2016
BOCA RATON, FL:  Evening Star Productions, whose recent production of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged)[revised] received excellent reviews and played to consistently sold out houses will team with Sol Children Theatre and take on The Bard once more when they present William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream from August 5th through August 21st at Sol Theatre in Boca Raton.

Shakespeare’s tale of order and disorder, reality and appearance, and above all – love – is universally acknowledged to be one of his most beloved and enduring works.

The production will be the first to combine the talents and resources of both companies in a new venture, aptly named The Shakespeare Initiative.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream will be directed by Seth Trucks, whose training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), the British American Drama Academy (BADA), and at the Experimental Theatre Wing at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts will all be brought into play in this production.

Seth Trucks

Seth Trucks

“This will be a reinvention of Shakespeare’s most popular comedy,” explains Trucks, who is extremely excited about the production, as well as the Shakespeare Initiative itself.  “We will be featuring both youth and adult actors, and we have re-imagined the play as a high school story set in the 1980s. We’re using age appropriate actors in all the roles, and we have integrated numerous multi-media elements into the production, which will give the play a cinematic atmosphere.

“Shakespeare has been my great passion for more than two decades, and in that time I have taken part in four different productions of Midsummer,” Trucks continues. Each amazing experience I’ve had with this show has left me with such inspiration it seems to me as if this production has been years in the making.

“This was to be my friend Laura Ruchala’s next show at Sol Theatre before she tragically left us,” he says.  “In one of our last conversations we talked about how much of our love for The Bard was rooted in the freedom of interpretation his writing affords us as theatre artists, so with Evening Star’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream I have embraced this philosophy and created a version of the play suited for this amazing little space, and for the artists who call this space their home. With nods to the films of John Hughes, Pixar, The Peanuts and Fantasia, our re-imagining of this play will be a passionate energetic affair that aims to be as thought provoking for those already familiar with it, as it is clear and palatable for those new to Shakespeare.”

Rosalie Grant

Rosalie Grant

“It’s a natural fit – and a fitting progression,” explains Rosalie Grant, who is the founder and driving force behind both Evening Star and Sol.  She and Trucks are working closely together to ensure the evolution and development of the Shakespeare Initiative continues to stay true to the mission statements of both companies.

“This production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream has been in the works in Seth’s imagination as long as I have known him, and it started becoming an Evening Star dream even before our production of The Comedy of Errors got to opening night!” Grant says.  “Laura Ruchala and I chatted frequently about her visions of various Shakespeare plays that would fit nicely at Sol, and like Seth, the last chat I too had with Laura was about Midsummer being her next directorial project for Evening Star – and she was excitedly dreaming about casting children in the adaptation.  Seth’s version is a tribute to Laura and to his own vivid imagination and astounding creativity, while incorporating the missions of both Evening Star and Sol Children.  I couldn’t be prouder to co-produce with him this re-imagination of inarguably one of the greatest plays ever written.”

A Midsummer Night’s Dream will run from August 5 – 21 at Sol Theatre in Boca Raton. Tickets are $20 and $10 for students. Group rates are also available. Tickets are on sale now, and can be purchased  by calling 561-447-8829 or on line at www.eveningstarproductions.org.

“If you like Shakespeare, you’ll love this show. if you hate Shakespeare you’ll love this show!”  ~The Today Show

June 1, 2016

BOCA RATON, FL:  Evening Star Productions will warp from one classic musical to 37 classical plays when they present The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged)[revised] from June 17th through June 26th at Sol Theatre in Boca Raton.  (The company’s production of The Rocky Horror Show completed a sold out run at The Abyss Stage on May 28th).

An irreverent, fast paced comedic condensation of all the Bard’s plays, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) was written in 1987 by Adam Long, Daniel Singer and Jess Winfield (aka Reduced Shakespeare Company), and was first performed at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.  It eventually ran for nine years in London’s West End.  Featured are all 37 of Shakespeare’s plays, meant to be performed in 97 minutes, by three actors.

To celebrate its 20th anniversary, Singer and Winfield thoroughly revised the show to bring it up to date for 21st century audiences, incorporating some of the funniest material culled from numerous productions that have been performed around the world, as well as references to various contemporary cultural touchstones. Renamed The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged)[revised] the show is notable for – among other things – holding the world record for the shortest ever performance of Hamlet, clocking in at 43 seconds, as well as the fastest performance of Hamlet backwards, at 42 seconds.

Evening Star’s artistic director Rosalie Grant has enlisted Savannah Rootes to direct the production:

“I’m so excited to be directing my first play and the fact that it’s Complete Works makes it extra special,” Rootes says. “As the first show I stage-managed, Complete Works holds a special place in my heart. It was the beginning of a wonderful journey of learning the ropes and what it really takes to be the brains of the operation. The best part was working beside Rosalie Grant. By the end of my first show with her we were on the same brainwave. I really grew up while expanding my skills in stage management and direction. I’m psyched that I’m re-entering the world of Complete Works. It is funny, witty, and the perfect combination of physical and intellectual comedy. The cast is incredible and the staff at Sol Theatre provides awesome support. It will be a show you won’t want to miss.”

Taking on over 1000 roles in the production are Alex Weiss, Edward Scott, and Seth Trucks – all of whom are well versed in the works of the Bard. Alex Weiss’ numerous stage credits include the roles of Benedick in Much Ado About Nothing, and Caliban in The Tempest.  Edward Scott has played The Grave Digger in Hamlet, Romeo in Romeo and Juliet, Lysander in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Lorenzo in The Merchant of Venice. Seth Trucks studied classical theatre at the British American Drama Academy and The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, and has performed with the Palm Beach Shakespeare Festival.

The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged)[revised] will run from June 17 – 26 at Sol Theatre in Boca Raton. Tickets are $15 and $10 for students. Group rates are also available. Tickets are on sale now, and can be purchased  by calling 561-447-8829 or on line at www.eveningstarproductions.org.

BOCA RATON, FL:  Evening Star Productions will present Peter Gordon’s comedic send-up of classic ‘whodounnits’, Murdered to Death, from April 14th through May 1st at Sol Theatre in Boca Raton. (There will be a preview performance on April 14th)

Gordon’s spoof – which has been described as ‘deliciously wicked’ and ‘hilarious and very clever’ – has created a cast of stereotypical Agatha Christie-like characters: Bunting the butler; an English Colonel with the prerequisite stiff upper lip; a shady French art dealer and his moll; bumbling local inspectors; and a well-meaning local sleuth who seems to attract murder wherever she goes.  They’re all caught up in the side-splitting antics which follow the mysterious death of the owner of a country manor house.

Murdered to Death will be directed by Evening Star’s Artistic Director, Rosalie Grant:

Rosalie Grant

Rosalie Grant

“My love affair with British comedy goes back to watching Benny Hill with my grandparents up through Monty Python and Fawlty Towers,” Grant explains.  “I first read the Peter Gordon “Death” series and fell absolutely in love with Inspector Pratt (inspired by the character Inspector Clouseau).  So I brought a group of local actor friends together one evening to hear Murdered to Death read, and when it took us over 3 hours to get through the read due to our laughter I knew Evening Star had to stage it.  I am thrilled to have an outstanding cast to bring Murdered to Death to life as a regional premiere!”

Cast in Murdered to Death are Lito Becerra (Constable Thompkins), Jim Gibbons (Bunting, the Butler), Murphy Hayes (Colonel Charles Craddock), Fern Katz (Joan Maple), Kitt Marsh (Margaret Craddock), Christopher Mitchell (Pierre Marceau), Amanda Ortega (Dorothy), Phyllis Spear (Mildred), Renee Elizabeth Turner (Elizabeth Hartley-Trumpington), and Seth Trucks (Inspector Pratt).

With over 1400 professional and amateur productions world-wide, Peter Gordon is one of the UK’s most popular playwrights. To date, he has written twelve comedies, a psychological thriller and a one act comedy.  Of his modern comedies, it has been said that “Peter Gordon writes about life. Sometimes it is bizarre and funny, sometimes it is sad, but it is always entertaining”.

All performances of Murdered to Death will take place at Sol Theatre in Boca Raton.  Tickets are $20 ($10 for students with valid ID) and are on sale now. Tickets can be purchased at the Sol box office at 561-447-8829 or on line at www.eveningstarproductions.org. Group rates are available. Sol Theatre is located at 3333 North Federal Highway in Boca Raton (33431).

SOL CHILDREN THEATRE
ANNOUNCE THEIR
2016-2017 SEASON
Sol_Evening-Star-Combined-LFrom Samuel Beckett to Lewis Carroll:
Two popular Boca Raton theatre companies will offer audiences and actors of all ages an exciting mix of theatre

March 10, 2016:
BOCA RATON, FL:  Although Evening Star Productions and Sol Children Theatre are just a bit more than midway through their third and fourteenth seasons, both companies – under the direction of founder and Artistic Director Rosalie Grant are deep into preparation for next years’ productions.

Evening Star Productions 2016-2017 season will begin with Gutenberg! The Musical! (September 15 – October 2, 2016), continue with See Rock City and Other Destinations (January 12 – 29, 2017), and conclude with Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot (April 20 – May 7, 2017).

Sol Children Theatre will present Charles Dickens’ The Christmas Carol (adapted from the classic by Brian Way) (December 2 – 18, 2016), Once on this Island (June 9 – 25, 2017), and Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, adapted by Seth Trucks (August 11 – 27).

“With Evening Star entering its fourth season and Sol Children it’s fifteenth, I found myself reevaluating who we are as a theatre company,” Grant explains. “Who do we serve on stage and in our seats, and what sort of theatre should we continue and/or begin to dish out? I started by re-reading every critical review we’ve received to gather those opinions, and compare notes with our patrons’ comments.  I then took into consideration the very specific, not-easily-ignored logistics of our theatre, and finally added our Mission Statement as the umbrella everything must fall under.  A concept formed, and from that concept our next season was born.  Evening Star’s 2016-17 season consists of a regional premiere, an absurdist classic, challenging roles, small casts and brave directors.  Sol Children’s season gets as many children and local adults on stage as possible in family-friendly beloved stories under skillful direction.  Putting the two companies’ seasons together we’re giving local actors and our patrons an eclectic fair of three musicals and three straight plays – from contemporary to classic to absurd to fantasy.  So my job as artistic director is done for now, and my wonderfully talented directors are waiting in the wings!”

Ben Sandomir will direct Gutenberg!  The Musical!  The show, about two aspiring playwrights who perform a backers’ audition for their new musical was nominated for an Outer Circle Award and a Drama Desk Award in 2007:

“The first challenge is to find two versatile actors, as they will be singing all the songs and playing all the roles,” says Sandomir. “The play is normally very barebones as these aspiring playwrights are not yet successful. This is where the fun of directing will come in. As a director and writer I’ve worked on many low and no budget productions. The smaller the budget the more creative you have to be. The juices are already flowing and I can’t wait to fully figure out what this means for Gutenberg! at Evening Star!”

“Ever since seeing a college production of See Rock City and Other Destinations a few years ago, I’ve been fascinated with the notion this musical offers,” the show’s director Geoffrey Short explains. “Traveling and relationships have more in common than might meet the eye. Whether you’re on a North Carolina highway or on a tour in Niagara Falls, exploration, discovery, getting lost and being found can happen on the road and in our personal lives too. See Rock City is a contemporary musical about connections missed and made at tourist destinations across America.  When this show is presented in the intimate Evening Star theatre space I know it will create a very personal, funny and touching theatrical experience for our audiences.”

Rosalie Grant will direct Waiting for Godot herself.  “Godot is a comedic director’s dream script,” she says.  “It’s also the perfect vehicle for an ensemble experience.  It’s a challenging piece to say the least … for actors, director and audience. Putting these three elements together guaranteed an exciting venture, and I’m excited to freshly imagine Beckett’s word play to bring the poetry, dreamscapes and nonsense to life through a cast of what will have to be very skillful actors.”

Sol Children Theatre’s first production of the 2016-2017 The Christmas Carol is perfectly timed to fit the spirit of the holiday season:

“With it paying homage to both a cherished story and treasured holiday, I’m thrilled to be directing this production,” director Christopher Mitchell explains.  “Its eerie, spooky undertones and heartwarming ending will be great fun to play with next winter. Everyone loves a good ghost story and a great Christmas story. And with this show, you get both!

“Once On This Island is set in the Caribbean Sea one stormy night,” director James Skiba explains. “It contains elements of both Romeo and Juliet and the fairy tale The Little Mermaid. The story concerns a young peasant girl, TiMoune who is saved from a deadly storm by the gods on a tropical island, and who uses the power of love to bring together people of different social classes; it talks about society and the various classes and how we treat one another. In the end it is due to the young Ti Moune’s heart and her dedication to this true love that others begin to change and a seed is sown to make the world a better place where we all Live Once On This Island of Mother Earth in the hope that someday all of us might be able to truly love who ever we so choose. And that is why we tell the story.”

Evening Star Productions will continue its current season with the British Comedy Murdered to Death, which will run from April 14th through May 1st at Sol Theatre in Boca Raton. They are also teaming up with Infinite Abyss to present a ‘steam punk’ version of Richard O’Brien’s The Rocky Horror Show, which will run at the Abyss Theatre in Ft. Lauderdale from May 12 – 28.  Rosalie Grant will direct both productions.   From June 17 – 26 they will present The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) [Revised], and they’ll close out their season with a ground-breaking project directed and adapted by Seth Trucks – William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream from August 6 – 21.

All Evening Star Productions and Sol Children Theatre performances (other than The Rocky Horror Show) will take place at Sol Theatre in Boca Raton.  Ticket prices for all productions are listed below; group rates are available for all shows. Tickets to all Evening Star Productions and Sol Children Theatre 2016-2017 productions will be on sale soon; tickets for both companies remaining 2015-2016 productions are on sale now and can be purchased at the Sol Theatre box office at 561-447-8829 or on line at www.eveningstarproductions.org or www.solchildren.org  Sol Theatre is located at 3333 North Federal Highway in Boca Raton (33431).

In this two-man musical spoof, a pair of aspiring playwrights perform a backers’ audition for their new project – a big, splashy musical about printing press inventor Johann Gutenberg. Sol Children Theatre
presents
OnceUopnAmattress_proofDecember 3rd – 20th

“For a princess is a delicate thing, delicate and dainty as a dragonfly’s wing.
You can recognize a lady by her elegant air, but a genuine princess
is exceedingly rare!”
Once Upon a Mattress

 November 11, 2015
BOCA RATON, FL: Sol Children Theatre will follow up their recent sold out productions of The Mystery of Edwin Drood and Thumbelina with a classic musical comedy bound to appeal to audiences of all ages. Once Upon a Mattress will open on December 3rd and run through December 20th in the company’s charming black box venue in Boca Raton.

Based on the Hans Christian Andersen story “The Princess and the Pea”, Once Upon a Mattress puts a uniquely comic spin on the the tale of a medieval kingdom’s search for a proper princess to marry the hapless Prince Dauntless. Enter Winnifred the Woebegone, princess of the far-off swampland Farfelot – who makes her entrance looking like a drowned rat — she swam the moat. Winnifred, or Fred to her friends, is altogether too common for Dauntless’ mother, Queen Aggravain’s taste. “Blood will tell,” spits the Queen, “and yours doesn’t tell quite enough.” The Prince, however, immediately falls in love. But before happily ever after can ensue, Winnifred must pass a test, and prove to the Queen that she is indeed a true princess.

Gisbert Heuer will direct the production: “Once Upon a Mattress has always been one of my favorite musicals,” says Heuer. “So I’m particularly excited to bring my own personal vision of this show to life and onto our stage. Our cast is inspiring – the fact that it includes children who are just beginning to learn the art of stage craft, and pairs them with adult professional performers, allowing them to experience all that goes into to an actual professional production, adds a unique and exciting aspect to the show.”

Del Marrero and Burke Schoeppl will play Princess Winnifred and Prince Dauntless. Other cast members include Ellie Katz Murray (Queen Aggravain), Devin Tupler (Lady Larkin), Steven Michael Kennedy (Sir Harry), Courtney Ruebens (Minstrel), Jessi Ryan (Jester), Rylee Siegel (Lady in Waiting), Jennipher Murphy-Whitcomb (Wizard), and Meredith Levin (First Knight)

“It is such a pleasure to be under the direction of the incomparable musical genius, Gisbert Heuer,” says Burke Schoeppl. “I am filled with utmost joy to be returning to performing onstage at Sol Theatre with such a fantastic cast and crew. I will be playing the role of Prince Dauntless, a total “mama’s boy” on the search for a bona fide princess to meet his mother’s high expectations of a perfect mate. This is a hilarious musical take on a classic fairytale that you will not want to miss!”

September 15, 2015
BOCA RATON, FL: If a picture is worth 1,000 words — what about a song? Can a picture inspire a song …or fifteen? In Ryan Scott Oliver’s 35mm: A Musical Exhibition each photo creates a unique song, moments frozen in time; a glimmer of a life unfolding, a glimpse of something happening. A stunning new multimedia musical which explores a groundbreaking new concept in musical theatre, this intricately woven collection of stories told through song re-imagines what the modern American musical can be.

Evening Star Productions will present Oliver’s 35mm: A Musical Exhibition at Sol Theatre in Boca Raton from October 9th through October 25th. (There will be a preview performance on October 8th.)

35mm will feature Jordana Forrest, Sabrina Lynn Gore, Steven Michael Kennedy, Elvin Negron, and Eric O’Keefe. They will be accompanied by Jason Robert Buelow on piano, Meredith Levin on violin, and Ben Brown on guitar.

Rosalie Grant

Evening Star’s Artistic Director Rosalie Grant will direct the production: “35mm has been a unique project to direct,” she says.  Since it’s a brand-new musical we have a clean palette to work from.  That has definitely had its rewards and challenges! Add in the multimedia aspects and we have been tested as a team to analyze what we’ve been given to create theatre art from it.  Add in the incredibly difficult music and lyrical content and we have a powerful musical that belongs emotionally to me, Eric, Elvin, Jordana, Sabrina, Steven and their band-mates … it’s content has been derived from within each of us more so than other musicals with a standard plot construction.  This isn’t your mother’s musical!”

35mm was inspired by the photographs of Matthew Murphy, an internationally recognized photographer who specializes in capturing images of theatre and dance.

Oliver

“It’s a big piece and covers a wide-range of experiences and sensations,” Oliver said in a recent interview. “Truly, there’s something for everyone in this show, musically and visually. It was the easiest and probably the most rewarding thing I’ve ever written! There were no limits and so I was constantly going down new and exciting paths.”

Sabrina-240x300“The timing of this show couldn’t have been better,” explains actress Sabrina Lynn Gore, who also serves as managing director of Outré Theatre Company. “I was actually looking at this show for Outré to produce for a future season, so when I saw that Rosalie was doing it, I just knew it was a sign that I had to be a part of it. And it’s been an awesome challenge for me. It’s the kind of show I’ve been wanting to be a part of for a long time.”

Gore’s cast mates are equally enthusiastic: “This has been a dream show of mine for years now,” says Steven Michael Kennedy. “And to get the chance to perform it is beyond amazing, let alone the fact that it is the regional premiere performance! The music is some of the most difficult music I’ve worked on (in terms of the constant harmonies), but with this extremely talented cast it has been nothing but a joy!”

Eric O’Keefe wholeheartedly agrees: “35mm is crazy fun and super emotional and I couldn’t be any more excited to be a part of it!” He says.

Composer and lyricist Ryan Scott Oliver is the recipient of the 2009 Jonathan Larson Grant and the 2008 Richard Rogers Award for Musical Theatre. He is an adjunct professor at Pace University in New York, and Artistic Director of the Pasadena Musical Theatre Program in California. He received his B.A. in Music Composition from UCLA and his M.F.A. in Musical Theatre Writing from the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. He is also creator of the blog Crazytown and member of A.S.C.A.P. Oliver’s work has been heard at the Writers Guild Awards, Off-Broadway in TheatreWorksUSA’s We the People, and countless showcases.

Critical Praise for Ryan Scott Oliver’s 35mm: A Musical Exhibition

When pieced together…this musical is a thought-provoking, soul-searching exploration of two mediums fused together as one…There are intense group numbers featuring the powerful ensemble that really move the audience.” – DC Metro Theatre Arts

“The genius of this show is how Ryan Scott Oliver’s music conveys the message of Matthew Murphy’s photographs. I was constantly amazed at how the songs really spoke to each picture individually. Ryan’s music is a fresh sound that was very enjoyable to listen to.” – Call Me Adam

“When theater pundits talk about the future of Broadway and the new generation of composers, they’re talking about artists like Ryan Scott Oliver … a major new voice in musical theater” — Entertainment Weekly
