presents
Beth Henley’s
Crimes of the Heart
January 17 – February 23

“Dark, disturbing, hilarious, heartwarming… Crimes of the Heart blends all the ingredients of a black comedy in the Southern Gothic vein…”
~ Holly Johnson, The Oregonian

Logo 2Beth Henley’s Pulitzer Prize-winning comedy Crimes of the Heart will open at the Broward Stage Door Theatre on January 17th, and run through February 23rd. Sometimes described as Hannah and Her Sisters with a Southern accent, Crimes of the Heart has often been named one of the finest plays in American Theatre.  Along with the 1981 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, the play was awarded the 1981 New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best American Play, and the 1982 Theatre World Award.

Called “wild and entertaining, yet dramatic and relatable”, the play examines the essence of family bonds; the relationship between sisters as friends; that “crazy” person in everyone’s family; and the narrow-mindedness of people in the South.

Director Michael Leeds explains: “This heart-warming comedy follows the intrigues and infidelities surrounding the three MaGrath sisters, who reunite in their hometown of Hazelhurst, Mississippi when Babe MaGrath is arrested for shooting her husband, ‘because she was havin’ a bad day,’” he says.  “ And the day doesn’t improve when her sister Lenny, trying to celebrate her 30th birthday, learns her horse has just been struck by lightning, and sister Meg shows up direct from the ‘looney bin’.  But despite their feuding and fussing, the sisters are determined to prevent Babe being hauled off to jail because, well, blood is thicker than molasses.”

Meredith Bartmon, Faiza Cherie, and Ursula Anderman will play Lenny, Meg, and Babe MaGrath.  Erin Pittleman, Samuel Floyd, and Nicholas Wilder round out Stage Door’s talented cast.

Crimes of the Heart will run from January 17 through February 23 at The Broward Stage Door Theatre in Coral Springs. The theatre is located at 8036 Sample Road, in Coral Springs.

Tickets for Crimes of the Heart are $38; $16 student tickets are also available.  Tickets may be purchased at the Broward Stage Door Theatre box office at 954-344-7765 or on line at www.stagedoorfl.org

“…Rollicking, sad, shocking, goofy, and thoughtful.
It is comic drama firing on all cylinders, a superb work…”
~The Washington Post~

Parade Productions will present Deborah Zoe Laufer’s The Last Schwartz from January 30th through February 23rd at the Mizner Park Cultural Arts Center’s Studio Theatre.

Focusing on a family in flux gathered together on one fateful weekend, the play received unanimously glowing reviews when it debuted at Florida Stage in 2002.

“I’m thrilled to have Parade Productions give The Last Schwartz a OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAproduction,” says playwright Deborah Zoe Laufer. “It’s a play that’s very close to my heart. It’s had a nice life — it’s had many productions, ran for over six months in LA, and had three options for commercial Off-Broadway productions (all of which fell through!). But it’s been a while since anyone gave it a whirl.  I hope everyone has a blast with it!”

Laufer has a deep fondness for South Florida and is very connected to its theatrical community. “The Last Schwartz was my first professional production,” she explains. “I fell in love with Florida Stage – it became my professional home for the next ten years. They gave every new play of mine a reading, produced three of my premieres; commissioned me; we collaborated on getting grants. I was down here at least once a year, frequently much more.

“Maybe because of that, I think I’ve had more productions of my plays in Florida than anywhere else,” she continues. “At least ten that I can think of – and several readings and short plays.  I’ve also taught for the past two years at the Playwright Development Program through the Miami- Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs. I was included in the One-Minute Play Festival as a Florida Playwright. It really is a second home (and my brother lives in Boca!).”

The Last Schwartz will be directed by Kim St. Leon, and will feature Ken Clement, Kim Ostrenko, Betsy Graver, Mark Della Ventura, Matt Stabile, and Candace Caplin.

The Last Schwartz will have one preview performance on January 30th, 2014.  It will open on January 31st, and will run through February 23rd, with performances Thursday through Saturday evenings at 7:30 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays at 3 p.m. Ticket prices are $35 ($30 for groups of 15 or more).

Tony Award-Winning Producer Normand Kurtz
Partners with Stage Door Theatre for
Pre-New York Engagement of
WiesenthalMasthd January 22 through March 16, 2014

For Immediate Release: December 5, 2013
Dugan_as_Simon 2(Coral Springs, FL) – Executive Producers Dee Wilson-Bunn of the Stage Door Theatre in South Florida today announced an addition to the company’s 2013-2014 Season – the award-winning pre-New York engagement of WIESENTHAL, written by and starring Tom Dugan. Produced by Tony Award-winner Normand Kurtz, who brought Broward audiences the record-breaking hit Too Jewish, WIESENTHAL tells the remarkable story of the life of Simon Wiesenthal, sometimes referred to as “The Jewish James Bond.” Told with hope, humanity and humor, the play follows Wiesenthal as he addresses a group of visitors on his last day at the Jewish Documentation Center in Vienna. As he reflects on his life and work, Wiesenthal recounts how he faced Hitler’s SS; how he endured the loss of family and friends; how he escaped a concentration camp only to be recaptured; and how, after liberation day, he began a remarkable journey for justice.

Directed by Jenny Sullivan, WIESENTHAL opens Wednesday, January 22, 2014 at the Broward Stage Door, 8036 W. Sample Road in Coral Springs. For tickets, call (954) 344-7765 or visit the company website at www.stagedoortheatre.com.

From the Producer of Too Jewish
WIESENTHAL marks Stage Door’s second collaboration with Kurtz, whose production of Too Jewish ran for 14-months. Kurtz won the Tony Award for new_simon_22the original production of The Mystery of Edwin Drood, and his production of Solitary Confinement with Stacy Keach broke the house record at the Kennedy Center and the Pasadena Playhouse. Also a highly respected music producer, Kurtz has been associated with recording superstars Billy Joel, David Bowie, Jethro Tull, The Jets, Lena Horne, Rupert Holmes, and Christina Aguilera, whom he discovered and co-managed. Kurtz produced Accomplice with Jason Alexander and The Best is Yet to Come Off-Broadway with fellow WIESENTHAL producer Karyl Lynn Burns (Drama Desk Award). WIESENTHAL is also produced in association with Rubicon Theatre in California and The Phoenix Theatre in Arizona.

Says Wilson-Bunn, “When Normand first approached us and we read the script and watched the video, we were struck by how absolutely engaging and entertaining this piece is! It conveys events of historical importance, but it also transcends biography and is truly a play with an incredible dramatic arc. The universality makes it possible for audiences to hear and understand the significance. Dave [Torres] and I were completely drawn into the story. We knew we had to share this with our audiences.”

Wiesenthal1“WIESENTHAL is an uplifting testament to the future,” says Kurtz, “a triumphant story of hope. Simon Wiesenthal went through a dark night of the soul – he had every reason imaginable to mistrust his fellow man. But as we travel with him on his journey, we experience an intelligent, flawed, funny and noble man who chooses action over self-pity, justice over revenge and who make perhaps the most difficult choice of all…to place his trust in us and in the future.”

Inspiration and History
Dugan, who was raised Irish Catholic, was inspired to write WIESENTHAL by his father, a war hero and liberator who received the Bronze Star and a Purple Heart for his service in World War II.

WIESENTHAL has receiving standing ovations and cheers at performances across the United States, with long runs at Rubicon Theatre in Ventura, California and Theatre 40 in Los Angeles, where the production won the L.A. Drama Critics’ Circle Award and was nominated for three Ovation Awards (“Best Actor”, “Best Director” and “Best Play”). The show was a Critic’s Choice in the L.A. Times and was praised for the “righteous stories here that you will not forget.” The Times described Dugan as “authoritative and engaging.” The Ventura County Star reviewer called Dugan’s performance “remarkable…drawn in unforgettable strokes,” and wrote that the play “gives equal weight to the heroic wisdom and wit with which Wiesenthal lived his long and purposeful life.”  The show was also a Critic’s Pick in Backstage, where Dugan’s work was called “masterful” and the writing “superlative”.

Tom Dugan
tom2Tom Dugan (Playwright/Actor) first appeared on television in the classic 1984 MTV video “Legs.” TV and film credits include “Bones,” “Friends,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” “The Practice,” “Chicago Hope,” “Just Shoot Me,” “Kindergarten Cop,” “Dave,” “Marked For Death,” “Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure,” “The Naked Gun,” “Hellraiser IV,” “Leprechaun III,” “Stuart Smalley Saves The Family,” “Beethoven II and “The Trial of Old Drum.” On the Los Angeles stage, Dugan appeared in The Man Who Came to Dinner, The Voice of The Prairie (Colony Theatre), Dublin Carol (Ensemble Theatre), Black Comedy (International City Theatre) and Black Coffee (Theatre 40). Regional and touring credits include Friends Like These (with Donna Mills), Misery (with Susan Rattan) and On Golden Pond (with Jack Klugman). Dugan recently recreated his award-winning portrayal of Antonio Salieri in Amadeus at The California Theatre (San Bernardino). He is also an accomplished playwright whose critically acclaimed one-man shows Oscar to Oscar, Robert E. Lee – Shades of Gray, and Frederick Douglass – In the Shadow of Slavery (starring Mel Johnson Jr.) have been produced in over two dozen cities across the United States. Dugan’s newest work The Ghosts of Mary Lincoln recently premiered at The Townsend Center for Performing Arts at Georgia West University. He lives in Woodland Hills with his wife Amy and two boys Eli and Miles.

Broward Stage Door Theatre
presents
9 to 5: The Musical
December 13 – January 19
NINE-TourLogoA musical celebration of friendship and revenge in the Rolodex era!

The Broward Stage Door Theatre will present the regional premiere of 9 to 5: The Musical from December 13th through January 19th.   Based on the 1980 hit movie starring Dolly Parton, the show features Parton’s original award-winning title song, as well as her Tony Award and Grammy-nominated score.  Outrageous, thought-provoking, and even a little romantic, 9 to 5: The Musical is a story of friendship, revenge, teaming up, and taking care of business!

Set in the ‘boys club’ workplace jungle of the ‘Mad Men’ era, the musical tells the tale of three dynamic – and very different – women, who conspire together to take control of their company –  and their lives, and learn there’s absolutely nothing they can’t do – even in a so-called ‘man’s world’.

Dan Kelley is extremely pleased to have been selected to direct the show: “Like many people of a certain age I was obsessed with the movie 9 to 5,” he says. ”When it was turned into a Broadway musical  I went to see it expecting the worst and left the theatre actually loving it. It stays true to the movie and adds some great songs by Dolly Parton. And,” he adds, “It’s proving to be the biggest seller of Stage Door’s season so far.”

Kelley and Stage Door’s Executive Producer/Artistic Director Derelle Bunn have assembled an excellent team to bring 9 to 5: The Musical to the popular theatre’s stage.   Carbonell Award-winners Chrissi Ardito and David Nagy will choreograph and musical direct the show.  “We have some familiar faces, and some exciting newcomers,” says Kelley.   “Katie Angel will be playing Violet (the Lily Tomlin role), Jennifer Hope will play Judy (the Jane Fonda role) and Jessica Crilley will be filling some big…shoes…as Doralee (the Dolly Parton role). Local favorite and Carbonell nominated actor Shane Tanner will play the villainous boss Franklyn Hart, and we are also pleased to have Cindy Pearce, Shenise Nunez, Elizabeth Sackett, Courtney Blackmun , Kari Grunberg, Christopher Herr, Andrew Schultz, Clint Hromsco, Marcus Davis, Bobby Underwood and Evan Mayer in this wonderful cast.

9 to 5: The Musical will run from December 13th through January 19th at The Broward Stage Door Theatre in Coral Springs. The theatre is located at 8036 Sample Road, in Coral Springs.

Tickets for 9 to 5: The Musical are $38; $16 student tickets are also available.  Tickets may be purchased at the Broward Stage Door Theatre box office at 954-344-7765 or on line at www.stagedoortheatre.com

selections ranging from Handel’s Messiah to Hanukah favorites

2013-Delray-Chorale-23
The Delray Beach Chorale’s holiday concert, Voices of the Season, will feature the 60-voice Chorale accompanied by a professional instrumental ensemble.  They will perform a selection of choruses and solos (sung by their Artist-in-Residence professionals) from Handel’s Messiah, as well as a number of seasonal favorites, including “Hark the Herald Angels Sing”, “Away in A Manger”, “Do You Hear What I Hear”, “Silent Night” (sung in German), and two Hanukah favorites, “Bashana Haba’ah” (sung in Hebrew), and “Festival of Flame”.  The concerts will take place at the Duncan Theatre in Lake Worth on Thursday, December 5th at 7:30 pm, and at the First Presbyterian Church in Delray Beach on Saturday, December 7th, at 3:00 pm.

The Chorale’s Artistic Director Eric Keiper is enthusiastic about both concert venues. “There’s not a bad seat in the house,” he says of the Duncan Theatre,” And the First Presbyterian Church provides beautifully live acoustics in a wonderfully pastoral setting. The seasonal music for this concert, both Chanukah and Christmas, is joyous, touching, celebratory, and familiar,” he continues. “Audiences are sure to leave our concerts with a song in their hearts and on their lips.”

Founded 30 years ago by a group of Delray Beach singers, the Chorale has consistently attracted talented amateur and professional vocalists from Fort Lauderdale to Palm Beach.  The group performs with an orchestral ensemble consisting of array of talented instrumentalists, including members of the former Florida Philharmonic.

The Delray Beach Chorale’s mission is to promote and encourage the art of singing and to share the experience of great music with the community. Although their initial focus was on the classics of great choral literature, both traditional and contemporary, over the past several years they have broadened their musical scope to include works of 20th century composers, including Rachmaninoff, Copland, and Gershwin.  Their April 2013 concert featuring the music of Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim sold out.

The Chorale also operates a Music Academy Program, the only one of its kind in the state.  Five professional musicians selected as Artists-in-Residence perform as soloists with the chorale, act as section leaders, and provide instruction to a select group of talented high school singers who also sing with the chorale.

Tickets for the Delray Beach Chorale’s Voices of the Season are $25 each; $5 for students, and can be purchased on-line at delraybeachchorale.org or by phone at 1-800-984-7282.

The South Florida Theatre League Celebrates its 20th Anniversary
by honoring the region’s Unsung Theatrical Heroes.

November 14 2013

The South Florida Theatre League’s Remy awards, named in honor of Remberto Cabrera, the former Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs’ Senior Cultural Administrator and Chief of Cultural Development, are given annually for Outstanding Service, and for Pioneering in South Florida regional theatre.

This year, in celebration of their 20th anniversary, the League has announced that the number of Remy Awards to be presented will increase from two to six. The four new categories will honor those members of the South Florida theatrical community who are not usually recognized by more traditional artistic awards.  The Remy Awards will be handed out at the League’s 20th Anniversary Celebration in December.

Along with the traditional Service and Pioneer Awards, Remys will be presented for Outstanding Theatre Company Board Member, Outstanding Contributor to Community Theatre, Outstanding Contributor to Children’s Theatre, and Outstanding Behind the Scenes Theatre Professional.

Theatres and theatre producers were asked to nominate individuals and organizations they felt were deserving of recognition, and a Theatre League committee was tasked with choosing the winners.

This year’s Remy Award recipients are:

The Pioneer AwardAdriana Perez, Miami Dade Cultural Affairs
For her role in supporting the development of new work and artists in our region, particularly her expansion of the Miami-Dade County Playwright Development Program – which was originally conceived by Rem Cabrera. Adriana also manages the Internal Cultural Exchange, Festivals, and Special Events and several programs for individual artists for the county. She works with The DeVos Institute of Arts Management at the Kennedy Center with its Capacity Building program, books the programs for school children at the Joseph Caleb Auditorium, and works in partnership with Miami-Dade County Public Schools’ Cultural Passport program.

Service AwardWLRN
For the countless ways WLRN promotes South Florida theatre. From Ed Bell’s weekly program Arts Beat to the comprehensive online arts calendar, to Cultural Connection which offers same day ½ price tickets to select productions, to sponsoring the WLRN and South Florida Theatre League’s Summer Theatre Fest, WLRN is and will continue to be the source for keeping everyone in South Florida aware of theatre in our community.

Outstanding Board MemberAlan Fein, City Theatre
For his outstanding service and dedication as founding Chair of City Theatre.  Alan has been with City Theatre from its inception in 1996, as has his firm, Stearns Weaver Miller Weissler Alhadeff & Sitterson, which each year has been the title sponsor for Summer Shorts. He is a past Chair of the Miami-Dade County Cultural Affairs Council and the Chair-Elect of the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, Trust Executive Board.
.
Outstanding Contributor to Children’s TheatreRosalie Grant, Sol Children’s Theatre
For the dedication and many contributions that she and Sol Children Theatre have made to our next generation of theatre professionals, providing them with a safe, secure, and highly professional theatrical training experience. Those young people in turn provide quality theatre experiences for audiences of all ages. Rosalie has been at the helm of Sol since it opened in 2002, and has directed over 60 plays and musicals.

Outstanding Contributor to Community TheatreDennis Lyzniak, Main Street Players
For his many and varied contributions to Main Street Players as grant writer, children’s camp coordinator, technical director, producer, master carpenter, playhouse manager, and whatever other particular need the theatre has at any given moment. “He is the backbone of our theater group and has become the face of our theater although he has never appeared on stage.” Dennis’ background in engineering, his knowledge and experience, not to mention his creativity is evident in his construction of some of the finest sets in South Florida.  And he does this with limited space at the Main Street Playhouse.  On top of all of this, he has also taken on the role of producer for several shows in the last couple of years.

Outstanding Behind the Scenes ContributorGeorge Schiavone, Photographer
For his behind the scenes work –  or as the case really is here – for his behind the lens work as a photographer extraordinaire. George has captured the work of countless theatre companies with an artistic flair – including (but not limited to)  GableStage, Mad Cat, Mosaic, Naked Stage, Promethean Theatre, Zoetic Stage, Broward College, Alliance Theatre Lab, and NWSA.

The Pioneer Award is bestowed upon individuals who have, over the years, taken the lead and contributed substantially to the health, growth and development of the South Florida theatre community.

The Service Award is given to either individuals or organizations in recognition of their invaluable and outstanding contributions made through time, talent, service, and expertise by taking the initiative and actively participating and contributing to the growth and development of the South Florida Theatre League.

The Theatre League’s 20th Anniversary Celebration and Annual Holiday Party promises to be an exciting event, as the Silver Palm Awards will also be presented that evening.  The party will take place at STACHE at 109 South West Second Avenue in Fort Lauderdale, on Monday, December 2nd at 7:30 pm.  Admission is $25 for non-Theatre League members; there is no charge for League members in good standing.

South Florida Favorite Steve Solomon to perform 3 different comedy shows in 3 different venues this season.

Tags

, , , , , , , , ,

Copy of NEW_HEAD_JPGSteve Solomon’s
award winning performances are a delicious mix of
comedy, cultures, and political incorrectness!

Steve Solomon has a busy South Florida winter ahead.  He will perform his Stand Up comedy at the Lyric Theatre in Stuart, on December 3rd; a prequel to his wildly successful My Mother’s Italian, My Father’s Jewish, & I’m in Therapy aptly and appropriately called My Mother’s Italian, My Father’s Jewish & I’m STILL in Therapy…the Chaos Continues…  will play from December 18th through December 22nd at the  Kravis Center for the Performing Arts – returning there by popular demand after last year’s sold out run; and his new show, Cannoli, Latkes & Guilt! The Therapy Continues… will open at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts and run from February 5th through February 16th.

STANDUP SHOT 1Solomon’s humor is universal, and universally loved.  Enhanced by his talent for impersonation and his mastery of different dialects – he does approximately 20 different characters and voices in his shows – his stories about his mixed heritage Italian/Jewish family resonate with everyone, no matter what their ethnicity, and have had audiences in stitches for over 3200 performances.  In fact his recent performances of Still in Therapy broke all box office and attendance records in the 28 year history of the Bristol Riverside Theatre in Philadelphia.

And as Solomon will tell you himself – he’s politically incorrect: bristol still steve on set
“Of course I am!  My entire family is politically incorrect; and that’s what helps make the shows so funny.  The very fact that we can go out to the theatre a spend an evening laughing at ourselves—and the antics of others – without fear of pending imprisonment helps make this the great country it is – or used to be before the hordes of  the politically correct police came banging on our doors.”

gpo_a2-d7k_8722He will also tell you his shows are full of stereotypes:
“Yep,” he says, in answer to his ‘politically correct’ critics “That was my life; stereotypical Italian and Jewish aunts who spent the entire day in house dresses stirring sauces and soup.   Since I’m describing my family as they were, why should anyone be offended by the stereotypes I portray when the people who ARE the stereotypes don’t get offended?

“In fact,” he continues, “Not once, in the 11 years my plays have been touring, have I ever received a complaint from a patron about how offended they were – indeed it’s usually the opposite.  I get dozens of e-mails and letters thanking me for the show and saying, ‘….that was my uncle….’  Or, ‘you nailed my Mom….’”  “…I think we grew up in the same house…”

Steve Solomon epitomizes the phrase ‘multi-faceted’.  He is an STAND UP SHOT 2 (4)accomplished pianist, composer, and lyricist; a member of MENSA, a painter and cartoonist (all his show logos are his own creations); a teacher – he has two Master’s degrees and an SDA and ABD degree in education and taught physics in Long Island, New York (where he eventually became Assistant to the Superintendent of Schools); and according to his wife he can fix anything except, according to Solomon, the way certain seniors drive in South Florida!

Solomon, who lives in Boynton Beach, is extremely happy to be performing again in his own ‘stomping grounds’: “Why do I come back to the Kravis Center or the Lyric or Coral Springs? The people! South Florida has some of the most sophisticated and delicious audiences in the country—they love to laugh and I love to perform for them. It’s that simple!”

Tickets for all performances are on sale now.  Please see the list below for performance venues, dates, times, and ticket prices.

The Popular Hit Musical Returns to South Florida for a Limited Run

From Lily Langtree to Cyndi Lauper and Betty Boop to Tina Turner, or from Rosie the Riveter to Britney Spears, female singers and pop stars and their music provide a vivid reflection of how much has changed for women since the beginning of the 20th century.  RESPECT: A Musical Journey of Women, which has evolved from a one-woman dissertation to an international hit musical revue since its debut, is an entertaining, exuberant, and exhilarating look at the lives of women as reflected in the popular music of the times.  RESPECT: A Musical Journey of Women will run from December 5th through January 5th at the Mizner Park Cultural Arts Center’s Studio Theatre in Boca Raton. DSCN1306a

This production, which is part of the BRTG’s newly extended season, is a return of the very first, wildly popular Florida incarnation of RESPECT and will be directed by the show’s original director, Peter J. Loewy. Featuring an ensemble cast of four and a live band, and combining excerpts of 60 songs including “Someone to Watch Over Me,” “I Will Survive,” “I Will Follow Him,” “These Boots are Made for Walking,” “What’s Love Got to Do with it,” and “Hero” with women’s own stories about finding dreams, lost love, relationship issues, entering the workforce, gaining independence, and more, RESPECT has resonated with audiences around the world. Men as well as women will have no trouble at all identifying with the messages of encouragement and empowerment that RESPECT portrays.

Loewy, who recently produced a successful revival of RESPECT in his own theatre in Metuchen, New Jersey, is excited to bring the show back to its ‘state of origin’.  “It’s a great show,” he explains.  “Everyone who sees it loves it.  It’s ‘up’, it’s fun, and yet it has a story to tell.  And I get as many positive comments about it from men, as I do from women!”

RESPECT definitely has a universal appeal. “What’s interesting – and exciting – to me about RESPECT is that it’s attractive to all audiences,” Loewy says.  “We get mothers with their daughters, and grandmothers with their granddaughters, not to mention their male counterparts!  When we played at the Cuillo Centre for the Arts and at the 26th Street Theatre in Wilton Manors, we would chat with people before and after the show.  Some of them had seen it 5 or more times!”

Sharyn PeoplesAlong with Sharyn Peoples, who recently received raveZiarra Washington reviews in Slow Burn Theatre Company’s production of Next to Normal, Carla Bordonada, Nicole Kinzel, and Ziarra Washington will make up the cast of RESPECT: A Musical Journey of Women; the show’s original musical director, Phil Hinton is also on board. champagne-web

Praise for RESPECT: A Musical Journey of Women:

Dorothy“I loved the show. It was the sound track of my life. Everyone should go see it!”  Patti LaBelle

“RESPECT is fun! Women love RESPECT. They Adore it!”  The Philadelphia Inquirer

“It’s  One Heck Of A Fun Ride, complete with some of your favorite songs of the 20th Century.  This is a Must See and Must Hear Musical that you will want to see more than once!” Broadwayworld.com

“ ‘Respect’ — and they ain’t lyin’! Musicals have been made from classic novels, campy movies and even comic strips, but it seems likely that RESPECT: A Musical Journey of Women is the first show to come from a social history textbook.”  Hap Erstein, Palm Beach Post/PalmBeachArtsPaper

“RESPECT…. is an engaging and entertaining look at the evolving roles of women in the 20th century. Using popular Top 40 hits, music, video images, and costumes, Dr. Marcic illustrates how, in the early part of the century, song lyrics resonated with women’s dependency and submissiveness; echoed their rebellion in the late 1960s; and reflected their independence in the 1990s.” Williams, MA newspaper

the Southeastern Premiere of
The Lyons

Nicky Silver’s ‘deliciously dark and hilarious’ comedy
to run December 6th – 22nd

The Women’s Theatre Project will open their tenth season – and their second season at the Willow Theatre in Sugar Sand Park – with the Southeastern premiere of The Lyons, Nicky Silver’s outrageously funny and stirring play about life, death, and family.  The Lyons will run from December 6th through December 22nd

As the Lyons family gathers together for a most unusual family reunion, Rita Lyons and her grown children come to find that despite being a family each of them is totally isolated. Afraid of closeness and solitude, they are pushed into a new arena – the human connection. The Lyons received glowing reviews when it ran on Broadway in 2012. New York Magazine’s Scott Brown said The Lyons is “simply trying to tell a funny, furious little tale of family annihilation with honesty, savagery, and humanity.”

Genie's headshot“I was immediately attracted to this script by Nicky Silver,” explains director Genie Croft. “Silver is known for his caustic characters in plays about broken families, and warped relationships – and the characters in The Lyons allow their very private and unedited thoughts to be spoken out loud, and those thoughts are so full of humor, insight, and pain. As The New York Times, said in their review:  “Hilariously frank, clear-sighted, compassionate and forgiving….laughter that rises in close and regular waves….””

“I am delighted that I was able to cast such a talented, creative group of actors to bring this funny, edgy, Broadway hit to life,” says Croft. “Multi-Carbonell Award winner Jessica K. Peterson will play Rita Lyons, the indomitable, frayed mother of this funny, furious family, and I’ve also cast Kevin Reilly, Clay Cartland, Jacqueline Laggy, Matthew Korinko, and Carolyn Johnson.

Jessica K. Peterson“It’s such a guilty pleasure to be able to laugh at such a dysfunctional family,” says Peterson. “Nicky Silver doesn’t spare anyone. I’m very grateful to Genie for picking plays with such great female roles.”

Jacqueline Laggy, who is the producer and one of the founding members of The Jacqueline LaggyWomen’s Theatre Project’s is also pleased: “I’m very excited to kick off our tenth season with a Southeastern premiere of a Broadway hit!” She says. “The Lyons is a very funny and witty play that examines the dynamics of a modern family in today’s society.  And the main character, Rita Lyons is a great and unique role for a middle aged woman who is about to enter into a new stage in her life.  I’m thrilled to be a part of the cast and crew involved in this production!”

The Lyons will run from December 6th through December 22nd, 2013, with performances on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 8 pm, and on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays at 2 p.m.

The Willow Theatre at Sugar Sand Park is located at 300 South Military Trail in Boca Raton, just south of Palmetto Park Road. Tickets for The Lyons are on sale now, and can be purchased at the Willow Theatre Box office: 561-347-3948. Tickets for all performances are $25.

Broward Stage Door Theatre
presents
The Last Night of Ballyhoo
November 15th to December 31st
Ballyhoo - On Stage copy

It’s December 1939 in Atlanta, Georgia. Gone with the Wind is having its world premiere, and Hitler is invading Poland, but many of Atlanta’s German Jews are much more concerned with who is going to Ballyhoo, the social event of the season. The Last Night of Ballyhoo centers around Atlanta’s Freitag family – and as events take various unexpected turns, the family is pulled apart and then mended together with plenty of romance, revelations, and comedy along the way.

The Broward Stage Door Theatre will present The Last Night of Ballyhoo from November 15th through December 31st.  The play, by Alfred Uhry, won the 1997 Tony Award for Best Play, the Drama League Award, and the Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Broadway Play.

“I’m always drawn to plays that show us what happens when cultures collide,” explains the show’s director Hugh Murphy. “The Last Night of Ballyhoo is a perfect example of that, doubled.  First you have the tension of the Freitags, a Jewish family living in the Deep South.  Then into that family comes Joe Farkas, an outsider from the North, who represents another source of tension.  Wrap all of that in the excitement of Atlanta on the weekend that Gone With The Wind opens. Originally written for the Cultural Olympiad that went along with the Atlanta Olympics, Ballyhoo is about assimilation, about how we perceive the “other”, and finally, about the meaning of family.  It’s one of Alfred Uhry’s most universal works and continues to delight audiences.”

Alfred Uhry is one of very few writers to receive an Academy Award, Tony Awards (2), and the Pulitzer Prize for dramatic writing. The Last Night of Ballyhoo is the second play in what is known as Uhry’s ‘Atlanta Trilogy’.  The first in the series, Driving Miss Daisy, won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1988, and the third, the 1998 musical Parade, about the 1913 trial of Jewish factory manager Leo Frank, earned Uhry a Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical.

The cast of The Last Night of Ballyhoo includes Larry Bramble, Janet Weakly, Alex Salup, Greyssan Felipe, Miki Edelman, Mary Sansone, and Stephen Kaiser.

The Last Night of Ballyhoo will run from November 15 through December 31st at The Broward Stage Door Theatre in Coral Springs.   The theatre is located at 8036 Sample Road, in Coral Springs.

Tickets for The Last Night of Ballyhoo are $38; $16 student tickets are also available.  Tickets may be purchased at the Broward Stage Door Theatre box office at 954-344-7765 or on line at www.stagedoortheatre.com.
