Avi Hoffman Returns to the
Stage Door Theatre after 20 years
in the original
Avi Hoffman’s Too Jewish?
July 19 – August 3 Only!

“Delightful tour of Jewish humor, language, and music. Avi has an instant rapport with his audience.  Touching, moving, and delightful.”  NY Newsday

July 5, 2017
MARGATE, FL:  20 years ago, multi-talented actor, director, comedian, singer, and Jewish cultural activist Avi Hoffman brought his award winning New York show Avi Hoffman’s Too Jewish?  to the Stage Door Theatre. His life was never the same. Now, he’s back! Avi Hoffman’s Too Jewish? will open on July 19th, and run through August 3rd.

Avi Hoffman’s Too Jewish? premiered Off-Broadway at New York’s Houseman Theatre in 1994 and has been presented thousands of times all over the world, as well as on the national PBS network.  Hoffman, a child of Holocaust survivors, was taught at an early age to appreciate the beauty and depth of Jewish literature, music, and tradition.  In Avi Hoffman’s Too Jewish? he combines a delightful mix of music, comedy, impersonations, and personal reminiscences to take his audiences on a journey through his own Jewish roots, and to illustrate the traditions and history of his beloved Yiddish culture.

“I couldn’t be more excited to be returning to Stage Door for the 20th anniversary of the production that changed my life,” Hoffman says. “With the incredible success of Too Jewish? at the Stage Door, we moved our family to Florida, and the rest, as they say, is history!  This will be the ORIGINAL production, with some new perspectives on how my life has dramatically changed since then.”

Avi Hoffman’s
Too Jewish? has won multiple awards, including Performer of the Year ’95 by NY Press Magazine, and the prestigious Los Angeles Ovation Award as Best Actor in a Musical in 2001. His recent portrayal of Willie Loman in the Yiddish production of Death of a Salesman garnered him a NY Drama Desk Award nomination for Best Actor in a Play, and was featured last summer at The Ashkenaz Festival in Toronto, the largest Yiddishkayt Festival in North America. He has also been nominated for both the NY Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle awards.  His 2012 Carbonell Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Musical was in recognition of his work as Wilbur Turnblad in Hairspray at Actors Playhouse in Miami. He performs worldwide and has proudly worked in nearly every professional South Florida theatre, garnering multiple awards and nominations. Hoffman was also featured in the hit Starz series ‘Magic City’ and Netflix’s ‘Bloodline’, as well as USA’s ‘The Glades’ and NBC’s ‘Law and Order’. His upcoming Yiddish film Shehita (Slaughter) will be featured in next season’s Miami Jewish Film Festival. Hoffman recently directed and performed in the world premiere of Unlikely Heroes, and performed in the Daryl Roth Florida tour of Stars of David. His two popular sequels to Too Jewish? – Too Jewish Two!, and Still Jewish After All These Years, have been seen throughout North America.

Stage Door Theatre
presents
Minnie’s Boys
(The Madcap Marx Brothers Musical)
June 30 – August 6

“My mother loved children – she would have given anything if I had been one.”  Groucho Marx

June 26, 2017
MARGATE, FL:  Julius, Adolph, Herbie, Leo, and Milton – names that are not at all familiar in the American comedic lexicon.  However, almost any mention of Groucho, Harpo, Zeppo, Chico, and Gummo will immediately elicit nods of recognition, and in most cases happy smiles.   Broward Stage Door Theatre will present the musical Minnie’s Boys – the tale of how the sons of Minnie Marx became The Marx Brothers – one of the most beloved and respected comedy acts in history.  Minnie’s Boys will open on June 30th and run through August 6th in Stage Door’s Theatre 2.

Based on the works of Groucho’s son, Arthur Marx, Minnie’s Boys is a song-filledcelebration of the Marx Brothers’ early years – the beginning of their rise to fame and fortune. But it is really the story of their mother, Minnie Marx, who shaped, molded, encouraged, cajoled, pushed and pulled them towards their eventual – and in her mind – inevitable success.

Peter J. Loewy will direct and choreograph Minnie’s Boys.  Loewy has directed the show before – at his own Fourm Theater in Metuchen, New Jersey; he recently directed Stage Door’s Carbonell-recommended production of Nine: “I love this show,” he says. It’s rarely done.  It has a great score by Larry Grossman, and it’s full of humor and heart.”

Loewy has cast Melody Lieberman as Minnie Marx, Jonathan Eisele as Julie Marx (Groucho), Michael Brown as Adolph Marx (Harpo), Will Nash Broyles as Leonard Marx (Chico), R. J. Magee as Herbie Marx (Zeppo), Steddy Amory as Milton Marx (Gummo), and Ben Prayz as Sam “Frenchie” Marx.  Also in the cast are Matthew Korinko, Sean Dorazio, Whitney Grace, Hilleah Neve, Ellie Pattison, Caterina Randazzo, and Ashlley Rodriguez.

Dave Nagy is the show’s musical director, and Kevin Black will assist Loewy with the choreography. Minnie’s Boys’ set design is by Michael McClain, lighting design is by Dean Landhuis, sound design by Rushnay Henry, costumes by Jerry Sturdefant, and Paul O’Donnell takes care of operations.  The show’s stage manager is Nancy Clay.

Minnie’s Boys will run from June 30 – August 6 at Stage Door Theatre. The theatre is located at 8036 Sample Road, in Margate.

Tickets for Minnie’s Boys are $48. (Student prices are also available with valid ID). Tickets may be purchased at the Broward Stage Door Theatre box office at 954-344-7765 or on line at www.stagedoorfl.org.

Funny Old Broads
July 6 – July 30

“… fast paced humor with musical comedy mixed in … delicious to watch …”
~ Angela Allyn, Chicago Stage Standard

June 13, 2017:

PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL:  Audiences looking for laughter this summer will find it at the PGA Arts Center when comediennes Caryn Bark, Pam Peterson, and Jan Slavin take the stage in Funny Old Broads, which will open on July 6th, and run through July 30th.  The show is part of the PGA Arts Center’s Summer Series.

Funny Old Broads is a delightful mixture of song and stand-up comedy, and features well-observed domestic humor interspersed with touching personal memories.  The Broads’ reflections on the absurdities of middle age and beyond, living in the ‘burbs’, and growing up in the sixties, not to mention Bark’s description of ‘middle aged Jewish ladies floundering through the Byzantine rules of Mah Jong’, will resonate with all audiences, no matter how old they are.

Funny Old Broads was created, as the multi-faceted (writer, comedienne, humorist, essayist, novelist, and playwright) Bark explains: “When I came to the shocking realization that I am older than Aunt Bee!”  It was her belief that she needed to embrace aging with laughter “…as well as a good support bra and Spanx.”

Bark enlisted Pam Peterson and Jan Slavin – both of whom are popular and critically acclaimed performers individually, and known together as The Boomer Babes – and built the show around the three of them.

Caryn Bark is the creator/performer of the critically acclaimed one woman show Diary of a Skokie Girl, which played to sold-out audiences in Chicago, Kansas City, Little Rock, Phoenix, and Canada’s Winnipeg Jewish Theater. She has appeared on Lifetime Channel’s “Girls’ Nite Out”, has opened for Joel Grey, and worked for HBO and Comedy Central. She has been heard on NPR’s “The Savvy Traveler”, has been a frequent guest commentator on Chicago Public Radio station WBEZ, and a regular on Marie Osmond’s radio show, “Marie and Friends”. She has performed at comedy clubs across the country, including Catch a Rising Star and The Improv. She is the author of the novel “Mittelschmerz”, a comic romance about Chicago’s Jewish community.

Pam Peterson is the recipient of Chicago’s prestigious After Dark Award for Outstanding Cabaret Artist.  She has performed with pops symphonies and big bands nationwide, as well as at numerous premiere Chicago venues, including Maxim’s, Park West, Davenports, Drury Lane, Bailiwick Theater, and The Peninsula.  A member of Actor’s Equity Association, Pam’s theater credits include Chicago’s Victory Garden’s Theater, and the St. Louis Muny, and has appeared in TV spots for many Fortune 500 companies, including Motorola, Walgreens, MacDonald’s, and Prudential.

Jan Slavin is a singer, writer and stand-up comic who has performed in clubs and theaters throughout Chicago. Comedy venues have included Laugh Factory, Zanies, Comedy Bowl and many others. Most recently, Jan performed stand-up at the Chicago Women’s Funny Festival and the Twin Cities Jewish Humor Festival. Jan performs regularly with Pam Peterson in their musical duo, The Boomer Babes which was created while sitting next to each other at a Passover Seder 13 years ago, during the gefilte fish course. Jan is a registered Music Together instructor, bringing the joy of music to young children. Her only regret is that she has never made homemade chicken soup but she is not about to start now.

“…Hilariously F-U-N-N-Y (enjoyment, amusement or lighthearted pleasure) and delightfully Q-U-I-R-K-Y (characterized by peculiar or unexpected traits)
night of theatre.”
Ilene Chalmers – DC Metro Theater Arts

May 30, 2017

PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL:  Entr’Acte Theatrix will present The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee at the PGA Arts Center in Palm Beach Gardens from June 22 – July 2.

“We are happy to be aligning ourselves with the PGA Arts Center, and veteran producers Dana Matthow and Philip Roy, helping to grow their new venue and their audience base to become a popular destination for theatre in mid and north Palm Beach County,” says Entr’Acte Theatrix founder and Executive Producer Vicki Halmos. “Entr’Acte has an excellent reputation as a launching pad for emerging talent in the County; several of our alumni are Carbonell Award-winners, and a number of others have gone on to receive their Equity cards, and to work on and off Broadway and in national touring companies. With Spelling Bee Entr’Acte will bring a more traditional theatrical choice to the Center’s audiences – it’s a ‘tongue in cheek’ parody – and a rollicking, funny, and heart-warming musical that will appeal to theatre patrons of all ages and stages; it will put adults in touch with their inner child, and will bring back memories of their own youth.   And the audience participation aspect of the show will add another layer of enjoyment for our audiences – who knows – they might be asked to come on stage and spell s-y-z-y-g-y.*”

Nominated for six Tony Awards, and winning 2, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee features an eclectic group of sixth graders (played by adult actors in uproariously comical caricatures), who arrive at a fictional spelling bee set in the geographically ambiguous Putnam Valley Middle School to vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime; the Bee is run by three equally quirky grown-ups. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter – one speller leaves! At least the losers get a juice box!

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee will be directed by Entr’Acte alumnus Carlo-Rufino Sabusap.  Sabusap has been with the company for10 years, and recently directed their production of Peter and the Star Catcher.

“The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is one of my all-time favorite shows,” Sabusap says. “It’s got a small cast, but a big heart, and tells so much about the experience of growing up, and the different types of relationships kids have with their parents.  Our production will hold on to the classic moments and themes of the show, while introducing some new things here and there that I haven’t seen in other productions.  Our amazing cast is sure to deliver a fun, hilarious, but touching experience for our audiences.”

Spelling Bee’s cast consists of Robyn Eli Brenner as William Barfee, Mary Grace Tesoriero as Olive Ostrovsky, Greg Halmos as Leaf Coneybear, Rosseroni Parris as Chip Tolentino, Rachel Ihasz as Marcy Park, Amanda Ruggiero as Logan Schwartzandgrubenierre, Lissen Ellington as Rona Lisa Peretti, David W. Lamphier as Douglas Panch, James White III as Mitch Mahoney, Megan Cires as Olive’s Mom and Others, and Patrick Kolta as Carl-Dad and Others. The production’s Musical Director is Anneliesa Tretheway, and the show’s Stage Manager is Sean Smyth.

MARGATE, FL:  Stage Door Theatre will present the darkly comedic musical, No Way to Treat a Lady beginning April 14th.  The production will run through May 28th in the popular Margate venue’s Theatre 2.

A blend of devilish humor, romance, murder, and music,  No Way to Treat a Lady features a publicity crazed actor turned serial killer, and the detective who pursues him: Actor Christopher “Kit” Gill, and Detective Morris Brummell have a lot in common – both dream of being headliners in the New York Times, and both are contending with difficult and overbearing mothers.  Gill’s mother issues lead to murder, and Brummell’s to struggles to find independence, love, and of course, a murderer.

The production, directed by Peter J. Loewy, will feature James Hansen as Kit Gill and Dustin Cunningham as Morris Brummell.  Andrea Arvanigian and Kimberly Abrams round out the cast.

Peter J. Loewy

“It’s a fun, funny, and clever show,” Loewy says. “It has a weirdly likeable homicidal maniac, a loveable if somewhat lost hero,  and an interesting take on the relationship between sons and their mothers. And the score is pure Broadway musical comedy.”

Playwright, composer, lyricist Douglas J. Cohen is the recipient of the Fred Ebb Award for Musical Theatre Songwriting,  two Richard Rodgers Awards, a Jonathan Larson Grant, the Gilman & Gonzalez-Falla Theatre Foundation Award, and the inaugural Noel Coward Prize.

No Way to Treat a Lady will run from April 14 – May 28 at Stage Door Theatre. The theatre is located at 8036 Sample Road, in Margate.

DELRAY BEACH, FL:  Princeton’s famous Triangle Club, the oldest touring collegiate musical-comedy troupe in the nation, will present its only South Florida performance on Thursday, February 2 at 7:30 p.m. at the Crest Theater at Old School Square, located at 51 North Swinton Avenue in Delray Beach.

The Triangle Show brings a unique theatrical experience to a very few locations each year and South Florida and the Crest Theatre have been selected to host this one time only performance of the company’s 2017 125th anniversary tour. Greece’d Lightning! opened in Princeton this past November to rave reviews and sold-out houses. Audiences were unanimous in their praise – citing the show as “truly wonderful and one of the best shows they have done ever… Triangle’s professional quality of original song, dance, humor, and musical composition has risen to delightful heights.”
ptc

For this landmark 125th Anniversary edition of the Triangle show, it’s all Greek – when a can-do baker from Greece’s smallest city-state tries to win the world’s first ever Olympics! But how can she compete when her sponsor is the Ruler of the Dead; she’s falling for Zeus’ athlete; and sports haven’t even been invented? From Icarus’ flight to Oedipus’ bedroom, join the greatest cast of characters Western civilization has ever known. Ending with Triangle’s famous all-male kick-line, Greece’d Lightning! will “get you to drachma like it’s hot!”

triangle_orange_logo-01For 125 years the Princeton Triangle Club has been creating professionally-produced, original student-written musicals in “The House that Triangle Built”, the renowned McCarter Theatre. In fact, The Princeton Triangle Club has the distinction of being the oldest touring (as well as the oldest co-ed) collegiate musical-comedy troupe in the United States, and the only co-ed collegiate troupe to take their show on a national tour each year.

The Triangle Club boasts a rich history and long list of alumni who have graduated to eminence in the creative arts, including F. Scott Fitzgerald ’17, Jimmy Stewart ’32, Jose Ferrer ’34, Wayne Rogers ’56, Clark Gesner ’60, Jeff Moss ’63, David Kelley ’79, Brooke Shields ’87, Wentworth Miller ’95, Ellie Kemper ’02, and Molly Ephraim ’08. The club’s seventy current members have diverse academic interests from astrophysics to economics, public policy to literature, and many plan on pursuing professional theater in some capacity.

Greece’d Lightning! offers audiences a one-time opportunity to see America’s most brilliant young minds and talents sing their hearts out and uphold a cherished musical tradition!

January 5, 2017
PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL:  Playhouse Productions’ producers Dana Matthow and Philip Roger Roy have chosen Alan Jacobson’s WaistWatchers The Musical! as the first production to play in their brand new PGA Arts Center in Palm Beach Gardens. The perennially popular musical will begin previews February 1st and run through through March 26th.

In the same energetic and fun spirit as Menopause The Musical®, WaistWatchers The Musical! – set in Cook’s Women’s Gym – takes a lighthearted look at four women ‘of a certain age’ dealing with assorted body image issues; it covers topics such as dieting, exercise, plastic surgery, and sex over the age of forty – areas of concern to women, and to men – of all ages.

Alan Jacobson

“When I first wrote Waist Watchers The Musical! I was looking to create a fun show that people of all ages, backgrounds, and lifestyles could enjoy,” the show’s creator Alan Jacobson explained recently. “I couldn’t think of anything more universal and topical than food. I truly don’t know anyone who doesn’t eat it! And people sure talk about and obsess over it. What has given me the greatest satisfaction is seeing how people respond to the show,” he says, “Not only with laughter and pleasure, but how so many people identify with the struggles, and are inspired to lead healthier lives. And to me, that is what theater is all about.

“And I’m extremely excited about the direction WaistWatchers has been going in,” Jacobson continues. “I had produced it on my own for a few years quite successfully, but felt that to take it to the next level I needed to turn over the producing responsibilities to other producers…producers who shared my passion for the show, who share my vision and the direction I have always seen it going in, and who have the resources and connections to thrust it further into the national and international arena.

“Dana Matthow and Phil Roy were exactly the right producers,” he explains.  “We just finished a 40-week national tour of the show, and though very successful, we still envision greater things. Together with our director, Matt Silva, we decided we would inject the show with Vince Di Mura’s new, original music set to my existing lyrics, incorporating more variety and a style all our own, and which would free us up to be more inventive with our staging and choreography.”

The musical will exercise the considerable musical and comedic abilities of four talented actresses:  Patti Gardner as Carla, Krissy Johnson as Cheryl, Stephanie Genovese as Cindy, and Valerie DiLorenzo as Connie.

Matt Silva will direct the production; the show’s musical director is Emily Whitaker, and choreography will be handled by Dani Tucci-Juraga.

jake-rockBOCA RATON, FL:  Jake Ehrenreich, playwright, author and academically recognized expert on Comedy, Catskills and the Holocaust, will present a completely updated version of his beloved autobiographical comedy musical A Jew Grows in Brooklyn, when A Jew Grows in Brooklyn 2.0 opens at the Mizner Park Cultural Arts Center in Boca Raton for a limited four week run from February 2 – 26. This production will be followed by an additional five performances at the Coral Springs Performing Arts Center from March 10-12.

Filled with new insights gained from his years of interviews, films, writing, and performing since the original 2006/2007 record breaking show debuted at the historic Lambs Theatre in the heart of Broadway, A Jew Grows in Brooklyn 2.0 creator and star Jake Ehrenreich brings a renewed and expanded knowledge of how Comedy, the Holocaust, and the Catskills affected his life, and the lives of so many others.

This new incarnation of the show, co-directed by Jon Huberth and Lisa Ehrenreich, further explores how Ehrenreich, who grew up in Brooklyn in the 1960’s-70’s, struggled with his family’s survivor history, and later with both his sisters and mother’s early Alzheimer’s disease – “and how we all must handle our individual challenges in life.” The production makes use of extensive multi-media, music and comedy to entertainingly convey its uplifting message. Ehrenreich’s extraordinary tour de force performance, filled with laughter, tears and first class musicianship, resonates with audiences of all ages.
_mg_2460-at-piano-w-tie“I wanted to tell a very serious story – but make it accessible with as much joy and laughter and music as possible”. Ehrenreich has explained.

He has appeared on Broadway in Dancin’, Barnum and They’re Playing Our Song and toured internationally as Ringo in Beatlemania. Praise for Jake Ehrenreich and A Jew Grows in Brooklyn:

The New York Times compared Ehrenreich to Billy Crystal and Bill Murray,  and raved: A Jew Grows in Brooklyn is “funny – beautiful – affectionate…touching joy and sorrow experiences lie behind and beneath every anecdote and joke.”

The Philadelphia Inquirer called the show “A universally uplifting treasure – in the same elevated company as Billy Crystal’s 700 Sundays, and Chaz Palminteri’s A Bronx Tale.”

The Los Angeles Times weighed in on the entertainment as well as the cultural importance of the show: “Ehrenreich is an engaging and thoughtful raconteur who weaves philosophy into personal history – his insight into the legacy of the classic Borscht Belt entertainers is elegant in its simplicity.”

“I am a wife-made man.” ~ Danny Kaye

December 15, 2016
BOCA RATON, FL:  Danny Kaye was world famous as a star of Vaudeville, theatre, film, and television; Sylvia Fine was his primary songwriter, his mentor, his motivator, and his wife.  These two – each strong and fascinating personalities in their own right – are the subjects of Danny Kaye and Sylvia:  A Musical Love Story, which will open at the Willow Theater in Boca Raton’s Sugar Sand Park on January 13th, and run through January 29th.   The show has played to sold out houses in London, New York, and Washington, D.C.

The young, undisciplined comic Danny Kaminsky met aspiring songwriter Sylvia Fine at an audition for The Straw Hat Review in 1939. (Fine had written the music and lyrics for the show). After a whirlwind courtship they were married in Ft. Lauderdale in January 1940; under Sylvia’s guidance, Danny Kaye rose from an impoverished improvisational comic to become an international star.

Larry Buzzeo and Katie Angell Thomas will reunite to play Danny

Kaye and Sylvia Fine – their performances in  The Jazz Singer, were lauded by audiences and critics alike.  This will be the second show mounted by Black Box Booking and Hy Juter. Their January 2016 production of the aforementioned production, The Jazz Singer, sold out every performance at the Willow Theatre.

“If Danny Kaye had not been born,” a Hollywood writer once observed, “no one could possibly have invented him, it would have been stretching credibility far past the breaking point.”  Kaye was a virtuoso entertainer – an actor, a singer, a dancer, a comedian and a clown. He won two honorary Oscars, an Emmy, a Peabody Award, a Golden Globe, the French Legion of Honor, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.  Kaye was a licensed pilot (in 1979 he made the Guinness Book of Records by piloting a private jet to 65 cities in the U.S. and Canada in 5 days), a gourmet chef, and a symphony conductor – although he could not read a note of music. And he was the first Good Will Ambassador to UNICEF.

Sylvia Fine was a gifted writer, producer, pianist, lyricist, and Oscar-nominated composer in her own right. She wrote many of Kaye’s best known songs and sketches and contributed numerous pieces to Kaye’s various movies, radio, and television programs.

Danny Kaye and Sylvia: A Musical Love Story, written by Robert McElwaine, includes a number of Kaye’s most famous songs – many of them written by Fine – including ‘Tchaikovsky’, ‘Balling the Jack’, and ‘Anatole of Paris’. McElwaine and Kaye met when McElwaine worked as director of advertising and publicity at the Goldwyn Studios in the 1950s; he subsequently became the star’s publicist and confidant for 20 years.  Danny Kaye and Sylvia explores the romance, the talent, and conflict that made them such a successful – and volatile couple.

The show’s director, Larry K. Bramble has also designed the set and the lighting for the production.  Musical direction is by Annaliesa Trethewey, sound design by Jason Hesler, and costumes are by Mary Ellen Many.

Danny Kaye and Sylvia will run from January 13 through January 29 at the Willow Theatre in Sugar Sand Park.  Tickets are $35; group rates (6 or more tickets purchased in one transaction) are $30.  Tickets can be purchased on line at http://www.willowtheatre.org/danny-and-sylvia   or by phone at 561-347-3948.

“Who knew that a musical about the life of the inventor of the printing press
could have so many laughs?”
 Jason Zinoman NY Times

August 23, 2016

BOCA RATON, FLORIDA:  Evening Star Productions will leap even farther back into history,  jumping from William Shakespeare (their recent production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream played to appreciative audiences for three weeks in August) to Johannes Gutenberg when they produce Anthony King and Scott Brown’s Gutenberg!  The Musical! which will open on September 15th, and run through October 2nd at Boca Raton’s Sol Theatre.

This uproarious spoof tells the story of two passionate musical theatre writers – desperate and bravely untalented – who perform a backer’s audition for their new musical about the inventor of the printing press. With an unending supply of enthusiasm, the two authors sing all the songs and play all the parts in their crass historical epic.

Gutenberg! The Musical! opened at the Actor’s Playhouse in January 2007; it was nominated for the 2007 Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Musical and the 2007 Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding New Off-Broadway Musical, and its authors were nominated for the 2007 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Book of a Musical.

Ben Sandomir

Gutenberg’s director, Ben Sandomir, explains the play this way: “Bud and Doug are putting on a backer’s audition for their new musical about the inventor of the printing press, Johannes Gutenberg. Since research materials on Johannes are “scant” they fill in the blanks with “historical fiction”.

“Bud and Doug are played by two local South Florida actors, Robyn Eli Brenner and Alex Weiss,” he continues.   “They also play all 18 characters in the musical, a mighty but fitting task for a play about two artists shooting for the stars. As the director, I’ve spent the last few months trying to figure out how Bud and Doug can transport the audience to the word of their magnum opus on a shoestring budget inside a small black box theatre. I think our audiences will laugh and be entertained and fall in love with these hopeless optimists, as I have.”

Robyn Eli Brenner“As an actor you always want the opportunity to do something like Gutenberg – a two-man, full length musical.” Robyn Eli Brenner says. “And I’m extremely proud and honored to be doing such a funny piece of theatre – one that audiences probably wouldn’t get to see if it weren’t for this production.”

ALEX

Alex Weiss

Alex Weiss, who plays Doug, agrees: “I’m so excited to be working with this extremely talented cast and crew on Gutenberg! The Musical!” he says. “With Ben’s direction and unique perspective, I really think we will be bringing something to South Florida that’s never been done before. Plus, I get to play a variety of different characters including a woman named after a font. It’s the little things!”

Weiss has also offered a thought from the enthusiastic perspective of his character, Doug Simon:   “I can’t wait to bring our musical to the people! Bud and I have always wanted to be on Broadway and I truly feel like this is the first and only step that we will need to get there.”

Gutenberg! The Musical! will run from September 15 – October 2 at Sol Theatre in Boca Raton. Tickets are $25 and $10 for students. Group rates are also available. Tickets are on sale now, and can be purchased  by calling 561-447-8829 or on line at www.eveningstarproductions.org.
