LAUDERHILL, FL:  Stage Door Theatre’s first production at Lauderhill Performing Arts Center (LPAC), their brand new, state-of-the-art home, will be the multiple Tony Award-winning La Cage Aux Folles.   The production will open on August 31st and run through September 23rd.   (The theatre will celebrate the move to their new home at a Gala Party on September 1st – details to be announced.)

After twenty years of un-wedded bliss, Georges and Albin, two men partnered for better-or-worse experience a bit of both when Georges’ son (fathered during a one-night fling) announces his impending marriage to the daughter of a bigoted, right-wing politician.  Further complicating the situation is the ‘family business’: Albin and Georges run a drag nightclub in St. Tropez, where Albin is the ‘star’ performer, ZaZa.

The musical, based on the French play by Jean Poiret, was adapted for the stage by Broadway royalty – Harvey Fierstein wrote the book, and Jerry Herman provided the music and lyrics.  The original production received nine Tony nominations, and won six, including Best Musical, Best Score, and Best Book.  It is the first musical to win the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical twice.

Carbonell nominee (as both actor and director) Bruce Linser will direct the production: “I see this show as somewhat of a period piece,” Linser explains. “It is set in the 70s, a time when gay people and drag queens were still fighting to come out of the shadows. This story of a young straight man forcing his parents to change themselves and their lives so drastically – or these two gay men being willing to suffer that humiliation so willingly – would seem ridiculous or even downright hateful today. Not that gay people aren’t still marginalized. With lawsuits around gay wedding cakes and “religious freedom” laws, there is definitely a culture of fear and hatred for the LGBT community, and there are looming signs of it being allowed to grow under the current administration in Washington DC. So in a way this production of this show at this time is a bit of a warning. “Those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it”, as they say. We need to remember where we’ve been, so we can prevent ourselves from going there again in the future. And that’s for all of us – gay and straight alike. What we need right now is empathy and understanding for each other, and what better way to explore that than through the joy and thoughtfulness that is musical theatre?

“To that end, we are following much more of the style of the most recent revival of the show,” he continues.  “Harvey Fierstein, who wrote the book to La Cage, has said that the original production, while glamorous and beautiful, wasn’t really “right” for the world of the play. It was glitzed and glittered up for Broadway, in large part to make it palatable and acceptable for the Broadway audience at the time. And it worked – it’s a beloved, Tony-winning show, gay relationships now enjoy widespread support and acceptance, and drag queens have their own TV shows! Which is why we can now take that shiny veneer off of the show, at least a little bit, so we can explore more of the darker truth that the original movie and show were revealing. Don’t get me wrong – there will still be gorgeous costumes and fabulous dance numbers. It’s a musical, after all! But we’re also looking for the heart and soul underneath all of that … the fear and love that drives these people to be who they are and do what they do. The humanity of these characters and their relationships. That, to me, makes for interesting, powerful, and entertaining theatre.”

Linser has assembled a top-notch cast to populate the Riviera town of St. Tropez:  Larry Buzzeo will play Albin/ZaZa, and Jamie Parnell will play Georges.  2017 Carbonell Award-winner Elijah Word will play Jacob, and Connor Delves will play Jean-Michel.  Dalia Aleman and James Skiba, who recently starred in Stage Door’s production of Victor/Victoria will also be featured. Other cast members include 2017 Carbonell nominee Kat Gold, Alexandra Van Hasselt, JR Coley, Rebeca Diaz, Sean Davis, Nicole Kinzel, Kevin Lozano, Courtney Poston, Dyllan Vallier, Stephen Hohendorf, Korey Harlow, Jonathan Eisele, Johanna Moise, and Cat Pagano.

Paul Reekie will serve as the production’s Musical Director; Choreography is by Danny Durr, and the show’s Assistant Choreographer is Jenny Hegarty.  Scenic Design is by Michael McLain; Lighting Design is by Ardean Landhuis; Sound Design is by King Raymonvil; and Costumes are by Jerry Sturdevant.  The production’s Stage Manager is Nancy Clay.

La Cage Aux Folles will run from August 31 to September 24 at Stage Door Theatre’s new location, the Lauderhill Performing Arts Center (LPAC). The theatre is located at 3800 NW 11th Place, Lauderhill (33311), in the Central Broward Regional Park on the North East corner of Sunrise Boulevard and 441 (State Road 7).

(LPAC will charge $5 service fee per ticket, however if a package of four Stage Door shows is purchased the service fees will be waived.) BOCA RATON, FL:   Into the Woods, the multi-award-winning (Tony Awards, Drama Desk Awards, Olivier Awards) musical by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine, skillfully interweaves several classic fairy tales into one epic story that shows what happens when things get real in the fairy-tale world. Lightning Bolt Productions upcoming production of this acclaimed Broadway musical will run at the West Boca Performing Arts Center at West Boca High School* from June 8th through 17th. 

Sondheim and Lapine’s tale involves a baker and his wife who, unable to have the children they so badly desire, agree to complete a number of “errands” for a witch who promises to grant them their wish if they’re successful. During their journey, they encounter Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, Cinderella and Jack (of Beanstalk notoriety) – each of whom has their own wish. All the storybook characters discover that wishes granted often come with a hefty price.

Jessie Hoffman, Lightning Bolt’s founder and Artistic Director, who recently directed the young company’s well received production of Young Frankenstein, will once again take on dual duties for the production –  as the show’s director, as well as the role of Cinderella:

“I was introduced to Into the Woods back in middle school,” Hoffman explains. “As part of our assignment for musical theater class to learn the job of a stage manager, we had to watch the professional video with the original Broadway cast, and correctly call the show for the entire opening number. The show instantly fascinated me; seeing just the opening number wasn’t enough, and so I found a copy of the video and watched the whole thing. I ended up watching that video a million times. I had every role memorized.

“I quickly noticed (as is the case with many shows by Stephen Sondheim) that when it came to Into the Woods people either loved it or hated it, there was no in-between. I could never understand why. It was such a beautiful show with an incredible message and an engaging story. How could anyone listen to those lyrics, hear the meaning behind them, and not love this musical? Years later, when I was 18, I was fortunate enough to be cast in Into the Woods as Little Red – it was an amazing experience.

“Over the years, I’ve continued to see other productions done by various theater companies, and it’s always done so well, but it’s always done the same way”, Hoffman says. “I had never seen the show looked at from another perspective until I stumbled across some clips from a production done in Regent’s Park back in 2010 and it opened my eyes to the show in a whole new way. This production was so different, so unique, modernized yet true to what the show has always been. The heart of it was still there, but it was new and exciting.

“Seeing clips from that production inspired me and brought back the love I’ve always had for this show in an entirely new way,” she continues. “I decided in that moment I was going to put on a production of Into the Woods that was closer to that version, while making it my own and adding my own heart to it. My goal is for people who have seen the show as many times as I have to see it in an entirely new light, and for people who have never seen the show before to fall in love with it the same way I did when I was 12 years old.

“This show literally has a character for everyone, someone each person in that audience can find themselves in and relate to. Sure, it’s a story about a bunch of fairy tale characters with magical powers and beanstalks to climb but if anything, these characters are more real than any you’d find in any other musical.

“Everyone has their own “wolf” that crosses their path at some point in their life. Everyone dreams of things that aren’t quite what they thought they’d be once that wish actually comes true and realizes that maybe something in-between their life before that wish and their life after is what will truly bring them happiness. Everyone experiences loss, but everyone also learns that truly, no one is alone… even if you feel like you are. Everyone has that moment in their life where they learn that “nice” is different than “good” and sometimes things aren’t always what they seem, and sometimes people aren’t always what they seem, but these are all just lessons that help you the next time life sends you into the woods. It’s not what you go through in life that shapes who you are, it’s how you choose handle it, it’s realizing there truly is “more to learn of what you know”, and finding the courage inside yourself to always be ready for the next journey. I hope that through my direction of this show, each audience member can find their moment in the woods that they connect to.”

Along with Hoffman as Cinderella, Lightning Bolt’s Into the Woods cast includes Giustino Garcia (The Narrator), Renee Elizabeth Turner (The Witch), Maxwell Miller (The Baker), Savannah Marino (The Baker’s Wife), Sarah Rose Knoche (Little Red Riding Hood), Aaron Bravo (Cinderella’s Prince/Wolf), Murphy Hayes (The Mysterious Man), Elijah R. Pearson-Martinez (Jack), Jessica McFadden (Jack’s Mother),Joel Iglesia (Rapunzel’s Prince), Irma Gloria (Rapunzel/Cinderella’s Mother); Myria Jean Baum (Stepmother/Granny), Victoria Kuhns (Florinda), Shannon Motherwell (Lucinda), and Sven Ballarte (The Steward).

Phil Hinton will provide Musical Direction for Into the Woods, and Michael Biggs will serve as the show’s Choreographer and Stage Manager.  Assistant Stage Manager (and House Manager) is Cheryl Crout; Sound Design is by Traci Watkins, Costume and Prop Design is by Myria Jean Baum.  Set Design is by Jessie Hoffman; Set Construction is by Mike Versetti, and Tech is by Jonathan Cabrera and the West Boca Performing Arts Tech Crew. Lance Blank is the Theatre Manager.

BOCA RATON, FL:  Lightning Bolt Productions’ Young Frankenstein – The Mel Brooks Musical will open at the West Boca Performing Arts Center at West Boca High School* on April 13th, and run through April 22nd.

A wickedly inspired re-imagining of the Frankenstein legend, Mel Brooks’ comedy masterpiece follows bright young Dr. Frankenstein (that’s Fronkensteen!) as he attempts to complete his grandfather’s masterwork and bring a corpse to life. Together with his oddly shaped and endearing helper Igor (that’s Eye-gor), his curvaceous lab assistant Inga, and in spite of his incredibly self-involved madcap fiancé Elizabeth, Frankenstein succeeds in creating a monster — but not without scary and quite often hilarious complications.

Young Frankenstein was Mel Brooks’ follow-up to his hit musical The Producers, and audience reaction to the production was consistently positive, much to his delight: “I love what they do,” Brooks said in an interview shortly after the show opened. “The audience knows Young Frankenstein the movie; they didn’t know The Producers. They all neigh when anyone on stage says “Frau Blucher”. And they can’t wait for the Blind Hermit to spill the hot soup on the monster’s lap. It’s great to see the audience play ping-pong with the actors.”

Lightning Bolt founder, and the show’s director Jessie Hoffman has drawn upon a special piece of the film’s history to inspire and inform her directorial choices: “I think it’s safe to say that everyone has a special place in their heart for Gene Wilder,” she explains. “Throughout the filming process of Young Frankenstein he and Mel Brooks only had one disagreement, which would probably shock most fans of the movie. Mel Brooks strongly disliked Wilder’s idea to include a scene where Fredrick Frankenstein performed “Puttin’ On The Ritz” with the monster. Of course, once the scene was done, Brooks admitted that he’d been wrong and stated that it was the best thing in the movie.

“As a director, it’s my job to find the difficult balance of staying true to what the piece is meant to be, while making it my own,” she continues. “Because of this, Young Frankenstein might very well be the most difficult show I’ve ever directed, but also, the most rewarding. If I can learn anything from this production, it’s to trust my instincts, my ideas, and myself no matter what others say. To trust my humor and my creativity, because if Gene hadn’t trusted his, one of the most beloved, hilarious, and iconic moments of this film wouldn’t exist. It’s truly amazing how something that can bring such laughter, joy, and amusement to so many people can also teach such an important life lesson, and I’m truly grateful to Gene Wilder for helping me learn that.”

Nicole Stav

Lightning Bolt has enlisted Nicole Stav to help shepherd the fledgling theatre company’s show onto the stage – she will serve as the production’s Stage Manager, and has designed many aspects of the show including the Set, Lighting, Costume, and Props: “I’m truly excited to be able to blend my passion for theatre with my skills in business management,” she says. “It’s not very often that we get to do what we love, but when you do, it never really feels like work. Spearheading this new production company has been rewarding in so many ways, and the relationships we’re forming within the South Florida Theatre Industry are invaluable, to say the very least. Managing such a large cast while simultaneously taking care of props, costumes, lighting design, and set design has been challenging; however, I feel that the hard work we’ve put in will be so obvious once everyone sees the show!”

Young Frankenstein cast members include Max Miller (Frederick Frankenstein), Jonathan Cabrera (Igor), Jessie Hoffman (Inga), Josh Nelson (The Creature), Eileen Flanagan Parente (Frau Blucher), Taryn Bagdasarian (Elizabeth), Larry Bresslerr (Inspector Kemp), and Murphy Hayes (The Hermit, etc.).  Also cast are Michael Reizburg, Ravelle Miller, Victoria Kuhns, Angela Moormann-Davis, Valerie Bressler, Aaron Bravo, and Christian Matthiesen.

MARGATE, FL:  Time Step, award-winning Director/Choreographer Kevin Black’s newest creation, will have its World Premiere at Broward Stage Door Theatre on March 30th.  Black, along with Musical Director Ben Bagby have combined their talents to celebrate a unique American dance phenomenon. The production will run through May 6th.

The origins of the Time Step – that unmistakeable rhythmic tap combination – can be traced back to the Vaudeville era in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.  Dancers would repeat a ‘time step’, usually for six measures of music, and then perform two measures of improvised steps choreographed in the moment to set the pace of the music. A true mix of European Jig, Reel Steps, Clog, and African Rhythms, often spontaneously combined, this improvisation created an exciting new dance style. It was, some say, the creation of tap in America as a theatrical art form.  The Time Step reached a peak in popularity in the 1920s and 1930s, when tap dancers began performing with large orchestras and needed a way to communicate tempo to the musicians. 

Kevin Black, whose creativity seems to know no bounds, has created a brand-new show featuring the Time Step, along with other forms of dance including Irish Celtic, Flamenco, Stomp, and Clogging.   The production will also feature numbers from the classic Broadway tap shows 42nd Street and Crazy For You, as well as tributes to Big Band Jazz performers such as The Nicholas Brothers, Swing Music, and Sing, Sing, Sing.

“This production is a true collaboration,” Black explained recently. “Along with our amazing Musical Director and Arranger Ben Bagby, I have a cast and crew that has contributed so much to the show’s development.  Our choreography is most definitely a result of incredible teamwork – Allison C. Scott, Sebastian Goldberg, Ashley Bachner, McKayla Cephas, and Alessandra Torres have all poured their creativity, talent, and expertise into this show.  It’s a true labor of love, and I know our Stage Door audiences are in for a treat.”

Black has assembled a multi-talented dream team to showcase the project.  Along with participating choreographers Sebastian Goldberg and Allison C. Scott, he has cast Ariel Siedman-Wright, MacKenzie Cutcliffe, Nathaniel J. Washington, and Stephen Potter to interpret everything from Flamenco to Stomp.  They will be joined by vocalists Sandra Marante and Matt Staley.  Staley and fellow cast member Ariel Siedman-Wright will accompany the Celtic and Western sections of the production on acoustic guitar and fiddle.

Time Step’s Set and Lighting Design is by Paul O’Donnell, who will also serve as the show’s Technical Director.   Costume Design is by Jerry Sturdefant, and Jose-Luis Ramos, the production’s Stage Manager, will run the show’s sound, lights, and projections: “One man in the booth!” Black exclaims.

Ben Bagby was in the Original Broadway Cast of My One & Only and in the First National Tour of Dreamgirls. He is also a featured dancer in the “Blues Brother’s Movie” and in the Movie “Eddie” starring Whoopi Goldberg. Choreography credits include television commercials for Levi’s 501 Jeans, Harrah’s Casino, and Mazda. He has performed on cruise ships for Royal Caribbean and Carnival, and in local productions of Aida, Chicago, Spelling Bee, Hairspray, The Life, Smokey Joe’s Café, and West Side Story. He has recorded vocals for several indie record labels and is an acting and voice coach when he’s not performing.

BOCA RATON, FL:  Enchantment will rule at Sol Theatre beginning March 1st, when Cinderella, Richard Rodgers’ and Oscar Hammerstein II’s magical musical adaptation of the classic fairy tale is brought to life in the intimate Boca Raton Theatre. The production will run through March 18th.

Cinderella is a prime example of a classic musical, although it was originally commissioned by CBS as a television vehicle for Julie Andrews in 1956.  “Cinderella is [another] example of what musical theatre is all about”, composer Richard Rodgers once explained. “No matter what the medium, a score is more than a collection of individual songs.  It is, or should be, a cohesive entity whose words and music are believable expressions of the characters singing them.  When the lonely, bullied heroine sings “In My Own Little Corner”, it’s not merely a song, it’s a revelation of the girl herself.  When she finishes, we know something more about her than we did before: her sense of humor, her naïve optimism, her imagination, and her relationship to the rest of her family.”

The production will be directed by Rosalie Grant, Sol’s founder and artistic director. The award-winning Broadway production of Cinderella is currently on tour across the United States, so obtaining the rights was a definite coup for Sol and Grant:

“I have directed three different versions of Cinderella, but this version has been at the top of my bucket list for years!” she says.  “Finally obtaining the rights was a dream come true for me!  I am absolutely having the time of my life directing this talented, wonderful and dedicated cast of young actors, and, as always, I love collaborating with our designers, each one a dear friend.

“But I think what I most look forward to is bringing this fairy tale love story to life for the many children who will attend and be transported to another time and place where dreams are possible and do come true! We could all use a little magic in this world so full of chaos and unhappiness,” she continues. “I love the message from Cindy and her Godmother … “It’s possible!  Impossible things are happening every day!””

Grant’s young cast members include Isabella Welch as Cinderella and Trevor Whitfield as The Prince. Ethan Barrocas will play The King, and Kimmy Wilkinson his Queen.  Other cast members include Faith Alfieri (Stepmother), Emily Singer (Godmother), Catalina Echeverria, Genesis Soto-Alfonso, Sami Mascaro, Monique Whitfield, Megan Mascaro, Mia Salerno, and Dakota Hachimi.

Cinderella’s Musical Director is Anthony Campisi, with choreography by Sara Elizabeth Grant, and lighting design by Ardean Landhuis. The show’s Scenic Designer is Kate McVay; Costume Design is by Briana Earhart; and Makeup Design by Kylie Lawrence, Ava Cavasos and Natalie Macadar.  The production’s Stage Manager is Kylie Lawrence.

Boca Raton’s Sol Children Theatre is a not-for-profit theatre organization founded by veteran director and actor Rosalie Grant sixteen years ago.  The company’s mission is to provide children with a safe, secure, and highly professional theatre experience.  Those children in then in turn provide quality theatre experiences for audiences.

MARGATE, FL: The World Premiere of Imagine – A Beatles Celebration, created by award-winning director/choreographer Kevin Black, will open at Stage Door Theatre on February 2nd and run through March 11th.  Black, the creator of numerous Stage Door hits, such as The Soul of Motor City, Swing! Swing! Swing! and What’s New Pussycat? has taken the music we all remember by the band that changed the face of music, and put his own inimitable spin on it.

The Beatles left a permanent mark in history with their vast songbook of now timeless classics.  Imagine honors their incredible legacy with a joyous celebration of these legendary musical innovators. More than 24 Beatles tunes are included in the production: “Twist and Shout”, “I Saw Her Standing There”, “Hard Day’s Night”, “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”, “Blackbird”, “Day Tripper”, “Let It Be”, and Hey Jude”, are just a few of the iconic songs that will be interpreted by a cast of five talented singers and a live three-piece band.

And the world will live as one.”  “This message by John Lennon, was the engine that drove me to create Imagine,” Kevin Black explains. “John, Paul, George, and Ringo sang about what we felt, what we thought, what we hoped to do, and how love could change every one of us. The world was fun with them in it!

“Creating this show has become a unique challenge – there are so many great tunes to choose from,” he continues. “I mean this could easily be a three act show with all the material!  Imagine presents these timeless classics in new and refreshing forms; my overall goal is to present an evening of great music with a message of hope and peace for the future.”

Black has chosen Charrise Shields, Cameron Jordan, Rio Peterson, Jordana Forrest, and Mario Castro to interpret the music that shaped and influenced so many lives and in some cases, musical careers.  They will be backed by pianist Sarah Statler, who most recently wowed audiences with both her musical prowess and strong vocals in Black’s Tickling the Ivories.  She’ll be joined by percussionist Roy Fantel, and guitarist/bassist Rupert Ziawinski.

The Musical Director for Imagine is Ben Bagby and the Assistant Musical Director is Sarah Statler. The show’s Set Design is by Stage Door Scenic Design and Kevin Black. Lighting is by Ardean Landhuis, and Costume Design is by Jerry Sturdefant.  Joes-Luis Ramos is the production’s Stage Manager.

MARGATE, FL:  Flashdance – The Musical, based upon the classic 1983 film will open at Stage Door Theatre on December 29th and run through February 11th.

Flashdance has been described as ‘an unmistakably unique musical about holding on to your dreams and love against all odds.”   Alex Owens, a welder by day and a ‘flashdancer’ by night has dreams of attending the prestigious Shipley Dance Academy.  The show’s narrative follows Alex and her fellow welders and exotic dancer friends as they struggle to leave behind the reality of their everyday lives.

Flashdance – The Musical includes all the iconic numbers from the film – “Maniac”, “Gloria”, “I Love Rock & Roll”, and “Flashdance… What a Feeling”, as well as 14 new songs written expressly for the stage production.

The production will be directed by the multi-faceted Paul O’Donnell.  O’Donnell, who often serves as Stage Door’s Technical Director, recently received glowing reviews and standing ovations when he starred in Stage Door’s production of Nine in April of 2017.

MARGATE, FL:  Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller – not necessarily household names in today’s pop music or theatrical worlds.   But for decades – especially from the mid 1950’s to the mid 1960’s – Leiber and Stoller were one of America’s most successful songwriting teams.  Stage Door Theatre will honor this iconic duo when they present Smokey Joe’s Café – The Songs of Leiber and Stoller, a compendium of some of their greatest hits, in the popular Margate venue’s intimate Theatre 2 from December 15th through January 14th.

Lieber and Stoller wrote together for over 60 years, creating enduring classics in a variety of genres including R & B, Pop, Jazz, Cabaret, and most notably, Rock & Roll. Among those who recorded their songs were Ben E. King (‘Stand By Me’, ‘I (Who Have Nothing)’, ‘Spanish Harlem’), The Drifters (‘There Goes My Baby’, Dance With Me’, ‘On Broadway’), and the Coasters (‘Searchin’, ‘Young Blood’, Yakety Yak’, ‘Charlie Brown’).  Elvis Presley recorded over 20 Lieber and Stoller songs, including some of his greatest hits: ‘Hound Dog’, ‘Jailhouse Rock’, ‘Loving You’, ‘Santa Clause is Back in Town’, ‘She’s Not You’, and ‘Treat Me Nice’ were all their compositions.

Smokey Joe’s Café features 39 Leiber and Stoller songs – some of their greatest, instantly recognizable hits, along with a few that won’t be quite as familiar, but are nonetheless fine examples of the duos’ extraordinary talent and versatility.

PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL:   Top South Florida Broadway and cabaret performers Avery Sommers, John Lariviere, Melissa Boher Jacobson, and Michelle Petrucci will be joined by five talented stars of the future from the Dreyfoos School of the Arts to ring in – and sing in – 2018 at the PGA Arts Center in Palm Beach Gardens.  There will be two performances on December 31st – the first at 7 pm, and the second at 9:30 pm.

The show’s concept – mixing seasoned professional performers with young up-and-coming talent, was conceived and developed by local producer and playwright Alan Jacobson.

“I chose the ‘pros’ based on talent and their ability to relate to an audience in a concert/cabaret environment, so there will be a great rapport with the audience,” Jacobson explains.  “And I chose to include Dreyfoos students because the general public doesn’t typically have the opportunity to see the level of talent that young people have, and these students, all pursuing musical theatre, are the stars of tomorrow.”

The evening will be unique in that some of the show’s musical selections were decided upon by the performers themselves:

“I asked everyone to provide me with a list of songs they’re solid and comfortable with,” Jacobson explains. “And I’m putting the show together based on their lists, as well as the songs I feel will resonate best with our audience, and show each performer off at his or her best.  I’ve also come up with a few numbers they may not know as well – for duets, trios, and of course, the finale.

“There will be lots of terrific singing and dancing, and we’re providing Michelle Petrucci the opportunity to dance with her students – a first!” he says.  Petrucci, a graduate of the Boston Conservatory, is a dancer/choreographer with extensive theatrical experience. She is currently the Dean of the award-winning Theatre Program at the Dreyfoos School of the Arts.

The Dreyfoos students selected to perform are Darah Abrams, Emily Betts, Eli Jacobson, Jacquez Linder-Long, and Maddy Stillman.

“The show’s focus is Broadway,” Jacobson continues, “With well-known songs as well as a few lesser known but still terrific ones sprinkled in.  It will definitely be a song and dance champagne celebration… packed with great talent, great music, and great fun!”

Avery Sommers appeared on Broadway in Ain’t Misbehavin’, Show Boat, Chicago, and Platinum, and in the national tours of The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas with Ann-Margret, and Chicago with Chita Rivera and Joel Grey. Avery was also seen in Regina Taylor’s Crowns at City Theatre in Pittsburgh, and Hairspray at Actors’ Playhouse.

John Lariviere is a cabaret, concert, and jazz singer regularly headlining throughout South Florida in local theatres and clubs. He specializes in music from Broadway and the American Songbook, crossing over into jazz and swing, as well as classical and operetta.

Melissa Boher Jacobson is a professional performer, director and producer, musical director as well as a busy vocal, audition and public speaking coach.  She is an Artist-in-Residence Vocal Instructor for the Dreyfoos School of the Arts Theatre Department, and the former Director of Education for the Plaza Theatre Performing Arts Conservatory.  She has appeared throughout the country and Off Broadway in opera, musical theatre and in concert.

BOCA RATON, FL:  If theatre audiences are looking for travel and adventure this holiday season, they need venture no farther than to Sol Theatre in Boca Raton, where Sol Children Theatre will present a brand new musical adaptation of Jules Verne’s classic tale, Around the World in 80 Days.  From London to Bombay and Yokohama to San Francisco; through typhoons, out-of- control trains, and into the deepest reaches of the imagination, this family friendly adventure will delight audiences of all ages.  The production will run from December 8th through December 23rd in the popular ‘black box’ theatre.

Phileas Fogg has bet he can race around the world – from London and back to London – in a mere 80 days, but the pressure’s on and time is running out. At his side, a band of quirky adventurers. At their heels, a relentless Scotland Yard detective. At stake, surviving utterly fantastic adventures across India, China, Japan and America – beating the clock – and winning the bet.

Around the World in 80 Days’ combination of adult and child actors include Murphy Hayes as Phileas Fogg, Christian Matthiesen (L’Ambiance – Virtual School) as Passepartout, Faith Alfieri (Spanish River Christian School) as Inspector Fix, and Renèe Elizabeth Turner as Aouda.

Thus, these unfortunate circumstances force her into the confines of never knowing what it truly means to freely fall in love. The show’s Scenic Designer is Kate McVay; Costume Designers are MJ Baum and Briana Earhart; Lighting Design and set construction is by Ardean Landhuis.  The production’s Stage Manager is Sean Smyth.

Boca Raton’s Sol Children Theatre is a not-for-profit theatre organization founded by veteran director and actor Rosalie Grant sixteen years ago.  The company’s mission is to provide children with a safe, secure, and highly professional theatre experience.  Those children in then in turn provide quality theatre experiences for audiences.
