BOCA RATON, FLORIDA: Peter Galman, founder and president of Shakespeare Troupe, Inc. (STI), announced performances of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, beginning Friday, March 15, 2024, as the Shakespeare Troupe of South Florida’s inaugural production at the intimate Sol Theatre, 3333 North Federal Highway in Boca Raton.

The production is partially funded by several state, county, and town grants to perform Shakespeare in schools and to bring theatre to the underserved, all the while meeting the Troupe’s mission to train student interns to participate alongside professional actors, designers, and directors. 

The STI production of Hamlet will tour schools and other institutions in the region. “When I heard that Shakes Troupe could bring a free performance of Hamlet to my high schoolers, I jumped at the chance,” says André Gainey, Staff Administrator at Somerset Preparatory Academy Charter School at North Lauderdale, who has booked the Troupe for April 2nd.

“Shakes Troupe will do two school shows on April 2nd, to accommodate more than 300 students and maintain an intimacy,” said Galman, “And we’ll supply the teachers with a study guide to engage their students in preparation for the play, in accordance with the standards prescribed in the State of Florida’s CPalms.org website.”

And on March 20th, the Troupe will perform its adaptation of Hamlet for the residents and day visitors at the Jewish Association of Residential Care in Boca Raton (JARC). Ed Barbanell, a professional actor with a disability will play the role of Bernardo – the soldier who first sees Hamlet’s ghost – in front of one hundred or more persons with special needs who will attend the performance at JARC. Mr. Barbanell has taken a previous workshop with Shakespeare Troupe and continues his association with the only company in South Florida performing Shakespeare all the year long. 

In William Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, a young prince acts mad to avoid assassination in a corrupted court while contemplating revenge for his father’s murder. Occurring in a time for elections, morality has acquiesced to the threat of violence, promising only a grave solution.

In less than 2 hours Shakespeare Troupe of South Florida examines the existential threat that the power of the state holds against the power of the imagination in the individual. Hamlet is stripped down to its essentials in the intimate jewel box of the Sol Theatre: a ghost appears with a dreaded message, there’s been a coup, power is being consolidated as witnesses are silenced, spies are everywhere, and traps are being set. “A mind-bending web of intrigue entices and ensnares all who marvel at this polished gem of dramatic literature,” Galman enthuses. 

Hamlet will play for four weekends at Sol Theatre, from March 15 through April 7, for a total of 12 public performances. Tickets for Hamlet are on sale now and can be purchased online at https://www.shakestroupe.org/eventlistings. Tickets range in price from $10 to $25.

BOCA RATON, FL: Comic Cure has been entertaining audiences with outstanding stand-up comedy since its founding in 2015.   And now the popular comedic company has found a new home at Sol Theatre in the heart of Boca Raton.

Comic Cure has hosted some of the biggest names in the industry; their performances are a premier destination for comedy lovers in South Florida.  (They also operate out of venues in New Jersey, Philadelphia, and Southwest Florida.) 

“There’s nothing better than a comedy show in an intimate setting where the laughter is contagious and space between you and the performer is like sitting across from each other at the dinner table. This is what it’s like at Sol Theatre,” say Comic Cure’s Founder and Managing Director, Ben Leis.  

“Our upcoming season of headliners are handpicked all-stars of stand-up comedy. She is a regular guest on major syndicated media shows such as The Bob & Tom Show, John Boy & Billy, and XM/Sirius Blue Collar Radio. Television appearances include spots on ABC, NBC, CBS and even a part on the Hit Show Last Comic Standing.

Ariel Alias (from Jimmy Kimmel Live)

Ariel is a comedian living in New York City. Growing up, this Kentucky Jew made everyone laugh at her bat mitzvah, and the rest is history. Today her comedy is a fun mesh of unique, personal stories mixed with witty and wry observations. Described as “a sly young comic from Kentucky” by the New York Times, Ariel has also been featured in Rolling Stone, the Washington Post, and on Good Morning America. As a traveling stand-up comedian, she has performed on the set of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and was named a “New Face” at the 2021 Just For Laughs Comedy Festival. After catching Jimmy Kimmel’s attention with a viral stand-up clip that displayed her cool, calm, and hilarious composure, he invited Ariel to make her late- night television debut on his show! In the same week she also appeared for an interview on the daytime talk show, Sherri.

He can be seen in the new multi-comic standup series on Netflix called Verified Standup which debuted on the platform on November 28, 2023. BOCA RATON, FL:  Shakespeare Lives!, an intensive 10-day workshop created by Shakespeare Troupe of South Florida, will offer students ages 13 – 22 the opportunity to study many facets of classical acting. Classes will take place at Sol Theatre in Boca Raton from July 24th through August 4th.  The program is spearheaded by Shakespeare Troupe founder Peter Galman.    

Professional actors will conduct master classes, teaching the principles of vocal projection, diction, text analysis, verse management, character portrayal, and self-staging techniques. The workshops – open to a maximum of 20 students – will culminate with a staged reading of scenes from Shakespeare showcasing the trainees’ development as classical actors, and will be open to the public. Each student will take away a classic monologue to use in auditions.

Fellow Shakespeare Troupe teaching artists, who specialize in voice, movement, and music will join Galman in conducting the 5-hour sessions.

Tuition for the 10-day Shakespeare Lives! workshop is $250.  Students will be accepted through audition or a self-tape submission.

Shakespeare Troupe of South Florida’s mission is to build engagement and appreciation of the text of William Shakespeare through immersive and educational theatrical experiences.
Founded by Peter Galman in 2016 to commemorate the Bard’s 400th birthday, the Troupe has participated in numerous events, including the weeklong intensive World of Shakespeare Program in March 2017 at the Cushman School in Miami. In 2018-2019 the Troupe toured dozens of schools, venues, and cultural centers, reaching 10,000 audience members, many of whom were new to the works of William Shakespeare.

Peter Galman was born in Chicago, trained under a scholarship at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, and completed graduate studies under legendary teacher Stella Adler. After beginning his professional career with Joseph Papp’s New York Shakespeare Festival, he appeared regularly as the troubled Tom Hughes on the daytime serial “As the World Turns” for five years while moonlighting on Broadway and off-Broadway in New York. After a hiatus from his art to raise a family on Long Island, he returned to his passion and joined the ensemble of the Actors Shakespeare Company of Jersey City, New Jersey, where he played many roles, including Prospero, Claudius, Lear, Bottom, and Shylock. It was there he developed his exploration of First Folio text and gained teaching and artist experience in the ASC school programs. His earliest Shakespeare roles were in the early summer seasons of the Colorado Shakespeare Festival, where he developed vocal projection skills and rapier and dagger stage fighting techniques.

Meek floral assistant Seymour Krelborn stumbles across a new breed of plant he names “Audrey II” – after his coworker crush. This R&B-singing carnivore promises unending fame and fortune to the down and out Krelborn as long as he keeps feeding it…blood. Over time, though, Seymour discovers Audrey II’s out of this world origins and intent towards global domination!

BOCA RATON, FL:  If you’re looking for magical, imaginative, family-friendly theatre this summer, look no farther than Boca Raton! Sol Children Theatre will present Peter and the Starcatcher and Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical in repertory style from July 12th through August 4th.  Both productions will star the talented young actors who are participating in the company’s Summer Repertory Theatre program.

“It started out as an exciting notion, doing Summer Repertory, and then it developed into feasible programming,” Sol Producer Sara Elizabeth Grant explains. “Two shows sharing a black box theatre isn’t easy, but it certainly presents an incredible opportunity for theatre magic to take place. And what better shows than to choose ones that revolve around magic! We’re so fortunate to have the directing and production team that we have on board, not to mention our exceptional two casts of young theatre artists. Watching these shows evolve is truly magical.”

The Tony Award-winning Peter and the Starcatcher upends the century-old story of how a miserable orphan comes to be The Boy Who Would Not Grow Up (a.k.a. Peter Pan).  From marauding pirates and jungle tyrants to unwilling comrades and unlikely heroes, Peter and the Starcatcher playfully explores the depths of greed and despair, and the bonds of duty, friendship, and love.

Starcatcher’s cast includes Andrew Salmore, Austin Stein, Ava Cavasos, Calvin Zanetti, Hartlynn Ackerman, Kayla Asuoty, Megan Mascaro, Samantha Mascaro, and Tyler Wartmann. The production will be directed by Seth Trucks.

“I am beyond thrilled to be returning to Sol Children as a director for the third time,” Trucks says.  “Given that we are presenting Peter and the Starcatcher I am especially excited to be working with such a talented and experienced cast of young actors. The open-ended nature of the stage directions in this play have allowed us to use their considerable imaginations to build the images and stage magic. The result is an original and authentic version of this beautiful play.”

Inspired by the genius of Roald Dahl, the multiple award-winning Matilda the Musical is a captivating masterpiece from the Royal Shakespeare Company that revels in the anarchy of childhood, the power of imagination, and the inspiring story of a girl who dreams of a better life.

BOCA RATON, FL:  Sol Children Theatre will present The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee at Sol Theatre in Boca Raton from October 19th through November 4th.

Nominated for six Tony Awards, and winning 2, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee features an eclectic group of sixth graders who arrive at a fictional spelling bee set in the geographically ambiguous Putnam Valley Middle School to vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter – one speller leaves! At least the losers get a juice box! 

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee will be directed by Ryan McAtee.  McAtee is a Seattle based director, choreographer, actor and solo performance artist.  He is also Theatre/Movement Educator and teaches youths spanning pre-K to 12th Grade:

“The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is one heck of a musical comedy, and truly one of my favorite shows” McAtee says. “This story revolves around a handful of 10-to-14-year-olds as they traverse the societal and familial pressures of what it means to be a competitive speller. While originally the roles are played by adults, implementing a cast of teens and preteens illuminates an honest and motivated outlook to the quirks and realities of these characters. BOCA RATON, FL:  Charles Schulz’s beloved comic strip will come to life in Boca Raton when Sol Children Theatre presents You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.  The musical, which recently celebrated its 50th anniversary, will run from August 3 – 19 at Sol Theatre in Boca Raton. 

The whole gang will be there:  bossy Lucy, hopelessly in love with piano prodigy Schroeder; perfectionist Sally, harassing blanket-toting Linus; Snoopy, in (or on) his doghouse, and of course ‘Blockhead’ himself, Charlie Brown.  Brief vignettes span the months from Valentine’s Day to Beethoven Day, from wild optimism to utter despair.  But through it all, the sweet, joyful innocence of the Peanuts gang stays true.

Courtney Poston will direct the production: “It is a pleasure to have the opportunity to direct You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown, and to help keep Peanuts alive for this younger generation,” she says. “I grew up on the comics and TV show, as did my parents (and grandparents), and this musical has a special place in my heart as I played “Sally” in a production in Boca years ago. The musical is written to be performed by adults, but I think it is even more charming to have children portray these iconic characters. They deliver the lines with such honesty, and don’t even have to think about “the funny”, it just comes out naturally.

“Charlie Brown and the gang deal with such relatable topics to young people (and adults, for that matter) such as: fitting in, bullying, struggling in school, breaking bad habits, valuing your friends, etc.” she continues.  “In our table read, we discussed some of these situations, and to quote the kids: “Sometimes people are hard on you, sometimes you’re hard on yourself, but it’s important to find happiness in the little things and to remember your friends and family love you.” 

Poston’s young cast consists of Ava Callahan as Charlie Brown (Boca Raton Community Middle School), Nisa Guvenilir as Lucy (Omni Middle School), Piper Fine as Snoopy (Citrus Cove Elementary School), Tillie Pepos-Lebrun as Schroeder (Pine Crest School),  Maureen Tracy as Linus (Somerset Academy), and Eden Wexler as Sally (Del Prado Elementary School).

Sara Elizabeth Grant who is acting as both the show’s producer and choreographer has seen the show’s young cast come together and form a special bond: “An overall theme throughout You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown is that though times may be difficult, at least you’re surrounded by those who have your back,” she says.  “This is a remarkably fitting production for our cast, where on the first day of rehearsal not a one of them knew each other and were so nervous, to now where they have built a sweet energetic family unit both on and off stage.  It’s encouraging to watch this young group of actors tackling such difficult material with ease and confidence.  They have truly embraced what it is to be the “Peanuts” and are bringing this musical to life.”

BOCA RATON, FL:  If theatre audiences are looking for travel and adventure this holiday season, they need venture no farther than to Sol Theatre in Boca Raton, where Sol Children Theatre will present a brand new musical adaptation of Jules Verne’s classic tale, Around the World in 80 Days.  From London to Bombay and Yokohama to San Francisco; through typhoons, out-of- control trains, and into the deepest reaches of the imagination, this family friendly adventure will delight audiences of all ages.  The production will run from December 8th through December 23rd in the popular ‘black box’ theatre.

Phileas Fogg has bet he can race around the world – from London and back to London – in a mere 80 days, but the pressure’s on and time is running out. At his side, a band of quirky adventurers. At their heels, a relentless Scotland Yard detective. At stake, surviving utterly fantastic adventures across India, China, Japan and America – beating the clock – and winning the bet.

The production will be directed by Rosalie Grant, Sol’s dynamic founder and artistic director:

Around the World in 80 Days’ combination of adult and child actors include Murphy Hayes as Phileas Fogg, Christian Matthiesen (L’Ambiance – Virtual School) as Passepartout, Faith Alfieri (Spanish River Christian School) as Inspector Fix, and Renèe Elizabeth Turner as Aouda.

The role of Princess Aouda is one that continually proves to be far more than a traditional female romantic lead. She is a woman who is loyal, caring, well educated, and strong; even while living in a culture where the traditions of human sacrifice and arranged marriages are the social norm. Thus, these unfortunate circumstances force her into the confines of never knowing what it truly means to freely fall in love. It is an absolute joy to present the musical version of this timeless classic with this incredible cast.”

BOCA RATON, FL: Evening Star Productions will kick off their newest project, Sol After Dark, with a one-act adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth.  The production, which will run for just three days – from October 26th to 28th – is the first of what Evening Star’s Artistic Director Rosalie Grant says will be “something a little off the beaten theatre path for those hungry for a different bite of theatre.”

“Our lineup of productions will feature an all-inclusive evening in one ticket price,” she explained recently.  “A “bite” of theatre, refreshments, and talk backs after the shows which will include (along with the upcoming Shakespearean selection), absurdism, science fiction, and more.”

Shakespeare’s shortest tragedy, thought to have first been performed in 1606, and often called “The Scottish Play”, Macbeth explores the damaging physical and psychological effects of political ambition on those who seek power for its own sake. Of all the plays Shakespeare wrote during the reign of James I, who was patron of Shakespeare’s acting company, Macbeth most clearly reflects the playwright’s relationship with his sovereign.

Seth Trucks and Sara Elizabeth Grant are collaborating to create the one-act adaptation consisting of a cast of four.  Audience members will be immersed in all that is terrifying about power and the repercussions that follow.

“As Evening Star continues to explore Shakespeare, we thought Macbeth would be the perfect fit for the intimacy that Sol Theatre provides.” Seth Trucks says.  “Having the actors right in the audience’s faces will allow them to track every devious thought in the characters’ eyes.  Already Shakespeare’s shortest tragedy, we have cut it down even more so they the audience never gets a break from the tension.”

Sara Elizabeth Grant will direct the production.  The cast of four includes Trucks as Macbeth, and Amada Ortega, Courtney Poston, and Kimberly Bernzky as Witches One, Two, and Three.  The evening will be hosted by Natalie Herman.

“It’s no secret we live in a world controlled by status, which leaves us the option to either dominate or submit,” says director Grant.  “What’s not so clear is what choices to make when one obtains power, and what hidden forces are behind it.  The story of Macbeth embodies this very struggle, containing degrees of political and magical.  Our adaptation reveals that manipulation can be overlooked by the need for power.

“As we approach Samhain, it is only appropriate to turn our attention to the roles the 3 Witches play in Macbeth… that magic has the ability to alter someone’s fate,” she continues.  “The Witches create a world of hallucination by taking on each pivotal character that Macbeth encounters.  This leaves him the choice to either harness his power for good or allow it to let him fall.”

BOCA RATON, FL:  Who is right, and who is wrong?  David Mamet’s play, Oleanna, asks this question, and leaves its audiences searching for, and often even arguing about the answer.  Evening Star Productions will present Oleanna, at Sol Theatre in Boca Raton, from September 22 – October 8. (There will be a preview performance on September 21.)

A powerful and thought provoking two-character drama, Oleanna is a play about academic politics, student/teacher relationships, and sexual harassment.  The play explores the power struggle between John, a university professor, and Carol, one of his female students, who accuses him of sexual exploitation and, by doing so, spoils his chances of being accorded tenure. The play’s title, taken from a folk song, refers to a 19th-century escapist vision of Utopia*.

Rosalie Grant, Evening Star’s founder and artistic director will helm the production: “Oleanna premiered in 1992, shortly after the infamous United States Supreme Court confirmation hearings of Clarence Thomas brought the term “sexual harassment” into the national spotlight,” Grant explains. “The play deals with a male professor and a female student who are arguing over her grade in his class.  By the play’s end, both of their lives have changed forever – and not for the better.  

“Every time I have seen Oleanna, the audience members are arguing about it in the lobby after the show,” she continues.  “It really pushes some buttons.  It’s hard to believe that in 2017 a story about sexual harassment is once again relevant.  I look forward to eavesdropping on audience conversations after the show.”

Sara Grant and Todd Bruno will portray the play’s two characters, Carol and John.

Director Grant has enlisted Ardean Landhuis to design and construct the Oleanna set and lighting.  Scenic art is by Kate McVay, with an assist by intern Kayla Asuoty, and costume design is by Mj Baum.  The production’s stage manager is Sean Smyth.

* Oleanna (Oleana) is a Norwegian folk song that was translated into English and popularized by Pete Seeger. The song is a critique of Ole Bornemann Bull’s vision of a perfect society in America. (Bull was a Norwegian virtuoso violinist and composer). Oleanna was the name of one of Ole Bull’s settlements in the New Norway colony of Pennsylvania. His society failed, and all the immigrants moved away since the dense forest made it hard to settle there. The lyrics concern the singer’s desire to leave Norway and escape to Oleanna, a land where “wheat and corn just plant themselves, then grow a good four feet a day while on your bed you rest yourself.”   ~ Wikipedia
