Carbonell Award Winner
Margot Moreland
to Star
in the classic musical
Sweet Charity
at the Boca Raton Theatre Guild
March 2nd – March 18th

Charity Hope Valentine, Dance Hall Hostess, unlucky romantic, and eternal optimist, continuously searches for true love in Sweet Charity, the Tony Award-winning musical which will be presented by the Boca Raton Theatre Guild at the Willow Theatre in Sugar Sand Park  from March 2nd -18th.

Neil Simon’s sparklingly clever script, loosely adapted from Fellini’s “Nights in Cabiria”, follows Charity (and some of her very unusual friends) through a series of misadventures, and documents her constant and unfortunate tendency to offer her heart to the wrong man.  Simon updated the story from Rome in the 1950s to New York City in the 1960s while the hippie culture was just emerging and taxi dancers were quickly becoming relics. “This is Neil Simon doing what he did best: a bittersweet comedy with plenty of memorable zingers and clever situations,” says the musical’s director Keith Garsson.

Sweet Charity is one of the best musicals ever written”, says Garsson, who helmed last year’s BRTG hit production of Cabaret.  “All the elements clicked back in 1966: Gwen Verdon, one of theater’s greatest dancers, Bob Fosse, choreographer and director, and most importantly a very jazzy score by the legendary Cy Coleman.” The score, with its witty lyrics by Dorothy Fields, features such classics as Big Spender, If They Could See Me Now, and Rhythm of Life. “These are songs we sang in high school and summer camp.”

“It is surprising to me that Sweet Charity doesn’t receive more recognition, after all it’s a dream role for a lot of women,” Garsson says. “In this case it’s a dream cast with one of South Florida’s finest musical comediennes, Margot Moreland, as Charity. Margot has always wanted to play this role. What can I say? The timing was perfect and early rehearsals proved she owned this part immediately.”

Margot Moreland (Charity Valentine) is the recipient of 3 Carbonell Awards, and 4 Curtain Up Awards.  Her distinguished career includes performances on stage, as well as in film, and television.  She has toured nationally and regionally, and is a member of AEA, SAG, and AFTRA.

Jeffrey Bruce (Oscar Lindquist) has participated in 9 National tours, including How To Succeed… (Finch), Camelot (Mordred), Boys in the Band (Harold) and Flower Drum Song  He served as the permanent guest host on the nation’s #1 local television talk show, Kelly & Co., in Detroit for 21 years. He played The Witch in Hansel & Gretel, at the Michigan Opera Theatre. Jeffrey is a member of The Zoetic Stage Theatre Company in Miami.

Sweet Charity  will run from March 2nd through March 18th.  Performances are: Wednesday – Saturday at 8:00 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays at 2:00 p.m. The Willow Theatre in Sugar Sand Park is located at 300 South Military Trail in Boca Raton, just south of Palmetto Park Road. Tickets for Sweet Charity are $20 and are on sale now. Tickets can be purchased at the Willow Theatre Box office: 561-347-3948.

Music at its most Exciting & Eclectic – Jace Vek & Jimi Cokinos at Arts Garage – January 21st!

Virtuoso Pianist Jace Vek & Renowned Guitarist Jimi Cokinos
to perform in concert
at|
Arts Garage
January 21st

January’s Jace Vek Experience at Delray’s Arts Garage will feature a fusion:  Two artists from completely different backgrounds will combine their talents to explore, create, and perform in a unique concert – inviting their audience to join them in their discovery of bold new sounds.

Composer and concert pianist Jace Vek has built a critically acclaimed career on combining different genres to create unique compositions; electric guitarist Jimi Cokinos has been called original and innovative:

“This is a live music event I have created exclusively for Arts Garage. On January 21st you will see and hear two completely different worlds of music collide on that stage,” says Vek.
Vekʼs original music is a piano driven world of sound, backed by a digital symphony orchestra. The original music composed and produced by Jace is a bold mixture of multiple styles – most notably:  neo-classical, new-age, electronic, symphonic rock, trance, and dubstep.

Jimi Cokinos is an electric guitarist with an eclectic talent. His music ranges through many different styles including, sweeping guitar leads, punk, rock, jazz, heavy metal, hardcore, thrash, and more. Jimi has had an extensive career in production and has worked in numerous capacities with many great artists including Fuel, Destinyʼs Child, Creed, Janet Jackson, James Taylor, Kylie Monogue and many others. Jimi has also worked with various artists on television shows such as The Ellen Degeneres Show, American Idol, Good Morning America, and Conan O’Brien.

In addition to his new music, Jace Vek will perform a set of his own arrangements of the music of Journey, Metallica, Smashing Pumpkins, Pink Floyd and others.

“I have taken these well known pieces from these great bands, and turned them inside out for the piano. Itʼs fun to explore these melodies,” says Vek. “There are such beautiful melodies going on in these pieces, and the naked piano exposes them.”

Arts Garage is a multi-disciplinary cultural hub for musicians, performers, film presenters and visual artists. The mission of the Arts Garage is to collaborate with emerging artists and cultural innovators to facilitate an exchange of art and ideas and to present cutting-edge, interdisciplinary performances and exhibitions.

Young, Talented, and Enthusiastic Cast in Entr’Acte Theatrix’ Godspell – January 12 – 22

Presents
GODSPELL
January 12 – 22

The young performers in Entr’Acte Theatrix’ upcoming production of  Godspell are hard at work preparing for their January 12th opening night at the Borland Center, but no one is complaining!  In fact, the actors and the production crew are all having a blast. “This show has made me remember how important it is to have fun not just in work, but in life,” enthuses Juan Gonzalez Machain, who plays Jesus in the show.

Director Gayle Coursol was attracted to the production for many reasons, but particularly because of Entr’Acte Theatrix’ mission to offer emerging talent a professional theatre experience:  “I was excited about working with Vicki Halmos, for everything I have seen her produce has been absolutely fantastic,” says Coursol. “Not only does she put on quality shows, but I really like the fact that she gives aspiring actors a place to learn all the many things that must be learned in this business. And regardless of whether an actor aspires to something greater or not, this company gives young people an opportunity to meet other young people coming from all walks of life; to have experiences which will strengthen communication and focusing skills; learn values necessary to form a strong community; and become productive partners of our society.”

The rest of the creative team is equally enthusiastic:

“It’s a joy to work with this young and talented cast,” says Roger Bankenship, Godspell’s musical director.  “They take direction with ease and the return is even greater than asked.” And Jeanne McKinnon, the show’s choreographer, agrees: “The cast of Godspell brings so much talent to the table that choreographing the show was more fun than work!”

One of the most successful Off-Broadway and Broadway musicals of all time (a current revival is playing to packed houses on Broadway), Godspell has been embraced by audiences everywhere since its 1970 debut. The story is based on the Gospel of Matthew, with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz (of Wicked and Pippin fame).

Godspell’s talented cast and creative team also includes Andy Christler as Judas, dance captain Lissen Ellington, Catie Bonk, Adele Zin, Jessica Kris, Samantha Etienne, Aumalia Otto, and Domenic Servidio.

The cast’s enthusiasm for Godspell is evident during rehearsals, and will no doubt be transmitted to the show’s audiences. As Juan Gonzalez Machain so rightly says:  “Godspell has reminded me that a good story can be told while having a CRAZY TIME!”

Godspell will run from January 12 through January 15 at the Borland Center, and January 19– 22 at in the former Unity Church on the Flagler Campus of the Palm Beach Day Academy.

Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased by calling 800-965-9324.  For Group Sales and Information call:  561-366-9033.

Entr’Acte Theatrix presents Godspell January 12-22

Entr’Acte Theatrix has chosen Godspell as its next production. One of the most successful Off-Broadway and Broadway musicals of all time (a current revival is playing to packed houses on Broadway), Godspell is the perfect vehicle to highlight the talents of the company’s young performers.

“The goal of Entr’Acte Theatrix is to give emerging talents from South Florida the opportunity to get critical professional theater credits as they transition into the world of professional theater,” explains Vicki Halmos, Entr’Acte Theatrix’ Executive Producer. “And Godspell offers all our cast members the chance to use many aspects of their training, learn what it’s like to work in a true ensemble situation, and know what’s involved in participating in, and even producing a professional production.”

The joyful musical features a sparkling score by Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Pippin), and contains songs that have become an integral part of the American Broadway Songbook including “Day by Day”, “Learn Your Lessons Well”, and “By My Side”. The play draws on various theatrical disciplines such as clowning, pantomime, charades, acrobatics, and vaudeville.

Originally conceived by John-Michael Tebelak as his masters thesis, and performed by students at Carnegie Mellon University, Godspell’s playful enactment of parables as told in Matthew and other books of the New Testament has engaged audiences since its debut in 1971. The project was brought to the attention of Broadway producers Edgar Lansbury (brother of Angela!) and Joseph Beruh by Carnegie alumnus Charles Haid (associate producer), who wanted to open it Off-Broadway. They hired Stephen Schwartz, another alumnus of Carnegie Mellon’s theater department, to write score. Schwartz’s songs incorporate a variety of musical styles, from pop to folk rock, and gospel.

Godspell’s talented cast and creative team includes:
Juan Gonzalez Machain, (Jesus), was born in Mexico City, Mexico and entered the University of Miami as a Vocal Performance major. He was first seen as Betto in Gianni Schicchi. Since then, Juan has performed in The Music Man, The Winter’s Tale, Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead, The Young Einstein, Jekyll & Hyde, The Fantasticks, columbinus, and the rolling world premier of Edith Can Shoot Things and Hit Them.

Andy Christler (Judas) has appeared in Palm Beach County productions of Rent, Oklahoma, and Big River. In Detroit, MI he played Seymour Krelbourn in Little Shop of Horrors, Prince Dauntless in Once Upon a Mattress, and Harry in Brigadoon. He won best supporting actor from the Detroit Area Theater Association for his role as Bud Frump in How to succeed in Business Without Really Trying. Andy is a speech-language pathologist with MedSpeech Inc, specializing in voice, airway and swallowing disorders.

Dance Captain Lissen Ellington is no stranger to the South Florida theatre scene – she has performed in productions at Actors’ Playhouse, Broward Stage Door, New Vista Theatre, Florida Repertory Theatre, Rising Action Theatre, Slow Burn Theatre, Duncan Theatre, and in Entr’Acte Theatrix’ recent production of Cabaret. She is also a featured performer with Divas in Art at Delray’s Arts Garage.

Godspell’s multi-talented Director Gayle Coursol is a playwright, director, musical director, and stage manager. Her projects over the years have included co-writing and directing The Silk Road for the Norton Museum; vocal coach for The Magic Continues with Ben Vereen; musical director of A Night of Auction with Jay Leno; and Moroccan Nights with Goldie Hawn. Her playwrighting credits include A Night of Memories at the Lyric, and 2013’s From God to Gershwin. Her recent projects include stage-managing for The Palm Beach Centennial Follies, and founding and directing The Island Players of Palm Beach.

Musical Director Roger Blankenship teaches private piano, theory, and vocal coaching, and serves as Organist and Choir Master at St. Mary’s Anglican Church in Delray Beach. He has been involved in the FAU music and theatre departments where he has assisted in numerous shows, Summer Rep, and has created, directed and played two musical revues.

Choreographer Jeanne McKinnon has an extensive theatrical background both on stage and behind the scenes. Her choreography credits included Bye Bye Birdie, Meet Me in St. Louis, and Big River at the Lake Worth Playhouse. Recent on stage roles include Fraulein Schneider in Cabaret, and Miss Jones in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. She has worked with many children’s theatre programs throughout Palm Beach County.

Godspell will run from January 12 through January 15 at the Borland Center, and January 18 – 22 at in the former Unity Church on the Flagler Campus of the Palm Beach Day Academy.

A Strong Cast Set for Parade Productions’ ‘Brooklyn Boy’ – January 26-February 12

Michael Gioia, Ryan Didato and Jacqueline Laggy
to join
Avi Hoffman
at
The Studio at Mizner Park
January 26th –February 12th

Parade Productions, Boca Raton’s newest theatre company, has completed casting for their upcoming production of Brooklyn Boy.  Artistic Director Kim St. Leon and Producing Director Candace Caplin are extremely pleased with their cast: “It took us a while,” says Caplin, “we refused to ‘settle’ – and we’re delighted with each and every one of our choices.”

Brooklyn Boy has been called one of Donald Margulies’ funniest and most moving plays. With sparkling dialogue, humor, and just the right amount of poignancy, the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright examines the consequences of success and reminds us that nobody’s journey through life can be made without some bad decisions, wrong directions, or regrets.

Kim St. Leon, who will direct the production, brings over 35 years of stage, television, and film experience to the company.   Among her many stage credits are acclaimed productions of Faith Healer at Inside/Out Theater, Nine Parts of Desire and The Memory of Water at the Mosaic Theater, many seasons of City Theatre’s “Summer Shorts”, the world premiere of Men Don’t Go to Heaven for the Alchemy Theater Company, Zombie Prom and Five Women Wearing the Same Dress  at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, and the award winning regional production of Frankie and Johnny at the Claire De Lune.

Brooklyn Boy spoke to me on so many levels,” says St. Leon. “It’s about family forgiveness, acceptance, the crazy artist life… But it’s especially about parents and children – how we have written on each other with words and deeds, and how patterns and ways families communicate are passed on from generation to generation.”

Avi Hoffman will star as author Eric Weiss, who discovers his new-found success and celebrity comes with some unexpected complications.  Hoffman is one of South Florida’s busiest and most popular actors. He is celebrated for his award-winning one man shows Too Jewish? and Too Jewish, Too!, broadcast nationally on PBS. His newest show Still Jewish After All These Years is scheduled to open in New York in May 2012. The multi-talented Hoffman is the founder of the National Center for Jewish Cultural Arts and the New Vista Theatre. He recently directed As Bees in Honey Drown at Rising Action Theatre and has just completed an extremely successful turn as Wilber Turnblad in the Actor’s Playhouse production of Hairspray.

Michael Gioia (Ira Zimmer) is well known to South Florida audiences.  He is the owner and Executive Director of The Acting School of South Florida, holds an M.F.A. from the University of Florida, and is a member of Actors’ Equity Association and the Screen Actors’ Guild.  He has worked as an actor or director in over 75 productions in theatre and film.

Ryan Didato (Tyler Shaw) holds a BFA in acting from New World School of the Arts.  His recent appearance as Mark Rothko’s assistant Ken in Red at Gablestage earned him rave reviews from audiences and critics alike. Some of his other South Florida credits include The Irish Curse at Mosaic Theatre (Silver Palm, Best Ensemble), Speech and Debate at Gablestage (Carbonell nominated, Best Ensemble), and Camp Kappawanna for City Theatre.

Rounding out the impressive Brooklyn Boy cast are Jacqueline Laggy, Sy Fish, Blaze Powers, and Candace Caplin.

Parade Productions is a not-for profit theatre company whose mission is “To produce high quality theatre experiences that entertain, enlighten, inform, uplift, and inspire audiences, sending them home with new thoughts, insights, questions, and ideas.”

Brooklyn Boy will open January 26th, 2012, and will run through February 12th, with performances Thursday through Saturday evenings at 7:30 p.m., and Sundays at 2 p.m. Ticket prices are $30 ($25 for groups of 20 or more).
