POMPANO BEACH, FL: The Secret Comedy of Women, an immersive theatrical experience that rejoices in the challenges of being a woman, will open at the Pompano Beach Cultural Center on March 13th and run through April 14th.

From boys to bras and pantyhose to menopause, this two-woman show explores the universal female experience through a rollicking spectacle of comedy, songs, dances, stories, and spontaneous moments of discovery that all women share.

Inspired by authors Barbara Gehring and Linda Klein’s earnest and sweetly absurd writings in their girlhood diaries, The Secret Comedy of Women is a mix of sketch comedy, improvisation, audience participation, witty songs, and clever videos. The show reminds audiences of the very funny and very charming similarities between all women. “It’s really like a girlhood reunion,” says Klein. “Our show is something highly universal, made personal. It is definitely for women of all ages,” says Gehring. “However,” she adds, make no mistake, the men in our audiences love the show just as much!”

The Secret Comedy of Women actively engages its audience with its high spirited, good-natured style of humor. With reviewers calling the show “…truly brilliant.” (Denver Post) and “Laugh out loud comedy!” (Broadway World) it is no wonder that this “two hour celebration of bras, purses, showers, breastfeeding and menopause” (Pittsburgh Tribune) ran continuously for nearly two years at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts, and has played to over a quarter of a million women across North America.

Barbara Gehring and Linda Klein both began writing and performing comedy at an early age.  While young Barbara directed elaborate puppet shows in her secret fort thousands of miles away in Winnipeg, Canada, little Linda was producing extravagant backyard circuses in a tiny Colorado mountain town.  Neither could have foreseen how well these skills would blend together decades later when they wrote The Secret Comedy of Women.  Had they known each other all those years ago, The Secret Comedy of Women is exactly the type of show they would have created together and now as adults, it is exactly the kind of show in which they’ve always wanted to perform. Gehring and Klein have successful careers in the entertainment industry beyond comedy, and have rich expertise in the areas of training, writing, creative thinking, logistics, administration, marketing, and public relations.

The Secret Comedy of Women will run from March 13 through April 14 at the Pompano Beach Cultural Center.  Tickets range from $45 to $65; group rates are also available.  Tickets can be purchased online at https://playhouseinfo.com/pompanobeachculturalcenter or by phone at 855-448-7469. POMPANO BEACH, DELRAY BEACH, CORAL SPRINGS, LARGO, & AVENTURA, FL:
Carole Montgomery’s Funny Women of a Certain Age is a show straight from the unfettered mouths and uninhibited minds of the funniest, most daring, most experienced people in comedy: women who have seen it all! Arts Center Management will bring this brilliant and vibrant group of comedians to various South Florida venues in February and March.

Award-winning veteran stand-up comic Carole Montgomery has had a long and varied career as a comedian, writer, director, and producer, with an extensive background in television, and as a comedy club headliner throughout the United States (including two extremely successful Las Vegas productions). Frustrated by the way women have been portrayed on television once they hit 50, she created Funny Women of a Certain Age to give older women comics a chance to be seen and heard.  Montgomery will be joined on stage in February by comedians by Juila Scotti and Leighann Lord and in March by Vanessa Hollingshead and Tampa Bay comedian Trish Keating.

Funny Women of a Certain Age premiered on Showtime television in 2019; the special was the highest-rated premiere stand-up show for the network that year. It made history as the first TV comedy special to feature female comics over the age of 50. A second, and then a third iteration of the special garnered similar ratings.  The national tour was launched in the spring of 2022, and since then the show has played in numerous venues across the country.

Funny Women of a Certain Age will be performed at various venues throughout South Florida in February and March.  Venues, dates, and ticketing websites are listed below.  Ticket prices vary.

DELRAY BEACH, FL:  Boca Stage’s second production of the season will be the 1960’s French farce Boeing Boeing.  The production will run from January 18th – 27th in the Cabaret Theater of the award-winning theatre company’s new home at the Delray Beach Playhouse.

“After our virtually sold-out run of Wait Until Dark, for our second show we’re investing in straight comedy,” says Boca Stage producer and the show’s director, Keith Garsson. “Boeing Boeing has been re-translated and updated several times since its original incarnation in 1960. However, we chose this particular piece because unlike most farces, the plot does not depend on a simple misunderstanding, where, if explained, the play would be over. Rather, this play’s machinations ride on the ability of an American in Paris trying to keep all three of his internationally diverse flight attendant fiancées from discovering each other…when they all show up at his bachelor pad almost simultaneously.

“However, the authors were not content to rely solely on slamming doors and fast changes to the humor,” he continues. The dialogue is fast, clever and funny. The characters are a broad spectrum of whack jobs and neurotics each with their own voice yet staying just this side of stereotypes. And as always, to disclose more about the plot, or even the characters, would be unthinkable as surprises and twists lurk on every page,” he concludes.

All but two members of Boeing Boeing’s cast (Angie Radosh and Kevin Cruz just off the company’s spring production of Grand Horizons) are fresh faces to Boca Stage; South Florida Theater veteran Noah Levine will play the “put upon” swinging bachelor Bernard who is on the verge of a breakdown juggling his three paramours. These paramours are Boca Stage newcomers Sandi Stock, Zoe Darragh Garnett, and JB Wing.

The Stage Manager for Boeing Boeing is James Danford. Cindi Blank Taylor is the show’s Scenic Designer, David Hart will create the Sound, Alberto Arroyo continues as Costume Designer while Andre Lancaster will serve as the show’s Technical Director. Backstage Managers are Anne Solomons and Edgar Maldonado.

Tickets for Boeing Boeing range in price from $39 to $69 and are available online at delraybeachplayhouse.com or by calling 561-272-1281. Performances are on Friday and Saturday at 2 pm and 8 pm, and on Sunday at 2 pm. DELRAY BEACH, FLORIDA:  Tom Dugan, creator of Tell Him It’s Jackie, and the multiple award-winning play Weisenthal will bring his newest play, Tevye in New York! to the Delray Beach Playhouse. The solo performance, starring Dugan himself, will run from December 21st through January 7th.

This production will be the East Coast premiere of Tevye in New York!  Its only other outing was at The Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills in 2021,

Based on Sholom Aleichem’s beloved characters immortalized in Fiddler on the RoofTevye In New York! picks up where the original stories left off – following Tevye as he fights for his piece of the American Dream in the crowded streets of Manhattan’s lower East Side in 1914. Tevye and his daughters have made their way across the Atlantic Ocean, through Ellis Island, past “the big green lady”, and into the gritty melting pot of New York. Tevye’s humor and his unique relationship with his god help him through a myriad of challenges – including ‘high tech’ advances such as automobiles, electricity and the most curious contraption of all, the telephone!

Tom Dugan has had a long relationship with Tevye, having played the part in the Rahway High School (NJ) 1978 production of Fiddler on the Roof.  Like so many young people, it was while performing Tevye that Tom caught the acting bug that set him on his lifelong path in Theatre. A few years ago, wanting to revisit this wonderful character, he reached out to The Shalom Aleichem Family Foundation (Some of whom had seen his play Wiesenthal Off-Broadway) and was granted their blessing to write and perform Tevye In New York!

Tevye in New York! will run from December 21st through January 7th at the Delray Beach Playhouse.  Tickets are $44 each ($54 with lunch) and can be purchased online at www.delraybeachplayhouse.com or by phone at 561-272-1281.  The Delray Beach Playhouse is located at 950 NW 9th Street in Delray Beach (33444}.

BOCA RATON, FL: Those irreverent princesses who amused and delighted audiences at the Kravis Center last May will toss their tiaras onto a stage in Boca Raton early next year.   Disenchanted, the fun-loving, subversive, and definitely not-for-the kiddies’ musical revue that proves happily-ever-after can be a ‘royal pain in the ass’, will be presented once again by Marcie Gorman and MNM Theatre Company. The show will run at The Studio at Mizner Park from January 12th through January 21st.

“We all had so much fun with this show,” Gorman said recently.  “Our cast, our crew, and of course our audiences left the theatre every night laughing and applauding!  When the opportunity arose to bring the princesses back – this time to Boca – how could we say no!?

Disenchanted is very funny, extremely clever, and yes – a little bit raunchy,” she continues, “But these princesses have a lot to say about… well just about everything. And as we all know there can be a lot of truth in comedy – and in satire.”

“It is such a pleasure to bring Disenchanted back to the stage and to Boca Raton,” says the show’s director, Jonathan Van Dyke. “This timeless tale is certain to bring audiences lots of laughs and an unexpected level of poignancy. And this knockout cast and team of musicians will definitely bring a new vision to what happens after happily ever after!”

MNM’s mission has always been to hire South Florida talent, and Van Dyke has once again assembled a stellar cast of local princesses: Reprising their May roles are Kat Gold as Mulan and Rapunzel, Leah Sessa as the Little Mermaid and Belle, and Vallery Valentine as the Princess Who Kissed the Frog. Stephanny Noria will step into Pocahontas’ and Badroulbadour’s shoes, Shelley Keelor and Kathryn Nash will share Snow White duties, Ashley Rubin and Jordan Gonzalez will rotate as Cinderella, and Sabrina Lynn Gore will play Sleeping Beauty.

MNM is also one of the very few companies in South Florida that continues to use live musicians:  MAC and Bistro Award-winner Bobby Peaco will rotate with Ryan Crout as Disenchanted’s Musical Directors and pianists and will lead the production’s musical team of Julie Jacobs on Drums and Robert Ziawinski on Bass.

BOCA RATON, FL:  Honoring its high standard of musical excellence, Spanish River Concerts’ 2024 Season will once again be comprised of uniquely original productions featuring many new performers – along with some familiar faces – in all new programs.  The season will begin in January with a tribute to some of Broadway’s greatest musicals. Subsequent concerts will feature Classic Rock, Pop, and a unique ‘mash-up’ of The Sound of Music and Les Miserables.  Three special events will feature the Jerusalem Tenors, Master Musicians (with a Q&A), and a tribute to New York’s iconic Brill Building.  (See below for more details.)

Spanish River Concerts’ musical director Tomer Adaddi, conducts the Spanish River Concerts Orchestra, along with a roster of top-tier singers.  Adaddi is a multi-award-winning composer, pianist, and musical producer who has collaborated with numerous international stars, including Andrea Bocelli, Michael Buble, Il Volo, and Mercedes Sossa, among others.

Nearly 20 years ago, when Florrie and Seymour Morgenstern first mobilized their friends to create Spanish River Concerts, their vision was to present four concerts for the shared enjoyment of their community.  The 2024 Spanish River Concerts line-up continues the Morgensterns’ legacy with four world-class concerts and three special event concerts that are sure to entertain and inspire.

All concerts will begin at 8 pm on Mondays and Tuesdays, and will take place at the Spanish River Church, located at 2400 Yamato Road in Boca Raton (33431). Series and individual tickets will be on sale as of October 30th and will be available online at www.spanishriverconcerts.org.  Concert Series prices range from $167 to $338.  Tickets for individual concerts are also available and range in price from $48 – $94.  Discounts of 20% are available for groups of 8 or more.  Tickets can also be purchased by phone at 800-716-6975

The 2024 Spanish River Concerts Series:

Symphonic Broadway: The New Chapter (January 8, 9)
The Spanish River Orchestra conducted by Maestro Adaddi brings Broadway to Boca – the way it was meant to be heard! SRC veterans Marc Devigne, Chassey Bennett, and Justin Sargent welcome Broadway’s Adrienne Stiefel for an all-new revue, featuring favorites from the best musicals of the Great White Way, including Funny Girl, Wicked, Mamma Mia, Lion King, Hamilton, Michael Jackson – the Musical, and many more.

Classic Rock Hits on SRC RADIO (January 22, 23)
We love this collection of hits from the 60s, 70s, and 80s so much that we created SRC RADIO – our own fictional radio station to take you on a journey through the golden era of Classic Rock. Sit back and relax, or get up and dance to the greatest hits of Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, 3 Dog Night, Fleetwood Mac, Elton John, Tina Turner, Queen, and so many more. So don’t touch that dial because you don’t want to miss the Spanish River Orchestra and the amazing voices of rockers Brook Wood, Aaron LaVigne, Katie Boeck, and Dustin Brayley, delivering a rockin’ blockbuster as only Spanish River can!

Omer & Friends (February 19, 20)
Come see why our subscribers rave about the talent, charisma, and versatility Omer Shaish displays every time he walks on stage. Loved for his wonderful performances with Kol Esperanza and Four Best Men, Omer always brings his “A” game. This year, he introduces newcomers Ruby Lewis and Hila Zittoun to SRC, as they join him and the Spanish River Orchestra for an unforgettable evening of the beloved Popular, Broadway, Hebrew, and Yiddish songs that inspired his storied journey from Tel Aviv to Broadway.

Triumph of the Human Spirit  (March 18, 19)
This uplifting mash-up features the music of two of the most iconic musicals ever written. Individually, The Sound of Music and Les Miserables are musical masterpieces; but combine their incredible repertoire with Maestro Adaddi’s arrangements, and the magnificent voices of all-stars: David Burnham, Kathy Voytko, Randal Keith, Heidi Webster, and Andrew Ragone, and you have a season finale guaranteed to hold you over until 2025!

Special Events:

Jerusalem Tenors – with Special Guest (February 5, 6)
Back in 2014, we searched the globe for just the right voices to create the Jerusalem Tenors. Our audiences agree that Vladyslav Gorai, Felix Livshitz, and Alexander Gunko fit the bill perfectly. We thought this would be a wonderful time to reunite the tenors on our stage. They welcome special guest and longtime SRC favorite Betty Lipska for an evening of Hebrew, Yiddish, International, and Crossover music – all, of course, accompanied by the Spanish River Orchestra.

Minds of the Masters (March 4, 5)
Last season, Natalie Tenenbaum (piano) and Filip Pogady (violin) mesmerized our audiences with our Boundless Virtuosity program. We couldn’t wait to bring both of them back for an all-new production with the Spanish River Orchestra. This year’s program features the genius of Natalie and Filip, with the inimitable voices of San Francisco Opera alums Daniel Montenegro and Maria Valdez. This very approachable Classical, Popular, and Crossover concert appeals to any type of music-lover and will include a brief audience/artist Q&A segment to provide insight into the remarkable mindset that drives these world-class performers.

Brill-iance!  (March 11, 12)
The Brill Building in Manhattan was the epicenter of the American music scene from the World War II era through the 1960s. This site was home to some of the most prolific popular composers, many of whom went on to become well-known singer-songwriters and recording artists in the 1970s. In fact, Carole King, Paul Simon, Neil Diamond, Burt Bacharach, and Neil Sedaka all got their start in the Brill Building. Fabulous singers Jenna Rubaii, John-Mark McGaha, Nicole Kaplan, and David Toole join the Spanish River Orchestra to tell some of the Brill-insider stories and to celebrate the renowned artists who paid their dues at this historical institution.

WEST PALM BEACH, FL:  A deviously delicious Broadway horror comedy rock sci-fi musical, Little Shop of Horrors has devoured the hearts of theatre-goers for over 40 years. In fact, it is currently enjoying an extremely successful run Off Broadway.   Entr’Acte Theatrix will present this beloved cult classic, created by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken (Disney’s The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin), from November 9th through November 19th at the William G. Skaff Center in West Palm Beach.

“Over 20 years ago, we produced this show,” says Entr’Acte Theatrix Founder and Producer Vicki Halmos.  “I was researching by phone possibilities for the puppets used to portray Audrey II, when the morning news was interrupted by the events of 9/11, which I watched live TV. I decided to proceed with that production, to keep some level of normalcy going in my life and that of the cast and crew. As our production proceeded, I saw many parallels between the events of 9/11 and the message of Little Shop. Now, 20 years later, with this new production, we have another evidence of an evil force with the intention of ‘coming to eat the world whole”, with the events of Israel’s current challenge with the horrendous forces of evil. But, beyond the ironic parallel between these productions of Little Shop, we are fiercely working towards an excellent production to present to our community and let them draw their own conclusions.  By the way, though, I highly doubt that the writers of Little Shop had this ironic analogy in mind when they wrote this entertaining piece of musical theater.”

Meek floral assistant Seymour Krelborn stumbles across a new breed of plant he names “Audrey II” – after his coworker crush. This R&B-singing carnivore promises unending fame and fortune to the down and out Krelborn as long as he keeps feeding it…blood. Over time, though, Seymour discovers Audrey II’s out of this world origins and intent towards global domination!

“I am very excited to be helming Little Shop of Horrors,” says the show’s Director, Carlo Sabusap.  “Little Shop is one of those great classic Broadway musicals that reaches out to all audiences in its comedy, its sincerity, and its music. Our production will have some unique elements that I am sure will give those who experience it something to talk about, while preserving the memorable moments masterfully created by writer Howard Ashman and composer Alan Menken. I am so proud of the magic this cast and crew is creating, and I hope that the audience will feel the same magic that I see in them.”

Sabusap’s Little Shop of Horrors cast includes Ryan Townsend as Seymour Krelborn, Aletta Kemp as Audrey, Murphy Hayes as Mr. Mushnik, Chase Stante as Audrey II, Greg Halmos as Orin Scrivell, Pamela Hankerson as Ronette, Sarah Romeo as Crystal, Jamie Wade as Chiffon, Nik Rosa as Puppeteer/Swing, Sebastian Rukes and Nicole Hernandez as Ensemble/Swings, and Kai as Ensemble.

The production’s Music Director is Roger Blankenship, and the Assistant Music Director is Ed Kolcz.  The show’s Music Captain is Ryan Townsend, Kai is the show’s Choreographer, Costumes are by Ashley Carlisle, and Sets and Sound are provided by Theatre of Collaborative Arts.  The Production Stage Manager is Elizabeth Southwell.
