Sol Theatre will debut its brand new company, Evening Star Productions with a performance of V. Glasgow Koste’s  I Remain… J. Austen in a limited run from September 27th – 29th.

The play, which will star Sol Theatre alumna Ireland Glennon, posits that Jane Austen is alive and well and living any place she chooses to ‘body forth’ at the flamboyant age of 218-going-on-forever. Quirky, jubilant and curious, this Jane’s ironic and comic edge reveals a fiercely independent woman, liberated by her work’s immortality to speak her mind and open her heart.  Glennon received glowing reviews when she first played the role in the Sol Children Theatre’s production of the play last May, bringing to life a Jane  Austen, as imagined by Koste ‘not staled by custom or stereotype; facing death and the loss of love; laughing at herself; reveling in the sound and sense of language; burning with work; demanding, raging, discovering, and still growing.’

An offshoot of Sol Children Theatre, Evening Star Productions will focus on plays for more for mature audiences, and feature adult, professional actors, as well as young people working towards a career in theatre.  The company will offer serious young adult actors, stage managers, and designers the opportunity to push the boundaries of their knowledge and talent in a safe and highly professional environment; enable them to prepare for college, regional, and professional theatre companies; and offer them the opportunity to be critiqued by regional professionals and critics to receive objective evaluations vital to their personal and professional growth.Logo 1

Auditions for the Boca Raton Theatre Guild/Peter J. Loewy production of RESPECT: A Musical Journey of Women will be held on Monday, September 23 at the Mizner Park Cultural Arts Center/Studio Theatre, 2nd Floor (201 Plaza Real, Boca Raton, Florida 33432), from 10 am – 4 pm.

This is a return of the very first, wildly popular Florida production of RESPECT and will be directed by the show’s original director, Peter J. Loewy. RESPECT: A Musical Journey of Women details the journey of women told through Top-40 music. Combining excerpts of 60 songs including “Someone to Watch Over Me,” “I Will Survive,” “I Will Follow Him,” “These Boots are Made for Walking,” “What’s Love Got to Do with it,” and “Hero” with women’s own stories about finding dreams, lost love, relationship issues, entering the workforce, gaining independence, and more.

Casting:
4 females between the ages of 25 – 45, including one African American female.
All must have exceptional singing voices and move extremely well.
A very, very keen sense of comedy is a must for all characters.
Auditions are by appointment only. 

Please prepare 1 up-tempo number and one ballad.  Pop, 60’s, and/or contemporary rock preferred.

The Boca Raton Theatre Guild to Produce
Two Musicals for its 2013-2014 Season

The Boca Raton Theatre Guild has chosen to produce two acclaimed musicals for their 2013-2014 season.  The commercial and critical success of their recent production of Chicago was one of the key factors inspiring the change.  In the past their seasons have consisted of one musical and one straight play.

The BRTG season will open with They’re Playing Our Song, the Neil Simon/Marvin Hamlisch disco era musical, and will conclude with the Stephen Schwartz, Bob Fosse, Roger O. Hirson 1972 classic Pippin.

Producer/director Keith Garsson explains the Guild’s decision: “The recent loss of composer Marvin Hamlisch led us to re-examine his unique body of work to see which shows have been overlooked. It didn’t take long to come across They’re Playing Our Song and realize that its energetic disco score, New York setting and funny script by Neil Simon was a terrific choice to insert into the spot usually reserved for our straight play.”

 They’re Playing Our Song will star Carbonell Award winners Margot Moreland and Oscar Cheda as fictional counterparts to the real-life romance between Hamlisch and lyricist Carol Bayer-Sager. Ms. Moreland recently wowed Theatre Guild audiences in her critically acclaimed performance of last year’s Sweet Charity and Mr. Cheda, has just completed a run in the critically acclaimed production of In the Heights at Actor’s Playhouse. Caryl Fantel will serve as musical director for the production.

The season will conclude with the Guild’s traditional ‘big’ musical.  According to musical theatre scholar Scott Miller in his 1996 book, From Assassins to West Side Story, “Pippin is a largely under-appreciated musical with a great deal more substance to it than many people realize…”  Currently enjoying an extremely successful revival on Broadway, Pippin uses the premise of a mysterious performance troupe, led by a Leading Player, to tell the story of a young prince and his search for meaning and significance.

Says producer Garsson: “Pippin features a collection of dance-in the-aisles tunes.  It ran for years on Broadway, beginning in 1972.  Of course that was over forty years ago… expect some innovations!”

 “And,” Garsson continues, “We’re really pleased Ron Hutchins, who created all that brilliant choreography in Chicago will be joining us for both shows this season as we continue to grow our productions as our audience demands!”

The Boca Raton Theatre Guild is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to producing professional productions and advancing the art of theatre in the South Florida community.

Award-winning actor, singer, author, raconteur, and South Florida favorite Avi Hoffman will return to the Willow Theatre at Sugar Sand Park with Still Jewish After All These Years: A Life in the Theatre, a celebration of his life in show business.

One of South Florida’s busiest and most popular actors, Hoffman has just Avi-Chai-colorcompleted a triumphant run in the Boca Raton Theatre Guild’s production of Chicago, and is currently garnering rave reviews in Outré Theatre Company’s An Illiad.  Still Jewish After All These Years will run from May 10th -19th.

Accompanied by pianist Caryl Fantel, Hoffman will invite audiences on a casual and intimate tour of his multifaceted career and his extraordinary life in show business. Filled with songs and stories, reminiscences of performances, encounters with greats… and not so greats, Hoffman’s Still Jewish… will, entertain, move, and resonate with everyone.

Avi HoffmanAvi Hoffman has received national and critical recognition for his award-winning one man shows Too Jewish? and Too Jewish, Too! (Performer of the Year/NY Press Magazine; L.A. OVATION Award – Best Actor in a Musical; NY Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Award nominations).  Both these shows have been broadcast nationally on PBS.    His extensive resume includes groundbreaking productions of Songs of Paradise with Broadway impresario Joseph Papp and the NY productions of The Golden Land and The Rise of David Levinsky. Hoffman has performed all over the world, and has numerous theatre credits and multiple Carbonell and Curtain Up awards and nominations. He is currently featured as lawyer Sid Raskin in the STARZ TV series Magic City. He also appeared as ‘Ted’ on A&E’s The Glades and as ‘Teddy Wayne’ on NBC’s Law & Order, and was seen in the PBS documentary They Came for Good: A History of the Jews in the US.

‘Chicago’ – Murder, Mayhem, & Musical Theatre At Its Best!

Add sex and sparkle to a combustible mixture of murder, greed, corruption, and betrayal, blend with music and lyrics by the incomparable John Kander and Fred Ebb, stir in the unmistakable look of Bob Fosse’s choreography, combine with an incredibly talented cast of actors – and the result is the Boca Raton Theatre Guild’s upcoming production of Chicago.

Chicago will open on March 1st and run through March 17th at the Willow Theatre in Sugar Sand Park in Boca Raton.

In Chicago, John Kander, Fred Ebb, and Bob Fosse created a work that flawlessly evokes its vaudeville setting.  Flamboyant flappers, crooked lawyers, and merry murderesses are all part of a sparkling script and a classic score that includes “All That Jazz,” “Cell Block Tango” and “Razzle Dazzle.”

BRTG producer/director Keith Garsson has assembled a stellar cast to bring some of Broadway’s most beloved and well known characters to life: Avi Hoffman (Billy Flynn), Patti Gardner (Roxie Hart), Krisha Marcano (Velma Kelly), Sally Bondi (Matron Mama Morton), Ken Clement (Amos Hart), and Matthew Korinko (The Announcer) are all on board and looking forward to playing in this classic tale of “…violence, envy, exploitation, adultery and treachery—all those things we hold near and dear to our hearts!”

Hap Erstein (Palm Beach Post/PalmBeachArtsPaper.com) listed the Boca Raton Theatre Guild’s recent production of A.R. Gurney’s Sylvia as one of his 2012 ‘10 Favorites of the Year’, and Chicago promises to continue to enhance the Guild’s reputation as one of South Florida’s up and coming professional theatre companies.

“This company – and this production – is going to feature the best of the best,” Garsson says.  “Just getting the cast together has been a dream, and working with them is proving to be all I could have hoped for… and more.”

Garsson’s Velma Kelly, Krisha Marcano, originated the role of ‘Squeak’ in the Broadway production of The Color Purple.  Marcano’s impressive background includes stints with the Martha Graham Dance Company and the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, and roles in Fosse, Disney’s Aida, Sweet Charity, Smokey Joe’s Cafe, and the film Preacher’s Kid.  She holds a BFA from SUNY Purchase and is the co-chair of the business group at Career Transitions for Dancers and the founder of KM Studios.

Avi Hoffman’s recent performances in LUV at the Plaza Theatre, and Parade Productions’ Brooklyn Boy earned him critical praise, and his turn as Wilbur Turnblad in Actor’s Playhouse’ 2012 production of Hairspray earned him a Carbonell Award. Hoffman is also known for his award winning one man shows Too Jewish? and Too Jewish, Too! (Performer of the Year ’95 – NY Press Magazine; L.A. OVATION award – Best Actor In a Musical 2001; NY Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle award nominations). On television he portrays lawyer Sid Raskin in the Starz TV series MAGIC CITY.  Avi’s newest show Still Jewish After All These Years will run from May 10th – 19th at the Boca Raton Theatre Guild.

Patti Gardner says she “is thrilled, honored and terrified to be performing the role of Roxie Hart in Chicago”. Known as one of South Florida’s busiest actresses, Patti just reprised her role in The Interview for The Women’s Theatre Project and was recently seen in LUV at the Plaza Theatre in Manalapan. She is a Carbonell Award-winner for her performance in Lips Together, Teeth Apart at Palm Beach Dramaworks, and has performed as the “Soap Star” in Menopause the Musical nationally for ten years.

                            An entirely different take on the ‘eternal triangle’!

“Give a dog a woman’s name and you start to treat her like one,” one of the characters in Sylvia  comments during A.R. Gurney’s clever, funny, and unusual play about a man, a dog, and the chaos their relationship generates.  Gurney (Love Letters, The Cocktail Hour, The Dining Room) taps into the fragility of human relationships, and the joys and frustrations of pet ownership to create what is often cited as his best work – a delicate balance of humor and poignancy.

The Boca Raton Theatre Guild’s production of Sylvia will run from September 28th through October 14th at the Willow Theatre in Sugar Sand Park.

Sylvia was first produced in 1995 at the Manhattan Theatre Club in New York, and starred Sarah Jessica Parker and Blythe Danner. Called ‘delicious and dizzy’ by the New York Times, the play received Drama Desk Award nominations for Outstanding Play, Outstanding Actress in a Play (Parker), and Outstanding Costume Design.

Sylvia focuses on Greg, a middle-aged businessman disenchanted with his job and somewhat adrift in life, who finds a stray in the park—a dog named Sylvia who absolutely adores him, much to the consternation of his wife Kate. Jacqueline Laggy (Other People’s Money, Chapter Two) will play Sylvia, the energetic lab-poodle mix, and Keith Garsson (Other People’s Money, Chapter Two) and Patti Gardner (The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife) will play Greg and Kate.  Mario Betto (The Sisters Rosensweig, playwright – Combing Through Life’s Tangles) will also star.

Genie Croft, who recently helmed the BRTG’s sold out production of Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill, will direct: “I’m delighted to be directing A R Gurney’s intelligent, insightful, hilarious script,” Croft says. “Gurney’s variation on the plot of the married, menopausal male falling in love with an exciting, enticing younger woman, who just happens to be an adorable stray dog, offers keen observations into American life.  Yet it is first and foremost a love story, deeply comical and touching, because Sylvia remains a dog with an animal’s instincts and urges.”  Croftwas also responsible for guiding the Guild’s successful productions of Neil Simon’s Broadway Bound and Charles Busch’s The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife.

to feature some of South Florida’s
Top Talent!

Carbonell Award-winning actor Avi Hoffman will star as Billy Flynn in the Boca Raton Theatre Guild’s upcoming production of Chicago. The classic Kander and Ebb musical will run from March 1st through March 17th at the Willow Theatre in Sugar Sand Park.  Sally Bondi will play Matron Ma Morton, and Ken Clement has been cast as Amos Hart. Auditions for other roles in the production will be held on Monday, September 10th, from 5 pm – 9 pm at the Willow Theatre.

Chicago will be directed by Keith Garson, and choreographed by Ron Hutchins. Eric Alsford will serve as the show’s musical director.

Populated with flamboyant flappers, crooked lawyers, and merry murderesses, Chicago is a musical tale of “murder, greed, corruption, violence, exploitation, adultery, and treachery – all those things we hold near and dear to our hearts.”  With a sparkling script and a classic score that includes “All That Jazz,” “Cell Block Tango” and “Razzle Dazzle”, Chicago has everything that makes musical theatre great.

Avi Hoffman took home a 2011 Carbonell Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Musical for his portrayal of Wilbur Turnblad in the Actors Playhouse production of Hairspray. Other recent roles include novelist Eric Weiss in Parade Productions’ production of Donald Margulies’ Brooklyn Boy at the Studio Theatre in Boca Raton; the lead role in Tracy Lett’s Superior Donuts at Gablestage (Broadway World Award for Best Featured Actor, and Carbonell award nomination for Best Actor in a Play); and Kolenkhov in the Florida Rep production of You Can’t Take it With You.  He is well known for his award winning one man shows Too Jewish? and Too Jewish, Too! (Performer of the Year ’95 – NY Press Magazine; L.A. OVATION award – Best Actor In a Musical 2001; NY Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle award nominations).  On television, Hoffman portrays lawyer Sid Raskin in Starz TV series Magic City, and was featured as ‘Teddy Wayne’ in the NBC series Law and Order. He also starred in the motion picture The Imported Bridegroom and was seen in the PBS documentary They Came For Good: A History of the Jews in the U.S.

A.R. Gurney’s Sylvia and Kander & Ebb’s Chicago
at the Willow Theatre in Sugar Sand Park

The Boca Raton Theatre Guild’s 2012-2013 season will begin with a comedy, and end with a classic.  A.R. Gurney’s Sylvia, and Kander & Ebb’s Chicago will run in September and March at the Willow Theatre in Sugar Sand Park.

Director Genie Croft will helm Sylvia, which will run September 28th through October 14th.  Croft, who recently directed the BRTG’s sold out production of Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill, has also been responsible for guiding the Guild’s successful productions of Neil Simon’s Broadway Bound and Charles Busch’s The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife.   Sylvia is the comic tale of a middle-aged couple who move back to New York City. However, their new life is humorously upended when the husband adopts a most unusual canine. A.R. Gurney (Love Letters) has tapped into the fragility of human relationships, and the joys and frustrations of pet ownership and has created what most people feel is his best work – a delicate balance of humor and poignancy.  Patti Gardner (The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife) Jacqueline Laggy (Other People’s Money, Chapter Two), Keith Garsson (Other People’s Money, Broadway Bound), and Mario Betto (The Sisters Rosensweig, playwright – Combing Through Life’s Tangles) will star. In Chicago, John Kander, Fred Ebb, and Bob Fosse created a work that flawlessly evokes its vaudeville setting.  Flamboyant flappers, crooked lawyers, and merry murderesses are all part of a sparkling script and a classic score that includes “All That Jazz,” “Cell Block Tango” and “Razzle Dazzle.” Chicago’s songbook immediately became an integral part of the Broadway lexicon during its original Broadway run in 1975.

Two of South Florida top talents will join director Keith Garsson to lead Chicago’s creative team: Choreographer Ron Hutchins and Music Director Eric Alsford.

Says Garsson, who also serves as the BRTG’s Artistic Director: “Hopefully our audiences will be pleased with our continued evolution away from community theatre. Each year our productions have grown significantly in both ambition and execution. With Chicago we intend to leverage even more of South Florida’s top talent.” (Tickets: $27 if purchased before January 1st, 2013, $30 if purchased after January 1st).

The Boca Raton Theatre Guild is also pleased to welcome the Women’s Theatre Project to the Willow Theatre. “We have had great success importing TWTP’s The Year of Magical Thinking and Bridge & Tunnel into our past two seasons,” says Keith Garson. “Their provocative plays will add a new and critical dimension to the theatre at Sugar Sand Park. Their artistic Director Genie Croft has directed all of our plays for the past several seasons, so their move to the Willow is both logical and inspiring.”

April 23, 2012: The Boca Raton Theatre Guild has extended the run of Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill.   Tickets are now on sale for three extra performances – Saturday May 5th at 2 & 8 p.m., and Sunday, May 6th at 2 p.m.   Even though the play, starring Carbonell nominated actress/jazz artist Paulette Dozier, was entirely sold out more than two weeks before opening night, demand for tickets continued.  The Boca Raton Theatre Guild requested the extension, and the Willow Theatre agreed.

Producer Keith Garsson is extremely pleased with this development, “Paulette Dozier is a major talent, and she and our director, Genie Croft, have put together an amazing show.”

Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill is set in 1959 in a seedy bar in Philadelphia, wherein Billie Holiday is giving one of her final performances.  More than a dozen musical numbers are interlaced with the iconic singer’s reminiscences of her life. Her salty, graphic, humorous, and triumphant memories combine to create a riveting portrait of the woman and her music.

Dozier welcomes the challenges created by the music, the script, and by Holiday’s story itself. “There’s a lot about her life that I don’t necessarily relate to,” says Dozier. “But the pain that she describes at different points throughout the show — I admire her because no matter what she experienced, she battled through it.”
