Sol Children Theatre provides quality theatrical experiences for
young actors and their audiences
Boca Raton’s Sol Children Theatre is a thriving, active, and talented troupe of young performers who will be on stage in a variety of productions through April and May. From Austen to Improv, the company will provide family friendly entertainment at extremely reasonable prices.

On April 27^tthat 7 pm audiences are invited to participate in the company’s Improv Comedy Night 2: Electric Boogaloo. No scripts, no plot – just lots of imagination, comedy, and fun.

On May 3^rd & 4^th Sol will present I Remain … J. Austen. V. Glasgow Koste’s one-woman show posits that Austin is alive and well and living any place she chooses to “body forth” at the flamboyant age of 218-going-on-forever. Quirky, jubilant and curious, this Jane’s ironic and comic edge reveals a fiercely independent woman, liberated by her work’s immortality to speak her mind and open her heart. Sol troupe member Ireland Glennon gives a tour de force performance bringing to life a Jane not staled by custom or stereotype; facing death and the loss of love; laughing at herself; reveling in the sound and sense of language; burning with work; demanding, raging, discovering, and still growing.

Inspired by the timeless comedic styles of Laurel and Hardy and The Three Stooges, and patterned after English folk tales, pantomime, and 17^th Century puppet shows, Punch & Judy, and the Three Sillies (May 17^th-19^th) includes a typically convoluted plot, mistaken identities, and pure comedy – all of which combine to provide perfectly silly entertainment for the entire family.

Registration is now open for Sol’s summer camp program, run in partnership with Olympic Heights Community High School and the Palm Beach County School District. Sol offers a comprehensive and nurturing environment for young artists to expand their horizons while at the same time, staging a full-length, fully-staged production in which each child has the opportunity to flaunt his or her talents and progress. This year’s productions are Disney’s The Little Mermaid (July 5 at 2 pm and 7 pm), and Thoroughly Modern Millie (August 2 at 2 and 7 pm).

Award-winning actor, singer, author, raconteur, and South Florida favorite Avi Hoffman will return to the Willow Theatre at Sugar Sand Park with Still Jewish After All These Years: A Life in the Theatre, a celebration of his life in show business.

One of South Florida’s busiest and most popular actors, Hoffman has just completed a triumphant run in the Boca Raton Theatre Guild’s production of Chicago, and is currently garnering rave reviews in Outré Theatre Company’s An Illiad. Still Jewish After All These Years will run from May 10^th -19^th.

Accompanied by pianist Caryl Fantel, Hoffman will invite audiences on a casual and intimate tour of his multifaceted career and his extraordinary life in show business. Filled with songs and stories, reminiscences of performances, encounters with greats… and not so greats, Hoffman’s Still Jewish… will, entertain, move, and resonate with everyone.

Avi Hoffman has received national and critical recognition for his award-winning one man shows Too Jewish? and Too Jewish, Too! (Performer of the Year/NY Press Magazine; L.A. OVATION Award – Best Actor in a Musical; NY Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Award nominations). Both these shows have been broadcast nationally on PBS. His extensive resume includes groundbreaking productions of Songs of Paradise with Broadway impresario Joseph Papp and the NY productions of The Golden Land and The Rise of David Levinsky. Hoffman has performed all over the world, and has numerous theatre credits and multiple Carbonell and Curtain Up awards and nominations. He is currently featured as lawyer Sid Raskin in the STARZ TV series Magic City. He also appeared as ‘Ted’ on A&E’s The Glades and as ‘Teddy Wayne’ on NBC’s Law & Order, and was seen in the PBS documentary They Came for Good: A History of the Jews in the US.

The Boca Raton Theatre Guild is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to producing professional productions and advancing the art of theatre in the South Florida community.

‘Yo dog … it’s time to float, freeze, pop & lock …’

On Saturday April 27 at 7 p.m. Sol Children Theatre will present Improv Comedy Night 2: Electric Boogaloo at their own 70 seat venue, located at 3333 North Federal Highway in Boca Raton.

Recently seen at the Florida Renaissance Festival ‘dressed up like fops and wenches’, the company’s performers are looking forward to donning ‘80s garb and ‘hitting the stage breakdancin’, and are diligently preparing for a night of ‘wacky, anything-goes improvisational insanity.’

Started by artistic director/producer Rosalie Grant in 2002, and now celebrating their tenth season, Sol Children Theatre’s goal is to provide children with a safe, secure, and highly professional theatre experience. Recent productions have included Rumplestilskin and The Ash Girl. Sol also runs a very successful summer camp program in partnership with Olympic Heights Community High School and the Palm Beach County School District.

“Improvisation involves dialogue and actions created spontaneously in response to suggestions from the audience,” explains Grant. “There is no script and no plot. Game playing techniques put the performers in situations where they must use their imagination and comedic instincts, and what evolves is a combination of stand-up comedy and game show—with hilarious results. In the unpredictable world of improvisational comedy, anything can happen” says Grant, “And it usually does. But what makes improv so unique and engaging is that the audience participates in the mayhem.”

The multi-award winning author of Stuff, Moscow, 37 Postcards, Suite Surrender and Open Season takes us on a wild ride – careening through seven short plays filled with very funny and wonderfully human characters.

Parade Productions’ second show of their second season will once again feature Michael McKeever – this time as playwright as well as actor. The multi-talented McKeever will star in The Whole Caboodle, a wickedly funny collection of some of his most celebrated short plays.

The production will preview on January 31^st, open on February 1^st, and run through February 24^th in the Mizner Park Cultural Arts Center’s Studio Theatre, at 201 Plaza Real in Boca Raton.

Stephen Sondheim, Abe Lincoln, Munchkins, ambivalent lesbians, even Grant Wood’s ‘American Gothic’ – the award winning playwright skewers them all as he takes apart and reassembles a series of lovably flawed characters and pop culture icons with razor sharp humor and extra-keen insight – with hilarious results.

McKeever, who has just completed a successful run as Macy’s most irascible elf, Crumpet, in Parade’s recent production of David Sedris’ The SantaLand Diaries, is extremely pleased to be continuing his relationship with the young theatre company:

“I’m delighted Parade Productions is presenting this collection,” he says. “These seven pieces represent the best of my short plays. Putting them together was like finding the perfect combination of funny. Even more so, I love working with our director Kim St. Leon. She has a wonderful gift for humor, and has put together a fabulous group of actors. I couldn’t be more happy.”

Kim St. Leon agrees: “It’s all magic,” she says of The Whole Caboodle. “That’s the great thing about theatre. When it all comes together, it’s an experience you’re not going to get on the street . . .”

Elena Maria Garcia, Jacqueline Laggy, Clay Cartland, Casey Dressler, and Candace Caplin will also star in the production.
Caplin, who doubles as the the company’s executive director, says, “We’re excited about Caboodle. Who wouldn’t be? You take Michael McKeever, add Kim St Leon, and you’ve got combustible comedy. We’ve got a great cast, a great cast of characters,” she continues. “When it comes to comedy, you’re not going to do better than Michael Mc Keever and Elena Maria Garcia. We’re lucky they, and the rest of the cast, were available, and that it all came together. It’s going to be a lot of fun.”

Parade Productions is also offering their audiences an opportunity to support the company, and experience theatre in a uniquely first hand manner. For a tax deductible donation of $100 or more, patrons can ‘play a part’ in The Whole Caboodle, and make a ‘walk on’ appearance on stage during the play.

The versatile Michael McKeever, who recently won a Silver Palm award for his play, Moscow, and a Carbonell Award for Best New Work for his play, Stuff, explores every aspect of the human condition in his work, which incorporates a wide variety of styles and subject matter. He has been honored with an NEA Residency Grant (New Theatre, Miami) and has been a 3-time finalist for Humana Fest’s nationally renowned Heideman Award. He is the proud recipient of three Carbonell Awards; four Curtain Up Awards; and two Florida Individual Artist Fellowships. Six of his plays have been produced at City Theatre’s prestigious Summer Shorts Festival in Miami. He has been a finalist several times at both the Key West Theatre Festival and the Sarasota Festival of New Plays. He is also an award-winning actor and designer. He resides in South Florida and is a member of the Dramatists Guild and Actors’ Equity.

“What’s as much fun as Christmas?” asks Parade Productions’ director Kim St. Leon. “Directing David Sedaris’ wickedly funny script, The Santaland Diaries, with Michael McKeever!”

The Santaland Diaries will open Parade Productions’ second season on December 13^th, and run through December 23^rd at the Studio Theatre at Mizner Park in Boca Raton.

The Santaland Diarieshilariouslyrelates David Sedaris’ experiences when he reluctantly worked as an elf in Macy’s Christmastime Santaland display, and offers an uproarious behind-the-scenes look at how department stores manufacture Christmas spirit.

“The play is witty and smart and tells truths about our heart and our callousness, all the while making us laugh,” St. Leon says. “It truly is a celebration of the human spirit covered in holiday commercialism. And Michael McKeever is a dream to direct.”

Parade Productions’ debut season was an unqualified success. Their production of Donald Margulies’ Brooklyn Boy sold out all twelve performances, and a subsequent reading of Stuart Meltzer’s play, Better Than Damn Good, also did very well.

Candace Caplin, the driving force behind Parade Productions, and the company’s executive director, explains: “The audience loved Michael Mc Keever in Better Than Damn Good – so we decided to bring him back! It was a great night – there’s nothing like a group of people coming together and laughing. We’re excited about SantaLand; you take David Sedaris, and mix in Michael Mc Keever, and you end up with something special. It should be a lot of fun.”

McKeever is pleased to have the opportunity to revisit Sedaris’ (s)elf. “There’s a reason this play is one of the most produced every year,” he says. “It’s not only full of sardonic wit and humor, but incredibly insightful as well.”

The versatile McKeever, who recently won a Carbonell Award for Best New Work for his play, Stuff, explores every aspect of the human condition in his work, which incorporates a wide variety of styles and subject matter. Humorist, comedian, author, and radio contributor David Sedaris has been described as ‘the rock star of writers’. He first gained public attention when National Public Radio broadcast his essay ‘Santaland Diaries’ in 1992. Much of Sedaris’ humor is autobiographical and self-deprecating, and often concerns his family life, his middle-class upbringing, his Greek heritage, unusual jobs, education, drug use, obsessive behaviors, and his life in general. Sedaris has been compared to James Thurber, Dorothy Parker, Spalding Gray, Mark Twain, and Nathanial West and was hailed by the New Yorker as one of the funniest writers in America. His books and essays have sold well over seven million copies.

Who said crime doesn’t pay!?

The Women’s Theatre Project will present Barbara Pease Weber’s contemporary comedy, Delval Divas, at the Willow Theatre in Sugar Sand Park from November 2^nd through November 18^th. This will be the theatre company’s first production in their new venue.

Sally Bondi, Lisa Braun, Lela Elam, Jacqueline Laggy, Jessica K. Peterson, and Karen Stephens star in the timely comedy about six capable and intelligent women who just happen to be in prison and find themselves facing a series of challenges – including changes in lifestyle, corruption, and murder.

“I began to write Delval Divas in 2000 and, thinking back, it’s almost like I had a crystal ball into the future,” says playwright Barbara Pease Weber. “Since I was, at the time, an actor in my 40s, I decided that I wanted to try to write a comedy involving strong, educated and bright middle aged women. I considered an office setting then decided it would be boring. Thought about a gym setting. Nah, boring! Then I asked myself, where would a group of well educated, successful and intelligent women find themselves together? A-ha! In the slammer for their various and sundry corporate misdeeds. Hence, Delval Divas was born in my head.”

Weber’s timing couldn’t have been better: “Little did I know at the time I began to write my story that the Enron and Martha Stewart scandals were about to explode,” she says, “And that later in the decade, scandals involving Bernie Madoff, Country Wide Financial, Fannie Mae and Wall Street in general would keep Delval Divas a timely piece.”

Director Genie Croft is in charge of the Divas: “Rehearsing Delval Divas is a creative and imaginative journey as we delve through the process of unraveling the upheavals these characters are trying to manipulate to their personal advantage,” she explains. “Working through the fabric of this clever script has been very rewarding. I’m delighted with the nuanced development of these Divas by my very talented cast. So far I have not had to sentence anyone to solitary confinement!”

Delval Divas will run from November 2^nd through November 18^th, with performances on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 8 pm, and on Saturdays and Sundays at 2 p.m.

Halloween is just around the corner, and who better to celebrate with than the denizens of Dr. Frank N. Furter’s home-sweet-castle in Richard O’Brien’s beloved cult classic, The Rocky Horror Show. And Entr’Acte Theatrix is inviting audiences to come do the Time Warp again… when they present ‘Rocky’ at the Crest Theatre at the Delray Center for the Arts at Old School Square from October 25^th through November 4^th.

The Rocky Horror Show is an outrageous assemblage of the most stereotypical science fiction movies, Marvel comics, Frankie Avalon/Annette Funicello outings and rock ‘n’ roll of every vintage. The play (upon which the classic film The Rocky Horror Picture Show is based) has grown from an experimental production originally produced in a small London theatre in June 1973, to a cult phenomenon with fans world-wide.

Rocky is also the quintessential audience participation show, and Entr’Acte will have what have come to be known as ‘survival kits’ available for purchase for those who want them.

Rocky ‘virgins’ and Rocky veterans alike will delight in Entr’Acte’s production, which features a talented young cast led by well known South Florida director Kevin Black, who is thrilled to be involved with the show: “As a teenager, I was completely obsessed with Rocky Horror,” he says. “And I’m so excited to finally get the chance to direct the stage version with this amazing cast. We’ve decided to put a fresh new twist on this cult classic, propelling this outrageous and campy piece into the next millennium.”

Among the cast are:

Ross Parris (Dr. Frank N. Furter) was most recently seen as James in Entr’Acte’s 2012 summer production of Jesus Christ Superstar. His previous theater credits include Oklahoma!, Guys and Dolls, and Annie at the Lakeworth Playhouse, and The Pajama Game with the Island Players in Palm Beach.

Elaine Flores (Janet) is a recent graduate in Musical Theater from the New World School of the Arts in Miami, and a Miami native. She has played Wendla in Spring Awakening (The Colony Theatre), Janet in the Drowsy Chaperone (Louise O. Gerrits Theatre), and Marcy Park in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (New World School of the Arts Studio Theatre). Elaine has also studied at the American Theatre Wing in NYC and appeared in the Major Motion Picture Rock of Ages.
Juan Gonzalez Machain (Brad) studied Vocal Performance and Musical Theatre at the University of Miami and was most recently seen as Peter in Entr’acte’s summer production of Jesus Christ Superstar. Other credits include Jesus in Entr’acte’s Godspell , Matt in The Fantasticks (The Lyric Theatre) Kenny in Edith Can Shoot Things and Hit Them (New Theatre in Miami) and Van in Dog Sees God (University of Miami). Juan has also toured Latin America for six months with the Argentinean Educational Theater Company ARTSPOT.
Entr’acte Theatrix, is a not-for-profit, semi-professional, showcase company for young actors, providing performance opportunities for emerging theatre artists. An off-shoot of the Palm Beach Principal Players, a twelve-year-old acting company for theater students of high school and college age, Entr’acte, as the name suggests, is the “next step,” from classroom to career, and provides the young actor his or her first professional, all-important, resume-building credit.

The Rocky Horror Show will run for 12 performances only, from October 25 – November 4, at the Crest Theatre at the Delray Beach Center for the Arts at Old School Square. Who ever said that crime doesn’t pay!?

The Women’s Theatre Project will present Barbara Pease Weber’s contemporary comedy Delval Divas at the Willow Theatre in Sugar Sand Park from November 2^nd through November 18^th. This will be the theatre company’s first production in their new venue.

“I’m delighted to open our season in our new home with this comedy exploring the devious techniques all the characters employ to manipulate their lives behind bars, as major upheavals threaten to turn them into “real criminals,” says the play’s director and The Women’s Theatre Project’s artistic director, Genie Croft.

“Delval Divas invites us into the posh and extravagant world of a tightly knit group of fortunate felons,” Croft explains. “This is an extremely funny peek into a prison comedy where four very clever con artists (all white collar female prisoners – doctor, technology wizard, lawyer, Wall Street stockbroker) have used their various talents and skills to turn their prison into a luxurious resort hotel.”

Six of South Florida’s most talented and popular actresses will inhabit the cellblock at the Delaware Valley Federal Correctional Facility: Sally Bondi, Lisa Braun, Jacqueline Laggy, Jessica K. Peterson, and Karen Stephens have been cast as the ‘pink collar’ criminals and Lela Elam will play their ‘own’ special guard, Lucille.

The cast is extremely enthusiastic about the play, and about working with The Women’s Theatre Project in the company’s new venue:

“Though I’m “not guilty”, if I have to spend time, there’s no other place I’d rather be then with my fellow Delval Divas at The Women’s Theatre Project!” Says Sally Bondi, who will play ‘Rosemary Adams, Esq’ (convicted lawyer and skimmer of reallocated mortgage funds). “First production in the new space – first time in the big house – coincidence? I think not!!!”

Lisa Braun, who will portray ‘Sharon Watson’ (arrested and charged with killing her first husband’s third wife) agrees. “I’m honored to be in my first show with TWTP (in a NON-musical, another first!), and I’m inspired by all the talented Divas who are providing such amazing tutelage in the art of incarceration on stage.”

Delval Divas will run from November 2^nd through November 18^th, with performances on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 8 pm, and on Saturdays and Sundays at 2 p.m.

The Willow Theatre at Sugar Sand Park is located at 300 South Military Trail in Boca Raton, just south of Palmetto Park Road. The Rocky Horror Show is an outrageous assemblage of the most stereotypical science fiction movies, Marvel comics, Frankie Avalon/Annette Funicello outings and rock ‘n’ roll of every vintage. The play (upon which the classic film The Rocky Horror Picture Show is based) has grown from an experimental production originally produced in a small London theatre to a cult phenomenon with fans world-wide.

An entirely different take on the ‘eternal triangle’!

“Give a dog a woman’s name and you start to treat her like one,” one of the characters in Sylvia comments during A.R. Gurney’s clever, funny, and unusual play about a man, a dog, and the chaos their relationship generates. Gurney (Love Letters, The Cocktail Hour, The Dining Room) taps into the fragility of human relationships, and the joys and frustrations of pet ownership to create what is often cited as his best work – a delicate balance of humor and poignancy.

The Boca Raton Theatre Guild’s production of Sylvia will run from September 28^th through October 14^th at the Willow Theatre in Sugar Sand Park.

Sylvia was first produced in 1995 at the Manhattan Theatre Club in New York, and starred Sarah Jessica Parker and Blythe Danner. Called ‘delicious and dizzy’ by the New York Times, the play received Drama Desk Award nominations for Outstanding Play, Outstanding Actress in a Play (Parker), and Outstanding Costume Design.

Sylvia focuses on Greg, a middle-aged businessman disenchanted with his job and somewhat adrift in life, who finds a stray in the park—a dog named Sylvia who absolutely adores him, much to the consternation of his wife Kate. Jacqueline Laggy (Other People’s Money, Chapter Two) will play Sylvia, the energetic lab-poodle mix, and Keith Garsson (Other People’s Money, Chapter Two) and Patti Gardner (The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife) will play Greg and Kate. Mario Betto (The Sisters Rosensweig, playwright – Combing Through Life’s Tangles) will also star.

Genie Croft, who recently helmed the BRTG’s sold out production of Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill, will direct: “I’m delighted to be directing A R Gurney’s intelligent, insightful, hilarious script,” Croft says. “Gurney’s variation on the plot of the married, menopausal male falling in love with an exciting, enticing younger woman, who just happens to be an adorable stray dog, offers keen observations into American life. Yet it is first and foremost a love story, deeply comical and touching, because Sylvia remains a dog with an animal’s instincts and urges.” Croftwas also responsible for guiding the Guild’s successful productions of Neil Simon’s Broadway Bound and Charles Busch’s The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife.

The Boca Raton Theatre Guild is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to producing professional productions and advancing the art of theatre in the South Florida community.

Sylvia will run from September 28^th through October 14^th at the Willow Theatre in Sugar Sand Park.
