Avenue Q has been called the ‘funniest dirty musical’ or ‘the dirtiest funny musical’ ever. Written by Jeff Marx and Robert Lopez (The Book of Mormon, Frozen) the Tony Award-winning show is a clever and irreverent look at the world through the eyes of the residents of Avenue Q as they explore and address the issues associated with growing up in the ‘real’ world, rather than the one their parents – and Sesame Street – described to them. Using a unique combination of humans and puppets, the musical chronicles its characters’ struggles to find decent jobs, stable relationships, and their purpose in life.

Entr’Acte Theatrix will present Avenue Q at the Delray Beach Center for the Arts (Crest Theater) from June 19 – 29.

“This play is a particularly appropriate one for Entr’Acte Theatrix”, says producer Vicki Halmos. “Our mission is to provide performance opportunities for emerging theatre artists, who – just like the characters they will portray, are taking the ‘next step’ from classroom to career.” Halmos has been involved with Avenue Q almost since its inception. She was an original investor in the Broadway, London, and Las Vegas productions, as well in its current off-Broadway incarnation, and was at the Tony Awards when the show won for Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, and Best Original Score ten years ago.

Avenue Q’s director Darrick Penny, has just graduated with an MFA from Florida Atlantic University. He recently directed The Fantasticks, and starred as Sir Robin in Entr’Acte’s 2013 production of Monty Python’s Spamalot.

Entr’Acte’s company of actors are all seriously pursuing careers in theatre or the arts, and a number of them have already appeared on area stages. Cast members Christian Ortega (Princeton), Sahid Arnaud-Pabon (Nicky), and Luis Herrera (Rod, Bad Idea Bear) are students at The New World School of the Arts; Seth Trucks (Trekkie) is a graduate of London’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (his father is Butch Trucks, drummer for the Allman Brothers Band); and Joanna Mandel (Kate Monster) appeared in Entr’Acte’s productions of Hair and Cabaret. The rest of the cast includes Greg Halmos (Brian), Elaine Flores (Christmas Eve), Kalli Courakos (Lucy the Slut), Samantha Streich (Mrs. Thistletwat, Bad Idea Bear), and Chasity Hart (Gary Coleman).

All the cast members attended a two week puppet ‘boot camp’ in order to learn the intricacies of manipulating, Princeton 1singing, and dancing with their puppet counterparts.  (Click HERE to see a short video of an Avenue Q cast performing La  Macarena) Musical numbers include: “What do you do with a B.A. in English?”, “It Sucks to Be Me”, “If You Were Gay”, “Everyone’s a Little Bit Racist”, and “The Internet is for Porn”.

Avenue Q will run from June 19th through June 29th only, at the Crest Theatre at the Delray Beach Center for the Arts at Old School Square. The theatre is located at 51 North Swinton Avenue, Delray Beach, 33444. Tickets are on sale now, and are available by calling 561-243-7922. Avenue Q has adult themes, and ‘full-frontal puppet nudity’, so parents are advised that this production may not be suitable for young children.

It’s that time of year again. School’s almost out and summer is closing in. What better time to celebrate the season than with a musical comedy based on Allan Sherman’s clever parodies of classic and classical music. Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah will open at the Broward Stage Door Theatre on May 30th, and run through July 6th.

Sherman’s song parodies have been woven into a musical comedy tracing the trajectory of the lives of Barry Bockman and his true love, Sarah Jackman. From birth, to early education, to the infamous Camp Granada; from marriage and suburbia (and the shopping mall), to retirement in Florida, each musical number in Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah displays Sherman’s gift for capturing character and culture, and his unique take on – and understanding of – human nature. Songs include “Harvey and Sheila” (sung to the tune of “Hava Nagila”), “Glory, Glory Harry Lewis” (“The Battle Hymn of the Republic”) “Sarah Jackman” (“Frere Jacques”), and of course, the title song, set to the music of the 1876 opera, Dance of the Hours.

Producer Derelle Bunn and director Dan Kelley have cast Shane Tanner, James Parks, Ryan Halsaver, Eva Marie Mastrangelo, and Sarah Sirota in the production.

“Hello Muddah is a huge show,” says Kelley. “Our five actors play over 40 characters. And when they are not on stage singing one of Alan Sherman’s iconic songs they are in the wings executing over 60 costume and wig changes. Even the live onstage band gets into the act during the act one finale – becoming Noah and the Noodniks. I’m excited to be working with musical director Dave Nagy and costume designer Colleen O’Connell and a talented cast of five fearless musical comedy chameleons.”

Allan Sherman’s first album My Son, The Folk Singer, released in 1962 became the fastest-selling record album up to the time. He released eight albums in total. “Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah” was his biggest hit single. Sherman was the co-creator of the hit television program I’ve Got a Secret, as well as several other short-lived game shows. He died in November 1973 at the age of 49.

The Tony Award-winning Broadway hit comes to Boca Raton!
Pippin - BlackThe Boca Raton Theatre Guild’s production of Pippin will open on January 24th and run through February 9th at the Willow Theatre in Boca Raton’s Sugar Sand Park.

“Although it’s set in medieval times, Pippin is actually a joyous musical satire of the changing American culture in the early 1970s,” explains the show’s director, Keith Garsson.  “It’s another of Bob Fosse’s classic (yet intimate) shows that proves once again his style has never dated.”

According to musical theatre scholar Scott Miller in his 1996 book, From Assassins to West Side Story, “Pippin is a largely under-appreciated musical with a great deal more substance to it than many people realize…”

“The musical comedy highlights a young man (Mike Westrich recently of Tick, Tick… Boom!) who tries to ‘find himself’”, Garsson continues, “And reflects the baby boomers’ coming of age as they took longer to decide careers, life partners, and children. Guiding Pippin through his various peregrinations is the Leading Player (Cabonell Award-winner Reggie White – fresh from the national tour of Porgy and Bess) who opens the show with the classic number Magic To Do. Pippin features one of the most entertaining and vivacious scores in Broadway history by Stephen Schwartz (Wicked),” Garsson says. “And we’re thrilled to have Carbonell Award-winner Patti Gardner back after her terrific performance in our 2013 season’s production of Chicago, along with Leah Sessa as Katherine, Troy Stanley as King Charlemagne, Conor Walton and Randy Charleville.”

“Pippin was my very first professional show, and it almost did not happen,” says Reggie Whitehead.  I attended the South Eastern Theater Conferences many years ago, and almost missed seeing the director of that particular production.  He spotted me (from my 8×10!) in a hallway and said that he had been waiting to see me.  He had me come to his hotel suite, where I sang for him, a capella, and read for him.  Well, I got the job.

“I love playing the role of the Leading Player,” Whitehead continues, “Because I always find something new in the character and the show.  This is my third time doing this role, and now that I am a little older, with a different outlook on life in general, I suppose some of that life experience will help me shape this incarnation, at this stage of my life.”

Patti Gardner and Mike Westrich are equally excited to be a part of the Boca Raton Theatre Guild’s first 2014 production:

“I’m playing two roles: Fastrada and Berthe,” says Gardner. “Berthe is the role I’ve ALWAYS wanted to play ever since I saw the original production of Pippin in New York. Both women are diametrically opposed in every way…so it’ll be great fun to do that.”

“I’m thrilled to be playing such an amazing role, as I love the score to Pippin,” Westrich says. “I love the interpretive nature of the piece and I can’t wait to bring a new Pippin to the stage”

The Broward Stage Door Theatre will present the regional premiere of 9 to 5: The Musical from December 13th through January 19th.   Based on the 1980 hit movie starring Dolly Parton, the show features Parton’s original award-winning title song, as well as her Tony Award and Grammy-nominated score.  Outrageous, thought-provoking, and even a little romantic, 9 to 5: The Musical is a story of friendship, revenge, teaming up, and taking care of business!

Set in the ‘boys club’ workplace jungle of the ‘Mad Men’ era, the musical tells the tale of three dynamic – and very different – women, who conspire together to take control of their company –  and their lives, and learn there’s absolutely nothing they can’t do – even in a so-called ‘man’s world’.

Dan Kelley is extremely pleased to have been selected to direct the show: “Like many people of a certain age I was obsessed with the movie 9 to 5,” he says. ”When it was turned into a Broadway musical  I went to see it expecting the worst and left the theatre actually loving it. It stays true to the movie and adds some great songs by Dolly Parton. And,” he adds, “It’s proving to be the biggest seller of Stage Door’s season so far.”

Kelley and Stage Door’s Executive Producer/Artistic Director Derelle Bunn have assembled an excellent team to bring 9 to 5: The Musical to the popular theatre’s stage.   Carbonell Award-winners Chrissi Ardito and David Nagy will choreograph and musical direct the show.  “We have some familiar faces, and some exciting newcomers,” says Kelley.   “Katie Angel will be playing Violet (the Lily Tomlin role), Jennifer Hope will play Judy (the Jane Fonda role) and Jessica Crilley will be filling some big…shoes…as Doralee (the Dolly Parton role). Local favorite and Carbonell nominated actor Shane Tanner will play the villainous boss Franklyn Hart, and we are also pleased to have Cindy Pearce, Shenise Nunez, Elizabeth Sackett, Courtney Blackmun , Kari Grunberg, Christopher Herr, Andrew Schultz, Clint Hromsco, Marcus Davis, Bobby Underwood and Evan Mayer in this wonderful cast.

Neil Simon, Marvin Hamlisch and Carole Bayer Sager’s collaboration is a delightful tale of love, comedy, and music

It is said that opposites attract.  Pair a somewhat up-tight classically trained musician with a young lyricist who’s a little bit more than ‘out there’, and sparks just might fly.  Add a script by comedy master Neil Simon to the mix, stir in music by Marvin Hamlisch and lyrics by Carole Bayer-Sager and musical theatre magic is bound to occur.

Carbonell Award winners Margot Moreland and Oscar Cheda will star in the Boca Raton Theatre Guild’s production of They’re Playing Our Song at the Willow Theatre in Sugar Sand Park.  The show will run from November 8th through November 24th.  The two will portray Vernon Gersch and Sonia Walsk, the fictional counterparts to Hamlisch and Bayer-Sager whose real-life romance served as the inspiration for the musical. Margot---Oscar

“They’re Playing Our Song was an enormous hit when it played on Broadway,” says BRTG Artistic Director Keith Garsson. “It ran almost three years. The script and score still resonate with great music and very funny dialogue. And the theme of the show – that can two people can maintain both a personal and professional relationship with some sacrifice and compromise – offers an extremely entertaining two hours.

“They’re Playing Our Song was one of the last personal musicals,” Garsson explains.  It was the era of shows like Dreamgirls and Falsettoland. Soon afterwards, Broadway gave way to another “British invasion” with productions like Phantom of the Opera and Les Miz. Since then, spectacles have become the new normal.”

“We have a terrific team in place for this show,” Garsson (who will also direct the show) continues.  “Caryl Fantel is our musical director, and Ron Hutchins will choreograph both Song and our upcoming production of Pippin.  They’re Playing Our Song is a terrific fit for us in that it hasn’t been done often.  And it continues the BRTG’s tradition of producing musicals from the sixties and seventies – a time a lot of us remember fondly.”

They’re Playing Our Song will run from November 8th through November 24th at the Willow Theatre in Sugar Sand Park.  The theatre is located at 300 South Military Trail in Boca Raton, just south of Palmetto Park Road. Performances are Wednesday through Saturday at 8 pm, and Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays at 2 pm. Tickets are $35, and are on sale now.          Season Tickets Now Available for Four Exciting Productions.

The award-winning Women’s Theatre Project and the Boca Raton Theatre Guild have joined forces and are offering patrons the opportunity to purchase subscriptions to their productions next season.  For a total of $99, patrons will be able to attend four plays – two musicals produced by the Boca Raton Theatre Guild, and two plays presented by the Women’s Theatre Project.

Both the BRTG and TWTP operate out of the Willow Theatre at Sugar Sand Park in Boca Raton, and both companies have noted an increase in interest about the others’ productions by theatre-goers since the Women’s Theatre Project moved into the Willow to the last season.  Willow logoThe fit is a natural one, says BRTG Artistic Director Keith Garsson: “By offering to combine our four shows into one package, Sugar Sand Park has enabled theatre goers to enjoy a wide range of productions from classics to edgy new comedies. We will still be able to maintain our level of professionalism, yet we hope to reach out to a wider fan-base and encourage more cross-over between audiences loyal to both companies before The Women’s Theatre Project moved here from Fort Lauderdale.”

Genie Croft, Artistic Director of the Women’s Theatre Project agrees:   “This is another big move for us, especially since our original move last season to the Willow – and a part of our continuing growth,” she explains.  “This partnership with The Boca Raton Theatre Guild allows both companies to offer an exciting season of outstanding plays and musicals to our patrons at a very affordable price.  And it’s an extraordinary opportunity to showcase and highlight some of Florida’s best talent in drama, comedy, and musical theatre. It’s a perfect combination!”

The plays and musicals that will make up the two companies combined season are They’re Playing Our Song, the south eastern premier of Nicky Silver’s The Lyons, the current Broadway hit Pippin, and Red Hot Patriot: The Kickass Wit of Molly Ivins.  Details about each production are below.

Entr’Acte Theatrix has teamed with the Intertainment Network’s popular W4CY Internet Radio to bring 2012 The Voice finalist Michaela Paige to the Delray Beach Centre for the Arts’ Crest Theatre.  Paige will participate in a live remote broadcast leading up to Saturday evening June 22nd performance of Monty Python’s Spamalot.

MP BSPaige is currently in Los Angeles for The Voice finale, and will fly home especially for the Entr’Acte/Spamalot appearance.  The young singer, a Boca Raton native, was a popular contestant on last year’s show, and her coach, country mega-star Blake Shelton, predicted a great future for her on the evening of her eventual elimination:

“I love this little girl so much and it’s just the … this is her first stab at this thing, and she’s going to be a star.” Shelton said. “You’re going to see her many times. In true Pythonesque fashion, they have ventured out onto the streets of Delray Beach Grail---web…and beyond (wearing Spamalot tee-shirts), and have hidden away in various locations –   obvious and not so – several modern facsimiles of the objective of King Arthur’s quest –  yes… Grails!

Anyone who finds one of Arthur’s coveted cups will automatically win two tickets to the Spamalot performance of their choice. The production will run at the Delray Beach Center for the Arts/Crest Theatre from June 20th – 30th.

There are a number of these chalices to be chased – they could be anywhere.

Entr’Acte Theatrix will present Monty Python’s Spamalot from June 20th through the 30th at the Crest Theatre at the Delray Center for the Arts.  The play is “lovingly ripped off” from the 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail, with a book by Python Eric Idle, and a score by Idle and John Du Prez. Like the film, it’s a totally irreverent and typically Pythonesque parody of the Arthurian Legend:

The legendary King Arthur, accompanied by his faithful servant, Patsy, travels through his kingdom, collecting members for his Knights of the Round Table.  Some of his recruits include Sir Robin, a collector of plague victims, and Lance a ‘large, handsome, and incredibly violent man’, who agree to join him – Lance ‘for the fighting’, and Robin for ‘the singing and dancing’.  The Lady of the Lake (and her Laker Girls), Sir Bedevere, and Sir Dennis Galahad eventually join Arthur in his search for The Holy Grail. The show also features a bevy of beautiful girls (of course), not to mention ‘cows, killer rabbits, and French people’.  As The Sunday Times observed, Monty Python’s Spamalot ‘raises silliness to an art form’.

John_CostanzoEntr’Acte Theatrix has assembled a talented cast to populate the surreal world of Python.  The suitably kingly John Costanzo (left) will take on the role of Arthur; Sharyn Peoples will play The Lady of the Lake; and Carbonell nominee Mike Westrich (right) will don Mike W HeadshotSir Galahad’s armor. Other cast members include Darrick Penny as Sir Robin, and Mike James as Sir Bedevere.

“Spamalot is one of the most cleverly written comedies of Broadway’s recent history,” says the show’s director Kevin Black. “I have always wanted to direct Spamalot and I’m so happy to finally have the chance.” We have assembled a very talented cast,” he continues, “Including Mike Westrich and the amazing Sharyn Peoples as The Lady of the Lake. Every rehearsal is a barrel of laughs; we are all having so much fun. I have no doubt that fans of Monty Python, and even those who have never seen this iconic British humor, will have a blast at the show.”

When asked for a comment about the show, Spamalot’s musical director Roger Blankenship is equally enthusiastic:  “The music is fun to sing, and to hear – and this cast is definitely up to it!”

The Boca Raton Theatre Guild to Produce
Two Musicals for its 2013-2014 Season

The Boca Raton Theatre Guild has chosen to produce two acclaimed musicals for their 2013-2014 season.  The commercial and critical success of their recent production of Chicago was one of the key factors inspiring the change.  In the past their seasons have consisted of one musical and one straight play.

The BRTG season will open with They’re Playing Our Song, the Neil Simon/Marvin Hamlisch disco era musical, and will conclude with the Stephen Schwartz, Bob Fosse, Roger O. Hirson 1972 classic Pippin.

Producer/director Keith Garsson explains the Guild’s decision: “The recent loss of composer Marvin Hamlisch led us to re-examine his unique body of work to see which shows have been overlooked. It didn’t take long to come across They’re Playing Our Song and realize that its energetic disco score, New York setting and funny script by Neil Simon was a terrific choice to insert into the spot usually reserved for our straight play.”

 They’re Playing Our Song will star Carbonell Award winners Margot Moreland and Oscar Cheda as fictional counterparts to the real-life romance between Hamlisch and lyricist Carol Bayer-Sager. Ms. Moreland recently wowed Theatre Guild audiences in her critically acclaimed performance of last year’s Sweet Charity and Mr. Cheda, has just completed a run in the critically acclaimed production of In the Heights at Actor’s Playhouse. Caryl Fantel will serve as musical director for the production.

The season will conclude with the Guild’s traditional ‘big’ musical.  According to musical theatre scholar Scott Miller in his 1996 book, From Assassins to West Side Story, “Pippin is a largely under-appreciated musical with a great deal more substance to it than many people realize…”  Currently enjoying an extremely successful revival on Broadway, Pippin uses the premise of a mysterious performance troupe, led by a Leading Player, to tell the story of a young prince and his search for meaning and significance.

Says producer Garsson: “Pippin features a collection of dance-in the-aisles tunes.  It ran for years on Broadway, beginning in 1972.  Of course that was over forty years ago… expect some innovations!”

 “And,” Garsson continues, “We’re really pleased Ron Hutchins, who created all that brilliant choreography in Chicago will be joining us for both shows this season as we continue to grow our productions as our audience demands!”

The Boca Raton Theatre Guild is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to producing professional productions and advancing the art of theatre in the South Florida community.

All performances will take place in the Willow Theatre in Sugar Sand Park.  The theatre is located at 300 South Military Trail in Boca Raton, just south of Palmetto Park Road.
