MARGATE, FL: Frederick Knott’s Dial M for Murder is a psychological thriller – a character driven, carefully plotted, ‘cat-and mouse’ piece of theatre that is as contemporary now as it was when it first premiered on BBC television in 1952. Stage Door Theatre’s production of Dial M for Murder will open on October 30^th, and run through December 6^th.

Best known as a classic Alfred Hitchcock film, this ‘noir’ thriller was performed in London’s West End and on Broadway several years before Hitchcock adapted it for the screen. The play centers around former tennis star Tony Wendice and his scheme to have his wealthy wife murdered, after learning she has designated him her heir. Although Wendice’s plans are evident almost from the outset, Knott’s clever plotting and characterizations will keep audiences on the edge of their seats throughout the play.

Dial M for Murder is being directed by Arthur Whitelaw, who, along with the rest of the cast is impressed by the quality of Knott’s script. “It’s so well written,” he says. “Our audiences are in for a treat.”

“I think Dial M For Murder, as a play, is so beautifully crafted,” says actor Jason Plourde, who has been cast as Tony Wendice in the production. “As a classically trained singer with an operatic background, I’m accustomed to the use of melody and lyricism as tools to impart the drama of a show. I think the text in this play is very lyrical and almost musical in its cadence. The use of language is so lush that it’s an absolute delight to say these words. And also, it’s just always so much fun to play the villain, especially when it is in the guise of someone as cool and confident as Tony.”

Larry Bramble agrees: “What a gift to be cast as Inspector Hubbard in this theatre classic,” he says. “The script is so well written and with this talented cast, the experience will be one to remember. It’s a real page-turner, as they would say if it were a book.”

Other cast members include Gladys Ramirez as Margot Wendice, Sean Dorazio as Lesgate, Roy Lynam as Max Halliday, and Jose-Luiz Lopez as Thompson.

Dial M for Murder will run from October 30 – December 6 at The Stage Door Theatre. The theatre is located at 8036 Sample Road, Margate, 33065.

When Dan Kelley met Derelle (Dee) Wilson at an audition for Company for the Ft. Lauderdale Players in 1989 for the first time, Kelley somehow knew they had a future together, says Bunn. “I don’t know who that woman is,” he told his partner, “but I will know her the rest of my life.”

And on October 1^st, 2015 – 27 years later – Dan Kelley took on the official role of Artistic Director at Bunn’s Stage Door Theatre.

Originally known as an actor, Dan Kelley made his debut at the Ruth Foreman Theatre in 1989, and subsequently appeared “on every South Florida regional stage for the next ten years,” he says. Jack Zink of the Sun-Sentinel wrote “Dan Kelley, possibly the region’s best known song and dance man…”

But in 1998 co-founders of The Broward Stage Door Theatre Dee Wilson Bunn and David Torres asked Kelley to direct his first show – he had never directed before – “so it was a giant leap of faith / crapshoot on their part which seemed to work out because 17 years and over 100 shows later I’m still directing here at Stage Door,” he says. Kelley is proud to be on a very short list – that includes Daivd Arisco and Lou Tyrrell – of individuals who have been nominated for the Carbonell Award as both actor and director.

Some major highlights over the years include – Zaza/Albin in La Cage 2000 ( Carbonell nomination best actor in a musical ), Parade (regional premiere, Carbonell nomination best direction ), The Drowsy Chaperone (winner Silver Palm Award – nominated Carbonell award best actor, direction) , and Neil Simon’s Rumors ( winner best ensemble Carbonell Award).

Kelley takes great satisfaction in looking back at all the careers that he helped start at Stage Door . Actors fresh out of college playing their first roles in the professional arena who have gone on to major Broadway and Regional careers. “As I learned back in 1998, that’s what it’s all about – taking a giant leap of faith/crapshoot on someone and seeing it all work out.”

Derelle Bunn

Derelle Bunn is the Co-founder and Producing Artistic Director of the Stage Door Theatre. She has a life-long career in the performing arts, producing more than 300 productions, and performing as an actress in more than 50 shows from New York to Florida. She graduated with honors from Georgia State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Theater, and a co-major in Theatrical Business Management. She also attended New York University’s Masters Program. She was the Founder and choreographer for the Urban Ballet Company in Atlanta, Georgia., receiving grants from Coca-Cola and winning numerous awards for her work there. She is a two time winner of the prestigious Candler Grant, and received three Governors Honors Awards in recognition for her work as a choreographer. As a singer, she has been a two-time finalist for the NYSTA awards, sponsored by Stephen Sondheim. Stage Door audiences may remember her for performances in Deathtrap, Side By Side By Sondheim, and Prisoner Of 2^nd Avenue. Directing credits at the Stage Door include The Convertible Girl, Star Spangled Girl, and An Evening With Rodgers And Hart.

MARGATE, FL: Promises, Promises, the Burt Bacharach/Hal David/Neil Simon musical was definitely a product of its time when it opened in 1968. And now, with the success of television’s Mad Men, and the popularity of all things ‘retro’, the show is once again a timely piece. Stage Door Theatre will present this multi-award winning musical from September 25^th through November 1^st.

Based on the classic 1960 Billy Wilder film The Apartment, Promises, Promises tells the story of Chuck Baxter, a charming young employee at the Consolidated Life Insurance Company. In an effort to advance at the company, Chuck lends executives his apartment for their extramarital romantic trysts. But things become slightly complicated when Fran Kubelik, the object of Chuck’s affection, becomes the mistress of one of his executives.

Promises, Promises was the only Broadway musical written by Bacharach and David; it is filled with Bacharach’s tricky time signatures, and produced an unusually large number of hit songs, including “A House is Not a Home”, “I’ll Never Fall in Love Again”, “I Say a Little Prayer for You” and the show’s title number, “Promises, Promises”; the cast album won a Grammy award for best cast recording. The script, by Neil Simon, is filled with memorable ‘one-liners’, and although at first glance the story might seem light and inconsequential, the show’s themes – of infidelity, losing one’s moral compass, unrequited love – anchor it in reality.

Michael Leeds will direct the production, Kevin Black has taken on the choreographic duties, and Michael Larsen will provide musical direction.

“This is a show I grew up with,” says Larsen. “I remember when I was 8 years old, my parents came home from seeing the original Broadway production, and oh, how they loved it. It was the hottest ticket in town for three years. We wore out the original cast album listening to this exciting, and for the time, so fresh and forward-looking Burt Bacharach score. I’m honored to have the chance to work with this terrific team and talented cast to present a score that is so deeply personal to me. I hope my love of this music comes shining through in performance!”

Kevin Black agrees: “How can you go wrong with the incredible score of Burt Bacharach combined with the comedic writing of Neil Simon? It’s a true gem that’s rarely produced. We are tremendously excited to bring it to life once again at The Stage Door Theatre,” he says.

Leeds is equally enthusiastic: “Before the TV series Mad Men, there was Promises, Promises,” he says. “Promises, Promises is Mad Men with the incredible music of Burt Bacharach!”

MARGATE, FL: When The Fantasticks opened at the Sullivan Street Playhouse in Greenwich Village on May 3^rd, 1960, no one, least of all its creators, had any idea this simple yet stylistic musical would become the longest lasting production in theatrical history, running in its original incarnation for 42 years, and 17,162 performances.

Described as a “funny and romantic musical about a boy, a girl, two fathers and a wall, the play’s narrator, El Gallo, asks the audience to use their imagination and follow him into a world of moonlight and magic. The boy and the girl fall in love, grow apart, and finally find their way back to each other after realizing the truth in El Gallo’s words that “without a hurt, the heart is hollow”.”

The book and lyrics by Tom Jones and music by Harvey Schmidt include Try to Remember, They Were You, and Soon It’s Gonna Rain, and have become as timeless as the story itself. The musical is based loosely on several literary classics including The Romancers (Les Romanesques) by Edmond Rostand, which draws elements from the story of Pyramus and Thisbe, Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore.

“The Fantasticks is the longest running show in the history of the American theatre,” says director Dan Kelley. “Among the thousands of actors who have performed in The Fantasticks are: Anna Maria Alberghetti, Richard Chamberlain, Elliot Gould, Bert Lahr, Liza Minnelli, Jerry Orbach, F. Murray Abraham, and Glenn Close. I have a wonderful cast including some familiar faces as well as some exciting newcomers,” he continues. “Making their Stage Door debut will be Alexander Zenoz as Matt, Steve Goldstein as Bellomy, Sebastian Lombardo as Mortimer, Alan Gerstel as Henry, and Pedro Kaawaloa as El Gallo. And returning to our stage will be Molly Anne Ross as Luisa, Pierre Tannous as The Mute, and Larry Bramble as Hucklebee.”

David Nagy

“The Fantasticks has always been one of my favorite shows,” production’s musical director David Nagy explains. “I’m old enough that, when I was first getting involved in musical theater, it was a relatively new show. I think the score has some of the most beautiful songs ever written for the theater, and there’s a timeless element to the script. Although I have seldom done the same show more than once, The Fantasticks is one of the few shows I don’t mind doing over and over. Through the years, I’ve gotten to meet several individuals from the 1960 production: Rita Gardner, the original Luisa; Julian Stein, the original music director; and Jones and Schmidt themselves. It was always a thrill to meet these people who were part of a show that was so important to me growing up.

“One of the first times I was ever on stage was in a revue, dancing to the song “They Were You” which is sung at the end of the show, Nagy continues. “I can’t remember my dancing partner’s name, but I remember her nickname was “Peanut”. So to Peanut, wherever you are: this one’s for you!”

Comedy Central/National Lampoon star Tommy Koenig’s Baby Boom Baby has been called wildly entertaining, touching, and very, very funny! It has also been called well-written, high energy and invigorating. Koenig will bring his one man “‘musicomedy’- a flashback through our times and the music that defined them” to the Palm Beaches theatre from April 28^th through May 15^th.

Baby Boom Baby is Koenig’s story, told from his distinctly Baby Boomer perspective. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1953, the year Rock and Roll was born. The son of a musician who played with Glenn Miller during WW2, Koenig was greatly influenced by chance meetings with John F. Kennedy and later George Carlin, and mostly by what the Beatles brought – the influence of music on Boomers’ culture and personal choices. In Baby Boom Baby Koenig recounts the years he struggled to keep up with the changing times, just missing Woodstock by a few miles; the rites of passage of College, Travel, Sex and Drugs; and the ever changing cultural and political landscape that music unleashed as it morphed from Disco to Punk to MTV to Rap and beyond.

MARGATE, FL: Stage Door Theatre will exercise the considerable musical and comedic abilities of a talented cast when it presents WaistWatchers The Musical! from July 10^th through September 6^th.

Although the show, set in Cook’s Women’s Gym, takes a lighthearted look at four adult women dealing with assorted body image issues, it covers topics such as dieting exercise, plastic surgery, and sex over the age of forty – areas of concern to women, and to men – of all ages.

Playwright Alan Jacobson has rewritten the lyrics of popular songs to suit the subject, and some of his cleverly appropriate numbers include “Botox Queen” to the tune of ABBA’s “Dancing Queen”, “I Hope I Lose It” to the tune of “I Hope I Get It” from A Chorus Line, “Viagra” to the tune of “Maria” from West Side Story, and “I Feel My Butt Squeeze” to the tune of Carole King’s “I Feel The Earth Move.”

“When I first wrote WaistWatchers The Musical! I was looking to create a fun show that people of all ages, backgrounds, and lifestyles could enjoy,” Jacobson explains. “I couldn’t think of anything more universal and topical than food. I truly don’t know anyone who doesn’t eat it! And people sure talk about and obsess over it. What has given me the greatest satisfaction is seeing how people respond to the show,” he says, “Not only with laughter and pleasure, but how so many people identify with the struggles, and are inspired to lead healthier lives. And to me, that is what theater is all about.”

“To make this show work you need to find four terrific triple threat performers and I found them,” says WaistWatcher’s director, Dan Kelley. “Katie Angell who is a Broadway World nominee for best actress in Nine To Five, Shenise Nunez (A Chorus Line, I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change, Nine To Five, Sophisticated Ladies) will be joined by Angela Thomas and Stephanie Genovese both of whom are making their Stage Door debuts. This show is very cleverly written and it will delight our audiences,” he continues: “Be prepared to laugh off a few pounds and celebrate the power. May 26, 2015 MARGATE, FL: They sold over 75 million records, nine of them gold. They had more Top Ten hits than the Beatles or Elvis. Until the advent of The Supremes, The Andrews Sisters – Patty, Maxene, and Laverne – were the most imitated of all female singing groups; they are still one of the best-selling female vocal groups of all time. Sisters of Swing (A Tribute to the Andrews Sisters), which will run from June 5^th through July 12^th at the Stage Door Theatre, details the fascinating journey of these three sisters from their early days in vaudeville through their success in ‘the big time’. Sisters of Swing follows Patty, Maxene, and Laverne through their sometimes stormy personal relationships, their career, as well as several entertaining interactions with other celebrities of their era, including Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye. The show’s musical numbers include “Don’t Sit Under the Apple Tree”, “Three Little Fishies”, “Beer Barrel Polka”, Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive”, and of course, “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy”. The Andrews Sisters’ songbook is extensive, many of their songs instantly recognizable even almost 80 years after their first big ‘hit’ “Bei Mir Bist Du Schon” was released in 1937. Their music continues to influence major artists – Bette Midler and Christina Aguilera are two modern day singers who have channeled The Andrews Sisters at various points in their careers. Elvis Presley, Barry Manilow, Mel Tormé, The Pointer Sisters, The McGuire Sisters, and The Manhattan Transfer are among the many others who have been inspired by the sisters’ close harmonies, rhythms, and perfectly pitched tones.

“My father was in the air force in World War II,” explains the shows director, Dan Kelley. “He spent time in a German POW camp, so this era and these songs were very much a part of my early years – sitting around the record player and listening to my father’s stories and the Andrews Sisters,” he continues. “In fact, I think my Father had a little crush on Maxene! So this show really resonates with me.” Kelley has cast Malia Nicolini as Laverne and Molly Anne Ross as Patty. Both actresses are newcomers to Stage Door Theatre. Sara Ashley Teate, who was in last year’s Stage Door hit What’s New Pussycat will play Maxene. Brad Rakushin, recently seen in the theatre’s production of I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change, rounds out the cast. Musical direction (and piano) is by Michael Larsen, with Julie Jacbos on drums and Martha Spangler on bass. Set design is by Sean McClelland, and lighting design by Ardean Landhuis.

MARGATE, FL: Gillian Holroyd is a witch. She can cast spells and perform feats of magic, but she can’t fall in love. And when she casts a spell over her attractive neighbor – partly to keep him away from an old rival, and partly because she is attracted to him – this slight ‘imperfection’ leads to a number of unintended and somewhat tricky situations. Although when John Van Druten’s supernatural hit, Bell, Book and Candle debuted on Broadway in 1951 it was billed as – and thought of as a light comedy, it delivers a message that is still relevant today. The play touches on the importance of appearances, on the dynamics of a close circle of friends, on pretending and secrets, and on passing as something one is not. Bell, Book and Candle will open at Stage Door Theatre on May 15^th, and run through June 21^st.

“I have loved Bell, Book and Candle ever since I saw the Jimmy Stewart/Kim Novak film as a kid,” says the show’s director Michael Leeds. “The magic, the romance, and the hysterical performances by Jack Lemmon, Ernie Kovacs and Elsa Lanchester are indelibly etched in my mind. Then – when I recently read the play, I saw how much more there was to explore; this wonderful journey of two people breaking out of their shells, stepping out of their comfort zone to fall in love.”

Leeds is extremely pleased with his cast for the production: “For the leads, I cast two fine actors from New York, Nicholas Wilder and Melissa Herion,” he explains. “And I was lucky to get three terrific local actors. South Florida theatre goers are well acquainted with the enormously talented Ken Clement and Janet Weakley, and we’re introducing a young actor, Thomas Karner, who more than fills Jack Lemmon’s shoes. With those performances and the magic we’re creating on stage – literally! – our audiences are in for a great time!”

A Timeless Classic comes to Stage Door Theatre

Margate, FL: Stage Door Theatre will follow up their hit production of Cabaret with another classic musical. Their production of A Chorus Line will open April 8^th and run through May 17^th.

One of the longest running shows of all time, A Chorus Line evolved from several workshop sessions with Broadway dancers (known as ‘gypsies’) taped by choreographer Tony Stevens. The dancers’ frank discussions, admissions, and often painful revelations about their experiences, hopes, and dreams formed the basis of the play, which is set on a bare stage of an anonymous Broadway theatre during auditions for an upcoming musical. A Chorus Line provides a window to a backstage world most theatre patrons have no idea exists.

Initially directed and choreographed by the legendary Michael Bennett, A Chorus Line was a critical and box office hit; it received twelve Tony Award nominations, and won nine. It also was awarded the 1976 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. And a number of composer Marvin Hamlisch’s songs, including ‘What I Did for Love’, and ‘One’, became ‘pop’ as well as Broadway standards.

“I was 12. I had just starting taking dance classes,” explains the show’s director/choreographer Kevin Black. “My parents bought us tickets to a touring production of a show I had never heard of…A Chorus Line. As soon as I heard “5,6,7,8” and the lights revealed a stage full of dancers, well, I was mesmerized. This was me, this was my life. Nine years later I had the privilege of playing Mark for Jean Ann Ryan Productions, even if only as a two week replacement. And thus ends my Chorus Line story…until now. When Dee Bunn asked me if I’d like to direct A Chorus Line, I jumped on the chance. How could I not? This was my opportunity to revisit and old friend and it’s been very nice to become reacquainted.

“When I was offered the project my first immediate thought was “How could I possibly do this better than Michael Bennett?” he continues. “Well the answer was a resounding “I can’t!”. His brilliant staging, patterns, moods and even that iconic choreography were flawless. So, rather than reinvent the wheel, I decided to spruce it up a bit, put some of my touches on it and let this brilliant piece of theatre speak for itself. And just like an old friend that you haven’t seen in years, the reunion has been nothing short of fantastic.”

Black has assembled a talented cast to populate the Stage Door ‘line’:

Ronen Bay, fresh off his critically praised role as the Emcee in Stage Door’s recent production of Cabaret says: “I’m thrilled to have had the privilege to perform this spectacular show now twice – and what a beautiful show it is. It has so much heart – it’s not only the amount of talent on the stage, but the realness of it all. Shenise Nunez, who was recently seen in Stage Door’s hit I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change will play Diana Morales in the show agrees: “This show has so much heart,” she says. “It’s not only the amount of talent on the stage, but the realness of it all. The auditioning process, the competition, the heartaches, and that glorious moment when you book a show. It’s all there. I’ve played Maggie in this show, and having a chance to play Diana… It’s all I could have ever dreamed of. Diana’s character is talented, smart, tough, and stubborn, but she has one of the biggest hearts on the line.”

Other cast members include Brooke Martino as Sheila, Andy Fiacco as Zach, John Dempsey as Bobby, Hugo E. Moreno as Larry, Kayley Stevens as Cassie, Emily Tarallo as Lois, Mike Wallace as Frank, Kara Krichman as Val, Alexandra Dow as Vicki, and Keagan Tanner Cerny as Mark. Chrissi Ardito will work with Kevin Black on the choreography.

A Chorus Line will run from April 8 – May 17 at Stage Door Theatre in Margate. The theatre is located at 8036 Sample Road, in Coral Springs.

Cohan Tonight! an entertaining and energetic one-man musical based on the life and career of one of America’s most beloved song and dance men. The play captures the essence of the man, his music, and an era of show business and of Broadway that has rarely been matched. The production will run through April 26^th.

Peterson, who has been called ‘a song-and-dance man with a flair’, has received consistently rave reviews everywhere he has performed the show. He expertly and captivatingly channels the passionate, charismatic, and incredibly talented Cohan in 95 fast-moving minutes. Peterson, a native of the UK, has had an extensive career in dance, and in musical comedy. He has performed in numerous productions, including Cats, 42^nd Street, A Chorus Line, The Sound of Music, Dames at Sea, and Sophisticated Ladies. George M. Cohan Tonight! was conceived and directed by Chip Deffaa, and earned Jon Peterson a Drama Desk nomination, and Deffaa an IRNE Award (Independent Reviewers of New England). Deffaa has created six different musicals about George M. Cohan, for variously sized casts and audiences.

George M. Cohan – who in the years before World War I was known as “the man who owned Broadway”, was an entertainer, playwright, lyricist, actor, singer, dancer, and producer. He wrote more than 50 shows, and hundreds of songs, including such iconic pieces as ‘Give My Regards to Broadway’, ‘Harrigan’, ‘You’re a Grand Old Flag’, ‘I’m a Yankee Doodle Dandy’, and ‘Forty Five Minutes From Broadway’.
