WILTON MANORS, FL: Evening Star Productions, in partnership with Infinite Abyss will present Richard O’Brien’s The Rocky Horror Show at The Abyss Stage from May 12^th through May 28^th. Evening Star Productions’ Rosalie Grant, and Abyss Stage’s Erynn Dalton will share the directing duties along with Chris Bare as Film Director.

The Rocky Horror Show is an outrageous assemblage of – and humorous tribute to – the most stereotypical science fiction and horror movies, Marvel comics, Frankie Avalon/Annette Funicello outings and rock ‘n’ roll of every vintage. The play (upon which the classic film The Rocky Horror Picture Show is based) has grown from an experimental production originally produced in a small London theatre in June 1973, to a cult phenomenon with fans world-wide. The musical tells the story of a newly engaged couple who, when caught in a storm, find refuge in the home of a decidedly unusual scientist who is madly working towards unveiling his latest and greatest creation.

“Directors tend to create their bucket lists a long way away from their end years … in my case I started creating mine before I even started directing! and yes The Rocky Horror Show has been on that list since I was, ahem!, younger, and inching its way to the top of my list over the last several years,” explains the show’s director, Rosalie Grant. “After my recent collaborations with Erynn Dalton and Infinite Abyss I realized the time was ripe for us to collaborate on arguably one of the most iconic musicals ever written. It’s a challenge to direct a cult classic, think outside of the traditional to conceptually reinvent and reimagine, while still staying true to the original to satisfy the diehard Rocky Horror fans. Time travel plays prominently in the plot … so what better way to travel through time than the steampunk culture?! We’re excited to bring South Florida a Rocky Horror reborn from tradition and born from the potential of the future.”

Erynn Dalton recalls. “I was six years old and my sixteen-year old sister had somehow convinced my mother that bringing her little sister (dressed as Magenta, no less) to the midnight showing of The Rocky Horror Picture Show was a good idea. As I watched the movie, I didn’t know why a man was wearing women’s underwear and I didn’t care – all I knew was that I loved the costumes, music and the horror elements (I was already a die-hard horror fan at that age).

“Now, many years later, I’m so excited to be able to put my own personal stamp on such an iconic show, along with the uber-talented Rosalie Grant and Evening Star Productions. In its shows, Infinite Abyss Productions explores the dark side of human nature, and Rocky Horror will be no different as we stray from the “traditional” look and feel of the show into more edgy, sinister territory. As with most Abyss productions, we’ll be using our filmmaking talents to blend filmed elements into the show, intersecting and paying respect to both the Rocky Horror film and play. It will be different from any other Rocky Horror Show, and for that, I am very proud!”

The Rocky Horror Show is also the quintessential audience participation show, and Evening Star will provide Rocky Prop Bags (which will include such ‘must have’ items as a squirt gun, playing cards, and newspaper) for a nominal price. The producers have also created The Warped VIP Package which will include the Prop Bags, front row seating, and the opportunity to join the cast on stage to dance the Time Warp at the conclusion of the performance.

Grant and Dalton have assembled a talented cast to occupy Dr. Frank N. Furter’s home-sweet-castle including Stephen Michael Kennedy (Brad), Erynn Dalton (Janet), Dominick J. Daniel (Frank N Furter), Taurean DeVoe (Rocky), Seth Trucks (Narrator), Cindy Thagard (Usherette/Magenta), Christian Cooper (Riff Raff), Ireland Glennon (Columbia) Eytan Deray (Eddie), Greg Ward (Dr. Scott), and Robyn Brenner, Gracie Connell, Daryl Fortson, and Robert Moore (Phantoms).

The Rocky Horror Show will run from May 12 – 28 at The Abyss Stage in Wilton Manors. Tickets are $35, $45 for The Warped VIP Package (limited availability), and $15 for students. BOCA RATON, FL: Evening Star Productions will present Peter Gordon’s comedic send-up of classic ‘whodounnits’, Murdered to Death, from April 14^th through May 1^st at Sol Theatre in Boca Raton. (There will be a preview performance on April 14th)

Gordon’s spoof – which has been described as ‘deliciously wicked’ and ‘hilarious and very clever’ – has created a cast of stereotypical Agatha Christie-like characters: Bunting the butler; an English Colonel with the prerequisite stiff upper lip; a shady French art dealer and his moll; bumbling local inspectors; and a well-meaning local sleuth who seems to attract murder wherever she goes. They’re all caught up in the side-splitting antics which follow the mysterious death of the owner of a country manor house.

“My love affair with British comedy goes back to watching Benny Hill with my grandparents up through Monty Python and Fawlty Towers,” Grant explains. “I first read the Peter Gordon “Death” series and fell absolutely in love with Inspector Pratt (inspired by the character Inspector Clouseau). So I brought a group of local actor friends together one evening to hear Murdered to Death read, and when it took us over 3 hours to get through the read due to our laughter I knew Evening Star had to stage it. I am thrilled to have an outstanding cast to bring Murdered to Death to life as a regional premiere!”

Cast in Murdered to Death are Lito Becerra (Constable Thompkins), Jim Gibbons (Bunting, the Butler), Murphy Hayes (Colonel Charles Craddock), Fern Katz (Joan Maple), Kitt Marsh (Margaret Craddock), Christopher Mitchell (Pierre Marceau), Amanda Ortega (Dorothy), Phyllis Spear (Mildred), Renee Elizabeth Turner (Elizabeth Hartley-Trumpington), and Seth Trucks (Inspector Pratt).

With over 1400 professional and amateur productions world-wide, Peter Gordon is one of the UK’s most popular playwrights. To date, he has written twelve comedies, a psychological thriller and a one act comedy. Of his modern comedies, it has been said that “Peter Gordon writes about life. Sometimes it is bizarre and funny, sometimes it is sad, but it is always entertaining”.

Two popular Boca Raton theatre companies will offer audiences and actors of all ages an exciting mix of theatre

BOCA RATON, FL: Although Evening Star Productions and Sol Children Theatre are just a bit more than midway through their third and fourteenth seasons, both companies – under the direction of founder and Artistic Director Rosalie Grant are deep into preparation for next years’ productions.

Evening Star Productions 2016-2017 season will begin with Gutenberg! The Musical! (September 15 – October 2, 2016), continue with See Rock City and Other Destinations (January 12 – 29, 2017), and conclude with Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot (April 20 – May 7, 2017).

Sol Children Theatre will present Charles Dickens’ The Christmas Carol (adapted from the classic by Brian Way) (December 2 – 18, 2016), Once on this Island (June 9 – 25, 2017), and Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, adapted by Seth Trucks (August 11 – 27).

“With Evening Star entering its fourth season and Sol Children it’s fifteenth, I found myself reevaluating who we are as a theatre company,” Grant explains. “Who do we serve on stage and in our seats, and what sort of theatre should we continue and/or begin to dish out? I started by re-reading every critical review we’ve received to gather those opinions, and compare notes with our patrons’ comments. I then took into consideration the very specific, not-easily-ignored logistics of our theatre, and finally added our Mission Statement as the umbrella everything must fall under. A concept formed, and from that concept our next season was born. Evening Star’s 2016-17 season consists of a regional premiere, an absurdist classic, challenging roles, small casts and brave directors. Sol Children’s season gets as many children and local adults on stage as possible in family-friendly beloved stories under skillful direction. Putting the two companies’ seasons together we’re giving local actors and our patrons an eclectic fair of three musicals and three straight plays – from contemporary to classic to absurd to fantasy. So my job as artistic director is done for now, and my wonderfully talented directors are waiting in the wings!”

Ben Sandomir will direct Gutenberg! The Musical! The show, about two aspiring playwrights who perform a backers’ audition for their new musical was nominated for an Outer Circle Award and a Drama Desk Award in 2007:

“The first challenge is to find two versatile actors, as they will be singing all the songs and playing all the roles,” says Sandomir. “The play is normally very barebones as these aspiring playwrights are not yet successful. This is where the fun of directing will come in. As a director and writer I’ve worked on many low and no budget productions. The smaller the budget the more creative you have to be. The juices are already flowing and I can’t wait to fully figure out what this means for Gutenberg! at Evening Star!”

“Ever since seeing a college production of See Rock City and Other Destinations a few years ago, I’ve been fascinated with the notion this musical offers,” the show’s director Geoffrey Short explains. “Traveling and relationships have more in common than might meet the eye. Whether you’re on a North Carolina highway or on a tour in Niagara Falls, exploration, discovery, getting lost and being found can happen on the road and in our personal lives too. See Rock City is a contemporary musical about connections missed and made at tourist destinations across America. When this show is presented in the intimate Evening Star theatre space I know it will create a very personal, funny and touching theatrical experience for our audiences.”

Rosalie Grant will direct Waiting for Godot herself. “Godot is a comedic director’s dream script,” she says. “It’s also the perfect vehicle for an ensemble experience. It’s a challenging piece to say the least … for actors, director and audience. Putting these three elements together guaranteed an exciting venture, and I’m excited to freshly imagine Beckett’s word play to bring the poetry, dreamscapes and nonsense to life through a cast of what will have to be very skillful actors.”

Sol Children Theatre’s first production of the 2016-2017 The Christmas Carol is perfectly timed to fit the spirit of the holiday season:

“With it paying homage to both a cherished story and treasured holiday, I’m thrilled to be directing this production,” director Christopher Mitchell explains. “Its eerie, spooky undertones and heartwarming ending will be great fun to play with next winter. Everyone loves a good ghost story and a great Christmas story. And with this show, you get both!

“Once On This Island is set in the Caribbean Sea one stormy night,” director James Skiba explains. “It contains elements of both Romeo and Juliet and the fairy tale The Little Mermaid. The story concerns a young peasant girl, TiMoune who is saved from a deadly storm by the gods on a tropical island, and who uses the power of love to bring together people of different social classes; it talks about society and the various classes and how we treat one another. In the end it is due to the young Ti Moune’s heart and her dedication to this true love that others begin to change and a seed is sown to make the world a better place where we all Live Once On This Island of Mother Earth in the hope that someday all of us might be able to truly love who ever we so choose. And that is why we tell the story.”

Evening Star Productions will continue its current season with the British Comedy Murdered to Death, which will run from April 14^th through May 1^st at Sol Theatre in Boca Raton. They are also teaming up with Infinite Abyss to present a ‘steam punk’ version of Richard O’Brien’s The Rocky Horror Show, which will run at the Abyss Theatre in Ft. Lauderdale from May 12 – 28. Rosalie Grant will direct both productions. From June 17 – 26 they will present The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) [Revised], and they’ll close out their season with a ground-breaking project directed and adapted by Seth Trucks – William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream from August 6 – 21.

FT. LAUDERDALE, FL: 16^th Century, Inc. and Evening Star productions will collaborate to present two FREE concert performances of Stephen Sondheim’s The Frogs on Thursday, November 19^th (a preview performance) and Friday, November 20^th at Studio One in Ft. Lauderdale.

The purpose of this collaboration, explains the production’s director, Rosalie Grant, “Is to increase awareness of, and appreciation for historically themed productions, and to create theatre with really cool people!”

‘Freely adapted’ from Aristophanes’ Greek comedy by Sondheim’s frequent collaborator Burt Shevlove, The Frogs was first presented as part of the Yale Repertory Theatre’s 1974 season in the university’s gymnasium’s swimming pool. In Aristophanes’ version, the play is largely a debate between Aeschylus and Euripides, to determine who is the greater artist – with the winner of the contest to return to Earth to save civilization. In Shevelove’s version, the plot remains much the same, but the contest is updated to be a debate between William Shakespeare and George Bernard Shaw. The 1974 production is particularly noted for its not yet famous cast, which included Larry Blyden, Christopher Durang, Sigourney Weaver, and Meryl Streep.

16^th Century is a not-for-profit organization that specializes in Historical Interpretation and Historical Entertainment. From whimsical and engaging characters representing exaggerations of medieval professions to specific representations of historical figures from the Renaissance, Enlightenment and Victorian eras, 16^th century strives to offer history as an “experience” in a thoughtful, fun and engaging way.

“The decision to do The Frogs as part of our Shakespeare Collaborative was a funny one,” says 16^th Century’s Chris Schultz. “The Shakespeare Collaborative is a play reading series where we offer staged readings of some of Shakespeare’s lesser known plays. Last season we did staged readings of Shakespeare’s plays and had a Marlowe Takeover night, where we read one of Shakespeare’s contemporaries, Christopher Marlowe’s play Doctor Faustus. This season we are reading Shakespeare’s plays set in Greece and some in Rome, so we refer to these as his “Greek(ish)” plays. Since Shakespeare himself adapted and contemporized several ancient Greek stories and ideas, what better way to have another Takeover than to offer up an obscure, little known Greek play by Aristophanes that had been updated and given a contemporary spin by Stephen Sondheim and Burt Shevelove, itself a dated piece of 1960’s musical theatre?

“The decision to approach Rosalie Grant and (musical director) Rebeca Diaz for this project was a no brainer,” he continues. “Both are familiar with our mission and have worked with us in various capacities in the past, although this is the first time we have ever been able to actively engage in a true collaborative effort, and I am very excited for such extraordinary talent to share their skills with us. As a small upstart theatre doing work that many might consider old and stale, the opportunity to work with Rosalie Grant who is a giant in the South Florida Theatre Community and Rebeca Diaz, who is an up and coming talent who already has earned amazing respect at her young age is an opportunity for which I am incredibly grateful. I cannot wait to see what they do with it!”

A stunning new multimedia musical which explores a groundbreaking new concept in musical theatre, this intricately woven collection of stories told through song re-imagines what the modern American musical can be.

Evening Star Productions will present Oliver’s 35mm: A Musical Exhibition at Sol Theatre in Boca Raton from October 9^th through October 25^th. (There will be a preview performance on October 8^th.)

35mm will feature Jordana Forrest, Sabrina Lynn Gore, Steven Michael Kennedy, Elvin Negron,and Eric O’Keefe. They will be accompanied by Jason Robert Buelow on piano, Meredith Levin on violin, and Ben Brown on guitar.

Evening Star’s Artistic Director Rosalie Grant will direct the production: “35mm has been a unique project to direct,” she says. Since it’s a brand-new musical we have a clean palette to work from. That has definitely had its rewards and challenges! Add in the multimedia aspects and we have been tested as a team to analyze what we’ve been given to create theatre art from it. Add in the incredibly difficult music and lyrical content and we have a powerful musical that belongs emotionally to me, Eric, Elvin, Jordana, Sabrina, Steven and their band-mates … it’s content has been derived from within each of us more so than other musicals with a standard plot construction. This isn’t your mother’s musical!”

35mm was inspired by the photographs of Matthew Murphy, an internationally recognized photographer who specializes in capturing images of theatre and dance.

“It’s a big piece and covers a wide-range of experiences and sensations,” Oliver said in a recent interview. “Truly, there’s something for everyone in this show, musically and visually. It was the easiest and probably the most rewarding thing I’ve ever written! There were no limits and so I was constantly going down new and exciting paths.”

“The timing of this show couldn’t have been better,” explains actress Sabrina Lynn Gore, who also serves as managing director of Outré Theatre Company. “I was actually looking at this show for Outré to produce for a future season, so when I saw that Rosalie was doing it, I just knew it was a sign that I had to be a part of it. And it’s been an awesome challenge for me. It’s the kind of show I’ve been wanting to be a part of for a long time.”

Gore’s cast mates are equally enthusiastic: “This has been a dream show of mine for years now,” says Steven Michael Kennedy. “And to get the chance to perform it is beyond amazing, let alone the fact that it is the regional premiere performance! The music is some of the most difficult music I’ve worked on (in terms of the constant harmonies), but with this extremely talented cast it has been nothing but a joy!”

Eric O’Keefe wholeheartedly agrees: “35mm is crazy fun and super emotional and I couldn’t be any more excited to be a part of it!” He says.

Composer and lyricist Ryan Scott Oliver is the recipient of the 2009 Jonathan Larson Grant and the 2008 Richard Rogers Award for Musical Theatre. He is an adjunct professor at Pace University in New York, and Artistic Director of the Pasadena Musical Theatre Program in California. He received his B.A. in Music Composition from UCLA and his M.F.A. in Musical Theatre Writing from the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. He is also creator of the blog Crazytown and member of A.S.C.A.P. Oliver’s work has been heard at the Writers Guild Awards, Off-Broadway in TheatreWorksUSA’s We the People, and countless showcases.

A wickedly inspired re-imagining of the Frankenstein legend, Mel Brooks’ comedy masterpiece follows bright young Dr. Frankenstein (that’s Fronkensteen!) as he attempts to complete his grandfather’s masterwork and bring a corpse to life. Dust off your disco shoes and get ready to have fun with puns. Thinking Cap Theatre will put its own unique spin on one of the theatre’s most beloved classics when it presents Oscar Wilde’s bristling comedy The Importance of Being Earnest at the Vanguard Sanctuary for the Arts. Director Nicole Stodard has set the play in December 1978 – in disco-era New York City. The show promises to be punny, prurient, and pointed, informed by both 1970’s pop culture and social issues.

Comedy Central/National Lampoon star Tommy Koenig’s Baby Boom Baby has been called wildly entertaining, touching, and very, very funny! It has also been called well-written, high energy and invigorating. Koenig will bring his one man “‘musicomedy’- a flashback through our times and the music that defined them” to the Palm Beaches theatre from April 28^th through May 15^th.

Baby Boom Baby is Koenig’s story, told from his distinctly Baby Boomer perspective. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1953, the year Rock and Roll was born. The son of a musician who played with Glenn Miller during WW2, Koenig was greatly influenced by chance meetings with John F. Kennedy and later George Carlin, and mostly by what the Beatles brought – the influence of music on Boomers’ culture and personal choices. In Baby Boom Baby Koenig recounts the years he struggled to keep up with the changing times, just missing Woodstock by a few miles; the rites of passage of College, Travel, Sex and Drugs; and the ever changing cultural and political landscape that music unleashed as it morphed from Disco to Punk to MTV to Rap and beyond.

The Delray Beach Chorale:
Now in its 34th season, under the direction of Artistic Director/Conductor Dr. Patricia P. WILTON MANORS, FL: Evening Star Productions, in partnership with Infinite Abyss will present Tracy Letts’ Bug at the Abyss Stage from August 12^th through August 29^th.

Set in a seedy Oklahoma City motel room, Bug centers on the meeting between Agnes, a divorced waitress with a tragic history, and a fondness for cocaine and isolation, and Peter, a soft-spoken Gulf War veteran and drifter introduced to her by her lesbian friend, R.C. Complicating matters are Agnes’ abusive ex-husband Jerry, who has just been released from prison, and a hidden infestation of bugs. The fears, paranoia, conspiracy theories, and twisted psychological motives at play in this searing drama make for a powerful piece of theatre.

Evening Star Productions Artistic Director Rosalie Grant will helm the production: “I’ve been itching (pardon the pun!) to direct Bug since seeing the 2006 movie,” she says. “Tracy Letts’ writing is as staccato as gun fire; as you experience the effects of dysfunction and violence, and the descent into insanity, you feel riddled by the bullets of their addictions and human weaknesses. Letts wants us to squirm … and Evening Star and Infinite’s partnership will leave audience members squirming long after the lights come up.”

“We have cast a handful of South Florida familiar faces,” Grant continues “Jim Gibbons as Dr. Sweet, Todd Bruno as Peter Evans, Erynn Dalton as Agnes, and Rachel Finley as R.C., along with Abyss favorite Dominick Daniel as Goss. Jim, Todd, Erynn and I are original Solsters (Grant is also the founder and Artistic Director of Sol Children Theatre in Boca Raton) having met and performed together at the old Sol Theatre Project. To partner with Infinite and dear old theatre friends while staging this crazy piece of theatre is going to be an unforgettable experience.”

Erynn Dalton, who will star in the production, is also Infinite Abyss’ Producing Director:
“I’ve been a fan of horror as long as I can remember- I read “Jaws” when I was 6 years old, and saw “Friday the 13th” when I was 7 (after incessantly begging my mom to take me to the drive-in to see it),” she explains. “I began Infinite Abyss Productions in 2010, and found that I was consistently being drawn to shows with dark themes. When I opened The Abyss Theatre last December, I decided that I wanted to specialize in horror-themed shows (we’re now kind of like the modern Grand Guignol) and have done original, immersive horror shows like The Krampus, 50 Shades of Poe, and most recently Exorcism.

“I was incredibly excited when Rosalie Grant approached me about co-producing “Bug” with her,” she continues. “It’s one of my favorite plays (the author, Tracy Letts, is amazing), and Agnes (the lead female character) is literally my dream role. This show is dark, disturbing and bizarre, so it really fits right in with the Infinite Abyss brand. I’ve known and worked with several of my cast mates for almost a decade (Jim Gibbons, Todd Bruno & Dominick Daniel), so it’s really a reunion of sorts, and these guys are all powerhouses. We’re all bringing our A game for this one!”

BOCA RATON, FL: Evening Star Productions will follow their sold out production of The Addams Family with The Last Five Years, Jason Robert Brown’s look at love and marriage from an unusual and innovative ‘his and hers’ perspective. The musical will open on July 17^th and run through August 2^nd at Sol Theatre in Boca Raton.

The Last Five Years is an emotionally powerful and intimate musical about two young New Yorkers who fall in and out of love over the course of five years. It premiered at Chicago’s Northlight Theatre in 2001 and debuted Off-Broadway in March 2002. The story explores the relationship between Jamie Wellerstein, a rising novelist, and Cathy Hiatt, a struggling actress. The show’s unconventional structure uses a form of storytelling in which Cathy’s story is told in reverse chronological order (beginning the show at the end of the marriage), and Jamie’s is told in chronological order (starting just after the couple have first met). The characters do not directly interact except for a wedding song in the middle of the play, as their timelines intersect.

The production will star Ben Sandomir and Sara Grant, and will be directed by Evening Star’s founder and artistic director, Rosalie Grant.

“My first exposure to The Last Five Years was when a middle-school Sara came to voice lessons wanting to work on “See I’m Smiling” and “Goodbye Until Tomorrow” and then commenced to work her way through the show”, says Grant. Grant’s daughter Sara, who will play Cathy in the production, is currently attending Seattle’s Cornish College of the Arts to receive her BFA in Theatre.

“So these characters and songs have been alive in our home for almost a decade,” she continues. “But to witness Ben and Sara connecting instantly at their first music rehearsal was electrifying. Audiences are in for an emotional roller coaster of a ride as these two actors fearlessly bring this story to life … from the laughter of new love to the despair of the doomed relationship.”

“The Last 5 Years is raw yet eloquent,” says Sara Grant. “And by the end of Cathy and Jamie’s story you sit there torn between who to empathize with more. It’s a privilege to have the opportunity to work on this difficult material, especially with a talent like Ben.”

“Part of the challenge for me will be to disconnect myself from the music during Cathy’s songs,” Sandomir explains. “The play is perfectly designed to put the audience through a rollercoaster of emotions but as actors we have to remain disciplined to pull off this effect. It’s a little intimidating to work on such a small stage,” he continues, “However, I’ve found that nothing removes my pretenses like an audience member only a few feet away! And it’s so exciting to work with Sara. What a powerful voice!”

A live musical trio, consisting of Jason Buelow on piano, Brad Miller on bass, and Lehins Aragon on violin will accompany Grant and Sandomir.

Jason Robert Brown is the three-time Tony Award-winning composer and lyricist of Songs for a New World, Parade, 13, The Bridges of Madison County, and Honeymoon In Vegas. He performs around the world as a soloist and with his band, The Caucasian Rhythm Kings, with whom he recorded his CD Wearing Someone Else’s Clothes. A film of The Last Five Years opened in theaters in February 2015 to critical acclaim, and a film of 13 is currently in development. He has conducted his orchestral suite The Trumpet of the Swan with the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center, and he has taught acting and composition at universities and colleges across the US and the UK.

MIAMI, FL: The Theatre League’s Summer Theatre Fest has become an integral part of South Florida’s cultural landscape, and this year, South Florida audiences will once again have the opportunity to see theatre for free, check out new plays in development by South Florida playwrights, and tell the world what the arts – and theatre – mean to them. The success of last summer’s Come Under Our Umbrella program and play reading series indicated to the League that theatre patrons are ready and willing to try new theatrical experiences, and even cross county lines to do it.

The theme governing this year’s Summer Theatre Fest activities is Step Onto Our Stage. A unique ‘step and repeat’ has been created especially for the program, featuring theatrical curtains in front of a wall imprinted with the League’s logo. Patrons will be invited to Step Onto Our Stage to be photographed or videoed ‘on stage’ as they are interviewed about their theatrical experiences, and the significance of the arts in their lives. The step and repeat, which made its ‘debut’ at the South Florida Theatre League sponsored Carbonell Awards ‘after party’, will travel to participating theatres throughout the summer.

Summer Theatre Fest: Each Monday from June 1 to August 31, a South Florida Theatre League member theatre will host a reading of a new play by a local playwright. Playwrights range from established local favorites, including Carbonell Award-winners and nominees, to emerging talents, with plays vastly ranging in subject matter and style. Free Night of Theater is an audience development program that has proved to be immensely popular since the League first introduced it in 2008. Free Night offers patrons an excellent opportunity to visit a venue they’ve never been to before, or sample a type of theatre they might not otherwise ever consider. Developed by the Theatre Communications Group (the national organization for American Theatre) about a decade ago to increase audiences, subsequent studies found that approximately 42% of patrons who attend a Free Night of Theatre return to that theatre and purchase tickets. So far, participating theatres include Actors’ Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre, Palm Beach Dramaworks, and Evening Star Productions, however several more theatres are expected to participate.

Patrons can sign up for tickets at summerfestfreenight.southfloridatheatre.com starting on June 10 for performances during the month of July. The window to enter the lottery will close on June 24, and patrons will find out if they have won tickets on June 29.

The South Florida Theatre League is “an alliance of theatrical organizations and professionals dedicated to nurturing, promoting, and advocating for the growth and prestige of the South Florida theatre industry”. To date, the League is the umbrella organization for close to 80 theatres between Key West and Jupiter.

***The Dana Plays: Dana Castellano was a treasured supporter of the South Florida Theatre Community who passed away from cancer in November 2014. Last year, during Summer Theatre Fest, Naked Stage Artistic Producer Antonio Amadeo coordinated the first Dana Plays – an evening of short plays about hope. The event raised over $2,000. This year’s proceeds will be donated to one of Dana’s favorite charities, the Humane Society.
