LAUDERHILL, FL: Kinky Boots, The Lauderhill Performing Arts Center and Broadway Palm’s third production of their inaugural season, will open on January 23rd. The multiple award-winning musical will run through February 9th.

Inspired by a 1999 BBC documentary, the musical tells the story of Charlie Price who reluctantly inherits his family’s business, Price & Son, a shoe manufacturing company on the verge of bankruptcy.  A chance encounter with Lola, a drag queen in need of some ‘sturdy stilettos’, inspires Charlie to work with Lola and his factory staff to turn the business around, and in doing so they both find they have more in common than they would have ever imagined

“Kinky Boots is a story taken from true events, about a young man who must learn to adapt to keep his family’s shoe making company in business,” explains the show’s director Amy Marie Cleary. “At its heart the show is about accepting others and accepting yourself. Both lead characters go on a huge journey in learning to trust themselves and honor their pasts while looking toward the future. It’s a wonderful story about the family we are born into and the family we create.”

Kinky Boots was adapted for the stage and written by four-time Tony Award-winner (and American Theater Hall of Famer) Harvey Fierstein.  The music and lyrics were written by pop icon and Grammy and Emmy Award-winner Cyndi Lauper.  “How much of a stretch is it for me to write songs about fashion, funny relationships, people changing their minds and shoes?” Lauper said in an interview with the Chicago Tribune about the show. Her process was to conceive a song and sing it into her iPhone, and the show’s orchestrator Stephen Oremus would write it down!

Kinky Boots will feature Luke Yellin as Charlie Price, David LaMarr (appearing through courtesy of Actors’ Equity Association) as Lola, Jennifer Fain as Charlie’s girlfriend Nicola, Tim Beekman Davis as Don, and Payton Reilly as Lauren, one of Charlie’s key factory workers.  11-year-old Daniel Font-Wilets of Plantation, Florida will play Young Lola, and 11- year-old Brayden Labgold-Carroll of North Miami Beach will play Young Charlie.  Other cast members include Jeffrey Duncan, Michael Hegarty, Christopher Martin, Nathan Quay Thomas, Christopher Russell, Sam Arlen, Jermarcus Riggins, Stephen Vaught, Gideon Chickos, Andy Nuanhngam, Dwight Robinette, Lester Gibbs, Caleb Schaaf, Danielle Poznanovic, Allie Tamburello, Erica Sample, Laura Titus, and Megan Orlowski.

The show’s Choreographer is Chris Kane and the show’s Musical Director is Tracy Thomas.   Set Design is by Evan Adamson, Lighting Design is by Russell Thompson, and Sound Design is by Chris McCleary.

LAUDERHILL, FL:   Once, the winner of eight 2012 Tony Awards including Best Musical, and winner of the 2013 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album, will open at the Lauderhill Performing Arts Center (LPAC) on December 5th and run through December 22nd. The musical is based on the 2007 Academy Award-winning film of the same name, which was written and directed by John Carney, and starred Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová, with original music and lyrics by Mr. Hansard and Ms. Irglová.  (The multiple award-winning Once has also won Grammy and Olivier awards.)

Featuring an impressive ensemble of actor/musicians who play their own instruments onstage, Once tells the enchanting tale of a Dublin street musician who’s about to give up on his dream when an intriguing young woman takes a sudden interest in his haunting love songs. As the chemistry between them grows, his music soars to powerful new heights, but their unlikely connection turns out to be deeper and more complex than your everyday romance. Emotionally captivating and theatrically breathtaking, Once is an unforgettable story about pursuing your dreams… not living in fear… and the power of music to connect us all.

This Apex Touring production will include a pre-show onstage bar atmosphere wherein the performers play a variety of traditional Irish and Czech tunes each night, and audience members will be invited to join them on stage with their drinks and interact with the musicians.

Michael Zygo, who performed in the Broadway production as the Emcee, will recreate the original staging and movement by John Tiffany and Steven Hoggett. As an original Broadway and Off-Broadway cast member, he feels a special attachment to the incredible work realized by the original cast and creative team. Mr. Zygo’s recent credits include Director of Once at Pittsburgh CLO and Music Director / Associate Choreographer of Once at The Fulton Theatre / Virginia Repertory Theatre. He was also featured on the Grammy Award winning cast album of Once. Other acting credits include Broadway runs of School Of Rock; and Off-Broadway credits include Once (NYTW) as well as tours of Rock Of Ages – First National, The Wedding Singer, Bridges of Madison County – first National, Annie – 30th Anniversary tour, and Oklahoma! – first National.

The Once cast is headed by Jack Gerhard as Guy and Mariah Lotz as Girl. Jack is a recent graduate of Rider University with a BFA in Musical Theatre. Previous regional credits include Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar at the Tibbits Opera House in Coldwater, Michigan. Mariah is also a graduate of Rider University and has premiered numerous new shows in New York and was part of the Rising Star program at Fifth Avenue Theatre. The ensemble includes Todd Aulwurm (Bank Manager/Cello), Carrie Lyn Brandon (Swing), Carlos Castillo (Andrej/Guitar/Electric Bass/Ukulele), Trevor Lindley Craft (Švec/Mandolin/Guitar/Drums Set/Banjo), Richard Daniel (Da/Mandolin), Elleon Dobias (Ex- Girlfriend Violin), Emily Gregonis (Réza/Violin), Caleb Hartsfield (Emcee/Guitar), Jody Alan Lee (Swing), Sam Saint Ours (Swing), Jon Patrick Penick (Billy/Guitar/Percussion), Marta Rymer (Swing/Movement Captain), Matthew Staley (Eamon/Guitar/Piano/Cajon) and Tracy Thomas (Baruška/Accordion/Concertina/Musical Supervisor).

The production features scenic and costume design by Tony Award-winner Bob Crowley (Aida, An American in Paris, Carousel, Mary Poppins) with additional designs by BroadwayWorld winner Evan Adamson (Mamma Mia), lighting design by Russell A. Thompson (international tour of The Wizard of Oz, US tours Million Dollar Quartet, Fiddler on the Roof) and sound design by David Temby (Clearwing Productions/national tours of Memphis and Cabaret).

LAUDERHILL, FL: Lauderhill Performing Arts Center, in collaboration with Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre located in Fort Myers, FL, is holding open auditions for children for their upcoming productions from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, November 16, 2019 from. Auditions will be held at LPAC. The following are the roles that are available:

Kinky Boots (At LPAC)
Rehearsals January 11, 12, 17 and 18, 2020 in Fort Myers at Broadway Palm
Tech January 20 – 23, 2020 at LPAC in Lauderhill
The production runs from January 23 – February 9, 2020 at LPAC.
Roles of:
Young Charlie – a seven-year old boy who is lost, quiet, and reflective.
Young Lola – a ten-year old African American boy who already knows he is destined to wear high heels.
Both actors must be 5 feet tall and under and must be able to sing and act well.

Beauty and the Beast (At LPAC)
Rehearsals February 6 – 16, 2020 at LPAC
Tech February 17 – 19, 2020 at LPAC
The production runs February 20 – March 8, 2020
Roles of:
Chip -male – seven to ten years old.
Ensemble Girl – seven to ten years old.
Both actors must be 5 feet tall and under and must be able to sing and act well.

All youth actors must be local to the Lauderhill area

Anyone auditioning should be prepared to sing “Be Our Guest” from Beauty and the Beast and read from the script. Audition sides are available at https://lpacfl.com/, or can be picked up at the LPAC box office window. Please bring two current headshots and a resume. Those auditioning MUST audition with these sides and music that is provided.

Lauderhill Performing Arts Center (LPAC) is a professional theatre and 4 complimentary tickets will be provided as payment for their performances in all shows. The role will be double cast and children will alternate performances. Performances at Lauderhill Performing Arts Center are Wednesday through Saturday evenings at 7:30 p.m. with matinees on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday at 2:00 p.m. Anyone interested must be available for the rehearsal process and all alternated, assigned performances.

LAUDERHILL, FL:  West Side Story: Classic. Powerful. Groundbreaking. Heartbreaking.  All words that have been used to describe one of Broadway’s most memorable and iconic pieces of musical theatre.  The Lauderhill Performing Arts Center in collaboration with Broadway Palm will present West Side Story as the first production in their brand-new Broadway at the LPAC series.  The show will run from November 14th through December 1st.

Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is transported to modern-day New York City as two young idealistic lovers find themselves caught between warring street gangs, the “American” Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks.  The story of their struggle to survive in a world of hate, violence, and prejudice became one of the most innovative, heart-wrenching musicals of all time, and the subject matter is as relevant today as it was when the show opened in 1957.

West Side Story was written by Arthur Laurents. The musical’s score was composed by Leonard Bernstein, and the show was choreographed by Jerome Robbins, who won a Tony Award for his work.  West Side Story also marked the Broadway debut of a then unknown lyricist/composer – Stephen Sondheim.   Sondheim was contracted to write the lyrics for the show after composer Bernstein decided that he needed to concentrate solely on the music.  (Sondheim originally declined the offer, but his mentor, Oscar Hammerstein, convinced him to do it, telling him he would benefit from the experience.)

The production’s Artistic Producer, Brian Enzman, has cast Alexa Lopez and Jacob Tarconish as West Side Story’s star-crossed lovers, Maria and Tony.

“West Side Story was the first piece of musical theater I had ever seen live, it was the first thing that sparked my passion for performing, and so it holds an extremely special place in my heart,” seventeen-year old Lopez, a senior at the American Heritage School in Plantation, explains. “Looking back, I remember how moved I was by the rich music, the actors, and the relevant story they were telling. I saw myself on stage that night, and was able to, as a Cuban-American, deeply identify with Maria. I’ve carried this show with me since and am truly amazed at how contemporary it remains today. It is a story that I am honored to be able to tell.

“My journey with West Side has been a long one,” she continues. “I auditioned for the role of Maria many times and at many levels. One of my most memorable experiences was this past year when I had the wonderful opportunity of making it to the final round of callbacks for the upcoming 2020 Broadway revival, auditioning for Ivo Van Hove, the director. In any case, I’m so ecstatic to finally play Maria and be able to share her story.”

Jacob Tarconish

Jacob Tarconish has given a lot of thought to the relevance of the play in today’s world, and to his character:  “The Sharks and Jets are in this world of divisiveness, racism and xenophobia, and then you have two people fall in love and realize “everything we’ve been told to believe is wrong. We’re all just people whose differences aren’t a reason to hate each other, they’re what make us exciting and magical”, and we see what happens when two people challenge those barriers and try to tear them down,” he says. “I think in our country today, there’s a lot of that same divisiveness and there’s also a sense of drastically changing beliefs, which makes West Side Story such a powerful and wonderful piece of theatre to be a part of.

“I think a lot of people have a side of Tony in them,” he continues. “He’s got a job, he’s at a point in his life where he’s grown past what his friends are still doing, but he’s kind of dissatisfied. He’s got all this energy and ambition, but nothing to really use it on. Then, he meets Maria, and his world instantly changes. He realizes “I’ve found someone who understands me, who sees me, and I would do absolutely anything and everything to be with her,” and suddenly he’s alive again, he’s using that drive again, and it makes him feel like he’s superhuman. I think people can absolutely identify with that sense of longing and passion.”

The rest of the West Side Story cast includes the Shark Girls – Katie Whittemore as Anita, Sandi Stock as Francisca, Emily Stys as Rosalia and Emilee Hassanzadeh as Margarita; The Jets Girls:  Sarah Rose Knoche as Anybodys, Laura Titus as Graziella, Lauren Cagnetta as Minnie and Bailee Cudmore as Velman; The Sharks:  Pasqualino Beltempo as Bernardo, Brandon Santos as Chino, Jermarcus Riggins as Pepe, Phillip Giandiletti as Luis and Richel Ruiz as Juan; The Jets:  Rhett Warner as Riff, Robert Ayala as Action, Michael Friedman as A-Rab, Clint Maddox Thompson as Baby John, Mason Lewis as Diesel and Derik Lawson as Snowboy.  Also in the cast are Peter Librach as Doc, Craig Smith as Lieutenant Schrank, and Justin Schneyer as Officer Krupke.

West Side Story will be directed by Dean Sobon, with musical direction by Eric Alsford, and the show’s Choreographer is Ron Hutchins.  Lighting Design is by Russell Thompson, Lighting Design is by Chris Young, and Costume Design is by John White.

West Side Story will run from November 14th– December 1st. Callbacks will be held on Sunday, September 22, 2019. Actors will be informed at the Saturday auditions if they are needed for a callback on Sunday.

Anyone auditioning should bring two copies of their current headshots and resumes and be prepared to sing a one-minute cut in the musical theatre genre that best shows off their vocal range. Please bring sheet music in the proper key; an accompanist will be provided (no recorded music is accepted). After the vocal audition actors/actresses may be asked to attend a dance audition or attend the Sunday reading/singing callback auditions.       

Lauderhill Performing Arts Center (LPAC) is a professional theatre and a professional weekly salary will be provided. Productions require a rehearsal process with rehearsals daily, generally from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Anyone auditioning must be available for the entire rehearsal process and all performances. Performances at the Lauderhill Performing Arts Center are Wednesday through Saturday evenings with matinees on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. Limited housing will be available for LPAC, but we are primarily seeking actors/actresses within the Lauderhill area with housing.

LAUDERHILL, FL:  The Lauderhill Performing Arts Center (LPAC) has partnered with Prather Productions to produce an exciting new musical theatre series, Broadway in Broward, at the state-of-the art venue beginning in November 2019. Four productions are planned for the 2019-2020 season:  West Side Story, Once, Kinky Boots, and Beauty and the Beast.

Prather Productions includes Broadway Palm in Fort Myers, Florida (now in its 26th season), and Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre in Lancaster, Pennsylvania (now in its 31st season), along with Prather Touring and Apex Touring.

“I have been producing theatre year-round in Florida for over 26 years and am most notably known for Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre on the west coast in Fort Myers,” Will Prather, Prather Productions owner and Executive Producer said recently. “While I have also produced national and international tours, it has been a goal of mine to have a consistent presence on the east coast of Florida. The opportunity to partner with LPAC couldn’t have come at a better time, and all of us at Prather Productions are extremely excited to bring together our creative team and the incredible local talent that the east coast of Florida has to offer.”

LAUDERHILL, FL:   The timeless music of George and Ira Gershwin plus an aviator, a Channel swimmer, exuberant dance numbers, sparkling costumes, romance, comedy, and America in 1927 equals My One and Only, Stage Door Theatre’s upcoming production at the Lauderhill Performing Arts Center (LPAC). The show will open on March 8th and run through March 24th.

Created to showcase the Gershwins’ marvelous music, My One and Only ran for two years on Broadway and won 6 Tony Awards and 3 Drama Desk Awards.

The plot is classic musical comedy:  Captain Billy Buck Chandler, a barnstorming aviator, falls for Edythe Herbert, a former English Channel swimmer and the star of Prince Nicolai Erraclyovitch Tchatchavadze’s International Aquacade. Billy, who plans to be the first man to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean, hopes to win Edythe’s hand by taking a crash course in sophistication at Mr. Magix’ Tonsorial and Sartorial Emporial. Billy’s wisecracking female mechanic, Mickey, adds a bit of sass as a series of escapades and misadventures keep the potential lovers from finding happiness.

Jonathan Van Dyke will direct the production: “My One and Only is the all singing, all dancing, all hilarity Gershwin musical comedy and it’s such a thrill to be able to present it with Broward Stage Door Theatre,” he says.  It was a giant hit in the early 1980’s with Tommy Tune and Twiggy and we have assembled a spectacular cast and creative team to tap this gem into the Lauderhill PAC. The song list is a treasure, and this feel good musical will have everyone “Kicking’ The Clouds Away”!”

Along with “Kicking the Clouds Away”, My One and Only features such Gershwin classics as “I Can’t Be Bothered Now”, “’S Wonderful”, “Strike Up the Band”, “Funny Face”, “Nice Work If You Can Get It”, and of course, “My One and Only”.

Van Dyke’s cast includes Derek Seay, who will play Billy Buck Chandler and Caiti Marlowe, who will ‘channel’ Edythe Herbert. Also cast are Larry Buzzeo as Prince Nikke, Colleen Pagano as Mickey, Michael Small as Reverend Montgomery, and Ben Bagby as Mr. Magix.  Bagby was in the original Broadway production of My One and Only.

“The year was 1983 and I had just gotten my Actors Equity card from a contract with DreamGirls,” Bagby reminisced recently. “I began going to Equity auditions for Cats, My One and Only, and other shows running on Broadway at the time. The night before I opened in My One and Only, I was offered a spot in the Broadway cast of Cats. Of course, I declined but it was nice to be asked.

“I went into the My One and Only cast in August ’83 as a replacement. This means I didn’t get to appear on the Tony Awards, but I did get to record the Original Cast Album (thus my Original Cast status).

“In 2013, I was invited and attended the 30 year MOAO Cast Reunion in NYC (on my birthday) where I was able to catch up with cast members I had not seen or spoken to in 30 years.

“This will be my first time performing in any production of My One and Only since performing in it on Broadway 36 years ago,” He continued. “I’ve always wanted to play Mr. Magix so I’m absolutely thrilled I will have the chance to with the Broward Stage Door at the LPAC. Charles “Honi” Coles, the Original Mr. Magix, was my friend and has forever influenced the way I tap dance. I’m happy to be presenting his original timeless choreography in this role.”

Other cast members are Raymond Bennett, Kaitlyn Casanova, Amanda Eisele, Alexandra Garcia, Luis Gomez, Melissa Jones, Aaron Kenisberg, Ellen Kilgo, T.J. Lamando, Dequan Mitchell, Samantha O’Donnell, Sarah Rose, Ashley Rubin, and Nicholas Winterowd.

David Taustine will serve as the production’s Musical Director and Danny Durr is My One and Only’s Choreographer. Set Design is by Johnny Blessed, Sound Design is by King Raymonvil, and Costume Design is by Lenora Nikitin.  The production’s Stage Manager is Nancy Clay.

LAUDERHILL, FL:  Stage Door Theatre’s third production in their new home is an exuberant journey down the yellow brick road! Based the L. Frank Baum’s classic “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz”, The Wiz is a dazzling mix of rock, gospel, and soul music, and told in the context of African American Culture.    The family friendly musical will open at the Lauderhill Performing Arts Center (LPAC) on December 7th and run through December 31st.

The winner of seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and Five Drama Desk Awards, The Wiz retells Baum’s tale of Dorothy, who is transported by a tornado to a world of Munchkins, witches, and magic.  On her way to the Emerald City to meet the Wizard of Oz, who she believes can help her get back to Kansas, she encounters the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion – friends who help her battle the Wicked Witch of the West – and eventually learn that there really is ‘no place like home’.

The Wiz will be directed and choreographed by Lloyd Culbreath who brings years of theatrical experience to the production.  He has performed on Broadway, and on tour for over 25 years as a dancer, singer, actor, teacher, dance captain, stage manager, and assistant and associate choreographer.

“Working on The Wiz is such a joy!” says Culbreath. “Soulful, sassy, and brimming with joy! The show is such a wonderful combination of amazing memorable songs, spectacular dancing and armfuls of heart and love. It offers something for everyone. I’m thrilled to spend this time in the land of Oz!”

Cast in The Wiz are Nayomi Braaf as Dorothy, Kedrick D. Faulk as Scarecrow, Ben Bagby as Tin Man, Darius J. Manuel as Lion, Kyaunnee Richardson as Aunt Em/Glinda, Arlene Coutee as Addaperle, and Jamari Johnson Williams as The Wiz. 2017 Carbonell Award-winner (Best Actress, Musical) Sarah Gracel will play Evelline. Also in the cast are Michael Baugh, Kolten Bell, Alexander Domingue, Cameron Jackson, Kimberly Mhoon, Johanna Moise, Alicia Nicole, Mickey Nixon, Amy Romero, Andre Russell, Johanna Taylor, and Shanna Woods.

David Nagy will serve as the production’s Musical Director and keyboard 1; he will be accompanied by Karen Nagy on keyboard 2,  Andrea Gilbert on woodwind, Sandy Poltarack on bass and Guitar, Brian Sayre on drums, and Rupert Ziawinski on Bass.  Marissa Calabrese is The Wiz’ Associate Director. Scenic Design is by Randall Parsons, Lighting Design is by Kirk Bookman, and Sound Design is by Rushnay Henry.  The production’s Stage Manager is Nancy Clay.

LAUDERHILL, FL:  Stage Door Theatre’s move to the Lauderhill Performing Arts Center (LPAC) has proved to be the right one, according to the company’s Executive Producer, Derelle Bunn.  “Our patrons’ responses have been totally positive,” she says.  “They love the venue, the ambiance, and the conveniences LPAC offers them.  They’ve all promised they’ll be back, and that they’ll be bringing their friends!”

Stage Door’s second production in their new state-of-the-art home should definitely entice their audiences –returning and new:  Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is an award-winning musical comedy based on the hit movie of the same name.  It will open at on October 12th and run through November 4th. 

Lawrence Jameson makes his lavish living by talking rich ladies out of their money.  Freddy Benson more humbly swindles women by waking their compassion with fabricated stories about his grandmother’s failing health.  After meeting on a train, they attempt to work together, only to find that their small town isn’t big enough for both of them. They agree on a settlement – the first one to extract $50,000 from their mutual target, young heiress Christine Colgate, wins, and the other must leave town.

Sophisticated, suave, and with a good dash of mischief, this thoroughly entertaining musical features a delightfully jazzy score and was nominated for eleven Tony Awards.  The music is by David Yazbek (The Full Monty, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, and this year’s Tony Award winner for Best musical, The Band’s Visit).  The show’s book is by Jeffrey Lane (Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown).

The production will be directed by Clayton Phillips: “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is a perfect example of an escapist piece of musical theatre,” he explains.  “It does not take itself too seriously, and it has a wonderfully jazzy score.  I guess if there is a message in it at all, it is that greed does not pay (or does it?). The show is full of twists and turns and is a real comedy from start to finish.  I love this musical because it is smart and funny and entertaining,” he says.  “And what more could we want these days?!”

Cast in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels are Michael Cartwright as Lawrence Jameson, Matthew Kurzyniec as Freddy Benson, and Sabrina Lynn Gore as Christine Colgate. Also in the cast are Aaron Bower, Austin Carrol, Marty Craft, Alexandra Nicole Garcia, Sebastian Goldberg, Chris Hendricks, Michael Kruetz, Cat Pagano, Vincent Pelligrino, Sarah Rose, Laura Titus, and Alexandra Van Hasselt.
