MARGATE, FL:  Acclaimed for its ‘magic’, ‘simplicity’, and ‘compassion’, Carnival blends music, comedy, and pathos into what has been referred to as ‘America’s Magical Musical’.  Carnival will open at Margate’s Stage Door Theatre on January 22nd and run through February 28th.

Adapted from the 1953 film Lili, which was in turn based on short story by Paul Gallico (‘The Man Who Hated People’), Carnival tells the tale of Lili, an orphan, who arrives at a small European carnival seeking a friend of her late father’s and, she hopes, an offer of a home. There she is pulled between two masculine forces in the company: magician Marco the Magnificent and Paul, a misanthropic puppeteer.   Michael Stewart (Hello Dolly) wrote the book, and Bob Merrill (lyricist for Funny Girl and numerous pop songs including ‘How Much is that Doggie in the Window’) wrote Carnival’s music and lyrics.  The original production was directed and choreographed by Gower Champion.

Carnival debuted in 1961 won several awards, including two Tonys, an Outer Critics Circle Award, and the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award as Best Musical of 1962. The title song ‘Theme from Carnival (Love Makes the World Go ‘Round)’ has become a standard in the lexicon of American musical theatre.

Stage Door’s artistic director Dan Kelley will direct the production:
“I’m so excited about this show,” Kelley says.  “I love a challenge and this project provided many. Where do I the find puppets that play such an important part in the story? I knew Goodspeed Opera House in Connecticut did a production of Carnival in 2010, so I gave them a call – and the next thing I knew I had rented the complete set that were designed and built by master puppeteer Robert Smythe.  And,” he continues, “The puppets were underwritten by a very generous donation from The Friends of the Cultural Arts!

“I had to find an ensemble that not only could sing and dance but also had to possess all sorts of crazy circus skills, so I put an ad in Playbill and was lucky to find ten very talented and flexible, performers – our audiences will see jugglers, acrobats, aerialists, and puppeteers.

“The show starts out in a field and the performers erect a circus tent in front of the audience-ugh- what?” he continues “I called set designer Michael McClain and he didn’t run screaming from the meeting – and his design for the show is as magical as it needs to be. So many specialty costumes needed to be built so I called Larry Bauman and he agreed and has done some beautiful sketches and is probably sewing, and cursing me, at this very moment! I needed an innovative choreographer who wasn’t daunted by this huge show and I remembered Ben Solmor and the fine work he did with last year’s production of Cabaret; I gave him a call and he agreed to join the team.  Rounding out my Carnival production staff is multiple Carbonell Award-winner and great friend, musical director David Nagy.”

“I have particularly enjoyed getting to know Michael Stewart’s Lili,” she says.  “She’s a beacon of optimistic light, and a portrayal of how no matter what the world throws at you, persistent positivity can transform even the most cynical.  Bob Merrill’s music beautifully helps promote these ideas in Lili’s nostalgic ‘Mira’, and ‘Love Makes the World Go ‘Round’, songs that I love to sing.”

Other cast members include Bruno Faria as Paul, Alexa Baray as Rosalie, Michael Santora as Marco, Jason Plourde as Schlegel, Sebastian Lombardo as Jaquot, and Sean Dorazio as Grobert and Dr. Glass.

MARGATE, FL:  What do the Everly Brothers, Bobby Darrin, B.B. King, Frank and Elvis have in common?  Great music… and great hair!  Pompadour, a new musical review by Michael Leeds and Kevin Black features a quintet of ‘pompadoured’ guys singing and dancing through five decades of unforgettable music.  The production will run from December 26th, 2015 through January 31st, 2016.

“A few years ago I was out browsing through CDs and it was surprising to see the number of current male artists – like Justin Beiber and Bruno Mars – who sported the classic pompadour,” says Leeds.  “And I started thinking about the many singers through the years who’ve worn that style. After some research I discovered that the Pompadour originated as a symbol of both beauty and rebellion, and its lineage includes some of our greatest artists and groups spanning decades of music. And that was the genesis for a new musical revue called Pompadour!

“I divided the show into seven segments, the same way I had done with Swinging On A Star, but instead of a journey through time, it’s a journey through the different musical styles,” Leeds continues. “Our guides are five amazingly talented guys who all sing, dance, act, and play musical instruments!  We travel from Pop standards to Latin to Country to R&B, using the music made famous by solo artists (all pompadoured!) like Sinatra, Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Jose Feliciano; duos like the Righteous Brothers and the Everly Brothers, and great groups like the Temptations, the Beach Boys, and Smokey Robinson and the Miracles.  When you’ve got a show that goes everywhere from Good Golly Miss Molly to La Bamba, from Midnight Train To Georgia to Witchcraft, it’s, – to quote a song we use – Unforgettable!”

“From the very first conceptual meeting, over two years ago now, I knew Michael had something special with his concept for Pompadour,” says Kevin Black, who will act as the show’s co-director and choreographer. “We had never worked together before, but 15 minutes into the conversation, I knew this collaboration would be a great one!

“First and foremost, we needed a must-talented cast. After over a year of auditioning, we found our five guys who not only have incredible voices, but are also very talented dancers, tappers and play piano, sax and acoustic guitar,” Black says. “As for set design, we knew we wanted a large LED screen, allowing us limitless possibilities in our seven thematic segments. Bringing in Michael McClain and Manny Schwartzman has taken our original vision to an even more creative place. We are all looking forward to seeing our vision come to life over the next few weeks.”

Leeds and Black’s five Pompadoured guys are Anthony Massaraotto, Stephen Millet, Preston Grover, Brandon Godfrey, and Jay Wilkinson.

Pompadour will run from December 26, 2015 – January 31, 2016 at The Stage Door Theatre.

BOCA RATON, FL: Sol Children Theatre will follow up their recent sold out productions of The Mystery of Edwin Drood and Thumbelina with a classic musical comedy bound to appeal to audiences of all ages. Once Upon a Mattress will open on December 3rd and run through December 20th in the company’s charming black box venue in Boca Raton.

Based on the Hans Christian Andersen story “The Princess and the Pea”, Once Upon a Mattress puts a uniquely comic spin on the the tale of a medieval kingdom’s search for a proper princess to marry the hapless Prince Dauntless. Enter Winnifred the Woebegone, princess of the far-off swampland Farfelot – who makes her entrance looking like a drowned rat — she swam the moat. Winnifred, or Fred to her friends, is altogether too common for Dauntless’ mother, Queen Aggravain’s taste. “Blood will tell,” spits the Queen, “and yours doesn’t tell quite enough.” The Prince, however, immediately falls in love. But before happily ever after can ensue, Winnifred must pass a test, and prove to the Queen that she is indeed a true princess.

Gisbert Heuer will direct the production: “Once Upon a Mattress has always been one of my favorite musicals,” says Heuer. “So I’m particularly excited to bring my own personal vision of this show to life and onto our stage. Our cast is inspiring – the fact that it includes children who are just beginning to learn the art of stage craft, and pairs them with adult professional performers, allowing them to experience all that goes into to an actual professional production, adds a unique and exciting aspect to the show.”

Del Marrero and Burke Schoeppl will play Princess Winnifred and Prince Dauntless. Other cast members include Ellie Katz Murray (Queen Aggravain), Devin Tupler (Lady Larkin), Steven Michael Kennedy (Sir Harry), Courtney Ruebens (Minstrel), Jessi Ryan (Jester), Rylee Siegel (Lady in Waiting), Jennipher Murphy-Whitcomb (Wizard), and Meredith Levin (First Knight)

“It is such a pleasure to be under the direction of the incomparable musical genius, Gisbert Heuer,” says Burke Schoeppl. “I am filled with utmost joy to be returning to performing onstage at Sol Theatre with such a fantastic cast and crew. I will be playing the role of Prince Dauntless, a total “mama’s boy” on the search for a bona fide princess to meet his mother’s high expectations of a perfect mate. FT. LAUDERDALE, FL: 16th Century, Inc. and Evening Star productions will collaborate to present two FREE concert performances of Stephen Sondheim’s The Frogs on Thursday, November 19th (a preview performance) and Friday, November 20th at Studio One in Ft. Lauderdale.

The purpose of this collaboration, explains the production’s director, Rosalie Grant, “Is to increase awareness of, and appreciation for historically themed productions, and to create theatre with really cool people!”

‘Freely adapted’ from Aristophanes’ Greek comedy by Sondheim’s frequent collaborator Burt Shevlove, The Frogs was first presented as part of the Yale Repertory Theatre’s 1974 season in the university’s gymnasium’s swimming pool.   In Aristophanes’ version, the play is largely a debate between Aeschylus and Euripides, to determine who is the greater artist – with the winner of the contest to return to Earth to save civilization. In Shevelove’s version, the plot remains much the same, but the contest is updated to be a debate between William Shakespeare and George Bernard Shaw. The 1974 production is particularly noted for its not yet famous cast, which included Larry Blyden, Christopher Durang, Sigourney Weaver, and Meryl Streep.

16th Century is a not-for-profit organization that specializes in Historical Interpretation and Historical Entertainment.  From whimsical and engaging characters representing exaggerations of medieval professions to specific representations of historical figures from the Renaissance, Enlightenment and Victorian eras, 16th century strives to offer history as an “experience” in a thoughtful, fun and engaging way.

“The decision to do The Frogs as part of our Shakespeare Collaborative was a funny one,” says 16th Century’s Chris Schultz. “The Shakespeare Collaborative is a play reading series where we offer staged readings of some of Shakespeare’s lesser known plays.  Last season we did staged readings of Shakespeare’s plays and had a Marlowe Takeover night, where we read one of Shakespeare’s contemporaries, Christopher Marlowe’s play Doctor Faustus.  This season we are reading Shakespeare’s plays set in Greece and some in Rome, so we refer to these as his “Greek(ish)” plays.  Since Shakespeare himself adapted and contemporized several ancient Greek stories and ideas, what better way to have another Takeover than to offer up an obscure, little known Greek play by Aristophanes that had been updated and given a contemporary spin by Stephen Sondheim and Burt Shevelove, itself a dated piece of 1960’s musical theatre?

“The decision to approach Rosalie Grant and (musical director) Rebeca Diaz for this project was a no brainer,” he continues. “Both are familiar with our mission and have worked with us in various capacities in the past, although this is the first time we have ever been able to actively engage in a true collaborative effort, and I am very excited for such extraordinary talent to share their skills with us.  As a small upstart theatre doing work that many might consider old and stale, the opportunity to work with Rosalie Grant who is a giant in the South Florida Theatre Community and Rebeca Diaz, who is an up and coming talent who already has earned amazing respect at her young age is an opportunity for which I am incredibly grateful.  I cannot wait to see what they do with it!”

Cast members for the production include Geoffrey Short as Dionysos, Aaron Berman as Xanthias, John Robert Franklin as William Shakespeare, and Skye Whitcombe as George Bernard Shaw.

BOCA RATON, FL: If a picture is worth 1,000 words — what about a song? Can a picture inspire a song …or fifteen? In Ryan Scott Oliver’s 35mm: A Musical Exhibition each photo creates a unique song, moments frozen in time; a glimmer of a life unfolding, a glimpse of something happening. A stunning new multimedia musical which explores a groundbreaking new concept in musical theatre, this intricately woven collection of stories told through song re-imagines what the modern American musical can be.

Evening Star Productions will present Oliver’s 35mm: A Musical Exhibition at Sol Theatre in Boca Raton from October 9th through October 25th. (There will be a preview performance on October 8th.)

35mm will feature Jordana Forrest, Sabrina Lynn Gore, Steven Michael Kennedy, Elvin Negron,and Eric O’Keefe. They will be accompanied by Jason Robert Buelow on piano, Meredith Levin on violin, and Ben Brown on guitar.

Evening Star’s Artistic Director Rosalie Grant will direct the production: “35mm has been a unique project to direct,” she says.  Since it’s a brand-new musical we have a clean palette to work from.  That has definitely had its rewards and challenges! Add in the multimedia aspects and we have been tested as a team to analyze what we’ve been given to create theatre art from it.  Add in the incredibly difficult music and lyrical content and we have a powerful musical that belongs emotionally to me, Eric, Elvin, Jordana, Sabrina, Steven and their band-mates … it’s content has been derived from within each of us more so than other musicals with a standard plot construction.  This isn’t your mother’s musical!”

35mm was inspired by the photographs of Matthew Murphy, an internationally recognized photographer who specializes in capturing images of theatre and dance.

“It’s a big piece and covers a wide-range of experiences and sensations,” Oliver said in a recent interview. “Truly, there’s something for everyone in this show, musically and visually. It was the easiest and probably the most rewarding thing I’ve ever written! There were no limits and so I was constantly going down new and exciting paths.”

Sabrina-240x300“The timing of this show couldn’t have been better,” explains actress Sabrina Lynn Gore, who also serves as managing director of Outré Theatre Company. “I was actually looking at this show for Outré to produce for a future season, so when I saw that Rosalie was doing it, I just knew it was a sign that I had to be a part of it. And it’s been an awesome challenge for me. It’s the kind of show I’ve been wanting to be a part of for a long time.”

Gore’s cast mates are equally enthusiastic: “This has been a dream show of mine for years now,” says Steven Michael Kennedy. “And to get the chance to perform it is beyond amazing, let alone the fact that it is the regional premiere performance! The music is some of the most difficult music I’ve worked on (in terms of the constant harmonies), but with this extremely talented cast it has been nothing but a joy!”

Eric O’Keefe wholeheartedly agrees: “35mm is crazy fun and super emotional and I couldn’t be any more excited to be a part of it!” He says.

Composer and lyricist Ryan Scott Oliver is the recipient of the 2009 Jonathan Larson Grant and the 2008 Richard Rogers Award for Musical Theatre. He is an adjunct professor at Pace University in New York, and Artistic Director of the Pasadena Musical Theatre Program in California. He received his B.A. in Music Composition from UCLA and his M.F.A. in Musical Theatre Writing from the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. He is also creator of the blog Crazytown and member of A.S.C.A.P. Oliver’s work has been heard at the Writers Guild Awards, Off-Broadway in TheatreWorksUSA’s We the People, and countless showcases.

MARGATE, FL: When The Fantasticks opened at the Sullivan Street Playhouse in Greenwich Village on May 3rd, 1960, no one, least of all its creators, had any idea this simple yet stylistic musical would become the longest lasting production in theatrical history, running in its original incarnation for 42 years, and 17,162 performances.

Described as a “funny and romantic musical about a boy, a girl, two fathers and a wall, the play’s narrator, El Gallo, asks the audience to use their imagination and follow him into a world of moonlight and magic. The boy and the girl fall in love, grow apart, and finally find their way back to each other after realizing the truth in El Gallo’s words that “without a hurt, the heart is hollow”.”

The book and lyrics by Tom Jones and music by Harvey Schmidt include Try to Remember, They Were You, and Soon It’s Gonna Rain, and have become as timeless as the story itself. The musical is based loosely on several literary classics including The Romancers (Les Romanesques) by Edmond Rostand, which draws elements from the story of Pyramus and Thisbe, Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore.

“The Fantasticks is the longest running show in the history of the American theatre,” says director Dan Kelley. “Among the thousands of actors who have performed in The Fantasticks are: Anna Maria Alberghetti, Richard Chamberlain, Elliot Gould, Bert Lahr, Liza Minnelli, Jerry Orbach, F. Murray Abraham, and Glenn Close. I have a wonderful cast including some familiar faces as well as some exciting newcomers,” he continues. “Making their Stage Door debut will be Alexander Zenoz as Matt, Steve Goldstein as Bellomy, Sebastian Lombardo as Mortimer, Alan Gerstel as Henry, and Pedro Kaawaloa as El Gallo. And returning to our stage will be Molly Anne Ross as Luisa, Pierre Tannous as The Mute, and Larry Bramble as Hucklebee.”

“The Fantasticks has always been one of my favorite shows,” production’s musical director David Nagy explains.  “I’m old enough that, when I was first getting involved in musical theater, it was a relatively new show.  I think the score has some of the most beautiful songs ever written for the theater, and there’s a timeless element to the script.  Although I have seldom done the same show more than once, The Fantasticks is one of the few shows I don’t mind doing over and over.  Through the years, I’ve gotten to meet several individuals from the 1960 production:  Rita Gardner, the original Luisa; Julian Stein, the original music director; and Jones and Schmidt themselves.  It was always a thrill to meet these people who were part of a show that was so important to me growing up.

“One of the first times I was ever on stage was in a revue, dancing to the song “They Were You” which is sung at the end of the show, Nagy continues.  “I can’t remember my dancing partner’s name, but I remember her nickname was “Peanut”.  So to Peanut, wherever you are:  this one’s for you!”

The Fantasticks will run from September 4 – October 11 at The Stage Door Theatre. The theatre is located at 8036 Sample Road, Margate, 33065.

MARGATE, FL: Stage Door Theatre will exercise the considerable musical and comedic abilities of a talented cast when it presents WaistWatchers The Musical! from July 10th through September 6th.

Although the show, set in Cook’s Women’s Gym, takes a lighthearted look at four adult women dealing with assorted body image issues, it covers topics such as dieting exercise, plastic surgery, and sex over the age of forty – areas of concern to women, and to men – of all ages.

Playwright Alan Jacobson has rewritten the lyrics of popular songs to suit the subject, and some of his cleverly appropriate numbers include “Botox Queen” to the tune of ABBA’s “Dancing Queen”, “I Hope I Lose It” to the tune of “I Hope I Get It” from A Chorus Line, “Viagra” to the tune of “Maria” from West Side Story, and “I Feel My Butt Squeeze” to the tune of Carole King’s “I Feel The Earth Move.”

“When I first wrote WaistWatchers The Musical! I was looking to create a fun show that people of all ages, backgrounds, and lifestyles could enjoy,” Jacobson explains. “I couldn’t think of anything more universal and topical than food. I truly don’t know anyone who doesn’t eat it! And people sure talk about and obsess over it. What has given me the greatest satisfaction is seeing how people respond to the show,” he says, “Not only with laughter and pleasure, but how so many people identify with the struggles, and are inspired to lead healthier lives. And to me, that is what theater is all about.”

“To make this show work you need to find four terrific triple threat performers and I found them,” says WaistWatcher’s director, Dan Kelley. “Katie Angell who is a Broadway World nominee for best actress in Nine To Five, Shenise Nunez (A Chorus Line, I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change, Nine To Five, Sophisticated Ladies) will be joined by Angela Thomas and Stephanie Genovese both of whom are making their Stage Door debuts. This show is very cleverly written and it will delight our audiences,” he continues: “Be prepared to laugh off a few pounds and celebrate the power. The power of feeling good, being healthy, and being happy.”

BOCA RATON, FL: Evening Star Productions will follow their sold out production of The Addams Family with The Last Five Years, Jason Robert Brown’s look at love and marriage from an unusual and innovative ‘his and hers’ perspective. The musical will open on July 17th and run through August 2nd at Sol Theatre in Boca Raton.

The Last Five Years is an emotionally powerful and intimate musical about two young New Yorkers who fall in and out of love over the course of five years. It premiered at Chicago’s Northlight Theatre in 2001 and debuted Off-Broadway in March 2002. The story explores the relationship between Jamie Wellerstein, a rising novelist, and Cathy Hiatt, a struggling actress. The show’s unconventional structure uses a form of storytelling in which Cathy’s story is told in reverse chronological order (beginning the show at the end of the marriage), and Jamie’s is told in chronological order (starting just after the couple have first met). The characters do not directly interact except for a wedding song in the middle of the play, as their timelines intersect.

The production will star Ben Sandomir and Sara Grant, and will be directed by Evening Star’s founder and artistic director, Rosalie Grant.

“My first exposure to The Last Five Years was when a middle-school Sara came to voice lessons wanting to work on “See I’m Smiling” and “Goodbye Until Tomorrow” and then commenced to work her way through the show”, says Grant.  Grant’s daughter Sara, who will play Cathy in the production, is currently attending Seattle’s Cornish College of the Arts to receive her BFA in Theatre.

“So these characters and songs have been alive in our home for almost a decade,” she continues. “But to witness Ben and Sara connecting instantly at their first music rehearsal was electrifying.  Audiences are in for an emotional roller coaster of a ride as these two actors fearlessly bring this story to life … from the laughter of new love to the despair of the doomed relationship.”

“The Last 5 Years is raw yet eloquent,” says Sara Grant. “And by the end of Cathy and Jamie’s story you sit there torn between who to empathize with more. It’s a privilege to have the opportunity to work on this difficult material, especially with a talent like Ben.”

“Part of the challenge for me will be to disconnect myself from the music during Cathy’s songs,” Sandomir explains. “The play is perfectly designed to put the audience through a rollercoaster of emotions but as actors we have to remain disciplined to pull off this effect. It’s a little intimidating to work on such a small stage,” he continues, “However, I’ve found that nothing removes my pretenses like an audience member only a few feet away! And it’s so exciting to work with Sara. What a powerful voice!”

A live musical trio, consisting of Jason Buelow on piano, Brad Miller on bass, and Lehins Aragon on violin will accompany Grant and Sandomir.

Jason Robert Brown is the three-time Tony Award-winning composer and lyricist of Songs for a New World, Parade, 13, The Bridges of Madison County, and Honeymoon In Vegas. He performs around the world as a soloist and with his band, The Caucasian Rhythm Kings, with whom he recorded his CD Wearing Someone Else’s Clothes. A film of The Last Five Years opened in theaters in February 2015 to critical acclaim, and a film of 13 is currently in development. He has conducted his orchestral suite The Trumpet of the Swan with the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center, and he has taught acting and composition at universities and colleges across the US and the UK.

Evening Star Productions’ The Last Five Years will run from July 17 – August 2 (there will be a preview performance on July 16 at 8 pm) at Sol Theatre in Boca Raton. May 26, 2015 MARGATE, FL: They sold over 75 million records, nine of them gold. They had more Top Ten hits than the Beatles or Elvis. Until the advent of The Supremes, The Andrews Sisters – Patty, Maxene, and Laverne – were the most imitated of all female singing groups; they are still one of the best-selling female vocal groups of all time. Sisters of Swing (A Tribute to the Andrews Sisters), which will run from June 5th through July 12th at the Stage Door Theatre, details the fascinating journey of these three sisters from their early days in vaudeville through their success in ‘the big time’. The-andrew-sisters-05Sisters of Swing follows Patty, Maxene, and Laverne through their sometimes stormy personal relationships, their career, as well as several entertaining interactions with other celebrities of their era, including Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye. The show’s musical numbers include “Don’t Sit Under the Apple Tree”, “Three Little Fishies”, “Beer Barrel Polka”, Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive”, and of course, “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy”. The Andrews Sisters’ songbook is extensive, many of their songs instantly recognizable even almost 80 years after their first big ‘hit’ “Bei Mir Bist Du Schon” was released in 1937. Their music continues to influence major artists – Bette Midler and Christina Aguilera are two modern day singers who have channeled The Andrews Sisters at various points in their careers. Elvis Presley, Barry Manilow, Mel Tormé, The Pointer Sisters, The McGuire Sisters, and The Manhattan Transfer are among the many others who have been inspired by the sisters’ close harmonies, rhythms, and perfectly pitched tones.

“My father was in the air force in World War II,” explains the shows director, Dan Kelley. “He spent time in a German POW camp, so this era and these songs were very much a part of my early years – sitting around the record player and listening to my father’s stories and the Andrews Sisters,” he continues. “In fact, I think my Father had a little crush on Maxene! So this show really resonates with me.” Kelley has cast Malia Nicolini as Laverne and Molly Anne Ross as Patty. Both actresses are newcomers to Stage Door Theatre. Sara Ashley Teate, who was in last year’s Stage Door hit What’s New Pussycat will play Maxene. Brad Rakushin, recently seen in the theatre’s production of I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change, rounds out the cast. Musical direction (and piano) is by Michael Larsen, with Julie Jacbos on drums and Martha Spangler on bass. Set design is by Sean McClelland, and lighting design by Ardean Landhuis.

DELRAY BEACH, FL:  Into the Woods, the multi-award-winning (Tony Awards, Drama Desk Awards, Olivier Awards) musical by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine, skillfully interweaves several classic fairy tales into one epic story that shows what happens when things get real in the fairy-tale world. Entr’Acte Theatrix’ upcoming production of this acclaimed Broadway musical will run at the Delray Beach Center for the Arts’ Crest Theatre from June 18 through June 28th.

Sondheim and Lapine’s tale involves a baker and his wife who, unable to have the children they so badly desire, agree to complete a number of “errands” for a witch who promises to grant them their wish if they’re successful. During their journey, they encounter Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, Cinderella and Jack (of Beanstalk notoriety) – each of whom has their own wish. All the storybook characters discover that wishes granted often come with a hefty price.

Kevin Black, who directed Entr’Acte’s recent successful productions of Spamalot, Tommy, and The Rocky Horror Show has taken on the directorial and choreographic duties for Into the Woods with his usual enthusiasm:

“In 1988, I saw the national tour of Into the Woods with a group of friends, and I was mesmerized”, he says. “Here was a story of hope, morals and life lessons… It was my introduction into the world of Sondheim and I was hooked – the brilliant genius of Sondheim was unmistakable in this show. In 2012, I directed Side by Side by Sondheim at The Miami Stage Door Theatre and now I have the opportunity to direct Into the Woods for Entr’Acte Theatrix. This time, the objective is to create an entertaining evening of musical theatre that even an audience who has never experienced Sondheim will enjoy,” he continues. “We’re taking a very comedic approach to the show, brightening the tempos and creating a modern day look in set and costume design. We’ve assembled a stellar cast of talented actors who prove to me every day that tackling a mega Sondheim musical like Into the Woods may prove challenging, but oh so worth it.”

Entr’Acte Theatrix’ Into the Woods cast includes some familiar faces, along with a number of talented newcomers. Sharyn Peoples who played The Lady of the Lake in Entr’Acte Theatrix’ recent sold-out production of Spamalot will play The Witch, Justin Schneyer, who played Brad in Entr’Acte’s October 2014 production of The Rocky Horror Show will play The Baker, and John Costanzo (King Arthur in Spamalot) will play Cinderella’s father. Other returning cast members are Calvin Bankert (Jack), Sahid Pabon (Cinderella’s Prince), Brielle Lysaght (Stepsister), Christian Ortega (Rapunzel’s Prince), Jenna Paige Gagliardo (Jack’s Mother), Greg Halmos (The Wolf), Christi Oliver (Stepmother), and Rio Peterson (The Steward). Newcomers include Melissa Bibliowicz (Cinderella), Victoria Lauzun (The Baker’s Wife), Jen Chia (Little Red Riding Hood), Lindsey Johr (Rapunzel), Devin Tupler (Narrator), and Brittany Payne (Stepsister)

Entr’acte Theatrix is a not-for-profit, semi-professional, showcase company providing opportunities for emerging theatre artists, both on-stage and backstage. The fourteen year old company gives students of college or post-graduate programs on a professional trajectory with a goal of working in the profession a chance to gain experience in their area of training or interest. Entr’acte, as the name suggests, is the “next step,” from classroom to career, and provides the young theatre artist with one of his or her all-important first professional resume-building credits.
