Dear Friends and Patrons of the Stage Door Theatre:

As we approach our 25th year anniversary, I am reaching out to you, our loyal friends and supporters, with news about the Stage Door Theatre.

First the great news: everyone agrees, patrons and critics alike, that this past season has been filled with some of the strongest, most creative, most exuberant productions in our history. From classics such as “Evita,” “The Rothschilds,” “Most Happy Fella” and our current production of “Nine,” to our original shows such as “The Soul of Motor City,” “Vegas … A Night on the Strip” and our smash production of “Swing, Swing, Swing” (which we’re bringing back by popular demand on June 16, 2017), the quality of our shows has never been better!

Our next season is again filled with an amazing line-up … from the 40th anniversary production of “Saturday Night Fever” and a brand new, recent Broadway hit, Gershwin’s “Nice Work If You Can Get It,” to astounding new shows such as “Time Step,” “Hot Latin Rhythms,” and “Imagine … A Beatles Retrospective.”  Our 25th Anniversary Season will be historic!

As Broward County’s oldest regional theatre, we strive to provide excellence as a Not-For-Profit theatre at affordable prices for everyone.

However, due to dramatic changes in the cultural and financial climate, our ticket prices will increase to $48.00 per ticket on June 15, the beginning of our fiscal year.

We have been very resistant to this change, but contributing factors have made this adjustment absolutely necessary.  Due to the attempted dismantling of the National Endowment for the Arts, this year we lost a grant for $400,000.  Also, just a few weeks ago the State of Florida cut arts spending by 60%. Knowing these changes were looming possibilities, we offered short-term sales to meet these budget shortfalls without raising ticket prices.

Alas, it was has not been enough. We only succeeded in making you, our loyal patrons, feel taken advantage of and disenfranchised. That was never our intention.  In the future, there will be NO MORE DISCOUNTED SALE PRICES.

So, beginning June 15, 2017 our top ticket price will rise from $42.00 to $48.00 per ticket.  I encourage you, whether you are a single ticket buyer, subscriber, or group leader, to purchase before the price increase goes into effect.

If you haven’t checked out our newly-designed website, I encourage you to take a look. We have rolled out some new features.  Our website is http://www.StageDoorFL.org

Your donations, as always, are tax deductible, but it is now very easy contribute through our donation page.  We are dependent upon your support, and no donation is too small.  We are grateful for any contribution that allows us to continue to provide the kind of programming that is so important to all of us.  To make a tax-deductible donation to the Stage Door Theatre, please click here: https://boxoffice.printtixusa.com/stagedoor/donate

We also offer a flex pass ticket option for $150.00.  You may purchase 4 shows that can be used at your discretion and save $42.00!

Even with the price increase, we remain the most reasonable ticket for professional theatre in the area.  We hope you, our loyal patrons, will understand this has not been an easy decision for us, but it had to made in order to preserve our historic theatre company.  Our primary mission is the preservation of the Great American Musical.  I hope you join with me in that, and in celebrating our 25th year Anniversary.

With Warmest Regards,

Dee Wilson-Bunn

Nine
April 28 – June 11

“An abundant musical, one which gleefully expands the limits of the theatre. A startling act of the imagination, independence and daring; and, hence, a show to treasure.” – WCBS-TV

April 24, 2017

MARGATE, FL:  The multiple Tony Award-winning musical Nine will open in Theatre 1 at Stage Door Theatre on April 28, and run through June 11.

Based on Federico Fellini’s Academy Award-winning film 8½, Nine focuses on celebrated film director Guido Contini, who is dealing with a mid-life crisis, numerous faltering relationships, including a failing marriage, and his increasingly futile attempts to come up with a plot for his next movie after a number of box office flops. The original Broadway production won five Tony Awards in 1982, including Best Musical.

Nine was originally created and written by Maury Yeston as a class project in Lehman Engel’s BMI Music Theatre Workshop in 1973.  As a teenager he had seen Fellini’s iconic film and was intrigued by its themes.  Yeston, in a 1982 interview in the New York Times explained:  “I looked at the screen and said, ‘That’s me….I still believed in all the dreams and ideals of what it was to be an artist, and here was a movie about an artist – an artist in trouble. It became an obsession.”

Peter J. Loewy

Stage Door’s production will be directed by Peter J. Loewy, who has directed the show previously – at his own Forum Theatre in Metuchen, New Jersey:  “Nine is a show that’s rarely done – it will be somewhat of a departure from Stage Door normal fare,” Loewy says.  “It has a soaring score by Maury Yeston, and the source material, Fellini’s autobiographical film 8½,  is a fascinating look at one man’s retrospective journey through his life, his career, and at the women he loved, loves, and hopes to love again.”

Loewy is recreating the staging from his original, Forum Theatre production of Nine with additional choreography by Kevin Black. David Nagy is the show’s Musical Director, Lighting Design is by Dean Landhuis, Set Design is by Michael McClain, and Costume Design is by Jerry Sturdefant.

Nine will star Paul O’Donnell as the troubled Guido.  O’Donnell has taken on an unusual ‘double-duty’ in this production – he is also Stage Door Theatre’s Operations Director.  Elizabeth Sackett will play Guido’s wife Luisa,  Ellie Pattison his agent Liliane La Fleur, Alexandra Milbrath his mistress Carla, and Victoria Lauzun his muse, Claudia Nardi.  Other cast members include Emily Freeman, Kat Gold, Dalia Aleman, Sandi Stock, Rebeca Diaz, Alexandra Garcia, Melody Lieberman, Hilleah Neve, Stephanny Noria, Caterina Randazzo,  Alexandra Van Hasselt, and Lara Williams.

Nine is produced in part by a grant from the City of Margate Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA).

Nine will run from April 28 – June 11 at Stage Door Theatre. The theatre is located at 8036 Sample Road, in Margate.  Tickets for Nine are $38 – $42; $16 student tickets are also available.  Tickets may be purchased at the Broward Stage Door Theatre box office at 954-344-7765 or on line at  www.stagedoorfl.org

MARGATE, FL:  Stage Door Theatre will present the darkly comedic musical, No Way to Treat a Lady beginning April 14th.  The production will run through May 28th in the popular Margate venue’s Theatre 2.

A blend of devilish humor, romance, murder, and music,  No Way to Treat a Lady features a publicity crazed actor turned serial killer, and the detective who pursues him: Actor Christopher “Kit” Gill, and Detective Morris Brummell have a lot in common – both dream of being headliners in the New York Times, and both are contending with difficult and overbearing mothers.  Gill’s mother issues lead to murder, and Brummell’s to struggles to find independence, love, and of course, a murderer.

The production, directed by Peter J. Loewy, will feature James Hansen as Kit Gill and Dustin Cunningham as Morris Brummell.  Andrea Arvanigian and Kimberly Abrams round out the cast.

Peter J. Loewy

“It’s a fun, funny, and clever show,” Loewy says. “It has a weirdly likeable homicidal maniac, a loveable if somewhat lost hero,  and an interesting take on the relationship between sons and their mothers. And the score is pure Broadway musical comedy.”

Playwright, composer, lyricist Douglas J. Cohen is the recipient of the Fred Ebb Award for Musical Theatre Songwriting,  two Richard Rodgers Awards, a Jonathan Larson Grant, the Gilman & Gonzalez-Falla Theatre Foundation Award, and the inaugural Noel Coward Prize.

No Way to Treat a Lady will run from April 14 – May 28 at Stage Door Theatre. The theatre is located at 8036 Sample Road, in Margate.

February 24 – April 9

“Life is a blank canvas, and you need to throw all the paint on it you can.”
~ Danny Kaye

February 21, 2017

MARGATE, FL:   Stage Door Theatre will present The Kid From Brooklyn: The Danny Kaye Story, from February 24 though April 9 in the larger of their two theatres.

Based on the turbulent and triumphant life of the multi-talented singer, actor, comedian, and philanthropist,  this intimate musical portrayal chronicles Danny Kaye’s career and his relationships on and off the stage – from an undisciplined improvisational comic to his success under the guidance of his wife, Sylvia Fine.

The Kid From Brooklyn: The Danny Kaye Story includes many of Kaye’s signature songs, including “Tchaikovsky,” “By Jingo,” “Minnie the Moocher” and “Inchworm”, and features the work of songwriters Kurt Weill, Ira Gershwin, Rodgers and Hart, Frank Loesser and Cole Porter, and of course, Sylvia Fine.

Peter J. Loewy

Peter J. Loewy

The production will be directed by Peter J. Loewy, with musical direction by David Nagy.  Loewy, who owns and operates the Forum Theatre in Metuchen,  New Jersey,  directed three productions in South Florida in 2016, two for Stage Door Theatre, and one for Pigs Do Fly  Productions.  All three were Carbonell Recommended.

Loewy has cast Joshua Kolb as Danny Kaye, and Kimberly Abrams as Sylvia Fine.

Kolb is pleased and excited to have been chosen to portray the iconic entertainer: “If Danny Kaye had not been born,” a Hollywood writer once observed, “no one could possibly have invented him. It would have been stretching credibility far past the breaking point.” Kolb quotes.  “Telling the story of such a man, therefore is stretching me just as far as an actor. This opportunity is comfortably the biggest challenge I have ever attempted, and I only hope to give the audience as entertaining a remembrance of the man as they, and he, deserve.”

ds-2“During the rehearsal process for this show, Sylvia Fine became a personal hero of mine,” says Kimberly Adams. “She was a shockingly brilliant woman who did it all – she was Danny Kaye’s wife, the mother of their child, his career manager, and the composer/lyricist of all of his most famous songs. She is the reason Danny Kaye became a household name, and it’s truly an honor to bring her to life on stage.”

Brad Rakushin and Ashley Brooke will play various characters throughout the play, including Samuel Goldwyn, Cole Porter, Billy Rose, Laurence Olivier, Eve Arden, Kitty Carlisle, and Vivien Leigh.

The Kid From Brooklyn will run from February 24 – April 9 at Stage Door Theatre. The theatre is located at 8036 Sample Road, in Margate.

Tickets for The Kid From Brooklyn are $38 – $42; $16 student tickets are also available.  Tickets may be purchased at the Broward Stage Door Theatre box office at 954-344-7765 or on line at  www.stagedoorfl.org

“Funnier than The Producers!”  David Jay Bernstein’s Mother

February 6, 2017

MARGATE, FL:  Stage Door Theatre will present David Jay Bernstein’s delightful comedy,The Bris, The Bar Mitzvah, & Beyond, beginning February 10th.  The production will run through March 26th in the popular Margate venue’s Theatre 2.

“And, verily, The Lord said unto Abraham: “Cut the off the foreskin of thy organ as a covenant of obedience.”  And Abraham did replieth: “You’re kidding, right?” Playwright David Jay Bernstein has long wondered what the ‘guest of honor’ at a Bris ceremony would be thinking if he knew what was going on.

“And on the eighth day after his birth, little Max Shapiro begins a life-long conversation with his dad, Gary, by asking the age-old question: “What do you think you’re doing with that knife?”  The Bris sets the stage for the Shapiro’s lifetime together,” Bernstein explains, “As we stop to visit with them at some of the rites of passage that define the relationships between Jewish fathers and sons.”

“The Bris, The Bar Mitzvah, & Beyond is, I feel, actually a drama with some very funny moments in it,” says the show’s director, Randy Brenner. “In fact, I’ve been referring to it as a ‘dramedy’. It’s about relationships – and from a director’s point of view, it’s always a challenge to do a play with three characters and bring those three characters’ lives to life on stage. At the same time, you try to stay true to the author’s vision.”

Brenner has cast Jonathan Brett as Max, Ben Prayz as Gary, and Emily Freeman as Lori.  Emily recently placed first in the National Society of Arts and Letters Musical Theatre Competition.

The Bris, The Bar Mitzvah, & Beyond will run from February 10 – March 26 at Stage Door Theatre. The theatre is located at 8036 Sample Road, in Margate.

Tickets for The Bris, The Bar Mitzvah, & Beyond are $38 – $42; $16 student tickets are also available.  Tickets may be purchased at the Broward Stage Door Theatre box office at 954-344-7765 or on line at  www.stagedoorfl.org

“Music in “Fella” isn’t just ornament; it’s oxygen, the way it is in operas by Puccini, Strauss, and even Wagner. The score itself keeps wordlessly defining the characters, pushing them and us forward to new awareness.”  Ben Brantley ~ New York Times

December 27, 2016

MARGATE, FL:  Stage Door Theatre will follow their recent hit production of Sweet Charity with Frank Loesser’s award-winning musical The Most Happy Fella.  The production will open on December 30th, and run through February 5th in the theatre’s larger auditorium.

Loesser (Guys and Dolls, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying) based this touching, dramatic, and intensely personal love story of a May-December romance between an aging Italian grape farmer and a much younger woman on the play They Knew What They Wanted by Sidney Howard. He read the play in 1952 and felt it had ‘musical potential’; however, it took him four years to complete the musical, which opened on Broadway on May 3, 1956.

Andy Rogow“The Most Happy Fella isn’t a title that is as familiar to audiences as others from the Golden Age of musical theatre, though it has several very famous songs such as “Standing on the Corner”, “My Heart is So Full of You”, “Somebody, Somewhere”, and “Big D”,” says the production’s Carbonell Award-winning director, Andy Rogow.   “What makes this show so interesting to me is that it really is an opera. There are few dialogue scenes so the story progresses through one lush musical number to the next. I often get goosebumps listening to the cast sing through the score. They sound gorgeous.”

In his book The World of Musical Comedy, Stanley Green noted that the musical is “one of the most ambitiously operatic works ever written for the Broadway theatre.” And Loesser said “I may give the impression this show has operatic tendencies. If people feel that way – fine. Actually all it has is a great frequency of songs. It’s a musical with music.”

shay-weinbergShay Weinberg plays the show’s female lead, Rosabella: “She’s a tough yet romantic, girl next door who is not trapped in the bindings of an ingénue role,” Weinberg says.  “Rosabella is a blast to play. I love that I get to be a soprano and indulge in a strong character complex.”

Other cast members include  Kyle Yampiro as Tony, Kyle Pressley as Joey, Lisa Franklin as Marie, Dean Landhuis as Doc, Ellington Berg as Herman, and Kimberly Abrams as Cleo.

The Most Happy Fella Trivia Note:  The original production was partially bankrolled by Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz.  The 1957 I Love Lucy episode “Lucy’s Night In Town” focuses on the Ricardos and Mertzes going to a sold-out performance of The Most Happy Fella. Three songs from the show are heard in scenes showing the characters sitting in the theater. At one point Fred Mertz is inspired by the show’s title to remark, “The guy is not married!”

The Most Happy Fella will run from December 30 – February 5 at Stage Door Theatre. The theatre is located at 8036 Sample Road, in Margate.

Tickets for The Most Happy Fella are $38 – $42; $16 student tickets are also available.  Tickets may be purchased at the Broward Stage Door Theatre box office at 954-344-7765 or on line at  www.stagedoorfl.org

“Las Vegas looks the way you’d imagine heaven must look at night.”
– Chuck Palahniuk, in “Invisible Monster”

November 29, 2016

MARGATE, FL:  From Soul to Swing, Kevin Black’s recent productions – created exclusively for Stage Door Theatre – have had audiences on their feet and dancing.  The Soul of Motor City, his tribute to the music of Motown, which was extended several times over this past summer, and Swing! Swing! Swing! his lovingly assembled compendium of Jazz and Swing classics were both recommended for Carbonell nominations.

Black’s newest creation, Vegas: A Night on the Strip will premiere at Stage Door on December 9th, and run through January 22nd.

Vegas: A Night on the Strip dives into the rich history that made the city of Las Vegas a hot destination for entertainers from around the world.  Featuring music from some of Vegas’ most memorable icons – from the Rat Pack and Elvis to the modern-day Cirque-type spectacles; from showgirls to headliners; from high-rollers to high-flying acrobatics…  “with maybe a Vegas wedding thrown in!” says Black.

Kevin Black

Kevin Black

“When most people think of Vegas, they immediately remember the likes of Frank, Sammy, and Dean…The Rat Pack,” Black continues.  “However, Vegas: A Night on the Strip is so much more. I decided to tell the history of ‘The Entertainment Capitol of The World’, through the construction and implosion of those iconic hotels on The Strip, and the entertainment that graced their stages. Our six vocalists pay tribute to this great city with nods to numerous Vegas icons – not only the Rat Pack, but legends like Celine Dion, Elton John, Tom Jones and Wayne Newton, and the lavish cirque -style shows that dominate The Strip today.

“The creative “workshop” process is my favorite,” Black explains when asked about the evolution of the production. “Arranging new ways to present some old classics and seldom heard gems is so satisfying. Our Musical Director/Arranger Ben Bagby is a master at this and you’ll see his work shine more than ever in this show.”

The six vocalists Black has chosen to bring his vision of Vegas to life are Daniel Bourgoin, Jar’Davion Brown, Arlene Coutee, Chantal Deshaies, Gabrielle Graham, and Brad Rakushin.  Brown and Graham both wowed audiences in The Soul of Motor City.  Brad Rakushin was featured in Stage Door’s recent productions of Sisters of Swing and I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change.  Specialty artists Cherrise Pawlak and Derick Pierson round out the cast of eight.

Vegas: A Night on the Strip will run from December 9 – January 22 at Stage Door Theatre. The theatre is located at 8036 Sample Road, in Margate.

Neil Simon’s sparklingly clever script, loosely adapted from Fellini’s “Nights in Cabiria”, follows Charity (and some of her very unusual friends) through a series of misadventures, and documents her constant and unfortunate tendency to offer her heart to the wrong man.  Simon updated the story from Rome in the 1950s to New York City in the 1960s while the hippie culture was just emerging and taxi dancers were quickly becoming relics.

“Sweet Charity has always been one of my favorite musicals,” says the show’s Carbonell Award-winning director, Michael Leeds.  With a score by Cy Coleman and Dorothy Fields and a book by Neil Simon, the show is sheer entertainment from start to finish.”

Coleman and Fields’ Tony Award-winning musical’s score includes songs that have become classics in America’s musical theatre lexicon, including Big Spender, If My Friends Could See Me Now, Baby, Dream Your Dream, and Too Many Tomorrows.

“It’s a large cast and it calls for a strong ensemble, (17!) able to handle the Fosse-esque numbers”, Leeds continues.   “Luckily, we’ve got a terrific choreographer, Danny Durr who honors Fosse while still making these numbers his own.   Of course, there’s no Sweet Charity without a – well – sweet Charity and Kristina Huegel is a triple threat who will knock you out.  As you can tell, I’m very excited about this show!” he says.

Kristina Huegel will be joined on stage by Richard Lafleur as Oscar Lindquist, Rick Hvizdak as Vidal, Larry Buzzeo as Herman, and Rasheem Ford as Daddy Brubeck.  Also in the cast are Vickie Anderson, Brody Awalt, Matthew Blum, Jerel Brown, Keagan Tanner Cerny, Jonathan Eisele, Nicole Kinzel, Natalie McPherson, Eddie Morales, Kaylee Olson,  Melissa Rapelje,  Casey Sacco, Sierra Stacy, Eduardo Uribe, Imani Pearl Williams, and Kelly Ziegler.

Along with choreographer Durr, who is currently starring in Stage Door’s Carbonell Recommended Swing! Swing! Swing!, Sweet Charity’s production team includes Dave Nagy as the production’s musical director and pianist,  Ardean Landhuis as lighting designer, Rushnay Henry as sound designer, and Michael McClain, who has designed the set.

Sweet Charity will run from November 4 – December at Stage Door Theatre. The theatre is located at 8036 Sample Road, in Margate.

Tickets for Sweet Charity are $38 – $42; $16 student tickets are also available.  Tickets may be purchased at the Broward Stage Door Theatre box office at 954-344-7765 or on line at  www.stagedoorfl.org

MARGATE, FL:  Kevin Black’s recent hit production, The Soul of Motor City, had audiences on their feet and dancing in the aisles.  The show received a Carbonell recommendation, and was extended numerous times past its originally scheduled closing date.  It’s no wonder then, that Stage Door Theatre’s Executive Producer Derelle Bunn has asked Black to develop another brand new show for her ever-popular theatre.

Black’s Swing! Swing! Swing! will have its world premiere at Stage Door on October 7th.  The show is scheduled to run through November 20th.

“Swing music has its roots in Jazz, beginning in New Orleans and Kansas City then eventually moving its way across the nation.” Black explains.  “Once it reached New York City, the phenomenon quickly became the pop music of its day. Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller took the jazz infused sounds of George Gershwin and Louis Armstrong and invented a genre that featured a strong drum and bass line, creating that unmistakable rhythm that lead to the high energy dance styles of the jitterbug and the jive.

“Swing! Swing! Swing! pays tribute to these Jazz and Swing classics, told through various thematic groupings of songs and artists,” he continues. “That Big Band sound, normally created by a 20 plus piece swing band, will be reimagined by utilizing live piano, bass and drums, while incorporating the cast as the brass section through rhythmic vocals and harmonized scatting. The show is set in an Art Deco style club, masterfully envisioned by Michael McClain. We are certain the more senior patrons of Stage Door will thoroughly enjoy reliving these timeless classics. Our hope is to bring this magnificent musical style to a new generation of audiences.”

Just a few of the classic pieces that will be revisited include ‘Tuxedo Junction’,’In The Mood”, ‘Stardust’, ‘Stormy Weather’, ‘I Got Rhythm’, and of course ‘It Don’t Mean a Thing.’

“…it is interesting, in parts very witty, has a certain moral force and,
best of all, it has style.
”  Clive Barnes, NY Times

August 30, 2016

MARGATE, FL:   Stage Door Theatre’s September production is a Tony Award-winning musical based on the fascinating story of one family’s rise from the ghettos of late eighteenth century Germany to domination of the European financial community and the loftiest echelons of society.  The Rothschilds will open on September 2nd and run through October 16th in the theatre’s large auditorium.

The Rothschilds has been called ‘one of the boldest book musicals of its time; a heartfelt testimony to family, dignity, honor, and unflinching tenacity.’ (Music Theatre International) The musical was the final collaboration between Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick (Fiddler on the Roof, She Loves Me); the book was by Sherman Yellen. The Rothschilds was nominated for nine Tony Awards, winning two.

Based on the book The Rothschilds, by Frederic Morton, the musical tells the story of “shrewd, charismatic, resourceful and ambitious Mayer Rothschild and his five sons [as they] struggle to overcome the prejudice of late eighteenth century European society …and build a family banking …On the way, they come to dominate European finance, help fund Napoleon’s defeat, and secure a Declaration of Rights for their people from the Crowned Heads of State. It’s truly Europe’s most famous rags-to-riches story.” (Music Theatre International)
