BOCA RATON, FL:  If theatre audiences are looking for travel and adventure this holiday season, they need venture no farther than to Sol Theatre in Boca Raton, where Sol Children Theatre will present a brand new musical adaptation of Jules Verne’s classic tale, Around the World in 80 Days.  From London to Bombay and Yokohama to San Francisco; through typhoons, out-of- control trains, and into the deepest reaches of the imagination, this family friendly adventure will delight audiences of all ages.  The production will run from December 8th through December 23rd in the popular ‘black box’ theatre.

Phileas Fogg has bet he can race around the world – from London and back to London – in a mere 80 days, but the pressure’s on and time is running out. At his side, a band of quirky adventurers. At their heels, a relentless Scotland Yard detective. At stake, surviving utterly fantastic adventures across India, China, Japan and America – beating the clock – and winning the bet.

The production will be directed by Rosalie Grant, Sol’s dynamic founder and artistic director:

“When I discovered this version of Around the World in 80 Days I instantly knew two things:  Sol had to stage it, and I had to direct it!” says Grant.  “I’ve always loved the story, and this version is wonderfully funny, and the music is very catchy!  It is a perfect family theatre show with enough laughs for adults as well.  I am having the time of my life directing an amazing cast of young actors in addition to adults who are my colleagues and friends.” 

Around the World in 80 Days’ combination of adult and child actors include Murphy Hayes as Phileas Fogg, Christian Matthiesen (L’Ambiance – Virtual School) as Passepartout, Faith Alfieri (Spanish River Christian School) as Inspector Fix, and Renèe Elizabeth Turner as Aouda.

“As soon as I heard the music from this show I knew I wanted to be part of it,” says Around the World’s Philias Fogg, Murphy Hayes. “The fact that it will kick off Sol Children Theatre’s Sweet 16 Season is even more exciting. The talent of the younger actors in this show and the amount of dedication they bring challenges us adult actors to bring our best to this amazing ensemble,” he continues.  “It’s a fun family show for everyone to enjoy together…I think people may even find themselves humming a tune or two on their way home!”

Renèe Elizabeth Turner agrees: “I am beyond honored to be a part of this exciting production inspired by the beloved Jules Verne novel,” she enthuses. “This is a show about adventure, self-discovery, and having faith in what you can achieve even when the odds are against you. The role of Princess Aouda is one that continually proves to be far more than a traditional female romantic lead. She is a woman who is loyal, caring, well educated, and strong; even while living in a culture where the traditions of human sacrifice and arranged marriages are the social norm. Thus, these unfortunate circumstances force her into the confines of never knowing what it truly means to freely fall in love. It is an absolute joy to present the musical version of this timeless classic with this incredible cast.”

Other young cast members include Kylie Lawrence (Boca High), Ava Cavasos (Henderson School), Kate Finkelstein, sisters Megan and Samantha Mascaro (Paseos – Virtual School), Samantha Marchena (Morikami Park Elementary School), Megan Enriquez (Grandview Prep).  ‘Adult’ cast members include Jenna Wyatt, Jennipher Whitcomb, and Sara Elizabeth Grant.

Around the World in 80 Days’ Musical Director is Anthony Campisi, with choreography by Sara Elizabeth Grant. The show’s Scenic Designer is Kate McVay; Costume Designers are MJ Baum and Briana Earhart; Lighting Design and set construction is by Ardean Landhuis.  The production’s Stage Manager is Sean Smyth.

Boca Raton’s Sol Children Theatre is a not-for-profit theatre organization founded by veteran director and actor Rosalie Grant sixteen years ago.  The company’s mission is to provide children with a safe, secure, and highly professional theatre experience.  Those children in then in turn provide quality theatre experiences for audiences.

Avi Hoffman’s Too Jewish? premiered Off-Broadway at New York’s Houseman Theatre in 1994 and has been presented thousands of times all over the world, as well as on the national PBS network. Old Jews Telling Jokes showcases five actors in a comedy that pays tribute to and reinvents classic jokes of the past and present.   It celebrates the rich tradition of Jewish humor “and all the rabbis, complaining wives, fed-up husbands, patience-challenged physicians, gossiping ladies and competitive men” populating it. The humor can be suggestive (sometimes even raunchy) as the ‘Old Jews’ make fun of themselves as well as followers of every other religion.

In this futuristic capitalist dystopia, an outbreak of disease killed millions and resulted in heavily regulated human interaction (and intimacy). Anjali has a government-issued job as the madam to a sex robot. The Rocky Horror Show is an outrageous assemblage of – and humorous tribute to – the most stereotypical science fiction and horror movies, Marvel comics, Frankie Avalon/Annette Funicello outings and rock ‘n’ roll of every vintage. The play (upon which the classic film The Rocky Horror Picture Show is based) has grown from an experimental production originally produced in a small London theatre in June 1973, to a cult phenomenon with fans world-wide.  The musical tells the story of a newly engaged couple who, when caught in a storm, find refuge in the home of a decidedly unusual scientist who is madly working towards unveiling his latest and greatest creation.

When James is sent by his conniving aunts to chop down their old fruit tree, he discovers a magic potion that results in a tremendous peach… and launches a journey of enormous proportions. BOCA RATON, FL:  Sol Theatre will play host to The Mad Hatter, The Queen of Hearts, Tweedledum, Tweedledee, and of course The White Rabbit, when Sol Children Theatre presents Seth Trucks’ adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s magical classic, Alice in Wonderland.  The production will open on August 10th, and run through August 20th at the popular Boca Raton venue.  Alice and her friends will then move to the Delray Beach Children’s Garden for three special sunset performances on August 24th, 25th, and 26th.

“This is an original adaptation written specifically for Sol Theatre the actors involved in the production,” explains the show’s director, Seth Trucks.   “Our co-director, Savannah Rootes, is a recent graduate of Sol Children’s Troupe and she has returned to pass on her knowledge and passion to our newer members.

“We have enough enthusiasm to power Boca for a year!” Trucks continues. “Our production will balance a faithful approach to Carroll’s language, with a ton of new twists and takes on Wonderland and its strange inhabitants.”

Alice in Wonderland – originally titled Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland – was first published in 1865 and immediately became a publishing sensation, beloved by children and adults alike.  The book has never been out of print, and has been translated into close to 180 languages.  In Trucks’ adaptation, Alice finds a glove belonging to a White Rabbit, and wanting to return it, she follows him down a rabbit hole, into a fantastical Wonderland, where the Queen of Hearts rules over a peculiar assortment of creatures, and Alice’s adventures become ‘curiouser and curiouser’.

Alice in Wonderland’s Alice will be played by three actors:  Eden Wexler, Mandy Feuerman and Zoe Alarcon; Noah Fineman has been cast as The White Rabbit, Ava Cavasos as The Mad Hatter, and Brooke Hall as The Queen of Hearts.  Other cast members include Jamie Feuerman, Zoe Wexler, Addison Wexler, Zoe Alarcon, Sami Mascaro, Kimberly Wilkinson, Faith Alfieri, Isabella Welch, Natalie Macadar, Emma and Kylie Lawrence, Alan and Amalia Hasselman, Violet Zeiders, Olivia Shiver, Celia Roberts, and Rylee Siegel.

Seth Trucks studied experimental theatre at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, and classical theatre at the British American Drama Academy and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts.  In New York, Seth performed with Fractured Atlas, Synaesthetic Theatre, and worked as a freelance fight choreographer.  He also spent five years as a writer/performer with the New York based comedy troupe, The Six Characters.  In Florida, Seth has performed with the Palm Beach Shakespeare Festival, Outré Theatre Company and Entr’Acte Theatrix.  He recently received glowing reviews in Evening Star Productions’ Waiting for Godot, and is currently starring in Outré Theatre Company’s 1984.

Boca Raton’s Sol Children Theatre is a not-for-profit theatre organization founded by veteran director and actor Rosalie Grant sixteen years ago.  The company’s mission is to provide children with a safe, secure, and highly professional theatre experience.  Those children in then in turn provide quality theatre experiences for audiences.

BOCA RATON, FL:  Evening Star Productions will present Samuel Beckett’s existential masterpiece, Waiting for Godot, at Sol Theatre in Boca Raton, from April 21 – May 7, 2017. (There will be a preview performance on April 20.)

On a barren stretch of road, near a single nondescript tree, two vagabond men wait for someone or something named Godot.  Their hope seems to be that the mysterious Godot will change their lives for the better.  Two strangers arrive, one man at the end of another’s rope. A boy also appears and disappears.

The simplicity of the play’s description belies its depth and complexity. Critics, scholars, and audiences have read numerous interpretations into Beckett’s work – philosophical, religious, political, and social references have been cited and discussed since the play’s world premiere in Paris in 1953 – it was Beckett’s first professionally produced play – and its North American premiere at Florida’s Coconut Grove Playhouse in 1956.  In a poll conducted by the British Royal National Theatre in 1990, Waiting for Godot was voted the ‘most significant English language play of the 20th century.’

Evening Star Productions’ Artistic Director Rosalie Grant will direct the production, with Sara Grant as assistant director, Waiting for Godot will feature Lito Beccera as Vladimir, Seth Trucks as Estragon, Skye Whitcomb as Pozzo, Christopher Mitchell as Lucky, and Carsten Kjaerulff as a boy.

Scenic Art for Waiting for Godot is by Kate McVay, Lighting Design, Set Design and Construction is by Ardean Landhuis, Costume Design is by Briana Earhart and MJ Baum, and Sound Design is by Christian Cooper.

“There are so many reasons I chose Samuel Beckett’s masterpiece Waiting for Godot for Evening Star’s fourth season … and why I chose to direct it,” she explains.  “The primary reason is that Beckett’s genius lay in creating a work that still speaks to audiences, particularly in troubled times.  Waiting for Godot seems to have a unique resonance during times of social and political crisis. As a modernist existential meditation it can at first appear bleak: “They give birth astride of a grave,” Pozzo says. “The light gleams an instant, then it’s night once more.”  It is funny yet poetic, and reveals humanity’s talents for stoicism, companionship, and keeping going.  There is no drama more stripped down and essential than Godot, whose mysteries Beckett refused to elucidate beyond “the laughter and the tears”.  I love the notion that after our Godot closes in another hundred years Vladimir and Estragon will still be on a stage somewhere – still waiting for Godot.”

BOCA RATON, FL:  Evening Star Productions will present the South Florida premiere of Brad Alexander and Adam Mathias’ award-winning contemporary musical, See Rock City and Other Destinations, at Sol Theatre in Boca Raton, from January 13 – 29, 2017. With a book full of humor and humanity, and a score that incorporates pop, rock, folk and more, each of the musical’s loosely linked stories builds on the last to create a vivid travelogue of Americans learning to overcome their fears and expectations in order to connect:

A wanderer believes his destiny is written on rooftops along the North Carolina Interstate; a young man yearns to connect with intelligent life in Roswell, New Mexico; a woman at the Alamo steps out of the shadow of her grandparents’ idealized romance to take a chance on love; three estranged sisters cruise to Glacier Bay to scatter their father’s ashes; two high school boys face unexpected fears in the Coney Island Spook House; and a terrified bride-to-be ponders taking the leap… over Niagara Falls.

See Rock City & Other Destinations won the 2011 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Book of a Musical and was nominated for Outstanding Lyrics, Outstanding Music, Outstanding Direction, Outstanding Lighting, and Outstanding Musical. The musical also received the 2007 Jerry Bock Award and the 2008 Richard Rodgers Award for Excellence in Musical Theatre Writing.

Rosalie GrantEvening Star’s Artistic Director Rosalie Grant chose Geoffrey Short to direct the production: “While designing Evening Star’s 4th season I felt it was important to bring a variety of creativity to the table,” she explains. “I’d had several discussions with Geoffrey Short over the past year, and having witnessed his work as actor and director, I felt he would be a perfect fit to direct for Evening Star.  Geoffrey knew instantly he wanted to bring See Rock City to Sol Theatre and Evening Star … it felt like a perfect fit of cast size, instrumentation and story for Sol’s intimate setting.  And from what I’m hearing from the cast as they navigate these early rehearsals it truly is a perfect fit!”

My Son the Waiter:  A Jewish Tragedy is the story of Zimmerman’s struggle to fulfill his dream and ‘make it’ as a comedic actor in New York.  One-part standup, one-part theatrical, and all parts uproarious My Son the Waiter:  A Jewish Tragedy has garnered rave reviews wherever it has played, including sold out runs at the Northshore Theatre in Skokie, Illinois, and the George Street Playhouse in New Brunswick, New Jersey, this past summer.

Every mother dreams her children will grow up to be happy, healthy, and successful.  Every Jewish mother secretly – and often not so secretly –  adds specifics to her wish:  A doctor, a lawyer, a dentist, or these days, a Silicon Valley tycoon would make her very happy.  Brad Zimmerman’s mother has finally adapted to her ‘actor-waiter’ son’s career choice and financial situation: “If all goes well, I think Brad is going to buy a bookcase,” she boasts to her friends.
brad_zimmermanBrad Zimmerman has paid his dues.  He spent 29 years “temporarily” waiting tables in New York, all the while chasing a career in acting and comedy.  He tells of his pursuit, along with stories about his childhood, family, and misbegotten love life with warmth, wit, self-deprecating humor, and wicked charm, and combines his years of training as an actor with his innate comedic talent.

And of course Zimmerman also examines the trials and tribulations of waiting on tables – particularly for someone not exactly invested in that career, and with little tolerance for persnickety diners:

“I don’t want 60 questions, get to the point!” he said he would tell restaurant patrons when he sat down for a recent interview for The New York Times. He joked that if diners prefaced their orders by saying they were in a hurry he would say “So go!” He says he did enjoy some of the bantering he did with diners, and often tried out material on them, however there were also ‘the bossy customers who would snap their fingers to get his attention… and the health-food obsessives who elaborately customized their orders and button-holed him over ingredients.’  As he says in My Son the Waiter: A Jewish Tragedy, he was convinced his epitaph would read “I’ll be right with you.”

His perseverance and hard work eventually did pay off, and Zimmerman went on to act – he had a small part in “The Sopranos” playing Johnny Sack’s lawyer – and to become the opening act for a number of well-known entertainers, including George Carlin, Brad Garrett, Dennis Miller, Julio Iglesias, and Joan Rivers who said “I’ve had three great opening acts in my lifetime:  Billy Crystal, Garry Shandling, and Brad Zimmerman.”

Zimmerman worked on the script for My Son the Waiter:  A Jewish Tragedy for 9 years and performed it in small venues all over the country, including a stint at Stage Door Theatre in Margate, where it came to the attention of producers Dana Matthow and Philip Roy (Respect: A Musical Journey of Women, Old Jews Telling Jokes, My Mother’s Italian, My Father’s Jewish & I’m in Therapy). Since then My Son the Waiter:  A Jewish Tragedy spent 2 years at Off-Broadway’s Stage 72 at the Triad Theatre in New York, and has toured the USA from coast to coast, including a very successful run at The Palm Beaches Theatre in Manalapan last season.

BOCA RATON, FL: The beloved tale of the penny-pinching miser, Ebenezer Scrooge, and the awakening of his long-forgotten festive spirit is a seasonal tradition for many. Sol Children Theatre will revisit Charles Dickens’ ghostly tale of the Past, Present, and Future when they present Brian Way’s faithful adaptation of Dickens’ timeless classic. The production will run from December 2nd through December 18th at Sol Theatre in Boca Raton.

First published on December 19th, 1843, Dickens’ novella immediately met with critical and popular acclaim, and has never been out of print. A Christmas Carol illustrates the author’s concerns about time, family, and society’s ills; however Dickens also used his own humiliating childhood experiences, along with his sympathy for the poor, and various fairy tales and seasonal stories to enhance his tale.

chris mitchellCharles Dickens’ The Christmas Carol will be directed by Christopher Mitchell, and will feature a cast composed of adults and children.

“With it paying homage to both a cherished story and treasured holiday, I’m thrilled to be directing this production,” Mitchell says.  “It’s eerie spooky undertones and touching story line have been great fun to play with. Everyone loves a good ghost story and a great Christmas story. And with this play, you get both!”

Director Mitchell’s adult cast includes Jim Gibbons as Ebenezer Scrooge;  Murphy Hayes as Jacob Marley and Joe;  Robert Fabano as Bob Cratchit. Other adult cast members include Sara Grant, Barry Katz, Fern Katz, Constance Moreau, Jenna Wyatt, Jeremy Wershoven, Amy Coker, John Maher, Neil Evangelista, Shafer Ross, and Melanie Leivers. Younger cast members include Eden Wexler as Tiny Tim, as well as Faith Alfieri, and Sabrina Lipp.

Boca Raton’s Sol Children Theatre is a not-for-profit theatre organization founded by veteran director and actor Rosalie Grant fifteen years ago.  The company’s mission is to provide children with a safe, secure, and highly professional theatre experience.  Those children in then in turn provide quality theatre experiences for audiences.  In this production of Charles Dickens’ The Christmas Carol, Sol students will have the opportunity to work with adult professional actors as well as with their contemporaries.

He and Margaret Faulkes, in founding the Theatre Center in London, introduced the concept of informal theatrical performances in school, and the expansion of arts education. In his lifetime he wrote over 50 plays, including Pinocchio, The Mirrorman, and Sleeping Beauty, as well as the renowned text Audience Participation.

BOCA RATON, FLORIDA:  Evening Star Productions will leap even farther back into history,  jumping from William Shakespeare (their recent production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream played to appreciative audiences for three weeks in August) to Johannes Gutenberg when they produce Anthony King and Scott Brown’s Gutenberg!  The Musical! which will open on September 15th, and run through October 2nd at Boca Raton’s Sol Theatre.

This uproarious spoof tells the story of two passionate musical theatre writers – desperate and bravely untalented – who perform a backer’s audition for their new musical about the inventor of the printing press. With an unending supply of enthusiasm, the two authors sing all the songs and play all the parts in their crass historical epic.

Gutenberg! The Musical! opened at the Actor’s Playhouse in January 2007; it was nominated for the 2007 Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Musical and the 2007 Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding New Off-Broadway Musical, and its authors were nominated for the 2007 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Book of a Musical.

Gutenberg’s director, Ben Sandomir, explains the play this way: “Bud and Doug are putting on a backer’s audition for their new musical about the inventor of the printing press, Johannes Gutenberg. Since research materials on Johannes are “scant” they fill in the blanks with “historical fiction”.

“Bud and Doug are played by two local South Florida actors, Robyn Eli Brenner and Alex Weiss,” he continues.   “They also play all 18 characters in the musical, a mighty but fitting task for a play about two artists shooting for the stars. As the director, I’ve spent the last few months trying to figure out how Bud and Doug can transport the audience to the word of their magnum opus on a shoestring budget inside a small black box theatre. I think our audiences will laugh and be entertained and fall in love with these hopeless optimists, as I have.”

Alex Weiss, who plays Doug, agrees: “I’m so excited to be working with this extremely talented cast and crew on Gutenberg! The Musical!” he says. “With Ben’s direction and unique perspective, I really think we will be bringing something to South Florida that’s never been done before. Plus, I get to play a variety of different characters including a woman named after a font. It’s the little things!”

Weiss has also offered a thought from the enthusiastic perspective of his character, Doug Simon:   “I can’t wait to bring our musical to the people! Bud and I have always wanted to be on Broadway and I truly feel like this is the first and only step that we will need to get there.”

BOCA RATON, FL:  Evening Star Productions will warp from one classic musical to 37 classical plays when they present The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged)[revised] from June 17th through June 26th at Sol Theatre in Boca Raton.  (The company’s production of The Rocky Horror Show completed a sold out run at The Abyss Stage on May 28th).

An irreverent, fast paced comedic condensation of all the Bard’s plays, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) was written in 1987 by Adam Long, Daniel Singer and Jess Winfield (aka Reduced Shakespeare Company), and was first performed at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.  It eventually ran for nine years in London’s West End.  Featured are all 37 of Shakespeare’s plays, meant to be performed in 97 minutes, by three actors.

To celebrate its 20th anniversary, Singer and Winfield thoroughly revised the show to bring it up to date for 21st century audiences, incorporating some of the funniest material culled from numerous productions that have been performed around the world, as well as references to various contemporary cultural touchstones. Renamed The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged)[revised] the show is notable for – among other things – holding the world record for the shortest ever performance of Hamlet, clocking in at 43 seconds, as well as the fastest performance of Hamlet backwards, at 42 seconds.

Evening Star’s artistic director Rosalie Grant has enlisted Savannah Rootes to direct the production:

“I’m so excited to be directing my first play and the fact that it’s Complete Works makes it extra special,” Rootes says. “As the first show I stage-managed, Complete Works holds a special place in my heart. It was the beginning of a wonderful journey of learning the ropes and what it really takes to be the brains of the operation. The best part was working beside Rosalie Grant. By the end of my first show with her we were on the same brainwave. I really grew up while expanding my skills in stage management and direction. I’m psyched that I’m re-entering the world of Complete Works. It is funny, witty, and the perfect combination of physical and intellectual comedy. The cast is incredible and the staff at Sol Theatre provides awesome support. It will be a show you won’t want to miss.”

Taking on over 1000 roles in the production are Alex Weiss, Edward Scott, and Seth Trucks – all of whom are well versed in the works of the Bard. Alex Weiss’ numerous stage credits include the roles of Benedick in Much Ado About Nothing, and Caliban in The Tempest.  Edward Scott has played The Grave Digger in Hamlet, Romeo in Romeo and Juliet, Lysander in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Lorenzo in The Merchant of Venice. Seth Trucks studied classical theatre at the British American Drama Academy and The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, and has performed with the Palm Beach Shakespeare Festival.

BOCA RATON, FL:  Evening Star Productions will present Peter Gordon’s comedic send-up of classic ‘whodounnits’, Murdered to Death, from April 14th through May 1st at Sol Theatre in Boca Raton. (There will be a preview performance on April 14th)

Gordon’s spoof – which has been described as ‘deliciously wicked’ and ‘hilarious and very clever’ – has created a cast of stereotypical Agatha Christie-like characters: Bunting the butler; an English Colonel with the prerequisite stiff upper lip; a shady French art dealer and his moll; bumbling local inspectors; and a well-meaning local sleuth who seems to attract murder wherever she goes.  They’re all caught up in the side-splitting antics which follow the mysterious death of the owner of a country manor house.

“My love affair with British comedy goes back to watching Benny Hill with my grandparents up through Monty Python and Fawlty Towers,” Grant explains.  “I first read the Peter Gordon “Death” series and fell absolutely in love with Inspector Pratt (inspired by the character Inspector Clouseau).  So I brought a group of local actor friends together one evening to hear Murdered to Death read, and when it took us over 3 hours to get through the read due to our laughter I knew Evening Star had to stage it.  I am thrilled to have an outstanding cast to bring Murdered to Death to life as a regional premiere!”
