Sol Children Theatre and Evening Star Productions
to present two entirely different productions in February and March

Sol_Evening-Star-Combined-L
Sol Children Theatre, Evening Star Productions, and the companies’ artistic director Rosalie Grant are not resting on any laurels.  Grant, winner this year of the South Florida Theatre League’s newly established Remy Award as the Outstanding Contributor to Children’s Theatre, has two productions in the planned for February and March, and another ten in the works through December 2014.

Sol Children Theatre will present J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan or The Boy Who DSCN1536 aWould Not Grow Up from January 17th through February 2nd.  This adaptation of the beloved children’s classic, by John Caird and Trevor Nunn, as directed by Rosalie Grant is full of laughter, action, and adventure.  The tale of Wendy, Michael, and John Darling as they travel through Neverland with Peter Pan; bunking in alongside the Lost Boys; battling Captain Hook and his pirate crew; and encountering the rest of Barrie’s beloved characters (including Princess Tiger Lily, and of course Tinkerbell), has thrilled and delighted generations of theatre-goers.  Sol’s young actors, under Grant’s direction, are well equipped to bring this tale to life, “And,” says Grant, “Along the way the audience will recognize the boy who never grew up as the child in all of us who is youth, joy, and freedom.”

Evening Star Productions, the newly created off-shoot of Sol Children Theatre, will present Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde from February 28th through March 16th.   Evening Star offers serious young adult actors the opportunity to push the boundaries of their knowledge and talent in a safe and highly professional environment, and to work with professionals to provide practical experience, education, and support for those desiring a career in theatre.

Adapted for the stage by Jeffrey Hatcher from the Robert Louis Stevenson classic, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is “a smart, tense, and suspenseful new take on Stevenson’s look at ‘the evil that lurks in the hearts of men… Hatcher has fashioned a play that seems truer to Stevenson but hipper, sexier and more intense…” (The San Francisco Chronicle)

Tickets to both productions are on sale now, and are available on line at: www.solchildren.org, www.eveningstarproductions.org or by phone at 561-447-8829.
Sol Theatre is located at 3333 North Federal Highway (just south of Spanish River Boulevard) in Boca Raton.

“…Rollicking, sad, shocking, goofy, and thoughtful.
It is comic drama firing on all cylinders, a superb work…”
~The Washington Post~

Parade Productions will present Deborah Zoe Laufer’s The Last Schwartz from January 30th through February 23rd at the Mizner Park Cultural Arts Center’s Studio Theatre.

Focusing on a family in flux gathered together on one fateful weekend, the play received unanimously glowing reviews when it debuted at Florida Stage in 2002.

“I’m thrilled to have Parade Productions give The Last Schwartz a OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAproduction,” says playwright Deborah Zoe Laufer. “It’s a play that’s very close to my heart. It’s had a nice life — it’s had many productions, ran for over six months in LA, and had three options for commercial Off-Broadway productions (all of which fell through!). But it’s been a while since anyone gave it a whirl.  I hope everyone has a blast with it!”

Laufer has a deep fondness for South Florida and is very connected to its theatrical community. “The Last Schwartz was my first professional production,” she explains. “I fell in love with Florida Stage – it became my professional home for the next ten years. They gave every new play of mine a reading, produced three of my premieres; commissioned me; we collaborated on getting grants. I was down here at least once a year, frequently much more.

“Maybe because of that, I think I’ve had more productions of my plays in Florida than anywhere else,” she continues. “At least ten that I can think of – and several readings and short plays.  I’ve also taught for the past two years at the Playwright Development Program through the Miami- Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs. I was included in the One-Minute Play Festival as a Florida Playwright. It really is a second home (and my brother lives in Boca!).”

The Last Schwartz will be directed by Kim St. Leon, and will feature Ken Clement, Kim Ostrenko, Betsy Graver, Mark Della Ventura, Matt Stabile, and Candace Caplin.

The Last Schwartz will have one preview performance on January 30th, 2014.  It will open on January 31st, and will run through February 23rd, with performances Thursday through Saturday evenings at 7:30 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays at 3 p.m. Ticket prices are $35 ($30 for groups of 15 or more).

Tickets are on sale now, and can be purchased on line at: www.paradeproductions.org, or by calling 866-811-4111.  For Group Sales please call:  561-291-9678.

The Popular Hit Musical Returns to South Florida for a Limited Run

From Lily Langtree to Cyndi Lauper and Betty Boop to Tina Turner, or from Rosie the Riveter to Britney Spears, female singers and pop stars and their music provide a vivid reflection of how much has changed for women since the beginning of the 20th century.  RESPECT: A Musical Journey of Women, which has evolved from a one-woman dissertation to an international hit musical revue since its debut, is an entertaining, exuberant, and exhilarating look at the lives of women as reflected in the popular music of the times.  RESPECT: A Musical Journey of Women will run from December 5th through January 5th at the Mizner Park Cultural Arts Center’s Studio Theatre in Boca Raton. DSCN1306a

This production, which is part of the BRTG’s newly extended season, is a return of the very first, wildly popular Florida incarnation of RESPECT and will be directed by the show’s original director, Peter J. Loewy. Featuring an ensemble cast of four and a live band, and combining excerpts of 60 songs including “Someone to Watch Over Me,” “I Will Survive,” “I Will Follow Him,” “These Boots are Made for Walking,” “What’s Love Got to Do with it,” and “Hero” with women’s own stories about finding dreams, lost love, relationship issues, entering the workforce, gaining independence, and more, RESPECT has resonated with audiences around the world. Men as well as women will have no trouble at all identifying with the messages of encouragement and empowerment that RESPECT portrays.

Loewy, who recently produced a successful revival of RESPECT in his own theatre in Metuchen, New Jersey, is excited to bring the show back to its ‘state of origin’.  “It’s a great show,” he explains.  “Everyone who sees it loves it.  It’s ‘up’, it’s fun, and yet it has a story to tell.  And I get as many positive comments about it from men, as I do from women!”

RESPECT definitely has a universal appeal. “What’s interesting – and exciting – to me about RESPECT is that it’s attractive to all audiences,” Loewy says.  “We get mothers with their daughters, and grandmothers with their granddaughters, not to mention their male counterparts!  When we played at the Cuillo Centre for the Arts and at the 26th Street Theatre in Wilton Manors, we would chat with people before and after the show.  Some of them had seen it 5 or more times!”

Sharyn PeoplesAlong with Sharyn Peoples, who recently received raveZiarra Washington reviews in Slow Burn Theatre Company’s production of Next to Normal, Carla Bordonada, Nicole Kinzel, and Ziarra Washington will make up the cast of RESPECT: A Musical Journey of Women; the show’s original musical director, Phil Hinton is also on board. champagne-web

There will be two special New Year’s Eve ‘champagne performances’ of RESPECT (at 4 pm and 9 pm) on December 31st.

Praise for RESPECT: A Musical Journey of Women:

Dorothy“I loved the show. It was the sound track of my life. Everyone should go see it!”  Patti LaBelle

“RESPECT is fun! Women love RESPECT. They Adore it!”  The Philadelphia Inquirer

“It’s  One Heck Of A Fun Ride, complete with some of your favorite songs of the 20th Century.  This is a Must See and Must Hear Musical that you will want to see more than once!” Broadwayworld.com

“ ‘Respect’ — and they ain’t lyin’! Musicals have been made from classic novels, campy movies and even comic strips, but it seems likely that RESPECT: A Musical Journey of Women is the first show to come from a social history textbook.”  Hap Erstein, Palm Beach Post/PalmBeachArtsPaper

“RESPECT…. is an engaging and entertaining look at the evolving roles of women in the 20th century. Using popular Top 40 hits, music, video images, and costumes, Dr. Marcic illustrates how, in the early part of the century, song lyrics resonated with women’s dependency and submissiveness; echoed their rebellion in the late 1960s; and reflected their independence in the 1990s.” Williams, MA newspaper

The Women’s Theatre Project
presents
the Southeastern Premiere of
The Lyons
Lyons_Postcard

Nicky Silver’s ‘deliciously dark and hilarious’ comedy
to run December 6th – 22nd

The Women’s Theatre Project will open their tenth season – and their second season at the Willow Theatre in Sugar Sand Park – with the Southeastern premiere of The Lyons, Nicky Silver’s outrageously funny and stirring play about life, death, and family.  The Lyons will run from December 6th through December 22nd.

As the Lyons family gathers together for a most unusual family reunion, Rita Lyons and her grown children come to find that despite being a family each of them is totally isolated. Afraid of closeness and solitude, they are pushed into a new arena – the human connection. The Lyons received glowing reviews when it ran on Broadway in 2012. New York Magazine’s Scott Brown said The Lyons is “simply trying to tell a funny, furious little tale of family annihilation with honesty, savagery, and humanity.”

Genie's headshot“I was immediately attracted to this script by Nicky Silver,” explains director Genie Croft. “Silver is known for his caustic characters in plays about broken families, and warped relationships – and the characters in The Lyons allow their very private and unedited thoughts to be spoken out loud, and those thoughts are so full of humor, insight, and pain. As The New York Times, said in their review:  “Hilariously frank, clear-sighted, compassionate and forgiving….laughter that rises in close and regular waves….””

“I am delighted that I was able to cast such a talented, creative group of actors to bring this funny, edgy, Broadway hit to life,” says Croft. “Multi-Carbonell Award winner Jessica K. Peterson will play Rita Lyons, the indomitable, frayed mother of this funny, furious family, and I’ve also cast Kevin Reilly, Clay Cartland, Jacqueline Laggy, Matthew Korinko, and Carolyn Johnson.

Jessica K. Peterson“It’s such a guilty pleasure to be able to laugh at such a dysfunctional family,” says Peterson. “Nicky Silver doesn’t spare anyone. I’m very grateful to Genie for picking plays with such great female roles.”

Jacqueline Laggy, who is the producer and one of the founding members of The Jacqueline LaggyWomen’s Theatre Project’s is also pleased: “I’m very excited to kick off our tenth season with a Southeastern premiere of a Broadway hit!” She says. “The Lyons is a very funny and witty play that examines the dynamics of a modern family in today’s society.  And the main character, Rita Lyons is a great and unique role for a middle aged woman who is about to enter into a new stage in her life.  I’m thrilled to be a part of the cast and crew involved in this production!”

The Lyons will run from December 6th through December 22nd, 2013, with performances on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 8 pm, and on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays at 2 p.m.

The Willow Theatre at Sugar Sand Park is located at 300 South Military Trail in Boca Raton, just south of Palmetto Park Road. Tickets for The Lyons are on sale now, and can be purchased at the Willow Theatre Box office: 561-347-3948. Tickets for all performances are $25.

The Marilyn Monroe Story In Her Own Words and Music
Starring Sunny Thompson as Marilyn Monroe
tutu hirez
“MUST SEE MONROE!
Sunny Thompson’s dazzling performance is nothing short of a beautifully astute, highly credible portrait that honors the film and pop icon’s timeless legacy with captivating pull.”  ~Dayton City Paper

Blue Robe hirezA photo shoot in the summer of 1962. As screen icon Marilyn Monroe poses for her photographer she finds herself wondering what it might be like if she had it to do all over again.  In Marilyn: Forever Blonde, the legendary actress reveals much of what we know – but even more about what we don’t know – of the roller coaster ride she took from the orphanage to the silver screen.  It is a fascinating and provocative journey.

The Boca Raton Theatre Guild will present Marilyn: Forever Blonde at the Township Center for the Performing Arts in Coconut Creek from November 21st – December 1st, and at the Mizner Park Cultural Arts Center’s Studio Theatre from January 9th – 11th.  The production is part of the BRTG’s recently announced extended season.

Marilyn: Forever Blonde, stars acclaimed actress Sunny Thompson, and _DSC0420has won a dozen major awards including “Best Special Theatrical Event of the Year,”  “Best Leading Actress in a Play,” “One of the Year’s Top Ten Productions” and “Best Touring Production”.  It has played throughout the United States, as well as in Canada, England and New Zealand. Critics have consistently and unanimously praised Thompson’s compelling and nuanced performance as Marilyn.

_DSC0573 Diamonds hi-rezPlaywright Greg Thompson painstakingly researched all aspects of Monroe’s life – all the words spoken in the play have been documented as being Marilyn’s own.  Marilyn: Forever Blonde features 17 songs by some of the greatest songwriters in show business; Irving Berlin, Harold Arlen, and Johnny Mercer are all represented, and Monroe performed each of the musical numbers featured in the production in her films. The music is has been carefully selected to help tell Marilyn’s story – a life of dreams and make-believe that catapulted her to the stars and ultimately found her crashing down to Earth – remaining in our memories forever.

Marilyn: Forever Blonde is directed by Stephanie Shine, Artistic Director of the Memphis Shakespeare Company.  The play was written by Greg Thompson, who has produced dozens of award-winning shows throughout the world.

The play languished on the shelf for more than a dozen years before Thompson found the right actress to play the part. “I found Marilyn Monroe impersonators who couldn’t act, and many wonderful actresses who just didn’t seem to give off the sexual playfulness of Monroe,” says Thompson.  “I didn’t even think of Sunny as Marilyn until she put on a Marilyn styled wig to do a parody in her stage show.”

But Thompson turned the offer down, explaining that no woman should ever have to be compared with Marilyn Monroe.  However after two years of ‘nagging’ Thompson finally got his way.  “It took nearly 15 years to make it happen,” he says.  “If I’d had to wait another 15 years I’m afraid I might have forgotten what it was about Marilyn Monroe that turned me on in the first place!”

Tickets for Marilyn: Forever Blonde are on sale now.  Tickets for the Township Center for the Performing Arts production can be purchased by calling 954-970-0606.  Tickets for the Mizner Park Cultural Arts Center production can be purchased on line at www.brtg.org or by calling 866-811-4111.  Performance days, dates, and times are listed below.

Critical praise for Marilyn: Forever Blonde and Sunny Thompson:

“It is a haunting image that Sunny Thompson creates. Every nuance, every
eye blink, every gorgeous gown and her walk is Marilyn. This is truly one of
the greatest performances of the modern stage. Thompson has the same
magnetic presence that Monroe had and is astounding in this role. The
production is exemplary. The set is gorgeous with exquisite design elements.” ~San Francisco Online Daily News

“The delectable Sunny Thompson has the strange allure of Monroe down to
a tee, you can’t take your eyes off her!” ~ The London Times

I was constantly mesmerized by Sunny. I could hardly believe it was a
show…It actually brought tears to my eyes…Sunny Thompson could win every
know award for this masterpiece performance.” ~ Mr. Blackwell, Hollywood

BRTG2 The Boca Raton Theatre Guild may need to update its name
as it takes to the road!

The Boca Raton Theatre Guild has added four additional productions to its 2013-2014 season. Under the direction of Artistic Director Keith Garsson and a forward-thinking board of directors, the company has decided to expand their reach and venture beyond their home base, The Willow Theatre in Sugar Sand Park.

The BRTG, who recently announced they have combined their 2013-2014 Willow Theatre season with that of The Women’s Theatre Project, has been consistently evolving in recent years, “And this is just the next step,” explains Garsson.

The show choices are eclectic, and have been chosen to attract a broad range of theatre patrons.  David Mamet, Marilyn Monroe, an edgy new musical, and a South Florida favorite are all on the Guild’s extended schedule, and some of the area’s top talent has signed on to bring  these productions to life:

Sunny Thompson will star in Marilyn: Forever Blonde at the Township Center for the Performing Arts from November 21st to December 1st.  Thompson has received rave reviews for her masterful portrayal of the still popular legend nationally and internationally.  The show will also play at the Mizner Cultural Arts Center’s Studio Theatre from January 9th – 11th.

The Boca Raton Theatre Guild will team with Peter J. Loewy and present RESPECT:  A Musical Journey of Women from December 5th through January 5th at the Mizner Park Cultural Arts Center’s Studio Theatre.  This is a return of the very first, wildly popular Florida incarnation of RESPECT and will be helmed by Loewy, the show’s first director. RESPECT: A Musical Journey of Women details the journey of women told through Top-40 music. Combining excerpts of 60 songs including “Someone to Watch Over Me,” “I Will Survive,” “I Will Follow Him,” “These Boots are Made for Walking,” “What’s Love Got to Do with it,” and “Hero” with women’s own stories about finding dreams, lost love, relationship issues, entering the workforce, gaining independence, and more.

From February 28th – March 21st audiences will have the opportunity to see the Southeast American premiere of Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright David Mamet’s The Anarchist, starring Carbonell Award-winner Patti Gardner and Jacqueline Laggy. Two women and one unspeakable crime highlight this searing drama as one character’s radical past in the turbulent 70s comes back to haunt her….again. This production will take place in the Andrews Living Arts Studio, an intimate, 50 seat black box theatre well suited to the play.

Everyday Rapture was praised by critics and audiences alike when it played on Broadway in 2010.  Margot Moreland will star in the Southeast premiere of this Tony Award-nominated musical story of a young woman’s psycho-sexual-spiritual journey on the rocky path that separates her mostly Mennonite past from her mostly Manhattan future. Her life takes her from the cornfields of Kansas to the clover fields of New York (with a disturbing detour through YouTube). Featuring songs made famous by Harry Nilsson, The Band, David Byrne, Roberta Flack, Mister Rogers, The Dap Kings and Judy Garland. Everyday Rapture will run from April 25th – May 11th at the Mizner Park Cultural Arts Center, and from May 25th – May 27th at the Willow Theatre in Sugar Sand Park.

The Boca Raton Theatre Guild is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to producing professional productions and advancing the art of theatre in the South Florida community.

Both the BRTG and TWTP operate out of the Willow Theatre at Sugar Sand Park in Boca Raton, and both companies have noted an increase in interest about the others’ productions by theatre-goers since the Women’s Theatre Project moved into the Willow to the last season.  Willow logoThe fit is a natural one, says BRTG Artistic Director Keith Garsson: “By offering to combine our four shows into one package, Sugar Sand Park has enabled theatre goers to enjoy a wide range of productions from classics to edgy new comedies. We will still be able to maintain our level of professionalism, yet we hope to reach out to a wider fan-base and encourage more cross-over between audiences loyal to both companies before The Women’s Theatre Project moved here from Fort Lauderdale.”

Genie Croft, Artistic Director of the Women’s Theatre Project agrees:   “This is another big move for us, especially since our original move last season to the Willow – and a part of our continuing growth,” she explains.  “This partnership with The Boca Raton Theatre Guild allows both companies to offer an exciting season of outstanding plays and musicals to our patrons at a very affordable price.  And it’s an extraordinary opportunity to showcase and highlight some of Florida’s best talent in drama, comedy, and musical theatre. It’s a perfect combination!”

The plays and musicals that will make up the two companies combined season are They’re Playing Our Song, the south eastern premier of Nicky Silver’s The Lyons, the current Broadway hit Pippin, and Red Hot Patriot: The Kickass Wit of Molly Ivins.  Details about each production are below.

Subscriptions to the combined Boca Raton Theatre Guild/The Women’s Theatre Project are now on sale and can be purchased by calling the Willow Theatre Box Office at 561-347-3948.  The subscription offer will expire with the final performance of They’re Playing Our Song, on November 24th.  Tickets to individual performances are also on sale.

Parade Productions to present
Deborah Zoe Laufer’s The Last Schwartz
Schwartz 3 copy
January 31 – February 23, 2014
The Schwartz family is on its last legs. Their father is dead and their Catskills home is going up for sale. Norma Schwartz’ husband hasn’t spoken to her since she turned their 15 year old son in for smoking pot; it doesn’t seem like brother Herb’s wife will ever present him with an heir; middle sibling Simon has one foot on the moon; and youngest brother Gene arrives at the family compound with an unexpected guest. What unfolds is the funny, surprising, and ultimately moving story of a family at a key moment in their history.

Parade Productions will present Deborah Zoe Laufer’s The Last Schwartz from January 31st through February 23rd at the Mizner Park Cultural Arts Center’s Studio Theatre.  The play received unanimously glowing reviews when it debuted at Florida Stage in 2002.

Director Kim St. Leon was immediately drawn to the piece. “We see a family’s history and future collide on one fateful weekend,” she says. “While we need to understand where we come from, we can’t let it hinder where we’re going.  In The Last Schwartz some hold on to the past too tightly while others let go of it too freely. The machinations of families have always fascinated me and The Last Schwartz does that with laughter, charm, and poignancy.”

Ken Clement and Betsy Graver have already committed to the project, and casting for the rest of the roles is underway.

“I’m very excited that we’re doing The Last Schwartz,” says Parade Productions Executive Producer Candace Caplin. “It’s one of my all-time favorite plays.  It has everything; it’s funny, it’s touching, it’s full of surprises; its characters are people we all know and deal with. It’s been top of my list for years.”

Playwright Deborah Zoe Laufer is a recipient of the Helen Merrill Playwriting Award and a Lilly Award. She is a graduate of The Juilliard School and a two-time recipient of the LeCompte du Nouy grant from The Lincoln Center Foundation. Her plays have been developed at Florida Stage, The Eugene O’Neill Playwrights Conference, Williamstown Theatre Festival, The Ojai Playwrights Conference, The Missoula Colony, The Cherry Lane Alternative, The Dramatists Guild Fellowship Program, New Georges, The Lark Play Development Center, and Geva Theatre Center. She has received a National New Play Network rolling premiere and commission.  She is a member of the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop as a lyricist and librettist.

Parade Productions is a not-for profit theatre company whose mission is “To produce high quality theatre experiences that entertain, enlighten, inform, uplift, and inspire audiences, sending them home with new thoughts, insights, questions, and ideas.”

The Last Schwartz will have one preview performance on January 30th, 2014.  It will open on January 31st, and will run through February 23rd, with performances Thursday through Saturday evenings at 7:30 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays at 3 p.m. Ticket prices are $35 ($30 for groups of 20 or more).

Tickets will go on sale June 1st, and will be available at: www.paradeproductions.org, or by calling 866-811-4111.  For Group Sales please call:  561-291-9678.

Critical praise for The Last Schwartz:

“. . . metaphysically profound . . . The Last Schwartz is rollicking, sad, shocking, goofy, and thoughtful. It is comic drama firing on all cylinders, a superb work of theater by a playwright in full command of her considerable gift for character and dialogue.”  T.L. Ponick, The Washington Times

“Anyone who has lived in a family for even a minute will be able to identify with the wackiness and heartbreaks in The Last Schwartz.”  Laufer creates “alternately funny and emotional dialogue.”  Donna Hartman, Bradenton Herald

“The Last Schwartz balances comedy and drama. We ache for the Schwartz family members. We love them and hate them and laugh all the way to the family patriarch’s grave and beyond.” Alec Clayton, Tacoma News Tribune / The Olympian

Acerbic comedy and salty satire are in store for The Women’s Theatre Project audiences as the well respected company enters into its 11th season and its second year at the Willow Theatre in Boca Raton’s Sugar Sand Park.  The Lyons will run from December 6th through December 22nd, 2013, and Red Hot Patriot: The Kick-Ass Wit of Molly Ivins will play February 28th through March 16th, 2014.  It will be the first time either of these plays has been produced in South Florida.

Lyons_PostcardThe Lyons, Nicky Silver’s outrageously funny and stirring play about a family coming to terms with the impending death of its patriarch received glowing reviews when it ran on Broadway in 2012.   The play focuses on Rita Lyons and her grown children, who, as they gather to say goodbye, learn that despite being a family, each of them is totally isolated. Afraid of closeness and solitude, they are pushed into a new arena – the human connection. New York Magazine’s Scott Brown said The Lyons is “simply trying to tell a funny, furious little tale of family annihilation with honesty, savagery, and humanity.”

“The complex and inter-connected relationships in this family remind us how close comedy and tragedy are to each other,” says TWTP artistic director Genie Croft. “I found the dysfunctional family in The Lyons to be darkly funny, smart, and deeply affecting.  It’s an exciting script that roars to life, with characters who behave with complicated emotions, and this makes it an excellent choice for the type of work that The Women’s Theatre Project likes to offer on stage. Although it’s the first play TWTP is producing that was written by a man (our past 32 productions have all been written by women), we feel it is a unique opportunity to continue to expand and evolve our mission, by giving voice to these characters, theme, and plot.”

With Red Hot Patriot: The Kick-Ass Wit of Molly Ivins audiences will be Red Hottreated to the wit and wisdom of a true original.  Barbara Bradshaw will star as the unsinkable, unstoppable Molly Ivins. The ‘dyed-in-the-wool liberal from deep in the heart of Texas’, famously brassy newspaper columnist and best-selling author was a crusading journalist who broke gender barriers with her sharp-tongued wit, humor, and political savvy to establish herself as one of the nation’s most influential political columnists.  Written by twin sisters Margaret and Allison Engel, the play is a true tribute to Ivin’s wit, sense of humor, and love of irony. The script also delves into Ivins’ life to reveal what drove her from a comfortable upper- class upbringing and education to the good-ole-boy, hard-drinking world of journalism and political warfare.  Red Hot Patriot seamlessly weaves personal anecdotes with a sharp and clever look at one of our favorite national pastimes – politics.

“I love the fact that the Dallas Times Herald let Ivins write what she pleased,” says Croft, “They even endorsed that policy on billboards that read: ‘Molly Ivins, Can’t Say That, Can She?’ The Engels’ script captures the jokes about provoking politicians, and her reminiscences of personal heartbreak inform and offer insight into who she was.”

The Willow Theatre at Sugar Sand Park is located at 300 South Military Trail in Boca Raton, just south of Palmetto Park Road.
