WILTON MANORS, FL: “I’ve always been drawn to the paintings of the great Impressionists,” award-winning playwright and director Michael Leeds mused recently. “As opposed to the idealized forms and perfect symmetry that was the norm, the Impressionists chose subjects from all walks of life, capturing who they were and what they were doing in that fleeting moment in time. I was especially intrigued by the women in their paintings. What were they thinking? What were they feeling? What was their world like?”

Leeds explores this theme when Pigs Do Fly Productions presents the World Premiere of his new play, Impressions, at the Abyss Stage in Wilton Manors. The production will run from July 21 – August 6. (There will be a preview performance on July 20^th at 8 pm.)

From a Monet matron to a Degas dancer, Impressions brings these women to life to reveal their joys, their fears and their passions.

“When Michael approached me with his ideas during our last production, Invasion of Privacy, I became excited immediately,” Pigs Do Fly Productions founder and Executive Producer Ellen Wacher says. “By wonderful coincidence that period of art is my favorite. I’ve worked with Michael – I am, and always have been – a great admirer of his work, and now, after reading the play I can hardly wait to see it myself!”

“Writing Impressions gave me the opportunity to enter the world of each painting and imagine the events surrounding the moments captured by these incredible artists,” Leeds explains. “And, although it wasn’t intentional, when I was done, I found these women were all linked in some way by the limitations society imposed on them due to their gender, their class, or their age.

“Of course, none of this would be possible without the enthusiastic support of Ellen Wacher and Pigs Do Fly Productions,” Leeds continues. “When I first brought the project to Ellen, I had no idea she was a passionate devotee of the Impressionists. We’re both incredibly excited to see how it all comes together. The production elements of the play present many challenges in how to best bring these paintings to life. Luckily, I’ve got three extremely versatile actresses, and a great design team. To quote a Sondheim lyric, “Putting it together bit by bit… Art isn’t easy!”

Wacher and Leeds have cast three award-winning actresses – Patti Gardner, Barbara Sloan, and Karen Stephens – to bring the iconic paintings Leeds has chosen to life. Along with Edgar Degas and Claude Monet, Leeds has chosen works by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Édouard Manet, Mary Cassatt, Henri Toulouse-Lautrec, Gustave Caillebotte, Frédéric Bazille, Isaac Israëls, and Marie Bracquemond to ‘illustrate’.

Leeds and Wacher have enlisted recent Carbonell Award-winner Jodi Dellaventura to design the Impressions set. Others on the show’s design team are Kevin Black (Projections), Ardean Landhuis (Lighting Design), Jerry Sturdefant (Costume Design), David Hart (Sound). Kevin Raymond Hammond (Wigs). Jeff Ostrow will serve as Impressions’ Production Stage Manager.

MARGATE, FL: Last fall Stage Door Theatre’s Theatre 2 jumped and jived with Kevin Black’s exuberant production of Swing! Swing! Swing! The Carbonell Recommended musical revue was so popular with Stage Door audiences, that the theatre’s Executive Producer Dee Wilson-Bunn decided it would be the perfect vehicle to ‘jazz up’ Stage Door’s 2017 summer season. Swing! Swing! Swing! will open once again on June 16^th in the ever-popular venue’s Theatre 2, and run through July 30^th.

“Swing music has its roots in Jazz, beginning in New Orleans and Kansas City then eventually moving its way across the nation.” Black explained last October. “Once it reached New York City, the phenomenon quickly became the pop music of its day. Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller took the jazz infused sounds of George Gershwin and Louis Armstrong and invented a genre that featured a strong drum and bass line, creating that unmistakable rhythm that lead to the high energy dance styles of the jitterbug and the jive.

“Swing! Swing! Swing! pays tribute to these Jazz and Swing classics, told through various thematic groupings of songs and artists,” he continued. “That Big Band sound, normally created by a 20 plus piece swing band, will be reimagined by utilizing live piano, bass and drums, while incorporating the cast as the brass section through rhythmic vocals and harmonized scatting. The show is set in an Art Deco style club, masterfully envisioned by Michael McClain. We are certain the more senior patrons of Stage Door will thoroughly enjoy reliving these timeless classics. Our hope is to bring this magnificent musical style to a new generation of audiences.”

Just a few of the classic pieces that will be revisited include ‘Tuxedo Junction’,’In the Mood’, ‘Stardust’, ‘Stormy Weather’, ‘I Got Rhythm’, and of course ‘It Don’t Mean a Thing.’

Three of the show’s original cast will return for this production of Swing!: Alexandra Van Hasselt, Sharyn Peoples, Elijah Word have all signed on to reprise their roles. They will be joined by Pasqualino Beltempo, Rebeca Diaz, and Christopher Patterson.

BOCA RATON, FL: Broward Stage Door Theatre in association with Kevin Black Productions will bring Black’s hit show, Vegas: A Night on the Strip to Boca Raton’s Willow Theatre in Sugar Sand Park for a limited run from February 3^rd to February 12^th. The production, which premiered at Stage Door on December 9^th, played to packed houses through its run , and was so well received by audiences and critics alike that when The Willow expressed interest in the production, Black and Stage Door Executive Producer felt the show deserved to be extended, and Palm Beach County audiences given the chance to see what Broward County theatre patrons had been enjoying during the show’s sold out run.

From Soul to Swing, Kevin Black’s recent productions – created exclusively for Stage Door Theatre – have had audiences on their feet and dancing. The Soul of Motor City, his tribute to the music of Motown, which was extended several times over this past summer, and Swing! Swing! Swing! his lovingly assembled compendium of Jazz and Swing classics were both recommended for Carbonell nominations.

Vegas: A Night on the Strip dives into the rich history that made the city of Las Vegas a hot destination for entertainers from around the world. Featuring music from some of Vegas’ most memorable icons – from the Rat Pack and Elvis to the modern-day Cirque-type spectacles; from showgirls to headliners; from high-rollers to high-flying acrobatics… “with maybe a Vegas wedding thrown in!” Black said recently.

“When most people think of Vegas, they immediately remember the likes of Frank, Sammy, and Dean…The Rat Pack,” Black continued. “However, Vegas: A Night on the Strip is so much more. I decided to tell the history of ‘The Entertainment Capitol of The World’, through the construction and implosion of those iconic hotels on The Strip, and the entertainment that graced their stages. Our six vocalists pay tribute to this great city with nods to numerous Vegas icons – not only the Rat Pack, but legends like Celine Dion, Elton John, Tom Jones and Wayne Newton, and the lavish cirque -style shows that dominate The Strip today.

“The creative “workshop” process is my favorite,” Black explained when asked about the evolution of the production. “Arranging new ways to present some old classics and seldom heard gems is so satisfying. Our Musical Director/Arranger Ben Bagby is a master at this and you’ll see his work shine more than ever in this show.”

Five of the of the six original Stage Door vocalists will make the transfer to the Willow – they are: Daniel Bourgoin, Arlene Coutee, Chantal Deshaies, Gabrielle Graham, and Brad Rakushin. Joshua Graham, who wowed audiences in Black’s recent hit show The Soul of Motor City, will replace Jar’Davion Brown, who had a prior commitment. Black has also added variety comedic host Nikki Adams to the mix. Specialty artists Cherrise Pawlak and Derick Pierson, and 12 year old vocal sensation Emily Taylor Kaufman round out the cast of 10.

Vegas: A Night on the Strip will run from February 3 to 12 at The Willow Theatre in Sugar Sand Park. The theatre is located at 300 South Military Trail in Boca Raton (33486).

The show received a Carbonell recommendation, and was extended numerous times past its originally scheduled closing date. It’s no wonder then, that Stage Door Theatre’s Executive Producer Derelle Bunn has asked Black to develop another brand new show for her ever-popular theatre.

Black’s Swing! Swing! Swing! will have its world premiere at Stage Door on October 7^th. The show is scheduled to run through November 20^th.

Invasion of Privacy is based on the lawsuit brought against Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings (The Yearling) by her neighbor, Zelma Cason. Cason contended that Rawlings’ description of ‘her’ character in Rawlings’ book Cross Creek made her out to be a ‘hussy’ and sued the author for invasion of privacy (the courts of the time found libel to be too ambiguous). It was a cause of action that had never been argued in a Florida court. “That was a time when a woman lawyer was a novelty in the South, and man’s moonshine was nobody’s business, and an invasion-of-privacy lawsuit was something of a brand-new issue, which eventually became a popular reason for going to court.” Jack Lyons, Theatre & Film

MARGATE, FL: Kevin Black’s The Soul of Motor City, which will open at Stage Door Theatre on June 10^th and run through July 17^th, is the happy realization of a personal goal for the multi-talented director/choreographer.

“After 25 years of directing and producing shows that have played all over the world, I finally have the opportunity to create a show featuring my absolute favorite style of music, the songs from The Motor City – Detroit!” he explains.

“Those great songs – classics like “What’s Going On”, “Ain’t Too Proud To Beg”, and “Can’t Get Next To You” couldn’t have originated anywhere else but in Detroit – a city that may be known for the start of the American automotive industry, but will forever be remembered for its unmistakable sound.

“Starting in the early 50s, soulful music came pouring out of basements onto the streets of Detroit,” he continues. “Young singers were forming groups that would become known to the world as The Four Tops, The Temptations, The Marvelettes, The Jackson Five and The Supremes; multi-talented artists like “Little” Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Mary Wells, Smokey Robinson, and even The Queen of Soul herself – Ms. Aretha Franklin – all got their start in Detroit. The tunes that came out of The Motor City were timeless songs that have impacted generation after generation. Although they’re often remembered as “feel-good” dance hits, The Soul of Motor City focuses on the lyrics of these now classic tunes.

“As Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell put it so succinctly – “Ain’t Nuthin’ Like The Real Thing.” And the six performers in The Soul of Motor City are the real thing!”

The cast of The Soul of Motor City includes Mimi J, whose performance in Black’s recent production of On the Radio at Stage Door had audiences on their feet every night, Jar’Davion Brown, Gabrielle Graham, Joshua Graham, Elijah Word, and Alexandria Lugo who has received glowing reviews for her work in Putting It Together, now playing in Stage Door’s Theatre 1.

Kevin Black is the owner of Kevin Black Productions, a global company providing entertainment to cruise lines, corporate events, resorts, musical theater productions, and tours. Kevin’s extensive cruise line work includes costume design, choreography, production, and direction on Norwegian, Saga, Royal Caribbean and Asuka Cruise Lines. Corporate clients include HP, Motorola, Muvico, and Giorgio Armani; tours include original works – Cirque style shows, as well as musical theater productions including La Cage Aux Folles, The Jazz Singer, Smokey Joe’s Café, Funny Girl, Victor/Victoria, Cabaret, and Dreamgirls. Kevin’s work can currently be seen at the Villa de Palmar Resorts in Cabo, Mexico. His most recent work includes Laffing Matterz at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts; 8 Track, I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change, and Rags at The Plaza Theatre in Manalapan, Florida; What’s New Pussycat?, On The Radio, A Chorus Line, Promises, Promises, Pompadour, and Evita at The Stage Door Theatre in Margate, Florida. MARGATE, FL: Stage Door Theatre’s production of the multi-award winning Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice musical Evita will open on March 18th and run through April 24th.

Based on the life of Argentine political leader Eva Perón, who became the spiritual leader of the nation, Evita traces this charismatic woman’s rise from obscurity to fame and fortune as one of the most influential political leaders in the country’s history.

The idea for the show began as a result of a visit to Argentina by lyricist Tim Rice, and a subsequent reunion and collaboration with composer Andrew Lloyd Webber – their first since the release of their double album Jesus Christ Superstar in 1970. Like Superstar, Evita began as a rock opera concept album. And like its predecessor, the album produced a smash it single, ‘Don’t Cry for Me, Argentina’, which, much to Rice’s delight would have people “walking into the theatre whistling the tune,” when the album went on to become a full length production – first in London’s West End, where it won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Musical, and then on Broadway, where it became the first British musical to win the Tony Award for Best Musical.

Evita will be directed by Michael Leeds. Kevin Black will choreograph the production, and Caryl Fantel is the show’s Musical Director.

“Since the first production in 1978, Evita has had over a thousand productions all over the world,” says Leeds. “Kevin and I were attracted to this story of a woman who journeys from being an illegitimate, poverty-stricken child in the pampas of Argentina to become the most powerful woman in the world. This musical is all about passion. It fuels every scene and every relationship. We watch the cat and mouse foreplay between Evita and Juan Perón, their rise to power and their manipulation of an adoring public, all seen through the cynical eyes of an impassioned Che Guevara.

“Because the tango is such an integral element to that world, Kevin and I have set theentire show in a tango bar,” Leeds explains. “Kevin hired an extraordinary couple who specializes in the tango and they lead us through the story in dance just as Che does through song. It’s a potent combination.

“We needed a really talented cast of singers to do justice to Andrew Lloyd Weber’s music, he continues. “We were lucky to find our fourteen-member ensemble from South Florida’s talented pool of singer/dancers. We found our Evita (Jenna Pastuszek) in New York, our Che (Trevor Whitaker) in Great Britain, and our Perón is the talented Rick Hvizdak who we just worked with in Promises, Promises. It’s an exciting production to create and I’m sure it will be just as exciting to watch!”

Caryl Fantel, the shows musical director is equally enthusiastic. “What an epic piece of theatre!” she says. “I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to be part of Stage Door’s production of Evita. This musical tells the powerful story of Eva Perón almost entirely through music that is alternately sweeping and raw, and filled with emotion. Devotees of composer Andrew Lloyd Webber may catch hints of the master’s other works, including Jesus Christ Superstar and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat in this music. For our production, we have assembled an impressive group of actor/singer/dancers who share this true-life tale of ambition and political seduction that is timeless and certainly relevant today.”

Actually, the three guys were in the show we just did, Pompadour, and we were so impressed, we asked them to stick around! Kevin and I are having a great time re-visiting the 60s and hearing these new voices sing those incredible songs. How can you get tired of songs like “Yesterday”, “Dancing in the Street”, and of course, “What’s New, Pussycat!””

The idea for What’s New Pussycat? The Soundtrack of an Era was born when Stage Door Theatre’s artistic director Derelle Bunn mentioned to Leeds and Black that she had an open time slot for a show in the summer of 2014, and asked them if they’d be interested in ‘doing something’. They jumped at the chance. “Kevin and I had wanted to work together for a while, and this was a terrific opportunity,” Leeds said. “And then, of course, the question became – what should we do?!”

What’s New Pussycat? The Soundtrack of an Era, the result of their collaboration opened at Stage Door Theatre in August of 2014 and was an immediate hit with audiences and critics alike.

“What’s New, Pussycat? was originally going to be a revue of just Burt Bacharach songs,” Leeds explained at the time. “But as Kevin and I started listening to Bacharach’s music, we kept being distracted by other great songs of the same era. So we decided to expand the show to include The Mamas & The Papas, Simon & Garfunkel, Petula Clark, Dusty Springfield, Etta James, Ray Charles, The Righteous Brothers, The Fifth Dimension and all those Motown greats like The Four Tops, The Temptations, The Supremes, The Ronettes, as well as incredible composers and writers like Henry Mancini, Michel LeGrand and of course, Burt Bacharach!

“Creating the piece took careful deliberation, Leeds continued: “From past experience, both Kevin and I learned that though there are no “rules” to creating a musical revue, there are some guidelines. First, of course, is what songs are the most popular; the songs the audience is coming to hear.” (See below for a complete list of songs)

Leeds and Black will revisit their roles as the show’s director and choreographer, and Carbonell Award-winner Eric Alsford will once again serve as What’s New Pussycat’s musical director/arranger.

The What’s New Pussycat? The Soundtrack of an Era’s cast consists of Jessica Bennett, Brandon Godfrey, Preston Grover, Caitlie Moss, Dana Reminsky, and Jay Wilkinson.

Michael Leeds

Although he is primarily recognized as one of South Florida’s finest and busiest directors, Michael Leeds has also had great success as a playwright, screenwriter, and choreographer. He co-wrote and directed the Broadway musical Swinging on a Star which received a Tony Award nomination for Best Musical as well as a Drama Desk Award nomination and a Theatre World Award. Off-Broadway Leeds directed and choreographed Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah – The Songs of Allan Sherman, starring Tovah Feldshuh & Mary Testa, for which he was nominated for a Drama Desk Award for Best Director and Best Choreographer. His production of the European premiere of Arthur Miller’s Playing For Time won a Festival Fringe First Award. For film, he choreographed End of Summer, starring Jacqueline Bisset and Peter Weller and co-wrote The Simian Line starring William Hurt and Lynn Redgrave, and The Last Film Festival, starring Dennis Hopper and Jacqueline Bisset. Leeds’ plays include The First Step, and The Gift. His many South Florida productions include Mack and Mabel (Carbonell Award Best Musical), The Light In The Piazza, and A Little Night Music, (both nominated for Best Musical, and a Silver Palm Award for Direction for Night Music). As Associate Artistic Director for Island City Stage, his production of The Timekeepers garnered six Carbonell Awards including Best Direction and Best Production of a Play. The Island City Stage production of his play, Who Killed Joan Crawford, opened to rave reviews on January 14^th, and is currently playing to sold out houses. Kevin Black

Kevin Black is the owner and artistic director of Kevin Black Productions. His expertise, experience, and creativity in directing and choreography, as well as in set, costume, and lighting design have built him a solid reputation as one of the top ‘go-to guys’ in South Florida. Kevin’s most recent work includes 8 Track, I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change, and Rags at The Plaza Theatre in Manalapan. He directed and choreographed Spamalot, Tommy, and The Rocky Horror Show for Entr’Acte Theatrix performing at TheCrest Theatre in Delray Beach. Kevin has also produced South Florida tours of La Cage Aux Folles, The Jazz Singer, Smokey Joe’s Café, Funny Girl, Victor/Victoria, Cabaret and Dreamgirls. He recently directed The Jazz Singer at The Willow Theatre in Boca Raton, which sold out every performance. Kevin’s work can currently be seen at the Villa de Palmar Resorts in Cabo, Mexico; Kevin is also the Artistic Director for CAST (Career in the Arts, School of Talent) located in Miramar, Florida. www.kevinblackproductions.com/

MARGATE, FL: What do the Everly Brothers, Bobby Darrin, B.B. King, Frank and Elvis have in common? Great music… and great hair! Pompadour, a new musical review by Michael Leeds and Kevin Black features a quintet of ‘pompadoured’ guys singing and dancing through five decades of unforgettable music. The production will run from December 26th, 2015 through January 31st, 2016.

“A few years ago I was out browsing through CDs and it was surprising to see the number of current male artists – like Justin Beiber and Bruno Mars – who sported the classic pompadour,” says Leeds. “And I started thinking about the many singers through the years who’ve worn that style. After some research I discovered that the Pompadour originated as a symbol of both beauty and rebellion, and its lineage includes some of our greatest artists and groups spanning decades of music. And that was the genesis for a new musical revue called Pompadour!

“I divided the show into seven segments, the same way I had done with Swinging On A Star, but instead of a journey through time, it’s a journey through the different musical styles,” Leeds continues. “Our guides are five amazingly talented guys who all sing, dance, act, and play musical instruments! We travel from Pop standards to Latin to Country to R&B, using the music made famous by solo artists (all pompadoured!) like Sinatra, Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Jose Feliciano; duos like the Righteous Brothers and the Everly Brothers, and great groups like the Temptations, the Beach Boys, and Smokey Robinson and the Miracles. When you’ve got a show that goes everywhere from Good Golly Miss Molly to La Bamba, from Midnight Train To Georgia to Witchcraft, it’s, – to quote a song we use – Unforgettable!”

“From the very first conceptual meeting, over two years ago now, I knew Michael had something special with his concept for Pompadour,” says Kevin Black, who will act as the show’s co-director and choreographer. “We had never worked together before, but 15 minutes into the conversation, I knew this collaboration would be a great one!

“First and foremost, we needed a must-talented cast. After over a year of auditioning, we found our five guys who not only have incredible voices, but are also very talented dancers, tappers and play piano, sax and acoustic guitar,” Black says. “As for set design, we knew we wanted a large LED screen, allowing us limitless possibilities in our seven thematic segments. Bringing in Michael McClain and Manny Schwartzman has taken our original vision to an even more creative place. We are all looking forward to seeing our vision come to life over the next few weeks.”

Leeds and Black’s five Pompadoured guys are Anthony Massaraotto, Stephen Millet, Preston Grover, Brandon Godfrey, and Jay Wilkinson.

Pompadour will run from December 26, 2015 – January 31, 2016 at The Stage Door Theatre.
