Season Tickets Now Available for Four Exciting Productions.
BRTG_TWTP
The award-winning Women’s Theatre Project and the Boca Raton Theatre Guild have joined forces and are offering patrons the opportunity to purchase subscriptions to their productions next season.  For a total of $99, patrons will be able to attend four plays – two musicals produced by the Boca Raton Theatre Guild, and two plays presented by the Women’s Theatre Project.

Both the BRTG and TWTP operate out of the Willow Theatre at Sugar Sand Park in Boca Raton, and both companies have noted an increase in interest about the others’ productions by theatre-goers since the Women’s Theatre Project moved into the Willow to the last season.  Willow logoThe fit is a natural one, says BRTG Artistic Director Keith Garsson: “By offering to combine our four shows into one package, Sugar Sand Park has enabled theatre goers to enjoy a wide range of productions from classics to edgy new comedies. We will still be able to maintain our level of professionalism, yet we hope to reach out to a wider fan-base and encourage more cross-over between audiences loyal to both companies before The Women’s Theatre Project moved here from Fort Lauderdale.”

Genie Croft, Artistic Director of the Women’s Theatre Project agrees:   “This is another big move for us, especially since our original move last season to the Willow – and a part of our continuing growth,” she explains.  “This partnership with The Boca Raton Theatre Guild allows both companies to offer an exciting season of outstanding plays and musicals to our patrons at a very affordable price.  And it’s an extraordinary opportunity to showcase and highlight some of Florida’s best talent in drama, comedy, and musical theatre. It’s a perfect combination!”

The plays and musicals that will make up the two companies combined season are They’re Playing Our Song, the south eastern premier of Nicky Silver’s The Lyons, the current Broadway hit Pippin, and Red Hot Patriot: The Kickass Wit of Molly Ivins.  Details about each production are below.

Subscriptions to the combined Boca Raton Theatre Guild/The Women’s Theatre Project are now on sale and can be purchased by calling the Willow Theatre Box Office at 561-347-3948.  The subscription offer will expire with the final performance of They’re Playing Our Song, on November 24th.  Tickets to individual performances are also on sale.

All productions will take place in the Willow Theatre in Sugar Sand Park.  The theatre is located at 300 South Military Trail in Boca Raton, just south of Palmetto Park Road.

V. Glasgow Koste’s
I Remain… J. Austen
September 27 – 29

“…Imagination is everything…”  Jane Austen

August, 2013 Boca Raton, FL:
Sol Theatre will debut its brand new company, Evening Star Productions with a performance of V. Glasgow Koste’s  I Remain… J. Austen in a limited run from September 27th – 29th.

The play, which will star Sol Theatre alumna Ireland Glennon, posits that Jane Austen is alive and well and living any place she chooses to ‘body forth’ at the flamboyant age of 218-going-on-forever. Quirky, jubilant and curious, this Jane’s ironic and comic edge reveals a fiercely independent woman, liberated by her work’s immortality to speak her mind and open her heart.  Glennon received glowing reviews when she first played the role in the Sol Children Theatre’s production of the play last May, bringing to life a Jane  Austen, as imagined by Koste ‘not staled by custom or stereotype; facing death and the loss of love; laughing at herself; reveling in the sound and sense of language; burning with work; demanding, raging, discovering, and still growing.’

An offshoot of Sol Children Theatre, Evening Star Productions will focus on plays for more for mature audiences, and feature adult, professional actors, as well as young people working towards a career in theatre.  The company will offer serious young adult actors, stage managers, and designers the opportunity to push the boundaries of their knowledge and talent in a safe and highly professional environment; enable them to prepare for college, regional, and professional theatre companies; and offer them the opportunity to be critiqued by regional professionals and critics to receive objective evaluations vital to their personal and professional growth.Logo 1

Evening Star Productions’ I Remain…J. Austen will run from September 27th – 29th at Sol Theatre in Boca Raton.  Tickets are $15 for adults, and $10 for students.  Tickets are on sale now, and can be purchased at the Sol Theatre box office at 561-447-8829.

Praise for I Remain… J. Austen and Ireland Glennon:

“What a wonderful, wonderful production! We had the best time! Yes, the script is brilliant, but more than that, the direction, delivery, execution of that script are priceless! Ireland Glennon breathes life into a witty, down-to-earth, let’s-get-real-here Jane Austen that does not stretch the limits of disbelief. It was a privilege to watch this brilliant young woman bring the 18th century wit into 21st century Boca….”  Shefali Choksi

“What an amazing solo show.  I was transported to another time and wanted to go home and pick up her books.”  Carola Blackwood

Broward Stage Door Theatre, comedy, Coral Springs Theatre, Drama, Jonathan Tolins, The Twilight of the Golds

TwilightF1-300x150If your parents knew everything about you before you were born,
would you be here?

Suzanne Gold and her close-knit New York family are delighted to hear she is pregnant, however a (fictional) prenatal genetic test reveals that the baby will most likely be gay. The news forces the entire Gold family to confront issues of bigotry, evolution, and the limits of love.

Jonathan Tolins’ The Twilight of the Golds has been called ‘a meditation on ethics, opera, freedom of choice, and the future of the species’ (LA Times) sheathed in snappy dialogue and comedic situations. The play tackles an issue that is as current and controversial today as it was when it was first seen on Broadway in the 1990s.

Leeds head shot“The Twilight of the Golds combines biting comedy and thought provoking drama, with a light dose of opera thrown into the mix,” says director Michael Leeds.  “I think it will keep audiences riveted throughout the evening, and talking about it for days.”

The Broward Stage Door Theatre’s producer Derelle Bunn has assembled a talented cast to bring Tolins’ characters to life: James Hesse, Sarah Miller, Jeffrey Scott Leshansky, Larry Bramble, and Phyllis Spear.

James Hesse, who will play David Gold, says, “My favorite quote from the play is “When art is at its most outrageous, when it cannot be easily believed, that is when it most resembles life,” because I think it sums up the importance and theJames Hesse1 purpose of theater very nicely. Theatre is the world’s longest oral tradition; we have always needed stories to better understand the world we live in. And this play, The Twilight of the Golds, is a story the world needs to hear now. The subject matter is becoming more relevant as science is progressing and we are getting closer to “designer babies””, says Hesse. “Families may soon have to make the same decision the Gold family is making in this show.”

Phyllis Spear - c“The Twilight of the Golds is a play about the dissolution of a family,” says Phyllis Spear who will take on the role of the mother, Phyllis Gold. “The playwright has dealt with the situation with humor and pathos.  My character deals with the question of how much should we as parents be involved in our adult childrens’ lives.”

The Twilight of the Golds will run from September 20th to October 27th at The Broward Stage Door Theatre in Coral Springs.   The theatre is located at 8036 Sample Road, in Coral Springs.

Tickets for The Twilight of the Golds are $38; $16 student tickets are also available.  Tickets may be purchased at the Broward Stage Door Theatre box office at 954-344-7765 or on line at www.stagedoortheatre.com

Broward Stage Door Theatre
presents
Ken Ludwig’s
Uproarious Comedy
Moon Over Buffalo
MOB - Logo BSD“Moon Over Buffalo packs more comic genius onto the stage than anything in recent memory!”  USA Today

“Picture a down-at-their-heels theatrical family led by a drunken womanizer married to a wacky fading beauty,” says director Michael Leeds. “Toss in a deaf grandmother determined to get “back on the boards” and a daughter who’s vowed never to act again.  They band together for one last shot at stardom, performing a riotous mash up of Cyrano and Private Lives for a TV weatherman they’ve mistaken for Frank Capra!  That’s the plot of Moon Over Buffalo!”

Playwright Ken Ludwig’s madcap comedy Moon Over Buffalo will open on August 30th and run through October 6th at the The Broward Stage Door Theatre in Coral Springs.

Leeds head shotHaving already directed a very successful production of Ludwig’s Lend Me A Tenor at Stage Door, Leeds is delighted with the opportunity to tackle another one of the popular playwright’s chaotically farcical pieces: “When I read the play, I laughed out loud at every page,” he explains.  “It’s definitely a crowd pleaser!”

The cast of Moon Over Buffalo will include South Florida favorite Ken Clement, along with Michelle Foytek, Andy Quiroga, Jessica Carmen, Ed Miskie, Susan Slotoroff, Glen
Lawrence, and Miki Edelman.Ken-Clement-web

“Ken Ludwig’s plays are an actor’s dream and George is having an actor’s nightmare,” says Clement. “ Its like a gym membership with swords.  I’ve always wanted to do ‘Cyrano’ and ‘Private Lives’.  Now I get to do them both at the same time!”

Ken Ludwig is an internationally-acclaimed playwright whose work has been performed in at least 30 countries in over 20 languages. He has had 6 shows produced on Broadway and 6 in London’s West End. He has won two Laurence Olivier Awards, three Tony Award ken_ludwig_photo_2010nominations, two Helen Hayes Awards, the Edgar Award, the SETC Distinguished Career Award, and the Edwin Forrest Award for Services to the Theatre. His plays have been commissioned by the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Bristol Old Vic. His best known plays and musicals include Lend Me A Tenor, Crazy For You, Moon Over Buffalo, Leading Ladies, Twentieth Century, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, The Game’s Afoot, The Fox on the Fairway, Midsummer/Jersey, The Three Musketeers, Treasure Island and The Beaux’ Stratagem. His plays have starred Alec Baldwin, Carol Burnett, Lynn Redgrave, Mickey Rooney, Hal Holbrook, Dixie Carter, Tony Shalhoub, Anne Heche, Joan Collins, and Kristin Bell. His book, How To Teach Your Children Shakespeare, was published in June 2013 by Random House, and his work has been published by the Yale Review. He has degrees from Harvard, where he studied music with Leonard Bernstein, Haverford College and Cambridge University. For more information, please visit www.kenludwig.com .

Moon Over Buffalo will run from August 30th to October 6th at The Broward Stage Door Theatre in Coral Springs.   The theatre is located at 8036 Sample Road, in Coral Springs.  (The production will move to Byron Carlyle Theatre in Miami Beach on October 11th, and run through November 3rd).

Critical Praise for Moon Over Buffalo:

“Ken Ludwig’s Moon Over Buffalo tops the mayhem and pitch-perfect farce of his other hit, Lend Me a Tenor.”
Orange County Register

“Ken Ludwig is one of those rare contemporary playwrights who thinks in terms of old-fashioned knockabout farce, and that’s something to be cherished.”
The New York Times

“The funniest show in New York … The comedy has audiences rolling in the aisles. The second act has a show-within-a-show spoof of Private Lives with everybody in the wrong costumes reading the wrong lines. This has to be one of the most hysterical things ever put onstage. I have seen Moon Over Buffalo three times! I expect you to see it once.”
New York Post (Liz Smith)

“Moon Over Buffalo is hilarious! Ludwig stuffs his play with comic invention, running gags and neat sense of absurdity. An evening of farcical delight. Go and enjoy!”
New York Post (Clive Barnes)

The South Florida Writers Association will present My Name Is Solamae, a musical adaptation of the first volume of Author/Playwright Linda Cardinal Schneider’s popular childrens’ book series The Little Mouse Solamae. The play, which won the 2011 South Florida Writer’s Association Playwriting contest, will be directed by Michelle Cote, and will feature The Brown Sisters. My Name Is Solamae will be performed on August 10th at 2pm at The Roxy Theatre in Miami.

My Name Is Solamae is a quickly paced musical with serious undertones. The play follows the escapades of the plucky little mouse, Solamae, who challenges those she encounters to always do their best. The themes of the play are direct and unmistakable – the heroine’s journey; overcoming adversity, and man (or mouse) against nature.  With a cast of eight, a narrator, and a chorus of three, this delightful musical, will appeal to adults and children alike.  It is packed with soulful melodies and lighthearted lyrics composed by the late Mark Philip Poncy (Makeover).

Linda Cardinal Schneider- PlaywrightLinda Cardinal Schneider graduated Summa Cum Laude from Barry University with a Bachelor’s of Liberal Studies degree in Literature and Humanities in May of 2011 and is currently pursuing a Master’s of Science degree in Organizational Learning and Leadership at Barry University.  Her essay, “The Path to Silence: The Uses of Meditation,” tied for first place in the Sigma Tau Delta International English Honor Society Writing Contest and was published in What Oft Was Thought, a literary compilation published by the Alpha Alpha Xi Chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, Inc. Ms. Schneider was appointed Website Editor for the Buccaneer, Barry University’s Newspaper, where she also served as a staff writer.
