The Award-winning musical to run at the Delray Beach Center for the Arts/Crest Theatre

October 6, 2015

DELRAY BEACH, FL: Entr’acte Theatrix, whose recent productions of Into the Woods, Avenue Q, Spamalot, and The Rocky Horror Show have consistently filled the Crest Theatre, will present Mel Brooks’ Young Frankenstein from October 22nd through November 1st at the popular Delray Beach venue.

It's Alive 1A wickedly inspired re-imagining of the Frankenstein legend, Brooks’ comedy masterpiece follows bright young Dr. Frankenstein (that’s Fronkensteen!) as he attempts to complete his grandfather’s masterwork and bring a corpse to life. Together with his oddly shaped and endearing helper Igor (that’s Eye-gor), his curvaceous lab assistant Inga, and in spite of his incredibly self-involved madcap fiancé Elizabeth, Frankenstein succeeds in creating a monster — but not without scary and quite often hilarious complications.

Young Frankenstein was Mel Brooks’ follow-up to his hit musical The Producers, and audience reaction to the production was consistently positive, much to his delight: “I love what they do,” Brooks said in an interview shortly after the show opened. “The audience knows Young Frankenstein the movie; they didn’t know The Producers. They all neigh when anyone on stage says “Frau Blucher”. And they can’t wait for the Blind Hermit to spill the hot soup on the monster’s lap. It’s great to see the audience play ping-pong with the actors.”

“Young Frankenstein allows Entr’acte Theatrix an excellent opportunity to introduce this group of young actors to the genius of Mel Brooks,” explains the company’s founder and producer Vicki Halmos. “He’s one of our foremost American comedy writers. We introduced the company to the British comedy of Monty Python with our production of Spamalot a couple of years ago, and Brooks’ work is a natural follow-up to that. We drilled them in workshops to land the comedy and study the contrasts.”

Several Young Frankenstein cast members were part of Halmos’ Palm Beach Principal Players group several years ago, and are now back with freshly minted theatre degrees, and looking for the on-stage experience Entr’acte provides.

Kevin Black

Kevin Black

Kevin Black, who has helmed a number of Entr’acte’s productions, will direct the show, and Roger Blankenship has taken on the task of musical direction.

“I’m really impressed with this cast’s preparedness”, says Black. He met them after they’d completed their comedy improv workshops, which were run by Seth Trucks, a graduate of London’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. “I found them to be delightfully bonded – with the material, and with each other.”

Roger Blankenship - Musical Director

Roger Blankenship – Musical Director

“I had been a fan of the movie, but did not know it was made into a musical,” says Blankenship.  “It was a shock to learn that Mel Brooks also wrote the music!  And it is good!! AND we have the singers to bring it to life on stage!!!”.

Cast members include Robyn Eli Brenner (Frederick Frankenstein), Victoria Lauzun (Inga), Christopher Lam (The Creature), Greg Halmos (Igor), Carlo Sabusap (Inspector Kemp), Cindy Thagard (Frau Blucher), Melissa Whitworth (Elizabeth), and Ross Parris (Dr. Victor Frankenstein). Also cast are Lara Williams, Phillip Andrew, Maryann Whims, Mary Grace Tesoriero, Nick Williams, Jonathan Nieto, Katie Frederickson, and Alexander Schettino.

Entr’acte Theatrix is a not-for-profit, semi-professional, showcase company providing opportunities for emerging theatre artists, both on-stage and backstage. The fourteen year old company gives students of college or post-graduate programs on a professional trajectory with a goal of working in the profession a chance to gain experience in their area of training or interest. Entr’acte, as the name suggests, is the “next step,” from classroom to career, and provides the young theatre artist with one of his or her all-important first professional resume-building credits.

Young Frankenstein will run from October 22nd to November 1st at the Delray Beach Center for the Arts’ Crest Theatre, 51 N. Swinton Avenue, Delray Beach, Florida 33444. Tickets are on sale now, and can be purchased on line at: www.entractetheatrix.org or www.delraycenterforthearts.org, or by phone at 561-243-7922, Ext. 1. Tickets are $30; student rates ($20) and group rates ($22) are also available.

If a picture is worth a 1,000 words – what about a song? Can a picture inspire a song – or fifteen? In 35mm, each photo creates an unique song, moments frozen in time; a glimmer of a life unfolding; a glimpse of something happening. A stunning new multimedia musical which explores a groundbreaking new concept in musical theatre… This intricately woven collection of stories told through song re-imagines what the modern American musical can be.

From the author of Out of Focus comes this hilarious spoof of the best Agatha Christie traditions, with an assembled cast of characters guaranteed to delight: Bunting the butler, an English Colonel with the prerequisite stiff upper lip, a shady French art dealer and his moll, bumbling local inspectors and a well meaning local sleuth who seems to attract murder – they’re all here, and all caught up in the side-splitting antics which follow the mysterious death of the owner of a country manor house. But will the murderer be unmasked before everyone else has met their doom, or will audiences die laughing first?

If you thought you knew the story of ‘The Princess and The Pea,’ you may be in for a walloping surprise! Did you know, for instance, that Princess Winnifred actually swam the moat to reach Prince Dauntless the Drab? Or that Lady Larken’s love for Sir Harry provided a rather compelling reason that she reach the bridal altar post haste? Or that, in fact, it wasn’t the pea at all that caused the princess a sleepless night? Carried on a wave of wonderful songs, by turns hilarious and raucous, romantic and melodic, this rollicking spin on the familiar classic of royal courtship and comeuppance provides for some side-splitting shenanigans. Chances are you’ll never look at fairy tales quite the same way again.

In the early 1960s Detroit was on the move.  The distinctive sound that emerged from the city was the sound of young America.  That music has left an indelible stamp on the heart, soul, and mind of several generations.  The Soul of Motor City brings new life to those classics made famous by such artists as The Four Tops, Martha Reeves, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, The Temptations, The Supremes, and many more.

Present Laughter was described by playwright Noel Coward as “a series of semi-autobiographical pyrotechnics.”  The play covers several days in the life of the successful and self-obsessed Garry Essendine as he prepares to travel for a touring commitment in Africa.  Amid a series of events bordering on farce, Garry has to deal with women who want to seduce him, placate his long-suffering secretary and his estranged wife, cope with a crazed young playwright, and overcome his impending mid-life crisis (since he recently turned forty.)

Dave Hanson’s comedy about two understudies who are waiting to ‘go on’ in a production of Samuel Beckett’s classic Waiting for Godot – itself a play about two men who wait for a man they’ve never met, who never arrives – is not in any way an adaptation or interpretation of Beckett’s work, but rather a brand new play that examines theatre, acting, and art in a unique, clever, and extremely funny way.

A Map of Virtue is a symmetrical play guided by a bird statue, pivoting around an encounter with and dissection of evil. Part interview, part comedy, part middle-night-middle-forest horror story, the play was awarded an Obie in 2012, and described as “one of the most terrifying plays of the past decade” by Alexis Soloski in The New York Times.

Dust off your disco shoes and get ready to have fun with puns. Thinking Cap Theatre will put its own unique spin on one of the theatre’s most beloved classics when it presents Oscar Wilde’s bristling comedy The Importance of Being Earnest at the Vanguard Sanctuary for the Arts. Director Nicole Stodard has set the play in December 1978 – in disco-era New York City. The show promises to be punny, prurient, and pointed, informed by both 1970’s pop culture and social issues.

In her powerful and often emotional award-winning play Women’s Minyan (based on a true story), novelist and playwright Naomi Ragen explores the strict rules that govern the lives of Orthodox Jewish women, and in particular, how religious leaders can twist biblical and other holy writings to suit their objectives. But more importantly, Ragen – who once described herself as “a very religious woman who relates to religion with great seriousness” – sheds light on the subject of domestic abuse, especially when it occurs in a close-knit, patriarchal community that prefers to keep its hidden secrets.

1455725116-BABY_BOOM_BOOM_TICKETSComedy Central/National Lampoon star Tommy Koenig’s Baby Boom Baby has been called wildly entertaining, touching, and very, very funny!  It has also been called well-written, high energy and invigorating.  Koenig will bring his one man “‘musicomedy’- a flashback through our times and the music that defined them” to the Palm Beaches theatre from April 28th through May 15th.

Baby Boom Baby is Koenig’s story, told from his distinctly Baby Boomer perspective. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1953, the year Rock and Roll was born.  The son of a musician who played with Glenn Miller during WW2, Koenig was greatly influenced by chance meetings with John F. Kennedy and later George Carlin, and mostly by what the Beatles brought – the influence of music on Boomers’ culture and personal choices.  In Baby Boom Baby Koenig recounts the years he struggled to keep up with the changing times, just missing Woodstock by a few miles; the rites of passage of College, Travel, Sex and Drugs; and the ever changing cultural and political landscape that music unleashed as it morphed from Disco to Punk to MTV to Rap and beyond.

What happens after ‘happily ever after’?

May 26, 2015

DELRAY BEACH, FL:  Into the Woods, the multi-award-winning (Tony Awards, Drama Desk Awards, Olivier Awards) musical by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine, skillfully interweaves several classic fairy tales into one epic story that shows what happens when things get real in the fairy-tale world. Entr’Acte Theatrix’ upcoming production of this acclaimed Broadway musical will run at the Delray Beach Center for the Arts’ Crest Theatre from June 18 through June 28th.

Sondheim and Lapine’s tale involves a baker and his wife who, unable to have the children they so badly desire, agree to complete a number of “errands” for a witch who promises to grant them their wish if they’re successful. During their journey, they encounter Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, Cinderella and Jack (of Beanstalk notoriety) – each of whom has their own wish. All the storybook characters discover that wishes granted often come with a hefty price.

Kevin Black, who directed Entr’Acte’s recent successful productions of Spamalot, Tommy, and The Rocky Horror Show has taken on the directorial and choreographic duties for Into the Woods with his usual enthusiasm:

Kevin Black

Kevin Black

“In 1988, I saw the national tour of Into the Woods with a group of friends, and I was mesmerized”, he says. “Here was a story of hope, morals and life lessons… It was my introduction into the world of Sondheim and I was hooked – the brilliant genius of Sondheim was unmistakable in this show. In 2012, I directed Side by Side by Sondheim at The Miami Stage Door Theatre and now I have the opportunity to direct Into the Woods for Entr’Acte Theatrix. This time, the objective is to create an entertaining evening of musical theatre that even an audience who has never experienced Sondheim will enjoy,” he continues. “We’re taking a very comedic approach to the show, brightening the tempos and creating a modern day look in set and costume design. We’ve assembled a stellar cast of talented actors who prove to me every day that tackling a mega Sondheim musical like Into the Woods may prove challenging, but oh so worth it.”

Entr’Acte Theatrix’ Into the Woods cast includes some familiar faces, along with a number of talented newcomers. Sharyn Peoples who played The Lady of the Lake in Entr’Acte Theatrix’ recent sold-out production of Spamalot will play The Witch, Justin Schneyer, who played Brad in Entr’Acte’s October 2014 production of The Rocky Horror Show will play The Baker, and John Costanzo (King Arthur in Spamalot) will play Cinderella’s father. Other returning cast members are Calvin Bankert (Jack), Sahid Pabon (Cinderella’s Prince), Brielle Lysaght (Stepsister), Christian Ortega (Rapunzel’s Prince), Jenna Paige Gagliardo (Jack’s Mother), Greg Halmos (The Wolf), Christi Oliver (Stepmother), and Rio Peterson (The Steward). Newcomers include Melissa Bibliowicz (Cinderella), Victoria Lauzun (The Baker’s Wife), Jen Chia (Little Red Riding Hood), Lindsey Johr (Rapunzel), Devin Tupler (Narrator), and Brittany Payne (Stepsister)

Roger Blankenship - Musical Director

Roger Blankenship – Musical Director

Roger Blankinship will provide musical direction for the production.

Tickets are $25; $20 for groups of 15 or more; or $10 Student Rush – with I.D.  To celebrate Father’s Day, ticket prices for the Sunday, June 21st, 8 pm performance will be ‘Buy One/Get One Free’.
Into the Woods will run for 12 performances only, from June 18 – June 28 at the Crest Theatre at the Delray Beach Center for the Arts. The theatre is located at 51 North Swinton Avenue, Delray Beach, 33444. Tickets are on sale now, and are available by calling 561-243-7922, ext. 1.

“From the top: Five, Six, Seven, Eight…”
A Timeless Classic comes to Stage Door Theatre

April 1, 2015
Margate, FL: Stage Door Theatre will follow up their hit production of Cabaret with another classic musical. Their production of A Chorus Line will open April 8th and run through May 17th.

One of the longest running shows of all time, A Chorus Line evolved from several workshop sessions with Broadway dancers (known as ‘gypsies’) taped by choreographer Tony Stevens. The dancers’ frank discussions, admissions, and often painful revelations about their experiences, hopes, and dreams formed the basis of the play, which is set on a bare stage of an anonymous Broadway theatre during auditions for an upcoming musical. A Chorus Line provides a window to a backstage world most theatre patrons have no idea exists.

Initially directed and choreographed by the legendary Michael Bennett, A Chorus Line was a critical and box office hit; it received twelve Tony Award nominations, and won nine. It also was awarded the 1976 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. And a number of composer Marvin Hamlisch’s songs, including ‘What I Did for Love’, and ‘One’, became ‘pop’ as well as Broadway standards.

Kevin Black

Kevin Black

“I was 12. I had just starting taking dance classes,” explains the show’s director/choreographer Kevin Black. “My parents bought us tickets to a touring production of a show I had never heard of…A Chorus Line. As soon as I heard “5,6,7,8” and the lights revealed a stage full of dancers, well, I was mesmerized. This was me, this was my life. Nine years later I had the privilege of playing Mark for Jean Ann Ryan Productions, even if only as a two week replacement. And thus ends my Chorus Line story…until now. When Dee Bunn asked me if I’d like to direct A Chorus Line, I jumped on the chance. How could I not? This was my opportunity to revisit and old friend and it’s been very nice to become reacquainted.

“When I was offered the project my first immediate thought was “How could I possibly do this better than Michael Bennett?” he continues. “Well the answer was a resounding “I can’t!”. His brilliant staging, patterns, moods and even that iconic choreography were flawless. So, rather than reinvent the wheel, I decided to spruce it up a bit, put some of my touches on it and let this brilliant piece of theatre speak for itself. And just like an old friend that you haven’t seen in years, the reunion has been nothing short of fantastic.”

Black has assembled a talented cast to populate the Stage Door ‘line’:

Ronen Bay, fresh off his critically praised role as the Emcee in Stage Door’s recent production of Cabaret says: “I’m thrilled to have had the privilege to perform this spectacular show now twice – and what a beautiful show it is. It has so much heart – it’s not only the amount of talent on the stage, but the realness of it all. The auditioning process, the competition, the heartaches, and that glorious moment when you book a show.”

Shenise Nunez, who was recently seen in Stage Door’s hit I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change will play Diana Morales in the show agrees: “This show has so much heart,” she says. “It’s not only the amount of talent on the stage, but the realness of it all. The auditioning process, the competition, the heartaches, and that glorious moment when you book a show. It’s all there. I’ve played Maggie in this show, and having a chance to play Diana… It’s all I could have ever dreamed of. Diana’s character is talented, smart, tough, and stubborn, but she has one of the biggest hearts on the line.”

Other cast members include Brooke Martino as Sheila, Andy Fiacco as Zach, John Dempsey as Bobby, Hugo E. Moreno as Larry, Kayley Stevens as Cassie, Emily Tarallo as Lois, Mike Wallace as Frank, Kara Krichman as Val, Alexandra Dow as Vicki, and Keagan Tanner Cerny as Mark.   Chrissi Ardito will work with Kevin Black on the choreography.

A Chorus Line will run from April 8 – May 17 at Stage Door Theatre in Margate. The theatre is located at 8036 Sample Road, in Coral Springs.

Tickets for A Chorus Line are $38 – $42; $16 student tickets are also available. Tickets may be purchased at the Broward Stage Door Theatre box office at 954-344-7765 or on line at http://www.stagedoorfl.org.

Classic Quotes from A Chorus Line:

Zach: Tell me about the Bronx.
Diana: What’s to tell about the Bronx? It’s uptown and to the right.

Zach: What made you start dancing?
Diana: Who knows? I’m Puerto Rican. We jump around a lot.

Larry: Don’t you know the combination, Sheila?
Sheila: I knew it when I was in front!

Bobby: I couldn’t catch a ball if it had Elmer’s Glue on it. And wouldn’t my father have to be this big ex-football hero. Well, he was so humiliated, he didn’t know what to tell his friends, so he told them all I had Polio. On Father’s Day, I used to limp for him.

Bobby: I was always thinking up these spectacular ways how to kill myself. But then I realized – to commit suicide in Buffalo is redundant.

Exciting, Exotic, and Electrifying… Cirquesco!

Cirquesco - trioFebruary 4, 2015
BOCA RATON, FL
: Kevin Black’s Cirquesco has been described as captivating, stunning, exotic, intense, amazing, and just plain fun.   Cirquesco is a unique combination of song, dance, acrobatics, and humor, and a perfect example of what the multi-talented and extremely creative producer/director/choreographer brings to the South Florida Theatre scene. The production will run for three performances only – February 20th, 21st, and 22nd, at the Willow Theatre in Boca Raton’s Sugar Sand Park.

“Cirquesco explores our most treasured emotion… love,” says Black, “…through the journey of our Lead Player, a somewhat lost soul searching for meaning in this Mad, Mad World.”  Contemporary choreography, an electrifying score, and elaborate and beautiful costuming – all created, arranged, and assembled by Black – combine to make Circquesco a “feast for the eyes, the ears, and the soul.”

Mimi J HeadshotSinger Mimi J is an enthusiastic participant in the production:
“It’s amazing to once again be in the midst of Kevin’s visionary brilliance,” she says. “He never ceases to introduce a new vibe of theatre to South Florida that is rarely seen and the quality is similar to what you can expect from the shows in Las Vegas and New York. Cirquesco is a Cirque du Soleil style show that incorporates the artistic elements of the European big top circuses mixed with a modern flare. The music is rhythmically charged and texturally dynamic and the specialty acts grapple the senses and keep you at the edge of your seat…a great spectacle for folks of all ages.”

Kasey J. HughesSinger/dancer Kasey J. Hughes will also be featured. Hughes has an extensive background nationally as well as internationally. He has regularly been a featured performer in the Radio City Christmas Spectacular, as well as at the Moulin Rouge in Paris, and various Disney productions in Orlando and Tokyo.

Kevin Black is the owner and artistic director of Kevin Black Productions. His expertise, experience, and creativity in directing and choreography, as well as in set, costume, and lighting design have built him a solid reputation as one of the top ‘go-to guys’ in South Florida. Kevin’s most recent work includes 8 Track, I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change, and Rags at The Plaza Theatre in Manalapan. He directed and choreographed Spamalot, Tommy, and The Rocky Horror Show for Entr’Acte Theatrix performing at The Crest Theatre in Delray Beach.  Kevin has also produced South Florida tours of La Cage Aux Folles, The Jazz Singer, Smokey Joe’s Café, Funny Girl, Victor/Victoria, Cabaret and Dreamgirls. And his recent creations for Stage Door Theatre, On the Radio, starring Ballroom’s Mimi J. and What’s New Pussycat? The Soundtrack of an Era, were extremely successful and well reviewed. Kevin’s work can currently be seen at the Villa de Palmar Resorts in Cabo, Mexico; Kevin is also the Artistic Director for CAST (Career in the Arts, School of Talent) located in Cooper City, Florida.

Mimi J. was born and raised in Miami. She is a professional singer currently performing in the South Florida tri-county area, and has been the recipient of numerous awards in vocal performance. She received her degrees in Musical Theater from the University of Central Florida Conservatory Theater in Orlando, where she attended on the Walt Disney Scholarship. Mimi has been a member of the gospel recording group, Revelation S.E.E.D. founded and led by Margaret Reynolds of KC and the Sunshine Band, and has sung background for a number of award-winning artists including Gloria Estefan, Bobby McFerrin, Betty Wright, Ralph Tresvant and Johnny Gill of the R&B group New Edition, and Quan Howell of the gospel group Sounds of Blackness. January 9-11

Straight from the streets of Miami comes the hottest party in town!

December, 23, 2014:
BOCA RATON, FL: The Willow Theatre in Sugar Sand Park will resonate with the sounds of music in January. No… not ‘those’ sounds of music, but sounds unique to South Florida… fast paced, exciting, and exotic.

51462f62be1b8Renowned producer/director/choreographer Kevin Black’s Ballroom: South Beach Style will run at the Willow for four performances only, from January 9th through January 11th. Stylish and sexy, full of the Miami beat and heat, the show features intricate ballroom dancing, along with Salsa, Merengue, Rhumba, Mambo, and Jive, all accompanied by carefully selected popular music appropriate to each style and era.

Beginning 1940s, the heyday of South Beach night life when stars like Frank, Dean, and Sammy graced the stages of large showrooms at The Fontainebleau Hotel and other popular tourist attractions, Ballroom: South Beach Style progresses chronologically, featuring music by Elvis Presley, The Beatles, KC and The Sunshine Band, Madonna, Phil Collins, Gloria Estefan, and Santana. Evoking the sounds of Miami Vice, Whitney Houston (who filmed The Bodyguard at The Fountainebleau), Celia Cruz, Gloria Estefan, Ricky Martin, into the 90s when Latin music crossed over to the pop chart, led by The Miami Sound Machine – the entire production is rooted in South Beach and Miami.

Singers Mimi J. and Shelley Keelor, and dancers Rome Saladino and Marina Putane, along with Teddy Talbot, Luke Stockton, Kelly Pryor, Jenny Hegarty, Andreas Lutzner, and Craig Strang are slated to participate in the production.

Ballroom: South Beach Style has toured and thrilled audiences throughout the United States for the past three years. These four performances are the show’s first at the Willow – invited there because of its well known artistry and popularity.

“Audiences love this show,” says producer/choreographer Black. “With the continued popularity of Dancing with the Stars and So You Think You Can Dance, more and more people are aware of how difficult, yet how very entertaining this kind of production is. Our cast is immensely talented, the music is amazing, and our costumes are gorgeous,” he continues. “We’ve had nothing but the most positive feedback and reviews since we began.”

What’s New Pussycat? The Soundtrack of an Era
August 22 – September 28

Pussycat-Soundtrack-(Karen-These Boots Are Made For Walkin’ So let’s go Downtown taking The Long And Winding Road to A Bridge Over Troubled Waters.  Then I’ve Got Georgia On My Mind, so I’ll be Leavin’ On A Jet Plane with My Girl, My Guy and Eleanor Rigby.  But if you’re California Dreamin’, I’m feelin’ those Good Vibrations so just Walk Like A Man and let’s Hit The Road, Jack.  YOU Don’t Have To Say You Love Me ’cause Our Day Will Come and we’re gonna be Happy Together.
How do I know…? I Heard It Through The Grapevine!

August 12, 2014
Coral Springs, Florida

When Broward Stage Door Theatre’s artistic director Derelle Bunn mentioned to director Michael Leeds and choreographer Kevin Black that she had an open time slot for a show, and asked them if they’d be interested in ‘doing something’, they jumped at the chance. “Kevin and I have wanted to work together for a while, and this was a terrific opportunity,” says Leeds. “And then, of course, the question became – what should we do?!”

The result of their collaboration is What’s New Pussycat? The Soundtrack of an Era, which will open at the Broward Stage Door Theatre on August 22nd, and run through September 28th.

“What’s New, Pussycat was originally going to be a revue of just Burt Bacharach songs,” Leeds explains.  “But as Kevin and I started listening to Bacharach’s music, we kept being distracted by other great songs of the same era.  So we decided to expand the show to include The Mamas & The Papas, Simon & Garfunkel, Petula Clark, Dusty Springfield, Etta James, Ray Charles, The Righteous Brothers, The Fifth Dimension and all those Motown greats like The Four Tops, The Temptations, The Supremes, The Ronettes, as well as incredible composers and writers like Henry Mancini, Michel LeGrand and of course, Burt Bacharach!

“Creating the piece took careful deliberation, Leeds continues: “From past experience, both Kevin and I have learned that though there are no “rules” to creating a musical revue, there are some guidelines.  First, of course, is what songs are the most popular; the songs the audience is coming to hear.”

Leeds and Black have tapped Carbonell Award-winner Eric Alsford as musical director/arranger for What’s New Pussycat?, and have assembled a top-notch cast for their production. Shane Tanner, Mike Westrich, Clay Cartland and Leah Sessa all have impressive South Florida resumes. Two additional performers from New York will round out the six-person ensemble.

Grab your love beads and head on over for the
grooviest party in South Florida!

June 2, 2014
Coral Springs, Florida

When award-winning vocalist Mimi J. sought to develop a one-woman show about the women of soul who influenced her, she immediately turned to her good friend, Carbonell-nominated director/choreographer Kevin Black. They tossed around a number of ideas, but they kept coming back to the music of the 70s – music they both love. Together they came up with the concept, the title, and the song choices for On the Radio: Sounds of the 70s.

What had evolved was an evening of unforgettable songs from an unforgettable decade of music produced by an array of artists from ABBA to Carly Simon, to Gladys Knight, John Lennon, and Stevie Wonder. On the Radio: Sounds of the 70s is a trip down memory lane – back to the time of bell bottoms, mood rings, smiley faces, and memorable music. Among the songs that will be featured in the show are “Close to You”, “Car Wash”, “Dancing Queen”, “Let it Be”, “Nobody Does It Better”, “Proud Mary”, “Midnight Train to Georgia”, “Hopelessly Devoted”, and “I Will Survive”.

“We had about 45 minutes of material,” Mimi explains. “And we wanted to rent a theatre to make a DVD and a demo video, so we met with Derelle Bunn about renting the Stage Door Theatre.”

Bunn was intrigued by the premise of a show based on 70’s music and encouraged Mimi and Kevin to continue to develop the idea.

“The challenge,” Black says, “was to try to figure out how to keep it interesting. Because we didn’t want audiences to think the show is going to be two hours of Disco. It’s definitely not!”

“Kevin and I go to the theatre together a lot,” Mimi continues. “And I’ve never seen anything like what we’re planning with this show – we’re really excited about it. We also feel there’s a need to get another experience out there… to to diversify the community. This show introduces diversity and ethnicity! We’re using local talent, and creating a different look and vibe on the stage for our community. Audiences are going to feel that Soul Train vibe when they’re sitting in their seats!”

Joey Taylor and Luke Stockton have also been cast in the production.

Entr’Acte Theatrix will present Monty Python’s Spamalot from June 20th through the 30th at the Crest Theatre at the Delray Center for the Arts.  The play is “lovingly ripped off” from the 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail, with a book by Python Eric Idle, and a score by Idle and John Du Prez. Like the film, it’s a totally irreverent and typically Pythonesque parody of the Arthurian Legend:

The legendary King Arthur, accompanied by his faithful servant, Patsy, travels through his kingdom, collecting members for his Knights of the Round Table.  Some of his recruits include Sir Robin, a collector of plague victims, and Lance a ‘large, handsome, and incredibly violent man’, who agree to join him – Lance ‘for the fighting’, and Robin for ‘the singing and dancing’.  The Lady of the Lake (and her Laker Girls), Sir Bedevere, and Sir Dennis Galahad eventually join Arthur in his search for The Holy Grail. The show also features a bevy of beautiful girls (of course), not to mention ‘cows, killer rabbits, and French people’.  As The Sunday Times observed, Monty Python’s Spamalot ‘raises silliness to an art form’.

John_CostanzoEntr’Acte Theatrix has assembled a talented cast to populate the surreal world of Python.  The suitably kingly John Costanzo (left) will take on the role of Arthur; Sharyn Peoples will play The Lady of the Lake; and Carbonell nominee Mike Westrich (right) will don Mike W HeadshotSir Galahad’s armor. Other cast members include Darrick Penny as Sir Robin, and Mike James as Sir Bedevere.

“Spamalot is one of the most cleverly written comedies of Broadway’s recent history,” says the show’s director Kevin Black. “I have always wanted to direct Spamalot and I’m so happy to finally have the chance.” We have assembled a very talented cast,” he continues, “Including Mike Westrich and the amazing Sharyn Peoples as The Lady of the Lake. Every rehearsal is a barrel of laughs; we are all having so much fun. I have no doubt that fans of Monty Python, and even those who have never seen this iconic British humor, will have a blast at the show.”

When asked for a comment about the show, Spamalot’s musical director Roger Blankenship is equally enthusiastic:  “The music is fun to sing, and to hear – and this cast is definitely up to it!”

Monty Python’s Spamalot will run for 12 performances only, from June 20th to 30th, at the Crest Theatre at the Delray Beach Center for the Arts at Old School Square.  The theatre is located at 51 North Swinton Avenue, Delray Beach, 33444.  Tickets are on sale now, and are available by calling 561-243-7922.
