PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL: Comedy Central/National Lampoon star Tommy Koenig’s show Baby Boomer Baby’s well received and successful run at the Plaza Theatre in 2016 prompted PGA Arts Center producers Dana Matthow and Philip Roger Roy to approach the multi-talented actor/comedian about returning to South Florida for a limited engagement at their newly opened Palm Beach Gardens theatre. Koenig’s one man ‘musicomedy’, which just completed a successful engagement at the Herberger Theater Center in Phoenix, Arizona, is a flashback through our times and the music that defined them”. Baby Boomer Baby will open at the PGA Arts Center on April 27^th.

Baby Boomer Baby has been called well written, wildly entertaining, high energy, touching, and very, very funny. It is Koenig’s story, told from his distinctly Baby Boomer perspective. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1953, the year Rock and Roll was born, and was raised in Rockaway Beach, the son of a musician who played with Glenn Miller during World War II. Koenig was greatly influenced by chance meetings with John F. Kennedy and later George Carlin, and mostly by what the Beatles brought – the influence of music on Boomers’ culture and personal choices. In Baby Boomer Baby Koenig recounts the years he struggled to keep up with the changing times, just missing Woodstock by a few miles; the rites of passage of College, Travel, Sex, and Drugs; and the ever changing cultural and political landscape that music unleashed as it morphed from Disco to Punk to MTV to Rap and beyond.

During the show Koenig channels dozens of well-known – and original – characters in a one man tour de force spanning 7 decades. With original songs and parodies of everyone from The Beatles to Lady Gaga, and from Doo Wop to Hip Hop, Koenig’s impressions include Elton John, Billy Joel, Blondie, Willie Nelson, Tina Turner, Bruce Springsteen, The Bee Gees, the Eagles, among others.

Tommy Koenig was voted ‘Best New Comic’ by the New York Daily News in 1980. The multi-faceted comedian, actor, writer, and teacher cut his comedic teeth in such iconic venues as Dangerfield’s, The Copacabana, and The Playboy Club, where he opened for Jazz greats like Lionel Hampton and Damita Jo. He also appeared frequently on stand-up comedy shows (A&E’s Comedy on the Road from London, Jamaica, New York and Los Angeles, as well as Evening at the Improv, MTV’s Half Hour Comedy Hour, and Showtime’s Comedy Club All Stars. Koenig was one of the rare comics to appear on Don Kirschner’s Rock Concert; he has opened for Warren Zevon, Alvin Lee, Bonnie Raitt, Dave Mason, Los Lobos, and Joan Jett. He has also guest-starred on numerous television programs – from Miami Vice‘ to Boston Legal and from ‘Not Necessarily The News to The Onion News Network. Koenig co-starred in the med-school spoof film Stitches, and was part of Mel Brooks’ ensemble casts of Robin Hood-Men in Tights and Dracula – Dead and Loving It.

Koenig has written for the National Lampoon, and starred in two of their rock and roll comedy stage shows: If We’re Late Start Without Us and Class of ’86 (which was filmed for Showtime). He also teaches Stand Up Comedy at the Comics Studio in New York. One of his students, Brad Zimmerman, has just completed a successful run at the PGA Arts Center in My Son the Waiter: A Jewish Tragedy.

Baby Boomer Baby was first conceived and performed in 2011 at The Santa Barbara Theatre in Puerto Vallarta. It made its US debut in 2013 as a benefit for victims of Hurricane Sandy, and its Off Broadway debut at Stage 72. It returned to Puerto Vallarta at The Boutique Theatre in 2014. The show also played at The Downstairs Cabaret Theatre in Rochester and Shea’s Smith Theatre in Buffalo, New York, The Stateside Paramount Theatre in Austin, Texas, Sparta Avenue Stage, in Sparta, New Jersey, and The Tiawaga Theatre in Oswego, New York.

MARGATE, FL: Stage Door Theatre will present The Kid From Brooklyn: The Danny Kaye Story, from February 24 though April 9 in the larger of their two theatres.

Based on the turbulent and triumphant life of the multi-talented singer, actor, comedian, and philanthropist, this intimate musical portrayal chronicles Danny Kaye’s career and his relationships on and off the stage – from an undisciplined improvisational comic to his success under the guidance of his wife, Sylvia Fine.

The Kid From Brooklyn: The Danny Kaye Story includes many of Kaye’s signature songs, including “Tchaikovsky,” “By Jingo,” “Minnie the Moocher” and “Inchworm”, and features the work of songwriters Kurt Weill, Ira Gershwin, Rodgers and Hart, Frank Loesser and Cole Porter, and of course, Sylvia Fine.

Peter J. Loewy

The production will be directed by Peter J. Loewy, with musical direction by David Nagy. Loewy, who owns and operates the Forum Theatre in Metuchen, New Jersey, directed three productions in South Florida in 2016, two for Stage Door Theatre, and one for Pigs Do Fly Productions. All three were Carbonell Recommended.

Loewy has cast Joshua Kolb as Danny Kaye, and Kimberly Abrams as Sylvia Fine.

Kolb is pleased and excited to have been chosen to portray the iconic entertainer: “If Danny Kaye had not been born,” a Hollywood writer once observed, “no one could possibly have invented him. It would have been stretching credibility far past the breaking point.” Kolb quotes. “Telling the story of such a man, therefore is stretching me just as far as an actor. This opportunity is comfortably the biggest challenge I have ever attempted, and I only hope to give the audience as entertaining a remembrance of the man as they, and he, deserve.”

“During the rehearsal process for this show, Sylvia Fine became a personal hero of mine,” says Kimberly Adams. “She was a shockingly brilliant woman who did it all – she was Danny Kaye’s wife, the mother of their child, his career manager, and the composer/lyricist of all of his most famous songs. She is the reason Danny Kaye became a household name, and it’s truly an honor to bring her to life on stage.”

Brad Rakushin and Ashley Brooke will play various characters throughout the play, including Samuel Goldwyn, Cole Porter, Billy Rose, Laurence Olivier, Eve Arden, Kitty Carlisle, and Vivien Leigh.

The Kid From Brooklyn will run from February 24 – April 9 at Stage Door Theatre. The theatre is located at 8036 Sample Road, in Margate.

LAUDERDALE, FL – Pigs do Fly Productions will return to Ft. Lauderdale’s Empire Stage with Curly Tales the first production of their third season, from March 11^th through March 27^th. There will be a preview performance on March 10^th.

Curly Tales will once again feature seven short plays chosen from numerous submissions the company received after putting out a call for works specific to their mission: To highlight vibrant healthy people over the age of fifty doing interesting things with their lives.

“When we began Pigs Do Fly with the idea of highlighting, positively, the many of us over 50, I had no idea of what to expect,” says Ellen Wacher, the company’s founder and Executive Producer. “I’m thrilled the subject has resonated with so many theater-goers. I think we’ve selected a good balance of comedies and dramas for this production – we look to keep getting better and better and happily move forward. Our audience is growing, and so are we!”

Directing duties for Curly Tales will once again be shared by Elena Maria Garcia and Gail S. Garrisan, both of whom wholeheartedly share Wacher’s vision:

“This time the plays are more personal with attention to life’s details,” Garcia says. “And I’m excited to work with former Pigs cast members as well as new ones. Let’s see where this new journey will take us.”

“It’s both a pleasure and a challenge to find new works that exemplify the mission of Pigs Do Fly,” Garrisan explains. “Working on this affords me the opportunity become acquainted with a number of talented playwrights with whose work I was not familiar.” This will be Garrisan’s second Pigs Do Fly production.

Local actors Brenda Aulbach, Lynn Simmons Chvotkin, Harry Marsh, Stanley Ross, Kerry Sensenbach, Elissa D. Solomon, and Carol Sussman have been cast in Curly Tales.

“Entertaining an audience with a variety of short plays is great,” says Brenda Aulbach. “But entertaining an audience with short plays about people over the age of 50 is even greater because it’s relevant. And performing in this production by Pigs do Fly that clearly values and showcases the talent and artistry of actors over the age of 50 is nothing short of an honor.”

Glenn Alterman (Yours and Mine) is the author of 29 theater related book, including 10 books of original monologues. He’s listed in the Guinness Book of World Records and RecordSetter.com for “The Most Published Original Monologues For Actors”. His plays and monologues have appeared in over 30 “Best of the Year” anthologies. He’s won The Arts and Letters Award In Drama, The Julio T. Nunez Arts Grant, The Bloomington Playwrights Project (Reva Shiner Award) and over 60 playwriting competitions. Glenn’s work’s been performed at Primary Stages, Playwrights Horizons, LaMama, Beverly Hills Rep, Pittsburgh New Works Festival, Circle Rep., and at many theaters in the U.S. and in Europe.

Sheila Cowley’s (Flowers) plays have been developed in Chicago at Chicago Dramatists and The Equity Library Theatre, in New York with Athena Theatre, March Forth and Reverie Productions, in London through American Actors UK and in Florida at American Stage, The Gorilla Theatre, Stageworks and the University of South Florida. Elena Maria Garcia (Land the Music) is a co-founder of Underdog Productions where she has adapted numerous children’s books and stories into plays for young audiences. Her adaptation of Give A Boy A Gun was produced twice in South Florida to rave reviews from students, teacher, and parents. She was also the co-founder of the all female improv troupe Big Purse and Matching Shoes as well as Separate Checks Improv Troupe, where she learned quickly how to write sketch comedy about current political and social issues. Through Underdog Productions, Elena has been able to direct, act, write, and produce her one-person show, Do You Speak Mexican? at the Fillmore Miami Beach. She is currently writing her new one person show titled, Teacher Conference: A True Story.

W.L. Newkirk (The Nude) is best known as a playwright. His recently-written, award-winning stage plays include East Lansing (Winner, Best Play, 2014 Tampa Bay Theatre Festival), 5 to 4 (Winner, Best Play, 2015 4 X 6 Fest), and In Me (Winner, 2015 Vigoda Award, Best Dramedy). He has degrees from the Ohio State University (Medicine) and Harvard University (Government), where he was a John Harvard Scholar and Lecturer. He has received numerous awards for his contributions to the arts and sciences, including Recognition from the Daniel Hanley Trust for “Courage, Leadership and Innovation.” He is a member of the Dramatists Guild.

BOCA RATON, FL: Avi Hoffman, whose recent performance as Willy Loman in Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman for the New Yiddish Rep at Off Broadway’s Castillo Theatre won consistently rave reviews, will direct Unlikely Heroes, a new play by first time playwright Dr. Charles Gluck. Hoffman, who will also act in the production, will be joined on stage by a veritable ‘Who’s Who’ of South Florida Theatre – the cast of Unlikely Heroes includes Patti Gardner, Robert Johnston, Margot Moreland, Kim Ostrenko, and Michael H. Small. The production will run from January 28^th – February 21^st at the Mizner Park Cultural Arts Center in Boca Raton.

Although the Unlikely Heroes addresses a number of serious subjects – fractured relationships versus family ties and major health issues among other things – there are numerous lighter moments interspersed throughout the play, and Dr. Gluck’s unique background played an integral part in the formation of the family and characters who populate the production: “This is my first play and it has been an amazing ride for me,” he explains. But this isn’t the first time I’ve had anything to do with show business. In my previous life I was a Gastroenterologist. And soon after I went into practice, I started doing stand-up comedy. I did that for about ten or twelve years, and I always loved to write. I’ve been a story-teller my whole life, and I’ve been a theatre nut my whole life. And my dream always was, when I got out of Medicine, that I’d move into play writing. Unlikely Heroes has been a perfect vehicle for me to integrate comedy and drama because for me, the combination of being a physician and being a stand-up comedian was very organic.”

“The way that this came about was that I was approached by Charles Gluck after a reading I did for (producer/director) Joe Adler at Gable Stage in Coral Gables,” director Hoffman explains. “He told me he had written a play – apparently his first play – and asked me if I would be willing to read it and give him my honest opinion. And I did! Avi Hoffman, who is also known for his extremely popular one man shows Too Jewish?,Too Jewish Two! , and Still Jewish After All These Years has won multiple awards for his work, including Performer of the Year ’95 by NY Press Magazine, and the prestigious Los Angeles Ovation Award as Best Actor In a Musical, 2001. He has also been nominated for both the NY Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle awards. His 2012 Carbonell Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Musical was in recognition of his work as Wilbur Turnblad in Hairspray at Actors Playhouse in Miami. Hoffman was also featured on the NBC series ‘Law and Order’ as Teddy Wayne, and played key roles in the hit Starz series ‘Magic City’ and Netflix’s ‘Bloodline’.

PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL: KWP Productions has some ‘supercalifragilisticexpialidocious’ entertainment in store for audiences of all ages when their production of Mary Poppins opens at the William T. Dwyer High School Theatre in Palm Beach Gardens on January 8^th. The show will run through January 17^th.

Based on the books by P.L. Travers and the beloved Walt Disney film, Mary Poppins is an enchanting mixture of irresistible story, unforgettable songs, breathtaking dance numbers and astonishing stage craft.

KWP Productions’ Kimberly Rommel-Enright will direct the production, which will feature Victoria Devereaux as Mary, and Sean Gogan as Bert.

“Perhaps one of the most iconic and memorable movies of my childhood was Mary Poppins,” says Rommel-Enright. “I have always loved all things Disney, so as adult I am thrilled to be able to produce and direct Disney shows such as Beauty and the Beast, Tarzan and now Mary Poppins. It allows me an opportunity to relive my childhood and to share that with an audience.

The bar is set pretty high when you choose to bring stories, characters, and songs that audiences know and love to life – and this updated version definitely retains the magic – and the music – of the original.

“I am blessed with a very talented cast with whom I have entrusted these well known characters,” she continues. “And this show is also an opportunity for many of our younger actors to be in a mainstage production and to work alongside professional actors learning and growing in their craft. Some of my favorite moments during rehearsal are when I can sit back and listen to songs being rehearsed or watch a dance being taught and practiced. I am often found grinning ear to ear and tapping my feet. The music is infectious as is the energy and enthusiasm of the cast. That is one of the things that makes this company so special – the love and joy we have for each other and for the work, and that we get to share that with an audience.”

“The music is vibrant and uplifting,” Lindsay White, the show’s choreographer says. “It has inspiring lively dance numbers including “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” and our big tap number, “Step in Time”. Choreographing Mary Poppins has reminded me to open my eyes to the magical things that happen all around me every day.”

“It is an absolutely amazing experience transforming into the iconic role of Mary Poppins,” says Victoria Devereaux. “I have been performing with KWP through many shows; I’ve played Ariel in The Little Mermaid and most recently Morticia in The Addams Family, but this is one of my favorite roles. I am delighted to be a part of this lovely and amazingly talented cast and I’m ecstatic to share this show with everyone.”

Sean Gogan, who plays Bert agrees. “It is very challenging to take on such a well known role as Bert in the musical Mary Poppins,” he explains. “But I am very excited about the opportunity to make the character my own in our KWP Production version of this classic tale, while staying true to the story everyone knows and loves. I am grateful for the opportunity to learn new and challenging things through my work with KWP from learning silks in Tarzan to tap dancing for Mary Poppins. This show in particular is full of energy, fun, and lessons like “anything can happen if you let it!” I can’t wait to share our practically perfect nanny with the South Florida Community!”

BOCA RATON, FL: A talented son’s passion for music versus his deep commitment to his father and his heritage is the heart and soul of the classic story of The Jazz Singer. A musical version of The Jazz Singer, based upon the 1925 play by Samson Raphaelson will run from January 8^th through January 24^th at the Willow Theatre in Sugar Sand Park.

Raphaelson’s play was based upon his own short story ‘The Day of Atonement’, written after he attended the musical Robinson Crusoe, Jr. in Chicago in 1917 starring a 37 year-old singer named Al Jolson. To Raphaelson, Jolson’s performance, particularly “his velocity, the amazing fluidity with which he shifted from tremendous absorption in his audience to a tremendous absorption in his song,” felt shockingly familiar. “When he finished I turned to the girl beside me, dazed with memories of my childhood on the East Side (of New York), and thought, ‘My God, this isn’t a jazz singer. This is a cantor!’”

This adaptation of Raphaelson’s play is a dynamic musical that explores the internal coming of age struggle of a talented son’s passion for music interfering with his cantor father’s plans for him to follow in his footsteps. The musical features songs by various iconic artists and composers including Irving Berlin and George Gershwin. Numbers include “You Made Me Love You”, “Baby Face”, “Mammy”, “I’m Sittin’ on Top of the World”, “I’m Just Wild About Harry”, and “April Showers”.

Kevin Black will direct the production, which will feature Larry Buzzeo as The Jazz Singer. Also cast are Katie Angell Thomas, Larry Kent Bramble, Elissa D. Solomon, Floyd Nash, and Bob Levitt.

“When I reread the play, the first thing I did was remove the image of Al Jolson from my mind,” Black explains. “The Jazz Singer has been recreated numerous times, and it’s a story that’s been loved by many people for many years. Yet it still resonates today. It addresses father-son relationships, inter-religious issues, and the never-ending internal struggle between passion and practicality. This version of The Jazz Singer is based on the original play that was eventually made into the first successful ‘talkie’ starring Al Jolson. But even though our production is very nostalgic, in no way is it a tribute to Jolson.”

A powerful story of one woman’s journey from a brutal existence to her own liberation, Sunset Baby is an energetic, daring look at the point where the personal and political collide.

Primal Forces Productions, the new edgy and innovative production company, will present the southeastern premiere of Dominique Morisseau’s Sunset Baby. The production will run from November 29^th through December 21^st at the Andrew’s Living Arts Studio in Fort Lauderdale.

Sunset Baby “…explores the gaps between generations, movements, and the effect that absent fathers have on their young daughters,” says playwright Morisseau. “That dynamic is so rarely examined on the stage: we usually talk about the effect it has on young black boys, but what about our girls?”

“In continuing our mission to present new works about the counterculture of the 1960s and 1970s, we have found this powder keg of a play that premiered off-Broadway last December,” says Primal Forces producer Keith Garsson. “In Sunset Baby, a former black activist returns to Brooklyn to search for his daughter…but learns a hard lesson about the ‘Sins of the Father’. We have three of the most talented actors in South Florida playing ‘urban outlaws’ whose explosive confrontations lead to some intriguing secrets revealed while also offering a very entertaining ride through America’s haunted past.

Garsson has assembled an award winning cast to interpret these complicated and compelling characters. John Archie, Makeba Pace, and Ethan Henry will take on the roles of Kenyatta Shakur, his daughter Nina, and her partner Damon.

“I was told (the play) is derived from one of 2Pac’s poems which I thought was so stimulating,” says Pace. “The message of this play is survival by any means necessary. A woman who was born to revolutionize ends up on a struggling path… trying to survive on the streets while selling drugs and robbing people. Yet somewhere in spite of all that, she still has a dream.” Pace was recently seen in The M Ensemble production of Knock me a Kiss and in the Fort Myers Repertory Company’s production of Clybourne Park.

Silver Palm winner and two-time Carbonell nominee Ethan Henry was recently named Best Supporting Actor by the Miami New Times for his performance in the Adrienne Arsht Center/University of Miami Theatre Department’s production of Metamorphoses.

John Archie is a member of Actors’ Equity and SAG-AFTRA, whose credits include film, TV, commercials, voice-overs, and print ads. His theatre credits include Driving Miss Daisy, The Whipping Man, Permanent Collection, Topdog/Underdog, Lobby Hero, Buffalo Soldier, The Meeting, and A Lesson Before Dying. John is the recipient of Carbonell, Curtain Up, and Silver Palm Awards.
Writer and actress Dominique Morisseau is an alumnus of the Public Theater Emerging Writer’s Group, the Women’s Project Playwrights Lab, and Lark Playwrights’ Workshop. Among her playwriting credits are: Detroit ’67, for which she was awarded the 2014 Edward M. Kennedy Prize for Drama Inspired By American History. She is a Jane Chambers Playwriting Award honoree, a two-time NAACP Image Award recipient, a runner-up for the Princess Grace Award, a recipient of the Elizabeth George commission from South Coast Rep, a commendation honoree for the Primus Prize by the American Theatre Critics Association, winner of the Barrie and Bernice Stavis Playwriting Award, the Weissberger Award for Playwriting, the U of M – Detroit Center Emerging Leader Award, and a Lark/PoNY (Playwrights of New York) Fellow.

Pigs Do Fly Productions will hold two readings of humorous short plays at Coral Gables’ Books & Books on January 25th and February 1st.

The award-winning company commissioned top South Florida playwrights Michael McKeever and Michael Leeds to write for them, and their plays are among those scheduled to be read.

And several months ago Pigs Do Fly Productions also put out a call to playwrights from across the United States for submissions of 10-minute contemporary comedies written to highlight “vibrant, healthy people over 50 who are doing interesting things with their lives”. Over 300 plays were submitted and a committee of 6 took on the task of reading and rating each one. The plays that will be read were rated the highest of the lot, and audiences will be asked for their input and their opinions at the end of each reading. The top five selections, along with the plays by McKeever and Leeds will form Pigs Do Fly’s next production, scheduled to take place in May at Andrews Living Arts.

The Last Five Years is a contemporary song-cycle musical that ingeniously chronicles the five year life of a marriage, from meeting to break-up… or from break-up to meeting, depending on how you look at it. I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change (February 6 to March 7, 2015, Theatre 2) In this clever two act musical, songwriters Joe DiPietro (book and lyrics) and Jimmy Roberts (music) offer a series of vignettes connected by the central theme of love and relationships. The play’s tagline is “Everything you have ever secretly thought about dating, romance, marriage, lovers, husbands, wives, and in-laws, but were afraid to admit.” I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change is the second longest running off-Broadway musical in history.

John Peterson will return to the Stage Door Theatre in George M. Cohen Tonight! (March 20 to April 26, 2015, Theatre 2) an upbeat one-man play about the beloved song and dance man George M. Cohan – capturing in 95 fast-moving minutes the essence of the man, his music, and the fabulous era of show business he came up in. A dazzling showcase for a song-and-dance man with flair. Peterson, who has received rave reviews everywhere he has performed this show, channels a swift, colorful portrayal of this most fiercely American musical figure. Peterson, played the Emcee in a recent Broadway revival of Cabaret, starred in Stage Door’s production of Song Man Dance Man two years ago.

Bell, Book, and Candle (May 15 to June 21, 2015, Theatre 2) In this fun and sexy romantic comedy, we meet Gillian Holroyd, a beautiful and lively free spirit – who also happens to be a witch. Frustrated by a lack of romance in her life and smitten by her handsome neighbor, she “helps things along” by casting a spell. But will she give into the one thing that will take away her magical powers forever? Only it’s not one thin mattress we’re talking about here, it’s thirteen mattresses, four feather comforters, and eight queen-size pillows! And not only that, but Jasmine wears ear muffs, a night mask, and is very, very tired! Does Jasmine pass the extremely unfair princess test? A comic jester, a rather confused king and a pompous announcer add to the merriment.

Sol Children Theatre and Evening Star Productions
to present two entirely different productions in February and March

Sol Children Theatre, Evening Star Productions, and the companies’ artistic director Rosalie Grant are not resting on any laurels. Grant, winner this year of the South Florida Theatre League’s newly established Remy Award as the Outstanding Contributor to Children’s Theatre, has two productions in the planned for February and March, and another ten in the works through December 2014.

Sol Children Theatre will present J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan or The Boy Who Would Not Grow Up from January 17^th through February 2^nd. This adaptation of the beloved children’s classic, by John Caird and Trevor Nunn, as directed by Rosalie Grant is full of laughter, action, and adventure. The tale of Wendy, Michael, and John Darling as they travel through Neverland with Peter Pan; bunking in alongside the Lost Boys; battling Captain Hook and his pirate crew; and encountering the rest of Barrie’s beloved characters (including Princess Tiger Lily, and of course Tinkerbell), has thrilled and delighted generations of theatre-goers. Sol’s young actors, under Grant’s direction, are well equipped to bring this tale to life, “And,” says Grant, “Along the way the audience will recognize the boy who never grew up as the child in all of us who is youth, joy, and freedom.”

Evening Star Productions, the newly created off-shoot of Sol Children Theatre, will present Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde from February 28^th through March 16^th. Evening Star offers serious young adult actors the opportunity to push the boundaries of their knowledge and talent in a safe and highly professional environment, and to work with professionals to provide practical experience, education, and support for those desiring a career in theatre.

Adapted for the stage by Jeffrey Hatcher from the Robert Louis Stevenson classic, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is “a smart, tense, and suspenseful new take on Stevenson’s look at ‘the evil that lurks in the hearts of men… Hatcher has fashioned a play that seems truer to Stevenson but hipper, sexier and more intense…” (The San Francisco Chronicle)
