East New York, Brooklyn: Nina’s estranged father, a former black revolutionary, reappears after many years to obtain a piece of her deceased mother’s legacy. A powerful story of one woman’s journey from a brutal existence to her own liberation, Sunset Baby is an energetic, daring look at the point where the personal and political collide.

Primal Forces Productions, the new edgy and innovative production company, will present the southeastern premiere of Dominique Morisseau’s Sunset Baby. The production will run from November 29^th through December 21^st at the Andrew’s Living Arts Studio in Fort Lauderdale.

Sunset Baby “…explores the gaps between generations, movements, and the effect that absent fathers have on their young daughters,” says playwright Morisseau. “That dynamic is so rarely examined on the stage: we usually talk about the effect it has on young black boys, but what about our girls?”

“In continuing our mission to present new works about the counterculture of the 1960s and 1970s, we have found this powder keg of a play that premiered off-Broadway last December,” says Primal Forces producer Keith Garsson. “In Sunset Baby, a former black activist returns to Brooklyn to search for his daughter…but learns a hard lesson about the ‘Sins of the Father’. We have three of the most talented actors in South Florida playing ‘urban outlaws’ whose explosive confrontations lead to some intriguing secrets revealed while also offering a very entertaining ride through America’s haunted past.

Garsson has assembled an award winning cast to interpret these complicated and compelling characters. John Archie, Makeba Pace, and Ethan Henry will take on the roles of Kenyatta Shakur, his daughter Nina, and her partner Damon.

“I was told (the play) is derived from one of 2Pac’s poems which I thought was so stimulating,” says Pace. “The message of this play is survival by any means necessary. A woman who was born to revolutionize ends up on a struggling path… trying to survive on the streets while selling drugs and robbing people. Yet somewhere in spite of all that, she still has a dream.” Pace was recently seen in The M Ensemble production of Knock me a Kiss and in the Fort Myers Repertory Company’s production of Clybourne Park.

Silver Palm winner and two-time Carbonell nominee Ethan Henry was recently named Best Supporting Actor by the Miami New Times for his performance in the Adrienne Arsht Center/University of Miami Theatre Department’s production of Metamorphoses.

John Archie is a member of Actors’ Equity and SAG-AFTRA, whose credits include film, TV, commercials, voice-overs, and print ads. His theatre credits include Driving Miss Daisy, The Whipping Man, Permanent Collection, Topdog/Underdog, Lobby Hero, Buffalo Soldier, The Meeting, and A Lesson Before Dying. John is the recipient of Carbonell, Curtain Up, and Silver Palm Awards.
Writer and actress Dominique Morisseau is an alumnus of the Public Theater Emerging Writer’s Group, the Women’s Project Playwrights Lab, and Lark Playwrights’ Workshop. Among her playwriting credits are: Detroit ’67, for which she was awarded the 2014 Edward M. Kennedy Prize for Drama Inspired By American History. She is a Jane Chambers Playwriting Award honoree, a two-time NAACP Image Award recipient, a runner-up for the Princess Grace Award, a recipient of the Elizabeth George commission from South Coast Rep, a commendation honoree for the Primus Prize by the American Theatre Critics Association, winner of the Barrie and Bernice Stavis Playwriting Award, the Weissberger Award for Playwriting, the U of M – Detroit Center Emerging Leader Award, and a Lark/PoNY (Playwrights of New York) Fellow.

The South Florida Theatre League’s Remy awards, named in honor of Remberto Cabrera, the former Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs’ Senior Cultural Administrator and Chief of Cultural Development, are given annually for Outstanding Service, and for Pioneering in South Florida regional theatre.

This year the League has announced that the number of Remy Awards to be presented will increase from six to eight. (Last year, in honor of the League’s 20^th anniversary, the number of awards given was increased from two to six.)The two added categories will once again honor those members of the South Florida theatrical community who are not usually recognized by more traditional artistic awards. The Remy Awards will be handed out at the League’s annual holiday celebration on December 1^st at Stache in Ft. Lauderdale.

“We are honored to be able to present these awards to people who are such important members or our community,” says League president Christopher Jahn. “These are individuals whose contributions are absolutely key to the success of our theatres and productions, yet they often go unrecognized. This is our opportunity to say ‘thank you’.”

Along with the Service and Pioneer Awards, Remys will be presented for Outstanding Theatre Company Board Member, Outstanding Contributor to Community Theatre, Outstanding Contributor to Children’s Theatre, and Outstanding Behind the Scenes Theatre Professional. The two newest awards to be presented will be the Civic Arts Leadership Award, and the Jay Harris Arts Leadership Award.

Theatres and theatre producers were asked to nominate individuals they felt were deserving of recognition, and a Theatre League committee was tasked with choosing the winners.

This year’s Remy Award recipients are:

The Pioneer Award – Paul Tei – Mad Cat Theatre Company

The Pioneer Award is bestowed upon individuals who have, over the years, taken the lead and contributed substantially to the health, growth and development of the South Florida theatre community.

Paul Tei is a playwright, actor, director, designer, and the founder of Mad Cat Theatre Company. As he has stated, “To be safe and create art is a lie. There should be no separation from the art and the artist as well as the action on stage and the spectator. Theatre is a dialogue of deconstruction and within its limitlessness lie the key to a wide spectrum of illuminations.” Under his leadership, Mad Cat has earned a reputation for exceptional and unique theatre, and has received countless awards (in every year of the company’s existence) and innumerable accolades. He has directed almost every one of Mad Cat’s productions; he wrote or co-wrote many plays for the company; he added design elements to all; and even acted in a few. He has also directed in New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Nevada, New Hampshire, Vermont, Manchester, U.K. and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland where he has always spread the word about Mad Cat Theatre Company and South Florida theatre scene. He has guest directed at many other South Florida theatre companies, including Mosaic Theatre, The Naked Stage, GableStage, and City Theatre. His theatre acting credits in South Florida (with the most recent being in MTC’s Hedda Gabbler) are numerous; he has received 5 acting Carbonell awards. As a member of SAG/AFTRA Paul has appeared in a number of television shows including: American Horror Story, Franklin & Bash, CSI Miami, Disney’s Zeke & Luther. His most notable role was as Barry the money launderer on Burn Notice.

The Service Award – Christine Dolen – Miami Herald

The Service Award is given to either individuals or organizations in recognition of their invaluable and outstanding contributions made through time, talent, service, and expertise by taking the initiative and actively participating and contributing to the growth and development of the South Florida Theatre League.

Christine Dolen’s contribution to the South Florida Theatre community has been ongoing and constant since she became Miami Herald’s theatre critic in 1979. She has earned the respect of the entire theatrical community, not to mention her peers – 1997, she was a member of the Pulitzer Prize drama jury; in 1999 she was a senior fellow in the National Arts Journalism Program at Columbia University. Chrstine is a member of the American Theatre Critics Association, and she was recently named as one of the top 12 influential theatre critics in the nation. Her reviews, articles, and blog posts are highly anticipated; a pre-show article, a selection as a ‘Pick of the Week’, or even a mention in one of her columns can do wonders for a production. Christine’s reviews are thoughtful and thought-provoking, and have consistently inspired theatres, companies, and performers to strive to meet the standards she expects from them. Her genuine passion and love for theatre is evident in all she does; her dedication to the South Florida Theatrical community is deep – and deeply appreciated.

The Civic Arts Leadership Award – Lois Frankel

The Civic Arts Leadership Award is a new award given to individuals in public service who have significantly supported the arts.

Lois Frankel has been a lifelong patron of the arts. As mayor of West Palm Beach, she recruited the Palm Beach International Photographic Museum, and brought the Ann & Don Brown Theatre, where Dramaworks now performs, to the city. She was a key participant in the revitalization of the downtown district – fueled by cultural events and the addition of performance and exhibition space at the Waterfront Pavilion.
Lois Frankel is a strong supporter of the NEA, and as mayor of West Palm Beach, she invested in the arts and sought out opportunities to bring the arts to the city. The 70 new businesses she recruited to downtown added a new vitality to the city, and that vitality is due at least in part to the positive impact of the arts in the area. She is a firm believer in arts education, and has long been a strong supporter of the Bak Middle School of the Arts in Palm Beach County.

The Jay Harris Arts Leadership Award – Kathy and Joe Savarese – Maltz Jupiter Theatre

Named in memory of one of South Florida’s most dedicated arts patrons, the Jay Harris Arts Leadership Award honors those who have made a substantial contribution to the theatrical community in the ways that Jay Harris did – through leadership, on-going volunteerism, and financial support.

Kathy and Joe Savarese have played an integral role in the success of the Maltz Jupiter Theatre. Not only have they generously supported the theatre since 2006, but they have also touched the hearts of many, and contributed to the awareness of the magic and charm the theatre brings to the local community. Their commitment has helped shape artistic excellence in our community for generations to come.
The Savarese’s love of sharing the arts has inspired them to sponsor a major production each year for the past five years. They consistently support all major events, not only financially, but enthusiastically. Their contributions have created opportunities for the entire region to not only experience the arts live, up close and in person, but to inspire, educate, and entertain. Thanks to their hands-on commitment and financial support the Maltz Jupiter Theatre has achieved recognition for artistic excellence. The Savares’s enthusiasm, passion, and outstanding presence at every event, every show, and every theatre milestone is truly what makes them deserving of this award.

Outstanding Board Member – Steven M. Weinger, Esq. – GableStage

GableStage Board of Directors President Steve Weinger is nationally recognized for his successful litigation on behalf of individuals with developmental disabilities. Yet while maintaining his active practice, Mr. Weinger manages to donate significant time to a number of not for profit organizations, including cultural and educational institutions, advocacy groups for the disabled, and non-profit health care providers. His contributions to GableStage include being a driving force behind raising funds to co-produce Tarell Alvin McCreney’s production of Anthony and Cleopatra with The Royal Shakespeare Company in London and The Public Theatre in New York.
“Steve Weinger has been the best President of our Board of Directors in the 16 years that I’ve been at GableStage”, says Producing Artistic Director Joe Adler. “He’s an attorney with a full practice — and yet he always makes time for my issues and concerns. His advice and counsel are invaluable — and I know I can always count on him.”

Outstanding Contributor to Children’s Theatre – John & Maria Rodaz – Area Stage Company

Although Area Stage had been a well-known theater production company staging professional productions for many years, in 2009 Maria and John Rodaz decided to create an acting conservatory for children and young adults that would carry all the rigors of a professional company. Area Stage’s conservatory program regularly produces student productions of the highest quality. Being part of these productions allows students to learn a high level of professionalism which takes them far when they graduate and leave the program, or branch out to perform outside of AreaStage even while still training there. Area Stage has also instituted a program of scholarships for young actors that do not have the financial means to pay conservatory rates.

Outstanding Contributor to Community Theatre – Alvin Entin – Pembroke Pines Theatre of the Performing Arts (PPTOPA)

Alvin E. Entin’s service to community theatre in general, and to Pembroke Pines Theatre of the Performing Arts in particular, has been continuous, persistent, and exemplary. As Chairman of the Board of PPTOPA for 17 years, Alvin has been one of the guiding lights of the company. He forged the agreement with the City of Pembroke Pines which enabled PPTOPA to maintain a healthy financial outlook, and remains the on the Liaison Committee to the City to this day. Alvin chaired the PPTOPA play selection committee from the beginning; he has been the company’s principal fundraiser, marketer, and legal counsel. He is also the face of PPTOPA, maintaining the company’s ticket booth at all productions. Alvin has served as an actor, assistant director and/or director, as well as artistic consultant on numerous PPTOPA productions. His high standards are reflected in the company’s productions, which are judged by critics and professionals in the area to be far beyond the normal perception of community theatre.

Outstanding Behind the Scenes Contributor – Gene Seyffer – Actors Playhouse

Gene Seyffer has been a behind the scenes man at Actors’ Playhouse nearly 20 years. Though he has designed sets here and there when called upon, his primary focus has been as Technical Director (which includes overseeing the scene shop) – making sure production design elements are linked together and built just right. He and his team of behind the scenes builders and technical personal at the theatre and in the shop constantly work under extreme pressure and deadlines. Some of Gene’s rewarding technical challenges have included August, Osage County, Miss Saigon, 1776, and Les Miserables. The job of a technical director can be a thankless one, and mostly unknown and unappreciated by the general public, but all who work in theatre know this job is critical to making a production work. Gene holds a MFA in Theatrical Design and Production from Northwestern University.

The South Florida Theatre League’s Annual Holiday Party promises to be an exciting event, as the Silver Palm Awards will also be presented that evening. The party will take place at STACHE at 109 South West Second Avenue in Fort Lauderdale, on Monday, December 1st at 7:30 pm. Admission is $25 for non-Theatre League members; there is no charge for League members in good standing.

When Eric Spiegelman and his partner Tim Williams asked film and television producer Sam Hoffman if he had any ideas for an internet website, he pitched the concept of Old Jews Telling Jokes. Millions of views, shares, and guffaws later, Hoffman – in collaboration with Peter Gethers and Daniel Okrent, brought his Old Jews to Off-Broadway for an extremely successful run at the Westside Theatre.

Mazel Musicals, Inc. award winning producer Lawrence Toppall in association with Derrell Bunn and the Broward Stage Door Theatre will launch the Florida tour of Old Jews Telling Jokes at the Broward Stage Door Theater beginning Saturday, November 1^st.

The show, which has been called a “pickle-barrel full of giggles”, showcases five actors in a revue-type production that pays tribute to and reinvents classic jokes of the past and present. It celebrates the rich tradition of Jewish humor “and all the rabbis, complaining wives, fed-up husbands, patience-challenged physicians, gossiping ladies and competitive men” populating it. The humor can be suggestive (sometimes even raunchy) as the ‘Old Jews’ make fun of themselves as well as followers of every other religion.

“I attribute [Old Jews Telling Jokes’] success to a number of factors,” says Hoffman. “It’s funny. We launched …in [2009] the year when the recession was nearly at its worst and I think people really liked having something fun to download…. it celebrates older people with no irony, and I think that’s a fairly unusual commodity in popular entertainment.”

Toppall and Bunn have chosen Peter J. Loewy to direct the production, which will feature Ashley Brooks, Gail Byer, Adam Chisnall, Ben Prayz, and Michael Small.

Loewy is no stranger to the South Florida Theatre scene, having directed several Broward Stage Door Theatre productions including his own musical The Kid from Brooklyn. “The material, the premise, the humor, and this cast are a terrific combination,” he says. “This show is going to appeal to every audience, I guarantee it. Age, ethnicity, attitude – none of it matters – because laughter transcends it all.”

Old Jews Telling Jokes will open on November 1, 2014 at The Broward Stage Door Theatre in Coral Springs. The theatre is located at 8036 Sample Road, in Coral Springs.

Primal Forces Productions has chosen two entertaining and thought provoking pieces for its second season. The young company’s successful production of David Mamet’s The Anarchist in March of 2014 has encouraged producer Keith Garsson to continue its mission to “explore the impact of the tumultuous 1960s on today’s generation.” Both plays will be presented at Andrews Living Arts in Ft. Lauderdale.

Dominique Morisseau’s Sunset Baby, which premiered Off-Broadway in November 2013 will begin previews on November 29^th, open on December 5^th, and run through December 21^st. John Archie will star as a former revolutionary looking to connect with his daughter (Makeba Pace) in present-day Brooklyn. “He finds that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree,” explains Garsson.

Lanford Wilson’s Redwood Curtain stunned Broadway audiences in 1992 with its unique spin on a Vietnam veteran (Ethan Henry) and the mysterious young Asian woman (Amarie Lee) who tracks him down in the forests of Northern California exasperating her guardian (Jacqueline Laggy.) Redwood Curtain will begin previews on April 4^th, 2015, open on April 10^th, and runs through April 26^th.

“The turbulent 60s provides a wealth of nostalgia and entertainment value to audiences looking for drama with a lot of meat. However, even if you weren’t there, you will be fascinated and enthralled by how different a country we were less than 50 years ago,” says Garsson.

The Boca Raton Theatre Guild was looking for something unique as a follow-up to the company’s recent successful productions of Pippin and Chicago: “Something modern – with music that would appeal to all generations,” says producer Keith Garsson. “And when Everyday Rapture opened on Broadway in 2010 to outstanding reviews and sold-out performances it just stuck in my mind. It’s funny, timely and unlike anything you’ve seen before.” Everyday Rapture will have its South Florida premiere when it previews at the Willow Theatre in Sugar Sand Park on November 7^th and opens the following night. It will run through November 23^rd.

The show, which has been called a ‘stage memoir disguised as fiction’, tells the story of a young woman’s psycho-spiritual-sexual journey down the rocky path that separates her mostly Mennonite past from her mostly Manhattan future – from the cornfields of Kansas to the clover fields of New York (with a disturbing detour through YouTube!). Everyday Rapture entwines spirituality and show biz. It follows a young woman as she grows from a Mennonite to a Manhattanite, with many psychological and spiritual challenges on the way. Gay men, Judy Garland and two preachers named Fred all form major parts of the tapestry woven into the play. Everyday Rapture features songs by numerous singers and songwriters including Johnny Mercer, David Byrne, George Harrison, Roberta Flack, Judy Garland, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, and even Mr. Rogers.

“I’m delighted to be directing the Southeast premiere of this unique musical story,” says Genie Croft. “The lead character is an outsider from Topeka – raised as a Mennonite – who follows her dreams to New York, and creates a career as a Broadway actress. The emotional, humorous, and spiritual arc of the musical is an exciting contrast of two journeys of discovery that cleverly show how divided personalities can lead to some of the most fascinating people out there.”

Musical director Caryl Fantel, who has credits from Off-Broadway to regional theatres and concert halls throughout South Florida and around the United States is equally enthusiastic about the production:
“I’m excited to work on it because there’s truly something for everyone, running the gamut of musical styles from standards to musical theatre, funk, and rock. We have a top-notch ensemble of vocalists and a rocking band in place,” she continues, “And I can’t wait to share this unique and entertaining piece of theatre.”

Says lead actress Jodie Langel: “The heart of this show lies in the story of this incredible girl, her desire to be spiritually and morally correct – while dreaming of Broadway, and to do what she loves most – be center stage singing her heart out.”

Joining Langel on the Willow stage will be Ann Marie Olson, Leah Sessa, and Ben Solmor (who is also serving as the show’s choreographer.)

Pigs Do Fly Productions will hold two readings of humorous short plays at Coral Gables’ Books & Books on January 25th and February 1st.

The award-winning company commissioned top South Florida playwrights Michael McKeever and Michael Leeds to write for them, and their plays are among those scheduled to be read.

And several months ago Pigs Do Fly Productions also put out a call to playwrights from across the United States for submissions of 10-minute contemporary comedies written to highlight “vibrant, healthy people over 50 who are doing interesting things with their lives”. Over 300 plays were submitted and a committee of 6 took on the task of reading and rating each one. The plays that will be read were rated the highest of the lot, and audiences will be asked for their input and their opinions at the end of each reading. The top five selections, along with the plays by McKeever and Leeds will form Pigs Do Fly’s next production, scheduled to take place in May at Andrews Living Arts.

I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change (February 6 to March 7, 2015, Theatre 2) In this clever two act musical, songwriters Joe DiPietro (book and lyrics) and Jimmy Roberts (music) offer a series of vignettes connected by the central theme of love and relationships. The play’s tagline is “Everything you have ever secretly thought about dating, romance, marriage, lovers, husbands, wives, and in-laws, but were afraid to admit.” I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change is the second longest running off-Broadway musical in history.

John Peterson will return to the Stage Door Theatre in George M. Cohen Tonight! (March 20 to April 26, 2015, Theatre 2) an upbeat one-man play about the beloved song and dance man George M. Cohan – capturing in 95 fast-moving minutes the essence of the man, his music, and the fabulous era of show business he came up in. A dazzling showcase for a song-and-dance man with flair. Peterson, who has received rave reviews everywhere he has performed this show, channels a swift, colorful portrayal of this most fiercely American musical figure. Peterson, played the Emcee in a recent Broadway revival of Cabaret, starred in Stage Door’s production of Song Man Dance Man two years ago.

Bell, Book, and Candle (May 15 to June 21, 2015, Theatre 2) In this fun and sexy romantic comedy, we meet Gillian Holroyd, a beautiful and lively free spirit – who also happens to be a witch. Frustrated by a lack of romance in her life and smitten by her handsome neighbor, she “helps things along” by casting a spell. But will she give into the one thing that will take away her magical powers forever? The overbearing Queen has already determined whom her precious sonny boy, Prince Handsome, will marry. So when a muddy and very dirty Princess Jasmine catches the Prince’s eye unexpectedly, the Queen insists she pass the “pea under the mattress” test to prove she really is a princess. Only it’s not one thin mattress we’re talking about here, it’s thirteen mattresses, four feather comforters, and eight queen-size pillows! And not only that, but Jasmine wears ear muffs, a night mask, and is very, very tired! Does Jasmine pass the extremely unfair princess test? A comic jester, a rather confused king and a pompous announcer add to the merriment.

The Mystery of Edwin Drood

Let’s Do the Time Warp Again!

Halloween is just around the corner, and who better to celebrate with than the denizens of Dr. Frank N. Furter’s home-sweet-castle in Richard O’Brien’s beloved cult classic, The Rocky Horror Show. And Entr’Acte Theatrix is inviting audiences to come do the Time Warp again… when they present ‘Rocky’ at the Crest Theatre at the Delray Beach Center for the Arts from October 16^th through November 1^st.

The Rocky Horror Show is an outrageous assemblage of – and humorous tribute to – the most stereotypical science fiction and horror movies, Marvel comics, Frankie Avalon/Annette Funicello outings and rock ‘n’ roll of every vintage. The play (upon which the classic film The Rocky Horror Picture Show is based) has grown from an experimental production originally produced in a small London theatre in June 1973, to a cult phenomenon with fans world-wide. The musical tells the story of a newly engaged couple who, when caught in a storm, find refuge in the home of a decidedly unusual scientist who is madly working towards unveiling his latest and greatest creation.

Rocky is also the quintessential audience participation show, and Entr’Acte will have what have come to be known as ‘survival kits’ available for purchase for those who want them.

This is the second time Entr’Acte Theatrix will present The Rocky Horror Show at the Delray Beach Center for the Arts’ Crest Theatre. Their 2012 production was so successful that when an encore presentation was suggested, it was a ‘no brainer’!

Kevin Black

“When the discussion began to remount Rocky Horror with Entr’Acte Theatrix, I knew immediately I was onboard,” says director Kevin Black. “And thankfully (producer) Vicki Halmos asked me if I was interested…of course! Rocky is a show within its own class – not many out there like it,” he continues. “It’s one of those shows that, as a director, you can put your personal creative stamp on. To me, that’s the fun of it. So this time around we are producing Rocky Horror 2.0. Bigger. Bolder. Bawdier!”

Michaela Paige

Entr’Acte has scored several casting coups with this production. Michaela Paige, who was a top 12 finalist on the 2012 edition of NBC’s “The Voice” will play ‘The Usherette’. Paige’s bio is impressive. She has been performing since the age of 8, and since appearing on “The Voice” she has been featured in USA Today, Rolling Stone, Access Hollywood, and the iTunes Top 100 Chart. She is also the host of three radio shows on W4CY and W4WN Radio, currently ranked number one in South Florida and thirteenth in the world for internet radio.

Mike Westrich

Mike Westrich who played Sir Galahad in Entr’Acte’s 2013 production of Spamalot, will play Dr. Frank N. Furter. The Silver Palm winner and two-time Carbonell Award nominee is currently garnering rave reviews and standing ovations for his performance in Broward Stage Door Theatre’s What’s New Pussycat? The Soundtrack of an Era. He is a graduate of The American Musical and Dramatic Academy in Manhattan and has worked in numerous venues such as The Broward Center for the Performing Arts, The Duplex in NYC, and The Two River Theatre in NJ.

Gaby Tortoledo

Gaby Tortoledo (Janet) will make her Entr’Acte Theatrix debut in The Rocky Horror Show. She received extensive training and background in classical ballet, street jazz, and Latin dance in her native Venezuela, and continued her studies at City Academy London in the UK. Among her past credits are Jo (Little Women), Sally (You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown), and Fantine (Les Miserables).

Justin Schneyer (Brad) is a graduate of Florida Atlantic University with a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in Theatre Performance. He has worked with several theaters in South Florida, including Slowburn Theatre Company (Urinetown: The Musical, Into the Woods, Sideshow), Outre Theatre Company (Much Ado About Nothing), The Boca Raton Theatre Guild (Sweet Charity), and The Broward Center for the Performing Arts (Little House on the Ferry).

Seth Trucks

Seth Trucks (Narrator) studied experimental theatre at NYU and classical theatre at The British American Drama Academy and The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. He performed with Fractured Atlas and Synaesthetic Theatre in New York, and spent five years as a writer/performer with the NY based physical comedy troupe, The Six Characters. In Florida, Seth has performed with the Palm Beach Shakespeare Festival and Eveningstar Productions. This is his third show with Entr’Acte Theatrix – he was Trekkie Monster in Avenue Q and improv/comedy coach for Spamalot.

Other cast members include Dan Thagard (Rocky), Jenna Paige Gagliardo (Magenta), Greg Halmos (Riff Raff), Brielle Lysaght (Columbia), and Carlo-Rufino Sabusap (Dr. Scott).

Entr’acte Theatrix, is a not-for-profit, semi-professional, showcase company for young actors, providing performance opportunities for emerging theatre artists. An off-shoot of the Palm Beach Principal Players, a twelve-year-old acting company for theater students of high school and college age, Entr’acte, as the name suggests, is the “next step,” from classroom to career, and provides the young actor his or her first professional, all-important, resume-building credit.

The Rocky Horror Show will run for 15 performances only, from October 16 – November 1, at the Crest Theatre at the Delray Beach Center for the Arts. Playwright Joe DiPietro has become increasingly adept at illustrating the fascinating dynamics of love and family. From his first Off-Broadway success, I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change, through his Tony Award-winning hit Memphis, DiPietro has examined many aspects of the human connection. In the Broward Stage Door Theatre’s upcoming production of The Last Romance, DiPietro explores a relationship between a man and a woman who just happen to be over the age of 65, and the family ties that bind, and pull. The play is a gentle and tender comedy that mixes a lot of humor with a little bit of heartbreak… and opera!

Director Arthur Whitelaw and Stage Door’s Artistic Director Derelle Bunn have cast Larry Bramble, Phyllis Spear, Sally Bondi, and James Parks in the production, which will open on October 10^t^h, and run through November 23^rd.

“The Last Romance is a warm, funny and insightful play about love after 65,” says Whitelaw. “I hope our audiences will leave the theatre with a smile on their faces and a tear in their eyes. I know that after I read it, I did. Joe DiPietro is a talented young writer, who knows his characters and their territory.”

Larry Bramble agrees. “When I first read this play I knew I had to play the role of Ralph. It seemed like it was written for me. Stage Door has allowed that dream to come true. I just directed Over the River and Through the Woods for Stage Door, and I have become a big fan of Joe DiPietro’s plays. He has an innate sense of what touches our souls and what makes us human.”

Joe DiPietro wrote the book and lyrics to the musical comedy hit I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change, (composer: Jimmy Roberts), the longest running musical revue in off-Broadway history, with productions staged in over 150 cities around the world. He is also the author of the plays Over The River And Through The Woods, The Kiss At City Hall, The Virgin Weeps, and the comic thriller The Art Of Murder (winner of the 2000 Edgar Award). He wrote the book to the “new” Gershwin musical Nice Work If You Can Get It (world premiere: Goodspeed Opera House, 2001), a new adaptation of Rodgers & Hart’s Babes In Arms (world premiere: Goodspeed Opera House, 2002) and a new adaptation of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Allegro (world premiere: Signature Theatre, 2004). In addition to his book and lyrics for the recent off-Broadway musical The Thing About Men (composer: Jimmy Roberts), DiPietro’s other projects include book and lyrics for the rock & roll musical Memphis (composer: David Bryan, premiered regionally in late 2003), and the book for All Shook Up, an original musical comedy featuring the songs of Elvis Presley which opened on Broadway in 2005. Joe is the recipient of the William Inge Theater Festival New Voices In American Theater Award, and has won the O’Neill National Playwright’s Conference MacArthur Award for comic writing.

Arthur Whitelaw

Arthur Whitelaw has been producing, directing, writing and acting for the past 61 years. His productions have won every major industry award including the Tony, Oscar, Emmy, Olivier, Evening Standard, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, etc. He has discovered many future stars starting with his first production, Best Foot Forward which introduced Liza Minnelli and Christopher Walken to the New York stage. Others include: Marvin Hamlich, Stephen Schwartz, Gary Burgoff, Blyth Danner, Paul Michael Glaser, Christen Chenowyth to name only a few. His productions have played all over the world in and in many languages. Some of his many television credits include: You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown (NBC) Emmy Nom., Celebrating Gershwin (PBS/BBC) EMMY WIN and for HBO, Camelot, The Rainmaker, The Deadly Game, and Groucho. His film credits include: Butterflies Are Free, and Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn with Jodie Foster. A few Seasons ago Mr. Whitelaw acted in Full Circle (a play he wrote about his long career) and directed A Taffeta Wedding (a sequel to The Taffetas) both for the Stage Door Theatre in Coral Springs. He has also just finished his autobiography Working For Peanuts. Last year Mr. Whitelaw donated his vast theatre files to the Library of Congress.

The Last Romance will run from October 10^th – November 23^rd at The Broward Stage Door Theatre in Coral Springs. The theatre is located at 8036 Sample Road, in Coral Springs.

Evening Star Productions will follow up their sold out August production of William Shakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors with Frank Gilroy’s multi-award winning play The Subject Was Roses. The play will open on September 12^th, and run through September 28^th at Sol Theatre in Boca Raton.

A timeless American classic, Gilroy’s play explores one family’s struggle to reconcile the disappointments of the past with hopes for the future in post-war America. Set in the Bronx in 1946, The Subject Was Roses focuses on three days in the lives of the Cleary family: Timmy, who has just returned from World War II, and his parents, Nettie and John.

Jeffrey Bruce

“The travails of a seemingly, happy family, when the son returns from war, and the effect it has on the parents who love him, combined with how his re-appearance affects their relationship, was too good to resist when the opportunity arose to direct this play,” director Jeffrey Bruce says.

“When I was a teenager, I saw The Subject Was Roses at a Saturday matinee just after it had won both the Pulitzer Prize for drama as well as the Tony for Best Play,” he continues. “Jack Albertson, Irene Dailey and Martin Sheen comprised the cast, and I remember being devastated at the curtain call. I have never been a particular fan of “happy” theatre and enjoy the experience most while feeling deepest emotion, which, to put it mildly, was the state I remained in hours after leaving The Royale Theatre.”

Bruce has cast father and son actors Alan and Evan Gerstel as John and Timmy Cleary. Elli Murray will play Nettie Cleary.

Audience response to Pigs Do Fly Productions’ first outing, Fifty Plus – A Celebration of Life… As We Know It confirmed what the company’s producer and artistic director, Ellen Wacher already knew – that the short, humorous plays she and her production team chose to present last May in Ft. Lauderdale would resonate with theatre patrons of all ages. The show sold out at Empire Stage, and sold even more tickets than anticipated when it ran for eight ‘encore’ performances in Boca Raton in August. The company’s newest production Fifty Plus – A New Attitude! will run at Empire Stage from September 11^th through September 21^st.

“We received close to four hundred submissions when we sent out a call for plays last winter,” Wacher says, “and we quickly realized – even before our first run was over – that we’d found a great concept, that audiences were loving what we were doing, and that we still had a deep pool of excellent material to choose from. Empire Stage offered dates in September, and Wacher and her team revisited at least 75 of the previously submitted plays. Six plays were chosen and auditions were held in early August.

Todd Caster, Adela Del Rio, Kerry Sensenbach, Elissa Solomon, Troy Stanley, and Janet Weakely were cast.

The new collection, titled Fifty Plus – A New Attitude! reflects the company’s mission, to produce plays that highlight the actor over 50 as a viable, fully involved, full of life character perfectly.

“Anyone, any age, can do anything. If you do it well at 25, you can do it twice as well at 50. Not everything entertaining should be aimed at the young,” says Marj O’Neill-Butler, one of the show’s two directors. You can have fun with an older crowd too. Good stories resonate at any age.”

Co-director Beverly Blanchette agrees: “Fifty Plus – A New Attitude! reminds me of Molly Shannon’s SNL character, Sally O’Malley, whose catchphrase is: “I’m proud to say I’m 50 years old. And I like to kick! Stretch! And kick! I’m 50!” Shannon says the phrase means: “Watch out people, here I come. . . I can kick ass.” And that’s what Pigs Do Fly Productions does.”

Sharon Goldner’s (Mrs Greenblatt’s Place in the Universe) plays have been produced and workshopped in NYC; Canada; FL; WI; OH; PA; VA; TX; CA; & MN. She’s a member of Dramatists Guild.

Stacey Lane’s (Rainbow Sprinkles) plays have been performed at 400 theatres on 6 continents. She has 35 published works and has received numerous grants, awards and commissions. www.StaceyLaneInk.com

Christopher Lockheardt’s (Your Kiss is on My List) plays have been produced over 140 times nationally and internationally, but never before in Florida. His father, who lives in Merritt Island, was starting to take it personally.

Connie Schindewolf (Remote Control), an award-winning playwright, has had productions across the United States (including NYC and LA), Canada, and Australia. She’s a member of the Dramatists Guild of America and when she’s not writing, she’s saving sea turtles.

Mary Beth Smith (Buddhists in the Basement) won the 2014 Peter Honegger award for “Keep A-breast”, a dramedy about her bizarre experiences surviving cancer, living proof that laughter heals.

Donald Steele (MEMOIR) has had four plays published by Samuel French. He is a Fellow of the MacDowell Colony and member of the Dramatist Guild.
