FORT LAUDERDALE, FL: The Off Broadway hit Daddy Issues, written and directed by David Goldyn, is returning to South Florida after a short but successful stint at Boca Raton’s Willow Theatre last March. The production will run from October 18th through November 3rd at the Theatre at CSL (Center for Spiritual Living) in Oakland Park.

How far will a gay guy go to please his parents? Daddy Issues centers on Donald Moscowitz, (Elijah Pearson) an openly gay actor living in New York City in 1982.  His overbearing Jewish parents (Elli Murray and David Goldyn) know he’s gay but that doesn’t stop them from demanding a grandchild.  When Donald learns that Grandma Moscowitz (Vicki Klein) will double his inheritance if he produces a grandchild, he enlists the help of the ten-year old kid from downstairs (Michael Salvanto) to play his son from an experimental tryst he had in college. His two best friends Henrietta (Kayla Fainer) and Levi (Jesus Reyna), a drag star from the village, fight over who will play the birth mother, Mary Ellen McQuire. When Mom and Dad show up what could go wrong?

Daddy Issues was nominated for Best Off Broadway Play by Broadway World in 2017.  In New York it was hailed as “hilarious and heartfelt” (Michael Musto) and the Huffington Post proclaimed it “a frothy whipped dessert of a show.” Seth Kubersky at The Orlando Weekly called the Florida premiere of Daddy Issues in 2018, “the rare snappy play that would go over equally well in a gay nightclub as well as a Miami retirement home.” The Weekly went on to say that “if it were a sit-com on NBC’s Thursday’s lineup, it might run for six seasons.” Prophetically, the play has already received sit-com interest in Los Angeles.

Playwright David Goldyn, who will also be directing the production, has helmed the show five times previously, including the Off-Broadway version, but this is the first time he will appear on stage.  Goldyn ran Fort Lauderdale’s Rising Action Theatre for seven years. He left the company (to pursue a writing career) in the capable hands of Andy Rogow, who reinvented it as Island City Stage.  Since leaving Rising Action Theatre, David has written two full length plays – Daddy Issues and The Manufacturers Daughter and the upcoming film “Black Jack at the Moulin Rouge” (http://blackjackatthemoulinrouge.com/). David also served as an Associate Producer on Broadway’s Honeymoon in Vegas.

Daddy Issues will run from October 18th through November 3rd at the Theatre at CSL (Center for Spiritual Living) in Oakland Park. FORT LAUDERDALE, FL:   Rehearsals have begun for 2 Across, Pigs Do Fly Productions’ upcoming production of Jerry Mayer’s ‘comedy of crosswords and romance’. The show will run from March 7th through March 24th at Empire Stage in Fort Lauderdale.

2 Across finds two strangers, a man and a woman, on board a San Francisco BART train at 4:30 a.m. Alone in the car, the only thing they have in common is that they are both doing the New York Times crossword puzzle.  Soon the puzzles they unravel are more intriguing than any crossword puzzle could ever be.

“This is our first play that focuses on a relationship between two people,” says Pigs Do Fly Productions’ founder and Executive Producer Ellen Wacher. “It also totally meets with our company’s mission – to show people over the age of 50 living interesting and active and real lives. I was captivated by these characters’ development, and I believe our audience will be too.”

Deborah Kondelik, who starred in both of Pigs Do Fly’s recent successful productions of The Ladies Foursome, will direct 2 Across: “It has been said that opposites attract,” Kondelik said recently.  “Whether or not that rings true remains to be seen in Jerry Mayer’s hilarious yet poignant, romantic comedy.  One thing that is guaranteed though, is a delightful very early morning romp by two strangers on San Francisco’s BART train.  The tie that binds is that both of them are hard at work on the Saturday New York Times crossword puzzle.  Although they tackle the puzzle with very different approaches, they soon discover commonalities that cannot be ignored. The stumbling block is that both are married . . . to someone else.”

Barbara Sloan and David R. Gordon will star in 2 Across, and both are excited at the prospect of exploring their diametrically opposite characters: Sloan’s Janet is a responsible, honest, rule-abiding psychologist, and Gordon’s Josh is part-free spirit, part executive, part dreamer, and part Peter Pan.

Playwright Jerry Mayer has written scripts for All in the Family, M*A*S*H*, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, and the Bob Newhart Show (where he served as story editor).  His first play, Almost Perfect ran for a year and a half at the Santa Monica Playhouse.  Other plays include the musical You Haven’t Changed a Bit, and Other Lies and Dietrich and Chevalier, The Musical.

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL:   Pigs Do Fly Productions’ production of The Ladies Foursome played to consistently full houses when it ran at Empire Stage last March.  The show was such a success that the company’s founder and Executive Producer, Ellen Wacher decided to bring ‘the ladies’ back onto the golf course and let them swing their way through another round!   The show will run from October 4th through October 21st – once again at Empire Stage in Fort Lauderdale.

“Why not?” Wacher said recently.  “I kept hearing from people saying their friends heard great things about the show and were sorry they’d missed it. Or that they hadn’t laughed so much in the theatre for ages and wanted to see it again.  The play – and the dialogue – is thoughtful, clever, realistic, and very, very funny, and it really resonated with our audiences – both men and women.   So this is truly a case of ‘back by popular demand’!”  

The show’s premise is simple: It’s the day after the funeral, and three women gather for a round of golf in honor of their recently departed play partner.  A mysterious fourth joins them, and so begins a raucous and rowdy 18 holes filled with secrets, surprises, confessions… and sex

The production will once again be directed by Genie Croft and all four original cast members – Janice Hamilton, Deborah Kondelik, Jacquie Laggy, and Elissa Solomon are back on board for this round.

“I am delighted we have the opportunity to be on the links once more, with this production,” Croft says. “Having done the show with this talented cast before, this time around they are able to expand in a more significant, and deeper way to their friendships, and pursuits of their own dreams, while achieving a higher level of humor.

“These four women have played golf together every week for 14 years, and they believe this is the perfect way to honor their friend,” Croft explained when she spoke about the play last March. “Each one of the foursome has her secrets – some have been taken to the grave, and others are revealed in moments of anger, jealously, drunkenness, and guilt.  As they play the links, confessions about men, sex, love, children, and careers come to the fore as they challenge each other’s views.  The Ladies Foursome is a tribute to the pitfalls and pleasures of friendships and their lasting significance in our lives.”

Norm Foster is considered to be Canada’s most produced playwright. He discovered his talents as a playwright in Fredericton, New Brunswick, while he was working as host of a popular morning radio show. He accompanied a friend to an audition, and landed his first acting job, as Elwood P. Dowd in Harvey, without ever having even seeing a play. Intrigued with the theatre, he set his pen to paper and wrote his first play titled Sinners.

An extremely prolific writer, Foster has had more than fifty plays produced on professional stages around the world. Other well-known plays include The Love List, The Long Weekend; Bedtime Stories; Kiss the Moon, Kiss the Sun; Storm Warning; Skin Flick; Outlaw; Hilda’s Yard; On A First Name Basis; Old Love; Mending Fences and Here on the Flight Path. FORT LAUDERDALE, FL:   It’s the day after the funeral, and three women gather for a round of golf in honor of their recently departed play partner.  A mysterious fourth joins them, and so begins a raucous and rowdy 18 holes filled with secrets, surprises, confessions… and sex.  Pigs Do Fly Productions will present award-winning Canadian playwright Norm Foster’s The Ladies Foursome from March 22nd – April 8th at Empire Stage in Fort Lauderdale.  There will be a preview performance at 8 pm on March 21st.

The production will be directed by Genie Croft: “Welcome to the Southeastern premiere of The Ladies Foursome, a witty insightful comedy following four women as they navigate the ups and downs of life on the links,” she enthuses.  The fun starts at the first tee when golfer Tate starts stretching to “loosen up” and Margot does the same by cracking open a beer!

Lauderdale this season in his highly praised autobiographical comedy, My Son the Waiter: A Jewish Tragedy.  The show will run from February 1 – March 25 at the Norma & William Horvitz Auditorium at the NSU Art Museum in Fort Lauderdale.

My Son the Waiter:  A Jewish Tragedy is the story of Zimmerman’s struggle to fulfill his dream and ‘make it’ as a comedic actor in New York.  One-part standup, one-part theatrical, and all parts uproarious My Son the Waiter:  A Jewish Tragedy has garnered rave reviews wherever it has played, including sold out runs Off Broadway in New York, Philadelphia, Boston, Atlanta,  Toronto, San Diego, Thousand Oaks, CA, Huntington Beach, CA., Palm Beach, FL., the Northshore PAC in Skokie, Illinois, The Gordon Center For Performing Arts in Maryland, the George Street Playhouse in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and dozens of other cities throughout the USA.

Every mother dreams her children will grow up to be happy, healthy, and successful.  Every Jewish mother secretly – and often not so secretly –  adds specifics to her wish:  A doctor, a lawyer, a dentist, or these days, a Silicon Valley tycoon would make her very happy.  Brad Zimmerman’s mother has finally adapted to her ‘actor-waiter’ son’s career choice and financial situation: “If all goes well, I think Brad is going to buy a bookcase,” she boasts to her friends.

Brad Zimmerman has paid his dues.  He spent 29 years “temporarily” waiting tables in New York, all the while chasing a career in acting and comedy.  He tells of his pursuit, along with stories about his childhood, family, and misbegotten love life with warmth, wit, self-deprecating humor, and wicked charm, and combines his years of training as an actor with his innate comedic talent.

Zimmerman also examines the trials and tribulations of waiting on tables – particularly for someone not exactly invested in that career, and with little tolerance for persnickety diners:

“I don’t want 60 questions, get to the point!” he said he would tell restaurant patrons when he sat down for a recent interview for The New York Times. He joked that if diners prefaced their orders by saying they were in a hurry he would say “So go!” He says he did enjoy some of the bantering he did with diners, and often tried out material on them, however there were also ‘the bossy customers who would snap their fingers to get his attention… and the health-food obsessives who elaborately customized their orders and button-holed him over ingredients.’  As he says in My Son the Waiter: A Jewish Tragedy, he was convinced his epitaph would read “I’ll be right with you.”

His perseverance and hard work eventually did pay off, and Zimmerman went on to act – he had a small part in “The Sopranos” playing Johnny Sack’s lawyer – and to become the opening act for a number of well-known entertainers, including George Carlin, Brad Garrett, Dennis Miller, Julio Iglesias, and Joan Rivers who said “I’ve had three great opening acts in my lifetime:  Billy Crystal, Garry Shandling, and Brad Zimmerman.”

Zimmerman worked on the script for My Son the Waiter:  A Jewish Tragedy for 9 years and performed it in small venues all over the country, including a stint at Florida’s Stage Door Theatre, where it came to the attention of producers Dana Matthow and Philip Roy (Respect: A Musical Journey of Women, Old Jews Telling Jokes, My Mother’s Italian, My Father’s Jewish & I’m in Therapy). MARGATE, FL:  Stage Door Theatre will present Neil Simon’s classic comedy The Sunshine Boys in the popular venue’s intimate Theatre 2, from August 18th through September 24th.

The Sunshine Boys – Al Lewis and Willie Clark – were Vaudeville stars and partners for over forty years, but haven’t spoken to one another for over eleven. When Willie’s nephew Ben approaches his uncle about reuniting with his ex-partner to perform one of their classic skits on a CBS television comedy, their eventual reunion is fraught with acrimony, arguments, memories, and laughter.

“The Sunshine Boys is the fourth Neil Simon play I’ve directed and I think it’s his best,” says the show’s director, Michael Leeds. “It’s incredibly funny, I mean rolling in the aisles funny, and also quite touching.  It’s based on a real actor named Willie Howard who was a very eccentric vaudeville comedian.  Simon got the idea of taking Willie and giving him a partner whom he hasn’t spoken to in twelve years and now they’re going to be on an Ed Sullivan special – and they can’t stand each other.

“I was lucky enough to get a great cast led by Michael Small and Peter Librach, two pros who have these characters in their bones,” Leeds continues. “There’s a hysterical scene where they’re rehearsing the routine, arguing about everything from the line delivery to the furniture placement and it has one of the funniest moments I’ve seen on stage.  If there was a definition of “crowd pleaser” in the dictionary, it would say: ‘Neil Simon’s The Sunshine Boys’.”
Along with Small and Librach, Leeds has cast Ben Sandomir as Willie’s nephew Ben Silverman.  Also in the cast are George Schiavone, Vicki Klein, Jeanin Gangloff, and Elijah Pearson-Martinez.

The show’s production team includes Set Designer Michael McClain, Lighting Designer Dean Landhuis, and Costume Designer Jerry Sturdivant.  Stage manager is Jose-Luis Ramos, and Paul O’Donnell is the productions Operations Manager.

Old Jews Telling Jokes showcases five actors in a comedy that pays tribute to and reinvents classic jokes of the past and present.   It celebrates the rich tradition of Jewish humor “and all the rabbis, complaining wives, fed-up husbands, patience-challenged physicians, gossiping ladies and competitive men” populating it. The humor can be suggestive (sometimes even raunchy) as the ‘Old Jews’ make fun of themselves as well as followers of every other religion.

In this futuristic capitalist dystopia, an outbreak of disease killed millions and resulted in heavily regulated human interaction (and intimacy). Anjali has a government-issued job as the madam to a sex robot. The Rocky Horror Show is an outrageous assemblage of – and humorous tribute to – the most stereotypical science fiction and horror movies, Marvel comics, Frankie Avalon/Annette Funicello outings and rock ‘n’ roll of every vintage. A former NFL Raiders Cheerleader’s journey to Jewish Orthodoxy… and beyond.

PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL:  Sandy Gelfound’s life story is a fascinating tale filled with love, laughter… and cheerleading.  Beginning August 3rd, the multi-talented comedienne, raconteur, and former NFL Raider cheerleader will spend four weeks at the PGA Arts Center performing her one person show, The Kosher Cheerleader.  The production will run through August 27th. 

Gelfound, who has performed stand-up alongside the likes of Jerry Seinfeld and Jay Leno, tap dances, pom-pom waves, eats, shops, writes, and cartwheels through her life’s journey, which begins with her father – a Borscht Belt performer, who was a Jewish atheist: “He knew he was one of the Chosen People, he just didn’t know by Whom,” she explained recently; and her mother, a Russian Orthodox gypsy flamenco dancer who taught her to play the castanets.  “Theirs was like a marriage between Carmen Miranda and Jackie Mason,” she has said.

Gelfound spent five years as a Raiderette, travelling with the team, and making an impressive $35 per game: “I loved being an NFL Cheerleader,” she says, “But my Jewish grandmother didn’t understand my excitement. “It’s the Raiders, Grandma – I get to cheer for the team – I get to go to the game”.  And she said, “Other people go to the game. The owner’s wife, that’s a job for a Jewish girl!”

Born with a hole in her heart, Sandy Gelfound’s childhood was filled with drama and trauma. Her decision to write, and subsequently perform her story “Came to me during my morning meditation,” she explains.  “The next thing I know I have a clothesline in my kitchen, pinning up and arranging the order of the scenes to a play about my life.  I wanted to share with the world my story…. hoping I can give some experience, strength, hope, and lots of laughter to anyone who is overcoming any hardships.

“In Judaism the Rabbi’s say, “Gams zu la tova” – everything is for the good,” she continues. “I was born with a hole in my heart. How can that be good?  Well after many years the doctors have finally said that nothing needs to be fixed…the hole never grew bigger…only my heart did!”

MARGATE, FL:  20 years ago, multi-talented actor, director, comedian, singer, and Jewish cultural activist Avi Hoffman brought his award winning New York show Avi Hoffman’s Too Jewish?  to the Stage Door Theatre. His life was never the same. Now, he’s back! Avi Hoffman’s Too Jewish? will open on July 19th, and run through August 3rd.

Avi Hoffman’s Too Jewish? premiered Off-Broadway at New York’s Houseman Theatre in 1994 and has been presented thousands of times all over the world, as well as on the national PBS network.  Hoffman, a child of Holocaust survivors, was taught at an early age to appreciate the beauty and depth of Jewish literature, music, and tradition.  In Avi Hoffman’s Too Jewish? he combines a delightful mix of music, comedy, impersonations, and personal reminiscences to take his audiences on a journey through his own Jewish roots, and to illustrate the traditions and history of his beloved Yiddish culture.

“I couldn’t be more excited to be returning to Stage Door for the 20th anniversary of the production that changed my life,” Hoffman says. “With the incredible success of Too Jewish? at the Stage Door, we moved our family to Florida, and the rest, as they say, is history!  This will be the ORIGINAL production, with some new perspectives on how my life has dramatically changed since then.”


Avi Hoffman’s Too Jewish? has won multiple awards, including Performer of the Year ’95 by NY Press Magazine, and the prestigious Los Angeles Ovation Award as Best Actor in a Musical in 2001. His recent portrayal of Willie Loman in the Yiddish production of Death of a Salesman garnered him a NY Drama Desk Award nomination for Best Actor in a Play, and was featured last summer at The Ashkenaz Festival in Toronto, the largest Yiddishkayt Festival in North America. He has also been nominated for both the NY Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle awards.  His 2012 Carbonell Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Musical was in recognition of his work as Wilbur Turnblad in Hairspray at Actors Playhouse in Miami. He performs worldwide and has proudly worked in nearly every professional South Florida theatre, garnering multiple awards and nominations. Hoffman was also featured in the hit Starz series ‘Magic City’ and Netflix’s ‘Bloodline’, as well as USA’s ‘The Glades’ and NBC’s ‘Law and Order’. His upcoming Yiddish film Shehita (Slaughter) will be featured in next season’s Miami Jewish Film Festival. Hoffman recently directed and performed in the world premiere of Unlikely Heroes, and performed in the Daryl Roth Florida tour of Stars of David. His two popular sequels to Too Jewish? – Too Jewish Two!, and Still Jewish After All These Years, have been seen throughout North America.


Avi Hoffman’s Too Jewish? will run from July 19 – August 3 at Stage Door Theatre. The theatre is located at 8036 Sample Road, in Margate.  Performances are Wednesdays at 8 p.m. and Thursdays at 2 p.m.

MARGATE, FL:  Julius, Adolph, Herbie, Leo, and Milton – names that are not at all familiar in the American comedic lexicon.  However, almost any mention of Groucho, Harpo, Zeppo, Chico, and Gummo will immediately elicit nods of recognition, and in most cases happy smiles.   Broward Stage Door Theatre will present the musical Minnie’s Boys – the tale of how the sons of Minnie Marx became The Marx Brothers – one of the most beloved and respected comedy acts in history.  Minnie’s Boys will open on June 30th and run through August 6th in Stage Door’s Theatre 2.

Based on the works of Groucho’s son, Arthur Marx, Minnie’s Boys is a song-filledcelebration of the Marx Brothers’ early years – the beginning of their rise to fame and fortune. But it is really the story of their mother, Minnie Marx, who shaped, molded, encouraged, cajoled, pushed and pulled them towards their eventual – and in her mind – inevitable success.

Peter J. Loewy will direct and choreograph Minnie’s Boys.  Loewy has directed the show before – at his own Fourm Theater in Metuchen, New Jersey; he recently directed Stage Door’s Carbonell-recommended production of Nine: “I love this show,” he says. It’s rarely done.  It has a great score by Larry Grossman, and it’s full of humor and heart.”

Loewy has cast Melody Lieberman as Minnie Marx, Jonathan Eisele as Julie Marx (Groucho), Michael Brown as Adolph Marx (Harpo), Will Nash Broyles as Leonard Marx (Chico), R. J. Magee as Herbie Marx (Zeppo), Steddy Amory as Milton Marx (Gummo), and Ben Prayz as Sam “Frenchie” Marx.  Also in the cast are Matthew Korinko, Sean Dorazio, Whitney Grace, Hilleah Neve, Ellie Pattison, Caterina Randazzo, and Ashlley Rodriguez.

Dave Nagy is the show’s musical director, and Kevin Black will assist Loewy with the choreography. Minnie’s Boys’ set design is by Michael McClain, lighting design is by Dean Landhuis, sound design by Rushnay Henry, costumes by Jerry Sturdefant, and Paul O’Donnell takes care of operations.  The show’s stage manager is Nancy Clay.

Minnie’s Boys will run from June 30 – August 6 at Stage Door Theatre. The theatre is located at 8036 Sample Road, in Margate.
