MARGATE, FL:  Stage Door Theatre is on the move! The award-winning theatre company has been awarded an exclusive contract to mount their productions at the Lauderhill Performing Arts Center beginning in September 2018.

“This is such a great opportunity for us!” Stage Door’s Executive Producer Derelle (Dee) Bunn enthuses.  “It’s the perfect 25th Anniversary gift!  LPAC is a brand new modern and up-to-date facility – it has everything we need and more.  Its main auditorium can be adjusted to become a more intimate space, or accommodate over 1100 patrons.  It has state of the art lighting and sound equipment, great dressing room space, and a lovely Green Room – things we’ve been missing for years!”

The timing is perfect for the well-regarded theatre company; their audience is growing, and their productions are becoming more elaborate. In fact, Bunn says, they’ve simply outgrown the building they have occupied for the past 25 years which is in great need of repairs.

“The timing for this opportunity couldn’t be better,” she explains. “Being at the Lauderhill Performing Arts Center will give us so much space to grow…  And we’ll even have outside signage!

“We’re going to finish our season at our current venue,” Bunn continues.  “Patrons can purchase their tickets through our box office or online – for this season’s productions at Stage Door in Margate or for next season’s shows at LPAC. We’re doing everything we can to make the transition as easy as possible for our patrons.  We’ve started telling our audiences about our move and their response has been absolutely 100% favorable.”

Stage Door Theatre will bring a solid background of award-winning theatrical productions and a roster of over 30,000 patrons to LPAC when they arrive in September.  The company was recently honored with three Carbonell Award nominations:  For Sarah Gracel as Best Actress in a Musical and Elijah Word for Best Supporting Actor in a Musical – both for Dreamgirls.  And Kat Gold scored a nomination as Best Supporting Actress in a Musical for the company’s production of Nine.

Bunn, along with Stage Door’s Associate Producer Kevin Black are looking forward to continuing to build upon the company’s already solid reputation, as well as grow their audience in the new venue.  “This move is a total win/win for everyone involved,” Black says.

Lauderhill Commissioner M. Margaret Bates is also excited about LPAC’s new residents. “We welcome Broward Stage Door Theatre Company and all of their patrons to our newly opened Lauderhill Performing Arts Center,” she says. “We look forward to their upcoming season of fantastic Broadway shows – we know they’ll love their new home!”

The Lauderhill Performing Arts Center’s mission is to provide diverse, quality arts programming to the City of Lauderhill and its neighboring communities.  The facility opened in January 2016 and is a LEED Silver Performing Arts Structure. (LEED certification provides independent verification of a building or neighborhood’s green features).

MARGATE, FL: The World Premiere of Imagine – A Beatles Celebration, created by award-winning director/choreographer Kevin Black, will open at Stage Door Theatre on February 2nd and run through March 11th.  Black, the creator of numerous Stage Door hits, such as The Soul of Motor City, Swing! Swing! Swing! and What’s New Pussycat? has taken the music we all remember by the band that changed the face of music, and put his own inimitable spin on it.

The Beatles left a permanent mark in history with their vast songbook of now timeless classics.  Imagine honors their incredible legacy with a joyous celebration of these legendary musical innovators. More than 24 Beatles tunes are included in the production: “Twist and Shout”, “I Saw Her Standing There”, “Hard Day’s Night”, “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”, “Blackbird”, “Day Tripper”, “Let It Be”, and Hey Jude”, are just a few of the iconic songs that will be interpreted by a cast of five talented singers and a live three-piece band.

And the world will live as one.”  “This message by John Lennon, was the engine that drove me to create Imagine,” Kevin Black explains. “John, Paul, George, and Ringo sang about what we felt, what we thought, what we hoped to do, and how love could change every one of us. The world was fun with them in it!

“Creating this show has become a unique challenge – there are so many great tunes to choose from,” he continues. “I mean this could easily be a three act show with all the material!  Imagine presents these timeless classics in new and refreshing forms; my overall goal is to present an evening of great music with a message of hope and peace for the future.”

Black has chosen Charrise Shields, Cameron Jordan, Rio Peterson, Jordana Forrest, and Mario Castro to interpret the music that shaped and influenced so many lives and in some cases, musical careers.  They will be backed by pianist Sarah Statler, who most recently wowed audiences with both her musical prowess and strong vocals in Black’s Tickling the Ivories.  She’ll be joined by percussionist Roy Fantel, and guitarist/bassist Rupert Ziawinski.

The Musical Director for Imagine is Ben Bagby and the Assistant Musical Director is Sarah Statler. The show’s Set Design is by Stage Door Scenic Design and Kevin Black. Lighting is by Ardean Landhuis, and Costume Design is by Jerry Sturdefant.  Joes-Luis Ramos is the production’s Stage Manager.

MARGATE, FL:  Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller – not necessarily household names in today’s pop music or theatrical worlds.   But for decades – especially from the mid 1950’s to the mid 1960’s – Leiber and Stoller were one of America’s most successful songwriting teams.  Stage Door Theatre will honor this iconic duo when they present Smokey Joe’s Café – The Songs of Leiber and Stoller, a compendium of some of their greatest hits, in the popular Margate venue’s intimate Theatre 2 from December 15th through January 14th.

Lieber and Stoller wrote together for over 60 years, creating enduring classics in a variety of genres including R & B, Pop, Jazz, Cabaret, and most notably, Rock & Roll. Among those who recorded their songs were Ben E. King (‘Stand By Me’, ‘I (Who Have Nothing)’, ‘Spanish Harlem’), The Drifters (‘There Goes My Baby’, Dance With Me’, ‘On Broadway’), and the Coasters (‘Searchin’, ‘Young Blood’, Yakety Yak’, ‘Charlie Brown’).  Elvis Presley recorded over 20 Lieber and Stoller songs, including some of his greatest hits: ‘Hound Dog’, ‘Jailhouse Rock’, ‘Loving You’, ‘Santa Clause is Back in Town’, ‘She’s Not You’, and ‘Treat Me Nice’ were all their compositions.

Smokey Joe’s Café features 39 Leiber and Stoller songs – some of their greatest, instantly recognizable hits, along with a few that won’t be quite as familiar, but are nonetheless fine examples of the duos’ extraordinary talent and versatility.

“This will be my 3rd production of Smokey Joe’s Café and I don’t think I’ll ever tire of this show,” says Kevin Black, who will direct and choreograph the show.  “I’m very fortunate to have found an incredibly talented cast that continue to impress me every day. Black’s cast includes Kat Gold, Stephanie LoVerde, Austin Rivers, Andre Russell, Michael Schneider, Charisse Shields, Aili Venho, and Nethaneel Williams.

MARGATE, FL:   Stage Door Theatre will present the world premiere of award-winning director/choreograher Kevin Black’s newest production, Tickling the Ivories, beginning October 13th.  The production will run in the venue’s Theatre 2 through November 19th.

Tickling the Ivories celebrates and showcases the instrument that inspired artists ranging from Mozart to Liberace.*

“One of my biggest regrets in life is quitting piano lessons when I was 12,” Black says. “Instead I decided to move into dance class. However, to this day, I wish I could play the piano. Thankfully, I have Ben Bagby and Michael Friedman to translate my concepts into arrangements for pianists and vocalists.

“Ivories highlights the piano, first and foremost,” Black continues. Featuring songs by famous pianists and songwriters from several centuries, Tickling the Ivories combines classical pieces with 20th Century pop classics by the likes of Billy Joel, Elton John, Carole King, Alicia Keys, Lady Gaga, Ray Charles, Barry Manilow and many others.

“We are taking a new approach to this revue – we are letting the songs, talent and creativity of the rehearsal process dictate the structure of the show,” Black explains. “For the first time in my career, I’m allowing the process to flow without a vast amount of structure in the beginning. We are just rounding up week one of our process and so far, I’m completely blown away by the talent of the pianists and the incredible vocalists.”

Pianists Michael Friedman and Sarah Statler will ‘tickle the ivories’ for the production.  They will be accompanied by percussionist Roy Fantel and bassist Rupert Ziawinski.   Vocalists Sandra Marante, Devon Norris, Candice Shedd-Thompson, and Ryan Stutz round out the ensemble.

Musical arrangements for Tickling the Ivories are by Ben Bagby, Kevin, Statler, and Michael Friedman, and vocal arrangements are by Ben Bagby and Kevin Black.  The show’s Musical Director is Ben Bagby; Michael Friedman is the Assistant Musical Director.  The set has been designed by Michael McClain, the lighting design is by Ardean Landhuis, and costume design is by Jerry Sturdefant.  Paul O’Donnell is the show’s Production Manager.

*The modern piano was invented sometime between 1698-1700 by Bartolomeo Cristofori of Italy. Bartolomeo named his invention un cimbalo di cipresso di piano e forte (“a keyboard of cypress with soft and loud”), which eventually was abbreviated into “Piano”. Since its invention, the piano has have been used to create some of the most beautiful classical music known to man.

MARGATE, FL:  Saturday Night Fever caused a sensation when it debuted in movie theatres in 1977.   The film’s earthy dialogue, gritty story, and throbbing disco music permeated American pop culture for years.  The movie’s soundtrack with music by Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb – The Bee Gees – became one of the top selling soundtrack albums of all time. Stage Door Theatre will present Saturday Night Fever – the stage adaptation of the iconic movie, from September 1st through October 15th.

This musical adaptation celebrates the 40th anniversary of the classic film.  Based on Nik Cohn’s 1975 New York Magazine article “Tribal Rites of the New Saturday Night” and the Norman Wexler screenplay it inspired, the musical focuses on Tony Manero, a Brooklyn youth whose weekend is spent at the local discotheque. There, as he luxuriates in the admiration of the crowd and a growing relationship with Stephanie Mangano, he can temporarily forget the realities of his life, including a dead-end job in a paint store and his gang of deadbeat friends.

Kevin Black will direct the production: “I remember faithfully watching Saturday Night Fever over and over as a teenager,” he says.  “This was before my first visit to New York.  Coming from an extremely rural town in South Carolina, I was in awe of this world I knew nothing about.  All I knew was that I wanted to dance.  This movie, along with Dance Fever and American Bandstand, gave me my life calling.  When we decided to add Fever as our Season 25 opener, the response was overwhelming.”

Musial numbers such as “Stayin’ Alive”, “Night Fever”, “You Should Be Dancing”, and “Jive Talkin’”  will all be included in the production, and Black has engaged a talented cast to bring the show to life.  Daniel Velasquez will play Tony, Alexandra Milbrath will play Stephanie, and Sandi Stock will play Annette.  Also cast are Ben Prayz, Bruno Faria, Danny Durr, Kat Gold, Elissa Solomon, Josh Connor, Steddy Amory, Sean Davis, Seth Dorazio, Yosefa Jennifer Fain, Richard Anthony Forbes, Jenny Hegarty, Natalie McPherson, Christopher Rodriguez, Eduardo Uribe, Avery Wittaker, and Kelly Ziegler.

The show’s production team includes Musical Director Michael Friedman, Choreographer Danny Durr, Set Designer Sean McClelland, Lighting Designer Dean Landhuis, and Costume Designer Jerry Sturdivant.  Stage manager is Nancy Clay, ASM/Sound Engineer is Rushnay Henry, and Paul O’Donnell is the production’s Operations Manager.

MARGATE, FL:  Stage Door Theatre will present Neil Simon’s classic comedy The Sunshine Boys in the popular venue’s intimate Theatre 2, from August 18th through September 24th.

The Sunshine Boys – Al Lewis and Willie Clark – were Vaudeville stars and partners for over forty years, but haven’t spoken to one another for over eleven. When Willie’s nephew Ben approaches his uncle about reuniting with his ex-partner to perform one of their classic skits on a CBS television comedy, their eventual reunion is fraught with acrimony, arguments, memories, and laughter.

“The Sunshine Boys is the fourth Neil Simon play I’ve directed and I think it’s his best,” says the show’s director, Michael Leeds. “It’s incredibly funny, I mean rolling in the aisles funny, and also quite touching.  It’s based on a real actor named Willie Howard who was a very eccentric vaudeville comedian.  Simon got the idea of taking Willie and giving him a partner whom he hasn’t spoken to in twelve years and now they’re going to be on an Ed Sullivan special – and they can’t stand each other.

“I was lucky enough to get a great cast led by Michael Small and Peter Librach, two pros who have these characters in their bones,” Leeds continues. “There’s a hysterical scene where they’re rehearsing the routine, arguing about everything from the line delivery to the furniture placement and it has one of the funniest moments I’ve seen on stage.  If there was a definition of “crowd pleaser” in the dictionary, it would say: ‘Neil Simon’s The Sunshine Boys’.”
Along with Small and Librach, Leeds has cast Ben Sandomir as Willie’s nephew Ben Silverman.  Also in the cast are George Schiavone, Vicki Klein, Jeanin Gangloff, and Elijah Pearson-Martinez.

The show’s production team includes Set Designer Michael McClain, Lighting Designer Dean Landhuis, and Costume Designer Jerry Sturdivant.  Stage manager is Jose-Luis Ramos, and Paul O’Donnell is the productions Operations Manager.

In Avi Hoffman’s Too Jewish? the award-winning actor/director/comedian combines a delightful mix of music, comedy, impersonations, and personal reminiscences to take his audiences on a journey through his own Jewish roots, and to illustrate the traditions and history of his beloved Yiddish Culture.
Avi Hoffman’s Too Jewish? premiered Off-Broadway at New York’s Houseman Theatre in 1994 and has been presented thousands of times all over the world, as well as on the national PBS network. Hoffman, a child of Holocaust survivors, was taught at an early age to appreciate the beauty and depth of Jewish literature, music, and tradition.

Old Jews Telling Jokes showcases five actors in a comedy that pays tribute to and reinvents classic jokes of the past and present.   It celebrates the rich tradition of Jewish humor “and all the rabbis, complaining wives, fed-up husbands, patience-challenged physicians, gossiping ladies and competitive men” populating it. The humor can be suggestive (sometimes even raunchy) as the ‘Old Jews’ make fun of themselves as well as followers of every other religion.

My Son the Waiter:  A Jewish Tragedy is the story of Brad Zimmerman’s struggle to fulfill his dream and ‘make it’ as a comedic actor in New York, He spent 29 years “temporarily” waiting tables in New York, all the while chasing a career in acting and comedy.  Brad tells of his pursuit, along with stories about his childhood, family, and misbegotten love life with warmth, wit, self-deprecating humor, and wicked charm, and combines his years of training as an actor with his innate comedic talent.

In this futuristic capitalist dystopia, an outbreak of disease killed millions and resulted in heavily regulated human interaction (and intimacy). Anjali has a government-issued job as the madam to a sex robot. When Ven, the maintenance man, finds the robot exhibiting unusual and illegal human-like behavior, the pair strike up an uneasy black market partnership; she expands her robot’s human-like repertoire of behaviors and he brings in the high-paying clientele. But when the clients start asking for more, and want to pay more, Anjali must decide just how far she’s willing to go.

The Rocky Horror Show is an outrageous assemblage of – and humorous tribute to – the most stereotypical science fiction and horror movies, Marvel comics, Frankie Avalon/Annette Funicello outings and rock ‘n’ roll of every vintage. The play (upon which the classic film The Rocky Horror Picture Show is based) has grown from an experimental production originally produced in a small London theatre in June 1973, to a cult phenomenon with fans world-wide.  The musical tells the story of a newly engaged couple who, when caught in a storm, find refuge in the home of a decidedly unusual scientist who is madly working towards unveiling his latest and greatest creation.

When James is sent by his conniving aunts to chop down their old fruit tree, he discovers a magic potion that results in a tremendous peach… and launches a journey of enormous proportions. That recognizable rhythmic tap combination – the time step –  a term that derives from the era of great tap dancers who used their distinctive footwork to set the pace of the music.  A mix of European Jig, Reel Steps, Clog, and African Rhythms all combined to create an exciting new dance style.

MARGATE, FL:  20 years ago, multi-talented actor, director, comedian, singer, and Jewish cultural activist Avi Hoffman brought his award winning New York show Avi Hoffman’s Too Jewish?  to the Stage Door Theatre. His life was never the same. Now, he’s back! Avi Hoffman’s Too Jewish? will open on July 19th, and run through August 3rd.

Avi Hoffman’s Too Jewish? premiered Off-Broadway at New York’s Houseman Theatre in 1994 and has been presented thousands of times all over the world, as well as on the national PBS network.  Hoffman, a child of Holocaust survivors, was taught at an early age to appreciate the beauty and depth of Jewish literature, music, and tradition.  In Avi Hoffman’s Too Jewish? he combines a delightful mix of music, comedy, impersonations, and personal reminiscences to take his audiences on a journey through his own Jewish roots, and to illustrate the traditions and history of his beloved Yiddish culture.

“I couldn’t be more excited to be returning to Stage Door for the 20th anniversary of the production that changed my life,” Hoffman says. “With the incredible success of Too Jewish? at the Stage Door, we moved our family to Florida, and the rest, as they say, is history!  This will be the ORIGINAL production, with some new perspectives on how my life has dramatically changed since then.”


Avi Hoffman’s Too Jewish? has won multiple awards, including Performer of the Year ’95 by NY Press Magazine, and the prestigious Los Angeles Ovation Award as Best Actor in a Musical in 2001. His recent portrayal of Willie Loman in the Yiddish production of Death of a Salesman garnered him a NY Drama Desk Award nomination for Best Actor in a Play, and was featured last summer at The Ashkenaz Festival in Toronto, the largest Yiddishkayt Festival in North America. He has also been nominated for both the NY Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle awards.  His 2012 Carbonell Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Musical was in recognition of his work as Wilbur Turnblad in Hairspray at Actors Playhouse in Miami. He performs worldwide and has proudly worked in nearly every professional South Florida theatre, garnering multiple awards and nominations. Hoffman was also featured in the hit Starz series ‘Magic City’ and Netflix’s ‘Bloodline’, as well as USA’s ‘The Glades’ and NBC’s ‘Law and Order’. His upcoming Yiddish film Shehita (Slaughter) will be featured in next season’s Miami Jewish Film Festival. Hoffman recently directed and performed in the world premiere of Unlikely Heroes, and performed in the Daryl Roth Florida tour of Stars of David. His two popular sequels to Too Jewish? – Too Jewish Two!, and Still Jewish After All These Years, have been seen throughout North America.


Avi Hoffman’s Too Jewish? will run from July 19 – August 3 at Stage Door Theatre. The theatre is located at 8036 Sample Road, in Margate.  Performances are Wednesdays at 8 p.m. and Thursdays at 2 p.m.

MARGATE, FL:  Julius, Adolph, Herbie, Leo, and Milton – names that are not at all familiar in the American comedic lexicon.  However, almost any mention of Groucho, Harpo, Zeppo, Chico, and Gummo will immediately elicit nods of recognition, and in most cases happy smiles.   Broward Stage Door Theatre will present the musical Minnie’s Boys – the tale of how the sons of Minnie Marx became The Marx Brothers – one of the most beloved and respected comedy acts in history.  Minnie’s Boys will open on June 30th and run through August 6th in Stage Door’s Theatre 2.

Based on the works of Groucho’s son, Arthur Marx, Minnie’s Boys is a song-filledcelebration of the Marx Brothers’ early years – the beginning of their rise to fame and fortune. But it is really the story of their mother, Minnie Marx, who shaped, molded, encouraged, cajoled, pushed and pulled them towards their eventual – and in her mind – inevitable success.

Peter J. Loewy will direct and choreograph Minnie’s Boys.  Loewy has directed the show before – at his own Fourm Theater in Metuchen, New Jersey; he recently directed Stage Door’s Carbonell-recommended production of Nine: “I love this show,” he says. It’s rarely done.  It has a great score by Larry Grossman, and it’s full of humor and heart.”

Loewy has cast Melody Lieberman as Minnie Marx, Jonathan Eisele as Julie Marx (Groucho), Michael Brown as Adolph Marx (Harpo), Will Nash Broyles as Leonard Marx (Chico), R. J. Magee as Herbie Marx (Zeppo), Steddy Amory as Milton Marx (Gummo), and Ben Prayz as Sam “Frenchie” Marx.  Also in the cast are Matthew Korinko, Sean Dorazio, Whitney Grace, Hilleah Neve, Ellie Pattison, Caterina Randazzo, and Ashlley Rodriguez.

Dave Nagy is the show’s musical director, and Kevin Black will assist Loewy with the choreography. Minnie’s Boys’ set design is by Michael McClain, lighting design is by Dean Landhuis, sound design by Rushnay Henry, costumes by Jerry Sturdefant, and Paul O’Donnell takes care of operations.  The show’s stage manager is Nancy Clay.

Minnie’s Boys will run from June 30 – August 6 at Stage Door Theatre. The theatre is located at 8036 Sample Road, in Margate.

MARGATE, FL:  Last fall Stage Door Theatre’s Theatre 2 jumped and jived with Kevin Black’s exuberant production of Swing! Swing! Swing! The Carbonell Recommended musical revue was so popular with Stage Door audiences, that the theatre’s Executive Producer Dee Wilson-Bunn decided it would be the perfect vehicle to ‘jazz up’ Stage Door’s 2017 summer season.  Swing! Swing! Swing! will open once again on June 16th in the ever-popular venue’s Theatre 2, and run through July 30th.

“Swing music has its roots in Jazz, beginning in New Orleans and Kansas City then eventually moving its way across the nation.” Black explained last October.  “Once it reached New York City, the phenomenon quickly became the pop music of its day. Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller took the jazz infused sounds of George Gershwin and Louis Armstrong and invented a genre that featured a strong drum and bass line, creating that unmistakable rhythm that lead to the high energy dance styles of the jitterbug and the jive.

“Swing! Swing! Swing! pays tribute to these Jazz and Swing classics, told through various thematic groupings of songs and artists,” he continued. “That Big Band sound, normally created by a 20 plus piece swing band, will be reimagined by utilizing live piano, bass and drums, while incorporating the cast as the brass section through rhythmic vocals and harmonized scatting. The show is set in an Art Deco style club, masterfully envisioned by Michael McClain. We are certain the more senior patrons of Stage Door will thoroughly enjoy reliving these timeless classics. Our hope is to bring this magnificent musical style to a new generation of audiences.”

Just a few of the classic pieces that will be revisited include ‘Tuxedo Junction’,’In the Mood’, ‘Stardust’, ‘Stormy Weather’, ‘I Got Rhythm’, and of course ‘It Don’t Mean a Thing.’

Three of the show’s original cast will return for this production of Swing!:  Alexandra Van Hasselt, Sharyn Peoples, Elijah Word have all signed on to reprise their roles.  They will be joined by Pasqualino Beltempo, Rebeca Diaz, and Christopher Patterson.

Kevin Black is the owner of Kevin Black Productions, a global company providing entertainment to cruise lines, corporate events, resorts, musical theater productions, ,and tours. Kevin’s extensive cruise line work includes costume design, choreography, production, and direction on Norwegian, Saga, Royal Caribbean and Asuka Cruise Lines. Kevin’s work can currently be seen at the Villa de Palmar Resorts in Cabo, Mexico. His most recent work includes Laffing Matterz at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts; 8 Track, I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change, and Rags at The Plaza Theatre in Manalapan, Florida; What’s New Pussycat?, On The Radio, A Chorus Line, Promises, Promises, Pompadour, Evita, and The Soul of Motor City at The Stage Door Theatre in Margate, Florida. He also recently directed and choreographed Spamalot, Tommy, The Rocky Horror Show, and Into The Woods for Entre’Acte Theatrix performing at The Crest Theatre in Delray Beach, Florida. Kevin is the producer, director and choreographer of an original children’s show, The Adventures of Bella & Harry, and is the Artistic Director for CAST (Career in the Arts, School of Talent) located in Cooper City, Florida.
