LAUDERHILL, FL:  Stage Door Theatre’s first production at Lauderhill Performing Arts Center (LPAC), their brand new, state-of-the-art home, will be the multiple Tony Award-winning La Cage Aux Folles.   The production will open on August 31st and run through September 23rd.   (The theatre will celebrate the move to their new home at a Gala Party on September 1st – details to be announced.)

After twenty years of un-wedded bliss, Georges and Albin, two men partnered for better-or-worse experience a bit of both when Georges’ son (fathered during a one-night fling) announces his impending marriage to the daughter of a bigoted, right-wing politician.  Further complicating the situation is the ‘family business’: Albin and Georges run a drag nightclub in St. Tropez, where Albin is the ‘star’ performer, ZaZa.

The musical, based on the French play by Jean Poiret, was adapted for the stage by Broadway royalty – Harvey Fierstein wrote the book, and Jerry Herman provided the music and lyrics.  The original production received nine Tony nominations, and won six, including Best Musical, Best Score, and Best Book.  It is the first musical to win the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical twice.

Carbonell nominee (as both actor and director) Bruce Linser will direct the production: “I see this show as somewhat of a period piece,” Linser explains. “It is set in the 70s, a time when gay people and drag queens were still fighting to come out of the shadows. This story of a young straight man forcing his parents to change themselves and their lives so drastically – or these two gay men being willing to suffer that humiliation so willingly – would seem ridiculous or even downright hateful today. Not that gay people aren’t still marginalized. With lawsuits around gay wedding cakes and “religious freedom” laws, there is definitely a culture of fear and hatred for the LGBT community, and there are looming signs of it being allowed to grow under the current administration in Washington DC. So in a way this production of this show at this time is a bit of a warning. “Those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it”, as they say. We need to remember where we’ve been, so we can prevent ourselves from going there again in the future. And that’s for all of us – gay and straight alike. What we need right now is empathy and understanding for each other, and what better way to explore that than through the joy and thoughtfulness that is musical theatre?

“To that end, we are following much more of the style of the most recent revival of the show,” he continues.  “Harvey Fierstein, who wrote the book to La Cage, has said that the original production, while glamorous and beautiful, wasn’t really “right” for the world of the play. It was glitzed and glittered up for Broadway, in large part to make it palatable and acceptable for the Broadway audience at the time. And it worked – it’s a beloved, Tony-winning show, gay relationships now enjoy widespread support and acceptance, and drag queens have their own TV shows! Which is why we can now take that shiny veneer off of the show, at least a little bit, so we can explore more of the darker truth that the original movie and show were revealing. Don’t get me wrong – there will still be gorgeous costumes and fabulous dance numbers. It’s a musical, after all! But we’re also looking for the heart and soul underneath all of that … the fear and love that drives these people to be who they are and do what they do. The humanity of these characters and their relationships. That, to me, makes for interesting, powerful, and entertaining theatre.”

Linser has assembled a top-notch cast to populate the Riviera town of St. Tropez:  Larry Buzzeo will play Albin/ZaZa, and Jamie Parnell will play Georges.  2017 Carbonell Award-winner Elijah Word will play Jacob, and Connor Delves will play Jean-Michel.  Dalia Aleman and James Skiba, who recently starred in Stage Door’s production of Victor/Victoria will also be featured. Other cast members include 2017 Carbonell nominee Kat Gold, Alexandra Van Hasselt, JR Coley, Rebeca Diaz, Sean Davis, Nicole Kinzel, Kevin Lozano, Courtney Poston, Dyllan Vallier, Stephen Hohendorf, Korey Harlow, Jonathan Eisele, Johanna Moise, and Cat Pagano.

Paul Reekie will serve as the production’s Musical Director; Choreography is by Danny Durr, and the show’s Assistant Choreographer is Jenny Hegarty.  Scenic Design is by Michael McLain; Lighting Design is by Ardean Landhuis; Sound Design is by King Raymonvil; and Costumes are by Jerry Sturdevant.  The production’s Stage Manager is Nancy Clay.

La Cage Aux Folles will run from August 31 to September 24 at Stage Door Theatre’s new location, the Lauderhill Performing Arts Center (LPAC). The theatre is located at 3800 NW 11th Place, Lauderhill (33311), in the Central Broward Regional Park on the North East corner of Sunrise Boulevard and 441 (State Road 7).

(LPAC will charge $5 service fee per ticket, however if a package of four Stage Door shows is purchased the service fees will be waived.) Four women meet in a department store while shopping for black lace bras at a lingerie sale. After noticing unmistakable similarities to one another’s ‘situations’, the women compare comical (and eminently relatable) notes about their woeful hot flashes, mood swings, wrinkles, weight gain and much more. These women form a sisterhood and unique bond they share with the entire audience as they rejoice in celebrating that menopause is no longer “The Silent Passage.”

Inspired by a hot flash and a bottle of wine, Menopause The Musical® is a celebration of women who find themselves at any stage of “The Change.” The laughter-filled 90-minute production consistently gets audience members out of their seats and singing along to parodies from classic pop songs of the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s.

Now celebrating 17 years of female empowerment – GFour’s first production of Menopause The Musical® was in South Florida in 2004 – Menopause The Musical® is a hilarious groundbreaking celebration of women who are on the brink of, in the middle of, or have survived “The Change.” The show has evolved as a “grassroots” movement for women who deal with life adjustments after 40 by embracing each other and the road ahead.

BOCA RATON, FL:  Charles Schulz’s beloved comic strip will come to life in Boca Raton when Sol Children Theatre presents You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.  The musical, which recently celebrated its 50th anniversary, will run from August 3 – 19 at Sol Theatre in Boca Raton. 

The whole gang will be there:  bossy Lucy, hopelessly in love with piano prodigy Schroeder; perfectionist Sally, harassing blanket-toting Linus; Snoopy, in (or on) his doghouse, and of course ‘Blockhead’ himself, Charlie Brown.  Brief vignettes span the months from Valentine’s Day to Beethoven Day, from wild optimism to utter despair.  But through it all, the sweet, joyful innocence of the Peanuts gang stays true.

Courtney Poston will direct the production: “It is a pleasure to have the opportunity to direct You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown, and to help keep Peanuts alive for this younger generation,” she says. “I grew up on the comics and TV show, as did my parents (and grandparents), and this musical has a special place in my heart as I played “Sally” in a production in Boca years ago. The musical is written to be performed by adults, but I think it is even more charming to have children portray these iconic characters. They deliver the lines with such honesty, and don’t even have to think about “the funny”, it just comes out naturally.

“Charlie Brown and the gang deal with such relatable topics to young people (and adults, for that matter) such as: fitting in, bullying, struggling in school, breaking bad habits, valuing your friends, etc.” she continues.  “In our table read, we discussed some of these situations, and to quote the kids: “Sometimes people are hard on you, sometimes you’re hard on yourself, but it’s important to find happiness in the little things and to remember your friends and family love you.” 

Poston’s young cast consists of Ava Callahan as Charlie Brown (Boca Raton Community Middle School), Nisa Guvenilir as Lucy (Omni Middle School), Piper Fine as Snoopy (Citrus Cove Elementary School), Tillie Pepos-Lebrun as Schroeder (Pine Crest School),  Maureen Tracy as Linus (Somerset Academy), and Eden Wexler as Sally (Del Prado Elementary School).

Sara Elizabeth Grant who is acting as both the show’s producer and choreographer has seen the show’s young cast come together and form a special bond: “An overall theme throughout You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown is that though times may be difficult, at least you’re surrounded by those who have your back,” she says.  “This is a remarkably fitting production for our cast, where on the first day of rehearsal not a one of them knew each other and were so nervous, to now where they have built a sweet energetic family unit both on and off stage.  It’s encouraging to watch this young group of actors tackling such difficult material with ease and confidence.  They have truly embraced what it is to be the “Peanuts” and are bringing this musical to life.”

You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown’s lighting design is by Ardean Landhuis. The show’s Scenic Artist is Kate McVay and Costume Design is by Briana Earhart.  The production’s Stage Manager is Ava Cavasos with Kimmy Wilkinson as Assistant Stage Manager.

MARGATE, FL:  Stage Door Theatre’s final production in their long-time venue on Sample Road, Breaking Up Is Hard to Do, will open in Theatre 1 on July 6th and run through August 12th.   (The company’s next production, La Cage Aux Folles, will open in their new home at the Lauderhill Performing Arts Center on August 31st.)

The sweetly comic story is that of Marge and Lois who arrive at ‘Esther’s Paradise Resort’ Labor Day weekend 1960 on a holiday that was intended to be Marge’s honeymoon — until the groom left her at the altar.  It is set to the music of pop icon Neil Sedaka, and the score showcases 18 Sedaka classics, including “Where the Boys Are”, “Sweet Sixteen”, “Calendar Girl”, “Love Will Keep Us Together”, and of course, the chart-topping title song. 

Lois attempts to console Marge by setting her up with the resort’s handsome, self-obsessed singer Del Delmonaco, but her plans backfire when Del mistakenly assumes that Marge’s father can further his ambitions to become the next teen heartthrob on American Bandstand. Gazing forlornly at Marge from the wings is geekish cabana boy and aspiring songwriter Gabe.  And in the meantime, when he isn’t entertaining guests with his comical Borscht Belt shtick, house comedian Harvey is secretly carrying a torch for widowed resort owner Ester, who is more preoccupied with keeping her hotel open.

Stage Door Producer Derrelle Bunn has called upon Jonathan Van Dyke to direct the production:

“As a long-time Neil Sedaka fan, I was thrilled to find out his music was the inspiration for a new musical comedy,” Van Dyke says. “Breaking Up Is Hard to Do is a terrific theatrical collaboration of story and music. It has plenty of laughs, but has its share of poignancy too, as Mr. Sedaka seems to have a song for every emotion.

“I have always been drawn to ensemble shows and this cast of six is tremendous,” he continues. I am so pleased to have been invited back to Stage Door to be a part of this, and to be working with Caryl Fantel, who will lead our band. This team has work to do, but I am so looking forward to taking our audiences on a trip back to 1960 and the Catskills to enjoy the timeless music of Neil Sedaka.”

The cast of Breaking Up Is Hard to Do consists of Molly Shippy as Marge, Leigh Green as Lois, Trenton Bainbridge as Gabe, Bruno Faria as Del Delmonaco, Gail Byer as Esther, and Michael Small as Harvey.

Van Dyke will also serve as the show’s Choreographer, and Caryl Fantel is the production’s Musical Director. Set and Lighting design are by Ardean Landhuis, Costumes are by Jerry Sturdefant, and Nancy Clay is the production’s Stage Manager.

MARGATE, FL:  Comedy, romance, and music.  Set this delightful combination together in the stylish Parisian nightlife of the 1930s and ‘voila’ – you have the sophisticated and appealing musical Victor/Victoria, which will open on May 4th and run through June 10th in Stage Door Theatre’s Theatre One.

Victoria Grant is a penniless soprano, totally down on her luck when she meets Carroll Todd (Toddy), who takes her under his wing and offers her shelter on a wet, wintry night.  Toddy, who is also unemployed, comes up with what he considers an inspired idea:  with him as her manager, Victoria will pretend to be a man, and get a job singing as a female impersonator.  It all goes according to plan until Chicago ‘business man’ King Marchan arrives on the scene and finds himself attracted to ‘Count Victor Grazinski’.

Based on the 1982 award-winning film of the same name, Victor/Victoria is funny, provocative, and entertaining, and in many ways as relevant today as it was over 30 years ago.  Although light in spirit, it highlights the need for acceptance of individual differences, and the right of anyone to love whomever they choose.

“This show is one I’ve always wanted to do,” says Victor/Victoria’s director, Kevin Black.  “It’s funny, it’s jazzy, it’s got music by the great Henry Mancini, it’s set in Paris… what more could you ask!?  The characters are not just one-dimensional,” he continues, “And some of the situations are absolutely hilarious.  It’s been great fun to stage this one, and I know our audiences are going to enjoy seeing it as much as I’ve enjoyed directing it.”

Black has cast Dalia Aleman, who recently wowed audiences with her lovely soprano in Stage Door’s Carbonell recommended Nice Work If You Can Get It to play the title character(s).  She will be joined by Larry Buzzeo as Toddy, James Skiba as King Marchan, Troy Stanley as Squash Bernstein, Ashley Rubin as Norma Cassidy, Kevin Reilly as Sal Andretti, Mike Cartwright as Andre Cassell, and Michael Schneider as Henri Labisse.  Other cast members include Jerel Brown, Carly Dorman, Jonathan Eisele, Luis Gomez, Barry Kramer, Natalie McPherson, Cat Pagano, Elissa Solomon, Phyllis Spear, and Alexandra Van Hasselt.

BOCA RATON, FL:  Lightning Bolt Productions burst onto the Boca Raton theatre scene last August with their well-received production of The Addams Family at the Boca Black Box Center for the Arts.  The success of the fledgling company’s first effort encouraged the company’s young founder Jessie Hoffman, to ‘bump it up a level’: their next production, Young Frankenstein – The Mel Brooks Musical, will open on April 13th at West Boca Performing Arts Center at West Boca High School*.  The show will run through April 22nd

Hoffman, who has already amassed an impressive list of theatrical credits at age 27, will direct the production.  She is enthusiastic – and very serious about her theatre company. “I want to bring more professional theatre to Boca Raton,” she explains.  “I want to give young, up and coming local professional and soon to be professional actors a chance to show what they can do, and to show local audiences they don’t have to go far to see excellent theatre – it’s right here in their own back yard.”

Jessie Hoffman grew up in Boca Raton.  She attended Dreyfoos School of the Arts and is a graduate of Boca Raton High School. She also completed studies at the New York Film Academy in New York, NY majoring in their Musical Theater program. Jessie has won singing and acting competitions from Florida to New Mexico and has performed and worked with various celebrities including Pat Cooper and Pete Barbutti. One of her proudest moments was being chosen as a “long lost member of The Addams Family” by the original Broadway cast of The Addams Family, which included such stars as Nathan Lane, Bebe Neuwirth, Kevin Chamberlin, Krysta Rodriguez, and Wesley Taylor.

Jessie has had leading and supporting roles in many productions including the Off Broadway hit The Fantasticks, The Wizard of Oz, The Addams Family, Reefer Madness, Next to Normal, The Sound of Music, Into the Woods, RENT, Spring Awakening, Footloose, Gypsy, Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, and 13 the Musical. As a director she has worked on such shows as Annie, The Addams Family, Young Frankenstein, 13 the Musical, Peter Pan, The Wizard of Oz, Alice In Wonderland, Seussical, Willy Wonka, and many musical revues she wrote and put together herself.  Jessie has also worked and directed at Children’s Theaters and camps for over eight years and enjoys nothing more than sharing her love of theater with kids of all ages.

Hoffman is already hard at work directing the cast of Young Frankenstein – several of whom are Addams Family returns including Jonathan Cabrera who will play Igor, and Max Miller who will play Frederick Frankenstein. Jessie herself will play Inga.  The young dynamo has no qualms about handling the double-duty roles of directing and acting.  “I played Wednesday in The Addams Family, she says, “and it worked out really well… no problem at all!”

When asked how she came up with the name ‘Lightning Bolt Productions’, Hoffman is eager to explain: “Growing up, all the stories that had a major impact on me in a positive way had something to do with lightning,” she says. “Whether it was Harry Potter, The Flash, Struck By Lightning, and even a character’s costume in a Youtube series created by Thomas Sanders… these were the stories that inspired me, and I want the shows that my company puts on to give the audience that same inspired and positive feeling that those books, movies, and series gave me.”

MARGATE, FL:  Bootleggers and ‘business men’, duchesses and dancers, and senators and ‘servants’ will populate Stage Door’s Theatre 1 when Nice Work If You Can Get It opens on March 2nd.   The production will run through April 15th.

It’s 1927. Playboy Jimmy Winter is celebrating yet another marriage.  Three thugs are trying to figure out where to hide 400 cases of gin and their beautiful bootlegger boss Billie Bendix is looking for a place to stash the hooch and hide out from the Prohibitionists.  Add some chorus girls, a Vice Squad, and of course a romance or two to the mix; season this soufflé with the glorious music of George and Ira Gershwin, and voila! Nice Work If You Can Get It, the riotous multiple Tony and Drama Desk Award-winning musical comedy takes all these ingredients and creates the epitome of a 1920’s screwball comedy perfect for 21st Century audiences.

“Nice Work If You Can Get It, the ‘brand-new’ Gershwin musical, is a fun filled romp that harkens back to the days of prohibition and the speakeasies,” says the show’s director, Clayton Phillips. “Vice squads, rum runners, dancing girls, hi jinks and romance galore.  Audiences will sing along with the music and dance out of the theatre with a happy heart!”

Clayton Phillips is very pleased to be returning to Stage Door Theatre, where he last directed Deathtrap in 2013.  Phillips, who was Harold Prince’s assistant for the national tours of Kiss of the Spider Woman and Parade, is an award-winning director whose recent production of The Addams Family was nominated for 12 New Hampshire Theatre Awards and won 5.  He has also directed numerous national tours, including Ruthless, The Full Monty, The Mousetrap, Leading Ladies, Falsettos, and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf.

Phillips has cast T.J. Lamando, Rebecca Tucker, Michael Small, and Emily Freeman to portray Jimmy Winter, Billie Bendix, Bootlegger Cookie McGee, and ‘Modern Dancer’ Eileen Evergreen.  Other cast members include Michael Schneider (Duke Mahoney), Jerry Weinberg (Senator Max Evergreen), Dalia Aleman (Duchess Estonia Dulworth), Haley Jones (Jeannie Muldoon), Michael Collins (Chief Berry), and Gail Byer (Millicent Winter). Also cast are Austin Carrol, Jamie Lyn Cleary, Evan Dolan, Jonathan Eisele, Jennifer Fain, Connor Hubbard, Barry Kramer, Natalie McPherson, Sarah Rose, and Kelly Ziegler.

The Musical Director for Nice Work If You Can Get It is Dave Nagy; Choreography is by Danny Durr. The show’s Scenic Designer is Randall Parsons. Lighting Design is by Ardean Landhuis, Sound Design is by Rushnay Henry, and Costume Design is by Jerry Sturdefant.  Nancy Clay is the production’s Stage Manager.

PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL:  Halloween is just around the corner, and who better to celebrate with than the denizens of Dr. Frank N. Furter’s home-sweet-castle in Richard O’Brien’s beloved cult classic, The Rocky Horror Show.   And Entr’Acte Theatrix is inviting audiences to come do the Time Warp again… when they present ‘Rocky’ at The PGA Arts Center October 19th through October 31st.   

The Rocky Horror Show is an outrageous assemblage of – and humorous tribute to – the most stereotypical science fiction and horror movies, Marvel comics, Frankie Avalon/Annette Funicello outings and rock ‘n’ roll of every vintage. The play (upon which the classic film The Rocky Horror Picture Show is based) has grown from an experimental production originally produced in a small London theatre in June 1973, to a cult phenomenon with fans world-wide.  The musical tells the story of a newly engaged couple who, when caught in a storm, find refuge in the home of a decidedly unusual scientist who is madly working towards unveiling his latest and greatest creation.

Rocky is also the quintessential audience participation show, and Entr’Acte will have what have come to be known as  ‘survival kits’ available for purchase for those who want them.

This is the third time Entr’Acte Theatrix will present The Rocky Horror Show.   Their 2012 and 2014 productions were so successful that when an encore presentation was suggested, it was, as Entr’Acte’s founder and producer Vicki Halmos says, “A ‘no brainer’!  Our audiences love the show,” she continues, “and so does our cast.  You can see it during rehearsals.  Their enthusiasm is boundless, and they are so excited to be able to bring all these characters to life – figuratively and literally!” she says with a smile.

“The Rocky Horror Show is just as relevant today as it was 44 years ago when it premiered,” says the production’s director, Jeremy Quinn.  “With the resurgence of hate, bigotry and violence for those who are ‘different’, it’s not only an appropriate time and place to produce the show, it’s a responsibility. RHS allows us the opportunity to give the ‘others’ a voice and platform to be seen, heard, embraced and accepted…while having A REALLY GREAT TIME AND LOADS OF SALACIOUS FUN!!!!!!!”

Cast in Entr’Acte’s Rocky are Bruno Faria as Brad Majors, Mary Grace Tesoriero as Janet Weiss, Rosseroni Parris as Frank N. Furter, Ashley Alexander as Magenta, Jamie Lynn Cleary as Columbia, Greg Halmos as Riff Raff, Tyler Palmer as Rocky, Darian Cisneros as Eddie, David W. Lamphier as The Criminologist, and Carlo-Rufino Sabusap as Dr. Scott. Also in the cast are Taryn Bagdasarian, Sarah E. Kenny, Sergio Cannata, Annaya Osborne, Cristian Howard, Lara Williams, and Jason Pierre.

Along with director Quinn, the show’s production crew includes co-Producer Greg Halmos, Musical Director Roger Blankenship, Choreographer Danny Durr, Stage Manager Nicole Stav, and Company Manager Carlo-Rufino Sabusap.

Entr’acte Theatrix as the name suggests was started to provide the next step – from classroom to career – and provide young actors a semi-professional showcase for their talents, and an all-important opportunity to build their resumes.

The Rocky Horror Show will run for 15 performances only, from October 19th – 31st, at the PGA Arts Center. The theatre is located at 4076 PGA Boulevard, in Palm Beach Gardens (33410) Tickets are on sale now, and are available on line at www.entractetheatrix.org.  There is ample parking within close proximity to the theatre.

The Rocky Horror Show is an outrageous assemblage of – and humorous tribute to – the most stereotypical science fiction and horror movies, Marvel comics, Frankie Avalon/Annette Funicello outings and rock ‘n’ roll of every vintage. PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL – Before Amy Schumer or Sarah Silverman…before Joan Rivers or Roseanne, Belle Barth was the original irreverent female comic deflating anyone who dared take sex too seriously. 

2 J Productions in association with E&M Theatricals will present Raunchy Little Musical – Belle Barth is Back! an evening with this pioneer of edgy comedy, at The PGA Arts Center, opening March 23, 2018.

Belle Barth burst onto the 1950s Miami Beach scene as the “female Lenny Bruce”. . The self-proclaimed founder of “Ball Breakers Anonymous”, this purveyor of dirty jokes who topped the charts of the Adults Only record section, had an attitude that made her off-limits for Ed Sullivan. Her records were the forbidden fruit of the Fifties—with 3 million of her “party records” serving as sex education for today’s baby boomers; her nightclub act was SRO from Miami to Chicago, New York to Vegas to LA.

Belle Barth

Born Annabelle Salzman, Belle started performing at Borscht Belt hotels and small nightclubs at age 16.  She initially billed herself as a singer-pianist who also did impersonations; but when Barth mixed her talents for music and comedy with a splash of ‘red hot mama’ spice, her career began to flourish.  She travelled throughout the United States with her nightclub act as she strove to please her mother by appearing at Carnegie Hall…which she did…almost.

Raunchy Little Musical is an evening with this pioneer of comedy, peppered with plenty of Belle Barth’s original jokes, and interspersed with poignant moments from her private life and loves, as well as high and low comedy.  With signature Belle Barth songs, plus original numbers by Grammy-nominated composer Ilya Levinson and lyrics by Owen Kalt, the script of Raunchy Little Musical was penned by Joanne Koch, author of the Off-Broadway show Sophie, Totie & Belle.
