BOCA RATON, FL: The Boca Raton Theatre Guild’s production of Tuesdays with Morrie will preview on February 27^th, open Saturday night February 28^th, and run through March 15^th at the Willow Theatre in Boca Raton’s Sugar Sand Park.

Tuesdays with Morrie is columnist Mitch Albom’s moving, inspirational, and often humorous chronicle of the conversations he had with his former professor and mentor Morrie Schwartz. Albom was a successful sports columnist for The Detroit Free Press; after catching Morrie on Nightline, Albom called him and the result was a series of fourteen Tuesdays during which he learned there is more to life than reporting on Wimbledon tournaments and following the tabloids. Throughout their conversations Schwartz, plagued with health complications, never lost his zest for teaching, learning, love, and above all, life.

Albom’s book spent 205 weeks on the New York Times Best Seller list, sold over 14 million copies, has been translated into 41 languages, and became an Emmy-award winning television movie starring Jack Lemon and Hank Azaria. In 2001 Albom collaborated with playwright Jeffrey Hatcher to adapt his work for a very successful Off Broadway production.

“I’m delighted to have to opportunity to direct this piece…” says director Genie Croft. “…To track the evolution of Mitch and Morrie’s relationship as they spend time together and rekindle a bond that turns into one final class – lessons in how to live. Their conversations explore acceptance, communication, love, openness, values, and lasting happiness. Throughout the play, as they continue to meet each Tuesday, Mitch’s character evolves as Morrie’s stories inspire him. Their conversations are supplemented with lectures and life experiences, and interspersed with flashbacks and allusions to contemporary events.”

“I had the pleasure of doing Tuesdays With Morrie five years ago at the Gulfshore Playhouse in Naples,” says actor Wayne LeGette, who is playing Mitch in the BRTG production. “I found Morrie’s compassion and courage to be almost saintly. It’s a story about an incredibly wise man that causes both Mitch and the audience to realize that there is no hurdle insurmountable if you approach it with kindness and always keep looking forward. One day, I can’t wait to play Morrie.”

Howard Elfman, who plays Morrie Schwartz is equally enthusiastic. “When I read Tuesdays with Morrie I knew right then I had to do it,” he says.

Primal Forces Productions has chosen two entertaining and thought provoking pieces for its second season. The young company’s successful production of David Mamet’s The Anarchist in March of 2014 has encouraged producer Keith Garsson to continue its mission to “explore the impact of the tumultuous 1960s on today’s generation.” Both plays will be presented at Andrews Living Arts in Ft. Lauderdale.

Dominique Morisseau’s Sunset Baby, which premiered Off-Broadway in November 2013 will begin previews on November 29^th, open on December 5^th, and run through December 21^st. John Archie will star as a former revolutionary looking to connect with his daughter (Makeba Pace) in present-day Brooklyn. “He finds that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree,” explains Garsson.

Lanford Wilson’s Redwood Curtain stunned Broadway audiences in 1992 with its unique spin on a Vietnam veteran (Ethan Henry) and the mysterious young Asian woman (Amarie Lee) who tracks him down in the forests of Northern California exasperating her guardian (Jacqueline Laggy.) Redwood Curtain will begin previews on April 4^th, 2015, open on April 10^th, and runs through April 26^th.

“The turbulent 60s provides a wealth of nostalgia and entertainment value to audiences looking for drama with a lot of meat. However, even if you weren’t there, you will be fascinated and enthralled by how different a country we were less than 50 years ago,” says Garsson.

The Boca Raton Theatre Guild was looking for something unique as a follow-up to the company’s recent successful productions of Pippin and Chicago: “Something modern – with music that would appeal to all generations,” says producer Keith Garsson. “And when Everyday Rapture opened on Broadway in 2010 to outstanding reviews and sold-out performances it just stuck in my mind. It’s funny, timely and unlike anything you’ve seen before.” Everyday Rapture will have its South Florida premiere when it previews at the Willow Theatre in Sugar Sand Park on November 7^th and opens the following night. It will run through November 23^rd.

The show, which has been called a ‘stage memoir disguised as fiction’, tells the story of a young woman’s psycho-spiritual-sexual journey down the rocky path that separates her mostly Mennonite past from her mostly Manhattan future – from the cornfields of Kansas to the clover fields of New York (with a disturbing detour through YouTube!). Everyday Rapture entwines spirituality and show biz. It follows a young woman as she grows from a Mennonite to a Manhattanite, with many psychological and spiritual challenges on the way. Gay men, Judy Garland and two preachers named Fred all form major parts of the tapestry woven into the play. Everyday Rapture features songs by numerous singers and songwriters including Johnny Mercer, David Byrne, George Harrison, Roberta Flack, Judy Garland, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, and even Mr. Rogers.

“I’m delighted to be directing the Southeast premiere of this unique musical story,” says Genie Croft. “The lead character is an outsider from Topeka – raised as a Mennonite – who follows her dreams to New York, and creates a career as a Broadway actress. The emotional, humorous, and spiritual arc of the musical is an exciting contrast of two journeys of discovery that cleverly show how divided personalities can lead to some of the most fascinating people out there.”

Musical director Caryl Fantel, who has credits from Off-Broadway to regional theatres and concert halls throughout South Florida and around the United States is equally enthusiastic about the production:
“I’m excited to work on it because there’s truly something for everyone, running the gamut of musical styles from standards to musical theatre, funk, and rock. We have a top-notch ensemble of vocalists and a rocking band in place,” she continues, “And I can’t wait to share this unique and entertaining piece of theatre.”

Says lead actress Jodie Langel: “The heart of this show lies in the story of this incredible girl, her desire to be spiritually and morally correct – while dreaming of Broadway, and to do what she loves most – be center stage singing her heart out.”

Joining Langel on the Willow stage will be Ann Marie Olson, Leah Sessa, and Ben Solmor (who is also serving as the show’s choreographer.)

Pigs Do Fly Productions will hold two readings of humorous short plays at Coral Gables’ Books & Books on January 25th and February 1st.

The award-winning company commissioned top South Florida playwrights Michael McKeever and Michael Leeds to write for them, and their plays are among those scheduled to be read.

And several months ago Pigs Do Fly Productions also put out a call to playwrights from across the United States for submissions of 10-minute contemporary comedies written to highlight “vibrant, healthy people over 50 who are doing interesting things with their lives”. Over 300 plays were submitted and a committee of 6 took on the task of reading and rating each one. The plays that will be read were rated the highest of the lot, and audiences will be asked for their input and their opinions at the end of each reading. The top five selections, along with the plays by McKeever and Leeds will form Pigs Do Fly’s next production, scheduled to take place in May at Andrews Living Arts.

I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change (February 6 to March 7, 2015, Theatre 2) In this clever two act musical, songwriters Joe DiPietro (book and lyrics) and Jimmy Roberts (music) offer a series of vignettes connected by the central theme of love and relationships. The play’s tagline is “Everything you have ever secretly thought about dating, romance, marriage, lovers, husbands, wives, and in-laws, but were afraid to admit.” I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change is the second longest running off-Broadway musical in history.

John Peterson will return to the Stage Door Theatre in George M. Cohen Tonight! (March 20 to April 26, 2015, Theatre 2) an upbeat one-man play about the beloved song and dance man George M. Cohan – capturing in 95 fast-moving minutes the essence of the man, his music, and the fabulous era of show business he came up in. A dazzling showcase for a song-and-dance man with flair. Peterson, who has received rave reviews everywhere he has performed this show, channels a swift, colorful portrayal of this most fiercely American musical figure. Only it’s not one thin mattress we’re talking about here, it’s thirteen mattresses, four feather comforters, and eight queen-size pillows! And not only that, but Jasmine wears ear muffs, a night mask, and is very, very tired! Does Jasmine pass the extremely unfair princess test? A comic jester, a rather confused king and a pompous announcer add to the merriment.

And if so, then whodunnit?

Primal Forces, the brand new off-shoot company of the Boca Raton Theatre Guild, will present the southeastern premiere of Pulitzer Prize-winner David Mamet’s The Anarchist. The production will run from February 28^th through March 23^rd at the Andrew’s Living Arts Studio in Fort Lauderdale, and will star current double Carbonell-nominee Patti Gardner and Jacqueline Laggy.

Two women and one unspeakable crime highlight this searing drama, as one character’s radical past in the turbulent 70s comes back to haunt her. With a nod to his mentor, Harold Pinter, David Mamet once again employs his signature verbal jousting in this battle of two women over freedom, power, money, religion—and the lack thereof.

to be presenting the first post-Broadway run of David Mamet’s The Anarchist. It originally opened in December 2012 right next door to a revival of his earlier classic Glengarry Glen Ross. But while that play featured an all-male cast of con men, The Anarchist, in contrast, features two women caught up in the aftermath of a horrific crime. I saw the original production in previews and immediately felt it would be a terrific piece that would work very well in a black box setting. And with Patti Gardner and Jacqueline Laggy we are very fortunate to have two of the area’s top actresses in complex roles that are both entertaining and enlightening.”

David Mamet

David Mamet is a playwright, director, author, essayist, screenwriter, and film director. His plays include Glengarry Glen Ross, for which he won the Pulitzer Prize, Speed-the-Plow, American Buffalo, A Life in the Theatre, Oleanna, The Cryptogram, and Race. Some of his films include: Redbelt, The Spanish Prisoner, House of Games (winner of Best Film and Best Screenplay at the 1987 Venice Film Festival), State and Main, The Winslow Boy, Oleanna, and most recently the 2013 HBO film Phil Spector, starring Al Pacino, Helen Mirren, and Jeffrey Tambor.

The Tony Award-winning Broadway hit comes to Boca Raton!
The Boca Raton Theatre Guild’s production of Pippin will open on January 24^th and run through February 9^th at the Willow Theatre in Boca Raton’s Sugar Sand Park.

“Although it’s set in medieval times, Pippin is actually a joyous musical satire of the changing American culture in the early 1970s,” explains the show’s director, Keith Garsson. “It’s another of Bob Fosse’s classic (yet intimate) shows that proves once again his style has never dated.”

According to musical theatre scholar Scott Miller in his 1996 book, From Assassins to West Side Story, “Pippin is a largely under-appreciated musical with a great deal more substance to it than many people realize…”

“The musical comedy highlights a young man (Mike Westrich recently of Tick, Tick… Boom!) who tries to ‘find himself’”, Garsson continues, “And reflects the baby boomers’ coming of age as they took longer to decide careers, life partners, and children. Guiding Pippin through his various peregrinations is the Leading Player (Cabonell Award-winner Reggie White – fresh from the national tour of Porgy and Bess) who opens the show with the classic number Magic To Do. Pippin features one of the most entertaining and vivacious scores in Broadway history by Stephen Schwartz (Wicked),” Garsson says. “And we’re thrilled to have Carbonell Award-winner Patti Gardner back after her terrific performance in our 2013 season’s production of Chicago, along with Leah Sessa as Katherine, Troy Stanley as King Charlemagne, Conor Walton and Randy Charleville.”

“Pippin was my very first professional show, and it almost did not happen,” says Reggie Whitehead. I attended the South Eastern Theater Conferences many years ago, and almost missed seeing the director of that particular production. He spotted me (from my 8×10!) in a hallway and said that he had been waiting to see me. He had me come to his hotel suite, where I sang for him, a capella, and read for him. Well, I got the job.

“I love playing the role of the Leading Player,” Whitehead continues, “Because I always find something new in the character and the show. This is my third time doing this role, and now that I am a little older, with a different outlook on life in general, I suppose some of that life experience will help me shape this incarnation, at this stage of my life.”

Patti Gardner and Mike Westrich are equally excited to be a part of the Boca Raton Theatre Guild’s first 2014 production:

“I’m playing two roles: Fastrada and Berthe,” says Gardner. “Berthe is the role I’ve ALWAYS wanted to play ever since I saw the original production of Pippin in New York. Both women are diametrically opposed in every way…so it’ll be great fun to do that.”

The Popular Hit Musical Returns to South Florida for a Limited Run

From Lily Langtree to Cyndi Lauper and Betty Boop to Tina Turner, or from Rosie the Riveter to Britney Spears, female singers and pop stars and their music provide a vivid reflection of how much has changed for women since the beginning of the 20^th century. RESPECT: A Musical Journey of Women, which has evolved from a one-woman dissertation to an international hit musical revue since its debut, is an entertaining, exuberant, and exhilarating look at the lives of women as reflected in the popular music of the times. RESPECT: A Musical Journey of Women will run from December 5^th through January 5^th at the Mizner Park Cultural Arts Center’s Studio Theatre in Boca Raton.

This production, which is part of the BRTG’s newly extended season, is a return of the very first, wildly popular Florida incarnation of RESPECT and will be directed by the show’s original director, Peter J. Loewy. Featuring an ensemble cast of four and a live band, and combining excerpts of 60 songs including “Someone to Watch Over Me,” “I Will Survive,” “I Will Follow Him,” “These Boots are Made for Walking,” “What’s Love Got to Do with it,” and “Hero” with women’s own stories about finding dreams, lost love, relationship issues, entering the workforce, gaining independence, and more, RESPECT has resonated with audiences around the world. Men as well as women will have no trouble at all identifying with the messages of encouragement and empowerment that RESPECT portrays.

Loewy, who recently produced a successful revival of RESPECT in his own theatre in Metuchen, New Jersey, is excited to bring the show back to its ‘state of origin’. “It’s a great show,” he explains. “Everyone who sees it loves it. It’s ‘up’, it’s fun, and yet it has a story to tell. And I get as many positive comments about it from men, as I do from women!”

RESPECT definitely has a universal appeal. “What’s interesting – and exciting – to me about RESPECT is that it’s attractive to all audiences,” Loewy says. “We get mothers with their daughters, and grandmothers with their granddaughters, not to mention their male counterparts! When we played at the Cuillo Centre for the Arts and at the 26^th Street Theatre in Wilton Manors, we would chat with people before and after the show. Some of them had seen it 5 or more times!”

Along with Sharyn Peoples, who recently received rave reviews in Slow Burn Theatre Company’s production of Next to Normal, Carla Bordonada, Nicole Kinzel, and Ziarra Washington will make up the cast of RESPECT: A Musical Journey of Women; the show’s original musical director, Phil Hinton is also on board.

There will be two special New Year’s Eve ‘champagne performances’ of RESPECT (at 4 pm and 9 pm) on December 31st.

South Florida theatre is thriving. At last count, the Theatre League of South Florida reported a membership of 58 theatres, with several new production companies waiting in the wings to join.

The 2013-2014 South Florida theatre season promises to be more exciting than ever. Theatre companies have chosen a wide variety of plays – traditional and non – to populate their many stages, and audiences will have the opportunity to sample everything from Broadway classics and award-winning dramas to rock operas, madcap comedies, and children’s theatre.

Although many are familiar with the larger venues in the area – The Broward Center for the Performing Arts, The Kravis Center for the Performing Arts, and Miami’s Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, there are a number of excellent smaller, interesting, and reasonably priced local theatres definitely worth visiting.

Boca Raton hosts several well respected theatre companies. The award-winning Women’s Theatre Project and the Boca Raton Theatre Guild both operate out of the Willow Theatre at Sugar Sand Park. This state of the art theatre seats 155 patrons. There is ample parking available, and the surrounding park is a delightful setting for a pre-theatre picnic. This year, the two companies have joined forces to offer patrons the opportunity to purchase subscriptions to their productions. For a total of $99, patrons can attend four plays – two musicals produced by the Boca Raton Theatre Guild, and two plays presented by the Women’s Theatre Project.

The Boca Raton Theatre Guild will also team with Peter J. Loewy this season, and together they will co-produce Respect: A Musical Journey of Women at the Mizner Park Cultural Arts Center. Respect originated in South Florida, and Loewy was not only its first director, but one of the prime developers of the ever-popular show.

Parade Productions is one of Boca Raton’s newer companies. Their mission, “to produce high quality theatre experiences that entertain, enlighten inform, uplift and inspire”, is reflected in their choice of plays. This season’s production, The Last Schwartz has been praised as being ‘rollicking, sad, shocking, goofy, and thoughtful…’ Their home, at the Mizner Park Cultural Arts Center’s Studio Theatre, is easily accessible, and free, metered, or valet parking is available.

Sol Children Theatre offers theatre for the entire family. Now entering their 11^th year, this company of young performers, under the direction and guidance of Rosalie Grant, produces a number of quality productions each year. Located on Federal Highway just south of Spanish River Boulevard, Sol is a small black box theatre. It seats 77, including child sized front row seating for their younger audiences. This year they are debuting a new production company, Evening Star Productions, which will focus on plays for more for mature audiences, and feature adult, professional actors, as well as young people working towards a career in theatre.

For those who would venture north to Delray Beach, Entr’Acte Theatrix will follow up this past summer’s highly successful production of Monty Python’s Spamalot with The Who’s Tommy at the Delray Beach Center for the Arts at Old School Square.

Steve Solomon will bring his comedic recollections back to the The Lyric Theatre, The Kravis Center for the Performing Arts, and the Coral Springs Center for the Arts …And the Broward Stage Door Theatre in Coral Springs has a dozen productions planned between September 2013 and July 2014.

Below is a list, in chronological opening night order, of just some of the theatres, theatre companies, plays (and one musical group), that will be on stage this season, along with brief descriptions of each production. The Broward Stage Door Theatre will present 12 plays and musicals between August 30, 2013 and July 6, 2014. Included in their schedule are 9-5: The Musical, Stephen Sondheim’s Company, Sophisticated Ladies, featuring the music of Duke Ellington, Twilight of the Golds, Crimes of the Heart, and The Last Night of Ballyhoo.

A photo shoot in the summer of 1962. As screen icon Marilyn Monroe poses for her photographer she finds herself wondering what it might be like if she had it to do all over again. In Marilyn: Forever Blonde, the legendary actress reveals much of what we know – but even more about what we don’t know – of the roller coaster ride she took from the orphanage to the silver screen. It is a fascinating and provocative journey.

The Boca Raton Theatre Guild will present Marilyn: Forever Blonde at the Township Center for the Performing Arts in Coconut Creek from November 21^st – December 1^st, and at the Mizner Park Cultural Arts Center’s Studio Theatre from January 9^th – 11^th. The production is part of the BRTG’s recently announced extended season.

Marilyn: Forever Blonde, stars acclaimed actress Sunny Thompson, and has won a dozen major awards including “Best Special Theatrical Event of the Year,” “Best Leading Actress in a Play,” “One of the Year’s Top Ten Productions” and “Best Touring Production”. It has played throughout the United States, as well as in Canada, England and New Zealand. Critics have consistently and unanimously praised Thompson’s compelling and nuanced performance as Marilyn.

Playwright Greg Thompson painstakingly researched all aspects of Monroe’s life – all the words spoken in the play have been documented as being Marilyn’s own. Marilyn: Forever Blonde features 17 songs by some of the greatest songwriters in show business; Irving Berlin, Harold Arlen, and Johnny Mercer are all represented, and Monroe performed each of the musical numbers featured in the production in her films. The music is has been carefully selected to help tell Marilyn’s story – a life of dreams and make-believe that catapulted her to the stars and ultimately found her crashing down to Earth – remaining in our memories forever.

Marilyn: Forever Blonde is directed by Stephanie Shine, Artistic Director of the Memphis Shakespeare Company. The play was written by Greg Thompson, who has produced dozens of award-winning shows throughout the world.

The play languished on the shelf for more than a dozen years before Thompson found the right actress to play the part. “I found Marilyn Monroe impersonators who couldn’t act, and many wonderful actresses who just didn’t seem to give off the sexual playfulness of Monroe,” says Thompson. “I didn’t even think of Sunny as Marilyn until she put on a Marilyn styled wig to do a parody in her stage show.”

But Thompson turned the offer down, explaining that no woman should ever have to be compared with Marilyn Monroe. However after two years of ‘nagging’ Thompson finally got his way. “It took nearly 15 years to make it happen,” he says. “If I’d had to wait another 15 years I’m afraid I might have forgotten what it was about Marilyn Monroe that turned me on in the first place!”

Neil Simon, Marvin Hamlisch and Carole Bayer Sager’s collaboration is a delightful tale of love, comedy, and music

It is said that opposites attract. Pair a somewhat up-tight classically trained musician with a young lyricist who’s a little bit more than ‘out there’, and sparks just might fly. Add a script by comedy master Neil Simon to the mix, stir in music by Marvin Hamlisch and lyrics by Carole Bayer-Sager and musical theatre magic is bound to occur.

Carbonell Award winners Margot Moreland and Oscar Cheda will star in the Boca Raton Theatre Guild’s production of They’re Playing Our Song at the Willow Theatre in Sugar Sand Park. The show will run from November 8^th through November 24^th. The two will portray Vernon Gersch and Sonia Walsk, the fictional counterparts to Hamlisch and Bayer-Sager whose real-life romance served as the inspiration for the musical.

“They’re Playing Our Song was an enormous hit when it played on Broadway,” says BRTG Artistic Director Keith Garsson. “It ran almost three years. The script and score still resonate with great music and very funny dialogue. And the theme of the show – that can two people can maintain both a personal and professional relationship with some sacrifice and compromise – offers an extremely entertaining two hours.

“They’re Playing Our Song was one of the last personal musicals,” Garsson explains. It was the era of shows like Dreamgirls and Falsettoland. Soon afterwards, Broadway gave way to another “British invasion” with productions like Phantom of the Opera and Les Miz. Since then, spectacles have become the new normal.”

“We have a terrific team in place for this show,” Garsson (who will also direct the show) continues. “Caryl Fantel is our musical director, and Ron Hutchins will choreograph both Song and our upcoming production of Pippin. They’re Playing Our Song is a terrific fit for us in that it hasn’t been done often. And it continues the BRTG’s tradition of producing musicals from the sixties and seventies – a time a lot of us remember fondly.”

They’re Playing Our Song will run from November 8^th through November 24^th at the Willow Theatre in Sugar Sand Park. The theatre is located at 300 South Military Trail in Boca Raton, just south of Palmetto Park Road. Performances are Wednesday through Saturday at 8 pm, and Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays at 2 pm.
